THE GLASS SALONS AT 101 PARK ST

BLOOMS AND BRAIDS Although The Great Gatsby is still making waves in the wedding world (which means you can expect to see more excellent flapper-inspired hairpieces this year, especially browbands), floral headwear is going to be massive – we do love a floral crown! Make like Made in Chelsea star Millie Mackintosh, who looked so pretty when she got married last year sporting a flower garland in her halo plait, another big look this year. “Braids are in for 2014,” confirms Donna Brogan of The Glass Salons at 101 PARK ST. “They’re really versatile and can be used to convey a range of styles, from bohemian and romantic to elegant or glamorous.”

Move over, macarons and step aside, cupcakes - there’s a new sugary treat in town. The wedding doughnut cake is here and, quite frankly, I can’t think of a better accompaniment to a post-meal espresso. “Our doughnut cakes are enormously popular as they make a magnificent display on our Perspex cake stands, which can be adapted for any number of guests,” says Mandi of Rainbow Sugarcraft. “They can be finished in any colour scheme to match the wedding theme. Everyone loves doughnuts and they smell wonderful!”

T R O P E R D N E TR STREET FOOD Street food - in other words, ready-to-eat food sold at markets, stalls and mobile vans - hit Scotland in a big way last year, with collectives like Street Food Cartel hosting regular pop-up dining events in Glasgow. And as more and more couples opt for informal weddings in unusual venues such as tipis and rustic barns, it makes sense to serve up a wedding meal that fits with this relaxed vibe. “Couples are keen to have personalised weddings in more off-piste locations and street vendors can really help with that,” agrees Stewart Pleace of Street Food Scotland. “And as we’re small businesses, we can personalise the menu to the occasion; for example, we have Indian, Caribbean, Japanese, Morrocan and lots more besides.” You could even have an ice cream cart on hand to dish out sugar cones and tubs of the sweet stuff - we love The Green Tricycle (thegreentricycle.co.uk).

OH SO BLUE Pantone announced its colour of Spring 2014 as Dazzling Blue, a jazzy shade of cobalt that’d look fab incorporated into a simple colour palette with two of the other hit hues this season, dove grey and blush. Why not add a pop of colour to your outfit with blue shoes or nails – that’s your something blue sorted!

OMBRE, OMBRE! We all know at least one person with ombre hair (fact), and the dip-dye trend has now found its way into the wedding world. But it’s not just confined to tresses; we’ve seen everything from cakes featuring tiers in graduating shades of pink to bouquets arranged to mimic the colours of a fading sunset. Even wedding dresses are getting in on the ombre action - how pretty is this Monique Lhuillier sherbet ombre gown, from her 2014 collection?

Colour There wasn’t a single collection that didn’t include colour. Brights and pastels made an appearance, but it’s the barely-there shades that count, from the softest hues of blush to the lightest latte and the most subtle hint of champagne. Ash grey and a whisper of blue could be found on almost every catwalk, taking the focus away from the more traditional ivory and white and, often, colour was used as an underlay beneath cream lace or a topping of tulle. Meanwhile top bridal designers, Vera Wang and Enzoani, brought bold colour to the fore with strong Hitpinks, the corals shops:and vivid9-12 reds.months before

There is simply no getting away from it: lace is still big news. Its popularity continues to blossom, but it’s the new generation of lace that’s causing something of a sensation. New treatments have made lace modern: think metallic coatings (gleaming silver, muted gold or pewter); lace encrusted with motifs of diamante and pearl; lace as underskirt, topped with layers of tulle or lace – and this is the big one – as a tiny shrug or cropped top, changing the look of a strapless dress (two dresses for the price of one here!). Look out for detachable lace straps, removable lace sleeves, and lace jackets that form keyhole cut-outs.

Californian designer Claire Pettibone is the mistress of illusion, famed for her intricate lacework and delicate embroideries, which dress the skin like fine art. And she’s not the only one with a passion for illusion; it was evident in collections across all price ranges, where sheer panels became sleeves or fill-in necklines. These sheer fabrics often cover the back but leave a row of tiny buttons or a spray of crystal beadwork visible, giving the impression of floating details.

Laura kept things simple with a city chic bun. She used Wella Professional Oil Reflections Smoothing Oil (£12.95) to smooth the hair and add shine. Putting hair into a high ponytail, she then backcombed it to create volume before tucking the hair under to create a large bun. Wella Performance Strong Hairspray (£10.35) set the style, and a mist of Wella Professionals Shimmer Delight Finish Spray (£7.60) added gloss.

Flowers We tried to keep the flowers in bold, contrasting colours to enhance the modern style of dresses in this shoot. Varying the colour added texture and interest, while the shape of the bouquets kept them fresh and contemporary.

For this look, Jennifer started with very simple and fresh make-up. She dusted the eyes with MAC Eye Shadow in Era (£12.50), applied black Illamasqua Precision Gel Liner (£18), and finished with lots of individual Eyelure eyelashes to give a doll-eyed effect. She then used Bobbi Brown Pot Rouge in Rose 10 (£19) on the cheeks and lips for a rosy glow. Illamasqua Lipstick in Growl (£16.50) gave the look a vampy edge.

Hair

For a vintage look with a modern twist, Kirsty created a curled, glamorous style with an ‘undone’ finish. Using Bumble and Bumble Classic Hairspray (£20.50), Kirsty prepped Sophie’s hair before applying heated Diva Professional Styling Stay Hot Rollers (£36), for added bounce. Using mirrored straighteners, she curled the hair in varying directions to create fullness before teasing the hair and misting with hairspray. Sophie’s hair was then backcombed at the crown and dusted with Osis Mattifying Powder (£9.99) to add texture and lift the root.

Make-up

Leigh started by using a Smashbox primer (from £17) before applying YSL Teint Resist Foundation in Shade 06 (£31) and MAC Face and Body Foundation in Shade 02 (£27) for an even skintone. Chanel Bronze Universel Bronzing Makeup Base (£31) added warmth to Sophie’s skin, while MAC Powder Blush in Frankly Scarlet (£18) providing a rosy glow. A sultry eye was created with Benefit Big Beautiful Eyes (£24.50), MAC Fluidline in Blacktrack (£15) and lashings of Max Factor Masterpiece Waterproof Mascara (£9.99). Urban Decay All Nighter Makeup Setting Spray (£19.50) set the look. Make-Up: Makeup by Leigh Blaney makeup-by-leighblaney.co.uk
