T
he city of Vienna is about to cross the 2 Million inhabitants mark, in this respect the Rathaus is looking for strategies to provide sufficient housing for future inhabitants, without expanding the city limits. This environment forms the frame of the studio and defines the basis for explorations of design techniques that borrow from biological colonies, and their ability to adapt to ecological, and spatial niches. The speculative reality of the project relies on qualities such as repetition and difference, density and objects as well as the sensibilities and ontologies of highly articulated populations. The critical frame within this context is defined by architectural lineages present on the Stephansplatz, where the project is set, and their obsessions for continuous lines present in the Gothic St. Stephan and the Baroque Bishop Palace.

As stated in the brief above, the work is to leverage the studio's capabilities to create articulated and repetitious geometrical structures in order to accommodate for the conditions of a highly populated and growing Vienna. The building seeks to
solve the dilemma by actively wearing these conditions on its own skin. The densly populated internal and external facades synchonously solve and expresses Vienna's issue of overpopulation head on. Externally the dense and active facade becomes an advocate of raising awarness for the future of Vienna. Internally its articulate geometry produces increased privacy and unique experiences among its users. Vienna Colonies takes off with an exercise in component generation using a topological mesh modeler. A catalog of components, modules were produced and tested. Each module could be replicated and combined in some manor to produce a structural logic. Upon considering numerous programattic requirments and site conditions a single component was elected to move forward with. The work was then executed using the polygonal modeling software, auto-desk Maya. This module was put through a series of drop tests using Maya's built in physics engine. The resulting build up of the dropped component was both pragmatic and simultaneously ornamental, thus Pragmatic Ornament was born.

CONSIDERING THE CONTEXT OF THE STEPHENPLATZ, VIENNA, OUR RESIDENTIAL HIGHRISE SEEKS TO RESTORE BALANCE TO THE SQUARE. ACHIEVED SYNCHRONOUSLY BY RESPECTING CITY HEIGHT RESTRICTIONS AS WELL AS BRINGING A COMPLEXITY TO ITS FACADE CONTENDING WITH THAT OF THE CATHEDRAL'S.
