Preventing chloasma If the skin is exposed to the sun during pregnancy hyperpigmentation may appear on the face. This hyper-pigmentation shows up in the form of brown spots, particularly on the forehead, cheeks and temples. This is known as chloasma or the mask of pregnancy. To prevent it from appearing, avoid exposure to the sun and apply a high SPF index sun protection product during sunny weather.
Preventing stretch marks Stretch marks are little tears located under the skin following extreme stretching of the skin during pregnancy, and they can become established on the stomach, breasts, thighs and buttocks. At first they look like purple-coloured stripes which, within a few months, will become white. Stretch marks are scarring of the skin which once formed do not disappear. To limit their appearance it is vital to use targeted skin care treatments together with massage. For an optimum result apply a stretch mark cream every day, once or twice a day, if possible from the beginning of your pregnancy. Good to know: we are all likely to develop stretch marks. However we are not all equal with regard to this risk as the nature of our skin (from slightly to very elastic) plays a part in their appearance. For example, if you got stretch marks as a teenager or during a previous pregnancy you are more at risk of being confronted with this inconvenience during your pregnancy.

Baby’s wash routine is essential for maintaining good hygiene throughout the course of the day. It preserves baby’s natural skin balance. For gentle cleaning without irritation you should use products that are specially designed to respect the extreme vulnerability of your baby’s skin.

Face
They are the first part of the body to transfer dirt and germs. Ideally, wash baby’s hands before every meal and, if possible, when baby gets home from the day-nursery or nanny and before he/she goes to bed. Use a mild soap or a wipe to clean baby’s hands.
This should be given special attention because it is very sensitive to impurities. Clean it as many times as is necessary throughout the day. Use cotton wool soaked in a choice of cleansing milk or cleansing water. Do not forget to wash behind the ears. If baby has dry skin, do not hesitate to apply a moisturiser.

A privileged moment of pleasure and togetherness To make baby’s bath time calm and enjoyable, apply some words of advice on a daily basis... and bath time will soon become baby’s favourite ritual and mum and dad’s too!

Organisation, precautions and safety are the key words! Whether the bath is in the morning or the evening does not really matter, the main thing is for you to be completely available. However, it is worth noting that it is preferable to give it before feeding time so as not to interfere with digestion. But be careful, a baby must never be left alone in the water or on the changing table. To avoid stress take the telephone off the hook as well. Prepare the bath well in advance: put all the products, towel and change of nappy close at hand. Ensure the room is the right temperature, between 21 and 23°C, so that baby does not catch cold when coming out of the bath. Run the bath water between 35 and 37°C, measuring the temperature with a thermometer.

Limit the bath to 2 or 3 minutes to avoid skin dryness.
Install baby comfortably and safely: pass your arm under the back of your baby’s neck and shoulders and hold firmly by the arms at armpit level. By holding baby, mother or father’s arm reassures him/her and acts as a comfortable headrest. Wash baby with your hands and avoid using a wash mitt or sponge which are riddled with germs. Dry baby thoroughly, gently dabbing him, without rubbing and do not forget between the toes and all the skin folds of his body which are sensitive to irritation.
The bath enables physical contact with baby. Your baby is thus very attentive to the words and games of his/her parents. It’s a great moment for bonding which sets the pace for the day.

An atopy-prone skin is characterised by constant skin dryness, red patches and itching. It results from a lipid deficiency of the epidermal barrier. Essential hygiene Baby’s skin is subjected to quite an ordeal during the first few months of life. Baby has up to 3 bowel movements a day and urinates more than 20 times a day, not forgetting the problem of the nappies which, in prolonged contact with the skin, encourage maceration, irritation and the appearance of nappy rash.

Babies’ notion of cleanliness is very different from that of an adult: babies do not cry when they have soiled their nappy but rather when it stings. In other words, some babies never cry when they need changing. The number of nappy changes corresponds to the number of meals. During the first weeks of life it should be changed at least 8 times per 24 hours and thereafter it can be a little more spaced out according to your baby’s habits. As a general rule you should change baby before or after every feed and more frequently if he cries because he/she is wet.

Be sure to dry baby’s bottom very thoroughly by gently dabbing it, so as to avoid any maceration. If baby is sore, dry the skin with a hairdryer (set on cold!). Do not forget that your baby’s nappies need to be a suitable size: neither too small, nor too tight and attached in a loose enough way to allow air to freely circulate. If baby’s bottom is irritated: leave it in the open air for a few minutes and dry with eosin or apply a thick layer of diaper rash cream.
Always clean baby’s bottom meticulously moving from the front towards the back to avoid transporting germs to the genital area.
The skin of the nappy area is a real barometer of baby’s well-being. It can be a sign of an unsuitable hygiene routine (nappies not changed often enough, use of unsuitable personal hygiene products, etc) or a sign of a minor stomach upset, teething or a warning sign of the first illnesses.

Disinfect it every day with an antiseptic solution and then protect it with a sterile compress stuck in place with Micropore tape. During nappy changing, gently dry it to get rid of any moisture (the umbilical cord has no nerve endings so you cannot hurt your baby).
For the 1 st month there is no point in cutting your baby’s nails if he/she does not scratch himself/herself. During the following months choose a time when baby is calm and use scissors with rounded ends (especially for babies). Avoid cutting them too short or leaving pointed angles on the sides of nails which could injure your baby. You can also use an emery board to get them the right length.

We recommend you clean baby’s eyes daily. Soak a compress or cotton wool pad in physiological saline solution, then clean his eyelids starting from the inside corners towards the outside corners of your baby’s eyes. Change the compress to clean the other eye.
Ears They should be cleaned once or twice a week, preferably with a thin wick of dry rolled cotton wool (do not use a cotton bud as it could injure him/her and create plugs of earwax). Be careful not to push the wick in too far.
Nose Clean baby’s nose 3 to 4 times a week with 2 wicks made from cotton wool pads/compresses soaked in physiological saline solution without pushing them in too far. In the event of a blocked nose, we recommend you clear the nasal passages every day, 2 to 3 times a day. To do so, lay your baby on his back. Turn baby’s head to the right. Inject a dose of physiological saline solution into the left nostril using a single-use dose or a spray. The solution should come out of the other nostril. Repeat the same procedure for the right nostril. Another possibility: extract the secretions with a baby nasal aspirator. 27

A massage has many virtues, both emotional and physical. On the one hand it plays a vital role in the parent-child relationship by helping them to mutually get to know each other and strengthening communication via touch. On the other hand it stimulates awareness and calm and soothes babies little problems (respiratory, digestive...). Carried out before a nap or bedtime it can help baby to fall asleep.
Before massaging baby: ● Be careful to ensure that your baby’s skin is completely dry. ● Use a calm and warm room (around 25°C).
