PRESIDENT’S VIEW

Take Charge of Our Destiny By Rob Arnold SIX YEARS AGO in January, I was elected to the American Gelbvieh Association (AGA) Board of Directors. It has been a very challenging and rewarding six years. About the same time I was elected to the board the cattle industry, particularly the seedstock industry, was being challenged with genetic abnormalities that could be identified through genetic testing. It just so happened that a high percentage of these abnormalities existed in the largest cattle breed in the U.S. Did this surprise anyone? It probably did surprise a few people, but most understood that these abnormalities would be exhibited by populations that have more straightbreeding. As a result, most of these abnormalities were showing up in purebred operations within that breed. Commercial producers were not seeing as much of this issue due to the common practice of crossbreeding. At the time, our board meetings were consumed by this topic with a huge chunk of time devoted to genetic abnormalities. And I assume every other breed association board was caught up in the same discussion.

Obviously, the biggest discussion revolved around the economic impact to the breed, to the members, and to the industry. As far as I know it caused a lot of stress, many sleepless nights due to the uncertainty of the situation and probably was a little confusing for most that were impacted. The outcome, at this point, has been to test all sires used for AI and donor dams used for Embryo Transfer. Most reputable breeders are testing any animals retained for breeding purposes if they are suspect carriers. As a result, the industry is breeding better cattle with fewer defects. Those cattle are producing more live births and more healthy calves which equates to more revenue for the entire cattle industry. What does this have to do with the AGA? Well, if 6 | DECEMBER 2014

you agree with my assessment as this point, maybe this will help many of you understand the process your board has been tasked with the past six years in regards to our management and staffing changes. It has not been easy…in fact it has been very challenging for everyone involved including board members, association members and staff. So the same uncertainty, the same confusion, and the same stress that existed with change caused by genetic abnormalities exists with the change in our staffing and management styles. Knowing that change causes a level of anxiety to everyone it affects, the AGA Board of Directors wants everyone to know that our new Executive Director, Myron Edelman, is adamant about building the BEST TEAM and the BEST ASSOCIATION IN THE BUSINESS! This will include, but not be limited to; traveling field men or women, a promotion team to include member education, a strong breed improvement group and a customer service group. Does this mean it will look like the traditional breed association framework? If it does, we will fail! So, if we are going to offer these member services we probably will do things a little different than we’ve done in the past. Fortunately, or unfortunately (depends on whether your glass is half full or half empty) we live in a very dynamic and challenging environment. In an effort to remain both current and successful we must adapt to changing conditions and requirements. We must adopt new practices when necessary and we must take charge of the things we can control. The AGA Board of Directors has challenged our executive director to do just that. If the AGA is to remain relevant in the cattle industry and continue to gain market share we must be willing to embrace change, adopt new practices and take charge of our destiny. Failure is not an option! FFF

EXECUTIVE’S VIEW

Looking to the Future By Myron Edelman THE MOST RECENT months at the American Gelbvieh Association (AGA) have introduced many changes; including new faces to the staff, a new database service, new genetic tools and intensified marketing programs. Change can sometimes give us pause and cause uncertainty. However, it has been said, “If you don’t like change you will like obsolescence even less.”

Operating at the speed of commerce is challenging if we consider the advancements made to beef cattle and the industry itself, especially in the past five to ten years. AGA is obligated not only to keep up with available technology but more importantly, lead the industry in providing accurate genetic information, useful selection tools, and timely service for stakeholders. We must also provide an avenue to connect that information to each link in the supply chain all for the benefit of the beef business. An elevated positive experience for ranchers, farmers, feeders and packers that utilize Gelbvieh genetics occurs with maximized accuracy in the information produced to describe Gelbvieh and Balancer® cattle. Members have the option to enhance the accuracy of EPDs through genomic testing with Gelbvieh Genomic Profiler High Density or Low Density tests along with an entire suite of individual DNA testing and EPDs available to assist in the mating and selection process. AGA now provides selection assistance through DNA technology to commercial cow/calf operations as well. The “Maternal Edge” Female Profile will be useful to producers in the replacement heifer selection process and serve as a potential marketing tool for Gelbvieh & Balancer females offered for sale as replacement quality. More tools are available than just DNA testing. The $Cow index has been developed to place even more emphasis on the maternal strengths of Gelbvieh and Balancer cattle.

8 | DECEMBER 2014

The increase in available information for Gelbvieh influenced cattle and members of the AGA amplified the necessity to streamline the process in which members record data on their respective cowherds. In turn, it became important to improve the efficiency of the process with which members may retrieve data describing Gelbvieh and Balancer cattle. In August of 2014, AGA completed the transition to a new database service provided by DigitalBeef LLC. As breeders become more accustomed to the features made available with the AGA database they will be able to decrease the time spent in the data recording and retrieving process to have the most reliable information possible to present to their customers. Increased information, improved tools and an advanced system to navigate those tools and data require a conduit to deliver the message of these benefits to Gelbvieh stakeholders. The AGA marketing team and Gelbvieh Media Productions utilizes a number of methods to assist AGA members in conveying the message. Gelbvieh World magazine and The Profit Picture are delivered to producers around the country. Social media provides an instantaneous message to the membership. Gelbvieh Media Productions also offers services to spread the message and market Gelbvieh and Balancer cattle through the E-blast service to advertise sales and events. Sale catalog production is also available to help make your sale a successful event. The opportunity to increase Gelbvieh mass will come through successfully providing genetic solutions and opportunity for a positive and profitable experience for owners of Gelbvieh influenced cattle at each stage of the supply chain. Continuing to identify progressive advancements and evolve to meet the needs of modern beef production will secure a competitive advantage for Gelbvieh and Balancer producers. President John F. Kennedy once said, “Change is the law of life. Those who look only to the past or present are certain to miss the future.” FFF

Furthermore, we take our selection criteria one step further than most. We performance test our bulls and replacement females and incorporate the latest DNA technology. FEATURES AND TIPS

AGA Registry Service – By Susan Willmon IN THE PAST many, AGA members relied on a printed registration certificate as a means of having current information on animals that were active in their herd. With the new AGA registry service several new options exist to provide up-to-date information for member use. Below we will review a couple of the options now available.

One of the challenges with certificates is that the performance data, EPDs, and progeny summary data can be updated at any time and may be out-of-date fairly quickly after the document is printed. Many folks create a binder of certificates that might have been requested postweaning but don’t update those as an animal adds yearling or progeny data.

The traditional registration certificate has long been the tool of choice to review animal data. Included in the new registry service is the ability for an animal’s owner to print a current registration certificate on demand. When you view the Animal Detail Screen on an animal in your active inventory you will see the word Certificate in the bottom left of the animal header portion of the screen. (See screen shot below.) Clicking on this will bring up a copy of the animal’s certificate on the screen. From here you can print a copy on your printer. If you want to print this on AGA’s certificate paper you can contact the office and we will provide you with sheets of the paper we use to print certificates.

As a response to the membership’s request for a more concise document that includes both pedigree and performance information, the Herdbook Data Sheet was developed. This can be found on the bottom of the right hand portion of the animal header. Clicking on Data Sheet will display this one page document that also includes EPDs, complete performance data, pedigree and summary statistics. This document can be printed by anyone, member or non-member, that may look up an animal via the Animal Search. Having printed copies of the Data Sheet for animals on display at a show, a field day or consigned to a sale will provide an up-to-date reference tool on the animal.

The layout of the certificate has changed slightly, but included is all the prior information including ownership, pedigree information, current EPDs and performance data. Additionally, we have included DNA results as well as genetic condition status on the new version of the certificate. As with the prior version the reverse side can be used to enter transfer information. A complete description of all the information that is presented on the certificate can be found in the How to: Read a Registration Certificate document on the Animal Registration page under the Education Center tab at www.gelbvieh.org.

12 | DECEMBER 2014

One final option that is applicable for animals that may be offered for sale via private treaty on the farm is to use the sale catalog option. For those members who used to utilize the Herdtrack software this feature is very similar to what could be created in that program. Animals can be designated for sale and comments can be added. Once complete, the catalog can be saved as a PDF document and emailed to interested parties or printed just prior to an on farm visit. A complete guide, in both video and printed form, to use this feature can be found on the AGA’s Registry Service Tutorial page (How To: List Animals for Sale and Build a Sale Catalog). As members become more familiar with the AGA’s registry service tool we will continue to add access to animal data in different methods. Please refer to the AGA’s registry tutorials for training and resource material as we add and enhance features of this software program. FFF

Industry Professionals Discuss Maternal Traits at AGA Convention Panel 1: Maternal Selection Process; Utilizing DNA and Selection of Indexes Friday, January 9, 1:15 p.m. – Double Tree Presenters: Scott Speidel, Ph.D, Colorado State University, Greg Comstock, Gro-Op, LLC.

Moderator: Kari White, AGA Breed Improvement Data Analyst

Dr. Scott Speidel joined Colorado State University (CSU) in July 2014 as an assistant professor of beef cattle breeding and genetics in the Department of Animal Sciences. Scott grew up in Lancaster, California to a family of elementary and high school teachers. Scott received his undergraduate B.S. degree in Animal Sciences from California State University, Fresno, where he spent the majority of his time working with swine and dairy programs. His M.S. in Animal Sciences specializing in Dairy Molecular Genetics was earned in 2001 from the University of Arizona under the direction of Dr. Sue DeNise. Scott moved to Fort Collins, Colorado during the summer of 2001 and began working as a research associate performing genetic evaluations for CSU’s Center for Genetic Evaluation of Livestock. Scott received his Ph.D. in Breeding and Genetics in 2011 under the direction of Dr. R. Mark Enns. The topic of his dissertation was the development of random regression models for the prediction of days to finish in beef cattle. In his tenure at CSU, Scott has performed over 160 beef cattle genetic evaluations. He currently lives in Loveland, Colorado with his wife Kathryn and daughters, Sarah and Amelia.

Greg Comstock owns and manages Gro-Op, LLC., working with beef seedstock and commercial cow/calf operations in the development of long-range strategies designed to grow their beef enterprises. Prior to this solo endeavor, Greg was on staff at the Red Angus Association of America (RAAA), initially working in the commercial marketing department and overseeing breed promotion. During this time, RAAA launched the GridMaster carcass value recognition and ProCow commercial replacement sourcing programs. Between 2008 and 2013, Comstock served as RAAA’s CEO. During this time he worked with his counterparts at American Simmental Association (ASA) to initiate the industry’s first multi-breed genetic evaluation conducted jointly by two breed associations. Today, that project has grown to include over 13 million animal records and four of North America’s seven largest breed associations – including the American Gelbvieh Association.

Kari White is the breed improvement data analyst for the American Gelbvieh Association (AGA). Kari completed her master’s degree in Animal Breeding and Genetics at Kansas State University (KSU) and is currently working on a Ph.D.

under the guidance of Dr. Bob Weaber at KSU. Her AGA responsibilities include working with industry partners and scientists in the development of new genetic improvement projects, facilitation of DNA testing through Geneseek and member support for breed improvement.

Panel 2: Maternal Value; Gelbvieh Females Friday, January 9, 3:00 p.m. – Double Tree Presenters: Brian Dunn, Sandy Knoll Farm, Patsy Houghton, Ph.D, Heartland Cattle Company,

Moderator: Kari White, AGA Breed Improvement Data Analyst

Brian Dunn is a partner in a diversified family agriculture operation located near St. John, Kansas. The operation raises a variety of crops, sells seed, has a seedstock swine multiplication unit and raises Gelbvieh and Balancer® cattle. Brian oversees the seed sales, alfalfa production, crop data collection and the cattle operation. Brian and his father have felt data collection and utilization of technology is a very integral part of their operation. With the gilt multiplication unit, identifying and multiplying outstanding females is of top priority. Thus the operation has utilized maternal indexes and top indexing boars for several years. Sandy Knoll Farm has raised Gelbvieh cattle for over 30 years, collected individual feedlot and carcass data for 15 years and has performed Residual Feed Intake (RFI) testing on bulls for the last five years. Brian and his wife, Carolyn, have three sons; Preston, Ian and Garrett.

Dr. Patsy Houghton was reared on a large cow/ calf operation near Tipton, Kansas. She received her B.S. and M.S. degrees from Kansas State University (KSU), taught two years at California State University-Fresno, served two years as youth and education manager for the American Simmental Association, and then obtained her Ph.D. from Purdue University. She held the KSU Northwest Extension beef specialist position four years and then started Heartland Cattle Company near McCook, Nebraska where she pioneered the concept of ‘Professional Heifer Development.’ Patsy served as co-chair of NCBA’s Cattlemen’s College for 11 years, received KSU’s 2011 Distinguished Animal Sciences and Industry Alumnus Award, was named Purdue University’s College of Ag Distinguished Alumni in 2010 and was selected for Purdue’s prestigious Old Masters Mentoring Program in 2009. Patsy currently serves on the Board of Directors for the KSU Livestock and Meat Industry Council.

All Committee Meetings Held Via Free Web-Meeting THE AMERICAN GELBVIEH Association committees play a vital role in the development and implementation of AGA programs, services and policies. An active committee process is one of the core grass roots values of the AGA. All AGA committee meetings will be held in midNovember through mid-December via web-meeting prior to the annual convention. There will be no 16 | DECEMBER 2014

committee meetings at convention. Instead, all members are invited and encouraged to participate in the committee web-meetings from the comfort of their own home. To participate, members only need an Internet connection. Web-meetings can be accessed via a URL link from a home computer, tablet or mobile device. This is a free service to members and no special software is

required. A tele-conference option is also available. Through the web-meetings, members will be able to listen and watch presentations, participate in discussions, make motions and vote. The core functions and value of the committees – making recommendations to the Board of Directors – will not change. The only change is the venue.

More details and instructions on how to access the web-meetings will be provided to members via the Enewsletter as well as on the AGA website. Please take note of the committee meeting dates and times. All committee meetings take place at 7:00 p.m. CST.

Andy LeDoux, Kansas I would like to thank you for the opportunity to run for re-election to the American Gelbvieh Association (AGA) Board of Directors. My wife, Danielle, and I operate LeDoux Ranch. We raise Gelbvieh, Balancer®, and Red Angus seedstock along with a commercial cowherd. We are also engaged in our family farming operation. It consists of both dryland and irrigated cropland. My wife and I have been blessed with two great kids, JW and Jady. LeDoux Ranch is a family run operation with the kids involved in the day-to-day running of the operation. I graduated from Kansas State University where I received a bachelor’s degree in Animal Science. I am involved with the Republic County Livestock Association and serve as a deacon for the Central Christian Church in Belleville, Kansas. In addition, I am the chairman for the AGA National Show committee. I have had the privilege serving you as a Board member for the past 3 years. This allowed me to see firsthand the time and dedication required for this position. 18 | DECEMBER 2014

It is time for our breed to become a front-runner in the beef industry. Looking ahead we must sell our breed to the industry based on our strengths. I believe we need to do what is best for the breed and not just our own operations. My ultimate goal, if re-elected, is to explore ways to promote more efficiently and create new memberships for the sustainability of this breed. We must remain dedicated as breeders and agree to keep moving forward. Remember what makes us strong is our membership. I ask you to please take the time to vote in person or by the absentee process. I would be honored to serve you again on the board. If you have any questions or concerns please contact me. Let’s keep the Gelbvieh Breed the Continental Breed of Choice!

It is time for our breed to become a frontrunner in the beef industry. Looking ahead we must sell our breed to the industry based on our strengths. – Andy LeDoux

Neal Pearson, South Dakota I appreciate the opportunity to seek a second term on the American Gelbvieh Association (AGA) Board of Directors. These past three years the current board has dealt with many issues, some have been easy and others have not. But our goal is always the same, to make AGA the best it can be for its members and to increase the Gelbvieh breed’s position in the beef industry. I welcome your support to enable me to continue in this endeavor.

Where do we go from here and how do we get there? Those are the questions we must ask ourselves and find the answers. – Neal Pearson For the past two years I have served as the AGA treasurer and am currently the treasurer of the newly formed American Gelbvieh Foundation Board as well. Working closely with Dianne Coffman has been great and I wish to thank her for her input and guidance. Where do we go from here and how do we get there? Those are the questions we must ask ourselves and find the answers. We live in an era of fast moving technological change. However, we can take advantage of these advancements to: A.) Make our breed better. B.) Offer better services to our members and commercial producers. C.) Enable us to create new opportunities that will increase our presence in the industry. D.) Increase our financial position which will then allow us to pursue new programs, research and promotion. E.) Change the way the office operates on a day-today basis. In August of 1971, Jan and I were married. I

graduated from South Dakota State University in 1973. God has blessed us with three wonderful children; a daughter, Jennifer and two sons, Levi and Lucas; as well as seven grandchildren. Three years ago Jennifer, husband Chuck and three children returned home to be a part of Pearson Cattle Company Inc. The operation was established in the late 1970’s and has been a member of AGA for 31 years. Pearson Cattle Company Inc. is a diversified operation that runs 400 cows, of which, 250 head are registered Gelbvieh. In closing, I wish to thank the membership for the opportunity to serve you these past three years and would appreciate your support for another term.

Dustin Rippe, Nebraska You could say I’ve known Gelbvieh cattle all my life, since I started my first cow herd with my dad at the ripe age of nine. Gelbvieh cattle have influenced my personal and professional development ever since. Our herd has grown to over 600 head and today we call it Rippe Gelbvieh. My family has invested blood, sweat and tears while constantly evaluating the economic principles that allow both us and our customers to be successful. We strive to provide commercial cattlemen with the genetics and customer service to make them successful. The pride we take in our customer’s success carries through to the satisfaction we find in providing high quality beef to consumers across the U.S. which is a trait that we also manage through extensive collection of carcass data. I have gained hands-on knowledge by developing the Rippe Gelbvieh program, through academics and other career opportunities. I was a member of the National Champion Livestock Judging team at Butler County Community College. From there I went to Colorado State University where I majored in Agricultural Business and Animal Science. After completing college I had a choice to make. Was I ready to return home and farm full time, or was it more beneficial to gain

After 18 months, I accepted a position at CattleFax where I was an analyst for Nebraska and Colorado fed cattle and Midwest feeder cattle. Gottsch Cattle Company asked me to lead their risk management program after a year at CattleFax. At Gottsch I managed risk for an operation that finishes 250,000 head of cattle annually. Also for Gottsch, I purchased and managed the risk on approximately 20 million bushels of corn annually. Currently, my partner and I own and manage RG Ventures and RG Cattle. RG Ventures manages personal and private investments in the commodity futures markets. RG Cattle feeds 15,000 head of cattle on an annual basis. I have also moved back home to be more involved in the family operation with my dad, Duane Rippe. In my career I have gained a lot of experience in the cattle industry from the ranch to the packing industry. I would like to share these experiences and knowledge I have gained with the breed. We all have a lot at stake to ensure the success of the breed. It would be my pleasure to bring my business mind and my commercial cattle knowledge to the board. Additionally, I feel my intimate knowledge of the cattle feeding and packing sector can offer a technical perspective that few breed associations are able to obtain. I would appreciate your vote for the Gelbvieh Board of Directors; it would allow me to give back to the breed which has given so much to me and my family.

included in this group.

First, I would like to say that it is an honor to be on the list of candidates for the American Gelbvieh Association (AGA) Board of Directors. I have become acquainted with many of these men in the last few years and am humbled to be

My wife, Karen and I are both veterinarians and own a veterinary practice in Hattiesburg, Mississippi established in 1983. There are now five veterinarians in the practice and with that, I am able to focus most of my attention to cattle. Not only do my wife and I have a shared passion for veterinary medicine, but we also hold degrees in Animal Sciences and spent our undergraduate college career competing on livestock and meats judging teams. I have served as Area Vice President of the Mississippi Cattlemen’s Association, and all offices of the Mississippi Gelbvieh Association. I have also been a member and president of the Mississippi Board of Veterinary Medicine (the state’s veterinarian licensure organization) and the local veterinary emergency group, which I was instrumental in starting.

The enthusiastic people of the MSGA are the reason I have accepted this nomination. I share their passion for producing excellent cattle and promoting Gelbvieh. – Lowell Rogers Now, let’s talk about these Gelbvieh cattle. I started breeding our cattle to Gelbvieh bulls in the late ‘80s. Our first purebred was born in ’96 and she became a Dam of Distinction. We have approximately 60 Gelbvieh, Balancer® and Southern Balancer® cattle. We are trying to find a niche for the Southern Balancers. We test and market our bulls through Seedstock Plus. Our son and

daughter were also members of the AGJA and showed Gelbvieh cattle.

private treaty sales year round. Our herd consists of over 350 registered Gelbvieh, Balancer and Angus females.

Of all the organizations that I have been involved in, my work with the Mississippi Gelbvieh Association (MSGA) has been the most enjoyable. The enthusiastic people of the MSGA are the reason I have accepted this nomination. I share their passion for producing excellent cattle and promoting Gelbvieh. I am very proud to be a charter member of this organization.

I believe that the cattle industry is now facing challenging times, yet is poised to capitalize on the lowest herd numbers we have seen in decades. We as seedstock producers, enthusiasts, commercial cattlemen and breed leaders must meet the needs of the current situation and rise to the occasion to promote Gelbvieh as the Continental breed of choice. I also believe we must look to our customers, the commercial cattlemen, as well

As for this election, with the slate of nominees on the ballot, AGA cannot go wrong. If you do feel that I could contribute in a positive way to this organization, please mark me on your ballot. If I were elected, I will work diligently to help keep this institution on the right track and the Gelbvieh breed a positive force in the cattle industry.

Duane Strider, North Carolina It is an honor to be considered to serve as an AGA director. I have had commercial or registered cattle since high school and it has always been my passion. Wendy, my wife of 27 years, and I own C-Cross Cattle Company and have been producing Gelbvieh and Balancer® cattle for 11 years. We have three children; Evelyn, 9, Emily, 12, and Shelton, 23.

We focus strongly on producing high growth, high carcass and strong maternal genetics, helping the commercial cattleman achieve the goal of getting a premium for their cattle. – Duane Strider as feedyards, packers and consumers as we make our decisions as we advance in the next decade. I certainly seek your consideration and would be honored to serve the membership another three years in this capacity. I also encourage each member to vote for, and support, this well qualified group of candidates and get involved in your local associations because our future depends on it.

After retiring from a management position in the poultry industry I was able to complete a lifelong goal of being able to devote my full attention to our cattle operation. I am passionate about the future of our breed and truly believe that Gelbvieh genetics are a staple in the cattle industry. We focus strongly on producing high growth, high carcass and strong maternal genetics, helping the commercial cattleman achieve the goal of getting a premium for their cattle. C-Cross Cattle Company operates from the J-Bob Farms location in Biscoe, North Carolina where we have an annual bull and female sale each November and offer

VIEW OF THE NUMBERS

What’s Your Yardstick? How do you measure your genetic progress? Are this year’s calves better than last? Those are questions that don’t have simple answers. By Susan Willmon EACH YEAR MEMBERS of the American Gelbvieh Association (AGA) submit large amounts of data and in turn the AGA provides EPDs and compiled performance data on animals within a member’s herd. This means there’s lots of data in and lots of data out. For many, the information just looks like pages of numbers. Can we do better? Can we provide this data in an easier to comprehend form that answers those initial questions?

You may remember a couple of years ago genetic trend charts were produced for individual members by AGA staff. A great tool for members to use but it was difficult to continually update as new data was entered

into the AGA registry. One of the goals in moving to the new registry system was to provide some innovative ways to look at the data that is collected by members. Online, real time genetic trends are one of these ways. If you have logged onto your registry account you will notice an option under your Herd Mgmt menu called Tools. In this Tools menu is an option called Genetic Trends. Clicking on Genetic Trends will bring up a display for your herd. Across the top are tabs for each EPD. Clicking on the respective EPD tab will bring up the Genetic Trend screen. This screen includes a chart (Figure 1 below) that shows the average EPD value by birth year across the whole AGA herdbook as well as an average value for your herd. Since current year data is typically not complete for traits like yearling and carcass these EPD values may vary from your current EPD trend until those animal have had all their data added and gone through a National Cattle Evaluation EPD run.

Figure 1: Weaning weight statistics

The main part of the screen shows the Genetic Trend Graph (Figure 2). One line (black line with red dots) is the data from your herd plotted against the AGA herdbook average (yellow line). At the bottom of the screen is a chart that shows the number of animals recorded in your herd for each birth year (not shown). So how might you evaluate the data presented in these graphs? Say, for example, you chose sires to use in the 2012 breeding season for 2013 calves with EPDs to

22 | DECEMBER 2014

Figure 2: Weaning weight Genetic Trend Graph

improve the overall carcass merit of your calf crop. To start with, you might look at the chart for the FPI (Feedlot Profit Index) which accounts for both gain and carcass merit to see if there was an improvement in that value for 2013 over 2012. From there, you can review the component EPDs such as REA and MB. Did those calves from 2013 improve? Do the calves have higher FPI values like you had hoped? (See Figure 3 below)

search tool. Clicking on this Trends tab will display information that is detailed above. Some might ask why don’t we present data such as average weights on a year to year basis in a similar format. The value of EPDs is that they account for all the management and environment effects that impact these values. A one year decrease in adjusted weaning weights, for example, might be more a factor of drought than sire selection. Presenting genetic trends based on EPDs provides an unbiased view of change from year to year. These genetic trend charts are just one example of how we hope to present data in varied formats going forward. For those of you who like to sort and re-sort spreadsheets we will continue to provide numbers in an accessible manner for download into these types of tools. For others, a graph with a line pointed in the desireable direction is the best yardstick.

Figure 3: FPI Trends As we increasingly encourage our commercial customers to use AGA indexes as a primary selection tool, providing these genetic trends charts for others to view is an easy way to document your selection progress to others. In the Prefs tab on your General Profile Information view you can select whether others can view your genetic trends. Selecting this option presents a new tab attached to your membership profile for anyone to view. This tab is called Trends and provides access to your genetic

One of the goals in moving to the new registry system was to provide some innovative ways to look at the data that is collected by members. Online, real time genetic trends are one of these ways.

Data processing is increasingly real time with our online system. As actual weaning weights are entered, adjusted weaning weights, ratios and interim EPDs are presented in the same online session. Long term, we are working towards a model where EPDs will be more real time as well. Interims and twice yearly EPDs runs will be a thing of the past. So a tool like these simple genetic trend charts will give you an accessible yardstick to measure your progress as soon as you enter your data. As you become more familiar with the tools that are currently available we would like to hear from you. What other tools would you like to see? Is there other data that you wish to have access to? We are excited about the ability of this software to evolve and meet your needs to evaluate your own geneticprogress and provide access to this information to your customers as well. FFF

MATERNAL EDGE American Gelbvieh Association Releases Maternal Edge Female Profile By AGA Staff THE AMERICAN GELBVIEH Association (AGA) is excited to announce the release of the Maternal Edge Female Profile for producers to use on commercial females. This DNA profile, done in conjunction with Geneseek®, is a low-density panel to be used by producers as a sorting tool for Gelbvieh influenced commercial females.

The panel is priced at $26.00 and can be order by downloading the AGA Commercial DNA Testing form from www.gelbvieh.org and following these simple instructions:

Traits included in the panel are calving ease, maternal calving ease, weaning weight, yield grade, marbling, and carcass weight. These traits are measured for the female against the entire Gelbvieh population with Molecular Breeding Values (MBVs). Each female tested with the Maternal Edge Female Profile will receive a score of 1 to 10 for each of the six traits.

To allow for faster processing of the DNA sample(s) please save a copy of the completed file. After the file is saved please email to kario@gelbvieh.org. Next, print two copies of the DNA Sample Form and Order Form. Send one copy with payment to the AGA office and send the other copy to with the samples directly to Geneseek.

Enter information in DNA Sample Form. Total for payment will be automatically updated on the last tab of the order form at the bottom.

Please include an email address on the DNA Order Form to receive a copy of the results electronically.

The Maternal Edge Female Profile has heavy emphasis on maternal characteristics but also includes end-product traits as well. Because the majority of steer calves and a portion of heifers out of a cowherd end up in a feedyard, it is beneficial for more than just maternal traits to be evaluated in a commercial female panel.

Once test samples are received at Geneseek please allow three to four weeks for results to become available. Results will be sent via an email attachment once tests are complete. If a receiving a hard copy of the results is preferred either reply to the email with the request or contact the AGA office.

Parent verification is also included in the panel, if the option is selected on the order form and sire and dam have parentage markers on file with the AGA.

DNA Testing Options THE AMERICAN GELBVIEH Association (AGA) has several DNA testing options for both seedstock and commercial producers. Becoming familiar with the tests that are offered and which is best for your operation will make the process simpler and more efficient. Below is a list of all DNA tests available through the AGA and a brief description of each. All testing in conducted through Geneseek®. Genomic Option 1 (GGP-HD): This is a high-density panel that includes parentage markers. Parent verification can also be completed if parents are on file with parentage markers with the AGA. The test also includes Tenderness and Docility tests. This test is for highly used sires and dams in the population and is required for AI sires and donor dams. Genomic Option 2 (GGP-LD): This low-density panel includes parentage markers and parent verification if parents are on file with parentage markers with AGA. The test also includes Tenderness and Docility. This panel is generally used on registered sale animals and herd sires. All animals tested using Genomic Option 1 or 2 will receive Genomic-Enhanced EPDs. Tenderness: Identifies the tenderness potential of beef cattle through analyzing multiple markers associated with tenderness. Results are given in a 1 – 10 score, with 10 being the most tender. Docility: Identifies the animal’s genetic potential to exhibit a calm disposition or to have offspring with a calm disposition. Results are also presented as a 1 -10 score, with 10 being very calm. Coat color: Tests to determine if the animal carries any recessive genes for red coat color or wild type. Diluter: Describes the carrier or non-carrier status of the animal pertaining to the Diluter gene that creates the traditional yellow cow color in the Gelbvieh breed. BVD-PI: Tests the animal to determine if they are persistently infected with Bovine Viral Diarrhea (BVD). BVD-PI testing requires a hair sample. Horned/Polled: Tests whether the animal is a carrier of the horned gene. Genetic Conditions TestingOS - Osteopetrosis: Tests to see if the animal is a carrier of the recessive gene that results in a defect found primarily in Red Angus influenced animals. If two carriers are mated together, this defect also known as Marble Bone Disease

can result in a small, stillborn calf with abnormalities of the skeletal system. AM - Arthrogryposis Multiplex: Determines whether the animal is a carrier for the recessive genetic condition that is passed to Gelbvieh and Balancer® animals primarily through Angus influence. This genetic condition, also known as Curly Calf, results in calves that are born dead or die shortly after birth and have an abnormal appearance with crooked spine and legs and have limited muscle development. NH – Neuropathic Hydrocephalus: Tests if the animal carries this recessive genetic condition that is passed through Angus influence. NH results in abortions or calves that are born near term with very low birth weights. Calves with this defect have an enlarged cranium with the cranial cavity filled with fluid and no brain or spinal tissue is evident. DD – Developmental Duplication: Determines if the animal is a carrier of this recessive genetic condition that comes from an Angus influence. Symptoms are exhibited differently in affected animals and can range from a smaller sized calf to an extra limb (in the shoulder area). Genetic conditions result in affected offspring when the mating of two carriers occurs. To manage the prevalence of genetic conditions in your herd, mate carrier animals to only non-carriers. Testing progeny of carrier animals and retaining only clean animals will help keep the frequency of genetic conditions in your herd low. Maternal Edge Female Profile: Intended for commercial Gelbvieh influenced females and measures calving ease, maternal calving ease, weaning weight, yield grade, marbling, and carcass weight against the entire Gelbvieh population with MBVs. Stand Alone Parentage: Parentage markers are included with this test. Parents of an animal can be verified when the option is selected on the order form, if the parents are on file with the AGA. If you’re unsure if the parents are on file please contact the AGA office. For more information regarding DNA testing, visit the DNA testing page under the Education Center tab at www. gelbvieh.org or contact Kari White at kario@gelbvieh.org. AGA members may order DNA tests through the online AGA Registry Service. All commercial producers may order the test by downloading the AGA Commercial DNA Testing Form from www.gelbvieh.org. Please do not hesitate to contact the AGA office if you need assistance ordering any DNA test. FFF GELBVIEH WORLD | 31

JUNIOR VOICE

A Time of Reflection By Carter Mitchell THIS TIME OF year has always

been a time of reflection. As the Holidays and a new year approach, it makes me think of how far we’ve come in the last year. We have made new friends, added new members, and accomplished goals all while striving to be the best advocates for Gelbvieh and our association. Over the last year I have had the pleasure of attending the North American International Livestock Exposition and the Youth Beef Industry Conference. I have met so many new people and made many more close friends through all of these adventures. Being the youngest on the AGJA board can occasionally be demanding, but it has been a great opportunity to learn from those older than me who have been in my shoes. The board experience

help me in the show ring but also has taught me leadership, the importance of great comradery and assist me in my future goals. I would like to thank everyone for their help above all it has given me confidence and support this past year and for to start the next chapter in my life. I graduate high school this year and I allowing me to be a part of the AGJA and AGJA Board of Directors. I wish am confident that this organization has provided me with ample lessons and The board experience has taught me connections leadership, the importance of great comradery to help me and above all it has given me confidence to succeed in whatever start the next chapter in my life. career path I decide to pursue. I plan to everyone good luck in Denver! Have attend Kansas State University and it’s reassuring to know that a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!
