PRESIDENT’S VIEW
Validate Your Work Now that the hard work of the sale is over, there’s one easy thing AGA members need to do – transfer those registration papers to their new buyers. By Rob Arnold SEEDSTOCK BREEDERS WORK all year for the annual cattle sale, whether it’s a production sale, consignment sale, or private treaty sale. It is the culmination of many years of effort in making breeding decisions, calving, weaning, culling, and developing the bulls that will make the sale. Then add in all the preparation for the sale – putting the catalog together, advertising the sale, contacting previous years’ buyers, and finally having the sale. While this may seem like a long list, seedstock breeders take pride in each item on the list, plus the many other tasks breeders do on a routine basis. Why do we do all this? Aside from it being our livelihood and we enjoy breeding and marketing cattle, in general, we want to provide quality genetics that will help our customers to be more profitable and that will provide a quality eating experience for the beef consumer. There is one final, simple step that will complete this process and validate all the work of a sale. The final step is to transfer all the registration papers of the animals sold to their new buyers. Either sign the back of the registration paper and send it to the AGA office, or complete the transfers 6 | MAY 2014
online through the Online Member Registry system. Transfers are free to all members who have paid their membership dues and herd assessments. For assistance in completing transfers, contact the AGA registration department. One of the goals of the breed promotion core strategy of AGA’s Impacting the Beef BusinessTM long-range strategic plan is to increase transfer rate to 45 percent of the animals registered. During the recent April Board of Directors meeting, we discussed the importance of transfers and what it means to our Association in terms of promotion strength to our commercial producers. Increasing transfers continues to be a significant strategic plan goal. We have made improvements in transfer rate and members are to be commended for that. In the first six months of this current fiscal year, male and female transfers have increased seven percent. This translates to 30 percent of registrations, fiscal year to date. That is a two percent increase in the transfer rate for the same six month time period for the 2012-2013 fiscal year. Even better, the number of new bull buyers has increased 22 percent from the previous year.
It is important to keep these new buyers as our commercial customers by transferring the registration papers. Transferring papers gives the Association another contact point with these new buyers. Bull and female buyers automatically receive nine issues of Gelbvieh World and two issues of The Profit Picture. Additionally, it gives commercial buyers’ access to the newly released Feeder Profit Calculator. Through the AGA’s collaboration with International Genetic Solutions, the Feeder Profit Calculator helps customers market their calves by assessing the genetic and management value of those calves to the feeder and packer. Information is power. By having access to commercial buyers, it allows the AGA to better determine what programs and services would best serve their needs. Knowing what is important to our commercial customers is huge for the Association and the breed to stay relevant in the beef business. The easiest thing we as seedstock breeders can do to keep our customers is to transfer the papers. FFF

EXECUTIVE’S VIEW
Staying Commercially Focused The Association’s Impacting the Beef BusinessTM (IBB) strategic plan has been guiding the AGA since its launch in the summer of 2012. By keeping the plan focused on the needs of our commercial customers and industry trends, the IBB plan will continue to guide the AGA and its membership. By Dr. Jim Gibb BACK IN JANUARY, I was asked during an American Gelbvieh Association Board of Directors meeting about the longevity of a strategic plan and how you make sure “the plan” stays current with the needs of the membership. The AGA Board has implemented a planning process for the strategic plan that is integrated with the Association’s budget development. For example, creation of 2014-2015 AGA budget began with the Board’s April 2014 meeting that was keynoted by Mr. Randy Blach, CEO of CattleFax. And continued with how the IBB plan should be adjusted to account for objectives achieved, objectives to be achieved and new objectives. Randy Blach’s presentation provided much food for thought relative to opportunities for the seedstock sector over the next three to five years. Randy emphasized that productivity will continue to be extremely important despite the expected increase in beef cow numbers, because of the growing demand for beef, both domestically and globally. In fact, the demand for U.S. beef has increased each year since 2010, after falling for six straight years. This growing demand for our product coupled with feed yard over-capacity means that 550 pound feeder calf prices are predicted to average $193 in 2014 and $207 in 2015. Lest anyone think this means that quality production will be less important, please consider Randy’s data that showed that 78 percent of fed cattle are sold on some type of contract. Normally, those contracts involve a carcass pricing grid that provides discounts
8 | MAY 2014
and premiums depending on how well the cattle match the grid’s specifications.
Randy went on to say that when your customers’ cattle sell $80 to $100 above average, they can afford more rapid bull (genetic) turnover. And, he was emphatic that grid marketing is not a fad. It’s here to stay and we better be prepared to produce the genetics that feed yards want to buy in the form of feeder calves. The message is clear and consistent. We must provide our commercial customers with genetics that will enable easy calving, rapid growth, produce quality replacement females, and a reasonable probability of grading Choice. As a reminder, the theme of the breed improvement core strategy of the IBB plan is “Own maternal and stay between the guardrails for all other traits.” Therefore, while much effort has been invested in developing excellent tools for maternal selection, we must not forget the end product. As a service to our members’ customers, the AGA, in partnership with International Genetic Solutions, has launched a Feeder Profit Calculator (FPC) that will assign value to feeder calves. The value is based on sire and maternal grandsire EPDs, plus the herd management practices of those calves. For more information on how the FPC can be implemented by your commercial bull buyers, feel free to contact Frank Padilla, AGA director of breed promotion. The purpose of the FPC is to provide feeder calf buyers with documentation of the genetics that will garner grid premiums and more profit. And, more importantly, make sure your customers can afford to turn over bulls faster to make even more genetic progress. That’s good for your customers and good for you as their genetics supplier. And yes, it’s all in the plan. FFF

Prototype EPDs can be seen for heifer pregnancy, 30-month pregnancy, mature weight, and a research maternal index, as well as several feed efficiency traits.
Requesting Buyer Info for Transfers When requesting buyer numbers to transfer registration papers, members only need to request the buyer information once. Once a buyer is in the AGA database, the same AGA ID number is used for that buyer, no matter how many animals are transferred to that buyer. The number can be used for every animal transferred to that particular buyer. To make transfers easier next time, consider keeping track of those buyer AGA ID numbers right along with your buyer contact information. That way you’ll have easy access to those buyer ID numbers for your next transfers.

BITS ‘N PIECES Gelbvieh Departures Gallagher Rule, of Newkirk, Okla., 83, died Sunday, Dec. 22, 2013, at Kansas Veterans Home in Winfield. Gallagher was born July 12, 1930, to George Dennis Rule and Lenora Mary Evanhhoe Rule in Oklahoma City. On June 8, 1947, at the age of 16 1/2, he joined the U.S. Marine Corps. He retired as a major in 1971, after three tours of duty. In 1970, he, along with four others, founded the American Gelbvieh Association. Gallagher and Lyudmila "Lucy" Lochman were married on May 6, 2009, in Kazakhstan. Gallagher is survived by his wife, Lucy; stepdaughter, Anastasia, of the home; brother, Gordon Rule, and wife, Lucy, of Boone, N.C.; and 17 nephews and nieces. He was preceded in death by his parents. In 1992, Gallagher was inducted into the AGA Hall of Fame. His plague in the Hall of Fame reads: “As the AGA’s first president, Gallagher Rule had the foresight to recognize the Gelbvieh breed for its outstanding possibilities in the United States. The first AGA office was in his dairy barn in Oklahoma. Gallagher, an original AGA incorporator, served with great leadership at a time when there were few assests - just a dream for the future of the breed. He played a major role in envisioning the AGA and then making it happen.”

MANAGEMENT Synchronization Programs can Prove Helpful during Breeding Season Record-high cattle prices early this year mean there’s that much more at stake for the 2014 breeding season, according to Kansas State University beef reproduction specialist, Sandy Johnson. She is reminding producers of tools available to help choose optimal breeding systems and implement them successfully. By Mary Lou Peter, Kansas State University “THE AI COWCULATOR is available for hand-held devices to compare the cost of artificial insemination to natural service,” said Johnson, who is based at the Northwest Area K-State ResearchExtension Center in Colby. The tool was developed based on data generated at the University of Minnesota by then graduate student John Rodgers, working under Cliff Lamb. Rodgers now works in industry and Lamb is with the University of Florida. More information about the AI Cowculator is available at the AI Cowculator Facebook page. The AI Cowculator is built on data from a study of eight herds that compared fixed-time AI to natural service. The study showed the net advantage for use of timed AI was $49 per cow exposed to bulls, Johnson said. Producers input their own values pertaining to such factors as bull maintenance cost, bull purchase price, useful life, AI cost and percent calf crop to assess the economics in their own herd. For those who artificially inseminate their cows, but have limited time and labor, synchronizing estrus is helpful, she

A recent survey conducted by Johnson showed that 79 percent of the synchronization planner users agreed that the planner was easy to use, and similarly thought it made scheduling easier and reduced errors. Beyond Gelbvieh, she currently works as the beef exhibition coordinator for the Kentucky Department of Agriculture. In that role she leads and plans Kentucky Department of Agriculture sponsored shows on a local, state, and national level. She is involved in the planning and conducting of the Kentucky Beef Expo, and the beef shows at the Kentucky State Fair and North American International Livestock Exposition. “Carrie is a great fit for the Gelbvieh junior activities coordinator position. Her knowledge of agriculture and the Gelbvieh breed, teaching experience, and her work in coordinating shows makes her an asset to the AGJA,” said Dr. Jim Gibb, executive director of the American Gelbvieh Association. Carrie earned her master’s degree in animal science from the University of Kentucky in August of 2013. She holds a B.A. in career and technical education, agriculture education option also from the University of Kentucky. She has served as a research and teaching assistant working as an animal science coarse instructor and the coach of the University of Kentucky livestock judging team. “I look forward to using my knowledge and experience in animal science and agriculture education to make a positive impact on the lives of young people and the future of agriculture,” says Carrie. The AGJA sponsors three shows per year - two regional shows and a junior national show. Outside of the showring, members can participate in a wide variety of educational contests to help junior members develop valuable life-long skills. The contests are held during the junior national show, with a select few offered as part of the regional show. Additionally, AGJA participates in the National FFA Convention by having a presence in the Career Expo. Membership in the AGJA is open to all youth who have not yet reached their 22nd birthday prior to January 1 of the calendar year. Membership information can be found at www.gelbvieh.org/juniors or contact the AGA office. Tilghman can be reached at carriet@gelbvieh.org or by calling the American Gelbvieh Association office at 303-465-2333. FFF

VIEW OF THE NUMBERS Parentage Markers vs. Parent Verification – What do They Mean? There are two phrases the AGA uses when describing DNA parentage testing options: parentage markers and parent verification. While similar and often times confusing, these two options are different. Understanding the differences will speed up the parentage testing process. By Susan Willmon and AGA Staff
on file, with GeneSeek, and can easily be accessed by staff should members need to complete parent verification on any progeny. Already having these parentage markers on file will greatly speed up the parent verification process.
Parent verification THE DIFFERENCES IN the parentage testing options can best be summed up this way: parentage markers are needed in order to complete parent verification. Having parentage markers is step 1, and can quickly facilitate step 2 of parent verification.
Parentage markers Parentage markers provide a unique means of identifying an individual animal, similar to a fingerprint. That DNA, in the form of parentage markers, is needed in order to complete the parent verification process. Completing the DNA test for parentage markers simply requires DNA on the individual animal. The parentage markers are kept on file at the AGA’s DNA service provider, GeneSeek®, and are used in the parent verification process of an animal’s sons and daughters. A member can order parentage markers via AGA’s DNA testing process. Parentage markers are free with Genomics Options 1 and 2. Parentage markers can also be ordered as a stand-alone test option for $15. A member who orders parentage marker testing does not receive 16 | MAY 2014
a copy of specific DNA results back, other than confirmation that parentage markers for that particular animal are on file. Animals born outside of the U.S., and recorded or assessed with the American Gelbvieh Association must have parentage markers on file, per AGA rules. In addition, AGA rules require that all donor dams and AI sires complete DNA testing for Genomics Options 1: Gelbvieh Genomic Profile-High Density (GGP-HD), automatically giving that animal parentage markers.
Parent verification is qualifying an individual to its sire and/or dam. During the parent verification process, the sire and dam markers are compared to the markers of the progeny. If the markers match sufficiently then the individual animal qualifies to its particular parent(s). Completing the DNA test for parent verification requires DNA on the individual animal, plus both its parents. (If the parents already have parentage markers on file, then DNA samples of the parents are not needed.) Members must indicate on the DNA testing form to verify the
A good habit for all breeders to do is to pull hair samples on all natural service sires and donor dams, at minimum, to keep a DNA sample library. Place the hair sample in an envelope, label the envelope with the animal’s registration number and prefix/tattoo, and keep in a cool, dry place.
Because parentage markers are needed in order to complete the parent verification process, it is a good idea to complete DNA parentage marker testing on all natural service sires. These parentage markers will remain
animal against listed parents. When parent verification is completed, the member will receive a result that says “Sire Results: Qualified” or “Dam Results: Qualified.” A qualified result means the animal verifies to
that particular parent, completing parent verification for that parent. The alternative is “Sire Results: Not Qualified” or “Dam Results: Not Qualified.” In instances where a parent does not qualify, members should contact the AGA office to suggest alternative sires or dams as the parents of that animal. Parent verification is included at no extra cost under Genomics Option 1 and Genomics Option 2. Again, the member must indicate “Verify against listed parents?” on the order form to complete parent verification. Parent verification can be completed when the standalone test for parentage markers is ordered, if indicated on the order form and parentage markers for the sire and dam are on file. There are several instances where members would complete the parent verification process on an animal. All AI sires must be parent verified. Consignments to the National Gelbvieh and Balancer® Sale must also be parent verifies, per National Sale rules.
DNA sample library A good habit for all breeders to do is to pull hair samples on all natural service sires and donor dams, at minimum, to keep a DNA sample library. Place the hair sample in an envelope, label the envelope with the animal’s registration number and prefix/ tattoo, and place it in your DNA library. The library should be kept in a cool dry place. That way, should you need to do any DNA testing, you have the sample readily accessible. Rather than bringing the animal up from pasture – or if the animal dies – all you have to do is go to your DNA sample library.
There is one additional clarification about DNA testing options that members should take note of. When members order Genomics Option 1 or Genomics Option 2, they no longer receive an IGENTIY® profile. Instead, members should use these two testing options to receive genomicenhanced EPDs. If members are unsure about what test to order for their desired DNA results, please contact Kari Otteman White, AGA breed improvement/data analysts at kario@gelbvieh.org or 303-4652333 to discuss the DNA testing options.
For questions or more information about DNA testing, visit the DNA testing page under the Education Center at Gelbvieh. org. Or contact the AGA office at 303-465-2333. FFF
Quick Guide to DNA Parentage Testing • Parentage markers are the fingerprint of an animal and required to complete parent verification. The markers are kept on file at the AGA’s service provider, GeneSeek®. • Parent verification is matching up (qualifying) the markers of a progeny to its parents. • Donor dams and foreign animals are required to have parentage markers on file. • AI sires and national sale consignments are required to complete parent verification. • It is recommended to have parentage markers on file for all natural service sires. • Parentage markers are free with AGA Genomics Options 1 and 2. Parent verification is also free with these two tests, if member indicates “Verify against listed parents?” on the order form. • Parentage markers can be ordered as a stand-alone DNA test for $15. Parent verification is included in this test, if member indicates “Verify against listed parents?” on the order form. • Breeders should get in the habit of pulling hair samples on natural service sires and donor dams, at minimum, to keep in their DNA sample library.

Define Your Success Success has a different meaning to people. It is an individual thing. To each their own as to how they measure or what they want to include in how they define success. By Frank Padilla IT HAS BEEN a very successful sale season for members. Sale averages show Gelbvieh and Balancer® bulls selling $800 to $1,000 above a year ago. The demand for females has been strong with sale prices averaging well above last year. The total gross dollar amount of sales for most producers is also well above a year ago.

Some define success as an improved sale average and/ or a higher dollar amount in gross sales. When they look at their buyers list they see first time buyers making purchases. Positive genetic trends of in herd analysis most certainly should be included in defining the success of a program. A commercial producer may define success as percent calf crop per cow exposed. They may define it in higher weaning weights or in the price received for their calves when sold. It can and should include several areas not unlike a report card with grades for various classes with a final cumulative grade point average. The mission statement of the American Gelbvieh Association reads, “The American Gelbvieh Association is dedicated to its mission of Recording, promoting and improving Gelbvieh cattle.” On the surface it is a simplistic statement. As one drills into the statement there is a multitude of actions taking place to make the mission statement a reality for members and users of Gelbvieh cattle. It’s an ongoing process in each of the three areas within the mission statement. The number of inquiries submitted to the AGA office for information about Gelbvieh cattle is up significantly over the same period a year ago. The number of first time non-member bull buyers is 11 percent greater than during the same period a year ago. Breed promotion reach has increased to more than 1,405,300 impressions compared to 715,551 during the same time frame last year. This includes magazine circulation, website visits, YouTube views, as well as inserts, national print and digital advertising, and trade shows. The circulation of the insert has been expanded by six percent over last year and 108 percent since 2009-2010. Advertising revenue for Gelbvieh World and Gelbvieh Media Productions has risen seven percent when compared to the same period of time last year. These numbers define success. The progressive and forward thinking actions of membership and the AGA Board of Directors have positioned Gelbvieh to remain industry relevant today

All of these new breed improvement tools have been set forth in the AGA long range strategic plan, Impacting the Beef BusinessTM. These actions define success. Membership can also look forward to a new, more user friendly, online registry system. Incorporated into this new system, provided by DigitalBeef, will be tools for breeders to use to easily access their data and to incorporate it into their customer service, marketing, and overall herd improvement programs. The financial input by membership through paid herd assessments (HAS) and membership fees provide the funding for the programs and services for members and stakeholders. The AGA’s ability to provide industry relevant updated services, tools, and programs to members to assist in achieving their goals is one way to define the success of the Association. We thank those who have submitted your HAS. It allows us to serve you. If you have not yet done so please submit your HAS. If you have any questions, feel free to contact the staff at AGA for assistance. The number of HAS submitted is the most important number as we define the success of the American Gelbvieh Association and most importantly members and stakeholders in the future. Genetics that Raise the Bar
JUNIOR VOICE
Leadership Opportunities There are other opportunities at junior nationals, such as taking part in the mentor/protégé program. Through this program, you can welcome new members just like the mentors who welcomed you into the AGJA at your first junior nationals by playing ice-breaker games and getting to know someone new. You can be that person that a new member will always remember as the person who made them feel welcomed in the American Gelbvieh Junior Association.
With the AGJA 2014 Barnyard Classic coming up on June 29-July 4, in Sioux Falls, S.D., you may be starting to pick your show string, booking hotels, studying quiz bowl statements, and getting excited to have a great reunion with your friends you’ve made over the years. There’s so much more to look forward to. By Nicole Mattison HAVE YOU EVER felt as if you’re a better leader than a follower? Have you ever felt like you want to do something more to help people out at junior nationals? What if I told you there were all sorts of opportunities for you to help people out and use your leadership skills you’ve gained over the years? You can compete to be a junior or intermediate ambassador, or you can run for the AGJA Board of Directors! Now, don’t let the speeches psych you out. You’d be giving your speeches in front of your friends who have the same passion towards the Gelbvieh breed as you do. These speeches allow your fellow AGJA members to get to know who you are, learn about your Gelbvieh and Balancer® experiences, as well as get to see a side of your personality. These roles, either as an ambassador or a Director, allow you to represent and promote the Gelbvieh and Balancer breed.
Contests are another way to be a leader. Such contests like quiz bowl, allow you to be the leader of your team and other contests like skill-a-thon contest, sales talk, and judging contest allow you to not only compete, but you also have the opportunity to study your quiz bowl statements with your team, to give examples of a sales talk, and talk through how you would place heifers in a class. Take advantage of these opportunities. Even something as little as playing cards, saying “hi” or even sitting down and eating with someone you’ve never talked to goes a long way. These little acts of leadership and kindness can leave that person to remember your name and face. I hope to see you all at the 2014 Barnyard Classic in Sioux Falls, South Dakota! FFF

Education • Research • Scholarship Scholarship Opportunities through the American Gelbvieh Foundation Every year during the American Gelbvieh Junior Association (AGJA) Junior Classic, the American Gelbvieh Foundation awards up to $4,500 in scholarships to deserving junior members. Scholarship applications are due June 1. THERE ARE THREE core principles of the American Gelbvieh Foundation: education, research, and scholarship. Probably the most visible of these principles is scholarship. The scholarships are spotlighted during the AGJA Junior Classic, which is the annual junior national Gelbvieh and Balancer® show held during the summer. During the 2014 AGJA Barnyard Classic, junior members have the opportunity to compete for up to $4,500 in scholarship money awarded through six scholarships. Those scholarships included: •
$1,000 Earl Buss Memorial Scholarship
•
$1,000 Leness Hall Memorial Scholarship
•
$500 Rea Memorial Scholarship
•
$750 AGJA Scholarships (up to two scholarships awarded)
•
$500 AGJA Scholarship
Applicants must be an active member of the AGJA. Applicants must be at least a graduating high school senior as of January 1 of the current year up through college age students that can be 21 years of age on January 1 of the current year. Scholarship money must be used to attend a two- or four-year college or university. Scholarship applications can be downloaded from the Barnyard Classic webpage,
on the AGJA Events page under the Juniors tab at Gelbvieh.org. Two of the memorial scholarships are in honor of the AGA’s founding fathers, Earl Buss and Leness Hall. Earl Buss was an original signor of the AGA’s Articles of Incorporation, served as AGA president, and was instrumental in purchasing the current AGA building. As well, Buss is a member of the AGA Hall of Fame. Leness Hall was the director of international marketing with Carnation Genetics and is responsible for leading the charge to bring Gelbvieh to the United States. Hall is also a member of the Hall of Fame. Bob Rea, Sr., established a memorial scholarship after he judged scholarship applications during a Junior Classic event. Moved by the talent and promise of such deserving applicants, Bob returned home to create the scholarship and annually commits to his goal of helping a worthy AGJA member. Many parents and students know that any scholarship opportunity goes a long way towards reaching academic goals. Previous scholarship recipients have gone on to be influential, not only within the Gelbvieh breed, but within the beef industry. Increasing scholarship opportunities are made possible through the growth of the American Gelbvieh Foundation. Contributions to the scholarship program can be made by making a tax-free donation to the American Gelbvieh Foundation and designating it for scholarship use. Contact the American Gelbvieh Association for more information on how you can support youth scholarships through the Gelbvieh Foundation. FFF

A BIG CROWD was on hand March 19 for Eagle Pass Ranch’s 2014 Verified Feed Efficient Bull Sale. Nice weather greeted buyers from eight different states who attended the sale at the ranch near Highmore, S.D. The day began with a tribute to Rodney Martin, a ranch employee who was killed in an accident on the ranch last fall. His step-father, Tom Eagle Staff, presented a star quilt honoring the memory of Rodney, offering it on behalf of the family to the buyer of the highest selling SimAngus bull. At the end of the sale, the quilt was presented to the Farlee Ranch, Dupree, S.D., who selected Lot 162, a 3C Pasque Y1539 SimAngus son for $7,250. His EPDs included BW 2.4, WW 82 and YW 131. At Eagle Pass, they are identifying those cattle lines that are “Verified Feed Efficient.” They actively selecting for feed-efficient cattle by measuring the feed consumed by each animal. They use the Grow Safe feed intake
system to measure the RFI or Residual Feed Intake on each animal. Eagle Pass Ranch has seen a whole herd reduction in pounds of feed fed to pounds of weight gained from 5.75:1 to 5.10:1; a whopping 15% cost reduction in just one generation of feed intake selection. The top-selling black Balancer bull, Lot 70, was purchased by Allan Steward, Chelsea, S.D., for $7,250. This impressive EGL Northern Dancer son was one of the top indexing feed efficiency bulls in the sale, gaining over 4.5 lbs/day on test with an RFI of -3.87. Not to be outdone, the top-selling red Balancer bull also sold for $7,250. Arden Hanson, Brooten, Minn., purchased Lot 80, a Boxed Beef son out of the National Champion Gelbvieh donor dam EGL Farah. The high-selling bull overall for the day was Lot 174, a powerhouse purebred Angus son out of Eagle Pass’ resident Angus herdsire, Connealy Protégé. This much-talked-about bull led off the Angus portion of the sale, and when the bidding finished, Hartley Angus Ranch, Stephenville, Texas, had the top bid at $10,000. This outstanding Angus herdsire prospect scanned an impressive 5.54 percent IMF, while gaining nearly 4 pounds per day on test. Top volume buyers on the day were Flying V Bar Ranch, Santa Barbara, Calif.; Mound Valley Cattle Co., Thatcher, Idaho; Hamilton Farms, Hitchcock, S.D.; and F5 Genetics, Kimball, Minn. FFF
