A Program Built on Maternal Power
In early 1996, we met with our accountant about starting a small purebred operation. A successful seedstock producer himself, Jack offered one piece of advice. Get the best females you can afford because your cows are the foundation of your breeding program.
As our breeding program goes forward, more emphasis is being placed on improving carcass merit while maintaining the maternal power.

President’s view
Commitment, Dedication and Perseverance The Gelbvieh breed perseveres through the tough times by being a smart, easy crossbreeding solution, excelling in maternal performance, offering cutting edge selection tools, and having adaptability to all markets and environments. By Rob Arnold The past year has presented many challenges across much of the country. Mother Nature has handed producers with an array of obstacles to deal with from areas suffering from drought, others from floods, and still others from the results of violent storms including tornados. As one rancher told me, “We’ve been through it before and we’ll get through it again. We learn by going through the tough times… or should.” The drought reminded many what they had forgotten. That different management protocols can survive it better. They took notice that their crossbred cows bred up better. They were in better body condition at weaning. The science proved itself; crossbred cattle are more productive in tough conditions and environments. Ranchers didn’t need a “white paper” to prove this but rather their calving books and preg-checking records. The drought and tough environment once again proved the superiority of the Gelbvieh breed when compared to others. The heifers cycled. The cows weaned 6 | July 2013
heavy calves while breeding back. Reproductive performance has the most dramatic effect on a rancher’s bottom line relating to profitability in any environment. The American Gelbvieh Association membership defined goals on how to continue to serve the cattle industry by developing the long-range strategic plan, Impacting the Beef BusinessTM. It serves as a road map for research that will provide cutting edge genetic selection tools for both seedstock producers and commercial cattlemen. The plan includes all sectors of the industry including feedlot and end product. It has industry relevance. The plan defines the Gelbvieh breed for what it has been known – as the breed that serves the profit-minded cattlemen. The Gelbvieh breed and membership have dedicated themselves to serving the beef industry. Soon to be released genomic-enhanced EPDs will provide higher accuracy on young animals for selection purposes. A first of its kind maternal index is in development and will give
producers a tool to select females that excel in productivity. These are just two areas that show the dedication and commitment of Gelbvieh producers better serving the commercial beef producer in generating better and easier to use genetic evaluation tools of economic relevance. The Gelbvieh breed has the products which will thrive in any environment. Gelbvieh, Balancer®, and Southern Balancer® genetics work for commercial producers in providing products that serve all markets and environments. All are backed by industry leading tools for genetic selection that gives ease of mind regarding performance levels in all traits. They are developed to serve the commercial producer and to add profitability while meeting industry standards in the feed yard and packing house. As much of the country is now coming out of the drought and in certain areas experiencing an excess of moisture, producers will begin to restock their cow inventories. Astute cattlemen will be looking at Gelbvieh genetics to give them the added advantage of the female that has proven herself by being tested over decades of time as the one that adds the most profitability in traits of economic significance. They have perseverance. FFF

What Defines Us? People, places, and things over time will all define themselves. They build a picture or a thought in the minds of people when thought of. What traits define Gelbvieh and Balancer® cattle? By Frank Padilla Warren Buffett is defined by his record in the business world for investments. He has a proven and very successful track record of recognizing and then purchasing businesses with the potential of creating wealth for the stakeholders owning stock in Berkshire Hathaway. Vince Lombardi is defined as the tough coach of the Green Bay Packers who helped build a football dynasty as their head coach. Places such as Yellowstone National Park are defined for their natural beauty. The mountains, Old Faithful, and wildlife that reside within it make it unique. What we see and hear from those who have visited the park builds a picture in the minds of those who have not. The Gelbvieh breed has long been defined for the maternal excellence that it provides to the cattle industry. Early research done at the Meat Animal Research Center located in Clay Center, Nebraska proved the Gelbvieh breed as one that showed maternal excellence in milk production, age at puberty and pounds weaned per cow exposed. Later research showed the Gelbvieh breed to be superior in having lower birth weights than other Continental breeds, as well as having the smallest mature weights at five years of age. A research project done at Colorado State University showed Gelbvieh cows had more stayability than other breeds; they were able to get bred and to keep getting bred year after year. Cows that breed early, have lighter birth weights, are smaller in mature weight, and have the stayability to remain in the herd while weaning more pounds per cow exposed make producers money. These traits are by far the most important economic factors relating to cow herd profitability. There are key provide drivers in the feeding sector 8 | July 2013
of the cattle industry. Feeders want cattle that grow fast, have more carcass weight, and will grade Choice. They want cattle with feed efficiency; cattle that turn feed into pounds, while being Yield Grade 1s and 2s when a desirable end weight is reached.
The Meat Animal Research Center data showed that Gelbvieh cattle had the highest percent retail yield of all breeds tested in the Progress Report #22. Testimonials from cattle feeders as well as feed yard closeouts show that Balancer® and Gelbvieh cross calves are meeting their criteria for profit. Gelbvieh sired cattle have consistently been at the top for feedlot profitability in the Iowa State University Tri-County Steer Carcass Futurity. Harvest data on Balancer sired cattle marketed through U.S. Premium Beef have consistently graded 90 percent Choice with more carcass weight and fewer Yield Grade 4s than their Angus sired contemporaries. From actual close out data from producers, the Balancer sired cattle garnered premiums from value added programs such as CAB. They were more profitable than the Angus sired cattle because they combined more carcass weight with fewer Yield Grade 4 discounts, and had a high percentage of Choice cattle qualifying them for value added premiums. They gained fast with better feed conversions because of the added advantage of heterosis. They worked for the cattle feeders. Most times they don’t get their due credit because they have black hides and are not recognized as being Gelbvieh or Balancer by some. Gelbvieh has been known as the “blue collar” breed of cattle. The people that breed and raise them are cowmen whose living is made on a set of hard working cows. Their living is based on how well the product they raise fit their buyers in all sectors of the cattle industry. Hard working people and hard working cattle committed to doing what is profitable for commercial cattlemen and cattle feeders. What better way for the breed to be defined today and in the future? FFF

Status Update Impacting the Beef BusinessTM Long-Range Strategic Plan
A great amount of progress has been made in accomplishing the goals of the American Gelbvieh Association’s Impacting the Beef BusinessTM long-range strategic plan. The current status of all the goals and their next steps are presented for review. By Jim Gibb It’s been just over a year since the American Gelbvieh Association Board of Directors embarked on the development of a long-range strategic plan for the AGA. Many of you participated in the process by responding to the AGA membership survey. After it was developed, a major effort was initiated to share the plan to the AGA membership through state and regional Gelbvieh functions, the AGA annual convention, numerous one-on-one meetings, plus the American Gelbvieh Junior Association Board of Directors.
Yes, the current AGA strategic plan has at least two to four more years of life, but now is a good time for a check-up. The table that follows contains the current status and next steps for the goals within each of three areas of focus: breed improvement, breed promotion and member education.
Needless to say, the response has been very positive. However, talk is cheap and the success of any plan is measured by progress and results. Critical questions are: Where are we today? What has been accomplished? Are we “moving the dial” in the right direction?
Moreover, a key benefit of having a strategic plan comes at budget time when we will build the 20132014 AGA fiscal year budget around the strategic plan. Please feel free to contact me, or any of the AGA Board members, if you have questions or suggestions.
Accountability through transparency is essential to achieving the goals set out in the plan. Consequently, our goal is to keep this table updated and posted on the AGA website.

Next steps
Develop reliable tools to monitor traits for maternal efficiency. Traits for consideration are: heifer pregnancy, 30-month pregnancy, calving interval, mature size, pounds of calf weaned per cow exposed, and udder quality by fall 2013.
Heifer pregnancy and 30-month pregnancy “research EPDs, have been posted on the AGA website. The first research EPDs for mature size and udder score have been produced.
Calving interval EPDs will be reevaluated. Mature size and udder score EPDs are being further analyzed.
Improve marbling to 60% Choice.
2013 is the first spring breeding season for Gelbvieh and Balancer breeders to make selection decisions since the strategic plan was developed.
The marbling genetic trend will be monitored for improvement.
Implement genomic-enhanced EPDs (GE EPDs) by summer 2013.
A new Gelbvieh/Balancer- specific profile is in the final stages of development.
It is anticipated that GE EPDs will be introduced with release of the summer 2013 EPDs.
Develop new indexes for maternal selection, feeder calf value, and general purpose.
The maternal index is on schedule for completion by fall 2013. Feeder calf value and general purpose indexes (added by the AGA Board during their April 2013 meeting) should be completed by late December 2013.
AGA staff will continue to work with Dr. Mike MacNeil of Delta G to develop these indexes.
Develop feed efficiency EPDs by spring 2013.
A feed efficiency index will be Research feed efficiency EPDs, developed in collaboration with Colorado State University and included in the AGA sire summary. several Gelbvieh breeders with multiple years of feed intake data have been uploaded to the AGA website.
Core Focus: Breed Improvement
Tenderness: Decrease the breed A list of Gelbvieh breeders that have tested with average shear force value by .40 lb. one of the major genomics testing providers has using current genomic data by winter been provided to the AGA staff. 2015.
AGA members on the test list will be contacted to gain permission to access the tenderness test results from the genomics company.
Monitor growth: Communicate the importance of excelling in weaning and yearling weight, and provide tools for benchmarking progress.
Breed average genetic trends are provided to all AGA members and individual herd genetic trends were sent to several AGA members.
AGA members may request genetic trends for their herds at any time. There is no charge for this service.
Monitor temperament: Develop and implement temperament EPDs.
AGA staff has been evaluating different approaches to generating temperament EPDs.
Analyze the AGA temperament database. This should begin in the next 12 to 18 months.
Monitor foot soundness: Develop and implement a foot scoring system and EPDs.
This was labeled a lower priority goal. Nothing has been done to date.
The first steps will be to evaluate existing foot scoring systems for possible use by AGA members.

Next Steps
Increase promotion “reach” by 5% per year for the next three years with a focus on promoting Gelbvieh, Balancer and crossbreeding merits to the commercial cow-calf and feedlot sectors.
Through combined promotion efforts, the average reach has been increased by 20% for the 2012-2013 fiscal year.
Continued evaluation and implementation of promotion efforts to ensure effective messaging and media outlets are used.
Develop a draft plan for commercial marketing by August 1, 2013.
A draft plan is in development.
Present the draft to the AGA Board of Directors during their August 2013 board meeting.
Increase total AGA membership by 2% annually for the next three years by promoting Gelbvieh and Balancer to potential new seedstock breeders.
New AGA memberships are up 8% for the current fiscal year, on top of a 1% increase last year.
Promotional efforts targeted at new Gelbvieh breeders will continue.
Transfer rate will reach 45% of the animals registered by fall 2015.
Through May, transfers as a percentage of registrations are at 34%, 3% higher than the same time last year.
We will continue to communicate the value of transfers, especially related to enhanced communication of AGA services available to commercial producers.

News ‘n Notes Registering Canadian Gelbvieh with AGA
EPDs from January 2013
Registering a Canadian Gelbvieh animal with the AGA begins with contacting the office with a list of the Canadian animals to be registered with the AGA. If one or more parents is registered as an American Gelbvieh animal (AMGV prefix), no other DNA information is required. If neither parent of the animal you are trying to register has been registered as an American Gelbvieh, then the Canadian animal requires a DNA test to have their parentage markers on file, should the question of paternity ever arise.
The EPDs presented in advertisements and editorial in this July Gelbvieh World Herd Reference Edition are from the January 2013 American Gelbvieh Association national cattle evaluation. They are the most current EPDs at the time of sending this issue to press.
-To register a Canadian animal with the AGA, the fee is the usual $25 charge; -The parents of a Canadian calf do not have to be registered in order for you to register the calf with the AGA.
Member Online Registry Quick Tip When registering an animal through the Member Online Registry system, it is not necessary to enter the herd prefix into the animal name field. The herd prefix is automatically entered as part of the name. Putting in a herd prefix into the animal name field causes the prefix to show up twice in the animal’s name on the registration certificate.
Hall of Fame and Member of the Year Nominations Sought Each year the American Gelbvieh Association honors a Member of the Year and a Hall of Fame inductee during the AGA Annual Convention. Nomination forms must be submitted to the AGA office by August 15. To request a form or additional information, contact Dianne Coffman, AGA director of administration, at diannec@gelbvieh.org or 303-465-2333.
Submit Nominations for Board of Directors Recommendations for candidates for the 2013 American Gelbvieh Association Board of Directors are currently being sought. If you have recommendations for or you are interested in running for one of the Board positions that will be open for election during the 2014 annual AGA meeting, contact Mark Goes, Nominating committee chairman. GPA Program Gelbvieh Performance Advantage Program Honors 10 Breeders Ten American Gelbvieh Association members from Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, South Dakota, and Ohio were awarded Gold, Silver, or Bronze status for the 2012 management year through the Gelbvieh Performance Advantage program. By Jennifer Scharpe The American Gelbvieh Association is honored to recognize this year’s breeders for achieving Bronze, Silver or Gold status in the Gelbvieh Performance Advantage (GPA) program. A total of ten AGA members received the award for the 2012 management year.
Attaining GPA Bronze status entails gathering performance data above the minimum standards set for the breed. Typically, a mix of performance data collection, DNA testing and sire selection standards categorizes a breeder at this level. To achieve this status level, 100 points are needed.
The GPA program recognizes AGA members that promote the performance aspects of their program through data collection. The GPA program, unique within the seedstock industry, provides a tool for Gelbvieh producers both small and large to be recognized on records kept and data recorded in the previous calendar management year.
The American Gelbvieh Association congratulates this year’s award winners.
“Participating members use the GPA program as a way to enhance customer experience as they provide a value-added service with the data they collect from their breeding program,” said Susan Willmon, American Gelbvieh Association director of breed improvement. “Members who collect accurate and complete data such as birth, weaning and yearling weights, DNA results, disposition scores and ultrasound data, set their breeding program apart from the rest.” To achieve GPA Gold status, producers must collect and submit data on the highest percentage of performance data points. These herds practice AI breeding, DNA testing on calves and select sires to enhance breed improvement goals. Attaining this level requires 300 points. GPA Silver status requires producers to collect data on animals later in their production cycle, in addition to standard types of measurement. This can include complete yearling data on females and mature cows, ultrasound data and DNA testing. A minimum of 200 points are required to achieve this level. 16 | July 2013

S tuecken B rothers Industry Relevant Program How we are industry relevant: 1.) Produce genetics that exceeds the commercial cattleman’s needs. 2.) Incorporate useful carcass levels in addition to the typical easy/moderate calving and excellent growth. 3.) Tough management practices ("No Mercy" culling practices: cows must have good teats and udders; breed back on time, every time; cattle must have good feet and good dispositions). 4.) We raise cattle that perform without extra care and maintenance, the cows must be able to raise a calf, breed back and perform during the roughest times 5.) Superior cattle handling practices (safe, humane, and excellent health care)

Creating Superior Beef Genetics for Producer Success
View of the numbers Introducing Maternal and Feed Efficiency Research EPDs The heifer pregnancy EPD predicts the probability that a bull’s daughters will become pregnant as first-calf heifers in a regular breeding season, expressed as a percent. A higher value of this EPD is favorable, meaning that a higher percentage of a sire’s daughters get pregnant as first calf heifers compared to other sires in his contemporary group.
The American Gelbvieh Association is proud to announce research EPDs for heifer pregnancy and 30-month pregnancy, and a research index for feed efficiency. These breed improvement tools will help Gelbvieh and Balancer® breeders impact the beef business. By AGA Staff Providing the best and most reliable tools for genetic evaluation to Gelbvieh and Balancer® breeders and their commercial customers is a key principle of the American Gelbvieh Association. One of those tools is expected progeny differences (EPDs) provided through the AGA’s national cattle evaluation (NCE) process.
Table 1: Example of sire selection for heifer pregnancy.
The breed improvement goals of the Association’s Impacting the Beef BusinessTM strategic plan calls for the development of reliable tools to monitor traits for maternal efficiency, as well as to develop a feed efficiency EPD. AGA breed improvement staff has been working with industry professionals to provide these tools to members and is pleased to announce research EPDs for these traits.

Bull A

Bull B

The 30-month pregnancy EPD is the probability that a bull’s daughters will become pregnant and calve at three years of age, given that they calved as firstcalf heifers. This EPD is expressed as a percent, with a higher number being more favorable meaning a higher percentage of a sire’s daughters will calve at three years of age, given they calved as first-calf heifers.
Maternal EPDs The first two research EPDs for maternal efficiency are a heifer pregnancy (HP) EPD and a 30-month pregnancy (Pg30) EPD. These EPDs are being developed by Dr. Mike MacNeil, PhD of Delta G, and are part of a long-term project to create new tools for maternal improvement in Gelbvieh and Balancer females.
An example of how these EPDs can be used to identify superior sires for genetic improvement is shown in Table 1. Bull A has a HP EPD of 12.48, while Bull B has a HP EPD of 10.45. There is a 2.03 difference in the

values of their EPDs, which means that 2.03 percent more daughters from Bull A will calve as first calf heifers than daughters from Bull B.
Feed efficiency index A feed efficiency (FE) index has been developed with the assistance of Patrick Doyle, PhD, Chico State University associate professor in breeding and genetics. The FE index is an economic selection index developed to aid producers in selecting for more feed efficient cattle that still have acceptable amounts of gain. By selecting on this index, producers will also be selecting for more profitable cattle as a result of the economic weights in the index. The FE index provides slight negative pressure on intake, while keeping gain at a constant value. By selecting on this index, producers will be able to find those animals that gain the same amount as their contemporaries while eating less. In the example in Table 2, all the bulls have the same RFI EPD but vary greatly in dry matter intake
(DMI), average daily gain (ADG), and yearling weight (YW). Selecting on the RFI EPD alone could result in animals with reduced feed intake but inadequate gain performance. Selection using the FE index will identify animals with the most genetic potential for a profitable combination of ADG and DMI.
The FE index provides slight negative pressure on intake, while keeping gain at a constant value...Producers will be able to find those animals that gain the same amount as their contemporaries while eating less. More information on these research EPDs and the index, including a list of sires with the HP EPD, Pg30 EPD, and the FE index, can be found at www.gelbvieh. org. Questions should be directed to AGA breed improvement staff, Susan Willmon and Kari Otteman, at 303-465-2333. FFF

Breed Improvement Genomic-Enhanced EPDs: Adding Reliability to Your Tools for Genetic Improvement Genomic-enhanced EPDs are a useful tool for breeders and commercial customers that adds accuracy, reduces risk, and increases rate of genetic change. The American Gelbvieh Association will introduce GE EPDs with the summer 2013 NCE. By AGA Staff In these challenging times in the beef business, Gelbvieh and BalancerÂŽ breeders, and their commercial customers, are looking for tools to make their management decisions more efficient and accurate. Beginning in 2011 with the inception on the Genomic Pioneers project, the American Gelbvieh Association has been working towards a tool that will make the EPDs produced in the biannual national cattle evaluation (NCE) even more useful to producers.
The American Gelbvieh Association plans to incorporate genomic information into the summer 2013 genetic evaluation. Last spring, Dr. Dorian Garrick of Iowa State University reported that a Gelbvieh/Balancer specific panel of DNA markers can be used to develop genomicenhanced EPDs (GE EPDs). The combination of our existing database and the addition of genomic data will result in EPDs that roll the accuracy of a DNA test and the information of individual, pedigree, and progeny performance into one, easy to use number. Using GE EPDs can help your operation in three ways: increased

accuracy; reduced risk by reducing possible change; increased rate of genetic change.
Increasing accuracy On young animals without individual or progeny performance records, genetic merit is estimated in the form of an EPD calculated by taking the average breeding value of its parents (VanEenennaam, 2009). This results in an EPD with a low accuracy calculation. The addition of genomic data to an EPD calculation is comparable to adding another source of information, like progeny or pedigree records. Specifically on lowly heritable traits, such as reproduction, genomic data has the potential to greatly increase the accuracy of an EPD prediction.
Reducing risk EPD estimates on an animal increase in accuracy over time as observations on an animal’s own performance and that of its descendants are added to the calculation. It follows that EPDs on young animals with very little accuracy have the possibility to change a great deal over time. Possible change is another measure of accuracy that indicates the amount of future change in an EPD prediction (Bourdon, 2000). This possible change can add risk when producers use young animals in their breeding herds, because the true merit of the genetics those animals will pass to their offspring is basically unknown.

GE EPDs help to reduce the amount of error between the difference in an animal’s true genetic merit and its predicted genetic merit (in other words, an EPD). Confidence in an animal’s EPDs earlier in life means that producers can more reliably predict the performance outcomes of using unproven animals in their breeding herd.
Increasing rate of genetic change The rate of genetic change in an operation is dependent on four factors: 1) Accuracy of selection; 2) Selection intensity; 3) Genetic variation; and 4) Generation interval. GE EPDs affect two factors in this equation: accuracy of selection
and generation interval. We have already discussed how genomic data improves accuracy by adding another piece of information to EPD calculations. DNA information is also valuable because it can be collected at birth or soon after and added to an animal’s EPD calculation right away, which gives producers a better idea about

that animal’s genetic merit at a younger age. Using this genomicenhanced information as a culling tool can help breeders decrease the generation interval in their herds, thereby speeding the rate of genetic change. This is a benefit to producers because it will allow more progress in their breeding goals in a shorter amount of time.
Simplified data The addition of genomic information to our current NCE will also mean the end of Igenity® scores being provided as part of genomic testing offered through the AGA, with the possible exception of tenderness and docility. While this may be an adjustment, it will benefit producers in the end. It will not be necessary to look
at a row of EPDs and Igenity scores in a sale catalog anymore; the DNA data will be added to the EPD automatically. This solves the problem of having yet another set of numbers published with a bull at sale time.
The addition of genomic data to an EPD calculation is comparable to adding another source of information, like progeny or pedigree records. Specifically on lowly heritable traits, such as reproduction, genomic data has the potential to greatly increase the accuracy of an EPD prediction.
Genomic information is not a replacement for phenotypic information on an animal. Remember, genomic data is just another source of information to make an animal’s EPD estimations more accurate. Phenotypes such as
birth weight, weaning weight, and calving ease are still needed to make the equation we use to predict GE EPDs as accurate as possible. For more information on GE EPDs, go to www.gelbvieh.org and visit the Library page under the Education Center, or call the AGA office at 303-465-2333. FFF

Herd Management Develop a Bovine Diarrhea Virus (BVD) Surveillance Plan for Your Cow Herd A BVD Surveillance Plan is a program that emphasizes the importance of educating beef cattle producers about how to control the infectious disease, BVD. The keys for successful control are vaccination, surveillance testing, removal of infected animals, and improved biosecurity and awareness. By John Paterson Bovine Viral Diarrhea (BVD) causes a variety of clinical outcomes that range from sub-clinical to severe. These outcomes include abortion, infertility, immunosuppression and can result in calf respiratory and enteric diseases, and most dramatically, a fatal mucosal disease. The disease is maintained by a small population of animals that become persistently infected (PI) with the virus. These PI animals are the major reservoir of

the BVD virus and calves become infected while in the uterus during early pregnancy. Such infections can remain throughout the pregnancy, after birth, and for the lifetime of the animal.
Interestingly, although infection of the fetus results in PI, the mother is only transiently infected (not persistently infected) and becomes immune to the virus within two to three weeks. PI calves often die prematurely with respiratory or enteric disease but may live a relatively normal life for several years; all the time, shedding large amounts of virus and acting as a reservoir of infection for other cattle.

Table 1. from NAHMS (BVDInfo.org) demonstrates that between four and eight percent of U.S. operations tested had at least one BVD positive animal even though infection rates were very low (.04-.14%). Unpublished data collected over seven years from numerous states has shown that the incidence of BVD has ranged from .21 percent to .55 percent (between two and five infected animals/1,000 tested). However, what is concerning is that between four and eight percent of farms and ranches tested had at least one infected animal (Table 1).

PIs are the most significant source of infection of the BVD virus. Removing PIs from the cow herd removes the source of infection and reduces the disease reproduction rate to the point that the virus
cannot survive and the disease is controlled. Despite 60 years of vaccination, BVD infections remain a source of significant economic loss for producers in the United States. The perception of a low prevalence of BVD herd infections, the
unrestricted sale of PI cattle, lack of economic data, intensive marketing of vaccines, reluctance to accept federal regulations, and a “gambler’s” attitude among producers are impediments to implementation of a national systematic BVD control program.
As a rancher how do you evaluate risk of BVD infection? The NCBA- BVD Working group has recently released a very user friendly computer program called BVD Consult (go to http://www. bvdinfo.org/) which will calculate the cattle producers potential for BVD infection in his/her cow herd. For example, the rancher is asked questions such as: > Will you quarantine and test all new cattle coming into your breeding herd (including special considerations for pregnant cattle)? > Can you prevent fence-line and direct contact of your pregnant herd with other cattle? > Will you use an appropriate BVD vaccination strategy on heifers? > Have the mature cows in your herd been appropriately vaccinated for BVD? > Will you apply appropriate surveillance methods? This computer program as well as a wealth of other practical information on this web site can be invaluable to the rancher who has concerns about the potential for BVD infection in his/her cowherd. Table 2 compares cow herds with either high or low risk of BVD Infection. A recent report from Auburn University has dispelled numerous myths and truths about BVD infection. A couple of the myths and correct answers include: Myth: Multiple low-birth weight calves should raise suspicion of disease due to BVDV. Confirmed. While calves persistently infected with BVDV can present as normal calves, many

times they are small and unthrifty. In one study, the median live calf birth weights were 37 pounds for persistently infected calves in comparison to 65 pounds for uninfected calves. Myth: The dam of every PI calf is a PI herself. Not true. Persistent infection in a calf occurs when the dam is infected with noncytopathic BVD virus prior to approximately 125 to 150 days of gestation. This can occur following an acute or persistent infection of the dam. Prior research demonstrates that 93 percent of PI calves do not come from a PI dam. The non-PI cow that experiences an acute infection and subsequently gestates a PI calf throughout pregnancy will not spread BVD after postpartum uterine discharges cease. This cow will also exhibit the greatest immunity to subsequent disease due to BVD. Thus, culling dams of PI calves without testing to
see if the dam herself is PI is clearly poor management in almost all circumstances.
What is the concept of a BVD surveillance program? The overall strategy for the eradication of the BVD virus from the cow herd can best be described by the following diagram. The aim of NCBA’s research project is to answer two questions: is the BVD virus circulating in a cow herd? And secondly, the way to answer this question is by using a surveillance method of ear notch testing of calves to determine if the BVD virus is present. Strategies to remove BVD-PI or to prevent entry of BVD into the cow herd are not in the scope of this project. That must under the purview of the cattle producer working with his/her veterinarian. The proposed NCBA-BVD surveillance plan is designed to
answer the question: What is my potential for BVD infection in my cow herd? (See Figure 1.) The focus of this project is to develop a surveillance database to determine infection rates (similar to table 1) by the use of an ear notch of calves and feeder cattle. This plan does not have a focus of developing eradication strategies because this needs to be a plan developed by the rancher and his veterinarian.
What is the NCBA-BVD Research Surveillance plan? The NCBA-BVD Research Surveillance Plan is a program that emphasizes the importance of educating the producers of the U.S. cattle industry on proper BVD control. The keys are education, vaccination, testing (focus of this project) and removal of PIs, and improved biosecurity and awareness.
Table 2. Comparison of Herds with Low or High Risk of BVD Infection Potential
Description of Low Risk Herds Normal herd production performance • Raise own replacement females • Purchase replacement bulls from reputable purebred herds that use biosecurity principles • Limited exposure to herds of unknown BVDV status • Production performance and individual records do not show any evidence of persistently infected (PI) animals in the herd (pregnancy rates, pregnancy loss percent, calf morbidity and mortality are within normal range) • Replacement heifers are on a complete vaccination program • Feedlot performance, morbidity, mortality are normal • Laboratory tests have shown no evidence of BVD problems 38 | July 2013
Description of High Risk Herds Decreased cow herd production performance • Increased calf morbidity (sickness), mortality, decreased weaning performance • Decreased conception rates and increased pregnancy loss • Postmortem exams and lab results have shown that PI animals are present in the herd

Figure 1. “What is my potential for BVD infection in my cow herd?”
NCBA has contact with cattlemen all across the country and this effort has great economic benefit for the industry as the disease is estimated to cause over one billion dollars in losses. NCBA covers all segments of the industry. For the effort to be successful the cow-calf, stocker and feeder needs to be involved. The feeder can assist in getting info back to the ranch and through surveillance data demonstrate areas that need an educational effort. Ability to generate a national database of generic testing data that would demonstrate efforts and improvements in control.
BVD continues to be the most costly virus to the U.S. cattle population. This virus starts at the farm or ranch and causes decreased reproduction, increased sickness and death loss, and reduced performance. The main reservoir for the virus is a persistently infected (PI) animal that is formed during gestation.
This surveillance service is guaranteed to be confidential. The Producer Education Group at NCBA is not interested in where the specific ranch is located. If you determine that you have an infected animal the next course of action is between you and your local veterinarian. For more information about participating in this project of surveillance testing, email John Paterson, executive director of producer education for the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association, at jpaterson@beef.org. Industry News Superior Livestock Auction Purchased by National Livestock and Danny Jones from National, and I truly believe that National is the ideal ownership group for Superior Livestock Auction. We share common goals and values and we look forward to working with them as we move forward to continue our legacy in the livestock marketing industry.”
National Livestock Credit is pleased to announce the purchase of Superior Livestock Auction, Inc. National Livestock and cattlemen from several states have formed a limited partnership to acquire Superior. National Livestock Credit is part of a family of livestock service companies formed in 1932 to improve the ability of producers to market and finance livestock. When livestock producers were seeking more competitive options, the National Livestock companies were formed to improve the potential for profitability for those producers. The corporate headquarters of National Livestock Credit is located in the Oklahoma National Stockyards in Oklahoma City, Okla. Superior Livestock Auction, Inc. was founded in 1987 and introduced satellite video marketing to the nation’s cattle industry. Superior has grown to become the largest livestock auction in the United States, marketing well over one million head of cattle annually. Superior Livestock Auction, Inc. has offices located in Brush, Colo., and Fort Worth, Texas, with its auction facilities and Superior Productions’ offices located in The Fort Worth Stockyards National Historic District. Jim Odle, co-founder and general manager of Superior Livestock Auction, commented “I have had the privilege of meeting and getting to know Robert York
Joe Lichtie, vice-president of Superior Livestock Auction noted, “This is a perfect alliance of two industry leaders coming together. Superior Livestock is thankful for the successful transition led by National and Farm Credit West throughout the acquisition of Superior. We couldn’t have asked for a better outcome for Superior Livestock, our representatives, employees and most importantly our loyal customers. This venture has been a long time coming, and we look forward to remaining the Nation’s leader in livestock marketing.” Robert York, president and CEO of National added, “We have admired the business model of Superior for many years. We have often had the opportunity to work with many of the representatives and employees of Superior since we share many mutual customer relationships. We have always viewed Superior as a company comprised of hard working people with the strongest integrity and we believe they work every day to achieve higher profits for their buyers and sellers. We couldn’t be more pleased to join forces.” FFF

DNA Testing Reduced Price DNA Testing Options for AGA Members The American Gelbvieh Association, through its partnership with GeneSeek®, is pleased to offer complete DNA testing services for its members. GeneSeek is the official DNA service provider for the AGA and through this relationship, more affordable testing options are now available to members. The following chart lists new pricing for DNA testing. These prices went into effect on June 1, 2013. Members will notice that both the high-density and the low-density Gelbvieh Genomic Profiler (Options 1 and 2) are now cheaper. The highdensity test uses an 80K SNP profile.
The low-density test uses 8.5K SNP profile. Animals tested under either option will automatically receive genomic-enhanced EPDs. Both options also include parent verification at no extra cost if requested on the order form. A new addition to both Genomics Option 1 and Genomics

Option 2 is testing for the genetic abnormalities of Nueropathic Hydrocephalus (NH) and Osteopetrosis (OS). These two defect tests do not have royalties associated with them and are therefore able to be included into the genomic panel. The Genomics Option 1 (GGPHD) is required for all AI sires and donor dams as of April 1, 2013. AI sires must complete the parent verification process, which must be requested on the order form. Donor dams must have parentage markers on file, which are automatically included in the 80K SNP profile. A new addition to the DNA testing options is a standalone test for tenderness. Initially, members who purchase this test will receive an Igenity® score for tenderness. As the AGA works to develop an EPD for tenderness, these results will eventually be included in the tenderness EPD. Charges for DNA tests will be billed to AGA member’s credit card on file. Results will be held until payment is received. Tests must be submitted on AGA forms to receive the AGA pricing. Additional processing charges may apply if hair samples are not submitted in a DNA hair collector card. When animal registration number is included, tests results will be transferred to the animal record. The AGA office will email test results to the member. Members should remember to allow at least three weeks for DNA testing. Questions regarding testing options and DNA results should be directed to the AGA office at 303465-2333. FFF

The Kentucky Gelbvieh Association holds field days and other events to increase membership and demand for Gelbvieh. Photo taken by William McIntosh at the 2012 Kentucky field day hosted at Double Diamond Farms.
A Successful State Association Starts with Leadership Strong leadership and dedicated members have made the Kentucky Gelbvieh Association a well-run state association. By hosting successful events, such as the NAILE, state sales, field days, and meetings, they have increased membership and registrations, and created demand for Gelbvieh and Balancer® cattle. By William McIntosh The Kentucky Gelbvieh Association (KYGA) has seen great success over the last several years. They have taken responsibility for the North American International Livestock Exposition (NAILE) Eastern National Gelbvieh and Balancer® show and have seen an increase of nearly 80 percent in 50 | July 2013
numbers of animals exhibited. They have also added a sale along with the event, and in 2013 they will sponsor a heifer futurity. Along with the NAILE, KYGA have been able to add a Gelbvieh and Balancer show/sale to the Kentucky Beef Expo. At this year’s sale, Gelbvieh and Balancer boasted
the third highest breed average out of the ten breeds represented. It was only their second year participating in the event. KYGA have also hosted field days and other membership driven projects to increase membership and demand for the breed. They have increased membership to rank third in the nation and increased registrations to rank eighth. The events and member activities have allowed the KYGA to create demand for Gelbvieh and Balancer cattle within Kentucky, and the eastern U.S. The KYGA is a shining example of a well-run association, thus allowing such success.
Putting good of membership above personal agendas The success of the Kentucky association started with strong leadership from within the membership who put the good of the Association and of the breed over their personal agendas. “We have many breeders within Kentucky that have the ‘good of the breed’ within their scopes. Each year more good leaders surface to become active in the KYGA. Our membership doesn’t seem to elect leadership with the ‘I’ mentality. Proudly our leadership is driven by the ‘we’ mentality for the good of fellow breeders and the entire breed,” said Gary Tilghman, American Gelbvieh Association board of director and charter

member of the KYGA. There are five essential qualities a strong leader must have. They are: 1) The ability to inspire and motivate; 2) Have a vision; 3) Trust; 4) Good communication; and 5) Take responsibility. Great leaders must be able to inspire and motivate others to accomplish a command goal. John Quency Adams said, “If your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more, and become more, you are a leader.” A great leader is able to inspire others to do more to accomplish common goals and is able to explain how accomplishing the set goal will benefit them and the entire organization. Many may think that leadership is about power; driving

people to do what you want to accomplish is the wrong leadership. A true leader is not a boss, they are able to influence and inspire people to accomplish a goal or objective of the organization. A leader inspires and motivates, a bossy person barks orders. A strong leader must be a visionary. They must have a clear sense of purpose for the association. People will only follow you if they see that you know where you are going. They must be able to set clear common goals for the organization. The membership should know what are the goals and objectives of the organization, and how the organization works is the only way to show others you know what you are doing. accomplish far more in a shorter period of time than people without them could ever imagine.” Effective leaders are trustworthy leaders. Similar to respect, it is something that has to be earned. Good and effective leadership can be measured from the trust and confidence your subordinates have for you. If they trust you they will follow you through hell, for you and the organization. To build that trust you must always keep the good of the organization in mind. Communication is very crucial to effective leadership and the success of any organization. The vision and goals of the association must be clearly communicated to all of the membership.
Delegate responsibility to dedicated members A good leader is willing to take responsibility as well as delegate responsibility. Within any successful organization there are too many goals and tasks to be handled by one or two people. A strong leader should be able to recognize strengths in others and trust them to complete set goals. Ultimately a strong leader will take responsibility for the goals being accomplished and should have regular communication with the appointed person discussing progress. “We have enjoyed fine leadership, including but not limited to our KYGA presidents who have driven the Association
down a very straight and deliberate path that is easy to see a positive and pro-active future,” Tilghman added. Leadership in the KYGA is not limited to the officers and Board of Directors. The KYGA is lucky to have an array of dedicated members that are willing to give freely of their time, knowledge and skills. Prior planning prevents poor performance. When working toward a common goal the KYGA spends an appropriate amount of time developing a plan of attack to accomplish their goals. “Countless hours of program planning, communication, and striving for new program implementation has allowed KYGA to be one of, if not the top,

We appreciate everyone’s support,” said Karen Douglas, NAILE Gelbvieh and Balancer superintendent. The Board of Directors, officers, and committee chairmen have frequent conference calls to discuss progress being made towards the goals. “Conference calls have worked well for us,” said David Slaughter, past president and charter member of the KYGA. “With everyone’s busy schedule it is hard to find a time to travel to a central location that is convenient to everyone. Conference calls allow us to visit more frequently and discuss upcoming events.” Current KYGA President Joe Piles says, “Activity breeds activity. The more successful events we can have within the state the more attention and excitement we can draw to Gelbvieh and Balancer cattle.” The Kentucky Gelbvieh Association, with strong leadership, driven membership, and clearly set goals has been able to come together as a group to achieve tall goals. Their efforts have promoted the breed in a positive light to countless cattle producers, thus increasing the demand for Gelbvieh and Balancer cattle throughout the state and region. FFF

Communication Note Promoting through Video Search for AmericanGelbvieh on YouTube to find the AGA’s promotional and marketing videos. Two new video series have been created titled “Balancer® Cattle Make the Grade” and “AGJA Junior Voice Interviews with Junior Members.” By Jennifer Scharpe Did you know that the American Gelbvieh Association has a YouTube channel? Well, actually, we have two of them. The first is called AmericanGelbvieh and serves an important role in the Association’s marketing and promotion efforts. The second is called GelbviehTech and offers many educational and how-to videos to assist members. At the time of press of this issue, there were 52 videos on the AmericanGelbvieh YouTube channel, with several more in development. Ten new videos were uploaded in early June. If you haven’t visited this channel recently, now is a great time to check it out. The AGA’s marketing and promotion strategy uses several forms of media including print, web, social, and now videos are playing an increasing role in communicating the message. Videos are a great way to share a message. Visual forms of communication are becoming more popular, and in some cases are replacing print communications. People are more likely to click on a video then they are to read text. One series of videos that was created is titled “Balancer® Cattle Make the Grade.” These videos are part of the AGA promotion campaign targeted to feedlot operators. This campaign uses
58 | July 2013
testimonials from feedlot operators and cow-calf producers who retain ownership on their calves and have experience feeding Balancer-sired cattle. The testimonials use actual close-out data that prove Balancer cattle will hit the Quality Grade targets the industry wants, and will do so with better Yield Grades, more carcass weight, and better gains – ultimately adding up to more profit for the producer. The videos are the testimonials. It is these third-party testimonials that are more likely to resonate with the audience. Another series of videos that was recently added is titled “Junior Voice Interviews with AGJA Members.” During the AGJA Western Regional Show, AGJA Board Member Michael Ring interviewed several AGJA members about their experiences in the junior association. Look for more videos to be posted throughout the summer and fall, especially during the AGJA Northern Lights Classic. New videos will also be posted to the American Gelbvieh Association’s Facebook page. Be sure to like the AGA’s Facebook page so you can watch the latest videos and stay up-to-date on all our news and happenings. Video is here to stay and is a great marketing and promotional tool. FFF

A state Gelbvieh association is an independent organization and affiliated with the American Gelbvieh Association. Primarily, state associations help increase the demand for Gelbvieh and Balancer速 genetics and foster relationships among seedstock breeders, commercial producers, and allied industry within the state or region. Activities of state associations can include state sponsored Gelbvieh sales, Maternal Edge female sales, field days, tours, meetings, shows, and junior events. Contact the state officers from the association in your state for information on how to join your local Gelbvieh association. As this list changes throughout the year depending on each state association, visit www.gelbvieh.org for the most up-to-date list of state and regional association officers.

Family Traditions Continue at Warner Beef Genetics As one of the largest Gelbvieh breeders, Warner Beef Genetics attributes the success of their program to the family team effort, providing industry relevant genetics, and outstanding customer service. By Jennifer Scharpe Warner Beef Genetics ranks sixth in the American Gelbvieh Association for total registrations, as reported from the AGA statistics reflecting the 20112012 fiscal year. This year’s ranking is a jump from thirteen the previous year. This family-run Gelbvieh and Balancer® seedstock operation is focused on maternal excellence, industry relevance, and customer service. Owned and managed by a team effort, Warner Beef Genetics is located at Arapahoe, Nebraska. The family includes Monte and Kristie; Darren and Amy, and their children Aubree, Bryson, and Addelyn; Dan and Kate, and their children Gentry, Berkley, and Kallen. “We all own our own cows, but manage them
collectively within the goals of the program. Each of us also have our own cropping acres but work collectively in the management of the acres,” said Dan Warner.
Monte, Darren and Dan work together with one full-time employee and two part-time employees. But each person also specializes in the management of particular enterprises within the family operation. “The work load often times overlaps between harvesting, haying, and the cattle operations, so it is important to have trust in each other’s ability to be effective and confident in each other’s actions,” Dan noted. Warner Beef Genetics consists of 500 Gelbvieh and Angus commercial cows and over 400 registered Gelbvieh, Balancer and Angus females. The herd revolves around breed-leading herd bulls, an aggressive

“The seedstock business is always going to be a ‘people’ business. Relationships with our customers are vital to the success of our production sale. We strive to become a part of their program and assist them in any advisory role we can.” Warner Beef also works closely with feed yards that they have a direct relationship with. This relationship allows them to help offer bids for their customer’s cattle.

AI and ET program, and unmatched customer service. “We offer 150 bulls and females through our annual production sale the first Tuesday of March. This makes up approximately the top 30 percent of bulls raised and an elite group of females from their respective contemporary groups. We retain about 30 percent
of our heifer calves each year for replacements and then will sell a few females out of those heifers later on.” The remaining calves are sold with their commercial steers and heifers through Superior Livestock Auction. Commercial replacement females are also sold private treaty and on Maternal Edge sales.

“It is crucial to add value to our customers’ cattle without taking a percentage of the outcome,” Dan emphasized. The Maternal Edge sales are quickly becoming an asset for adding value to their customers’ high-quality replacement Gelbviehinfluenced commercial females. “The Nebraska Maternal Edge sale has been an excellent opportunity for us to facilitate trade between our customers without becoming a part of the transaction. Sales of this nature allow our customers to become a part of the seedstock industry without feeling intimidated by the fast pace of the business. Additionally they are rewarded directly for the added investment of quality genetics in their program.” One final key to the Warner Beef Genetics customer service program is a “no questions asked policy on the satisfaction of our cattle at the future homes.” Dan adds, “If the customer isn’t satisfied with their purchase because of disposition or soundness, the animal is replaced.” In January of 2007, Warner Beef Genetics partnered with Chris Davidson from Australia to form Trans Pacific Genetics. Through this partnership, they own a select group
of females together and have an extensive embryo transfer program. The goal is to create an elite nucleus of genetics to incorporate back into Warner Beef Genetics.
program. It has been a great tool for sampling outlier genetics. This partnership has been vital in broadening our gene pool and being able to offer a greater selection of genetics for our customers.”

Dan was recently elected to his second three-year term on the American Gelbvieh Association Board of Directors. He has served as treasurer and is the current vice president of the Association. “It has been a valuable experience to serve on the AGA Board of Directors. Working with staff and other Board members for the success of the breed and its
members is very important to me.” When asked about the future of the AGA and Gelbvieh and Balancer cattle, Dan said, “I truly feel that this breed is positioning itself to be a vital factor in the future of the industry. No other breed can offer more in a crossbreeding program for the commercial cattle industry. The Gelbvieh breed is smaller than others but cannot be complacent and small-minded within the industry. We must think big and be innovative in the genetics we offer the industry to remain relevant. The maternal efficiencies of this breed have a large financial impact to every cow-calf producer in the world. This alone can keep our breed relevant, as long as we are keeping up with the rest of the industry in performance and carcass merit.” FFF

Herd Health Modified-Live IBR Vaccines Implicated in Abortion Cases Studies showing low reproduction rates when modified-live IBR vaccine is used on pregnant cows raises concern. Selecting an inactivated vaccine may be an alternative for managing IBR. When cattle producers select a vaccine to protect against infectious bovine rhinotracheitis (IBR), they expect their cows and heifers will produce a healthy calf. Understandably, the health and well-being of breeding stock is paramount in cow-calf and dairy operations. Often the question arises as to whether an inactivated
(INV) or modified-live (MLV) vaccine is best suited for use in pregnant cows.
In 2004, some MLV vaccines got the green light for use in pregnant animals, but recent research by university researchers and veterinarians demonstrates that MLVs can put pregnancies and conception rates at risk, unlike their INV counterpart. Just what are the risks? Researchers at several universities

recently reported MLVs can have a detrimental effect on reproduction, resulting in abnormal estrous cycles, reduced conception rates and, potentially, abortions. “In this instance, animals in our university herd had been appropriately vaccinated prebreeding with a modifiedlive vaccine, and they were vaccinated again at about seven months of pregnancy,” notes Dr. Donal O’Toole, MVB, PhD, Department of Veterinary Science, University of Wyoming. O’Toole explains that starting around 30 days postvaccination, a series of abortions began which continued out to about 50 days. The total reproductive loss was a disturbing 25 percent. “What we found at the Wyoming State Vet Lab when we started looking into these recent episodes was an association with recent use of modified-live IBR vaccines, despite the fact they were administered following label directions,” O’Toole explains. The heifers had classical lesions caused by IBR, and there was no evidence of any other causes of abortion in the animals. “The conclusion my colleagues and I came to was that using a modified-live IBR vaccine can cause abortions,” O’Toole says. He isn’t alone in that conclusion. Several other university veterinarians have determined that vaccinating with an MLV can be detrimental to herd reproduction. Dr. Chris Chase, DVM, MS, PhD, South Dakota State University, has conducted extensive

studies on reproduction in cattle. “Producers believe IBR is just about a respiratory disease, but the virus has an important role as a pathogen in the reproductive tract,” says Chase. Chase discovered a modified-live IBR vaccine affected conception rates in cattle. Dr. Doug Scholz, DVM, director of veterinary services for Novartis Animal Health, points to two large dairy operations in Colorado that were frustrated by low conception rates and high pregnancy losses. The vaccination programs on the dairies were similar, with heifers getting three or four doses of a fiveway IBR MLV. “Their abortion rates regularly exceeded 20 percent, and would jump up to 25 to 35 percent at any
given time,” Scholz notes. Dr. Chase strongly advocates using an INV, explaining that it has a much higher safety profile than an MLV. Dr. Clinton Jones, PhD, a virologist at the University of Nebraska, explains that vaccination with an IBR MLV may create problems for reproduction. Like field strains of IBR, the vaccine strain has the potential to reactivate from latency following a stressful event or immune suppression. “Modified-live viruses, if reactivated, are likely to enter the blood system and cross the placenta. The IBR virus prefers actively growing tissue, which is characteristic of a developing
embryo,” Jones says. He worries that a cow vaccinated with an MLV has the ability to infect others in the herd by shedding the IBR virus. “The most important thing about managing IBR and modifiedlive vaccines in herds is that one should never vaccinate a pregnant cow with an MLV,” says Jones. Dr. O’Toole sums it up simply. “If you’re going to vaccinate animals for IBR, use an inactivated vaccine. Inactivated vaccines are very safe, and have a good track record in terms of efficacy. There are several recent papers demonstrating that they offer very good protection. There is no reason to risk using a modified-live product in pregnant cattle.” FFF

Exploring American Gelbvieh Foundation Giving Options Giving to the American Gelbvieh Foundation can be simple and easy. Depending on your desires, gifts can be part of a trust or not, they can be permanent or they can be changed and modified. Best of all, all gifts are tax deductible and will assist the AGA reach its goals of impacting the beef business. By Dana Stewart The decision to make a gift to the American Gelbvieh Foundation should be an easy choice. Donating to the Foundation, paves the way for future generations of American Gelbvieh Association members to continue to breed and improve Gelbvieh and Balancer® cattle. The Foundation’s efforts in research and education pay dividends on the gifts received, making it a wise choice for AGA members when it comes to charitable giving. The decision of how to give to the American Gelbvieh Foundation, however, may not be as easy. Sorting through the several options can be overwhelming. While having a multitude of giving choices available benefits the donor, it can become confusing to know what your best choice is. Giving to the American Gelbvieh Foundation is mutually beneficial for the donor and the Foundation. The donor receives great satisfaction in contributing to the Gelbvieh legacy while often receiving tax benefits. In turn, the Foundation increases its ability to serve current and future AGA members. Three possible types of giving include: irrevocable nontrust gifts, irrevocable gifts in trust, and revocable gifts. An irrevocable gift is a permanent gift that cannot be taken back. A revocable gift, on the other

hand, can be transferred at a time after the gift is made.
Irrevocable nontrust gifts
Irrevocable nontrust gifts are simply gifts made to the Foundation that cannot be taken back by the donor, and as stated in the name, are not included within a trust. An easy example is the gift of cash. Any size cash gift can be made to the Foundation. Once the gift is made, it remains the property of the Foundation. Other examples include securities, life insurance, and personal property. And because the Foundation is a 501(c)(3) organization, all gifts are tax deductible.
Irrevocable gifts in trust An irrevocable gift in trust is a gift that cannot be transferred. Assets held in an irrevocable trust are not included in the grantor’s (the person who set it up and funded it) estate, thus escaping estate taxes. Examples include charitable remainder annuity trusts, charitable remainder unitrusts, and charitable lead trusts. With a charitable remainder annuity trust, the donor transfers property to the Foundation. In turn the Foundation guarantees a specified income amount to the donor. This can be set up to benefit the donor or the donor’s spouse upon their death. A charitable remainder unitrust is a similar gift in that property or investments are donated to the Foundation and the donor receives income from the gift. One of the differences between a gift made in annuity and unitrust is that the unitrust gift is

This will be accomplished through breed promotion, growing the demand for Gelbvieh genetics, member education, research and junior support.” evaluated yearly meaning that the income from the gift may change with appreciation. This type of gift may assist the donor in avoiding capital gains on the sale of appreciated assets. A charitable lead trust is again a gift of property that allows the donor to pass on some of their assets to family while reducing gift or estate taxes. The deduction is received at the time of the gift and after a specified period of time family regains assets.
Revocable gifts Revocable gifts are set up during the donor’s lifetime and can be changed or modified until the donor’s death. Upon death, the gift is made to the Foundation. A popular revocable gift is simply a bequest meaning that upon death, a gift will be made by the donor to the Foundation. A bequest may include a percentage of real estate or a specified dollar amount or asset. Another option would be a trust savings account placed in the name of a depositor “in trust” for the Foundation. Additionally, gifts of life insurance may be set up as a revocable gift. Each of these gifts offers advantages and disadvantages to the donor. Depending on your

It’s important to remember that with all of these options, the gift can be tailored to specifically meet your wishes, no matter how complicated they may be. New Contests Bring New Challenges to the Junior Classic The 2013 Northern Lights Junior Classic will feature new contests including a skill-a-thon and premier breeder award. The cow-calf show will be separate from the heifer show, culminating with naming a supreme champion female award. By Garrett Teeter IT IS THAT time of year again. The junior summer show season is upon us, and I’m sure everyone is staying very busy getting cattle ready to show. This year’s Junior Classic promises to be as challenging and as competitive as ever. Several new contests have been added to Junior Classic and will help add some fresh challenges to our national show. At the fall junior board meeting, we had the pleasure of listening to Dr. Gibb present the goals of the AGA’s long-range strategic plan. After listening to Dr. Gibb’s presentation, the Board decided to incorporate some of the goals of the plan into our experience as juniors. The best way to accomplish this was through the contests, offering something that would be both fun and challenging. The skill-a-thon contest incorporates the strategic plan, a portion of quiz bowl statements, and goes a step further with the carcass contest by providing both carcass evaluation and a meat ID sections. All in all, I believe this contest will be an excellent educational tool, and will help
The second contest created during this busy spring is the premier breeder award. This contest is designed to encourage young breeders to exhibit their own cattle and develop their own herd. The strategic plan is incorporated into the scoring process. By asking participants to fill out a questionnaire, that explores how juniors incorporate parts of the plan in daily activities they perform with their show animals, we hope to encourage greater participation within our organization in the AGA’s plan. A special thanks has to be given to Ms. Emily Griffiths who offered to sponsor the contest and provided the idea to the board. Finally, the Board decided to separate cow-calf pairs from the heifer show. This new level of competition allows for greater participation in the cow-cow show, and allows for more recognition of the future by providing the heifers with their own champion without competition from the cows. By providing dual champions, and crowning an overall champion, we hope that the quality of both the heifers and pairs will be showcased in a greater light than in previous years. FFF

AGA Committees Impact the Beef Business The American Gelbvieh Association is fortunate to have an active committee structure. The ten AGA committees play a vital role in the development and implementation of AGA programs, services and policies. To better align with the AGA’s Impacting the Beef BusinessTM long-range strategic plan, a slight restructuring of the committees was approved by the Board of Directors during their April 2013 meeting. The three core strategies of the strategic plan are breed improvement, breed promotion and member education. To that end, the name of the productivity committee has been changed to breed improvement. The previous marketing and member education committee has been separated into two committees: breed promotion and member education. An active committee process is one of the core grassroots values of the AGA. Members are appointed to serve on these committees by AGA President Rob Arnold, through expressed interest by members at the previous AGA convention, staff recommendations, and Board of Directors approval. The following is the list of AGA members who have been nominated to serve on the committees. Committee appointments are effective through April 1, 2014. Individuals who are unable to serve on their appointed committee are asked to contact the committees’ staff liaison. Thank you in advance to these members for their service on the committees and their dedication to the American Gelbvieh Association. The AGA committee meetings are held at that Annual Convention of the Association and are open to all AGA members. Any member in attendance at a properly convened AGA committee meeting may participate in the discussion of the committee and offer motions for approval, even though they are not an official member of the committee. The 2014 AGA Annual Convention will be held January 8-13 in Denver, Colo. The convention is held in conjunction with the National Western Stock Show.

SHOW SCHEDULES National Level Show Schedules Announced The American Gelbvieh Association supports three national level shows: American Royal, NAILE, and NWSS. Take note of the schedules for all three shows. The AGA looks forward to continuing to see the increased participation from breeders at these shows. By Jennifer Scharpe
The Kansas Gelbvieh Association hosts and sponsors the American Royal Gelbvieh and Balancer Show. Questions about the show can be directed to Gelbvieh Show Superintendent Al Knapp, knappa@ swbell.net, 913-219-6613.
NAILE POUNDING THE TAN bark, or in some cases the green chips, can help promote a breeding program and Gelbvieh and Balancer® cattle in general. The AGA supports three national level open shows: the American Royal, the North American International Livestock Exposition, and the National Western Stock Show. The support includes staff time and travel to help coordinate the show and monetary contributions towards premiums, and varies for each show. Take note of the following dates, details and new changes to this year’s national level shows.
American Royal The American Royal, held in Kansas City, Mo., is the first of the three AGA supported shows. The Gelbvieh and Balancer schedule continues to be during the first weekend of the American Royal. Cattle move-in on Wednesday, October 23 and are required to stay through the weekend. The show will be held at 8:00 a.m. on Saturday, October 26 in Hale Arena. The judge for the 2013 show is Chris Sankey, Council Grove, Kansas. Visit www. americanroyal.com for entry and deadline information.

The show that has perhaps seen the most growth in recent years is the Eastern National Gelbvieh and Balancer Show held at the North American International Livestock Exposition. The show has increased in numbers exhibited and seen the addition of Gelbvieh activities held during the event. Credit for the recent growth should be attributed to the hosts and sponsors of the Gelbvieh and Balancer activities, the Kentucky Gelbvieh Association. Last year saw the addition of the NAILE Showcase Gelbvieh and Balancer sale. The 2013 sale will be held on Tuesday, November 18 at 2:00 p.m. in the NAILE sale arena. Contact David Slaughter at hmslghtr@aol.com or 270-556-4259 for more information. The 2013 show schedule is as follows: Junior Gelbvieh Show is Sunday, November 17; Eastern National Gelbvieh and Balancer show is Tuesday, November 19 at 1:00 p.m. An addition to this year’s show is a heifer futurity, which will be held during the Tuesday show. Visit www.livestockexpo.org for entry and deadline information, or contact Karen Douglas, one of the show superintendents, at 606-564-1498. The American Gelbvieh Association is pleased to announce that it will be hosting a condensed
Create Your Future conference on the morning of Monday, November 18 at the NAILE. A set of outstanding, industry-relevant speakers have been lined up. The purpose of the Create Your Future conference is to provide educational seminars and leadership training to AGA members. This condensed Create your Future conference is open to all members and is scheduled so as to not interfere with the other Gelbvieh activities at the NAILE.
NWSS Perhaps the climax of the show season is the National Western Stock Show. The 2014 NWSS Gelbvieh activities and the AGA Annual Convention will be held January 8-13 in Denver, Colo.
The tentative show schedule is as follows: Saturday, January 11 - Junior Gelbvieh & Balancer Show, Breeder’s Choice Gelbvieh Bull Futurity, and People’s Choice Balancer Bull Futurity; Sunday, January 12 Gelbvieh and Balancer Pen The American Gelbvieh Association Bull Show, is pleased to announce that it will be National hosting a condensed Create Your Future Gelbvieh and conference on the morning of Monday, Balancer Sale; November 18 at the NAILE. Monday, January
13 - National Gelbvieh and Balancer Show. There is one rule change for the 2014 National Western Stock Show, approved by the AGA Board of Directors at their April 2013 meeting. The rule change rescinds the rule that was put into effect for the 2013 show that any female or bull with a BA designation on their registration certificate must show in the Balancer show. This means that a 75 percent Balancer bull or female may show in either the Gelbvieh show or the Balancer show, despite the breed designation on the animal’s registration paper. Show and entry information for the NWSS can be found at www. nationalwestern.com. FFF
