Building Leaders for Tomorrow
by Megan Slater
T
he youth of today are the leaders of tomorrow. That said, let’s take a brief look at how our junior association got its start. The first meeting of what was then called the “Gelbvieh Gang” took place on September 28, 1974, in Vail, Colorado. After its inception, annual meetings of the Gelbvieh Gang were held during the National Western Stock Show. It wasn’t until 1981 that the annual meeting was moved and held in conjunction with a summer show that took place July 15-16 in Fremont, Nebraska. This show was considered the first junior national Gelbvieh show. The American Gelbvieh Junior Association (AGJA) was formed to develop the breed’s leaders and future membership and continues to do so today.
The AGJA Junior Classic isn’t just “another cattle show.” Sure, cattle are exhibited, and it is always exciting to take home a few ribbons and maybe a banner, but the real rewards of junior nationals are the connections and friendships made, experience gained, and life skills learned. Contests like prepared speaking and sales talk teach important verbal communication skills in a world that has gone so digital. Quiz bowl and skill-a-thon contests help sharpen the minds of young cattlemen and women by testing their knowledge of the beef industry. Livestock judging instills communication, problemsolving, and decision-making. The list goes on with all of the valuable lessons learned from the multiple contests set on a national stage.
The 2021 AGJA Southern Hospitality Classic marked the 40th junior national show for the association. Last month, I wrote about the American Gelbvieh Association’s (AGA) 50th anniversary and the events that have brought us to this golden anniversary. I would be remiss not to mention the AGJA in that list of successes or the list of contributions. A healthy junior association is a vital piece in having a successful breed organization.
Today’s youth are the future of the AGA and the future of the beef industry. With the many outside pressures facing today’s industry, from government regulations to animal rights groups, preparing our young people has never been more important. Franklin D. Roosevelt once said, “We cannot always build the future for our youth, but we can build our youth for the future.” With the ever-changing world that we are living in, this quote certainly rings true. We can’t predict the future or what challenges lie ahead for our young people, but we can help to prepare them to face those challenges. Things like a strong work ethic, good morals, values, and the skills I’ve mentioned above are the tools that will always prove to be valuable in any series of events. F
There have been countless individuals who have come through the AGJA to become leaders in the breed and the industry. Several past AGJA board members have served on the AGA board of directors, and many have held leadership roles. Additionally, it is always great to see past members of the AGJA board coming back to bring their children to the junior classic and running for the board.

AGJA Builds Leaders by Laura Handke
O
n the heels of the National Gelbvieh Junior Show, it’s easy to reflect on the fun times, the camaraderie and achievements that naturally come from a week spent with friends. But as American Gelbvieh Junior Association (AGJA) members, have you taken the time to think about the long-term investments being made? What investments are you making in the AGJA, and what investment is the association making in you? For this special AGJA-focused edition of Gelbvieh World, we caught up with longtime American Gelbvieh Association (AGA) and former AGJA members, Callahan Grund and Jana Powles-Jensen, to learn more about the investments they exchanged with the AGJA and the dividends they received.
Planting Roots Both leaders in the agriculture industry, Grund and Powles-Jensen remain active contributors within the Gelbvieh and Balancer® breed and share that their time within the association has offered opportunity far beyond their AGJA membership eligibility. “[AGJA has] truly been a family event for us from day one. Our family joined the breed about 40 years ago, and my dad and his sisters were on the junior board,” Grund says. “I joined AGJA in 2003 and I got to experience my first junior nationals in 2005. Our family has always been heavily involved in the junior association.” Grund says that the relationships he developed through the AGJA, at a young age, have been integral in shaping both his educational and professional careers. “To this day, some of my best friends are kids that I met through AGJA. It is such a tight-knit group, not just AGJA, but AGA, as well. It’s like a family,” he says. “We always pushed one another to do our best and be our best, and we always had great role models to look up to both in AGJA and the AGA.” AGJA has also been a steadfast component of the Powles family, with Jana and her brother, Bryon Powles, both serving on the AGJA board in the 1980s and ‘90s, building friendships and skills along the way. “My brother and I attended national shows for many years, traveling all over the country and meeting new
8 | AUGUST 2021
people within the breed,” Powles-Jensen says, “and you know, some of those friendships that you develop become lifelong friendships that span not just the cattle industry, but your life.”
Growing Leaders While the junior association helped to build lifelong friendships for both Grund and Powles-Jensen, the communication and networking skills both gained also continue to serve them. Today, both Grund and PowlesJensen serve the agriculture industry and its members through outreach, development, and communication. As executive director of the national cattle traceability group, U.S. CattleTrace, Grund, serves as a liaison between the CattleTrace board of directors and the cattle industry to carryout the mission of cattle traceability on a national level. “I think the biggest thing for me, professionally and especially in my current position within the cattle industry, was being on the junior board and ultimately getting to serve as the board president my last year as a junior member. The leadership and the knowledge gained of working as a board on behalf of an association of members has been really valuable,” Grund says. “I learned how to communicate between boards, make sure that everyone was on the same page and then execute the action plans that were discussed. That’s what I do every day in my current position.” Today, Powles-Jensen serves as affiliated fund development coordinator for the Nebraska Community Foundation and fundraising coordinator for the Nebraska Cattlemen Research and Education Foundation. She also previously spent time with the Baldridge Company, a purebred livestock marketing company, and the Nebraska Cattlemen’s Association in the role of vice president of member services. She says that the experiences and activities she was able to garner through AGJA helped prepare her for all of the jobs she has had and certainly her present career. “AGJA provided me a leadership role on a national level,” she says. “The experiences I gained through the association made me comfortable talking to people of all
FEATURE GW ages about cattle, and the network of producers I was able to build while showing all over the country helped me in college when we were looking for places to judge.”
Harvesting Success For the youth currently involved, or thinking of becoming involved in AGJA, Powles-Jensen and Grund agree that there is no better personal and professional development opportunity available, and both agree that looking to the leadership in both the AGJA and AGA is the starting point. “My biggest advice to current and future AGJA members is to look at the leadership. So many members go on to become successful in the beef industry, and
leaning on those examples, latching onto a couple of board members and learning all you can from them now will set you up for success later in life,” Grund says. “And to the leaders and those who aspire to be future leaders of AGJA, you always have little eyes on you. Kids look up to you, be your best and set the example that was set for you.” Powles-Jensen concludes, sharing that what a young person gains from membership in AGJA is an opportunity to build a network unlike any other, especially if agriculture is a career aspiration. “If ag is the world that you want to be in, the networking and connections becoming a member of a junior association provides are unmatched. They are absolutely priceless.” F

GW JUNIOR NEWS
Sweet Tea and Southern Hospitality
by Jake W. Renner, M.S.
T
he American Gelbvieh Junior Association (AGJA) and its members headed south to Batesville, Mississippi, for the 2021 AGJA Southern Hospitality Classic. Countless hours in conversation with the 10-member board of directors, sponsors, families, our generous host state and other supporters led to another successful year for our junior association. I am again reminded of the blessings that surround our junior members and their families. We came with hopeful hearts and goals set long before arriving in Batesville and left with memories to last a lifetime. It is hard to believe that this was my third junior classic as the American Gelbvieh Association (AGA) member and youth activities coordinator. This role is not a job but an opportunity to continue sharing my passion for youth development, leadership and cattle with incredible young leaders. It is not a responsibility that I take lightly. Regardless of how many times I have done this, each year is different. I adjust and adapt to new situations, people and the inevitable obstacles. The AGJA board members and the team supporting them continue to lean on each other for advice and recognize the importance of putting the membership first. We often talk in our meetings about the ability to look beyond ourselves and do what’s best for the membership. Discussions are always a reflection of where improvements can be made, along with our successes and our failures. Above all, our mission as members of this association, volunteers, advisors and even the AGA staff is to unify, educate and develop leaders of the beef industry. We continue to stand strong in membership and as a breed because of our innate ability to see the best in others and provide an atmosphere of inclusion. In my time as the junior coordinator, I’ve not seen as many rookies (first-time classic attendees) as I did in Batesville. We hope that all new members in attendance felt welcome and appreciated through activities like the mentor/protégé program, opening ceremonies, during meals and the dance. I can tell you from personal experience, once you have gotten a taste of the Gelbvieh junior classic, you will never want to miss one. There is a sense of belonging and family during this event each summer, and it is a feeling not found at most events of

this size. The junior classic is a place where members from all over the country come to share their ideas and passion for this versatile breed and the men and women who continue to choose Gelbvieh and Balancer® genetics. Thank you to those who continue to support the future of this breed through its junior members and the events that take place on their behalf. We could not make events like this happen without the generous donations, sponsorships, volunteer time and dedication of our sponsors and host state. The AGJA board of directors, with support from the AGJA advisors, put in countless hours of preparation. It takes us all to make the classic possible each year. Thank you to our host state, the Mississippi Gelbvieh Association (MGA), for showing our exhibitors and families the true meaning of Southern hospitality. MGA members never failed to ask, even in the months leading up to the show, “How can I help?” “Do you need anything?” and, in doing so, reminded us with a humble heart and smile how appreciative the MGA was that we were visiting Mississippi this year. I hope the week ended the way you hoped it would in the contest classrooms, at the backdrop or just in making new friends. If it didn’t, I challenge you to make a goal to achieve just that in Kansas next summer at the 2022 AGJA Crossroads Classic in Salina, Kansas, July 3-8, 2022. Maybe the goals you set need a slight adjustment or possibly even set higher. Set your goals high enough that they require a genuine effort but not so high they seem unattainable. I choose to live by the following saying in an attempt to keep myself grounded yet driven for more: “If your dreams don’t scare you, they aren’t big enough.” Focus on the future and give yourself grace as you chase those dreams. This year may not have ended the way you had hoped, but in that reflection, find the factor within your power to improve. Study longer on those quiz bowl statements, practice showmanship an hour longer each night, make sound decisions as you judge cattle throughout the year or ask more questions to your peers; you have plenty of influential mentors at your disposal within the AGJA. To my retiring board members, it has been my greatest honor to work alongside each of you. Each year, I learn something new about myself as a mentor and

teammate. I have you to thank for that. I wish you all the best of luck in your future endeavors. The future of the Gelbvieh breed, and the beef industry, is brighter because you chose to serve your peers. I look forward to seeing where your paths take you after your years spent in the teal jacket. Know that just because we will not see each other across the board room this fall, I am still your biggest advocate and cheerleader. For the newest members of our team, I hope you recognize the honor that has been bestowed upon you by your peers. You have earned an opportunity many only dream of, and others before you have worked tirelessly to serve. Please do not take the next two years for granted—they will go fast.
us one you talk about for years to come. I will continue to work for the members and families of the AGJA to ensure we uphold the mission and traditions of the Gelbvieh breed and the AGJA. We will continue to build strong leaders and advocates of the beef industry with each passing year. You have a faithful and humble team working diligently for you. Through everything you encountered in preparation for this year, and in the hopes of attending the 2022 AGJA Crossroads Classic in Kansas, remember one thing: be where your feet are. Focus on the task at hand and remember why you do this and the silent supporters you have across the country wishing you nothing but the best in all you do. F

THANK YOU To our Gelbvieh friends and family:
As parents, you always hope to give your children the best possible experiences so they can be surrounded by opportunities and good people. The American Gelbvieh Association has given us all we could have ever dreamed of for our kids. Justin, Kyle, and Grace have grown up in the AGJA, beginning back in Greeley, Colorado in 2005. Together, our family has shared countless memories made possible by the AGJA – whether that be serving as Ambassadors and Board of Directors or simply sharing a meal with friends after a long day in the barn. We are humbled by the years of friendship and support given to our family. It seems bittersweet that we will not have a kid competing in Junior Nationals anymore, but it is safe to say that we will always be around. We look forward to seeing how our role in the AGA and AGJA will shift. With this being said, we truly just wanted to say thank you to all of you for being great friends to us and even better role models for our children. We are incredibly grateful to have had the opportunity to cross paths with such great people. Thank you for all you have done for our family. With gratitude, Tom & Stacy Vehige
We hope to see you at our Focused on the Future Bull and Female Sale this October 22, 2021. For additional information or with inquiries, call Justin at (573) 690-3813, Kyle at (573) 645-8819, or refer to our Facebook page.

GW JUNIOR CONNECTION
Junior Nationals Recap
by Alexx Starr
A
merican Gelbvieh Junior Association (AGJA) juniors and their families enjoyed a great week in Batesville, Mississippi, at the 2021 Southern Hospitality Classic, which provided nothing short of the event’s name. On behalf of the AGJA, I would like to extend a huge thank you to the Mississippi Gelbvieh Association for working tirelessly to host such an outstanding junior show and to all of our AGJA sponsors who played an important part in making sure we had a great week. In addition, the AGA staff, AGJA advisors and the junior board all worked tirelessly throughout the year to help organize and make the junior classic a special event for all of those involved. For me, a highlight of the week was the mentor/ protege activity. It was a fun race, thanks to Madalynn Welsh, AGJA vice president of leadership development, gathering our biggest group of juniors ever. Many of our past members were also able to meet some of our new junior members and helped them throughout the week with contests and networking. Junior classic is always full of contests, and this one was no different. The events included: skill-a-thon, prepared speaking, judging, quiz bowl, and team fitting, sponsored by Sullivan Supply. All

of the contests were highly competitive, and everyone enjoyed watching the past junior board members compete in a few rounds of quiz bowl at the conclusion of that contest, as well. Mid-week kicked off with senior showmanship, giving the younger juniors a chance to watch and learn from the seniors. The intermediate and junior competition was nothing short of outstanding. After the competition, fun day took place on the fairgrounds. Complete with jumps, water slides, and a whole lot of mud, it was a day to remember, and the weather was perfect. It is always nice to get away for a week, see friends, and have a little fun showing the cattle we have spent months getting ready. That said, for me, while winning the show is icing on the cake, I believe that we, as juniors, need to keep in mind just how fortunate we are to be able to participate—growing up in the Gelbvieh breed is truly like no other. This industry is something we cannot take for granted. The AGJA board of directors and AGA staff will be headed to Salina, Kansas, next year and we cannot wait to see you all there! F

2021 agja southern hospitality Classic Creative Writing winners Each year, AGJA members are offered the opportunity to compete in a creative writing contest to showcase both their writing skills and passion for the beef industry, the winners of this contest are published in this issue, to highlight both their writing skills and subject knowledge. Senior division writers were asked to explain in their own words how they continually adapt to public perception in relation to the industry, and how the industry must adapt to continue producing high-quality beef while marketing their family’s operation and educating the public about the beef community. Intermediate division writers were asked to research, respond and provide examples of how the beef industry has adopted technology to increase production, safety and education. Junior division writers were asked to describe their favorite on-farm experience.
Hear Me Roar
by Grace Vehige, Billings, Missouri
A
research phenomenon I have become particularly accustomed to studying is what is known as the knowledge gap. In very simple terms, a knowledge gap is best defined as the following: a well-educated individual is able to extract information more efficiently from mass media and can therefore learn and absorb information better than a less-educated individual. What is commonly mistaken, however, is how education is classified. When breaking down the meaning of knowledge gap, the education-level used as the parameter for the phenomenon is, in fact, dependent on the topic being discussed. In this case, we are discussing the public’s knowledge of the beef industry. Currently, I am pursuing my master’s degree in agricultural communications. One of the courses I had the privilege of undertaking was focused on the public’s opinion of agriculture and natural resources. In this course, I was challenged to develop a public opinion study. I, of course, chose to conduct my research regarding the public’s perception of the beef industry. What I found was that the knowledge gap regarding the public’s education of the beef community is directly tied to influences on public perception. As background research, yet relative facts to the objective of this excerpt, the following points are known to be true (U.S. Farmers and Ranchers Alliance Survey, 2011): The average American is said to be about three generations away from a farm; less than 2% of Americans are actively involved in food production; 72% of consumers know nothing or very little about farming or ranching; 70% of consumers

say their purchase decisions are affected by how food is grown and raised. When reflecting on these facts, one can only be weary of the current level of education that the public has about the beef industry. This, however, is not a new feat the beef industry is facing. Misinformation is a tactic utilized to combat the beef industry every day. Whether it be through social media, misleading food labels, or the use of false statements, organizations and groups around the world are deceiving consumers about agricultural and beef products. In my public opinion study, I conducted a series of interviews with individuals who did and did not have exposure to the agricultural industry. I gathered thoughts and opinions regarding sustainability, the beef industry, and fast-food restaurants. Then, I showed interviewees a Burger King commercial, which was released in 2020, that addressed cattle methane emissions through a song performed by Mason Ramsey. Following this, I questioned the interviewees about their levels of brand trust and whether or not they were influenced by the message in the commercial. My research was for a class project, and is not a published study; my findings criticized the Burger King commercial for utilizing research that is yet to conclude and has not been peer-reviewed. They are, however, a very brief snapshot of the reality we face in the beef industry every day. My study found that commercials like Burger King’s are able to influence the public’s perception about a particular issue. In this instance,
Burger King targeted the beef industry. Consumers with little-to-no education about methane emissions, the beef industry, or the scientific method would not be able to detect the red flags in the commercial, nor would they be able to decipher an alternative perspective. As identified in the facts stated previously, the majority of consumers know very little about farming or ranching. With social media increasing in demand as a popular news and communications outlet, it has been reported that individuals who rely on it for information are far less likely to get the facts right and are more likely to believe unproven claims. Here, we are presented yet another obstacle in the beef community. If I have learned anything during my extensive studies in agricultural communications and agricultural leadership, it is that no matter the hurdle, you have to be willing to make the jump in order to succeed. What excites me as a young professional in the beef industry is how adaptive we are becoming with our communication tools. I have always been told our best and most powerful weapon is our mind, but I believe that in the beef community, our heart is just as valuable as our mind. And boy, do we have great strength in both. As I have searched for my place in the agricultural industry, I have continuously been drawn back to opportunities in which I can serve the beef community as a storyteller and an advocate. I find my outlet through
writing and the use of social media. The communications tool I have found most effective is knowing how to address and serve a target audience. Too often, the beef community is targeting beef consumers about topics that may or may not influence them. In turn, we are communicating with individuals who already value and trust our industry. Rather, we must learn to better understand our target audience’s perspective. That is the only way we will be able to cater messaging that resonates with the audience. While I may never fully understand the certain food choices an individual may make, I can better serve the beef community by attempting to understand the lifestyle of this individual, the things they value, and the activities they enjoy. Perhaps through this information, I am able to uncover tips for marketing beef products to the prospective consumer. I am a proponent of perspective, and I fully believe that through perspective and openmindedness, the beef community will be better able to educate the public about its products and practices. Ultimately, the first step to the adaptation of public perception is being willing to listen. It is through listening that we learn, and with knowledge, we are better equipped for battle. I, for one, am not willing to allow growth in the beef industry’s knowledge gap. I am a student of opportunity. I am an agricultural advocate. I am a beef producer. Hear me roar. New Technologies in the Beef Industry
by Jorji Ratzlaff, Las Animas, Colorado
Intermediate Division Champion
“A
ny sufficiently advanced technology is equivalent to magic,” Sir Arthur C. Clarke. Clarke knew what he was talking about, but I wonder if he knew technology would serve as magic to the beef industry? Adapting new technologies like embryo transfer, DNA testing, and drones has increased production, safety, and education throughout the beef industry. Reproductive technologies have moved the beef industry forward. Artificial insemination (AI) was used as early as the 1950s. Not long after that, frozen semen revolutionized AI. Beef reproduction has come a long way over the last 70 years. Embryo transfer (ET) and invitro fertilization (IVF) are revolutionizing beef reproduction now. Using ET and IVF can improve herd genetics at a faster rate than AI or natural service. Operations that use ET can increase profits by more than five percent. This is due to increased weaning weights and calf value. IVF allows for the use of sexed semen. Being able to select for calf sex prior to breeding is also benefiting the beef industry. When using IVF, you can use one straw of semen to fertilize multiple eggs rather than using one straw to breed one cow with AI. As time goes on, beef reproductive technologies will continue to improve. DNA testing is another technology that has increased production and education. Farmers and ranchers can learn more about their cattle through DNA. Simple traits such as hair color and horns can be predicted using DNA testing along with complex traits like feed efficiency and carcass quality. Parent verification is also done by using DNA. While this technology is widely used by registered seedstock producers, it is available to all beef producers. The collection of DNA can be done three ways; blood sample, hair sample, or tissue sample. DNA testing makes other technologies possible such as genomic EPDs. The use of DNA is going to continue to impact the beef industry. Drones are a great example of how the beef industry has adapted new technology. Producers and feedlot managers are using drones to help manage their operations. Drones can do basic jobs
48 | AUGUST 2021
easier and faster than humans can. Checking fences, water tanks, gates, and pastures a few of the jobs that can be easily accomplished with a drone rather than by a human. In many parts of the country where parts of pastures are not accessible by vehicle or horseback, drones are used to locate and check on cattle. Recently, ranchers have been using drones to herd cattle. It has been found that cattle move away from the sound of a drone as it hovers over the herd. Stray cattle can also be brought back to the herd using a drone. Jobs that typically take more than one person to complete on foot or horseback can now be completed by one person operating a drone. Drones help cut back on the time and labor used on farms and ranches. Through the use of technology and research, producers have created Beef Quality Assurance (BQA). BQA helps ensure cattle cared for using best management practices. Producers who are BQA certified, produce safe and wholesome beef products. Following BQA guidelines also means producers are working in the safest ways on their operation. This program is voluntary further proving to consumers that cattle producers are committed to raising beef safely, humanely, and sustainably. Over 85% of the beef raised in the United States is raised by BQA certified farmers and ranchers. Without the technology and research used to create BQA guidelines, best management practices would not be what they are today leaving both beef products and production practices less safe. As producers, we know that education is important now more than ever. Technology is making it easier for us to educate the general public about our industry and educate ourselves. By using social media, we can share photos, videos, and other media with anyone and everyone. Social media is a technology that can be misused and cause more harm than good. Sharing facts and information with those that are misinformed or uninformed will safeguard our image with consumers. Producers can also take advantage of different informative webinars and conferences virtually thanks to
technology. You can connect with industry leaders from the comfort of your home. It is important that producers stay educated and educate others on the importance of the beef industry. It is clear, technology is magic for the beef industry. Taking advantage of technologies such as embryo transfer, DNA testing, and drones has moved our industry forward. Adapting new technologies increases production, safety, and education within the beef industry. My Favorite Farm Experience by Mallory Mahoney, Robertsdale, Alabama
Junior Division Champion
A
year ago, my parents, brother, sister and I moved out to the family farm. On the farm, we raise Gelbvieh and Balancer cattle. It is hard to think of just one favorite farm experience when I have thousands. My favorite farm experience happened to me just a few days ago. The day started out like any other day. It was a bright, sunny afternoon. I had gotten home from school and finished my homework and went outside to play. While I was outside playing, my cousin Bailey ran up to me and shouted, “Mallory, I think one of your cows is giving birth!” I felt so excited, but nervous and knew I wanted to see it be born. I was going to ride my bike down to the pasture but knew it would take too long to get through all the gates, so I decided to run as fast as
I could to where my Pawpaw was sitting. My Pawpaw was sitting in the ranger. He signaled me to be quiet as I got close to him and the momma cow. I could see the momma cow standing up and sitting down and then standing up again. I could tell she was having a baby. I climbed up the gate to get a better view, when suddenly, the momma cow stood up and there was a black slimy blob on the ground. I yelled, “Pawpaw, I think she had her baby!” Sure enough she had her baby. We went to check on them and I was so excited to find out it was a baby girl. This was my favorite farm experience. I was so excited to see my first baby cow be born and get to tell everyone about it. I cannot wait to make more farm memories as I get older. F GELBVIEH WORLD |

about the Gelbvieh breed and helping them with their livestock projects. He loved watching his kids exhibit cattle, but he always wanted them to understand the skills needed outside the show ring to breed quality cattle. Showing cattle takes a great deal of skill, but competing in the bred and owned division takes that skill to a much higher level. It is for that reason the bred and owned show was always one of his favorites.
“At my first classic in Springfield, Missouri, I learned that this association is not just about showing cattle; it is about growing youth to sustain and grow Gelbvieh/ Balancer® genetics,” Strackeljahn says. “I learned that the AGJA is one big family. I want to improve my leadership skills and serve this great association.” The AGJA created the ambassador program to encourage and support youth development in the breed’s activities. The ambassador will represent the AGJA at Gelbvieh functions throughout the year, including shows at the local, regional, state and national levels. We wish Kate luck in her role as the 2021-2022 AGJA Ambassador! F

Find Your Future in Agriculture by Laura Handke
W
hat do you think of when you hear the words: careers in agriculture? Do you think of technology and science? Do you think about growing the crops and livestock needed to feed 7.3 billion people? Do you think of your future? We, and the rest of the world’s growing population, sure hope so.
There has never been a better time to pursue a career in agriculture. And, as we learned from a recent conversation with Bonnie Johnson, AgCareers.com marketing and communication manager, there is no shortage of opportunities, no matter where your interests lie. “Careers in agriculture are growing to match the food needs of the growing global population,” Johnson shares. “Right now, we have more than 3,000 active jobs on our site, and we typically see more than 45,000 jobs posted on the site in a year.” Johnson says that employers surveyed by AgCareers. com said that their greatest need was for employees with a bachelor’s degree, with 81% of employers seeking that credential, followed by positions requiring an associate degree or certification and high school diploma. Agriculture, and the career pathway opportunities the sector provides, is more than an on-farm endeavor—a
stigma the industry has worked to overcome amongst high school and college students. “While the top need we see listed on AgCareers.com continues to be sales and retail, followed by farm and ranch operations, there is a strong number of specialists, researchers, marketing and branding, and business development careers listed. We are seeing a growth trend in ag technology and precision agriculture,” Johnson says. “And it takes engineers, software developers, IT specialists and risk management professionals to make those technologies reality.” The National FFA Organization agrees, citing their 2020 list of emerging and growing careers in agriculture; a list that almost exclusively highlights science and technology. Drone Technologists Hydrologists Agriculture Communicators Precision Agriculture Technologists As cattle producers, junior showman and agriculturalists, think outside the box and don’t be afraid to explore what agriculture has to offer. The sky is the limit and it will take us all to feed a growing population. F
