We have all experienced quite a time in the cattle business this past year! We are excited about the BEEF BUSINESS and hope to see you at our 20th Annual – Cattlemen’s Choice Bull Sale.

EPD’s - What do the Numbers Mean:

In 2012 the Gelbvieh, Balancer, Red Angus, Simmental put their EPD’s into the same system and calculated the new EPD’s. Now you will be able to compare these 3 breeds on the same EPD base. In other words you can compare the same EPD’s for Gelbvieh, Red Angus, Balancer and Simmental cattle. The Angus breed continues to do their own EPD’s – so the Angus bulls cannot be compared across breeds. Below is a brief explanation of the EPD’s: CED: CED is shown in all breeds. CED stands for Calving Ease Direct. This EPD represents a ratio that determines how easy calves are born. The higher the number – should represent easier calving. BW: This EPD is used by all breeds. It predicts the difference in pounds for birth weight. Look at the breed average and compare. WW: This EPD is used by all breeds. It predicts the difference in pounds for weaning weight. Look at the breed average and compare. The WW EPD is an indicator of growth from birth to weaning. YW: This EPD is used by all breeds. It predicts the difference in pounds for yearling weight around 365 days of age. Look at the breed average and compare. The YW EPD is an indicator of growth from birth to yearling. Milk-MK: This EPD predicts the genetic ability of a sire’s daughter to produce milk. The higher number means more milk. Marb-MB: This EPD predicts the genetic ability of a sire’s offspring to grade. This EPD along with ultrasound data predicts which genetics have a higher chance of grading Choice, Prime and etc.. REA-RE: This EPD predicts the genetic ability of a sire’s offspring Loin Eye Area. This EPD along with ultrasound data predicts Loin Eye Area which determines Yield Grade – Red Meat. FPI-$B: This EPD predicts the carcass value and performance of a sire. The EPD’s are expressed in a $ value. The FPI dollar value is based on Performance, Carcass Weight, Marbling, Ribeye. The $B value is based on performance, carcass weight, Marbling, and production costs. Ultrasound Information All the bulls will be weighed and measured for frame size, Ribeye area, marbling, fat thickness, and scrotal size. The bulls will also be fertility tested and will also be test free of BVD. We will post the information on our website – as soon as we receive the information. As we slowly emerge out of the drought, it became evident in 2014 that our genetics continue to improve each and every year. When Mother Nature cooperates it is amazing to see how our genetics can perform, while maintaining moderate birth weights! One thing has become clear in the drought years over the past 3-5 years, FERTILY is still the #1 trait to profits and those that cannot get bred have made their way to the sale barn. You will notice we are offering more bulls that are higher % Gelbvieh. The reason for this is due to our continued focus of adding FERTILITY to our cowherd and hopefully your cowherd. The 50% to PB Gelbvieh cattle – get bred – even in the tough times of drought. We see commercial cattlemen realize the power of CROSSBREEDING and the need to add HYBRID VIGOR to their cowherd. Nothing beats a good Balancer feeder calf or cow! I continue to be amazed that today we can have calves born 70-80# at birth and wean 600-700# calves and have these calves ready to slaughter at 1214 months of age! We are big believers in the use of EPD’s. EPD’s are 10 times more accurate than actual weights and reflect the power of genetics in numerous environments throughout the US. We also are big believers in the use of A.I. in our own cowherd. We feel rapid improvement of genetics is possible by using some of the best sires in the US through A.I. We have concentrated on producing bulls that are Practical, Predictable and Proven in their genetics. We take great pride in watching our bull customers top feeder cattle sales, report grid premiums and talk about their “improved” cowherd and females. We want to help you find the genetics you need for your cowherd, so don’t hesitate to tell us what traits you’re looking for to improve your bottom line. Back by popular demand is DV Auction. CUSTOMER SERVICE & SATISFACTION SIGHT-UNSEEN GUARANTEE If you are unable to make the sale, we are offering a sight – unseen purchase program. We also will be broadcasting the sale on DV Auction to allow you to see a video of the bulls/heifers selling. We also have arranged a “different” set of eyes and person to talk to- if you would like another opinion on the cattle. Andy Jones will view the bulls/heifers and give you his honest opinion. Andy’s number is 785-769-4319. BULL CARE This year we are again offering to keep your bulls until April 1st of 2015. We will take your bull home and feed them for $2/per head/per day. As of April 1st we will work with you on delivery or you can come to the ranch and pick-up your bull. Buyer does assume risk of the bull after sale day for injury and/or death. We can provide buyers insurance sale day that will cover the bull for injury or death until breeding season is complete. If you have a problem with an injured bull – please contact us- typically we carry-over a few bulls and can provide you with a replacement bull for the breeding season. GUARANTEES All bulls selling for $2750 or more are guaranteed against breeding season injury for the first breeding season. A breeding season is defined as a 90 day period following the first turn out date of the bull. This is not an insurance policy. If a bull develops a problem, proper treatment or vet care is advisable. If a replacement bull is available, he will be provided. If the buyer prefers no replacement bull, we will provide credit towards another bull in the following year, less the salvage value of the injured bull. A nice balanced, deep ribbed , long bodied bull out of the calving ease ABS sire Safeguard. Safeguard calved easy here, the calves grew well and we expect good results on carcass ultrasound. 2003B ranks in the top 15% of the breed for WW and YW. Raised by a 1st calf heifer and weaned at 719#’s.

Here is a sure shot – heifer bull – that has a really neat look. 2002B is a very nice balanced bull with a lot of muscle shape.
