PRESIDENT’S VIEW
The Staircase changes have occurred. But with changes come new opportunities and areas that can be added to the strategic plan to build the staircase. While this is occurring, we must maintain our focus on what has been accomplished. For if we fail to maintain and grow what has been done, we will fall back and lose a step in the staircase thereby clouding our vision.
In my last article I wrote about being focused. With focus towards our goals we can build our “staircase of vision.” I feel it is necessary for me to expand on my thoughts a little more. By Neal Pearson
AS THIS PERTAINS to being focused, I have to go back

Another benefit will be the value of the genetic data that is acquired. We know the value to the association; it could also be of significant value to How many of us do at least the Genomics Option other affiliated industries. We could also see a positive 2 that includes parentage on our sale bulls? Lets take gain from commercial cattlemen, thereby adding this scenario a little further. A rancher buys some economic value to our product. This program ties Gelbvieh bulls; some have a genomic and parentage right into our strategic plan of being the maternal breed of choice. information and the others nothing. Now he turns these bulls out into a multiple-sire pasture. Later he decides to profile a set of replacement heifers for sale. The profile does not require known sires but if available, the data then has more genetic predictability and we hope more economic value. One of the keys to making this program unique is the use of parentage markers on all Gelbvieh bulls sold. The benefits of this I see as being extremely important to the program. Now I’m not suggesting that we make this mandatory, but has a service to one’s customers, it is something to consider. I got off on a tangent here, but feel it is important. Now back to the commercial vision. We need to realize up front that there are a lot of pieces that have to come together for this to become a reality. But imagine what a large inventory of commercial cattle could mean to the association. Not only does it bring in additional revenue, it can also lead to an increase in new members, herd assessments and financial solvency.

I have used our registry system and the commercial cowherd as examples of what can be used to build our staircase of vision. As we move forward, other possibilities may arise. Some could be related, while others will have no connection. It’s important that we have an open mind when looking ahead, not just to next year, but longer-term. FFF

EXECUTIVE’S VIEW
Deliver More Than Just a Bull Bull sale season is in full swing and American Gelbvieh Association (AGA) members marketing Gelbvieh and Balancer® genetics are having a great year.
MORE OFTEN THAN not, following a bull sale this year, AGA staff hears the words, “That was the best sale we have ever had.”
The beef industry continues to realize the benefits of utilizing Gelbvieh genetics in breeding programs on their respective ranches. Perhaps the market signals are appropriately aligned for producers to build cowherds with genetics that focus on maternal strengths. Fortunately for AGA members, the backbone of Gelbvieh is the positive influence Gelbvieh and Balancer have on cowherd building traits, like calving ease, fertility and longevity. The tools and services provided by the AGA to the membership validates the strengths and benefits delivered with the purchase of a Gelbvieh or Balancer bull. Once the excitement of the bull sale has passed and the bulls have been delivered to the respective buyers there is still one step that remains. The transfer of those bulls to the commercial cattlemen who have entrusted Gelbvieh with the genetic well-being of their ranches and farms. The genetic information provided to customers as they inventory bull batteries will continue to assist them in making mating decisions. Customers will then be able to reflect on the sires they have used in their programs recently and futuristically will guide them with the road map they will need going forward by providing them the most current information available. No question, the use of genetic information is becoming more prevalent as it comes time for ranchers to market their cattle as well. Possessing the current 10 | APRIL 2015
EPDs and indexes on each producer’s bull battery will enable them to highlight the strengths of their own cowherds and attract buyers seeking cattle raised by producers with aggressive genetic programs and a focus the needs of the modern beef industry. The marketing staff at the AGA will emphasize assisting commercial bull customers in not only making breeding decisions but marketing cattle as well. Gelbvieh and Balancer stakeholders will begin to realize the benefit of connecting with the beef industry and potential feeder cattle and prospective females buyers, through the AGA staff. Transferring ownership of bulls purchased through your sale is the first step in providing high-level service to commercial bull customers through the AGA. Transfer of ownership to commercial bull customers is free of charge. When buyers provide complete contact information and become partners with AGA marketing staff in making registered breeders and commercial producers stakeholders in Gelbvieh and Balancer genetics. NEWS ‘N NOTES Data Due April 30 to be Included in Summer EPD Run Any data that breeders want to be included in the Summer 2015 Sire Summary and National Cattle Evaluation EPD run should be submitted by April 30, 2015. Data submitted after April 30 will not be guaranteed to be included in the summer run. Breeders are encouraged to submit any an all data available. It is important for members to recognize that submitting data sooner than later is preferred. For example, Spring-born 2015 calves can have birth data submitted, which helps enhance the accuracy of birth related EPDs for both the sire and dam. Data can be submitted as the data is collected and all data does not have to be entered all at once. Also consider submitting 2014 Fall-born weaning data, etc. Have questions? Simply call the AGA office at 303-4652333.
Send us the Sale Report The AGA would like to feature your sale report in the Gelbvieh World publication and on www.gelbvieh. org in the Sale Reports listing under the Exchange tab on the AGA Homepage. Please send sale reports to Rebecca Mettler at rebeccam@gelbvieh.org.
Sponsors Needed for AGJA Heart Of It All Classic The 2015 American Gelbvieh Junior Association Heart Of It All Classic is sure to be another fun and exciting show. AGJA members from across the country are making plans to travel Springfield, Ohio June 28 through July 3 for this event full of fun, competition and promotion of the Gelbvieh breed. If you would like to support AGJA in 2015, please select a sponsorship level and return the AGJA Barnyard Classic Sponsor Form, found on page 33, to the AGA office. You can also reserve your sponsorship by simply emailing carriet@gelbvieh.org or by calling 270-404-0828.
New DNA Testing Requirements for Natural Service Sires of 2016 Born Calves According to a new rule passed by the AGA Board of Directors in August 2014, all pasture sires used in the 2015 breeding season are now required to have a Genomic Option #2 (GGP-LD) test and the associated Genomic Enhanced EPDs (GE-EPDs) in order for their 2016 born calves to be recorded in the AGA Herdbook. Start planning ahead and DNA testing your bulls now so that recording 2016 calves will not be held up by this requirement. Refer to the View of the Numbers article in the March 2015 Gelbvieh World for an in-depth look at the requirements.

BREED PROMOTION MINUTE
A Brief Look at Bull Sale Season as it Progresses As I travel to bull sales all across the country it is exciting to see the over whelming acceptance of Gelbvieh and Balancer® genetics. Many seedstock producers have seen increases in their average of more than $1,500 over last year’s sales. As I study the sale averages, sale topping bulls and the remainder of the sale offering, it became clear what the commercial producer sees as valuable. By William McIntosh DATA HAS NEVER been studied harder that it has been this bull sale season. Producers want as much information as they can get to help them make their selection decisions. Calving ease is a huge factor in determining value. In the past several years we have seen a consolidation in the U.S. cowherd. Just as row crop production, we see fewer cattlemen running more cows. Since 1977 we have lost 750,000 cattle producers. All the indicators point to this trend continuing. With fewer people to calve the cowherd, calving ease becomes very valuable. Also we see a lot of cattle producers that have off-thefarm jobs and are not able to give their calving cows the attention required. Low birth weight, high calving ease bulls have sold at a premium all across the country this year. I expect that trend to continue for decades to come. Growth is, has, and will continue to be one of the largest profit drivers in the beef industry. As long as cattle are sold by the pound, this will never change! Pounds per head are what make the loan payments. Bulls that rank toward the top of the breed for weaning and yearling weight were easy to sell this spring if they were acceptable from a calving ease standpoint. Carcass value traits were many times the difference between good and great. The true “breeder bull” had to have exceptional carcass quality. There were a lot of good bulls that had calving ease and decent performance but fell short in marbling or ribeye area. Seedstock producers recognize the importance of
14 | APRIL 2015
continuing to improve carcass traits in the nation’s cowherd. We are all in the beef business and we must never forget the end product and consumer satisfaction.
Customer service will always play a role in profitability. The seedstock programs that have great customer service have been rewarded. Buyers are loyal to producers that build a relationship with them and that quickly fix any problems that may arise. Phenotype and structure will always play a role in the customers buying decision. There’s no getting around it if a bull doesn’t look the part and isn’t structurally sound, he will be a tough sale. The bulls that combine calving ease, exceptional performance, carcass traits and phenotype have sold for record prices. Gelbvieh and Balancer breeders have worked hard to breed cattle that will improve the entire beef industry. AGA members have reduced birth weight and at the same time increased weaning and yearling weights, two highly antagonistic traits. They have also improved carcass traits, which has been the focus of the AGA’s Strategic Plan set forth three years ago; and it’s working. As I travel the country I get reports of feeder closeouts of Balancer sired calves grading over 90 percent Choice. This spring as you make your breeding decisions keep in mind what your customers see as valuable and will pay a premium for. Your job as a seedstock breeder is to provide commercial producers genetics that they see value in and that will move the entire industry forward. FFF

2015 Beef Cow Synchronization Protocols The Beef Reproduction Task Force composed of representatives of the AI and pharmaceutical companies, veterinarians and reproduction specialists have developed based on research data and field use a list of recommended synchronization protocols for use in cows in 2015. By Robin Salverson, SDSU Extension Cow/Calf Field Specialist THE PROTOCOLS CAN be found in the AI catalogs and on the Beef Reproduction Task Force website (http://beefrepro.unl.edu).
Recommended Protocols & Useful Tools Take note that not all protocols are for both cows and heifers. There is a difference in physiological response between heifers and cows. It is important that you use a cow protocol. Likewise, follow the protocol, give the proper hormone injection or insert at the right time and don’t expect to jump-start all cows that are not cycling. To help increase the success of the synchronization protocol cows need to be at a body condition score of 5 or better during breeding season and be at least 50 days post calving. If there are young, thin and or late calving cows in the herd, it is likely they are not cycling. The addition of a progestin such as CIDR® in the protocol can help jump-start some of these non-cycling cows. However, caution needs to be taken, CIDR® or other progestins are not the “cure all” for thin, young and late calving cows. Consideration needs to be taken whether it is cost effective to synchronize these cows. An evaluation of the nutrition program is recommended if a high percentage of cows are not cycling.
the injection in the rump does not increase the efficacy or speed of the hormone because it was administered “closer to the ovary”. All drugs must enter the blood system and travel to the heart and lungs before reaching the target organ (i.e. ovaries). When handling all hormones including CIDR® wear latex or non-latex gloves regardless if you are a man or a woman. Example, prostaglandin is a smooth muscle contractor, our intestines are the largest smooth muscle in the human body. If prostaglandin is absorbed through the skin it can “tie up” the digestive system. Additionally, the hormones function in the human body like it does in a heifer therefore, extreme care should be taken when handling all synchronization hormones.
Protocol Categories The recommended cow estrous synchronization protocols have been put into one of three categories: Heat Detection Protocol Heat Detection and Timed AI Protocol Fixed Time AI Protocol 1. Heat Detection Protocols: Cows in these protocols should be inseminated 6 to 12 hours after the first observation of standing heat. During peak heat activity which is approximately 48 to 72 hours after prostaglandin; heat detection should occur at a minimum of 3 times per day for at least 1 hour per check for a total of 3 hours with 5 to 6 hours of heat detection being better. Refer to the SDSU Extension publication Detection of Standing Estrus In Cattle for more information on detecting heat. The heat detection protocols for cows include:

It is tempting to give a cow an injection in the rump, because there is the belief that cull cows solely end as hamburger beef. However, a majority of the “middle meats” such as ribeye rolls, short-loins, strip-loins, along with round are marketed as such. Therefore, Beef Quality Assurance guidelines should be followed when giving all injectable hormones. Secondly, giving

heat. After approximately 3 days of heat detection, all cows not showing heat after PG injection will be given an injection of GnRH and inseminated (i.e. timed insemination). The amount of time spent on heat detection is reduced and early responders have a better chance of conceiving compared to a single fixed-time AI. Fixed-Time AI protocols include: 7-day CO-Synch + CIDR® 5-day CO-Synch + CIDR® PG 5 –day CO-Synch + CIDR® (For Bos Indicus cows only) Using the Estrus Synchronization Planner can help you develop you compare synchronization protocols and develop a synchronization and breeding calendar for both cows and heifers. REGISTRY TIPS N TRICKS
Checklist for Qualifying an AI Sire Much of the genetic progress made in a herd per generation is credited to the bull. In fact, three-fourths of a calf’s projected genetic make-up can be attributed to the sire and maternal grandsire. By Kelli Retallick Further genetic progress can be made by using elite sires through use of artificial insemination (AI). Because AI sires are more widely used on a national scale in comparison to natural service sires, it is important to promote high quality standards for these animals. The American Gelbvieh Association (AGA) implemented a set of regulations in 2013 to be followed in order for an AI permit to be issued and calves descending from the sire to be registered. The following simple five-step checklist must be completed in order for a sire to become AI qualified as recognized by the AGA. 1.) Submit a DNA sample for testing with the Genomic Option #1. All AI sires must have a highdensity genotype on file with the AGA in order for progeny to be registered. (See The View of the Numbers article in this month’s issue to better understand DNA testing for AI sires) 2,) Complete parentage verification against both the sire and dam. If parentage markers on the sire or dam are not currently on file with the AGA, additional DNA tests on these animals will be required for the applicable parent at the expense of the applicant/owner of the pending AI sire. 3.) Request genetic condition tests for all currently monitored status defects including AM, NH, OS and DD. 4.) Fill out an AI Permit Application. This application is to be filled out by the owner(s) of the AI sire in question. Once items 1-3 are complete an AI permit will be finalized. A copy of the permit and a receipt of the application will be mailed to the address 18 | APRIL 2015
indicated on the application form. Contact the AGA office, 303-465-2333, to acquire an application or print the application at www. gelbvieh.org/education/forms/aipermitform. html and return to the AGA Office electronically or by mail at 10900 Dover Street, Westminster, CO 80021.
5.) Pay AI permit fee. A one-time $50 fee will be charged as indicated on the AI Permit Application. If calves are recorded prior to obtaining an AI permit, a $100 fee will be charged for the AI permit. After completing these five simple steps a sire is considered AI Qualified and anyone using the distributed semen can then register progeny. The optimal time to complete this process is before semen is distributed for breeding purposes. Progeny of AI sires cannot be registered through the AGA Registry Service until an AI permit has been issued. One should allow a minimum of four weeks for the entire AI sire qualifying process to be complete. If a NONAMGV sire is used for AI purposes, this sire must be AI qualified in their native registry (i.e. Angus, Red Angus, Hereford, Simmental, etc.). The AGA does not require any additional testing of these sires if qualified by their respective registry. If you continue to have questions about AI qualifying sires, please contact Kelli Retallick, kellir@gelbvieh.org, or Kari White, kario@gelbvieh.org. FFF

CattleFax Annual Outlook at 2015 Cattle Industry Convention Many factors are at play when setting a forecast for the beef industry. The weather, inputs, domestic and import/export markets, the overall economy and supply and demand are just a few major aspects that must be considered. By Rebecca Mettler THE TEAM AT CattleFax presented their annual beef industry outlook presentation at the Cattle Industry Convention and NCBA Trade Show in February in San Antonio, Texas. Five industry experts navigated through market history as well as the challenges and the opportunities for the beef industry for years to come.
Feed Grain and Energy Outlook
prices found in 2014 where demand has overtaken supply. The real question is will we catch up and when.”
As demand for beef has outstepped supply, he predicts for the foreseeable future we will be chasing supply. Eventually supply will catch up with global demand but it will take some time. In the meantime, Stuart expects consumers around the world to continue to pay over and above the price of beef on the global market for U.S. grain-fed beef. “The last three years we have seen a significant promotion in this market for grain-fed beef. This is something that we have promoted in the industry and it’s just started to manifest itself in the global market,” Stuart said.
Mike Murphy, CattleFax market analyst, explained that in 2014 much of the United States showed ideal weather conditions, which resulted in the record corn yields. However the last 40 years would tell us that we won’t see back-to-back years of record yields.
Weather Outlook
Domestically 2010-2012 offered tighter supplies that have now eased up with the building back of grain supplies, thus price also went down. From a global perspective supplies won’t be as tight as they were in the last several years either.
As anyone in the cattle industry knows, weather plays a huge part in how profitable a cattle operation is. Just ask the Southwest United States, particularly California, as that portion of the country deals with a continuing drought situation.
“We go into an environment where we see more stabilization from a demand perspective that will also help the environment from a price perspective,” Murphy said. Murphy suggests that the corn prices going into the spring will trade from $3.50 to $4.25. He also pointed out that it’s important for producers to understand that more volatility could be placed in that market if a wet spring occurs because there’s the potential to lose even more acres than are already being lost. “We don’t expect that volatility to have any sort of significant impact from the prices that we are forecasting but certainly recognize that the volatility is going to exist,” Murphy said. CattleFax predicts the annual average price of corn to be $3.60/bushel. Crude oil is expected to range from $40 to $70 per barrel.
Global Trade Outlook “Look at the record prices. These weren’t just an U.S. issue, they were a global phenomenon,” said Brett Stuart, CattleFax consultant- global market specialist regarding cattle prices. “The global market that supported the level of 20 | APRIL 2015
As for demand, the key driver is per capita income. As Stuart looks at the numbers he believes that the correlations fit very nicely with U.S. beef exports.
Dr. Art Douglas, , professor emeritus at Creighton University, expects to see cooler conditions in the Southwest with improved precipitation. In the Upper Midwest he expects to see cooler temperatures develop along with dryer conditions developing. “It’s a mixed bag on this forecast,” Douglas said. “The Southern tier of the United States it’s a good forecast and improved precipitation all the way from California to Georgia, but may be dryer conditions in the Upper Midwest.”
Beef Supply and Demand Outlook “We need to realize how dramatic last year’s change in production was. Total cattle slaughter last year was down 2.25 million head. To put in perspective that’s 9,000 head per day,” said Kevin Good, CattleFax senior analyst. Heifer slaughter was down eight percent and as a percentage of fed slaughter, which was the lowest percentage since 1994, according to Good. “Expect that with the prices we’ve seen in the cow/calf sector and the weather forecast, we will most likely keep heifers back in 2015 and 2016, which will tend to keep
supplies in the feedyard stymied,” Good said.
absolute high in this cattle cycle is behind us.
Even though the slightly larger cowherd kept from 2014 will produce a larger calf crop in 2015, slaughter numbers and production forecast for 2015 show a small decline in fed slaughter. But there are possibilities to improve that.
“Not that this year is going to be a disaster, we think prices will still be very strong, we just need to recognize that we have a trend change because of the bigger beef supply in the future and bigger meat supply today and the challenges of exports and strength of the dollar,” Good added.
“Theoretically we could have a year over year increase in cattle slaughter production as we go into the second half of this year. The tightest supplies are in the second half of last year and the first half of this year,” Good said. The combination of an expanded cowherd and added weight to feedyard cattle would suggest that the industry could see substantial beef production increases in 2016 to 2017. “Demand as a whole was robust in 2014 and as we think about 2015 we do have some concerns,” Good said. From a historical standpoint the price point between beef and pork has gone together but we are seeing beef stay strong but pork has backed down substantially. From the broiler side, the spread between the prices has been getting wider over time, according to Good. Later Good cautioned producers that the cattle market in 2015 could be an underperformer. He said that the

Industry Wide Overview “We’ve had a pretty good run, now do any of us expect to stay at those levels? The perfect storm allowed that to happen,” said Randy Blach, CattleFax CEO. From the forth quarter of 2013 to the forth quarter of 2014 we have seen a 22 to 23 percent increase in retail prices. Is it any surprise that we are seeing some push back? Beef consumption has dropped 11 pounds from where we were in earlier decades to where 2014 stood. Blach cautioned the entire industry to manage risk. “The volatility of these markets to move 20 to 22 percent from annual highs to annual lows, year in and year out. What does that mean from a dollars per head standpoint, focus on managing risk,” Blach said. FFF

Beef herd expansion appears to be underway USDA released their annual cattle inventory estimates in late January. This report was especially significant this year as many were looking for confirmation that beef herd expansion had begun. By Dr. Kenny Burdine, University of Kentucky OVERALL, THE REPORT indicated that expansion was underway, and perhaps at a faster pace than many expected. Also, the report confirmed that the cow herd was larger coming into 2015, likely as a result of decreased cow slaughter during 2014. Total cattle and calves were estimated up by about 1% from 2014. Estimates are shown in the table at the end of this article and include both 2014 and 2015.
increase in heifer retention last year was partially in response to deceasing cow numbers. Conversely, the heifer retention seen this year occurred when total beef cow numbers had actually increased. To put this 4% in perspective, it amounts to an additional 226,000 more heifers being held for beef cow replacements. As a percentage of the 29.7 million US beef cow herd, this would be slightly less than 1%. Heifer development estimates for July will also be of importance as we start thinking about how quickly this cow-herd will grow. Of course, so will weather conditions in the coming years and how well the calf market holds as production starts to increase and the beef market sees increased pressure from competing meats.
While this report confirms that beef cow herd The number that will likely have the most immediate expansion is underway, many of the fundamentals impact on beef producers is the estimated size of the remain positive for the beef sector in 2015. I fully expect beef cow herd. The January 2015 estimate was just under calf prices to respond positively to grass this spring and 29.7 million, which was an increase of a little more than think we are likely to see the strongest spring calf market 2% from 2014. Sizeable increases were seen in Texas, that we have seen. While I do look for fall calf prices Oklahoma and Kansas. Increases in herd size in the to be softer in fall 2015, I also fully expect the fall 2015 southeast were more moderate for the most part. Cow market to another strong one, second only to the fall of slaughter had been running well below year ago levels 2014. Cow-calf operators should take advantage of the for virtually all of 2014 and I think this was the primary increased income they enjoyed in 2014 and are likely to driver of the increase in cow numbers. Deep culling enjoy in 2015 to get their beef herds where they want in much of the US during 2011-2013 resulted in beef them to be in the next few years. VIEW OF THE NUMBERS
DNA testing on A.I. sires: Why is it necessary? Incorporating artificial insemination (AI) into a breeding program is an excellent way to focus in genetic improvement in the herd. AI decreases the generation interval, as well as increases selection intensity, both of which speed the rate of progress. By Kari White AMERICAN GELBVIEH ASSOCIATION (AGA) guidelines
require all bulls that are to be used as AI sires to have high density genomic testing, parent verification, and genetic condition testing before progeny can be registered. Several benefits come from this type of DNA testing in highly used sires. Animals tested with genomic option #1 return expected progeny differences (EPDs) with genomic enhanced accuracies, which allow for less risk in choosing a sire because EPDs with greater accuracies are less likely to change over time. Also, greater numbers of animals with high density genomic tests help make the equations used to predict GenomicEnhanced EPDs (GE-EPDs) more accurate. Testing for known genetic conditions is also important for AI sires. The AGA allows the registration of animals that are known carriers of defects, and even allows them to be qualified as AI sires. It is recommended, however, that animals used frequently in the herd are tested for genetic conditions so matings between carriers can be avoided. This strategy of preventative breeding can keep deleterious traits from creating numerous affected animals in the herd. DNA tests for potential A.I sires can be ordered through your member page in the AGA Registry system. Contact the office if you would like to request an AI permit on a bull with all the required testing. For more information on DNA testing or qualifying an animal as an AI sire, go to www.gelbvieh.org or call the office at 303-465-2333. FFF
24 | APRIL 2015
Frequently Asked Questions: Can a bull be an AI sire if he is a carrier of a genetic condition? Yes, the AGA only requires that all potential AI sires be tested for all monitored genetic condition. Do I need to test for the CA genetic condition? As of right now (April 2015), there is no viable CA test for Gelbvieh influenced cattle. Until a test is commercially available, CA will not be a required test for potential A.I. sires. How do I get an AI permit for a bull that has all the necessary tests? To obtain an AI permit, contact the AGA office with your member number and the registration number of the animal. An AI permit will be issued on the date of the call. What does parent verification mean? AI sires need to be tested to both their sire and the dam to ensure their pedigree is correct. This ensures the EPDs of the AI sire and their progeny are the most correct calculations possible.

BIF to Meet June 9-12 in Biloxi BILOXI, Mississippi - The 2015 Beef Improvement Federation (BIF) Annual Meeting and Research Symposium will be June 9-12 at the Beau Rivage Hotel and Conference Center in Biloxi, Mississippi. The theme for this year’s program is “Rebuilding a Cowherd.” CO-HOSTED BY THE Mississippi State University
Extension Service and the Mississippi Beef Cattle Improvement Association, the event will start at noon June 9 with registration. The meeting will allow the research community and industry to meet and discuss issues surrounding the genetic improvement of beef cattle and for attendees to learn about technologies and management practices that can aid in the profitability of their operations. Some of the topics to be covered include setting the stage for cowherd rebuilding, what sustainability means and why it matters, what sustainability data say about the beef industry, how current market incentives affect genetic selection, profitability: looking to an operation’s
future, balancing novel and proven applications for female selection, cow lifetime productivity, and an adaptability panel discussion.
A link to online registration for the conference is now available at http:// beefimprovement.org/library/registration-info. Early registration is offered at a discounted rate and ends April 15. Early registration cost to attend the full conference is $250. Day-only, student and media discount rates also are available. Members and customers will be directed to the appropriate staff member to answer questions and provide assistance. Those specific staff members will answer questions regarding member accounts, use of the new online registry service, membership information and guidance in animal breeding and the data attached to Gelbvieh influenced cattle. The membership is encouraged to become reacquainted with staff that has served AGA members for more than 20 years and meet the new faces at the AGA. COMMUNICATION NOTE
Let Gelbvieh Media Productions Take Care of You sale catalog page can be one of the most highly visited pages on the entire AGA website during sale season. It’s an easy way to advertise for your sale and is available for free to any breeder who places a display ad in the Gelbvieh World or The Profit Picture. Another great place to display sale information is on the AGA’s Places to Be page. It’s the easiest way to keep up with everything Gelbvieh.
Sale day preparations are one of the busiest times of the year for most seedstock producers. By Rebecca Mettler OBVIOUSLY, AT THIS point most of the preparations for the spring 2015 sale season have passed. However, it’s never too early to start thinking about next year. Think about what do you plan to change for the next go-around. What preparations do you need to make sooner next year and how can you more easily spread the word about your upcoming sale. These are all very logical thoughts and it’s always important to continue to progress in your operation from a marketing standpoint.
Don’t forget to take advantage of the Gelbvieh World and The Profit Picture. The Gelbvieh World publication reaches all American Gelbvieh Association (AGA) members and commercial producers who have bought Gelbvieh and Balancer® animals within the past year. The February and October issues of The Profit Picture go out to a whopping 40,000 beef producers with a majority categorized as commercial producers. Simply placing an ad in those two publications could get you your next new customer. Also, did you post your sale catalog on the AGA’s website under the Exchange heading? The 30 | APRIL 2015
And finally one more question, did you use the AGA and Gelbvieh Media Productions (GMP) to it’s best potential. GMP can service all of your marketing and design needs, including print advertising, email marketing, brochures, catalogs, logos and business card as well as post cards. FFF

JUNIOR VOICE
Membership Pays Have you ever stopped to think about all the American Gelbvieh Association (AGA) has to offer? By Tiana Garcia Aside from the wonderful cattle and great people in our association there are so many other benefits to being a member both as an adult and junior member. It’s sometimes easy to forget all of the resources that are offered to current members. Why not take advantage of the resources and programs made possible by our association? Up-to-date programs and research are constantly offered to association members. The new registry service provides countless tools to make registering, record keeping, decision making, and marketing easier for breeders. Genomic-Enhanced EPDs (GE-EPDs), thanks to research and new technology, help us to better rank our cattle and to continue improving our breed. This is done through DNA testing which is offered by the AGA. The DNA tests can also be beneficial to cattlemen to improve their herds. Other programs such as Dam of Merit or the GPA Program benefit members in showcasing their exceptional cattle. The AGA also offers assistance in marketing
opportunities. Gelbvieh Media Productions (GMP) can assist with all of your advertising and design needs. On a monthly basis the Gelbvieh World or The Profit Picture is dispersed to members of the association and anyone who has purchased a Gelbvieh animal within the year. Breeders can advertise within these publications to further spread the word about their programs. Whether you need help marketing your cattle or help finding cattle to buy, our association offers staff to aid in this process. Members can also participate in Gelbvieh Maternal Edge sales to market their females to other cattlemen. The American Gelbvieh Foundation (AGF) is another important program of the association. The foundation ensures opportunities in member education and youth development as well as funding research for advancement of the breed. Within the foundation there are various different programs for members to partake in to give back to the breed and association. The foundation requires our help but in return it helps us along with our breed. Simply another example of what being a member has to offer. Those of us that aren’t quite old enough to be adult members have the opportunity to reap one of the greatest benefits the AGA has to offer. That of course is our wonderful junior association. THE FOLLOWING DIVISION reserve champion was misrepresented in the coverage of the 2015 National Gelbvieh and Balancer® Show in both the National Western Stock Show official results and in the March 2015 Gelbvieh World. AGA would like to take the time to congratulate the winner. In the Gelbvieh spring heifer calf division the reserve division winner is MDR Pretty Woman 405B ET owned by Dobson Ranch of Kaw City, Oklahoma. She is March 12, 2014 daughter of BCFG Butlers Red Oak 908W. FFF
continued from page 32 Junior Association (AGJA) excels at bettering the future of our breed and the beef industry as a whole. The chances to become better leaders and cattlemen and women are endless within the AGJA. Being able to attend Junior Classic and the regional shows allow members to not only exhibit their cattle, but also participate in contests that improve their public speaking, communication skills as well as expanding their knowledge about the breed and industry. Older members have the opportunity to attend the POWER Conference every other year. This gives them the opportunity to interact and meet juniors from another breed and gain new connections while furthering their knowledge and skills. It is safe to say that I truly feel that the junior side of things is one of the greatest aspects of our breed.
As a whole, whether it is the staff, board of directors or members, the people within the association are fantastic. Everyone is passionate about Gelbvieh cattle and making our breed the best it can be. The fellow members of the AGA and AGJA are just another great attribute to our breed. None of us would be members if it wasn’t for the one thing bringing us all together, and that is Gelbvieh cattle. Granted, you can know the people or raise the cattle without being a member, but why wouldn’t you want to be a member? When you take a step back and look at all The American Gelbvieh Association has to offer both adults and juniors it is easy to see what an incredible association it is. So if you aren’t already a member just remember that… MEMBERSHIP PAYS! FFF

Taubenheim Gelbvieh, Amherst, Nebraska, held their 25th annual production sale February 2, 2015 at the ranch. A cool morning with a little snow on the ground led up to a great sale. The offering of stout and powerful bulls, and easy keeping females made a lot of friends on sale day. TAU Sniper 96B, a homozygous black and homozygous polled son of TAU Top Gun 292Y caught a lot of attention in the yards in Denver at the National Western Stock Show, and his potential as a Balancer® AI sire was recognized by many on sale day. After lots of interest and active bidding Judd Ranch of Pomona, Kansas became owners of this super attractive powerhouse herdsire at $17,000. TAU Mr. Prosperity 151B, a carcass and performance stud that posted a yearling weight of 1464 pounds and scanned a 17.2 square inch ribeye along with a 4.1 IMF also brought $17,000. TAU Mr. Grid Topper 21B, a member of the Reserve Champion Pen of Five Balancers in Denver, was a stand out on sale day. His attractive look gained him a lot of attention especially that of Bar Arrow Gelbvieh of Phillipsburg, Kansas who added him to their herd bull battery for $15,000. TAU Mr. Focus 40B a member of the Champion Pen of Three Balancers was the next high seller. This halfblood calving ease sire has a lot of AI potential and Tim 38 | APRIL 2015
Mulroy of Mayetta, Kansas recognized his potential purchasing 40B for $14,500. TAU Mr. Consensus 164B a 50 percent son of the popular AI sire Connealy Consensus and backed by a great red cow caught the eye of Jerry Grund who purchased him for $13,500. TAU Blackshirt 8B, the Breeder’s Choice Gelbvieh Bull Futurity entry, caught the eye of many breeders on sale day and was the high selling purebred. This embryo calf is out of HYEK Black Impact and backed by a great donor cow. He found a new home with Holle Gelbvieh of Oberlin, Kansas for $10,000. The high selling pair was Ms. Hoover Dam 3032A, a powerful brood cow with an attractive heifer calf at side. She sold to Cooper Gelbvieh of Burdett, Kansas for $4,000.
