arch is when our family begins to determine the breeding calendar, mating choices and pasture rotation for our spring/ summer season. It is an exciting time of year as we strive to mate the pair that complements one another, improves herd genetics, creates a consistent calf crop and maintains a profitable cattle operation. This is no small task! We often make mistakes, but the rewards of successful matings keep us motivated and moving forward.
Our family utilizes three main thought processes when developing a mating plan:
• past history
• cow genetics
• herd goals.
Though certainly not an exact science, this method can also be applied to the American Gelbvieh Association as we begin our drive to become a household name in the beef business.
The Gelbvieh breed has a rich history driven by a cast of dedicated breeders striving to create a breed of cattle that satisfy the demands of commercial cattlemen. This has led to the development of an industry envied female, one that breeds back quickly every year and brings in a high-performance calf while remaining in the herd for many years. This drive by Gelbvieh and Balancer® breeders, to create great females, has placed the breed in an enviable position as the industry transitions from cow reduction to expansion. Commercial cattlemen will be searching for genetics that bolster their cow herds, all the characteristics discussed previously are provided best by Gelbvieh and Balancer.
In the case of our herd, we study strengths and weaknesses of individual cows and attempt to improve weaknesses with correct matings. As a breed, these same principles apply. The AGA, in partnership with the American Gelbvieh Foundation and Neogen, have dedicated considerable resources to mapping the genetic information of the Gelbvieh and Balancer cowherd. Through the Cow Power project, breeders can gain valuable information about the genetic merit of their cowherd at a reduced price. This information bolsters the accuracy of pedigrees, EPDs and genetic predictability of future generations for the entire breed. Commercial cattlemen can select bulls and replacement females with added predictability and more reliable results. If you have not participated, I encourage you to contact Sarah Mumm, sarah@gelbvieh.org for more information about the Cow Power project. The Gelbvieh breed becomes stronger with more information.
Just as we have goals for the resulting calf crop when developing our mating plan, so should the AGA have goals as to the cattle we produce to help the beef industry move forward – 2024, clearly showed us that we are able to produce large volumes of meat with fewer animals. Record high carcass weights were the story of the year, and that trend has not diminished thus far in 2025. Gelbvieh and Balancer cattle contribute strongly to higher feedlot performance, health and red meat yield. The other side of this trend is the continuing value of higher quality grade carcasses. Prime and upper 2/3 Choice carcasses have achieved record values and the demand for these grades has moved the industry’s thresholds for carcass value considerably. Gelbvieh and
Balancer cattle have made huge strides in driving quality grades up. Now, more than ever, is the time to keep our foot on the accelerator to continue increasing the marbling in the Gelbvieh and Balancer herd. Prime grade cattle continue to become the threshold while Choice cattle have become expected.
Spring is just around the corner with all the excitement of new calves, fresh grass and a renewed season of growth. The AGA is filled with optimism and momentum for the cattle industry. The staff at AGA works each day to help implement the “management plan” set forth in the strategic plan. With your help, we can elevate Gelbvieh and Balancer cattle to a significant place in the commercial cattle supply, both cows and finished cattle. Best of luck calving, and I look forward to seeing you down the road.F

hen we think about the future of the Gelbvieh and Balancer® breed, one thing becomes clear: our youth are our most valuable asset. And as stewards of the breed, we have a responsibility to the next generation of cattlemen and women who will carry the industry forward.
In this issue of Gelbvieh World, you’ll see the highlights of the National Western Stock Show (NWSS) and Cattlemen’s Congress – two events that made for an exciting start to 2025 and a busy January for many of us in the industry. These shows offer incredible marketing opportunities, showcasing the best of the best; they are also where seeds are planted within our future leaders. These events provide a platform for young producers to not only excel in the showring but build a network of peers that will hopefully become friends and industry colleagues.
For those of us who have spent years dedicated to improving and promoting the Gelbvieh and Balancer breed, these shows provide a platform to share our knowledge
and passion with eager young minds. We’ve all seen firsthand how these events can ignite a lifelong commitment to our breed and the cattle industry, for many of us, these shows and the people we were introduced to fueled our own fire for the industry.
If you’ve read the statistics on the average age of agricultural producers in the U.S., you know how important it is for us to open the door as wide as possible for our next generation of producers. In the pages of this issue, you’ll see a few of the ways AGA, AGF and AGJA are creating, facilitating and sponsoring the next generation of Gelbvieh and Balancer producers. Scholarships, shows, and the opportunity to contribute a valuable perspective to the conversation.
It was great to see two exceptional young leaders, Lilyan March and Jayden Carrier, receive the People’s Choice Balancer Bull Futurity and Breeder’s Choice Gelbvieh Bull Futurity scholarships. Both of these young ladies are great examples of dedication and commitment both within their communities and the breed. We also saw nearly 100-head of females exhibited in the junior shows
between NWSS and Cattlemen’s Congress – time and resources we would all agree are well invested by parents, mentors and, of course, the kids themselves.
Finally, one of my favorite sections of Gelbvieh World and Profit Picture each month is the AGJA member contribution. Insightful, articulately written articles that showcase the incredible depth of knowledge these kids have at such a young age; knowledge that, for most, comes from a lifetime within the industry. Many of us have grown up in the AGJA and those experiences and connections continue to serve us well today.
As we move forward, let’s remember that every young person interested and willing to put forth the work is a potential future leader in our industry.
I encourage you to visit with the young people in your life about the opportunities AGJA holds and their place in the cattle industry. Afterall, their success is ultimately our success as a breed and as an industry.F

2025 Herd Assessments are now available for completion on the AGA Online Registry Service. As a reminder, the annual herd assessment process is not automatically completed by AGA’s registry system. Members must log onto the AGA Online Registry Service and fully complete a herd assessment for females in their herd. 2025 Herd Assessments are due March 15. View a written guide to completing herd assessments online at gelbvieh.org
The international letter code for 2025 is ‘N’. All animals within the AGA registry must be assigned a tattoo at registration that contains the proper international letter code. Beginning with calves born in 2018 and later, members can choose the permanent form of identification for that animal however, a tattoo must still be denoted at the time of calf registration for record-keeping purposes. Accepted forms of permanent identification with the AGA are tattoo, EID and freeze brand. The permanent form of identification with the AGA are tattoo, EID and freeze brand. The permanent form of identification denoted in the registry should be permanently affixed to the animal. International codes can be found on the AGA Online Registry Service along the left side of your screen.
The 2024-2025 AGJA board of directors is excited to open the nomination process for the AGJA Junior Breeder of the Year award. wanted to take a moment to reflect on the incredible experiences and successes we shared at both the Cattlemen’s Congress and the National Western Stock Show. These events are pivotal for our industry, providing a unique space for both juniors and seasoned professionals to showcase their dedication to agriculture, while fostering a strong sense of community and tradition.
One of the highlights of this year’s events was the overwhelming success of our raffle ticket sales. The support from everyone who participated was incredible, and I am excited to report that the funds raised will go a long way in supporting the initiatives of the American Gelbvieh Junior Association (AGJA). Thank you to all who purchased tickets and contributed to the success of this fundraiser. Your generosity is helping to ensure that the next generation of cattlemen and women have the resources they need to succeed.
I would also like to extend a heartfelt thank you to Beastrom Ranch of Pierre, South Dakota, who graciously donated this year’s raffle heifer. They put an incredible amount of time and effort into this heifer and their passion for Gelbvieh cattle and the mission of the AGJA were both very evident in this endeavor. This contribution not only provides financial support for the AGJA, but it also exemplifies their deep commitment to the future of agriculture. The donation of such a valuable animal demonstrates a dedication to investing in the youth of our industry, and we are grateful to the Beastrom and Spencer families for their generosity and support of the AGJA.
A huge congratulations to all the juniors who participated in the junior show at both events! The level of talent, passion, and professionalism displayed was truly
inspiring. I’m continuously amazed at how the next generation of cattlemen and women is pushing the boundaries of excellence in both breeding and showmanship. It’s clear that the future of our industry is in good hands. As someone who has had the privilege of showing both as a junior and open exhibitor, I can say firsthand how much these events mean for personal growth and professional development. The experiences I had as a junior—working alongside mentors, learning from fellow exhibitors, and being a part of a larger community—helped shape my passion for this industry. Competing as an open exhibitor later also provided a different perspective, as I was able to see how the skills and relationships, I built in my youth translated into success at a higher level.
For juniors today, these events are not just about competition, they are about growth, education, and building lasting connections. The opportunities to learn from experienced breeders, attend workshops, and participate in AGJA activities are invaluable for anyone looking to get more involved. Whether it’s through showing, attending leadership events, or volunteering, I encourage all juniors to seize the chance to grow within the AGJA and to
take full advantage of the resources and opportunities available through the American Gelbvieh Association (AGA).
As we move forward into another year, I’m excited to see how these events will continue to shape the future of our industry. I encourage all juniors to stay involved, keep pushing for excellence, and continue to build relationships that will carry them through their careers. The AGJA and AGA are committed to supporting you every step of the way, and I can’t wait to see what we will accomplish together. Thank you again to all those who made these events possible, and congratulations once again to the juniors for their remarkable success. Let’s continue to work together to make 2025 another successful year for our association and industry.F

uccess is built on preparation. By completing your female records by the March 15th deadline, you set your herd up for success when it comes time to submit your calf data to the AGA Online Registry Service. Start by administering herd assessments on your females who are 13 months of age or older and disposing of the females you won’t be recording progeny out of for the year. The annual fee for Herd Assessments of $30 per head acts as a one-rate fee that allows for members to administer records on the female’s calf, including recording of data and transfers. Members are encouraged to complete herd assessments prior to the March 15th deadline to avoid late fees.
The following instructions are also available in a print-ready PDF found under the Tutorials and Training tab. To access this tab, select ‘Learn’ and then ‘Tutorials and Training’ on the website Gelbvieh.org. You’ll want to log into your account to locate and select “Herd Mgmt” on the left-hand side of your screen. From the drop-down menu provided, select “HAS Inventory”. Once in the inventory, you will have access to all the females currently listed as active under your ownership along with any others that may be associated with your account if you are listed as the cooperator ID for another herd.
You’ll notice a variety of tabs listed horizontally at the top of the following screen. It’s important to recognize the difference between these tabs so you know which females are listed under each.
Tabs showing “Assessed”, followed by a year (2024, 2023, 2022) signify females
that have already been assessed for the year listed.
The tab reading “Assessment Age” designated females that need to be assessed for the current year. If a female is missing a herd assessment for any reason from a previous year, you can contact the AGA Office to place the missing records, or you can add the needed herd assessment in the birth queue when registering the calf. Don’t forget to double check your “Optional Females” tab for females that are not quite 13 months of age as of January 1st but may be having calves in 2025.
As you view the list of females under the “Assessment Age” tab, you will notice a variety of options available to update the records of all currently active females including placing the assessment, disposing of cull cows and recording exposure data to sires for the 2025 calf crop.
To place the herd assessment on females that are forecasted as dams of 2025 calves to be registered, simply click the 2025 button found to the left of each female’s details under the “Assess For” column, If you do not have any females to dispose of and wish to complete the 2025 herd assessments for all females listed under the “Assessment Age” tab, click the “Complete Yearly HAS Process-Assess all for 2025” button fund in the top right corner of the screen.
PLEASE NOTE: THIS WILL ASSESS ALL OF YOUR ACTIVE FEMALES THAT YOU HAVE NOT DISPOSED OF FOR 2025. You will be asked if you are sure you want to assess ALL females. By selecting to continue and move forward you are agreeing to pay the fee of $30 (if processed before March 15th) for each
female listed on the “Assessment Age” tab at that time.
To dispose of a female, click on the small grey icon to the right of the female that looks like a trash can. Using the dropdown menu provided, select the disposal code/reason that best describes why this specific female is no longer active in your herd. Be sure to select the green checkmark to lock in your disposal code. It is important to remember that disposal of a cow due to transfer into your commercial herd to avoid registering a calf for that year is discouraged. If the female moves from the registered inventory to the commercial herd in one year and is asked to be placed back into the active inventory to register a calf the following year, she will be required to pay for the years she was not active per the AGA rules in keeping consistent records on all animals as part of practicing Total
Herd Reporting (THR). To keep your data as honest and accurate as possible, please record all calves born throughout the year. The use of disposal codes is fundamental to the practicality of and complete process of THR lending itself as a resource that the producer can utilize for future years. Disposal codes are utilized throughout the year, not just during herd assessment “season” and should be used properly regardless of when they are placed on an animal’s records.
While not mandatory, recording exposure data on females can be beneficial for multiple reasons including the convenience of recording the sire’s registration number and dates associated with sire exposure at the same time as the herd assessment, as well as eliminating the need to enter the sire’s registration number when you are ready to register the 2025 calves.
If the female was pasture exposed to a sire, you’ll select the PE button and enter the bull’s registration number along with the date the bull was put in with those females
as well as the date he was removed. Be sure to select the green check mark to the right of those details after entering. If you accidentally select PE and need to return to the main screen to dispose of or select AI, simply click the red “X” button to the right.
If the female was artificially inseminated, you’ll want to select the AI button to the right of the female’s details and enter the sire’s registration number along with the date the female was bred.
If you need to request a printed herd assessment form, please contact the office at your earliest convenience to allow time for those forms to be printed, mailed, completed and returned before the March 15, 2025, deadline to avoid late fees.
As always, if you ever run into problems or have questions, please contact the AGA office at 303-465-2333 or email registry@ gelbveh.org. We are happy to help!F

The 28th Annual Breeder’s Choice Gelbvieh Bull Futurity was held on Saturday, January 11, 2025, in conjunction with the American Gelbvieh Association (AGA) National Shows at the National Western Stock Show in Denver, Colorado. Gelbvieh breeders and supporters initiated the futurity to increase participation in the National Gelbvieh Show, the National Gelbvieh and Balancer® Sale, and to identify the most useful young sires in the Gelbvieh breed. The futurity event is managed by Chris Mitchell.
CLGR CRU Man of Few Words 262M was the winner of this year’s futurity, owned by Grund Gelbvieh of Sharon Springs, Kansas.
CLGR CRU Man of Few Words 262M received the most votes after two rounds of voting to beat out six other entries in the Breeder’s Choice Gelbvieh Bull Futurity. Man of Few Words is an 89.85% purebred Gelbvieh bull born February 12, 2024, and is sired by DBRG Kickstart 2202K. He posts a 77-pound birth weight and an adjusted weaning weight of 861 pounds. This powerful, rugged, homopolled bull combines sheer dimension with an incredible look, along with an impressive set of carcass EPDs, being in the top 1% of the breed for carcass weight and the top 2% of the breed for ribeye, while still being in the top 10% for birth weight numbers.
DCSF Post Rock R.O.I. 153M1 ET, owned by Post Rock Cattle Company of Barnard, Kansas, was one of the runners-up. He is a 93.8% purebred Gelbvieh son of
DCSF Post Rock Icon 136K1 ET born on February 3, 2024, at 76 pounds. This homo-polled bull posted a 731-pound adjusted weaning weight and is backed by two of the best-uddered, soundeststructured, most eye appealing donors at Post Rock on both sides of his pedigree. Both donors continue to produce high sellers and productive cattle year after year at home, while R.O.I. individually boasts an impressive genetic script, being in the top 20% for marbling, 15% for weaning weight, 10% for yearling weight, 15% for carcass weight, and the top 25% for FPI combined with his top 55% numbers for calving ease. He’s a bull with a simple name that makes a bold statement and has the genetic strength and predictors to back it up.
TAU Pipeline 199M, owned by Taubenheim Gelbvieh of Amherst, Nebraska, claimed the other runner-up position in this year’s futurity. He is a 99.9% purebred Gelbvieh bull born on February 21, 2024, at 78 pounds. This homo-polled son of TAU Rush 110H ET, a previous futurity runner up, is the purebred performance bull needed to help move the Gelbvieh breed to the next level, with
an extremely dominant set of EPDs. Claiming a set of numbers in the top 1% of the breed for weaning weight, yearling weight, total maternal, yield grade, ribeye and FPI, the top 4% for carcass weight and still being in the top 25% for milk and marbling, this bull’s genetic value is flat impressive. Yet this high grow, heavy muscled, functional bull still has the phenotype to match with an impressive adjusted weaning weight of 922 pounds.
The champion bull sold as lot one in the National Gelbvieh and Balancer® Sale on Sunday, January 12, 2025, for $21,000 to Jen-Ty Gelbviehs of Canada for full possession and half semen interest.
The Breeder’s Choice Gelbvieh Bull Futurity is limited to 53 membership spots. Spots only come available when an operation does not renew their membership.F

Barwick Gelbvieh of Orleans, Nebraska snagged the championship honors in the 2025 People’s Choice Balancer Bull Futurity with their entry BARG Mic Drop 860M ET. The event was held in conjunction with the American Gelbvieh Association (AGA) National Gelbvieh and Balancer Shows at the National Western Stock Show in Denver, Colorado on Saturday, January 11, 2025. Over $20,000 will be awarded to Barwick Gelbvieh for breeding and exhibiting the futurity champion.
The People’s Choice Balancer Bull Futurity is in its fifteenth year and is organized by Slaughter Sale Management. The event and selection identify elite young Balancer sires that have the potential to be breed leaders.
BARG Mic Drop 860M ET was selected as champion by Balancer futurity members. He was born on February 1, 2024, and is a 50.5% Balancer son of BGGR Blk Gold Payload 6152. Mic Drop’s dam, BEA 6110D ET, was Barwick’s pick of Jim Beastrom’s dispersal sale and is backed by the highly admired female DLW Ms Edison 321A. Backed by generations of productive cows and sired by BGGR Black Gold Payload, Mic Drop will be sure to pass on these traits to continue to produce highly productive, easy-keeping cows and create performance driven bulls. Individually, the homo-black, homo-polled Mic Drop posts an adjusted weaning weight of 802 pounds and an adjusted yearling weight of 1,424 pounds.
Each year, one membership is randomly drawn to receive full possession and half semen interest in the champion bull. Cave Creek Cattle of Charlotte, Tennessee was the winner of this year’s drawing.
The two runners up were CBRO Big Shot 2390L, exhibited by JC Cattle Company of Dwight, Kansas, and RAIL Mile High 409M, entered by Raile Cattle Company of Saint Francis, Kansas. Each runner up received $2,000 in prize money.
CBRO Big Shot 2390L was born on September 21, 2023, and is a 49.6% Balancer son of KBRO Spiked 4 Life 2099H. Big Shot is a stout, calving ease bull with the right kind of grown and eye appeal and a balanced set of EPDs to boot. His dam, CBRO Jessica 2008H, is a true foundation cow that won many a banner for Cody Brown growing up and is now a staple of the program at home. Big Shot’s sire, “Spike,” was the Brown family’s Ring of Gold winning bull that continues to remain a stout, sound and functional bull for the operation at home. With the homo-black, homo-polled Big Shot posting a 719-pound adjusted weaning weight, while starting at a true 68-pound birth weight, breeders are sure to buy in on this fast-growing, calving ease sire.
RAIL Mile High 409M was born January 21, 2024, and is a 51.8% Balancer son of TAU Night Shift 69H. Phenotypically, this homo-black, homo-polled grandson of LD Capitalist 316 starts his power and functionality from the ground up, being big footed, square-toed and comfortably jointed, all while maintaining the right amount of bone. What really makes him the best representative of the Raile program, though, is his super soft, bold rib and smooth front third. This guy still holds his own on paper, being in the top 10% of the breed for weaning weight, stayability and docility, and the top 20% for five more growth, maternal and carcass traits; this guy is sure to make great cows and fast-growing calves alike.
Anyone interested in becoming a futurity member should contact David Slaughter to get their name on the waiting list for the 2026 Balancer Bull Futurity.F

Presented at the National Gelbvieh and Balancer® Show, held in conjunction with the 2025 National Western Stock Show, both the People’s Choice Balancer Futurity and Breeder’s Choice Gelbvieh Futurity Scholarships were awarded. Each scholarship provides the winning recipient with $1,000 to be used for the continuation of their education in their field of choice. Criteria for both scholarship opportunities include active membership within the American Gelbvieh Junior Association (AGJA) and being actively enrolled as a high school senior or college student that has not yet turned 22 as of January 1, 2024. Scholarship funds may be used to attend a two-year or four-year college, university, or technical school.
The 2025 People’s Choice Balancer Bull Futurity scholarship recipient is Lilyan March of Green Top, Missouri. March is the daughter of Bryan and Grace March and is currently a senior at Green City R-1 in Green City, Mo. She plans to attend college at Iowa State University in the fall of 2025 to study Animal Science. March has goals of finding a career in the beef industry post-college. March is currently an active participant in Missouri FFA, currently serving as both her chapter’s Vice President of Community Relations and the Area 3 Historian. She received her Missouri FFA State Degree and was also named her chapter’s Star in Agri-Business. Through both 4-H, FFA and numerous other extra-curricular activities, March has served in many aspects and done so while maintaining her spot on the school honor roll and in National Honor Society, all while continuing to show livestock and be an active participant in the AGJA.
BY TAWNIE DEJONG AUSTIN, M.S.
“My love for the Gelbvieh and Balancer breed started at age 9, when I began showing registered Gelbvieh and Balancer cattle. I began this adventure in 2016, when I joined 4-H and purchased my first Balancer steer from Ertel Cattle Company,” wrote March.
March currently maintains a small herd of Gelbvieh and Balancer cattle, as well as several head of commercial cattle that she continues to breed to registered Gelbvieh bulls. Since getting her start in the Gelbvieh breed, March has had the opportunity to work for Ertel Cattle Company and Mitchell Marketing services, not only learning to raise registered seedstock and to prepare videos and photos for production sales but also getting to attend the last two American Gelbvieh Association (AGA) National Conventions and assist with the preparation and planning of the Breeder’s Choice Gelbvieh Futurity.
Jayden Carrier, the daughter of LeAnn Maude and the late Aaron Carrier, of Hermosa, South Dakota, was selected as the 2025 Breeder’s Choice Gelbvieh Bull Futurity Scholarship. Carrier is currently a junior at Chadron State College in Chadron, Nebraska studying Legal Studies with a minor in Criminal Justice. Carrier is also a graduate of Casper Community College in Casper, Wyoming, where she earned an associate’s degrees in both Paralegal Studies and Criminal Justice. Carrier is a 2023 inductee in the Phi Theta Kappa honor society, a 2023 recipient of the South Dakota Key Award, a current member of the Chadron State College Emerging Eagle Leaders Program, and was involved in National Honor Society, Girl’s State, and 4-H throughout her high school years. She has been actively involved in many community service projects and volunteer organizations
throughout the years and continues to stay active within the Gelbvieh breed.
“Why do you raise Gelbvieh cattle? Why not a more popular breed? I can’t really count the number of times I have been asked some variation of that question, but the answer is easy: I love the Gelbvieh & Balancer breed because of their quiet and gentle nature, as well as the pounds they add at weaning time,” writes Carrier.
Carrier continues to be an active decisionmaker within her family’s Gelbvieh operation in South Dakota and maintains a registered herd herself. Through the Gelbvieh and Balancer Bull Futurities, she has been able to diversify her own operation by purchasing semen packages on former futurity bulls, including RTRT Great Divide, PHG Eminence, and JRI Bottom Line, to name a few. Carrier continues to be an active member of the AGJA, being a finalist for AGJA Breeder of the Year in 2022 and 2023 and an active participant at many junior shows across the Midwest, including Western Junior Livestock Show, Black Hills Stock Show, Northern International Livestock Expo and regional AGJA shows.
Congratulations to both 2025 Bull Futurity Scholarship recipients. If you know of an AGJA member who meets the criteria to apply for an AGJA scholarship like these, we encourage you to reach out and share the opportunities provided through the AGJA, American Gelbvieh Foundation, bull futurities and several memorials. Please contact staff at the AGA office with questions at info@gelbvieh.org or find scholarship information on our website at gelbvieh.org.F
Following the conclusion of the AGA National Gelbvieh and Balancer® Pen Shows, the Premier Breeder and Exhibitor awards were presented. These awards are calculated on a points-based system where results of both the AGA National Open Shows and AGA National Pen Shows count toward the total points tally for both breeder and exhibitor. The 2025 AGA National Premier Breeder was Judd Ranch, Inc. of Pomona, Kansas. The 2025 AGA National Premier Exhibitor was Post Rock Cattle Company of Barnard, Kan., who then received the Sam Tauck Memorial Trophy. The AGA would like to congratulate both exhibitors for their hard work.F
