What Makes Us Unique… By Andy LeDoux
W
ithout question the Gelbvieh breed is unique. Unique in a very good way that sets us apart from other breeds at the National Western Stock Show. Every January, breeders from across North America bring their best bulls to compete in both the Gelbvieh and Balancer® Futurities during the National Western Stock Show. Being present during this one single event is like making it to every single bull sale this spring. All of the top-end bulls will be in the spotlight come January, setting the tone for the upcoming breeding and bull sale season.
How does this make the Gelbvieh breed unique during the National Western Stock Show, you ask? This year we will be conducting our 18th Annual Breeder’s Choice Bull Futurity. At almost 20 years running, this speaks volumes of the resilience and durability of Gelbvieh cattle. Acceptance throughout the beef industry by both seedstock and commercial cattlemen is our gauge of ultimate success as breeders. The Gelbvieh breed, to my knowledge, was the first breed that held a futurity in conjunction with the National Western Stock Show. More importantly to note; it is the longest running in the National Western history. That is an accomplishment we can all take pride in and build from. Making these futurities unique is by design. Members judge the entries and ultimately decide the direction of future matings. Today we have the growing luxury of technology that helps in selecting our new genetics. Visual appraisal, individual weights and measurements, as well as genomic testing are all factors that hold weight in determining the next futurity champion. This event strongly impacts our breed’s direction every year. Previous futurity winners have turned out to become very influential A.I. sires and herd bulls. These sires have gone on to impact our breed in multiple ways. Nonetheless, the ability to access these genetics will always be the focus of the progressive members. Because of the escalating success of the American
6 | JANUARY 2016
Gelbvieh Association’s Balancer program, the Balancer Futurity made its debut in 2011. This event is held simultaneously with the Gelbvieh Futurity in Stadium Arena. The futurities are quite possibly the most genuine event in the Gelbvieh breed, as this is the only event that is judged by fellow breeders. These events are opportunities for breeders from around the globe to become involved. There is no greater satisfaction in the seedstock business than gaining the approval of your peers. The life-blood of competition is when the competitors, or breeders in this instance, raise the bar on improving previous generations. The sole purpose of our futurities is not the bright lights or the big checks. There is an underlying benefit to all members; the ability to be in on the ground floor of the freshest genetics that the breed has to offer. This, in turn, offers a distinct advantage in the marketing because the use of these bulls is exclusive to futurity members. Membership in the futurities is open to any member willing to participate. This allows members access to voting for the bulls of their choice and semen packages on the winning bulls. Another bright spot is the scholarships available to our junior members for continuing education. Undoubtedly, we will continue these prestigious events as the beef industry evolves. Gelbvieh and Balancer cattle have come a long way, but most importantly we are here to stay because we are “too legit to quit”. Become involved in these events and help set the course for Gelbvieh and Balancer cattle into the future. In closing, I challenge you to step outside your comfort zone and engage yourself with Gelbvieh. D

Insight: Building a “Beefier” Future By Terisa Abrahams
I
feel privileged to have started working at the American Gelbvieh Association (AGA) during this exciting time. I wanted to work for the AGA because its vision for a grand future is notable. Most importantly, I can see the changes and how they have grown the AGA within the industry. I wanted to be a part of that growth and hopefully my contributions will make it even better. The AGA is “moving at the speed of change”. In the last year the AGA and staff have picked up momentum to build a better future. How are we going to continue on this great path of growth? We are going to continue to get “beefier” by “moving at the speed of change”. Through forward actions and changing the way we think as an association, we have seen tremendous growth this last year. It’s all about growing smart to get “beefier”. What does it mean to grow smart to get “beefier”? A company shouldn’t expand into new business areas just because it has the capability to do so. Just the same, thinking that growth will automatically bring a more profitable situation is not exactly true either. You may grow from 10 to 30 employees and not make any more money while working twice as hard. So, it’s not just about growth. It’s about smart growth. Our focus on building a “beefier” business is to be sure that the implementation of new tools and utilization of smart business practices will offer the same margins and helps us differentiate ourselves from the other breed associations. It’s important to engage the staff and members cooperatively to convey a strong push for growth in our future, which will separate the AGA from the rest. With constant communication throughout all levels, the AGA has become more effective. We have implemented cross team participation in meetings and focus on the sharing of ideas. We can call these “PIE chats” (PIE stands for performance, innovation, and execution). We understand the best way forward in communicating is not only electronically but by picking up the phone or through in-person meetings. This multi-faceted and ongoing communication effort keeps the smart growth goal
8 | JANUARY 2016
thriving. This effort gives everyone an understanding of the goal and a stake in the growth outcome. We have stepped up AGA’s communication, collaboration, and member focus. Growth has been seen by acting our way into new thinking toward a new common goal. The staff has been working together on cross-functional teams which has created better lines of collaboration and communication. Department leaders have become better communicators because they collectively help each other deliver a clear message about the new strategy to their teams. This has allowed for open input and engagement in frank discussions, which opens the path for future growth. What is the common goal that we all share? That goal is to grow a beefier, better future and remain inclusive, efficient, smart and innovative for the Gelbvieh breed. We are reinventing how we work in order to reach new heights. We continue to look to our members. Listening to you helps us see what you need. Our data collection goes further than our Gelbvieh and Balancer® cows. Information, communication and listening will bring about building a better breed association for everyone. So get ready for someone to ask you how the AGA can help you be even better and how can we help you in ways that we don’t know about. AGA’s “Special Forces” teams that lay the foundation for growth into the future are the AGA staff and the AGA Board of Directors. Our AGA Board of Directors directs the vision to which we will grow beefier. The AGA Staff then adds to, acts upon and fulfills the board’s vision and is an integral piece of growing the Association. The AGA staff has over 100 years of industry and AGA experience. This is longer than the AGA has been in business. Our staff takes great pride in working for the AGA. They have a drive and determination that goes far above and beyond. What an inspiring, innovative and incredible place the AGA is! Each staff member has been empowered to be an active hand in developing plans and ideas for growth to implement the best future for the AGA. Recognizing their hard work in the past year, we have seen tremendous improvement in the tools we offer: from the Smart Select Service, Feeder Finder, genomic data and AGA communications. The staff has responded to the calls for action that engage their hearts as well as their minds, as if they’re part of something consequential in making a “beefier” AGA. D

With P Spear Ranch by Angela Vesco
P
Spear Ranch is located in Ree Heights, South Dakota and owned by the Poindexter family since 1952. The third generation of Poindexters is now running the family operation, which includes Jennifer and her brother. Jennifer is also a veterinarian with her practice located on the grounds of P Spear Ranch.
When you are selecting genetics where do you put selection emphasis? “I like bulls that have a balance in their numbers” says Jennifer, “I like the maternal quality of the Gelbvieh cattle and I want the carcass quality as well.” Jennifer also points out that the calves are really hearty, which is very important during South Dakota winters. The steer calves also perform well for them on the rail and the heifermates make great replacement females.
How do you market your cattle? The P Spear Ranch has been marketing their cattle through a non-hormone treated cattle (NHTC) program since 2003. Premiums are given to cattle that have not had any hormones administered in their lifetime. Being involved in the program requires the ranch to go through an annual USDA audit and keep very accurate records of what treatments the cattle have been given and that they have not had any hormones injected or fed. Jennifer says that most of their beef is sold to Europe because the NHTC program fits Europe guidelines. Another benefit of marketing their cattle through the NHTC program is that P Spear Ranch receives carcass data back on their calves. Jennifer said that their most recent data showed their calves graded 8 percent USDA Prime and 90 percent USDA Choice with an USDA Yield Grade 3 average.
What is the 10 year plan for P Spear Ranch?
What does your annual cattle production cycle look like? P Spear Ranch calves in the late spring and wean in the fall. They keep all of their own replacement females. The steer calves are backgrounded until roughly April to approximately 900 – 950 pounds as yearlings.
10 | JANUARY 2016
Perpetual improvement is the focus for the ranch’s future. Jennifer says that she would like to improve fertility and feed efficiency in the cowherd. Also, they would like to do more retained ownership and feed more calves.
What do you think is the biggest disconnect in the beef industry? Since Jennifer is a large animal veterinarian, animal welfare issues can impede on how she works. She says that people outside of agriculture are quick to assume that livestock are mismanaged and are not treated well. She says she gets frustrated with these issues because she really is doing everything she can to improve the wellbeing of the animal, and people misinterpret it.
knowing it had worked for them. Therefore, her clients have coined the phrase, ‘The Poindexter Protocol’. ‘The Poindexter Protocol’ shows that the Poindexters really care about the health and wellbeing of their animals and have a product that is reliable and honest. D
What is one thing that P Spear Ranch is known for? Jennifer’s veterinary practice has built a trustworthy reputation in South Dakota. When Jennifer recommends a protocol for animal health it has already been tested on her own family’s herd. Jennifer says that she will not recommend a product or management technique without

merican Gelbvieh Association (AGA) members and Gelbvieh and Balancer® stakeholders gathered in Kansas City, Missouri on December 10 through 12, 2015 for the 45th Annual AGA National Convention. The convention, themed “Moving at the Speed of Change”, marked the first standalone convention in recent history for the association. The final count of registered attendees reached 115 traveling from 23 states and two Canadian provinces. Thursday, December 10 kicked off the convention with a number of AGA committee meetings. Member attendance and participation during the committee meetings was vastly improved compared to last year’s teleconference committee meetings. The AGA Annual Meeting was held on Friday. The turnout for the meeting doubled the amount of participation in association business matters when compared with last year’s annual meeting attendance. For that, the AGA staff and AGA Board of Directors would like to commend the AGA membership for their support. The election of five members to the AGA Board of Directors was held during the annual meeting. Producer awards were also given out during the Awards Luncheon on Friday. Scott Hamilton of Hitchcock, South Dakota was named the Commercial Producer of the Year. The Member of the Year award went to Mark Hopfer, Days Creek, Oregon. The AGA also inducted Charles Clark, Keldron, South Dakota, posthumously into its Hall of Fame for 2016. Saturday’s focus was geared towards the commercial sector of the beef industry. The first-ever Cattlemen’s Profit Roundup featured industry-leading speakers participating in two panel sessions during this educational symposium. The first panel discussion was centered on cowherd productivity and efficiency, while the second panel focused on increasing value of cattle throughout the beef supply chain. Again, THANK YOU to all who took the time to attend the 45th Annual AGA National Convention“Moving at the Speed of Change”. The AGA staff has already begun the task of planning for the 46th Annual AGA National Convention and has a goal to continue to improve next year’s convention to make it bigger and better! I Forgot to Genomic Test My Herd Sire. What Now? By Kelli Retallick
T
he new year is now here and with the new year comes change. One of those changes includes the natural service sire rule taking effect on January 1, 2016. It states that all natural service sires (walking sires) must have a Genomic Option #2 (GGP-LD) test on file with the American Gelbvieh Association (AGA) before 2016 progeny can be registered. If a natural service sire is from an external breed association, this bull must have been tested an equivalent low-density genomic test in their native registry and SNP markers must have been reported to the AGA. If no equivalent test is available, parentage markers must be on file with the AGA. If a herd sire has not been tested or one has been accidentally missed, members still have time to get the correct DNA records on files to prevent issues with registering 2016 calves.
order has been placed. • Results will take up to three to four weeks to arrive back from the lab. Please allow yourself enough time, as registrations for 2016 calves cannot be processed until all test results have been received by the AGA. I used an Angus or Red Angus sire and I know I have to get him tested but I heard I should NOT test him through the AGA. How do I test him? You have heard correctly. Angus or Red Angus sires, or any other breed that is NOT Gelbvieh or Balancer, should not be tested through the AGA because the AGA’s panels were trained on Gelbvieh and Balancer® animals only. Testing an external sire through the AGA would give you inaccurate results. Instead, test your external sire with that animal’s registry of origin, as it will give you the full benefits of genomic testing your sire. When testing an external sire, make sure to request the breed association send the SNP (single nucleotide polymorphisms) file to the AGA once the test is complete. Testing Angus sires through the American Angus Association:
I have a Gelbvieh or Balancer® herd sire to get tested yet but I am unsure of what to do.
• Contact the American Angus Association to acquire Angus Genetics, Inc.’s DNA testing form. Ask for someone in the DNA department.
If this is your first time ordering DNA tests on your animals and need help, do not hesitate to call the AGA office or visit AGA’s registry service tutorials for a reference guide. Follow these simple steps in order to test your herd sire.
• After submission form is received, fill out the correct information including name, address, barcode and registration number and then select the GGP LD option. • Send the submission form and physical samples to: AGI 3201 Frederick Ave. Saint Joseph, MO 64506.
• Request a blood or hair sample card from the AGA.
• Results will take at least three to four weeks upon arrival. Request parentage SNPs be sent to the American Gelbvieh Association. This will ensure an easy registration process in the future.
• Collect the DNA sample from your bull. • Log onto your online registry account and select the bull to be tested. • Navigate to your DNA window, “Orders in Queue”, make sure the bull’s information is correct and add the barcode number to the order located on the back or your DNA sample card. • Select the Genomic Option #2 (GGP-LD) option and place order. • Be sure to print off your DNA sample submission form and send it to Geneseek, Inc. along with your DNA sample. • Your account will be automatically billed once your

GW data bulletin continued from page 18 • Results will take at least three to four weeks upon arrival. Request parentage SNPs be sent to the American Gelbvieh Association. This will ensure an easy registration process in the future. Why do we need to request SNP files; what is the difference between a SNP files and parentage markers? A parentage marker file includes only the markers used to test for parentage so fewer markers are included this file. On the contrary, if the SNP file is requested all of the markers resulting from the genomic test will be included; many more markers, including the parentage markers, will be sent to the AGA. Having this file at AGA will give this animal the eventual opportunity to have
genomic-enhanced EPDs in our registry as well as their registry of origin. I got rid of my herd sire before I was able to collect DNA from him. Now what do I do? Do not fret; there is still a way to register 2016 progeny out of this bull. Any 2016-born progeny out of a herd sire which is no longer available for DNA testing must be tested themselves with the Genomic Option #2 (GGP-LD) test. Once the results are received back from the lab the animals will become active in the registry. If you have any more questions about DNA testing your herd sire(s), please do not hesitate to contact the AGA office at 303-465-2333 or via email at dnainfo@gelbvieh.org. D

GW out in the field
Who Knows? By William McIntosh
H
ave you ever heard anyone say, “I bought this set of registered cows and a bull. I got them calved out and weaned. Once they were yearlings people just magically appeared to buy them for more money than I ever hoped”? No, neither have I! Unfortunately, magic doesn’t exist in the seedstock business. On the other hand, have you ever heard someone say, “I hope somebody comes along and buys a few of these bulls soon. I’m getting tired of feeding them”? Yeah, sadly I have, too. Jay Carlton said it best, “HOPE IS NOT A BUSINESS STRATEGY.” The number one key to marketing is very simple; people have to know you have something to sell. All too often breeders do a good job with genetic selection and management but fall short on this very simple point. Here is an example: My wife and I have been looking for a good used ATV for a couple of months now. My uncle, who also is our neighbor, has a really nice John Deere Gator that he uses on his farm. As a matter of fact, realizing how useful his Gator is to him made us want to buy one. I talk to my uncle usually two or three time a week but in all those conversations I never mentioned that my wife and I were looking for an ATV. We went to his house for Thanksgiving and after supper we were talking and he said he had bought a new Gator. I ask about buying his used machine but he had already traded it in on the new one. There are so many lessons in this short story. The two that really stand out to me are, number one, I didn’t know my uncle wanted to sell his gator; and secondly, he didn’t know we were looking for one so he didn’t think to mention it to us. The first lesson is – Everyone in the cattle business should know you have cattle to sell. People are not going to randomly knock on your door and ask if you have cattle they can buy. People will call or come to your farm or ranch to buy your cattle if they know you have cattle for sale. Everyone in a 250 mile radius should know that you have Gelbvieh and/or Balancer® cattle for sale. There are many forms of marketing you can take advantage of depending on your marketing budget. Of course there is print and digital advertising,
22 | JANUARY 2016
radio and social media; just to name a few. All too often I hear, “I don’t have a lot of bulls to sell I can’t afford an elaborate marketing campaign,” and that is a valid point. Marketing can be as simple as putting up flyers at the feed store and sale barn or through postings on Facebook. The goal is to let people know you have a product to sell. Be involved in industry associations and events. This can be one of the most effective marketing activities you can be involved in. Being involved and networking with other cattle producers is a great way to promote your program. The American Gelbvieh Association works hard to promote Gelbvieh and Balancer nationally. Our goal as an association and staff is to create demand for the breed. Yet none of our marketing efforts will positively affect you if no one knows you have cattle for sale. D

Ultrasound Reporting Made Easy How to record and submit data using the AGA Registry By Kari White
A
mong the useful features in the AGA Registry is a simple way to record and submit ultrasound data. In the past, members have had to request ultrasound barnsheets from the association to give their technician for data recording. Members can now pull those sheets themselves by logging in to their member site in the AGA Registry Service.
prefix, tattoo, tag, sex, birthdate, and age in days. There will also be columns to fill in when data is collected including scan date, weight, REA, IMF, FAT, and RUMP.
We encourage breeders to use the Excel format so that data can be submitted to the labs electronically. This prevents the labs from having to key in the information manually, which is time consuming and can lead to human error when it comes to registration numbers and data.
Barnsheets can be downloaded by going to “Ranch/ Person” and then “Reports”. A page of standard reports will come up. Ultrasound worksheets can be downloaded in both Excel and PDF formats. The spreadsheet will automatically populate with animals that are of the correct age for ultrasound data submission (260 to 420 days of age). Data included in the automatic population is registration number,
24 | JANUARY 2016
After data collection, your technician will send the scan data to the lab, who in turn will send the data to the AGA. The office will upload the ultrasound data into the AGA Registry, where it will be added to the individual animal record. Still have questions? Contact the AGA office at 303465-2333, or send an email to info@gelbvieh.org. D

Concerns Regarding Increased Rates of Mortality By Michael Ring
I
t has been mentioned quite often to me that both mortality and veterinary medicine use in feedyards has been increasing at a steady pace in recent history. So, being the statistics nerd that I sometimes am, I dug into some data sets and put together a few examples to try to put this into perspective. In a 2001 paper in the Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association, it was reported that in the period from 1994 to 1999, there was a 38 percent increase in the average death loss in feedyards from 1.03 to 1.42 percent. Another far more in-depth example is found in the summer 2015 issue of the Bovine Practitioners Journal. In a paper by Gary J Vogel, MS, Ph.D., it is concluded that from January 2005 until September 2014, average feedlot mortality rates climbed 27.6 percent in steers (1.34 vs 1.71 percent) and 30.5 percent in heifers (1.41 vs 1.84 percent). These troubling numbers are having a great impact on our industry, to the tune of an estimated $2.35 billion in 2011. This begs the question: With our improved livestock husbandry practices and increased use of technologies, why haven’t we been able to control this growing statistic? Measures to control illness in cattle have also increased dramatically during this time period. According to the
USDA’s NAHMS Feedlot ‘99 study, 10.4 percent of cattle placed in feedyards were administered antimicrobials metaphylactically to prevent Bovine Respiratory Disease (BRD). Metaphylaxis is the use of injectable antibiotics administered to the entire group of cattle upon arrival. In comparison, this number was 21.3 percent for cattle placed in feedyards in 2011. That’s more than doubled in the course of 12 years, while the average price per BRD treatment has increased 87.5 percent from $12.59 to $23.60. So, how are we going to keep more cattle alive? Obviously there isn’t any one answer to this question. Perhaps research toward finding genetic markers for cattle with stronger immune systems or better vaccines and immunostimulants could be explored. As cow-calf producers, we can make an extra effort to get our calves off to a good start from a nutritional standpoint as we progress through this spring’s calving season. We all know colostrum is important; but how much does it really affect them long-term? Receiving high quality colostrum and achieving passive transfer of immunity within the first few hours of life is one of the largest factors in prevention of calf morbidity. In a study done by Louis Perino, DVM, calves with low concentrations of serum Immunoglobulin G (IgG) and plasma protein (PP) due to a failure of passive transfer are up to 10 times more likely to face morbidity before weaning. The calves that experience morbidity during the first 28 days of life can be expected wean 35 pounds lighter than those that maintained a normal state of health. This lack of performance continues later in life, as animals with inadequate PP concentrations can be expected to gain 0.09 pounds per day less and are also at a greater risk of feedyard morbidity. This seems pretty significant to me

BeefTalk: May Calving, January Weaning Changing from March to May Calving is not simple, but it is doable. By Kris Ringwall, Beef Specialist NDSU Extension Service Winter weaning takes place this year at the Dickinson Research Extension Center. This concept is an outcome from the question, “When should I calve?” For the past four years, the center has calved on grass. Initially, the May- and June-born calves at the center were weaned at the traditional early November dates. After three years of weaning younger calves, the questions started to come up: Why not wait to wean in January? Mid-May versus mid-March calving cuts 60 days of growth and 60 days of value, if sold at traditional weaning times. Last year’s early fall frigid temperatures, created challenges and the memory lingers. Weaning is always a stressful time. Weaning lighter, younger calves in inclement weather is tough. Management inputs are different than for older calves, and many producers are not set up to wean younger calves. Are the feed bunks the right height? Can the younger calves reach the water? These are simple, but important, questions. Remember, most calves can handle the weaning, but some calves were born mid-June and are only 5 months old. In reviewing the problem calves, the lighter, younger heifer calves particularly struggle. As the center staff pondered the consequences of May calving, the consensus was positive: Labor inputs are decreased and calving is much more manageable. But there is no way around the fact that November weaning of Mayborn calves takes 60 days of growth off the traditional sale ticket, plus negative impacts of weaning younger calves in regard to potential health problems are very real. In reviewing the center’s calving and weaning efforts in 2009, 2010 and 2011, the average calving date was March 29. In terms of starting the season, the third mature cow calving date is a good indicator of the official start of the calving season.
32 | JANUARY 2016
The average date the third mature cow calved was March 15 for those years. The calves from these years averaged 205 days of age at weaning and gained 2.5 pounds per day during the summer while nursing their mothers. The threeyear average actual weaning weight was 598 pounds. Following the 2011 calving season, the center delayed bull turnout until Aug. 1 for May calving. In 2012, 2013 and 2014, the average calving date was May 25. Again, using the third mature cow to indicate the start of calving, the average date the third mature cow calved was May 7. The calves from these years averaged 168 days of age at weaning and also gained 2.5 pounds per day during the summer while nursing their mothers. The three-year average weaning weight was 514. Interestingly, there is no difference in calf gain between the March/April or May/June calves. If both groups of calves were weaned at 200 days of age, the March/April calves would be estimated to weigh 586 pounds (average daily gain plus birth weight) and the May/June calves would be estimated to weigh 589 pounds. If the center sold in November, 60 days of growth at 2.5 pounds equals 150 pounds of missed growth. So, midJanuary is now the targeted weaning time. Remember, traditional bulls are turned out June 1, calves are due March 12, weaning will be in early to midNovember, and cows start their last trimester of pregnancy Dec. 12. In a later calving system, bulls are turned out Aug. 1, calves are due May 12, weaning is in early to mid-January, and cows start the last trimester of pregnancy Feb. 12. The May calving system simply shifts the important dates in the management of a cattle operation by 60 days, but it does not change the growth of calves or the need to change cow nutrition according to their stage of production. For the center, as for producers, changes in the management are not simple. Producers need to think well in advance and project the consequences of a change. Changing from March to May calving must account for and provide husbandry to move weaning into January, or at most, provide an adequate backgrounding program for younger weaned calves. In addition, producers must change the date for increasing cow nutrition during the last trimester of pregnancy from mid-December to midFebruary. The nutritional shift for cows is a good change, putting winter feed on the down side, with spring soon to arrive.

W
e’ve all seen the classic Campbell’s Soup commercial where the children come in from playing outside in the snow and melt away their snowmen exteriors with a bowl of soup. Winters in Gelbvieh country can become rather brutal and nothing warms like a bowl of hearty soup. Prepare this recipe from the American Gelbvieh Gal’s cookbook and leave it waiting for the crew to get in from chores.
Hearty Cowboy Soup Alice Maclennan Valhalla Ranch, Bennett, Colorado 2 lb. ground Gelbvieh beef, browned 1 large onion, diced 2 cups diced celery 1 large clove of garlic 6 bouillon cubes 1 green chili pepper, dried and crushed (adjust to your taste) ¼ cup ketchup salt, pepper and Tabasco to taste 1 cup frozen peas 1 cup diced carrots 4 cups diced potatoes 1/3 cup uncooked rice ½ cup finely shredded cabbage 2 to 4 quarts of water Place browned Gelbvieh beef and all other ingredients in a large soup kettle. Simmer over low to medium heat until vegetables and rice are done. The water can be adjusted to make the consistency of the soup to your family’s taste; if you desire a thinner type, more bouillon cubes may be added.

GW 2016 Herd Assessment Checklist:
New Year, New Herd Assessment
• Active membership required: You must be an active member of the AGA to assess your herd and register calves. Go online, now, to check and see if your membership is up-to-date.
By Kelli Retallick
J
anuary 1, 2016 began a new herd assessment year for the American Gelbvieh Association (AGA). Each female 13 months of age or older as of the first of the current year will be eligible for assessment. These animals are now available to be assessed located in the ‘Inventory’ option via AGA’s Online Registry Service. In order to register 2016 calves, females must have an available herd assessment (HAS) credit for 2016. The AGA staff would like to make this process a simple and easy for members as possible so here are a few reminders.
• HAS rate is $25.00 for females over 13 months of age. This one-rate fee allows members to register and transfer calves as well as report additional information (weaning, yearling, etc.) • One HAS credit = One calf registration. Registrations for natural born multiple birth calves (i.e. twins) can be done at no additional charge. In order to register additional embryo transfer (ET) calves, an additional $25 fee for each ET calf will be applied. • Due date for 2016 Herd Assessment is March 15, 2016. Any HAS received after this time will be charge a late penalty: 1-30 days = 5% late penalty
31-60 days = 10% late penalty

= 15% late penalty
As an example, a herd of 100 head of females eligible for HAS will be charged a late penalty fee of $125 for a late payment ranging from one to 30 days. • No processing fees when submitting information electronically. Any work submitted on paper will be charged an additional $2 processing fee per animal. If any member does not currently have online capabilities, contact the AGA office to set up this service. • Non-Gelbvieh or Balancer® animals can be assessed. Please call into the office with the animal’s registration number to get the female enrolled into the AGA Registry.
• Automatic Billing. Member accounts will be automatically billed for the correct amount. Balances can be paid via the online registry or by sending in a check to the AGA office. Any member account carrying a balance for 15 days or greater will be automatically locked. No online work is permitted until full payment is received. With this checklist in hand, the AGA staff hopes to make this year’s herd assessment process as straightforward as possible. As always if you continue to have questions, please contact the AGA office 303-465-2333 or via e-mail at info@gelbvieh.org. D
• Inactive cows can be re-activated. A female that has been previously dropped off a member’s inventory can be re-activated. In order to do so, the member will be charged $25 for every year the female remained inactive. For example, a cow dropped from inventory in 2014 will need to be assessed for 2014, 2015, and 2016 in order to register a 2016 calf. Contact the AGA

site at www.TjbGelbvieh.com to visit their program and sign up for future sale information. The sale will be approximately doubled next season and should be approaching 80 bulls. D
Sale Averages 33 Gelbvieh & Balancer® Yearling Bulls
$4,040
5 Commercial Cows
$2,050
T
JB Gelbvieh extended their very best of southern hospitality to an enthusiastic crowd of customers and family on a wet and nasty day in Chickamauga, Georgia. The outstanding set of yearling bulls was greatly appreciated and the sale was a great success. Leading the sale was Lot 1 TJB Addiction 417B, a BA75 Gunslinger son by one of the premier donors in the TJB program, 921U. He was purchased by Sleepy Creek Lands, LLC for $8,000 and will also be utilized in the AI program at TJB Gelbvieh. The next two bulls in the ring were also Gunslinger sons out of a full sister to 921U, TJB Anissa 913U. Sleepy Creek purchased Lot 2 for $6,500 and Lot 3 went to B/K Cattle Company in Missouri for $5,750. Lot 5 was one of two red bulls in the sale sired by TJB Vasquez selling to Sleepy Creek for $6,800. Lot 25 was another Gunslinger sired bull out of TJB’s Vickie Vail family and he had many friends sale day but ultimately went to Bar IV Ranch in Kentucky for $7,300. B/K Cattle Company added a true calving ease sire by Derringer out of a full sister to resident herd sires Vasquez and Valero for $6,000. Finishing out the first pen of bulls was a Vasquez sired bull going to Jeff Hopper in Woodland, Alabama for $5,000 and a full brother to Valero going to Circle K Farms in KY for $4,500. The rest of the sale was very consistent and sold in the $2,800 to $4000 range. The five commercial bred cows averaged $2,050 to finish the sale. Volume buyer was Sleepy Creek Lands, LLC. TJB Gelbvieh will hold their 5th sale next year on the first Saturday in November. Please visit their web
