• 3/4 Gelbvieh, 1/4 Angus BASE PRICE $2,800 • Red, Double Polled • Dam is a Dam of Merit • First son to sell out of our O-Reilly Factor bull, he was our pick at Kleinschmidt Farms 2014 sale • Moderate, thick, easy keeping kind of bull with an excellent disposition

We would like to welcome you to our 18th Annual Open House and Private Treaty Kickoff Sale. We hope this finds you all doing well and 2015 was a rewarding and prosperous year and 2016 will be the same. A big thanks to all our past customers, we realize how important your seed stock purchases are and how they affect your cowherd for years to come. We really do appreciate your trust and interest in our program. 2015 has been an interesting year with tornado’s and record rainfall in May to extremely dry conditions starting in August, then we had big rains in December. 2016 is starting out the same way with blizzard Kayla. We should have plenty of grass this spring. It is still a good time to be in the cattle market, we may not have record prices, but the market is still pretty good. The offering this year will consist of 32 yearling bulls, purebreds and balancers, red and black (several homozygous black) and 100% polled. These bulls had no creep will on the cow and then were weaned on a high roughage diet. They are bred and feed with the commercial man in mind. The bulls have all been DNA tested and have the Genomic Enhanced EPD’s for added accuracy. All bulls have tested negative for BVD-PI. The bulls will all be semen tested by Dr. Wulf at Red Cloud Animal Health and will carry a first breeding season guarantee. There will be a link to the videos of each individual bull on our website

gelbviehbulls.com.

Bidding Procedures for our Private Treaty Sale: • When you have made your selections of bulls (prior to 1:00 p.m.) place your buyer’s number on the card located on the pen for that lot or lots. • At 1:00 p.m., the bulls with more than one buyer’s number will be decided by private auction. The bulls with the most buyer numbers will be bid off first. The bidders will be announced. • A deck of cards will be used to determine the order of bidding. Each bidder will select a card. The one with the highest card will own the bull IF the other bidders do not raise the bid on the base price. The person with the next highest card has the option to raise the price by $100.00 if they desire. Every card holder will have a chance to raise the bid. This will continue until only one buyer remains, giving every buyer the same equal opportunity to buy any bull we have to offer. • The unsuccessful bidders will have a few minutes to put their number on any other available bull. We recommend that you have your second choice in mind. • The bid-offs will continue until all bulls having multiple bidders have been sold. • If only one buyer number is on a bull - that person will own that bull at the base price listed. • Bulls not sold on March 7th will be available for sale private treaty and will be priced at that time.

AGA GE-EPDs

Notes

How Genomic-Enhanced EPDs Impact Bull Buying Decisions American Gelbvieh Association’s (AGA) Genomic-Enhanced EPDs (GE-EPDs) provide Gelbvieh and Balancer Ž breeders and their commercial producers the ability to more accurately identify young individuals with the right genetics needed to accelerate genetic improvement in their respective herds. GE-EPDs result in more accurate EPDs for bulls and females two to four years sooner when compared to using pedigree and performance information alone. The information can be used to more accurately select sires that excel in feedlot and carcass traits or choose bulls that can be used on replacement heifers with increased confidence. Bottom line, GE-EPDs allow bull buyers to make smarter, better informed bull and female buying decisions backed by more accurate EPDs. This saves time and money, reduces risk and accelerates the rate of genetic progress. Contact the AGA to find out more about GE-EPDs by calling 303-465-2333 or visiting the AGA website at http://www.gelbvieh.org/ education/epdresearch/research.html. Calving ease maternal (CEM): Represented as percent of unassisted births in a sire’s first-calving daughters. A higher number represents more favorable calving ease. This EPD is important to a rancher’s bottom line because it predicts which animals produce daughters with a genetic pre-disposition to calve unassisted as heifers. Heifer Pregnancy (HP): Predicts the probability that a bull’s daughters will become pregnant as first-calf heifers in a regular breeding season, expressed as a percent. A higher value of this EPD is favorable, meaning that a higher percentage of a sire’s daughters get pregnant as first calf heifers compared to other sires in his contemporary group. 30-Month Pregnancy (Pg30): Predicts the probability that a bull’s daughters will become pregnant and calve at three years of age, given that they calved as first-calf heifers. This EPD is expressed as a percent, again, with a higher number being more favorable meaning a higher percentage of a sire’s daughters will calve at three years of age, given they calved as first-calf heifers. Stayability (ST): Predicts the genetic difference, in terms of percent probability, that a bull’s daughters will stay productive within a herd to at least six years of age. The Stayability EPD is one of the best measures currently available to compare a bull’s ability to produce females with reproductive longevity.

Growth Traits

Carcass CEM 8

Listed below are the definitions of American Gelbvieh Association EPDs and the units in which they are published. The EPDs with an asterisk (*) next to the names are available to members only. Calving Ease Direct (CE): Percent of unassisted births of a bull’s calves when he is used on heifers. A higher number is favorable, meaning better calving ease. This EPD can be vital to a rancher looking to decrease the amount of calves pulled in his herd. Milk (Milk): The genetic ability of a sire’s daughters to produce milk expressed in pounds of weaning weight.

Birth Weight (BW): Predicts the difference, in pounds, for birth weight of the calf. Weaning Weight (WW): Predicts the difference, in pounds, for weaning weight (adjusted to age of dam and a standard 205 days of age). This is an indicator of growth from birth to weaning. Yearling Weight (YW): Predicts the expected difference, in pounds, for yearling weight (adjusted to a standard 365 days of age). This is an indicator of growth from birth to yearling. *Mature Weight EPD (MW): Predicts the average difference in pounds of mature weight of a sire’s progeny compared to their contemporaries.

Carcass Traits Yield Grade (YG): Differences in yield grade score, which is a predictor of percent retail product. Smaller values suggest that progeny will have a better lean to fat ratio. Carcass Weight (CW): Differences in pounds of hot carcass weight, adjusted to an industry standard age endpoint. Ribeye Area (REA): difference in ribeye area in inches between the 12th and 13th rib. Greater ribeye areas are preferable. Marbling (MB): Predicts the differences in the degree of marbling within the ribeye as expressed in marbling score units. Greater marbling numbers are preferable and are an indicator of higher carcass quality grades. Fat (FT): Differences for fat thickness, in inches, for a carcass over the 12th rib, smaller numbers of fat thickness are preferable as excess fat can be detrimental to yield grade.

Efficiency Traits Dry Matter Intake (DMI): Represents the average daily dry matter intake per day consumed in pounds. A negative or lesser value is more favorable. For example, Bull A has a DMI EPD of .15 and Bull B has a DMI EPD of -.20, so the progeny of Bull B consume, on average, .35 pound less dry matter per day than progeny from Bull A. *Average Daily Gain (ADG): Difference in average daily gain in pounds based on animal’s performance during a feed intake test period. *Residual Feed Intake (RFI): Defined as the difference between an animal’s actual daily feed intake and its predicted daily intake based on growth rate and body size. Animals with a positive RFI value are deemed more inefficient because they consume more than expected while animals with a negative RFI value are considered more efficient because they consume less than expected.

What Is An Index?

Notes

Indexed are tools that allow you to select for several EPDs at once, making selections more efficient than selecting on one trait at a time. Indexes weigh traits based on their importance to a producer’s bottom line by using a trait’s economic and genetic value. Indexes are a good way to put selection emphasis on traits that are economically relevant.

Total Maternal (TM): An index that combines growth and milk information as a prediction of the weaning weight performance of calves from a sire’s daughters. As an index, this value is not reported with an accompanying accuracy. A greater TM value means a mother that returns comparatively higher weaning weights on her calves. TM Index: MK EPD + 1/2 WW EPD $Cow: Represents the genetic value in dollars of profit of an animal when retained as a replacement female relative to other animals in the herd. A higher number represents more profitable genetics for maternal productivity. $Cow will serve producers in selecting bulls that will sire daughters with stayability and reproductive efficiency as well as other traits that lead to profitability in a production system, such as milk, calving ease, moderate mature weight and the ability of calves to gain. A female’s genetics also influence the performance of her calves in the feedlot and at slaughter, so traits such as feed efficiency and carcass value are also included in $Cow. Efficiency Profit Index (EPI): An economic selection index developed to aid producers in selecting for more feed efficient cattle that still have acceptable amounts of gain. The EPI provides slight negative pressure on intake, while keeping gain at a constant value. By selecting on this index, producers will be able to find those animals that gain the same amount as their contemporaries while eating less. Feeder Profit Index (FPI): An economic selection index designed to aid producers in selecting sires whose progeny will perform in the feedlot and are sold on grade and yield. Well ranking sires for FPI have higher marbling and carcass weight than their contemporaries. As a terminal index, little emphasis is put on maternal traits such as stayability and calving ease.

MLM Gelbvieh ranks 10th in the nation as owner of Dam’s of Merit and Dam’s of Distinction.

Gelbvieh breeder recognized for outstanding productivity

MLM Gelbvieh Marlin Meyer Superior, Neb. was recently recognized by the American Gelbvieh Association (AGA) as the owner of 31 Gelbvieh cows exhibiting the consistent maternal efficiency typical of "The Continental Breed of Choice." The AGA has designated these outstanding beef females as Dam of Merit and Dam of Distinction. Maternal productivity plays a major role in profitable beef production, as nearly 60 percent of the cost of producing a pound of beef can be attributed to the cow herd. Considerable economic research has demonstrated that fertility and calving ease followed by milk, growth and carcass cutability have the biggest influence on profit in a retained ownership (conception to carcass) system. Commercial cattlemen agree that Gelbvieh have strong maternal attributes with the added benefits of fast growth and carcass cutability. Given the increased emphasis on efficient beef production, the Gelbvieh breed is in an excellent position to increase its influence on the beef industry. The title "Dam of Merit" recognizes cows that meet strict selection criteria including early puberty and conception, regular calving intervals, and above-average weaning weights on at least three calves. Of the 38,304 active cows in the Gelbvieh breed, only 5.2 percent qualify for Dam of Merit. The "Dam of Distinction" honor recognizes cows that meet the same high standards for superior, long-term productivity with at least eight calves. Just 1.0 percent of all active Gelbvieh cows qualify for this elite group. For more information on Gelbvieh cattle and AGA programs, contact the American Gelbvieh Association at 10900 Dover Street, Westminster, CO 80021, or telephone (303) 465-2333.

AGA GE-EPDs
