PRESIDENT’S VIEW
Increasing Demand Demand for Gelbvieh and Balancer® genetics is increasing, as evident from the higher sale averages this bull sale season. That demand is driven by the programs and services provided from the fees AGA members pay in herd assessments. By Rob Arnold FOR MANY OF us, this past winter has been more than any of us wanted to deal with. From record-setting snow falls to record number of days below zero temperatures, I for one am happy to see spring. Even through this difficult winter, we are continuing to see record prices in the beef industry. Quality genetics that do what the customer asks of them – calve easy, breed back on time, wean heavy, grow fast, feed efficiently, hit Quality and Yield Grade targets, and provide a satisfying eating experience – are receiving a premium on today’s markets. Gelbvieh and Balancer® cattle do all of these things, and the proof of the premiums has been seen this bull sale season. Across the country, Gelbvieh and Balancer bull sales have seen an increase in sale prices of about 20 percent on average. In addition, more bulls are getting sold. At the time of writing this column, the annual AGA herd assessments are coming in at a steady pace. I want to thank all of the members for your continued commitment to the American Gelbvieh Association through your herd assessments. You have often heard that herd assessments are the life-line of the AGA, and that is no small statement. The programs and services for AGA members and commercial users of Gelbvieh and Balancer genetics would not be possible without the $25 per cow fee. And it is these programs and services that drive premiums to our cattle. The total herd reporting (THR) system is a key component of the HAS process. But beyond the $25 fee,
6 | APRIL 2014
which is among the lowest of all breed associations, THR provides a more complete database to allow for more accurate genetic predictions through EPDs. I would like to remind everyone that data for the summer EPD run is due April 30. Registering all your calves, and imputing all weaning and yearling data by the end of the month will give more power to your EPDs. As you register your calves, consider including the A.I. date or pasture in and out dates of natural service sires. This information can be easily entered right along with the birth date, birth weight, sex, color, and horned/ polled status. Also, enter the calving ease score, and dam docility and udder scores if you have collected that information at calving. If you’ve taken the time to collect the data, get it out of your calving books and into the AGA registry. Submitting this data becomes invaluable in the Association’s efforts to “own maternal.” The strength of the AGA’s EPDs for heifer pregnancy, 30-month pregnancy, and the maternal index is dependent on this information. Additionally, payment of your HAS allows members to transfer cattle free of charge. Be sure to transfer all the bulls and females sold this spring to take advantage of this service that benefits both members and your commercial customers. All commercial customers will receive a free one-year subscription to Gelbvieh World and The Profit Picture. New buyers receive an information packet about the breed and the AGA. A transferred registration paper provides commercial customers a connection back to their seedstock provider, and solidifies the seedstock breeder’s reputation as a professional cattle producer committed to genetic improvement. As we look forward to spring, we can ride the momentum from record prices in the beef industry and increasing demand for Gelbvieh and Balancer genetics. FFF

EXECUTIVE’S VIEW
Thinking Whole Herd Seedstock producers not only must keep detailed individual records, but also must have accurate, whole herd inventory information like weaned calf crop percentages and heifer pregnancy rates. By Dr. Jim Gibb DON’T YOU JUST love “aha” moments? Those rare (too rare for me) times when things finally make sense. Just recently while reading BEEF magazine, I was reminded of an “aha” moment I had about 20 years ago while visiting the Rex Ranch near Whitman, Nebraska. Then manager, Burke Teichert was showing me around the ranch, explaining the multiple aspects of their management system, including grazing, herd health, winter feeding, replacement heifer selection, bull selection, employee management, etc. It was then that everything began to make sense, largely because Burke’s methods were simple, disciplined and effective.
Complete and honest records More specifically was Burke’s recent comment in BEEF about finding the right seedstock producer that has a similar management system, culls cows like his commercial customers and maintains and uses, “very complete, honest, and detailed record.” Burke also emphasized the need for commercial producers to focus on
8 | APRIL 2014
whole herd, inventory-based record keeping systems, and went on to say, “I want to trust a seedstock provider to understand my objectives and make bulls to help me reach those objectives.” Simply put, while commercial producers don’t need to keep detailed records on individual animals, it’s critical that they have simple methods for selecting replacements and culling cows. Seedstock producers not only must keep detailed individual records, but also must have accurate, whole herd inventory information like weaned calf crop percentages and heifer pregnancy rates.
Taking the next step The American Gelbvieh Association was a leader in implementing an inventorybased fee structure by including cow assessments as part of the Association’s fee structure about 25 years ago. This system was a “hybrid” of individual registration fees, transfer fees, and cow assessment. And now, just a few years ago, the AGA went to a simplified, all-in-one cow
assessment structure. Seeing the need to take the next whole herd step and make it easier for AGA members to submit individual animal data and retrieve herd productivity reports, the AGA Board of Directors voted in late 2012 to transition to a different service provider for our registry system. Unfortunately, due to circumstances beyond AGA’s control, that system did not materialize. The good news is we were able to contract with another company with a better system. AGA staff has been working with DigitalBeef over the last couple of months to load AGA’s database and business rules into the new system with the intent of going live by this summer. There is still much work to be done. However, the end result will be a system with enhanced, convenient data entry, plus more flexible and useful, individual and herd information. AGA members will continue to have the ability to generate reports for within herd selection and management plus demonstrate whole-herd productivity to share with their current and future commercial customers. GPA Applications due May 1 for the 2013 Management Year GPA applications for the 2013 management year are due on or before May 1. The application is pretty painless – simply requiring members to list the data they have collected during the last year. Members receive points for having growth and performance records, using AI, doing genomics/DNA testing, and using sires that excel in tenderness, carcass value, milk and scrotal circumference. The GPA program is unique within the seedstock industry. It provides a means for Gelbvieh breeders, both small and large, to promote the performance aspects of their program. The GPA program has three recognition levels – bronze, silver, and gold – based on the total points received for the performance attributes of each program. From now through May 1, 2014, the AGA will be accepting qualification forms for the fifth year of this program. Instructions and qualification forms can be found on the AGA website in the Membership/Member Programs section or can be obtained by requesting them from the AGA office. A May 1 deadline allows for review of the forms in time to recognize qualifying members in the July 2014 Herd Reference Edition of the Gelbvieh World. To receive recognition, qualification forms and worksheets should be filled out completely and any supporting documentation included. Multiple memberships that include animals that are managed together can be submitted on one application and will be recognized at the achieved level of those grouped memberships.
AGJA Sets Regional Show Schedule The American Gelbvieh Junior Association hosts two regional shows during the summer. Typically a three day event, the shows provide competition and show opportunities on a smaller, more local level for AGJA members. The AGJA Eastern Regional Show will be held May 23-25, 2014 in Bardstown, Ky., and is sponsored by the Kentucky Gelbvieh Association. The AGJA Western Regional Show will be held June 14-15, 2014 in Concordia, Kan., and is sponsored by the Kansas Gelbvieh Junior Association.
BITS ‘N PIECES Gustin Inducted into North Dakota Agriculture Hall of Fame Long time farm broadcaster and Gelbvieh producer, Al Gustin, was recently inducted into the North Dakota Agriculture Hall of Fame at the North Dakota Winter Show in Valley City.
Did You Know? Missouri is now ranked number two for having the most beef cows in the U.S. moving above Nebraska which is now number three. Texas remains the number one state for total beef cows.
"I started in 1967 when I was in college so I ended up with about 45 years. The thing that I remember the most or means the most is when you would get positive feedback either from the newspapers that you work with or from the audience. People say that they really appreciate that you came into their home every day and brought them the information that they wanted. That is kinda what keeps you going,” Al Gustin, ND Ag Hall of Fame Inductee. Gustin retired from Farm Broadcasting in December of 2012. He continues to be an active partner on the Gustin Diamond D Gelbvieh Ranch, south of Mandan. Gustin was inducted on March 8, 2014 with soil scientist Al Black. The North Dakota Agriculture Hall of Fame started in 1997 to honor men and women who have dedicated their lives to agriculture. There are roughly 40 individuals in the hall of fame. Photo and story submitted by Sarah Gustin.
More than 500 cattlemen, academics, and industry representatives attended the 2013 Beef Improvement Federation annual meeting. This year’s event will be held June 18-21 in Lincoln, Nebraska. A.I. sires must be DNA typed, parent verified, have a GGP-HD profile, and have an A.I. permit before any offspring can be registered or computed. Record high prices were set in all segments of the beef industry in 2013. The average herd size for AGA members is 34.9 cows. In 2012-2013, 127,991 publications were distributed by the AGA in the promotion of Gelbvieh and Balancer® cattle.

BREED PROMOTION MINUTE
Gaining Market Share Breeds and individual breeders compete for buyers in the market place. Recent surveys and sale reports show a shift in the marketplace as to what commercial producers are purchasing and sale reports show what they are willing to pay for quality genetics. By Frank Padilla THERE IS A shift occurring in the marketplace. Commercial producers are once again looking at crossbreeding and the advantages it gives them to produce cattle that are highly productive while still meeting downstream market targets. Cow-calf producers understand that the next few years and high

prices paid for their calves gives them the opportunity to rebuild their cow herds. And to rebuild those herds with genetics that are better than those of the cows they had to cull because of drought.
Considering the investment this is going to take, they are eliminating risk. They are rebuilding with what is known to work. They are doing it by incorporating planned crossbreeding into their programs. They are buying hybrid seedstock. The color of the hide is no longer, and never has been, the only indicator of quality and productivity. When you talk to commercial producers they tell of the consequences of not utilizing crossbreeding. They have seen lower weaning weights. They have seen a higher percentage of heifers not getting bred as yearlings. They have seen the lack of stayability in their cow herds and cows exiting the herd at a younger age for not rebreeding. They have seen the lack of ability of cattle adapting to their environments. As they rebuild their cow herds, cow-calf producers are not going to go down this path again. They have seen what it has cost them in lost revenue. The cooperation of the American Gelbvieh Association and other breed associations has built the largest multi-breed genetic evaluation in the world. The breed associations and partners involved in International Genetic Solutions have dedicated themselves to the beef industry in doing what is in the best interest for all those involved – seedstock breeders, commercial cow-calf producers, packers, and beef consumers. The goal of those involved in International Genetic Solutions (IGS) is to provide the genetics and genetic resources to maximize profits for commercial producers. When it comes to establishing a profit-maximizing genetic program, IGS provides the most powerful selection tools available to cattlemen.

of the Gelbvieh breed to commercial cattlemen. Arguably, it is the most significant program in the beef business today that has the biggest impact to producers of beef. It is indeed a great time to be in the cattle business. We are re-writing history in prices received in all segments of the industry. The demand for genetics that drive profitability and productivity while still meeting industry standards in carcass quality has never been better. Gelbvieh and Balancer® cattle have proven themselves in all segments of the industry to be cattle that drive profit. They are maternally superior, have less mature size, more calving ease, and produce more pounds weaned per cow exposed. Gelbvieh and Balancer sired feeder cattle have superior carcass weights and Yield Grade, while still meeting Quality Grade grids. Eliminate your risk as you rebuild your cow herd. Use Gelbvieh and Balancer for all the right reasons. Records and reports are showing that your neighbors are. FFF

DISPOSITION SCORING Link May Exist Between Disposition and Reproduction Experience tells most producers that high strung, poorly tempered stock, sometimes do not perform as well as herd mates with a more moderate disposition. By Ryan Sterry, University of Wisconsin Extension SCIENCE HAS BACKED this up in the feedlot with studies showing steers with calmer dispositions out-gaining steers with the most excitable temperaments. Links are also being made by research between disposition and health, including response to vaccination. Most of all, stock with a bad temperament pose a greater risk to you being injuring during handling.
Determining if a link exits between reproductive performance and disposition has been difficult to prove. Anecdotally, producers and A.I. technicians have noted that cows with bad temperaments are less likely to conceive to A.I. However, putting hard numbers to this has proven difficult.

State University by Reinaldo Cooke, crossbred heifers were divided into two groups. After weaning, one group was trained for handling by being brought up from pasture to a pen three times a week, for four weeks, so that they’d become acclimated to people and going through a working chute. The other group was not handled during this time and was left on pasture. Both groups were tested for the hormone Cortisol. This hormone is associated with stress and is part of the “fight or flight” response in animals. When Cortisol levels are elevated, it is an indicator of stress. Some research indicates elevated cortisol levels impair the naturally occurring reproductive hormones LH and FSH, and could help explain why stressed or poorly tempered animals may have poorer fertility. Since these were young heifers not ready to breed yet, you might be asking what could possibly be proven by this experiment. The results of this study found two important differences in the trained group that could impact reproduction down the road. First, the group that was handled had lower Cortisol levels at the end of the four week training period than the non-trained group. Secondly, the trained group reached puberty at a faster rate than the non-trained heifers, with nearly a 20 percent difference in the number of heifers cycling five, six, and seven months after the project began. Having these heifers start cycling sooner can greatly improve reproduction by allowing heifers to be bred sooner and calve early
in the calving season. These heifers will ultimately have more time to recover before breeding again as first calf heifers, and have a greater opportunity to maintain an early caving interval throughout their lives.
of the breeding season. However, when disposition score was looked at alone regardless of treatment, cows with the most agitated and aggressive scores had lower pregnancy rates at the end of the 90 day breeding season. Putting a temperament score to your own stock is rather easy. Use a scale of 1 to 5, with one being calm, and five being very excited and/ or aggressive towards people. This scoring scale can be used while animals are in the chute and when they are in the pen. A chute exit speed score and also be assigned as animals leave the chute, with one being the slowest and five the fastest. These three scores can be averaged to give an overall score to each animal.
Cows with poorer disposition scores had lower pregnancy rates A similar study was done at the University of Florida by Cooke, this time with mature cows. One group had the same worker walk the pen twice a week offering the cows a small treat (range cubes), while the control group was left alone on pasture. In this case, the group that was worked with showed no difference in Cortisol levels or pregnancy rate at the end

disposition and reproduction has not been made yet, research is starting to show tendencies that one may exist. A key point of this early research is temperament and fertility is not just a concern for A.I. breeding. Studies using natural service bulls have shown the same tendency for poorly tempered cows to have poorer fertility. Bottom line, there are already many good reasons to cull cattle with bad temperaments, to consider disposition as part of your breeding criteria, and train your stock to be handled. If you don’t already do so, improving reproduction is one more reason to reconsider adding these management practices to your herd. FFF

HERD BULL MANAGEMENT Are the Bulls Ready for the Spring Breeding Season? The spring breeding season is almost here. If you have not assessed your bull battery recently, time is running out. By Glenn Selk, Oklahoma State University CONTACT YOUR LOCAL veterinarian and make arrangements to see that your bulls of all ages pass a breeding soundness exam. Ask your veterinarian about the need for a trichomoniasis test. If the bulls’ feet need to be trimmed, this would be an excellent opportunity to get that done as well. Bulls that do not pass a breeding soundness exam will need to be replaced before the start of breeding. Purchase the replacement from a production sale or nearby seedstock producer as soon as possible. It is advantageous to move the bull to his new environment several weeks before breeding. If the bull has been
consuming a high energy, grain-based diet, this will give you time to gradually reduce the grain and increase the forage intake. The rumen will take some time to adjust to the forage-based diet that he will consume during the breeding season. A very sudden, steep decline in energy intake could cause a decrease in bull fertility. Therefore a gradual change over several weeks will produce more positive results. Bulls that will be placed together in multi-sire breeding pastures should be penned together for several weeks before the breeding season begins. Bulls WILL establish a social order. This needs to be settled before the first of the breeding season. We would prefer that cows are getting bred during the first part of the breeding season rather than bulls fighting each other. Bulls are a sizeable investment in most cow-calf operations. Common sense management before the breeding season can give the best possible return on that investment. FFF

VIEW OF THE NUMBERS Let the AGA Registry Manage Contemporary Groups The deadline for submitting data for the summer national cattle evaluation EPD run is April 30. Understanding contemporary groups and management codes will help ensure most accurate genetic evaluation. By Susan Willmon and AGA Staff A BASIC DEFINITION of a contemporary group is all calves that are managed in a similar fashion. The starting point for the AGA registry is all cows that are managed together. Establishing a master herd and associated herds in the AGA’s Member Online Registry system becomes very helpful. The master herd is simply the main member that is responsible for the data entry and access to the online registry system. The associated herds for this master member should be all the cows that are managed together with the master member’s herd, including other adult members, family members, junior members, and partnerships. All the calves from these females, regardless
20 | APRIL 2014
of ownership, start as the core group. From there the AGA registry system does most of the work.
The registry system will first break contemporary groups by sex. Bull calves and heifer calves are separated into different contemporary groups automatically by the system. A member does not need to enter a code in the “Management Grp” field to separate bulls and heifer calves at birth. The system then breaks contemporary groups by birth date. As calf data is entered, the registry system takes the first calf born then includes all the calves born in the next 90 days. If birth data is entered over a period of days or weeks these contemporary groups are reformed and animal ratios are recalculated. It is recommended that performance data is not printed until all the calves are entered into the system as the ratios will change as new animals within a contemporary group are entered.
Contemporary groups flow from birth to weaning to yearling. In order for animals to be in the same contemporary group at weaning they must be in the same group at birth. Additional contemporary group breaks are then made by the system at weaning and yearling, based on dates recorded for weaning and yearling weights. If bull calves that were born within a 90-day window are weaned a week apart these calves will be separated into two weaning contemporary groups, with ratios calculated according to the two groups. Same applies to yearling dates. Bull calves steered prior to weaning will be put into a separate group as long as a steered date is entered in the weaning screen. After the registry system does its job in making contemporary groups, breeders can use management group codes to separate animals into additional contemporary groups, based on management. For example if one group of cows is wintered on wheat pasture and another group on corn stalks, these calves should be split into two groups. Or perhaps, one group of calves that had access to creep feed while another group did not, they should be split in different management groups. Most commonly, calves that have been sick then separated from the group to be fed and managed differently should have a separate management group code. The same applies to animals developed for show purposes. By entering different management group codes on these animals, the registry system will know to put these animals in separate contemporary groups. Breeders do not need to separate groups based on breed percentage. Heterosis adjustments are applied to birth, weaning and yearling weights, which account for differences in breed percentages and allow animals of differing percentages to be compared together. The “Management Grp” field can be found on each of the My Calving, My Weaning, and My Yearling screens, as well as the AGA Registration Application form. Often times, the reason why certain animals do not receive ratios is because a code was entered in the “Management Grp” field, causing that animal to be excluded or moved into a single animal contemporary group. The AGA recommends minimizing the use of management codes to those cases when needed to accurately separate animals into different contemporary groups based on management. Otherwise, let the registry system do the grouping for you. FFF

FEEDER PROFIT CALCULATOR New, Free Program Designed to Reward and Incentivize Good Genetic and Management Practices A Free Service by International Genetic Solutions In an effort to better serve the commercial beef industry, International Genetic Solutions, and its partners, have developed a tool used to determine relative value of feeder calves based on genetic, environmental and management factors.
conditions can be applied to the index to give potential buyers the most accurate value of the feeder calves available.
INTERNATIONAL GENETIC SOLUTIONS is a cooperation of companies, such as breed associations, whose primary focus is the success of the commercial cattleman. The Feeder Profit Calculator will reward and incentivize better genetic and management practices.
The other way the calculator will be used is to assist individual feedlots or cattle buyers using their specific scenario. A number of feedlots will use the calculator by inputting their specific production factors affecting cost of gain, live price, etc. With that information, these buyers will be able to determine how much a certain set of calves is worth to them specifically.
What does the Feeder Profit Calculator do?
What units are the feeder calf values expressed in?
The calculator weighs all economic factors and traits on a set of feeder calves according to how much money each factor will make a cattle buyer. The calculator is basically a breakeven calculator on steroids. It determines the overall quality of a set of calves and differentiates them from other calves. The calculator is able to adjust the value of calves based on market conditions that affect the cost of gain, value of feedlot calves, the live price of calves, etc. The calculator weighs the genetic components of traits such as feed intake, growth, marbling, Yield Grade, and carcass weight as well as management and environmental factors such as the effects of vaccinations, weaning, deworming, initial weight, etc.
How is the Feeder Profit Calculator used? The Feeder Profit Calculator is not a breeding index but instead rewards the use of good genetics and the use of breeding indexes as well as good management practices. The Feeder Profit Calculator is only meant to be used for marketing purposes. The calculator can be used one of two ways. On large sales involving numerous producers or when used in a non-specific scenario, a “base” price will be established based on the current market information. Since the calculator is interactive, certain current industry
22 | APRIL 2014
Cattle buyers, marketers and breed associations have been determining the value of groups of calves based on genetic and environmental merit for years. They have always expressed feeder calf value by the pound or per hundred-weight (cwt). The Feeder Profit Calculator will be no different and the value will be expressed per hundred-weight.
Is this an unbiased evaluation? This evaluation is completely unbiased. The calculator is provided by a number of breed associations involved in International Genetic Solutions and is simply meant to reward and encourage good genetic and management practices. The calculator is available to all producers regardless of breed. Currently, the predictive ability of the index has the most value on Angus, Continental cross calves. We also have the ability to predict the value of high-percentage British calves. In the near future we will have the ability to determine the value of straightBritish calves.
Who is to credit for the Feeder Profit Calculator’s development? The development of the Feeder Profit Calculator would not have been possible without out such partners
as Dr. David Lalman of Oklahoma State University, Dr. Mike MacNeil of Delta G, CattleFax, and all of the partners of International Genetic Solutions and the multi-breed international genetic evaluation. Their time and effort has shown a true dedication to the improvement and success of the beef industry.
possible on the maternal grandsires of the calves. This information does not need to be on an individual animal basis but simply on a group basis. The producer will also need to provide information on management practices (or intended management practices).
When can a producer use the calculator?
What is the cost of the Feeder Profit Calculator?
Feeder calves can be run through the calculator long before sale time. As long as a producer has the necessary genetic information and has management decisions or intended management decisions established, the Feeder Profit Calculator can be used. If management factors change down the road, the values can be adjusted. The same holds true for changes in market conditions. Producers are encouraged to get genetic information in as early as possible.
The Feeder Profit Calculator is currently free. It is provided as a service to the commercial industry by IGS and its partners in order to help improve practices in the industry. IGS does not intend to profit off the calculator but only wishes to see the genetic and management practices of the beef industry rise to new levels. In fact, IGS and its partners (universities, breeders, etc.) believe in this cause so much that they are willing to subsidize the program.
How does a commercial producer run his feeder calves through the Feeder Profit Calculator?
What information does a commercial cattleman need in order to use the calculator?
Simply call up IGS representatives Will Townsend (406-548-5770) or Frank Padilla (308-350-3323) to get started. FFF
The producer will need to provide information on the sires of the calves and as much information as

Get More Value from DNA with GE EPDs Genomic-enhanced EPDs (GE EPDs) combine pedigree, individual performance and genomic information to save time and money, reduce risk, and accelerate rate of genetic progress.
What is the difference between Genomic Option 1: GGP- HD and Genomic Option 2: GGP-LD?
• Get more accurate EPDs on bulls and females 2 to 4 years sooner • Select superior young sires that will accelerate genetic improvement • Identify sires to use for specific corrective mating situations • More accurately select sires that excel in feedlot and carcass traits, especially marbling • Choose bulls that can be confidently used on replacement heifers
Genomics Option 1 – Gelbvieh Genomic ProfilerHD (high density) ‐ $85.00 • 80K High-Density SNP Profile • Includes parent verification at no extra cost if requested on the order form • Required for AI sires and donor dams as of April 1, 2013 Genomics Option 2 – Gelbvieh Genomic ProfilerLD (low density) - $55.00 • 8K Low‐Density SNP Profile, a cost effective reduced panel • Animals will automatically receive molecular breeding values (MBVs) • Includes parent verification at no extra cost if requested on the order form
Replacement Heifers and Donor Prospects
To order DNA tests:
Save Time and Money
• Find maternally focused bulls that will produce superior replacement females • Select replacement heifers and potential donor dams with more confidence • Get EPDs with ACC values equal to or greater than a lifetime of progeny • Test ET flush mates to assess their true genetic differences
Go to www.gelbvieh.org, click on Education Center/DNA Testing for more information or call the AGA office at 303-465‐2333. Please allow at least 3 weeks for results. Progeny equivalents for GGP testing per trait. Correlation*

JUNIOR VOICE
Tips for the AGJA Sales Talk Contest Practicing for the sales talk contest prior to the Junior Classic can help you be a champion. When you’re out doing chores, practice selling your animals to your parents, siblings, friends. By Van Tucker AS THIS YEAR’S show season rolls around I can imagine all of you AGJA members out in the replacement pen analyzing your next show animal or nervously bidding on that next champion. But that’s only one part of our national show. The other part of the AGJA Junior Classic is competing against your friends and age group to hopefully come out on top. As you work with your cattle and count down the months until you can pack the trailer and head to the 2014 Barnyard Classic I challenge you to think outside the box and find ways to prepare yourself for this year’s contests. One of my favorite contests is sales talk. It is a contest that can be related back to my own cattle operation. In the end we all want to sell our genetics for the most possible and one way to help is with sales talk. One easy way to practice is during the next time your mom or dad is helping you do chores try to sell your animal to them. The more you practice the more comfortable you
will feel when the actual contest rolls around. Keep in mind you want to be fluent and not have long periods of silence. I liked to ask the judges about their operation and use that to my benefit, tell them how your heifer could improve their operation. Another way to help make a sale is to group animals together and give them a discount. It never hurts to try to sell them the whole group, the worst that could happen is they say no and if that happens, you just have to try and work out another deal. Try to think if you were in the judge’s position, especially if you are stuck in the middle or towards the end of the contest. They have heard 20 other kids before you, so make yourself standout. Lastly be confident when you go into it. With a few months of practice you can be the champion salesperson at the 2014 Classic. FFF

Flying H Genetics Roughage N’ Ready Bull Sale March 1, 2014 Arapahoe, Neb. Reported by: Dick Helms
Black Balancer® Bulls $5,878 Fusion Bulls $5,813 Red Balancer Bulls $5,304 Black Gelbvieh Bulls $5,300 Black SimAngus Bulls $5,126 94 Bulls Averaged $5,557 Gelbvieh Females $7,750 Balancer Females $5,000 SmartCross® Breds/Pairs $2,500 SmartCross Open Heifers $1,500
ON MARCH 1, 2014, the Flying H Genetics 34th annual sale was the coldest ever held, with temperatures of seven degrees, winds at 30 mph and light snow. Topping the sale was Lot 2, a homozygous black, homozygous polled Balancer® son of Schiefelbein Effective. This balanced genetic package was a 3-star heifer bull and sold to longtime Colorado customers, Bledsoe Livestock, for $14,000. Lot 21 was valued at $9,000 by Kunkel Ranch who always buys one of the top bulls and their calf sales show it. He was sired by Flying H Genetics’ senior Balancer herd sire, Flying H Professor 22W. The second high selling group were the Fusion bulls, a composite of black or red Angus combined with Gelbvieh and Simmental into a very useful three breed composite. The Fusion bulls averaged $5,812 with the top one going to another longtime Nebraska customer,
Kranau Ranch, for $9,000. The red Balancer bulls were topped by a homozygous polled son of Flying H Professor 22W, sold to Jones Ranch in Alabama for $7,000, another longtime customer. This heavy muscled beef bull offered 5-star genetics across the board with a 1.7-114 birth to yearling EPD spread and a carcass value of $92.73. Two bulls in the purebred Gelbvieh division sold for $8,000, both going to repeat customers in Nebraska, Bauer Gelbvieh and Kranau Ranch. The SimAngus section was topped by a Beef Maker 102Y son at $6,500. Topping the female offering was a red, polled purebred that combined phenotype, production and balanced genetic strength. This Flying H Landmark 51P daughter sold for $10,250 to Shifflet Ranch and will be placed in their donor program. The top Balancer, Lot 118, was a double homozygous daughter of Connealy Industry and sold to Bill and Marie Farr for $5,750. The commercial Gelbvieh x Angus SmartCross® heifer pairs and yearling heifers were well received from $1,500 to $2,800. Volume buyers were Dale Wanger, Oklahoma with 12 bulls; Kranau Ranch, Byron Pike, and Stan Farr with five bulls each. Mark Farr and Blake Steinkruger were volume buyers of the SmartCross females. FFF
