A Program Built on Maternal Power In early 1996, we met with our accountant about starting a small purebred operation. A successful seedstock producer himself, Jack offered one piece of advice. Get the best females you can afford because your cows will be the foundation of your breeding program for years to come. Today, we are still following Jack’s advice. Although many of our successful females go back to the genetics of those original females, we still continue to search for that outstanding female that will improve our herd. Because our numbers are small, in order for a female to be considered she must first meet five criteria:
1. gentle disposition; 2. easy calving; 3. good growth; 4. carcass merit; and 5. impressive looks.
Then we study the pedigree to ensure the genes will improve the product we produce – the best red genetics In this last our breed has to offer. sale season, As our breeding program goes over 30% of forward, more emphasis is being our sales placed on improving carcass came from merit while maintaining the repeat maternal power our program is buyers of known for. PRESIDENT’S VIEW
Accomplishment Eleanor Roosevelt said, “What could we accomplish if we knew we could not fail?” By Rob Arnold AS WE LOOK at various undertakings of membership, staff and the Board of Directors of the American Gelbvieh Association we see that the past year has been one of being pro-active. Many things have been accomplished that will have a long-lasting impact on the Gelbvieh breed in positioning members for longterm success in the cattle industry. If one isn’t moving forward they are falling behind. The Impacting the Beef BusinessTM long-range strategic plan set the stage and direction for key areas that will continue to build on the strengths of the Gelbvieh breed and programs that will support those strengths. It supports the voice of the membership. It supports the direction in which we see our industry moving. It supports the needs in the development of services and programs for the membership. It serves as the guide in keeping not only the breed relevant, but as well, membership in a continuingly changing industry. The core policies of the plan are impactful in strategies and vision. One of the focal points within the long range plan is to continue to provide the best in genetic evaluation tools and research to allow for breed improvement. The Genomic Pioneers campaign resulted in genomicenhanced EPDs. The development of the $Cow index, in research mode, provides a genetic tool in which to measure the maternal strengths of Gelbvieh and Balancer® genetics, and will aid selection decisions for commercial and seedstock producers. The EPI (efficiency profit index) allows for producers to select for feed efficiency. Other breed improvement prediction tools are nearing completion that will assist in selection for economic traits. Breed promotion efforts have seen a dramatic expansion of exposure of Gelbvieh and Balancer materials 6 | JULY 2014
and information. The Gelbvieh World, The Profit Picture and the “Add Pounds. Add Profit.” insert continues to grow in number of impressions to commercial producers. The presence at major industry trade shows and conventions with the AGA booth has expanded the Gelbvieh reach greatly. Our field staff of area coordinators continue to provide service in calling on not only members but commercial producers and feed yards. In the near future, administration will be completing the transition to the DigitalBeef registry software. This new program will better serve membership in the management of data entry and herd information. We anticipate the change to occur near August 1. I would like to thank those who have agreed to serve on the newly formed American Gelbvieh Foundation Board of Directors. The aggressive goal in which to grow the foundation to $123,162 by 2015, and ultimately to $1 million, will take hard work and determination by these people as well as the entire membership. I ask that membership support this effort and consider how you can contribute to the continued growth and support of the Gelbvieh breed through the American Gelbvieh Foundation. Dr. Jim Gibb has served the American Gelbvieh Association as half-time executive director for almost two years. Dr. Gibb has accepted a full-time position and has resigned as AGA executive director effective June 1. Dr. Gibb served the breed extremely well, instrumenting the long-range plan and guiding AGA staff in many accomplishments. I wish Dr. Gibb the best and thank him for his service to the American Gelbvieh Association. Candidates for a full-time executive director are being interviewed. Every accomplishment starts with the decision to try. The American Gelbvieh Association membership has always accomplished things. We must set our goals high and be committed in accomplishing these goals. You measure the size of the accomplishment by the obstacles you had to overcome to reach your goals. Let us keep moving forward together. FFF

EXECUTIVE’S VIEW
Life Goes On Serving as your executive director for a second goaround has been a most enjoyable and rewarding experience. It has reminded me of what I always appreciated about breed association work, the people and their cattle. By Jim Gibb IN AUGUST OF 2012, at the conclusion of a strategic planning session with the American Gelbvieh Association Board of Directors, then President Mark Goes flattered me by asking if I’d consider serving as the part-time AGA executive director, and for how long. At that moment, I was a half-time consultant for Neogen Corporation, the parent company for GeneSeek® and Igenity®. Another gig made sense. Needless to say, the last two years have passed quickly. The AGA Board’s vision resulted in a timely and impactful strategic plan that has been aggressively implemented by AGA staff and supported by membership. I encourage you to read the most recent update in this issue of the Gelbvieh World. I recently made the decision to go full-time with GeneSeek, thus requiring me to step away from my executive director role with the AGA at the end of May. Shortly after I made this decision, a prospective customer and former AGJA member asked my opinion about the future of Gelbvieh and Balancer®. I mention this because, one, it came from a young man that 10 | JULY 2014
knows Gelbvieh well and will likely be an industry leader someday, and two, it required a relatively short answer (which I find challenging). My response was that Gelbvieh and Balancer have a very bright future if the following happens: • The AGA leadership, and the larger, more influential breeders that register the vast majority of Gelbvieh and Balancer seedstock (the top 8 percent of membership registers 50 percent of the cattle) must stay commercially focused. • Leadership must have the will to “own maternal” by implementing a true, total herd reporting system. Reproductive information on every cow is a must. • Breeders must stay committed to a strategic plan that focuses on providing AGA members and their commercial customers with world class selection tools so they can produce and promote seedstock that calve easy, grow well, have a reasonable opportunity to grade Choice and produce moderate sized, highly functional, well adapted momma
cows. The new $Cow index is a great step to that end. • Increase in prudent use of A.I. and E.T. must increase. Gelbvieh has always been behind other breeds in using technology to enhance selection intensity, thus impairing rate of genetic progress. Combining greater use of technology with the right goals will lead to continued achievement. This sounds pretty simple. It’s obviously more complicated, or is it? A challenge is the size of the Gelbvieh gene pool, especially when 1,200 breeders often have opposing views on breed direction. The smaller the number of breeders and cow population, the more imperative it is to have the right selection tools and common goals. In closing, I’ll be forever thankful to the 2012 AGA executive committee for asking me to serve as your executive director. It has been rewarding and fun. However, as renowned poet, Robert Frost, once said, “In three words I can sum up everything I’ve learned about life: it goes on.” Gelbvieh and Balancer cattle will go on too, while significantly increasing their impact on the beef business. VIEW OF THE NUMBERS Gelbvieh $Cow Provides Maternal Productivity Selection Index The Gelbvieh breed has a well-earned reputation as a strong maternal breed. In order to quantify those strengths the American Gelbvieh Association has engaged in research and development of EPDs and indexes to measure maternal traits. The results of this research are the creation of new tools to select for maternal productivity in Gelbvieh and Balancer® animals. By AGA Staff THE AMERICAN GELBVIEH Association has partnered with Dr. Mike MacNeil, PhD., of Delta G to develop the $Cow economic selection index. $Cow represents the genetic value in dollars of profit of an animal when retained as a replacement female relative to other animals in the herd. A higher number represents more profitable
genetics for maternal productivity. “$Cow will serve producers in selecting bulls that will sire daughters with stayability and reproductive efficiency as well as other traits that lead to profitability in a production system,” says Kari White, American Gelbvieh Association breed improvement data analyst.
The $Cow index includes several traits. The most essential of these traits are heifer pregnancy, 30-month pregnancy, and stayability.
Exclusive to the Gelbvieh Association’s $Cow index is the inclusion of a 30-month pregnancy (Pg30) EPD. The Pg30 EPD predicts the probability that a bull’s daughters will become pregnant and calve at three years of age, given that they calved as firstcalf heifers.

The heifer pregnancy (HP) EPD predicts the probability that a bull’s daughters will become pregnant as first-calf heifers in a regular breeding season, expressed as a percent. A higher value of this EPD is favorable, meaning that a higher percentage of a sire’s daughters get pregnant as first calf heifers compared to other sires in his contemporary group. Exclusive to the Gelbvieh Association’s $Cow index is the inclusion of a 30-month pregnancy (Pg30) EPD. The Pg30 EPD predicts the probability that a bull’s daughters will become pregnant and calve at three years of age, given that they calved as first-calf heifers. This EPD is expressed as a percent,

again, with a higher number being more favorable meaning a higher percentage of a sire’s daughters will calve at three years of age, given they calved as first-calf heifers The stayability (ST) EPDs represents the genetic difference, in terms of percent probability, that a bull’s daughters will stay productive within a herd to at least six years of age. $Cow incorporates other traits that affect the profitability of a female in a production system. These traits include milk, calving ease, moderate mature weight and the ability of calves to gain. A female’s genetics also influence the performance of her calves in the feedlot and at slaughter so traits such as feed efficiency and carcass value are also included in $Cow. Table 1. By selecting on $Cow, cattle producers will make genetic improvement on economically relevant traits leading to improved maternal productivity.
Susan Willmon, director of breed improvement with the American Gelbvieh Association stated, “We continue to work with AGA members and commercial producers to create genetic tools that have economic relevance. $Cow will help producers to select more productive females to maximize profitability through their maternal genetics.” An example of $Cow can be used to identify superior sires for genetic improvement is presented in the table 1. Bull A has a $Cow of $125.90, while Bull B has a $Cow of $95.94. There is a $29.96 difference in the value of their index, which means that Bull A’s daughters have a $29.96 per head per year increase in profit potential when his daughters are retained as replacement females when compared to the daughters kept in the herd sired by Bull B.

Progress Continues to Impact the Beef Business The American Gelbvieh Association Board of Directors is pleased to announce the continued progress being made towards achieving the goals of the AGA’s Impacting the Beef BusinessTM long-range strategic plan. The current status of all the goals and their next steps are presented in the following table for review.
Goal
Current status
Next steps
Heifer pregnancy, 30-month pregnancy, and mature weight “research” EPDs, have been posted on the AGA website. The first research EPDs for udder score have also been produced, however, the number of animals with EPDs is small. The calving interval heritability estimate was also quite low. The marbling EPD target for 60% Choice is .10. Last year (2013) was the first spring breeding season for Gelbvieh and Balancer breeders to make selection decisions since the strategic plan was developed. The new Gelbvieh- and Balancerspecific genomic profile was completed in November 2013 and approved by the Breed Improvement committee in December 2013. An AGA maternal index was completed with the assistance of Dr. Michael MacNeil in September 2013. It was then evaluated by an oversight committee and presented to the Breed Improvement committee in December 2013. The new maternal index called $Cow can be found on the research page of the AGA website. The new feeder profit index (FPI) was approved and launched in April 2014. The general purpose index is on hold.
Calving interval, mature size and udder score will be reevaluated. A major educational effort will be undertaken to gather more exposure, pregnancy, cow weight, and udder score data.
Core Focus: Breed Improvement Develop reliable tools to monitor traits for maternal efficiency. Traits for consideration are: heifer pregnancy, 30-month pregnancy, calving interval, mature size, pounds of calf weaned per cow exposed and udder quality by fall 2013.
Improve purebred Gelbvieh average marbling to 60% Choice.
Implement GE EPDs by summer 2013.
Develop new indexes for maternal selection, feeder calf value and general-purpose.
18 | JULY 2014
The marbling genetic trend will be monitored for improvement. The marbling target for Choice will be updated for Gelbvieh and Balancer animals. AGA’s GE EPDs, were released in January 2014. GE EPDs will be routinely generated with the launch of the new DigitalBeef registry system. $Cow and FPI will be included in the summer 2014 national cattle evaluation (NCE).
Develop feed efficiency EPDs by spring 2013.
Research feed efficiency EPDs developed in collaboration with Colorado State University and several Gelbvieh breeders with multiple years of feed intake data have been upload on the AGA website. The feed intake EPD is included in the maternal index. Provide genetic information for This goal was added during the AGA commercial herds. Board’s April 2014 meeting.
A efficiency profit index (EPI) will continue to be evaluated and a revised index will be released in the summer of 2014.
A tenderness database will be developed during the summer of 2014 with the goal of generating the first tenderness EPDs by late 2014. AGA members may request genetic trends for their herds at any time. There is no charge for this service. A research run of temperament EPDs will occur in late 2014. The first steps will be to evaluate existing foot scoring systems for possible use by AGA members. The first videos and articles will be developed this fall. This will be done through the new DigitalBeef system in 2015.
Core Focus: Breed Promotion Increase promotion reach by 5% per year for the next three years with a focus on promoting Gelbvieh, Balancer and crossbreeding merits to the commercial cow-calf and feedlot sectors. Develop a draft plan for commercial marketing by August 2013.
Promotional reach was expanded by 6% in FY 2013 compared to FY 2012.
The plan has been developed. Implementation is pending launch of the feeder profit calculator (FPC). Increase total AGA membership by New AGA memberships down slightly 2% annually for the next three years for the current fiscal as are total by promoting Gelbvieh and Balancer memberships. to potential new seedstock breeders.
Efforts to continue this trend are ongoing by using allocated resources as effectively as possible.
The FPC is currently on hold.
Promotional efforts targeted at new Gelbvieh breeders will continue.

FEEDER CALF MARKETING Capture Value in Marketing Feeder Calves As the time for marketing feeder calves approaches there are several things to consider when getting ready to sell these calves to ensure the most value is received for them. OVERALL HEALTH OF the animals is very important and documented health protocols are essential to the buyer who is purchasing the feeder cattle. “Documented vaccination protocols deliver buyer confidence in the product they are buying,” says Clint Berry, Allied Genetic Resources, Superior Livestock, when talking about profit drivers from a seller’s standpoint. He also emphasizes that trusted genetics are important for feeder cattle buyers. Having a trusted and reputable seedstock provider is critical to any commercial operation. The genetics that are being purchased from these seedstock producers should be proven in values such as carcass merit, ability to gain and grade. Berry also states, “Reputation of your seedstock provider plays in the reputation of you marketing feeder cattle.” When placed in a feed yard, it is essential that cattle are healthy, grow quickly and grade well. When marketing feeder cattle it is important that these things are emphasized and appealing to buyers. “Most of the grids are driven by grade, more than they are other factors and quality grade matters a lot in terms of getting premiums on the grid,” says Tom Brink, former senior vice president and chief risk officer of JBSFive Rivers Cattle Company. According to Dan Dorn of Decatur County Feed Yard, the major profit drivers of a feed yard are feed efficiency, carcass merit and carcass weight. Regardless of who is going to be feeding out the calves, downstream value should be created, starting with quality cow herd genetics that incorporate these traits. Decatur County Feed Yard has seen up to a $300 difference in feeder value for cattle that have more profitable genetics. Once buyers see how calves perform year after year they will be more aggressive in buying the calves, if they 22 | JULY 2014
performed well. Berry describes that through building a reputation in the marketplace, and developing cattle that consistently perform, buyers will be enticed to compete for these calves and push them to the top of the market or higher. “Heterosis is key,” says Dorn, “You see so much better performance on the cattle, you see better grade typically, more muscle, feed efficiency is better, and so it hits all of the profit drivers.” Heterosis is the increased performance of the offspring when crossing two different breeds. This offers several advantages in a commercial setting, such as superiority in traits important to cattle feeding profitability, when compared to purebred animals. These crossbred cattle drive profit through efficiency, grade and gain. This value can easily be added by using Gelbvieh or Balancer® genetics in a crossbreeding system.
Once buyers see how calves perform year after year they will be more aggressive in buying the calves, if they performed well.
Participating in programs such as source verified and natural can also help capture a premium when selling feeder calves. “Do as many of the programs as you feel you can and make it work. The more you do the more you are going to get out them,” says Jerry Warren, Superior Livestock Representative. “Programs help identify the value of cattle,” which in the end is how profit is made. Warren also suggests joining together with neighbors to put together a load of cattle that are similar in size and age. This can help to make feeder calves more appealing to a larger number of buyers. Visit the American Gelbvieh Association website at www.gelbvieh.org to see how crossbreeding can work for you and for more information about marketing feeder calves, or contact AGA representative Frank Padilla at 303-465-2333. MANAGEMENT Body Condition Scoring Your Beef Cow Herd Body condition scores (BCS) describe the relative fatness or body condition of a cow herd through the use of a nine-point scale. A body condition score five (BCS 5) cow is in average flesh and represents a logical target for most cow herds. A BCS 1 cow is extremely thin while a BCS 9 cow is extremely fat and obese. By Dr. Rick Rasby BODY CONDITION SCORE (BCS) of beef cows at the time of calving has the greatest impact on subsequent rebreeding performance (Table 1). The postpartum interval is the length of time from calving to first estrus (heat) after calving. For a cow to maintain a 365-day calving interval, she must rebreed by 82 days after calving (283 day gestation + 82 day postpartum interval = 365 days). On the average, cows that calve in a BCS 3 or 4 have difficulty exhibiting their first heat by 80 days after calving. Whereas cows that calve in BCS 5 or
6 tend to exhibit heat by 55 days after calving and; therefore, have a better opportunity to maintain a 365 day calving interval. Although cows that calve in a BCS of 7 have a short postpartum interval, it is not economical to feed cows to a condition score of 7.
Thin cows at calving (BCS 4 or thinner) produce less colostrum, give birth to less vigorous calves that are slower to stand and these calves have lower immunoglobulin levels (Figure 1), thus impairing their ability to overcome early calf-hood disease challenges. This illustrates the importance of targeting mature cows to calve in a BCS of at least 5. Because first-calf-heifers have only reached about 85 percent of their mature weight after calving and require additional nutrients to support growth, they need to be fed so they are a BCS of 6 at calving.
The look and feel of body condition scoring Body condition scoring can be done using only visual indicators or a combination of visual and palpation of key bone structures for fat cover. Palpation can be done during routine processing of cows through a chute. The key areas for evaluation are the backbone, ribs, hips, pinbones, tailhead, and brisket. Palpating cows for fatness along the backbone, ribs, and tailhead will help refine your skill to visually access body condition. If body condition scoring is new to you, just focus on separating cows into thin, moderate, and fat groups without worrying about the numerical score. With experience, you will connect the ‘’look and feel’’ of your cows to a body condition score that you can consistently determine.
Table 1. Body Condition Score Pre-calving and impact on days from calving to estrus (post-partum interval, PPI). Houghton et.al., 1990. Effects of body composition, pre- and postpartum energy level and early weaning on reproductive performance of beef cows and preweaning calf gain. 24 | JULY 2014
Body condition scores should be recorded so that links to productivity and herd management (particularly nutritional management) can be examined. Several years of such information could reveal, for example, needed management changes for a given age group (i.e., thin three-year-olds) of cows or might identify a sire group of females that simply didn’t fit your resources. When visually scoring body condition, you must “look through the hair coat”. Sometimes this is difficult due to

a long winter hair coat. It is good training to re-evaluate your body condition scores when cattle are wet. You may be surprised at the impact hair coats can have on visual scores. Long, thick winter hair coats are obviously highly desirable (at least in the Northern Plains), thus actual palpation for fatness of cows may be the best choice to produce consistent body condition scoring. Drawings of cows in BCS 1 to 9 can give an indication of how these cows would look if they were without hair. Other factors in addition to hair coat that can affect visual body condition scores are age of cow, rumen fill, and stage of pregnancy. The goal of body condition scoring is to evaluate fatness independent of these factors. At first, one or more of the above factors may mislead you, but careful study of your herd through the production year will sharpen your focus so that body condition can be scored independent of the above factors. The same techniques are used to condition score cattle that have Bos indicus genetics. Depending on the percentage of Bos indicus genetics, the skin appears to be wrinkled or folded. Determine degree of condition at the same locations and assign a score based on the 1 to 9 scale.

When to condition score cows The greatest single factor influencing rebreeding performance of beef cows is body condition at calving, especially for spring-calving females. However, if producers wait until calving to manage body condition of their cows, they will find it very difficult and expensive to increase the body condition of a lactating cow. Although evaluation of body condition can be looked at as an ongoing process, there are several key times when body condition scoring should be considered: Late summer - early fall This is an important time to condition score cows in drought years or in systems where females are managed almost entirely on vegetative or dormant grazed forage. If cows are thin, early weaning should be considered. Nonlactating cows may pick-up condition by grazing forage alone or by feeding a small amount of supplement along with the grazed forage. If young cows are thin and grass in the pasture is decreasing in nutrient quality, strategically wean calves. Weaning time Pay particular attention to young cows weaning their first calves, as they are most likely to be thin at this time.
For young cows, you may need to consider early weaning calves and giving cows access to higher quality forage. 45 days after weaning This will give you a good idea how fast cows are “bouncing back” after weaning. Thin cows should be gaining back condition if cow type is matched with the feed resources. 90 days before calving This is the last opportunity to get condition back on cows economically. This would be the time to separate thin cows from cows in good condition.
Where PASSION
meets PRODUCTION BEA Passion 001X ET
Calving time If cows are thin, producers may want to change the pre-calving feeding program. Because of the nutritional demands of lactation, it is difficult to get cows to condition economically after calving. Beginning of breeding season Thin cows at this time may indicate a poor match of calving season to feed sources. Maybe calving occurs too early in the spring. The period from weaning to 90 days pre-calving is the best time to get serious about body condition scoring and planning the nutrition/ management program because the manager’s strategy can have great impact. The period from calving to rebreeding may help explain the productivity (or lack thereof!) but it is likely too late to have much impact on herd productivity and profitability at this point. If cows are thin management options include early weaning when the youngest calf is 45 days old or 48 hour calf separation. Both of these management techniques will help initiate estrous cycles in beef cows. FFF

Gelbvieh and Balancer® EPD Genetic Trends The core strategy of the breed improvement goals of the American Gelbvieh Association’s Impacting the Beef BusinessTM long-range strategic plan is to “Own maternal and stay between the guardrails for all other traits.” Part of being able to stay between those guardrails is to monitor current EPD genetic trends. The graphs below illustrate the genetic trends for Gelbvieh and Balancer® animals based off the January 2014 national cattle evaluation. Breed averages from January 2014 are also presented for reference.

Building a Legacy through the American Gelbvieh Foundation The American Gelbvieh Foundation is dedicated to Gelbvieh genetics, merit advancement, and strengthening the breed influence within the changing beef industry. This will be accomplished through breed promotion, growing demand for Gelbvieh genetics, member education, research and junior support. By Megan Slater
What is the American Gelbvieh Foundation? The American Gelbvieh Foundation is a separate nonprofit corporation from the American Gelbvieh Association, which was formed by the Board of Directors in 1991. Its purpose is to raise funds through charitable donation for the purpose of education, research and scholarship. The Foundation is governed by a Board of Directors and in a recent change is a separate Board of the Directors than that of the American Gelbvieh Association Even before the Foundation was started, the passion for giving to the Gelbvieh Association has been

strong and all started with a cowboy hat. Today that cowboy hat is a reminder of the earlier years when the Gelbvieh Association’s fate was uncertain and the perseverance it took to get it where it is today. Today that passion continues with commitments from all AGA Board members to support the AGF and these commitments were inspired by Past AGA President and current member of the AGF Board
Mark Goes, who has committed a $100,000 life insurance policy to the Foundation and is now part of the American Gelbvieh Foundation Legacy Society. “In order to create sustainability for the AGA, it becomes the responsibility of every AGA member to contribute to their foundation,” says Goes.
What does the Foundation do? The Foundation supports the AGA through funds that are donated for the purpose of education and research. These funds
help to ensure advancement of the breed well into the future. “The AGF is vital to long term viability of the AGA. The AGA is in need of funds for research and education,” said Al Knapp, AGF Board Member. This education and research will help to maintain the breed’s relevance in the beef industry for years to come.
made the goal to double the Foundation’s assets by 2015 and the ultimate goal is to raise $1 million to ensure the future of AGA and the Gelbvieh breed.
A strong Foundation is essential in order to keep the breed strong in the future and help to make an even larger impact on the beef industry. In “In order to remain viable addition to education and research we need to continue to educate, the AGF also awards scholarships continue to promote and continue to members of the American to do research. Foundation? AGA’s Impacting the Beef BusinessTM long-range strategic plan
AGF funded the AGA’s research and development of the $Cow maternal index. This selection index was developed with the help of Dr. Mike MacNeil, PhD., of Delta G, and will help Gelbvieh and Balancer breeders select for economically relevant maternal traits and productivity. This index includes the 30-month pregnancy (Pg30) EPD which is exclusive to the AGA’s $Cow index. At the end of the day this EPD was created to help increase profitability in a production setting and helps to further the advancement of the Gelbvieh breed. The projects that the Foundation has funded in recent years at the AGA have resulted in great improvements for the breed. With the help of AGA members this research and breed improvement can take Gelbvieh to the next level and continue to make a significant impact on the agriculture industry in the future.

How can you help? If you would like to contribute to the AGF, there are several easy ways for members to do so. Contributions can be made through gifts of grain, gifts of livestock, and the Legacy Society. All methods of giving are tax deductible. Through gifts of grain many different types of grain may be given, including corn, soybeans, wheat, sorghum and others. Tax savings can be seen by donating grain directly to a charitable organization. The proceeds of the grain that is given to the organization are not recognized as taxable income for the producer, and costs associated with growing the crop are also tax deductible. The AGF Board is currently developing strategies to raise funds to build an endowment for the Foundation. Their objective is to establish and grow a funding source that will provide financial support of AGA in perpetuity.
“Any contribution, no matter how small, is valued and appreciated but there still remains an urgent demand to raise the holdings of the AGF to levels that can support the future research, education and youth involvement that will secure a role for Gelbvieh in the cattle industry,” says Goes. Collaboration – It Impacts the Beef Business Teams that work collaboratively can obtain greater resources, recognition, and reward when facing competition for finite resources. Everyone has to pull their weight. By Frank Padilla COLLABORATION, AS DEFINED by Wikipedia, is working with each other to do a task and to achieve shared goals. It is a recursive process where two or more people or organizations work together to realize shared goals. This is more than the intersection of common goals seen in cooperative ventures, but a deep, collective, and conscious determination to reach an identical objective. Due to the complexity of today’s business environment, collaboration in technology
encompasses a broad range of tools that enable groups of people to work together including social networking, instant messaging, web sharing, audio conferencing, and video chatting. Broadly defined, any technology that facilitates linking of two or more humans together can be considered a collaborative tool. The cattle business is a collaborative effort. It is seedstock producers, commercial cattlemen, feed yards, packers, and retailors coming together to bring a safe, healthy, consistent, quality product to the consumer. It is genomic

International Genetic Solutions. Four other breed associations are doing due diligence in looking at becoming partners in this collaborative entity. This industryleading partnership has made IGS the largest and most powerful multi-breed genetic evaluation in the world with over 11.9 million total records, 325,000 annual records, and now more than 30,000 genotypes. This has created the strongest scientific collaboration ever seen in the beef industry. Rob Arnold, president of the AGA Board of Directors recently wrote, “We operate in a very dynamic business. It’s up to us to keep pace if we are going to remain relevant in the beef business. We could probably sit and debate all day long whether change is good or
bad, but the real question is, are we making progress?” Through collaboration progress has been made. Gelbvieh and Balancer® EPDs are now directly comparable to Red Angus and Simmental for growth and carcass traits, simplifying breeding decisions for commercial producers. Heifer pregnancy and 30-month pregnancy EPD prototypes were completed and resulted in the $Cow research index, enabling members to define a cow’s contribution to the system as a whole. The first production run of the AGA efficiency profit index (EPI) is available and allows members and commercial producers to select for feed efficiency in their herds. The prototype for a mature weight EPD was developed enabling

producers to monitor mature cow size. The completion of the Genomic Pioneers research project led to the unveiling of research mode genomic-enhanced EPDs. Expansion in breed promotion was seen with significant increases to the circulation of Gelbvieh World and The Profit Picture, as well as the “Add Pounds. Add Profit.” insert. AGA website visits and YouTube views have also dramatically increased. The Gelbvieh breed has built a successful track record for one reason: no other breed in the U.S. cattle industry is as commercially focused as Gelbvieh. We’ve consistently been focused on satisfying the demands not only of consumers, but also of commercial cattle producers. Second, we’ve produced cattle that are troublefree, that enable commercial producers to raise more pounds with fewer inputs. Gelbvieh has come to represent a reliable source for heterosis – the lifeblood of every cow-calf operation. Through increased hybrid vigor from Gelbvieh and Balancer genetics our commercial customers have increased cow longevity, herd health, and overall performance. As we look to the future – and as each of us contemplates the successes and setbacks of the last 42 years – we must never forget that it’s the commercial producer that built this breed, and it’s the commercial producer who will continue to play the most critical role in our future. However, the opportunities that at present lie on the horizon are only as good as our preparation to capitalize on them. FFF

The GPA program is unique within the seedstock industry and provides a tool for Gelbvieh producers, both small and large, to be recognized on records kept and data recorded in the previous calendar year. “Participating members use the GPA program as a way to enhance customer experience as they provide a value-added service with the data they collect from their breeding program,” said Susan Willmon, American Gelbvieh Association director of breed improvement. To attain GPA status, the AGA member must record performance data, use sires that meet or exceed established performance criteria, and implement technologies such as DNA testing, ultrasound, and A.I. in their programs. Congratulations to this year’s award winners.

DIGITALBEEF
New Season, New Tools – The AGA Transition to DigitalBeef Technology The American Gelbvieh Association is excited to announce the transition to DigitalBeef, a new computer registry system with tremendous benefits to members. By Kari White NEW CALVES, NEW grass, new breeding plans; spring and summer are seasons of change for everyone. The American Gelbvieh Association is growing and changing as well. New staff members, new genetic evaluation tools, and new member programs make this an exciting time at the AGA. The list of changes at the AGA requires a registry system that will grow and change also, which is the reason behind the transition to DigitalBeef technology in the summer of 2014. How can breeders benefit from the transition to a new registry system? The main goal for the transfer to DigitalBeef is to make it easier for members to manage and register their herds. Instead of just being a way to register cattle, the new AGA registry system includes many tools that are traditionally included in herd management software. DigitalBeef software allows animals in a herd to be sorted by yearling group, weaning group, pre-weaning group, and animals for sale. The software also allows the breeder to assign animals to a pasture and manage rotations, which makes it much easier to record the exposure data necessary to compute heifer pregnancy and 30-month pregnancy EPDs. Custom reports are available to the producer for management of herd data. Calving history, dam production summaries, weaning and ultrasound worksheets, and EPD and performance genetic trends are all examples of reports producers can access to make information more available. Breeders also have the ability to compare the difference in expected progeny performance of different bulls mated to the same female, making breeding decisions more informed and precise. 42 | JULY 2014
The DigitalBeef transition will make member communication with the AGA more efficient. Instead of filling out online forms, ordering DNA testing on an animal can be done right out of the registry by going to the animal record. Information including registration number, member number, and address will be entered automatically, lessening the chance of confusion and error at the lab. Members will have the ability to check for parent verification themselves, if parentage markers of all interested animals are on file. Transferring and disposing of animals can also be done quickly in the animal record.
We are constantly striving to be innovative and user friendly for our members, and we believe this transition will achieve both those goals.
Finally, the DigitalBeef system will facilitate communication between members. AGA members or animals can be found by ranch, EPD, name, or registration number. Breeders are also listed visually by map location that can be sorted by state or city. A marketplace is available where breeders can post bulls, females, embryos, or semen for sale in their herd just by designating it in the animal record in the registry. Transitioning to the DigitalBeef system is a welcome and anticipated change by the AGA staff and Board of Directors. We are constantly striving to be innovative and user friendly for our members, and we believe this transition will achieve both those goals. More information about the DigitalBeef transition will be made available on our website at Gelbvieh.org as it becomes available. The AGA looks forward to transitioning to DigitalBeef by the end of the summer. FFF

That’s Nice – But I Raise Cows I am somewhat disappointed that we are continually revisiting the topic of crossbreeding in commercial beef production—and actually debating the merits of the practice. Crossbreeding is not a new concept. Unfortunately, it seems that this topic continues to fester, simply because we refuse to look at the issue objectively. By Dave Daley
THE INHERENT PROBLEM with the discussion is we have proponents and opponents rather than a simple discussion of advantages and disadvantages— where it fits and where it doesn’t. We can have outstanding straightbred or crossbred cattle. I find it simplistic and a waste of time to argue one is better than the other. We need to put our resources and energy into a more productive direction. As scientists, breed associations and beef producers, we should take a 44 | JULY 2014
step back and approach the issue rationally. It seems to me we have three failures in this discussion: 1) a failure to actually understand what heterosis means, 2) a focus on the wrong traits to evaluate the impact of crossbreeding (we are chasing a red herring), and 3) a lack of understanding of the impact of environment on crossbreeding results. What are the genetic results of crossbreeding? Hybrid vigor or heterosis—we all know the
answer. However, based on what I see in the popular press, we may know the answer but we fail to understand the definition. Heterosis is the improvement in the crossbred progeny compared to the AVERAGE OF THE PARENTAL BREEDS. Proponents and opponents of crossbreeding alike— please take note—NO ONE SAID THE CROSSBRED PROGENY WERE SUPERIOR TO EITHER STRAIGHTBRED PARENT—JUST TO THE AVERAGE OF THE PARENTAL BREEDS. So, if we cross Holstein and Hereford, the progeny don’t out milk Holstein! Heterosis is the improvement above the mean of the two parental breeds. This lack of understanding of hybrid vigor was driven home to me clearly on a visit to Queensland in Bos indicus country. One particular producer who raised straightbred Brahmans seemed
delighted to show me crossbred animals that he had tried in his environment that looked absolutely miserable. His not so subtle point— crossbreeding doesn’t work. “See, my Brahmans are better than the crossbreds!” That view represents a lack of understanding of heterosis. The fact that the Bos indicus cattle are better adapted to that climate doesn’t mean that crossbreeding failed. Heterosis, by definition (and in practice) would be the improvement in adaptability of the F1 (in this case Brahman X Angus) over the mean of the two breeds— not over Brahmans. The biology of crossbreeding is clear and can’t be changed regardless of the dialogue that occurs. The elegant research at the USMARC on germplasm evaluation will never be duplicated. The sheer numbers, classic design and life cycle analysis should provide irrefutable evidence of the impact of planned crossbreeding. I am always amazed at how people want to disagree with the data
from USMARC. That usually occurs if we don’t like the results. Careful study of the data will demonstrate what we know to be true with crossbreeding—small, net improvement in many traits, but a large increase in lifetime productivity, particularly when you evaluate longevity (Table 1.). One thing that has changed since the completion of the life cycle
analysis of germplasm evaluation and utilization at MARC is that our selection tools have improved. In particular, the advances in EPD technology (accuracy, numbers, techniques) have changed dramatically—and that doesn’t even include the recent additions of genomics to the mix. So, clearly, we can change things like growth rate, feed efficiency and carcass merit more accurately and faster within

a breed than ever before. Does that mean crossbreeding is less valuable? No. You shouldn’t be using crossbreeding to change growth rate, feed efficiency and carcass merit anyway. Those are highly heritable, easily measured traits that we have excellent tools available. That’s not why you crossbreed!

Crossbreeding reduces inputs while increasing outputs. That adds value to my particular system.
So, that’s nice, but I own cows. I have the unique opportunity to practice what I preach. I run both crossbred and purebred programs in similar, somewhat challenging environments. I could care less about weaning weight, quality grade or feedlot performance as a single measurement taken out of context. By necessity, I am interested in the bottom line, long-term profitability. That includes looking at the entire system— labor, feed costs, replacement costs—every input and output that affects my return. Crossbreeding reduces inputs while increasing outputs. That adds value to my particular system.

crossbreeding primarily centered on the concepts of consistency and marketability.
Crossbreeding – Back to the Future Four years ago I was invited to address BIF regarding heterosis and how we have either ignored or forgotten the value of systematic crossbreeding to improve profitability in beef cattle production systems. By Dave Daley IN THE INTERIM period since that presentation, I am even more convinced that this incredible genetic resource has been under-utilized and devalued.
At a time when all of our input costs have increased dramatically and the value of cow efficiency is paramount, we continue to find arguments against using

Clearly, there are specific instances in the commercial cattle sector where heterosis has been effectively used. I would argue, however, that the potential is far from realized. In fact, in the past few years, we seem to have drifted away from crossbreeding to more traditional straightbred programs that intend to focus on phenotypic consistency and end product, but not necessarily on profitability. Is there a rational explanation for our unwillingness to take advantage of a proven technique to enhance economic return? In my previous paper I outlined the “top ten” reasons that we have failed to capitalize on this important genetic attribute:
1. A cultural bias that clearly reflects “purebreds” are better! If for no other reason than they have a registration paper. Society, at many levels, rewards purity. Is your dog registered? Does your quarter horse gelding have papers? How far can you trace your ancestry? Please don’t misunderstand---there is certainly value associated with that record, particularly our ability to track performance and predict genetic potential of purebreds. But being purebred should not be a presumption of superiority.
2. Our predilection for single trait selection focusing on “bigger is better.” The beef cattle
industry seems to choose a trait of importance and then put an inordinate amount of pressure on that trait, ignoring genetic

antagonisms. If a 90 pound yearling EPD is good, 100 must be better! It is intuitive! We have already done frame, growth (weight of all kinds), milk, and carcass traits (both ribeye and marbling). I sometimes have to ask myself, “So what is the trait of the year this time?” It is akin to the “flavor of the month” at the local ice cream shop. And because often have chosen relatively highly heritable traits, we have not needed to crossbreed to achieve those goals. The subtle, and cumulative improvement that heterosis provides does not lend itself to maximums.
3. We have decided that measuring outputs is more meaningful than measuring inputs, as well as easier to do. It is
certainly easier to measure calf performance on an individual basis, rather than all costs associated with that production. “I can weigh them at weaning quicker than I can determine differences in treatment costs over time.”
4. Uniform phenotypes for qualitative traits (color) have a distinct and real marketing advantage that is difficult to ignore. That does not mean you cannot have
uniformity of color within a crossbreeding program, but the widespread and indiscriminate planning (or lack thereof) of many crossbreeding programs certainly gave us some interesting marketing challenges. Generally, it is easier to produce a uniform color in straightbred programs.
5. Heterosis is very difficult to visualize and even more difficult to measure. Because

heterosis is expressed as a small net positive in many traits we do not know it when we see it. Slight changes in morbidity, age at puberty, conception rate and significant changes in longevity are not easily observed. However, we all know when calves gain faster in the feedlot.
6. The presentation of complicated crossbreeding systems as a “normal practice” to diverse cattle operations, especially the countless small beef herds in the United States. Many of the systems that
we teach as part of standard animal breeding or beef production courses have very limited application in the real world. Most beef herds are too small to implement the “standard systems.”

7. Our penchant for telling people how to modify their environment in order to “get heavier calves, higher percent calf crop and more total pounds,” rather than how to
increase net return. How many new supplementation programs can you develop in order to get your heifers bred or wean bigger calves? In fact, we can recommend programs for non-cycling females…..you just have to pay for it and then pass those genetics to the next generation! Heterosis provides some improvement in traits at relatively little cost. However, we have obscured the opportunity for producers to focus on those

9. Inappropriate use of breed diversity. Nothing
undermines crossbreeding more quickly than the unplanned “Heinz 57” or “Breed of the Month Club” approach. For those who were willing to experiment in crossbreeding, there was often very poor planning of the combination of breeds and the selection within those breeds.
10. Our industry and university systems have focused on individual trait measurement for over 50 years. We have done
a very poor job of incorporating real world economics into our models. We have EPDs for a plethora of traits ….and we are adding more! Economic indexes are starting to catch up, but we are still behind. Has anyone thought about measuring return per acre or return on investment? We have had a disconnect between agricultural economists and animal science that has not been well bridged. We tend to think lineally rather than laterally, which has reduced the application of innovative crossbreeding. As I review this list, I am convinced that the primary drawback (among all of the others),

is #3…the focus on measuring outputs rather than inputs. With a few notable exceptions, all of the individual animal traits we measure reflect “bigger, faster, more.” And certainly, the glamour traits of yearling weight, ribeye area, and marbling---have accelerated at a rapid pace. You can make very rapid genetic progress in these highly heritable traits by direct selection within a breed. Therefore, many people fail to see the value of crossbreeding. The value in crossbreeding is often underestimated because it has a small positive effect on many different traits that are lowly heritable and difficult to measure. Frequently, maternal heterosis (the value of the crossbred cow) is about decreasing inputs as much as it is about increasing output. For example, longevity, livability and disease resistance are traits

that impact the input side of the equation as much as the output. Our industry has been on a mission to improve product quality and quantity, focusing on carcass traits. We finally were paying attention to our consumers---a good thing! Unfortunately, that effort has been on a per animal basis rather than per unit of input. Do we ever ask ourselves how our long term selection programs affect the profitability of commercial producers? In academia, it seems that we tend to want to make the simple complex. The commercial beef business is faced with a very difficult challenge to maintain long-term profitability and viability. There are countless battles (unrelated to cattle breeding) in order to survive and be profitable in the long-term. We need to keep cattle breeding simple. We have

wonderful within breed selection tools (EPDs). We have the ability to capitalize on breed differences and capture both heterosis and breed complementarity through crossbreeding. Designing simple, long-term breeding programs to capture direct and maternal heterosis, while capitalizing on maternal and terminal lines, is a significant step in attempting to maximize sustained profit. Editor’s note: Due to the quality of these crossbreeding articles and the impact of crossbreeding on the beef business, we are reprinting them from the February issue of The Profit Picture.

A CHICKEN AND a pig were walking down the road together discussing their purpose in life. They passed a sign for a local diner advertising its breakfast special: “Ham and Eggs – $5.95!” The chicken said, “Because of the chickens’ dedication to society they
Many are probably most familiar with the concept of talent, which refers to a person’s natural ability to do something. For example, some people are just naturally better than others at sports, while others may have a ‘knack’ for languages or math. Talent is something you are born with. While you can work hard to improve your skill, there is nothing you can do about your natural talent or ability.

Talent verses determination
Determination is your willpower or resolve to accomplish a particular goal. It refers to how badly you want the goal, and what you are willing to sacrifice to get it. In the big picture, talent is not an indication of future success. Determination is the Cinderella of the success story – it is easy to overlook. And yet determined people will succeed where even the most talented people have failed. In other words, if you want to succeed, don’t worry about natural talent; you cannot do anything about it. Talent is not a good indication of whether or not anyone will succeed anyway. Focus all of your energy on your determination, which will consistently take you to greater and greater skills and give you the ability to overcome challenges that would make even

the most talented individuals give up and quit out of frustration. Determination and commitment are synonymous. Commitment means doing what needs to be done regardless of your talent, your mood, or external circumstances to accomplish your goals.
Commitment to your cow-calf program Are you truly committed to the success and profitability of your commercial cow-calf program? To be totally committed you have to make the success of your program your top priority, no excuses. It starts with investing in genetics that will move your program forward. Genetic selection is one of the most important factors
that will determine your success or failure. Use the tools available to you and consider EPDs and carcass information when making your selection decisions. The right sires, be it natural or A.I., will add pounds to your calf crop and leave fertile, productive replacement females that will remain in the cow herd for years to come. A dedicated cattleman will say I can’t afford to spend that kind of money on a bull. He will also say I can’t A.I. my cows because I don’t have the time or it costs too much. A committed cattleman will not settle for less than the best bulls they can find and are willing to invest in the future of their program, no excuses.
Commitment to a profitable seedstock operation Are you truly committed to the success and profitability of your seedstock operation? To be successful as a seedstock producer there are three basic areas you need to concentrate on to be successful and you have to be committed to all three. They are genetic selection, marketing, and customer service. It is your responsibility to provide the commercial producer with the genetics that will lead to their success. If you can’t, someone else will. Are you willing to promote your program? So many times determined producers, who do a great job in genetic selection and

committed to breed improvement. In the past decade, Gelbvieh and Balancer® cattle have reduced birth weight, and increased weaning and yearling weight, while at the same time reducing mature cow weight and improving carcass quality. Reducing birth weight and increasing performance are usually antagonistic traits. It has taken a huge commitment on the part of the Gelbvieh and Balancer breeders to identify and select for cattle that are born small and that will still add pounds to a weaned calf. As well, Gelbvieh and Balancer cattle today have more performance with a moderate mature cow size. The Gelbvieh cow is now the most moderate in mature size when compared to many other breeds, according to Meat Animal Research Center data. We have seen an industry that now demands feeder cattle that will yield heaver carcasses and reach quality grade targets, and do so efficiently throughout all stages of beef production. With the continuingly increasing feed and land costs, the U.S. cow-calf producer must have the most efficient cows to remain profitable. The AGA and its members are committed to continuing to improve our cattle to fit the needs of a changing world, no excuses. FFF

JUNIOR VOICE
Achieving Success through AGJA The people involved in the AGJA are beyond impressive and are individuals that I aspire to be like. I am proud to be a part of this organization and I hope everyone has a great summer and is safe in all your travels. By Justin Vehige I HOPE EVERYONE had a great school year! For some of you it’s time to prepare for the next step, whether that is high school, college, or entering the work force. I congratulate all who have received honors within their schools, for whatever activities you have been involved in. There has been a major change in the junior association. Our Junior Advisor Dana Stewart resigned to be a full-time mom and I would like to take this opportunity to give her a huge thank you for all she has done for not only me and my family, but for our whole association. As we turn over a new
leaf, I would like to say thank you to Carrie Tilghman from Kentucky for following in her footsteps. For those who know her, she needs no introduction to our breed for her time and success as a junior member and former intern. She will do a wonderful job! I’m sure everyone is getting geared up for the junior national show. The host committee in South Dakota has a great week planned. I would like to give them a big thank you for the hard work it has taken to plan this event! Good luck to all the members! American Gelbvieh Association Committees The American Gelbvieh Association is fortunate to have an active committee structure. The nine AGA committees play a vital role in the development and implementation of AGA programs, services and policies. An active committee process is one of the core grassroots values of the AGA. Members are appointed to serve on these committees by AGA President Rob Arnold, through expressed interest by members, staff recommendations, and Board of Directors approval. The following is the list of AGA members who have been nominated to serve on the committees. Committee appointments are effective through April 1, 2015. Individuals who are unable to serve on their appointed committee are asked to contact the committees’ staff liaison. Thank you in advance to these members for their service on the committees and their dedication to the American Gelbvieh Association. The AGA committee meetings are held via web-meeting and tele-conference throughout the year and are open to all AGA members. Any member in attendance at a properly convened AGA committee meeting may participate in the discussion of the committee and offer motions for approval, even though they are not an official member of the committee.

What activities do you do?
What types of fundraisers do you do?
Christy: One of our activities is our state show held every summer. Right now we share our show with Nebraska. They plan and schedule the show one year and then we plan and run it the next year. We try to do a fun activity during this show, such as bowling, swimming, or barnyard games to get all the kids involved.
Christy: Our fundraiser has been held at our annual state sale in November. Before our senior association’s annual meeting, we conduct a semen auction. We have different packages available for cattlemen to purchase. In the past couple of years we have raised close to $3,000 per year which gives us enough money to fund the next year.
Also, we give an incentive to show at our Kansas Junior Livestock Show in Wichita. Each exhibitor that shows in the show with a Gelbvieh or Balancer® receives $50. We also have a pizza and liquid nitrogen ice cream party, and a time to get together and enjoy each other’s fellowship during this show.
How large is your membership? Christy: We currently have 30 active members in the junior association.
How is the advisor selected? Christy: The advisor(s) position is selected by the senior association.
Do you utilize newsletters, social media, etc., for members to stay in touch? Christy: We try to stay in touch with social media mainly through Facebook. This is the easiest and quickest way for members to get back to me. We also use email and we try to do two mailings per year.
Is there a challenge your association is faced with and how are working to overcome it? Christy: The biggest challenge is communication. It is hard to get information out to everyone, keeping up with addresses, emails, phone numbers, etc. Facebook has been the best and easiest way to get members information quick and to get a response back in ample time.
What is one of your association’s greatest successes?

Christy: I think our association has been successful at our junior national shows. Our members are willing participate and be competitive. I think that our American Gelbvieh Junior Association looks to our older members as the leaders of our organization. This has been evident as many of our members have been elected to serve on the Board and be the leaders of the Board. Our kids work together to make things happen and when asked to step up and be leaders, they rise to the occasion.
What would be your words of advice to other state associations who may not be as active? Christy: It is very helpful to have planned meeting times throughout the course of a year. Set an agenda and take action during the meetings. Set up committees and check back on those committees during the year. Take time to have fun! Make sure to schedule time when members can get together and have a good time visiting about cattle and socializing. Thank you to all of our state association volunteers for your time and effort. FFF

MARKET OUTLET Positive Outlook for Cow-Calf Producers The future in the cattle market has never been better. Increasing consumer demand and greater beef production, despite the lowest cow herd numbers in decades, equals profitability for cattle producers. By Brian Rogers CATTLEFAX CEO RANDY Blach spoke to the American Gelbvieh Association Board of Directors and staff in April. The take home message of his presentation was “the stars are aligned for the industry to expand the cow herd.” There has been a transition in the ranking of beef cow numbers by state in the past few years. The top three states as of January 1, 2014 are as follows: 1.
Texas with 3,910,000 head
2.
Missouri with 1,820,000 head
3.
Oklahoma with 1,805,000 head
In 1976, there were 132 million head of cattle. Today, we have seen those numbers decrease by nearly 32 percent to only 90 million head in 2014. However, U.S. beef producers are increasing production. This is a great accomplishment to beef farmers and ranchers who are
producing more pounds of beef with fewer cows. According to CattleFax, “Growing U.S. consumer demand for ground beef products will lead to the additional grinding of chuck and round cuts. This additional demand will lead to higher end meat values and divert product away from potential global customers.” With the high consumer demand for beef, 18-20 percent of the 2014 fed slaughter will come from dairy. In the past 17 years we saw commercial cow slaughter peek in 2011 with an estimated 6.8 million head slaughtered. Since then, we have seen this drastically reduced and it is predicted to be down to 5.8 million in 2014. The U.S. beef replacement heifers are making a significant come back since a 20-year low in 2011. Replacement heifer numbers are predicted to be at 5.5 million head in 2014. These numbers are directly influenced by the prices from cash markets, the demand for beef, and the recent restocking of herds. The number of beef cow operations has declined 25 percent since 1986. With the beef cow inventory predicted to hit an all-time low within the past 40 years, producers are growing and becoming larger. It is estimated that 38.4 percent of cow-calf operations range in size of 100-499 head. What does this mean for cow-calf producers? It means that herds are increasing in size, there are fewer and fewer producers every year, and we have to become better animal stewards to produce more pounds beef with fewer resources than ever before. Randy Blach said it best when he said “You are not in the cattle business anymore, you are in the protein business now.” We are competing daily with our other agricultural friends that produce other forms of protein, such as pork and poultry. We shouldn’t be scared of what the future holds for us. We should be better prepared and informed producers so we can meet the growing demands for our beef protein. FFF

COMMUNICATION NOTE Social Media in the Beef Industry - How You Can Benefit Today, social media sites are not only used for people to connect with friends and family; they have become a tool for marketing, advertisement and communication for many businesses and those within the beef industry are no exception. By Megan Slater ACCORDING TO SOCIALMEDIATODAY.COM 72 percent of all Internet users are active on social media. These social media sites include Facebook, YouTube, Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest and Google+. Each of these could be utilized by Gelbvieh and Balancer® breeders to help promote an operation as well the breed and beef industry. There is a common misconception that only younger generations use these types of sites to interact. However, statistics show that 60 percent of people between 50 to 60 years old are active on social media, and 43 percent of those who are 65 and older are active on social media. The AGA’s Facebook page sees almost half of its “likes” coming from Facebook users 35 and older, with 25 percent of those “likes” being users 45 and older. Through Facebook and other social media sites, people of all ages can easily be reached anywhere in the world, and with mobile apps, these sites can be easily accessed and updated from anywhere as well. With over 1.5 billion users, Facebook can be a vital tool in any seedstock producer’s communication toolbox and used for many different purposes. Facebook is a good starting point for those who are new to social media due to the ease of using it and the ability to share links on the page. Links such as to the ranch website or YouTube video can be shared on a page with the click of just a few buttons. The National Cattlemen’s Beef Association Young Producer’s Council has put out a set of Social Media Guides. YouTube can be another very important tool and has over one billion monthly active users. Today, several seedstock producers are marketing their cattle through video, and this has proven to be an effective way to do so. EFFICIENCY PROFIT INDEX Gelbvieh Feed Efficiency Index Can Improve Your Profitability Providing the best and most reliable tools for genetic evaluation to Gelbvieh and Balancer® breeders and their commercial customers is a key principle of the American Gelbvieh Association. THE AMERICAN GELBVIEH Association has introduced the efficiency profit index (EPI) index to aid producers in selection for more feed efficient cattle that still have acceptable amounts of gain. The EPI was developed with the assistance of Patrick Doyle, PhD, Chico State University, associate professor in breeding and genetics. By selecting on this index, producers will also be selecting for more profitable cattle as a result of the economic weights in the index. “The greatest potential for improving profitability

in beef production is to improve feed efficiency. We invested in a GrowSafe® system and have tested over 1,500 individual animals for feed efficiency. We are seeing the rewards from selecting feed efficient genetics,” says Vaughn Thorstenson, Lazy TV Ranch, located at Selby, S.D. The EPI provides marginal negative pressure on intake, while keeping gain at a constant value. By selecting on this index, producers will be able to find those animals that gain the same amount as their contemporaries while eating less. Long-time Midland Bull Test consignor Ken Flikkema, Middle Creek Farms, Bozeman, Mont., states, “It’s not about identifying cattle that only eat less, it’s about finding the ones that eat less and gain more. By measuring feed intake of each bull on test, genetics of bulls can be compared for feed efficiency just as they are compared for growth, carcass, and other traits.” The American Gelbvieh Association currently has intake EPDs and the EPI on more than 25,000 Gelbvieh and Balancer animals. “The American Gelbvieh Association has a large data set of intake records thanks to several members installing their own GrowSafe systems. Increasingly, other members are utilizing central testing facilities for the collection of feed efficiency data,” said Susan Willmon, AGA director of breed improvement. “Several Gelbvieh and Balancer sires have over 50 progeny tested across multiple test locations adding to the accuracy and increased reliability of the index and component EPDs. We are excited to see the increased consideration of this economically relevant trait as members and commercial producers select genetics that will influence future generations.” Profitability of animals in the feedlot has been typically based on the income achieved through gain and final weight, minus the cost of gain estimated from feed consumed. While gain and weight could be measured on individual animals, feed costs were attributed to animals equally across a pen. Adding the dry matter intake (DMI) component into the EPI allows for allocation of a lower cost of gain to those animals that are more efficient. Selection for a greater EPI value will result in pressure for lower DMI values, at adequate gains to insure overall profitability. FFF

State and Regional Gelbvieh Association Officers Gelbvieh cattle can be found throughout the United States and across the world. In the U.S., there are 28 state and regional Gelbvieh associations. A state Gelbvieh association is an independent organization and affiliated with the American Gelbvieh Association. Primarily, state associations help increase the demand for Gelbvieh and Balancer速 genetics and foster relationships among seedstock breeders, commercial producers, and allied industry within the state or region. Activities of state associations can include state sponsored Gelbvieh sales, Maternal Edge female sales, field days, tours, meetings, shows, and junior events. Contact the state officers from the association in your state for information on how to join your local Gelbvieh association. As this list changes throughout the year depending on each state association, visit www.gelbvieh.org for the most up-to-date list of state and regional association officers.
