No One Offers You More Because No One Has More to Offer! The objective of a bull test is to measure the differences of a group of bulls; to observe and document average daily gain, genetic expression, phenotypic strengths, etc. Two of the primary purposes of Midland Bull Test is to focus on soundness and fertility. The fall out for fertility is relatively low in our test partially due to the ration fed. The high level of roughage coupled with the low level of grain promotes ultimate soundness in the feet and legs and also aids in attaining the highest levels of fertility. Our bulls walk through the sale in fit using condition ready to go to work. The importance of bulls being capable of maintaining their condition and working when turned out is critical to your success and ours. Every effort is made to offer functional bulls that transition into the life of a successful and fit asset to your operation.
Sale Order – Determined by Midland Bull Test Index (1/4 ADG + 1/4 WDA + 1/4 NR + 1/4 ER efficiency ratio) and Estimated Sale Value. We do expect small changes in sale order. They will be posted online with current version on the bottom. Sale orders will be posted online prior to sale and available sale day. Sale day orders trump. Terms & Conditions– All sales are being conducted under the American Angus Association Suggested Sale Terms and Conditions (6/7/12) regardless of breed of sale bull. Midland Bull Test guarantees all bulls as breeders for the first breeding season immediately following the sale. Breeding season is defined as the first 60-day period following first turnout of bulls. If a problem occurs please contact Midland Bull Test IMMEDIATELY. We will provide you with all necessary information to contact the consignor. Midland Bull Test wants to ensure that all of our customers are repeat customers; therefore, we are always available to help facilitate arrangements between parties as needed. All claims for adjustment or refund must be made within three months of sale date. This is not a life insurance policy; Mortality Insurance will be available for purchase at the sale. We would suggest that quality care is maintained on all bulls and yearling bulls not be allowed to get too thin. We will provide ongoing customer service and focus on buyer satisfaction. This credit or replacement guarantee pertains strictly to reproductive use of the bull, not the physical loss of the bull. Terms Are Cash – When making settlement, please leave specific instructions for transfer and shipping. Each animal will be sold to the highest bidder with the auctioneer settling any dispute as to bids. Announcements made from the auction block take precedence over any printed material. Livestock will be cared for following the sale at the buyer’s risk and responsibility. Certificate of Registry – A transferred certificate of registry will be furnished to the Buyer for each animal after settlement has been made. -2-
Health – All cattle will be sold according to the health regulations of the State of Montana. Buyers must be aware of any variations between the laws of the states. All bulls have tested BVD-PI negative and are tested negative for known genetic defects as detected by pedigree per respective Associations. Bulls heading to states requiring Trich test will be tested immediately post sale. Canadian Buyers – Estimated health inspection costs for first bull purchase is $300. Each additional bull is $125 per bull. Midland will split this cost equally with buyer for health inspection and testing. Fertility Tested & Guaranteed – Complete semen and scrotal evaluations on all bulls are performed by Bryan Roe, DVM, Shepherd, MT. Scrotal measurements for group 1 (*) were taken mid-February. Group 2 (**) were taken March 4 & 5. All are published as actual size. For projected sale date size, add 1 to 1.5 cm per month. These bulls sell guaranteed to be breeders via natural service. Efficiency Test – Bulls are denoted as *(group 1) or **(group 2). RFI is given in this catalog. Complete efficiency test results are available at www.MidlandBullTest.com. See explanation on page 8. 1/3 Revenue Sharing Semen Interest – Some breeders have elected to retain semen interest in their bulls. The buyer will have full possession and full salvage value. The seller, if he/she desires to collect semen, will do so in the offbreeding season at the seller’s expense and the buyer’s convenience. If the buyer opts to participate in semen sales, then buyer and seller will work out a mutual agreement. Over the years it has been Midland’s experience that most sellers do not exercise this option on bulls going into commercial herds. Delivery – Cattle purchased in our sale will be delivered to CENTRAL locations, such as stockyards, in the lower 48 states up to 400 miles without cost to the buyer. We will be in touch prior to delivering the cattle, usually the day before. Everyone attending the sale does so at their own risk. The owners and Midland assume no liability, legal or otherwise, for any accidents which may occur.

Balancing Bull Selection with Feed Intake Dr. Denny Crews, Colorado State University, and Dr. Gordon Carstens, Texas A&M University
Now that the beef industry has increased access to individual feed intake records from test station sources, we move to the task of how to optimally incorporate this new information into genetic evaluation and improvement programs. It is important to realize that even though various measures of efficiency have been proposed and studied, the core piece of new information is individual feed intake. We now recognize that actual feed intake measurement is essential to genetic improvement. The feed we purchase to finish cattle, along with forages and supplemental feeds for stockers and cows represent the LARGEST variable COST of producing beef, and is clearly a cost-side economically relevant trait. A central question is, “How is the best way to use this information to make selection decisions?” Of the several traits that have been more intensively discussed recently, we have to keep in mind that no one EPD tool will be optimal. Foremost, genetic improvement based on single-trait selection is not sustainable, nor advisable. The real question is how we balance the EPD tools we have available to make better decisions, recognizing their relative economic importance across multiple production and marketing systems In developing profitable selection programs, we must consider potential genetic antagonisms that contribute to making progress in one trait, but at the same time, losing ground in another important trait. With feed intake, we make decisions that recognize its importance, but at the same time, recognizing that cattle that eat the least and cost the least to feed, may not always be the most profitable. The most widely discussed feed efficiency trait that combines feed intake with other traits is residual feed intake (RFI), which adjusts intake for differences in body weight (BW) and level of production. RFI is the difference between a bull’s actual intake and its expected intake based on Body Weight and ADG. Those bulls that eat less than expected will have a negative RFI and be more efficient compared to those with a positive RFI. The figure shows the relationship between RFI and daily gain for 151 bulls. Common sense tells us that we would not want to select for a single trait alone like RFI because many of the bulls with negative RFI (efficient) were also below average for ADG (lower-left quadrant of figure). Conversely, many of the bulls that were trait leaders for ADG were below average for RFI (upper-right quadrant). Thus, a balanced approach to selection is warranted, which can be illustrated by the use of a feedlot profit index (FPI) that we developed in 2006. The FPI is a 3-trait index using ADG, RFI and yearling Body Weight with economic weightings based on net revenue for progeny being marketed in feedlots. The high-index bulls (> 105) were those that excelled both in ADG and RFI. A growth trait that can be forced to be independent of intake is often referred to as residual gain (RDG). RFI and RDG are intake and growth rate traits, respectively, and these examples emphasize the point against single trait selection. 3 Residual feed intake (where lower or more negative numbers are considered desirable), measures the amount of feed a bull eats above or below what we’d expect given his growth rate and body size. 3 Residual gain, on the other hand, measures the difference between growth rate (average daily gain on test) of a bull and what we would expect the bull to gain given how much he eats and his size, and more positive or higher RDG values may be more desirable. 3 In developing more comprehensive terminal and maternal indexes, the objective is to identify those bulls that are more profitable in their production system, mainly that are high producers, but also that require less input costs. -8-
We can and should continue building selection indexes that incorporate a balance of EPDs that account for a wider range of traits that impact both the costs and revenues of producing beef. These are restricted examples of selection indexes, just like total maternal EPD and breed-wide indexes that focus on certain marketing systems. Always remember, bulls will rank differently regardless of which index is used. Genetically speaking, we would use both the relative economic importance and the associations among several traits, including intake, to provide a tool that is relevant to the efficiency of the total system beyond those measured on tested bulls. Retained ownership systems, for example, easily illustrate the importance of efficiency as a tool to increase profitability. But what about the replacement sisters of those feedlot calves? Will they breed as heifers and go on to have long productive herd life? And, how big of a cow type will they become? Another example would be a weaned calf market system where heifers are retained. Do we just want bulls in this system that eat less and grow fast on test? How will their retained daughters perform as cows on range? Research shows we can answer all of these questions, and we start by recognizing the importance of feed intake. Not just for bulls, but also cows, steers, and replacement and cull heifers. The residual measures of intake and growth that we have known about since the 1960’s are useful steps toward more balanced bull selection now that this industry is getting serious about measuring feed intake. We certainly applaud efforts like those of Midland Bull Test to use feed intake as a core measurement that can be used to improve profitability and sustainability in the beef industry.
We agree that high weaning calves make you money, but if you can get high weaning calves that gain on less, how much money is being left on the table?
On behalf of all our seedstock producers, we thank you for coming to the sale! -9-
DNA - Decoded! Most of us have read how DNA has changed the game in Livestock Evaluation. Most of us have tried to read the scientific explanations on how it works. Simply put, cattle that excelled in specific traits were tested, and DNA identified the genes (or markers) that superior animals had in common. For example, let’s look at Weaning Weight (WW). Many thousands of animals with actual weaning weights recorded were evaluated with DNA. Some with very high weaning weights had the same gene markers in common, while some with poor weaning weights possessed an altogether different set of gene markers. We can now DNA test to investigate whether an animal outside the discovery group possess these favorable markers proven for superior weaning weight. The DNA possessed by a sire is directly correlated to his ability to transmit desirable traits to his offspring. EPDs are good, DNA makes them better. EPDs work. They are the best information in the industry, but are inherently dynamic with something called “possible change”, which says that EPDs can change significantly once progeny arrive. No fault of the system, because a pedigree prediction cannot describe which genes an animal actually got from its parents, as there are billions of possible combinations. The American Angus Association owns the most complete database in the industry, comprising millions of animal records. When DNA for these favorable (or unfavorable) markers is applied to the calculation of EPDs for each trait, they become much more accurate. In fact, Pfizer (now Zoetis) HD 50K can make EPDs up to 6 times more accurate and predictable than a pedigree prediction alone. Another way to look at it is with Progeny Equivalents. They describe how many progeny a bull would have to sire in order for his EPDs to reflect a comparable amount of accuracy: Progeny Equivalents are used to describe the amount of effect that DNA analysis has on EPD accuracy. To achieve a comparable amount of EPD predictability and accuracy, an Angus animal would have to have following number of actual progeny (calves) performance information recorded and submitted. In the example of a Cow, Zoetis HD50K provides more predictive information than she will ever realize from progeny in her lifetime. Calving Ease Direct – CED EPD with 50K has the same information as if there were 21 progeny with Calving Ease scores recorded. Birth – BW EPD with 50K has the same accuracy as 11 progeny birth weights turned in on your bull. Weaning – WW EPD with 50K has the same accuracy as 19 progeny weaning weights on your bull. Yearling – YW EPD with 50K has the same accuracy as 22 progeny yearling weights on your bull. Milk – M EPD with 50K has the same accuracy as having 15 daughters in production out of your bull. Docility – DOC EPD with 50K has the same accuracy as 10 progeny information from your bull. Rib Eye – RE EPD with 50K has the same accuracy as 9 progeny carcasses measured for Rib Eye. Marbling – MB EPD with 50K has the same accuracy as having 16 progeny carcasses graded. Ultrasound – Carcass EPDs with 50K have the same accuracy as over 30 progeny with Ultrasound scan records. The Zoetis 50K DNA test analyzes over 50,000 different markers spread across the entire bovine genome for the most comprehensive analysis and highest accuracy in the industry. Today we can reliably put bulls together for uniformity as well or better with Genomic-Enhanced (GE) EPDs than we can with half-brothers or even full brothers with non GE EPDs. Service is synonymous with Midland and we have invested heavily in Zoetis HD 50K DNA technology to bring you the most predictable and profitable bulls you can buy. There is no additional cost to you. For more information on Zoetis HD 50K DNA and Genomic-Enhanced EPDs visit Angus.org, Zoetis Animal Genetics, or GenomeXchange.com

EPDs (Expected Progeny Difference) EPDs - The prediction of how future progeny of each animal are expected to perform relative to the progeny of other animals listed in the database. You cannot compare EPDs across breeds. Each breed association calculates that breed’s EPDs. See averages below. BW - Birth Weight EPD, expressed in pounds, is a predictor of a sire’s ability to transmit birth weight to his progeny compared to that of other sires. WW - Weaning Weight EPD, expressed in pounds, is a predictor of a sire’s ability to transmit weaning growth to his progeny compared to that of other sires. Milk - Maternal Milk EPD is a predictor of a sire’s genetic merit for milk and mothering ability as expressed in his daughters compared to daughters of other sires. In other words, it is that part of a calf’s weaning weight attributed to milk and mothering ability. Year - Yearling Weight EPD, expressed in pounds, is a predictor of a sire’s ability to transmit yearling growth to his progeny compared to that of other sires. Other Production, Carcass and Ultrasound EPDs vary among the breeds, see below.
x
ADG - Average Daily Gain. ADG Rat - Average Daily Gain Ratio. 100 is average. 365 Wt - [((Current Wt - Weaning Wt)/ (Date Current Weight Date - Date of Weaning)) X 160] + 205 day Wt YR - Yearling Ratio. Index of 365 Day Weights within class. 100 is average. WDA - Actual Weight Per Day of Age (Lifetime ADG). RFI - Residual Feed Intake / Net Feed Intake. (Actual feed intake minus expected feed intake) Final Wt - Final Test Weight on 2/5/13 or 3/6/13. MBT Ind - Combined ADG, Nursing, WDA and RFI ratios (1/4 ADG Ratio + 1/4 NR + 1/4 WDA Ratio + 1/4 RFI Ratio) Scrtl - Scrotal Circumference measured in centimeters and semen tested by Bryan Roe, DVM, Elite Bovine Veterinary Service, Inc.
EPDs (Expected Progeny Difference) CED/CE - Calving Ease Direct is expressed as a difference in percentage of unassisted births, with a higher value indicating greater calving ease in first calf heifers. It predicts the average difference in ease with which an sire’s calves will be born when he is bred to first-calf heifers. Scrotal/SC - Scrotal Circumference EPD, expressed in centimeters, is a predictor of the difference in transmitting ability for scrotal size compared to that of other sires. TM/MWW/M&G - Total Maternal, Maternal Weaning Weight EPD measures a sire’s ability to transmit milk production and growth rate through his daughters. It predicts the weaning weight of a sire’s daughters’ calves. It is equal to his Milk EPD plus one-half his weaning weight EPD. CEM/MCE - Calving Ease Maternal is expressed as a difference in percentage of unassisted births with a higher value indicating greater calving ease in first-calf daughters. It predicts the average ease with which a sire’s daughters will calve as first-calf heifers when compared to daughters of other sires. Marbling - Intramuscular Fat EPD is a predictor of the difference in a sire’s progeny for percent intramuscular fat in the ribeye muscle compared to other sires. (Angus, Red Angus and Simmental give ultrasound derived EPDs) REA - Ribeye area EPD is a predictor of the difference in square inches of ribeye area of a sire’s progeny compared to the progeny of other sires. (Angus, Red Angus and Simmental give ultrasound derived EPDs) Fat - Fat thickness EPD, expressed in inches, is a predictor of the difference in external fat thickness at the 12th rib of a sire’s progeny compared to the progeny of other sires. It includes the weighted average of 60% of the rib fat measurement and 40% of the rump fat measurement. (Angus, Red Angus and Simmental give ultrasound derived EPDs) CW/CWT - Carcass Weight EPD, expressed in pounds, is a predictor of the differences in hot carcass weight of a sire’s progeny compared to progeny of other sires. $BV - Beef Value, an index value expressed in dollars per head, is the expected average difference in future progeny performance for postweaning and carcass value compared to progeny of other sires.

The American Gelbvieh Association’s (AGA) January 2013 EPDs are based on a new collaborative national cattle evaluation (NCE) with the American Simmental Association (ASA). Below is a summary of some of the enhancements to the AGA new generation EPDs, followed by trait averages and percentile charts.
Multi-Breed EPDs Provide More Complete Balancer EPDs The true multi-breed EPD NCE conducted by the ASA enables the inclusion of more progeny data from Red Angus and Angus sires, especially for the carcass traits.
Growth Traits are More Reliable
Gelbvieh and Balancer® Share a Common Base with Simmental and Red Angus
The new EPDs for weaning weight (WW), yearling weight (YW) and carass weight (CW) are more reliable because the new statistical process accepts a wider age window for weaning weight. This is especially beneficial for breeders that wean calves early due to drought. Historically, weights from early-weaned calves were not included in the NCE.
Gelbvieh and Balancer EPDs are now on the same base with Simmental and Red Angus, which means that EPDs for each trait (except stayability) are directly comparable to ASA and Red Angus Association of America (RAAA) EPDs. This was a huge, progressive decision by the AGA Board of Directors, made to simplify bull selection for commercial producers.
Carcass Traits are Standardized In recent years, Gelbvieh and Balancer carcass traits were adjusted to a fat end-point instead of an age endpoint like the rest of the industry. AGA’s transition to age-adjusted carcass EPDs will eliminate the gaps in the U.S. Meat Animal Research Center’s carcass EPD breed comparisons. This change also means that the days-tofinish (DtF) EPD is replaced by a fat (FT) EPD. A yield grade (YG) EPD is also new. For both FT and YG, lower EPDs are typically more favorable. For questions or more information contact the AGA at 303-465-2333 or visit www.gelbvieh.org.
Calving Ease and Calving Ease Daughters EPDs Converted to Industry Standard Terminology For over 25 years, the AGA calving ease (CE) and calving ease daughter (CED) EPDs were reported in the form of a ratio. They are now reflected as percentages. Higher CE values equal fewer unassisted births from sires when mated to first-calf heifers. Higher CED EPDs indicate less calving difficulty from a sire’s own first-calf daughters.
