The Makings of a Good Cow
do their job well every year without a lot of fanfare.
The good ones don’t require much fanfare. The good ones just do the good work quietly. By John Carrel

hen I remembered that November’s Gelbvieh World focused on the Gelbvieh cow, I breathed a sigh of relief. Writing articles is not my strong suit, but I can talk about the positive attributes of the Gelbvieh cow all day long—they may have to rein me in on this one.
In our country where we “run in the rocks” as my brother says, this is essential to longevity. If our bulls or cows can’t stay sound in our terrain they probably won’t hold up in our customers’ environment. Gelbvieh and Balancers excel in the soundness traits. This adds to their longevity and ultimately to our bottom line. I am a big believer in balanced trait selection, but must admit I am a stickler on structure, feet and legs included. If they can’t get around it is hard to worry about anything else. I’m also a stickler on udder quality. We simply don’t have time for poor udders! There are a lot of other more productive things I can be doing in subzero weather than suckling a calf. Our crew is quick to point out a cow that has a poor udder when she calves so we can get rid of her. It is important to write them down at calving because you can’t always tell who they
One of the biggest drivers of individual cow profitability on our outfit is longevity. Progressing Forward One Convention at a Time By Megan Slater
T
he upcoming 49th Annual American Gelbvieh Association National Convention in Billings, Montana, marks the fifth AGA convention (in recent history) that is a standalone event. With this being a small milestone number, let’s take a look back at some of the recent AGA National Conventions. January 2015 was the last year the AGA held its annual meeting in conjunction with the National Western Stock Show. That December, the first standalone convention was held in Kansas City, Missouri, and was themed “Moving at the Speed of Change.” This theme really encompassed AGA at the time, as 2015 was a big year for the AGA and it was capped off with an event resulting in over a 100% increase in attendance at the annual meeting. Committee meetings were brought back to face-to-face meetings, and it was also where the first Cattlemen’s Profit Roundup took place, which is now an annual event and a favorite amongst many convention attendees. The next year, in 2016, the AGA hosted its 46th Annual American Gelbvieh Association National Convention in Lincoln, Nebraska. That year’s theme was “Meeting Modern Industry Demands” and is also the theme for the current AGA strategic plan, which was introduced to the membership during that event. This theme has now become a slogan for the association and captures AGA goals into one sentence. Modern is defined as relating to the present or recent times as opposed to the remote past. Although it is always good to remember where you came from, you cannot move forward if you are always looking back. As we continue progressing and moving forward it is always important that both the association and the breed are meeting the demands of today’s beef industry and remaining relevant. In 2017, the AGA went to Wichita, Kansas, for the 47 Annual AGA National Convention which was themed “Meeting Modern Industry Demands: Setting th
8 | NOVEMBER 2019
the Standard”. This convention was a big one for the AGA, not only from an attendance standpoint, but also the business that was accomplished during this meeting. At this convention, the membership voted to release BOLTpowered expected progeny differences (EPDs) as soon as they were available. This was a big step for the membership and truly showed their desire to keep AGA relevant by adopting the latest and best technology available to describe Gelbvieh and Balancer cattle. Cattlemen’s Profit Roundup that year featured speakers such as Donnell Brown, RA Brown Ranch, and Kevin Unger, Lincoln County Feeders and Leachman Cattle of Colorado, who offered outside perspectives on what today’s beef industry demands from seedstock producers and their commercial customers. AGA members came away from this convention united and ready to set the new standard for AGA and the Gelbvieh breed. 2018 was another big year for the AGA and it culminated with the AGA National Convention traveling east to Nashville, Tennessee. This convention saw good attendance from members all across the country. During this convention, which was themed “Meeting Modern Industry Demands: Raising the Bar,” attendees heard from staff as they gave updates on the happenings throughout the year, including the AGA’s transition to single-step BOLT-powered EPDs, the launch of the new Balancer® Edge age and source verification program, and the AGA office move to Lincoln, Nebraska. The event left attendees motivated to raise the bar on the standards for improving and promoting the Gelbvieh breed. This year we are headed to Billings, Montana, December 4-6, where the theme is “Meeting Modern Industry Demands: Reaching New Heights.” This year’s convention will feature a great lineup of speakers who are sure to provide insight on today’s cattle business for not only members, but also for commercial customers as well. The AGA staff knows that it’s not easy to leave a cattle operation this time of the year, but we strive to make the AGA convention worthwhile for attendees to ensure you get the most out of your time at the event. More information, including the convention schedule, general event information, convention sessions highlight, and a feature on things to do in Billings can be found on pages 14-15 and 26-27 of this edition of Gelbvieh World. I look forward to seeing many of you at the AGA National Convention this year as we prepare to work together to reach new heights. D

GW OVER THE FENCE
Over the Fence with K-State Research and Extension Beef System Specialists By Jake Renner
S
andy Johnson, Ph.D., and Jaymelynn Farney, Ph.D., serve as beef system specialists for K-State Research and Extension (KSRE) in both the northwest region and southeast region, respectively. As statewide network of educators, KSRE provides unbiased researched-based information at the local, regional, and state level in multiple areas including the food and fiber system, youth development and community vitality. Join us as we explore management considerations that should be made to both produce and promote a viable and sustainable replacement heifer program.
What management tools would you recommend producers implement to focus on developing a strong replacement heifer program? “We know that keeping the correct heifers to become replacements is crucial to your future herd genetics,” Farney said. Both Johnson and Farney agree producers should select a sire with a strong maternal calving ease expected progeny difference (EPD) when selecting sires for the production of future replacement heifers. In doing so it’s also important to pay attention to other EPDs that may be relevant to the performance goals of your herd. Additionally, certain management practices should be considered when breeding replacement females. “Breed replacement heifers to high accuracy calving ease sires available via AI to minimize calving difficulty and still obtain other performance goals. Estrus synchronization makes AI easier to use in most operations. In most cases, start replacement breeding season two weeks ahead of mature cows and use a short breeding season, 45 days or less, on yearling heifers. Or only retain those that conceive in the first 45 days, which
10 | NOVEMBER 2019
requires timely pregnancy detection if the bull(s) remains in place,” Johnson said.
How important is record keeping in a replacement program? Record keeping is vital to any successful breeding program. Keep records and benchmarks to identify weaknesses in the heifer program and reproductive performance. “Replacement females that are born early and subsequently conceive early the first breeding season stay in the herd longer (year or more) and wean nearly an additional calf in total weaning weight in a lifetime. Information to identify and retain those females is economically significant. For some important traits such as udder score, temperament, feet and legs, the only information available to use for selection pressure is from within the herd,” Johnson said. Furthermore, always recognize the resources that you have available at your disposal as well. Leverage expertise of Extension personnel, herd veterinarians, seedstock providers, and others to critique or suggest improvements along the way.
What would you say are the top three things to consider when planning for the future of your cowherd? 1. Develop a strategic plan that supports your operational goals. Have goals that are clear, measurable, and fit your market. 2. What are the strengths and weaknesses of the existing herd as it pertains to those goals? Do your genetics fit your environment? Have clear and measurable goals that fit your market. 3. Ask yourself, “What will it take to capture additional value in my target market?” Evaluate different marketing strategies and develop your cattle to fit these so they are better able to capture the greatest economic value.
How should you decide which females to retain? It’s not always easy to decide which heifers to retain year to year. Johnson and Farney believe in a few key concepts to keep in mind when making those decisions.
OVER THE FENCE GW Retain heifer calves that are born early (first 2 cycles or less) and will be most likely to conceive in first 45 days of the breeding season. Also, avoid the temptation to only select the biggest heifers, which may result in an unintended increase in mature cow size. If this is not a concern of yours, be sure to concentrate on the end goal of these females and how they play into your overall herd goal. Don’t be afraid to cull heifers with poor feet, legs and structure and those with bad temperaments. In the long run, these females will cause more financial burden and risk than they will a return on investment. Remember the importance of sire selection for replacement heifers because it can have a large impact on the herd, not just individual heifers. Sire selection is a key part in developing heifers for the progression of your breeding program. Avoid single trait selection and using the same bull for the entire herd at breeding. This can cause limited options down the road when deciding which females will remain in the herd as replacements.
Johnson also emphasizes the importance of selecting sires of replacement females making sure mature size and milk production fit the environment. It’s important to make sure that producers are developing a herd that won’t simply survive in their environment, but thrive well into the future.
What considerations should be made when marketing replacement females to customers? 1. Know what your customer wants. 2. Cull what needs to be culled, i.e. bad temperament, feet/leg problems. 3. Incorporate an appropriate vaccination program for your region. 4. Deliver what you promise. Be transparent. 5. Follow-up with those that purchase heifers and collect feedback. D
SAVE THE
DATE
Reflect on the success of your mature cows and utilize the records you’ve kept over the years, especially calving interval dates and longevity. Focus on potential replacement heifers from older cows that have consistently calved early that should also fit in your production system and environment.
Developing heifers that are appropriate size and condition for their breed and age and breeding heifers to calve close to 2 years of age,” Farney said.
How does one build value in a replacement heifer program? Johnson explains, “Reproduction is the single most important economic trait for cow/calf producers. What I perceive as good “value” would be to have heifers that have a calf every year and calve early in the calving period (older calves weigh more at weaning). Selecting replacements from the oldest heifers and using a short breeding season will set heifers up to do just that. Crossbred females produce 23% more weaning weight per cow exposed. Commercial producers need crossbred cows. Develop a herd health plan in conjunction with your veterinarian and provide adequate nutrition so they build good immunity.” “Use high accuracy, high calving ease bulls (top 15%-20% of breed) for your heifers (not a bull with an actual low birth weight); utilize tools such as pelvic measurement, accurate estimated calving dates (use things like early ultrasound to fetal age) and then group by short calving windows; typically two weeks.

The AGA encourages members to use TSUs (tissue sampling units) as their primary way to collect a DNA sample. According to Allflex, TSUs are the highest performing sample collection. TSU samples can be taken in seconds with a single-squeeze motion that collects a sample with minimum distress to the animal. With the proper collection handling, the TSU vials keep the sample uncontaminated and sealed to minimize test failure and the need for resampling.

49TH ANNUAL AGA NATIONAL CONVENTION
Convention Session Highlights
T
he lineup of sessions at the 49th Annual American Gelbvieh Association National Convention has something for each Gelbvieh and Balancer® stakeholder to enjoy. This year’s event is filled with important association business, information from some of the industry’s top professionals, and plenty of opportunities for networking and catching up with old friends from within the breed.
Opening General Session and Kick-Off Reception The convention will officially kick-off at the opening general session taking place at 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, December 4. This session will get you geared up for the two and half days that lie ahead. Hear AGA leadership, President John Carrel and Executive Director Megan Slater, speak about the association’s happenings through the past year, how Gelbvieh and Balancer are meeting modern industry demands, and prepare the attendees for the coming days of convention. After an afternoon of committee meetings, it will be time for the kick-off reception where attendees can enjoy a cold beverage while mingling with fellow members.
Top-Notch Industry Tour On Thursday, December 5, the AGA has the opportunity to tour three of the most well recognized beef cattle-related companies in the Billings area. This year’s industry tour is one of the convention events the AGA staff is most excited to provide attendees and is one of the reasons why Billings was chosen as the convention location. First, the AGA will tour ORIgen, near Huntley, Montana. ORIgen provides a unique system for bull owners to collect, market, and sell some of the best bovine genetics in the beef industry. ORIgen founders have built and designed a service system model that gives bull owners the ability to collect and market their genetics through a system that is designed for their best interests and returns, according to ORIgen. Next, convention attendees will travel to Joliet, Montana, to World West Sire Services. For over two decades, Scott Spickard, founder, has worked to collect thousands of beef bulls. Several of the bulls that the team at World West Sire Services has had the privilege of working with have piqued the interest of cattle breeders from around the world. The Billings area is highly saturated with outstanding beef genetics.
14 | NOVEMBER 2019
The last stop on the industry tour is Midland Bull Test, Columbus, Montana. Each year, Midland Bull Test performance tests approximately 1,100 purebred bulls from over 200 consignors representing more than 32 states. The top 80% of the bulls are sold in the “Final Sort” Sale in April. While at the last stop, the group will hear from a Leo McDonnell, owner of Midland Bull Test and eat lunch, compliments of Midland Bull Test.
Bull Pen Session Get a taste of Billings as this year’s Bull Pen Session goes to downtown Billings. This year’s event will take place the evening of Thursday, December 5, after the Cattlemen’s Profit Roundup educational symposium. Come experience the food and drink Montana has to offer while networking with other convention attendees and the industry-leading speakers of the Cattlemen’s Profit Roundup.
Annual Membership Meeting Members are encouraged to attend and exercise their right to vote as an AGA member at the AGA Annual Meeting taking place at the 49th Annual AGA National Convention. The Annual Membership meeting will be held on Friday, December 6, at 1:30 p.m., at the DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel Billings. During the AGA Annual Meeting, the election of five members to the AGA Board of Directors will take place. Read each candidates bio, starting on page 18 of this edition of Gelbvieh World. Members must be in good standing with the association in order to cast a vote.
Awards Banquet The culminating event of convention will take place on Friday evening as AGA stakeholders celebrate a successful year at the awards banquet, which will start at 6 p.m. A pre-banquet reception is taking place from 5-6 p.m. The awards banquet, sponsored by the American Gelbvieh Foundation, celebrates the accomplishments of the membership. The Commercial Producer of the Year, Breeder of the Year, and Hall of Fame recipients will be presented with their awards. Banquet attendees will also have a chance to win money by guessing the winning steer in the AGF’s Steer Challenge. The winners of the 2019 Scale and Rail Contest and Steer Challenge will also be announced.

49TH ANNUAL AGA NATIONAL CONVENTION
7 Candidates Vie for 5 Seats on the AGA Board of Directors
T
he American Gelbvieh Association (AGA) nominating committee recommends the following seven candidates to fill the five open positions on the AGA Board of Directors. Additional nominations may be accepted from the floor during the annual meeting. John Carrel, Montana (seeking re-election) Leland Clark, Kansas (seeking re-election) Mark Covington, Colorado Doug Hughes, Virginia (seeking re-election) Klint Sickler, North Dakota (seeking re-election) John Shearer, Kansas Tom Vehige, Missouri
The election for the AGA Board of Directors will take place during the AGA annual meeting at 1:30 p.m. MST on Friday, December 6, during the 49th Annual AGA National Convention in Billings, Montana. Any member who is unable to attend the AGA annual meeting may request an absentee ballot by phone, email, or fax for election of directors. To obtain an absentee ballot, a member must submit his or her application for an absentee ballot, to the American Gelbvieh Association office (1001 S. 70th Street, Suite 215 Lincoln, NE 68510) not more than 60 days (October 8, 2019) nor less than 10 business days (November 22, 2019) prior to the annual meeting. Any member that requests an absentee ballot must be in good standing with the Association at least sixty (60) days prior to the annual meeting. Ballots must be returned to the AGA office by 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday, November 27, 2019, to be counted at the annual meeting during AGA Board of Directors election to be held Friday, December 6, 2019.
John Carrel, Montana I would like to extend my gratitude to the nominating committee for presenting my name as a candidate for reelection to the American Gelbvieh Association Board of Directors. As owner of HC Cattle and a partner in Pine Coulee Bulls LLC and Rafter T Livestock LLP, I am concerned about Gelbvieh’s position in the overall cattle industry. I feel we must continue our aggressive approach to solidify Gelbvieh’s position in the current cattle complex. This, in turn, will greatly help our position as providers of both purebred and Balancer® seedstock. I am not as concerned as I was three years ago, as there has been a definite resurgence in the acceptability of Gelbvieh and Balancer cattle in the commercial sector. However, this is not a time to rest on our laurels. I feel the energetic, highly capable staff at the Association has put us in a position to propel the breed to the next level. As the new manager of Beartooth Ranch in the early 1990s I had limited exposure to the Gelbvieh breed. It did not take long to recognize the breed’s positive attributes and I have been sold on Gelbvieh ever since. We need to duplicate this same experience with more commercial and seedstock producers. I work with commercial producers daily and understand the pivotal role they play in our seedstock business. I will work with a “can do” attitude to restore Gelbvieh’s rightful place in the industry. At HC Cattle we are growing our Balancer herd and have taken on management of a purebred herd. Gelbvieh have helped keep us in the cattle business. I want to help keep Gelbvieh in the cattle business. I have served on numerous boards and with your support will continue to do my best to promote the Gelbvieh breed.
18 | NOVEMBER 2019
Leland Clark, Kansas It’s truly been an honor to have served the membership on the AGA board the past three years, and I would greatly appreciate your consideration for a second term to the board. I represent the fifth generation of my family to make their living exclusively from the land and livestock in north central Kansas. I was a member of livestock judging teams at both Colby Community College (where I was first introduced to Gelbvieh cattle) and Kansas State University where I graduated with a degree in animal science. For the past 38 years it has been the pleasure of my life to enjoy a partnership with my dad, Bill, at our operation, Post Rock Cattle Company. We purchased our first Gelbvieh cattle in 1981 and became AGA members in 1983. Today, we maintain over 400 head of Gelbvieh and Balancer cows and sell approximately 130 registered bulls annually. I have great passion and pride in what Gelbvieh and Balancer cattle offer the beef industry. I have served three terms on the Kansas Gelbvieh Association Board of Directors, twice as president. I have also served on many AGA committees, most recently as the chairman of the rules and bylaws committee. I have played an active part in keeping the Gelbvieh breed at the forefront of the Kansas seedstock industry. I served on the Kansas Beef Expo Board several years, twice as chairman. I believe that if the membership elects you, you must serve the membership by attending state functions, production sales, and generally being available to the membership for input as well as promptly returning calls. I assure you that I will continue to dedicate the time required. If re-elected, my focus would remain to do what is best for the Gelbvieh breed while increasing the breed’s position in the beef industry. I know firsthand the importance of a strong junior program from which my children have greatly benefitted. As a breed, we must also recognize that the average member has around 25 cows. They are the backbone of the Gelbvieh breed. We must have a strong and united membership moving forward. If you are fully invested and involved in production
agriculture, you are keenly aware of the economic climate we are in. Dollars will have to be spent wisely, all costs will have to be analyzed fully, and progress will be slower than what we hoped for. But I am steadfast in my belief that given the Gelbvieh and Balancers’ genetic strengths and with the continued commercial industry focus and positioning that has been put in place, together we can emerge stronger and with more market share when prosperity returns to agriculture. Thank you for your consideration and for the privilege of having served on the AGA board.
Mark Covington, Colorado I appreciate the honor of being asked to run for a position on the AGA Board of Directors. If elected, I will make every effort to make decisions that are best for the Gelbvieh breed. I do not have any agenda I am looking to push, other than to help continue the effort to promote Gelbvieh and Balancer cattle. I started raising Gelbvieh cattle when I was hired to manage the Broken Fork Ranch in La Jara, Colorado, in 1980. After nine years there, we had grown the herd to 250 head of registered Gelbvieh. With my wife, Nancy, we took many trips with local kids and Colorado kids to the American Gelbvieh Junior Association (AGJA) Classic shows. At that time of my Gelbvieh life I was very active in the AGA on various committees. We moved to Montrose in 1990 with our three kids, Justin, Ann, and Nicole. All of our kids showed in many of the AGJA Classic shows. Our kids and their families are still active members of the ranch. We have continued to raise purebred Gelbvieh and Balancer cattle, both for the show ring and the commercial cattleman. We have been managing partners in the Pot of Gold Bull Sale for 29 years. We currently sell around 130 bulls each year. The commercial cattleman has been our primary focus, but the sale members, our operation GELBVIEH WORLD |

I live in Max Meadows, Virginia, with my wonderful wife, Sue. We have two daughters, three grandsons, and a greatgrandson. I am retired from 35 years in the truck repair and large wrecker business. The company I owned and operated, Complete Truck Service Inc., employed around 18 employees. Now, I’m living the dream of farming and raising cattle 24/7.
Our country is a little different from some of the other areas of the U.S. because we have to raise cattle to survive and perform at elevations of up to 10,000 ft. Data is now being gathered by our association to help find the sires within our breed that have the genetic make up to be able to live and function at higher elevations. With the knowledge I have gained from the last 40 years of selecting cattle that work at higher elevations, I look forward to being able to help with that effort whether or not I am elected to the board. If elected to the board I will use my past and present experience to do my best to help make decisions that will move the Gelbvieh and Balancer breed in a positive direction.
We own and operate Little Windy Hill Farms and have been raising Gelbvieh cattle for 25 years in the Blue Ridge Mountains of southwest Virginia. I was raised with Hereford cattle and showed Hereford steers in 4-H. Sue and I had a herd of Charolais and dispersed them in the late ‘80s after

our daughter was done showing. Then we had a herd of black commercial cows and used Charolais bulls to make smokey calves. A friend of mine asked me to keep a big, dark red Gelbvieh bull for him one year. His calves, which were black or red, weaned just as heavy as the smokeys and brought more per pound. We switched to Gelbvieh bulls and as the story goes, we soon became a purebred Gelbvieh herd. We now run around 100 Gelbvieh, Balancer, and Angus cows along with 30 to 40 ET calves. We are having our 14th annual bull sale this November. I helped organize the Virginia Gelbvieh Association and held numerous offices there. I am a past president of the Breeders Choice Gelbvieh Bull Futurity, past
president of our local VA BCIA Bull Test Board of Directors at Virginia Tech, on our local Wythe County Apex Center Board of Directors, member of the CarrollGrayson Cattlemen’s Association, and past treasurer of the Max Meadows Ruritan Club. Currently, I’m co-chair of the AGA national sale committee, where we have been selling cattle there since 1999. I believe very strongly that Gelbvieh will be one of the breeds that will survive because they bring to the table traits that are lacking in a lot of other breeds and can produce what we can use in the future. It is an honor to be asked to run for a second term. I have learned a lot in the past three years on the board
Insure your cows and pasture land all in one place PASTURE, RANGELAND & FORAGE (PRF) DROUGHT PROTECTION Our protection per acre on your pasture or forage land is a no-brainer. It PAYS YOU an indemnity when the actual rainfall in any selected two-month period is less than 90% of the normal. If you receive 70% of normal rainfall, you receive an indemnity on 20% (the difference), which would still be a payment TO YOU from US.
LIVESTOCK MORTALITY (LM) ACCIDENT & SICKNESS INSURANCE This program covers accident, sickness and disease, usually for higher-value animals on an individual basis. It also covers bull mortality and certain infertility events caused by accident, sickness or disease during the coverage period. Herd coverage is available for events such as accidental shooting, drowning, artificial electricity, attack by wild animals, or collapse of building.
LIVESTOCK RISK PROTECTION (LRP) AGAINST PRICE DECLINATION The USDA’s Risk Management Agency offers Livestock Risk Protection (LRP) to protect ranchers against a decline in prices for fed and feeder cattle. This program works similar to a put option, but with several advantages.

49TH ANNUAL AGA NATIONAL CONVENTION and have a more in-depth understanding of how the association operates, along with its challenges. If re-elected, I will do my best to help move the Gelbvieh breed in a forward direction. We have a lot of changes taking place in the cattle business. To stay on top we have to stay one step ahead of our competition by being forward thinking. We presently have a great group of positive thinking cattlemen and women on the Board that are very passionate about the Gelbvieh breed and its ability to move forward into the future.
Klint Sickler, North Dakota For the past three years I have had the privilege to serve the membership of the AGA on our board of directors. I have greatly enjoyed this opportunity, and am grateful to have been asked to run for a second term. My wife, Maralee, and I operate Prairie Hills Gelbvieh in southwest North Dakota. Our ranch is truly a family endeavor, with my parents – Galen & Marcia Sickler – being active partners in all parts of the ranch. We have been blessed with four wonderful children – Kylee (8), Emerson (6), Trey (3), and Sage (3 months). Kylee attended her first Junior Classic in Iowa last summer, and she has definitely caught the bug! Our family has been involved in the Gelbvieh breed since 1985. Today we run 150 head of Gelbvieh cattle, and implant 30 embryos into a separate recip herd. What sets our program apart is that nearly every animal is a registered purebred Gelbvieh animal. We market our cattle through consignment sales throughout the U.S. and Canada, and sell 50 purebred bulls and select females through our annual sale in February. Over the past two years I have served on the AGA executive committee as secretary. This experience has really given perspective to the inner workings of the association, and to the potential that lies before this breed.
22 | NOVEMBER 2019
We are truly on the verge of great things. In the past year we have implemented BOLT-powered EPDs, relocated our office to Lincoln, rolled out the Balancer Edge program, and have hired a talented, energetic executive director. While I am grateful to have had the opportunity to be a part of these projects, I feel our best days are still in front of us. Now that we have our house in order, it is time to focus on things outside of our walls. There is still much work to be done in developing greater market demand for Gelbvieh-based seedstock, and Gelbvieh-influenced commercial cattle. As the AGA prepares to celebrate its 50th anniversary, the board members elected over the next five years will be tasked with making decisions that will determine our destiny for the next 50 years. This is a responsibility that I do not take lightly, and I look forward to meeting these challenges head on. I would greatly appreciate your support and consideration, whether voting in person or through absentee ballot. Please feel free to reach out to me through phone or email if there’s anything you’d like to discuss. I look forward to helping our breed take the next step!
John Shearer, Kansas I am humbled and honored to be a candidate for the American Gelbvieh Association Board of Directors. Since 1989, my family and I have been building on a foundation herd from 12 crossbred, Gelbviehinfluenced cows, to our present herd of about 300 cows at Circle S Ranch. Our annual production sale includes purebred Gelbvieh, Gelford bulls and heifers, and Gelbvieh-influenced cows and pairs. My wife, Carla, and I have two children, Kaycie and John, who were very active in the AGJA. Both have animal science degrees from Kansas State University. Kaycie and her husband, Clay Schilling, live near
Goodland, Kansas, and are primarily involved with his family’s cattle and farming operation. John has assumed most of the daily operations responsibilities of Circle S. We are also blessed with three healthy grandsons: Cogan, Whitten and, Wripley. My passion for most of my adult life has been to promote the Gelbvieh breed. I have traveled to many states to participate in state fairs and junior shows to promote not only Circle S genetics, but the Gelbvieh breed as well. If elected to the Board, I will strive to implement programs that will increase revenue and sound business practices for the Association. I think it is important to continue to promote Gelbvieh, Balancer, and Gelbvieh-influenced hybrid cattle, separately and simultaneously. I also want to reinvigorate the membership and positively engage with members. We have so much to add to the cattle industry. I would love to visit with anyone regarding my vision for the Gelbvieh Association and breed. The best way to contact me is by phone, 620-654-6507. I look forward to the opportunity of representing my fellow cattle producers on the AGA Board of Directors and would appreciate your vote.
Tom Vehige, Missouri I was fortunate enough to grow up in the beef industry. My family operated a pasture to plate program. My grandpa owned a meat locker, and we raised commercial cattle from calf to harvest. As I grew older, my work ethic and passion for the beef industry continued. When I thought about establishing my own herd, I knew I could never have as many cattle as I wanted, but I could have the best. Because my wife did not grow up around cattle,

49TH ANNUAL AGA NATIONAL CONVENTION I knew I needed a docile breed. Growth and maternal strengths were traits that I wanted for my seedstock business. Gelbvieh was a natural fit for what I wanted to achieve in my operation. Our program, T Bar S Cattle Company, is a true family business. Alongside my wife, Stacy, we have raised three children in the Gelbvieh breed: Justin, Kyle and Grace. All my children have served the AGJA as ambassadors and junior board members. Their time and service to our breed has continuously made my wife and I proud. I hope to leave a positive impact that recognizes even half of the blessings that I have received from being in this breed. As I run for a position on the AGA Board, I plan to keep the values of my family and breed in mind. As my kids are exiting college, they have expressed their love and interest in our family operation. There is growth and expansion on the horizon for us. It is our mission to genomically enhance and DNA verify our entire cowherd. We feel strongly about identifying where we have been in order to better determine where we are going. We will continue to do this within our herd to better serve our commercial customers through added value by utilizing tools to help mitigate risk. My family is prideful of our customer service and loyal customer base. As a small breeder, I have been blessed with many fortunes; yet, my family continuously works to stay grounded to better serve the needs of our customers. I am running for the American Gelbvieh Association’s Board of Directors so I can better serve our industry. My industry experience will offer a new perspective and inspire conversation and vision for the Board. I wish to serve so that I can give back to the breed and association that has given my family so much. Lastly, I would like to thank you for your time and consideration for my election. I would greatly appreciate your vote. It would be an honor to serve on the AGA Board of Directors. I ensure you that I will serve with the best of my ability. Thank you.

RBS G70 • AMGV 1459186 1/4 GV 3/4 AA
Sire: Epic Dam: RBS B27 MGS: Wardon
CED 12 BW 1.2 WW 87 YW 145
A great heifer with tremendous growth EPDs and a feedlot profit index that can’t be beat. You won’t find many heifers with this high of YW, CW, and marbling EPDs. She comes from a super cow family, and she is a granddaughter of the great DLW Wardon 24W bull (who is still breeding cows at 10 years old). RBS G10 • AMGV 1459212 11/16 GV 5/16 AR
Sire: Uncle Fred Dam: RBS Z40 MGS: Jackhammer
CED 7 BW 3.1 WW 67 YW 94
RBS G10 is a very flashy dark red heifer that is free moving with a strong topline. Her full sister sold to Schott Farms in Wisconsin through our sale last spring, and they are very happy with her. Her maternal family has been in our herd for six generations.
RBS G20 • AMGV 1459199 1/4 GV 3/4 AA
Sire: Future Force Dam: RBS B94 MGS: Wardon
CED 18 BW -2.0 WW 63 YW 99
Here is a super attractive, very well balanced heifer with super calving ease EPDs, great carcass traits, and an awesome FPI. Her mother has a 3 calf BW ratio of 94, WW ratio of 107, and YW ratio of 108. She is thick topped, deep bodied, and gets out and moves well. She will win some shows and then make a great cow for years to come. Her granddam, T21, is still producing at 12 years old and her great granddam, R19, settled AI again this year at 14. In summary, a beautiful heifer that will produce well and stay around for a long time.

49TH ANNUAL AGA NATIONAL CONVENTION
AGA Hall Of Fame Inductee For 2020
T
he American Gelbvieh Association (AGA) will again recognize a dedicated member that has been a pioneer in the Gelbvieh breed and has had an influence in the direction of the association. The 2020 AGA Hall of Fame inductee is Jim Thomas of O Lazy Y Ranch in Guthrie, Oklahoma. Jim will be presented with the award at the awards banquet on Friday, December 6, 2019, during the 49th Annual AGA National Convention in Billings, Montana. Jim was one of the first Gelbvieh breeders to display and exhibit Gelbvieh cattle at the National Western Stock Show (NWSS) in the ‘70s. Later he went on to show his cattle at nearly every state fair in the central U.S. Black Feature, purchased from Valhalla Ranch, won Jim champion ribbons at nearly every fair he was exhibited. Today, many quality cattle in the breed can be traced back to Black Feature and O Lazy Y breeding.

Not only did Jim raise quality cattle, but he also became a great promoter of the breed. He assisted many breeders in the early ‘80s by managing their production sales as co-owner of Golden Cattle Sales with Dr. Bill Able of Kansas State University. During a challenging era of breeds trying to find their place in a new U.S. cattle industry, Jim and Bill were instrumental in the education, recruitment, and trade of Gelbvieh genetics both commercially and in the seedstock sector. With their guidance, newcomers to the breed claimed many years of satisfaction being involved with a progressive breed of cattle. Jim has been very active within the association and remains so today, attending a Gelbvieh event whenever he can. He has held many committee leadership positions and has attended AGA conventions, American Gelbvieh Junior Association (AGJA) events, and the NWSS. He has even taken a leading role as a historian on the American Gelbvieh Foundation’s Gelbvieh History Documentary Book. His undying commitment to the Gelbvieh breed makes Jim Thomas a notable figure in the breed’s history. A lifetime of preserving, improving, and promoting the breed, all while encouraging fellow breeders to do the same, speaks to Jim’s infallible dedication and integrity. The endeavors and contributions of Jim Thomas have not only impacted the breed, but also the AGA and the AGJA. D

PRAISING MATERNAL MIGHT AGA Releases the Annual Dam of Merit and Dam of Distinction Roll Call
F
or nearly three decades the American Gelbvieh Association has recognized females in the AGA herdbook that exemplify the maternal traits that Gelbvieh and BalancerÂŽ cows are known for across the country. The Dam of Merit and Dam of Distinction program places a well-deserved spotlight on the AGA members who breed and own impressive females that showcase enhanced longevity and weaned progeny performance. The Dam of Merit honor recognizes cows that meet strict selection criteria including early puberty and conception, regular calving intervals and above average weaning weights on at least three calves. Of the 34,218 cows currently assessed so far in 2019, only 6.2% qualify for the Dam of Merit award.

GW REGISTRY TIPS ‘N TRICKS
Transferring Animals in the Name of Customer Service By Taylor Buckley
A
s we approach the fall sale season we all know how much work goes into putting on a sale on the front half. However, just as much time and energy should be spent on the back half making sure all loose ends get cleaned up. Taking care of customers is an important factor that can really set a program apart from the rest. A customer has spent the time and money to invest in your operation’s genetics, so give them the tools to make the most of their purchase.
Next, buyer information will be added (Figure 2). The buyer will need an AGA account number. If the buyer is an existing buyer and/or AGA member they should already have a number. First, check to if they have an existing number by clicking the “Search for Buyer” button to search a person by zip code. If you find the member and the address is incorrect please contact the AGA staff. If you cannot find the member at the bottom of that search screen there will be the button “Click to Create a New Profile”. This will allow you to create a profile for that person and give you a member number to use.
Transferring ownership of a registered animal into your customers’ names is an essential piece of customer service after the sale. To get papers mailed out to a customer, the seller will need to transfer the animal to a new owner through the American Figure 2 Gelbvieh Association’s (AGA) Online Registry Service. This can be done by logging into your AGA account and viewing all the animals the account has Once the buyer number is entered, select the date of listed. Once you find the animal needing transferred, off transfer and add in breeding information if applicable. to the right of that animal’s registration number is a gray There is a section in this queue where the program will ask box with the word “Transfer.” This is under the Options where you want to send the certificate paper; this is where section, between “Edit” and “Dispose.” you will most likely want to select “Buyer” for the new Once the “Transfer” button is selected the word “Queued” owner to receive the registration papers. Once information will appear (Figure 1). From here, drop down into the is entered, validate the request to complete the process and work queues that are off to the left and select the “Transfer transfer the animal. Animals” queue. You will see the animal queued up is selected All females transferred will need current herd in that page and ready to go. assessments, so make sure those are taken care of before animals are transferred or the Online Registry Service will not let you continue. Once the AGA Online Registry Service processes the request, the paper gets printed at the AGA office and sent out the next business day. Please allow up to five business days for the buyer to receive the registration paper. As always, feel free to call the AGA office at Figure 1 303-465-2333 if you have any questions. D

Maternal Traits AND Heavyweight Calves
fertile in comparison to all other breeds. My dad always says, “Fertility is the most economically important trait for economic stability in any operation.” A cow that raises a healthy calf every year and does so early in the calving season pays the bills. Another maternal strength is calving ease. I cannot stress how much we as Gelbvieh By Alexx Starr breeders appreciate the greater calving ease when we are calving out large groups of females. On those days the mothering ability of the Gelbvieh and Balancer® females is also clearly evident. Knowing Hay Quality Affects Supplementation Strategy Glenn Selk, Oklahoma State University Emeritus Extension Animal Scientist
C
attle producers in many areas of Oklahoma have been fortunate this summer to receive timely rains. Many big round bales of hay have been stored for winter feeding. Meeting the supplemental protein needs for the cows and replacement heifers consuming that forage must be done properly and economically. Protein is a vital nutrient for the ruminant because protein is necessary for the multiplication of, and the feed digestion by the microbes in the rumen. The microbial population in the rumen of cows is largely responsible for digesting cellulose in standing or harvested forages. Higher quality forages are more readily digested in the rumen and have higher rate of passage through the digestive tract of the cow than do lower quality roughages. Therefore the cow can consume more of the high quality forage on a daily basis and receives more total digestible nutrients (TDN) from each pound of feed consumed. If adequate protein is available to cows consuming lower quality roughages, then the rate of passage and the digestibility is improved compared to cows that are inadequately supplemented while consuming the same low quality forage. Producers may be surprised to know the large differences in protein supplement needed to meet the cow’s requirement depending on the quality of forage that makes up the majority of the diet. Below is a table of the pounds of 40% protein supplement needed daily for moderate-sized (1100 pound) beef cows in different stages of production and consuming differing quality of grass hays. (Table is adapted from Richards, Lalman, and McKinney; Cattleman’s Management Record Book.) Needed 40% protein supplement (lb/hd/day) to meet protein requirement of 1100 pound mature beef cow

Larger cows and cows that produce above average milk production will consume more forage and need even more supplement to match their requirements. The table above describes the protein-only needs of the beef cow. Energy deficiency may occur and result in some weight and body condition loss. Energy needs will be increased if cows are already in thin body condition and must be improved before calving next spring. Also, winter weather conditions can greatly increase energy needs. In many instances, the energy requirements can be met with lower protein supplements (for example 20% protein range supplements) fed at about twice the rate as noted in the table above. Forage quality differences are important, whether the supplement choice is high protein (40%) or lower protein (20% protein). Learn about testing hay for protein content by visiting with your OSU County Extension Office or downloading Oklahoma Cooperative Extension Fact Sheet PSS- 2589 Collecting Forage Samples for Analysis. GW OUT IN THE FIELD
ODE TO A COW By Unknown Author The Old Farmer’s Almanac 1936 When life seems one too many for you, Go and look at a cow. When the future’s black and the outlook blue, Go and look at a cow. For she does nothing but eat her food, And sleep in the meadows entirely nood, Refusing to fret or worry or brood Because she doesn’t know how. Whenever you’re feeling bothered and sore, Go and look at a cow. When everything else is a fearful bore, Go and look at a cow. Observe her gentle and placid air, Her nonchalance and savoir faire, Her absolute freedom from every care, Her imperturbable brow. So when you’re at the end of your wits, Go and look at a cow. Or when your nerves are frayed to bits, And wrinkles furrow your brow; She’ll merely moo in her gentle way, Switching her rudder as if to say: “Bother tomorrow! Let’s live today!” Take the advice of a cow.
By Tom Strahm
A
lthough I don’t believe that “the future’s black, and the outlook blue”, the “Ode To A Cow” reminds me that while very rewarding, production agriculture also can be very challenging. Extreme weather conditions, increased price volatility, and compressed profit margins are just a few of the obstacles that producers are faced with today. Many of these circumstances are beyond any of our control, and to say the least, it can be frustrating at times. Focusing on management areas where good decision making can have meaningful impact is crucial to improving the profit potential. In his book, “The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People” Stephen R. Covey writes “Our unique human endowments lift us above the animal world. The extent to which we exercise and develop these endowments empowers us to fulfill our uniquely human potential. Between stimulus and response is our greatest power - the freedom to choose.” Unlike the cow in the poem, who is just living for today, we can make meaningful, proactive choices today that improve our operations for tomorrow and for years to come. Some time ago, a cattle producer told me something that went like this, “I don’t want to work for my cows. I want my cows to work for me!” This mindset is influencing his decisions for genetic and phenotypic selection with the intent of improving his efficiency and ultimately improving his bottom line, which is something all cattle producers should strive to accomplish.

Many of the commercial cowcalf producers that I’ve had the opportunity to visit over the past couple of years are choosing Gelbvieh and Balancer® genetics because those cows “work for them.” The maternal strength of these hard-working females help to increase the overall productivity, and are positively impacting financial returns to the farm or ranch.
BREEDERS CORNER GW Maternal superiority summarizes many attributes of the Gelbvieh and Balancer cows that contribute to those cows working for these commercial cattlemen. Fertility, maternal ability, efficiency, and stayability are all very important traits in a mother cow. Many producers want these traits to come in a moderate sized, structurally sound and docile package that is consistent with the visual created in the ode above. While the cow appears placid and nonchalant, she just as well be working hard for her owner!
U
nlike the cow in the poem, who is just living for today, we can make meaningful, proactive choices today that improve our operations for tomorrow and for years to come.
Genetics that work for you should reduce your inputs, hopefully reduce your stress, and increase your profit potential. As seedstock suppliers, the product that you’re selling needs to work for your customers. Keep striving to produce genetics that will work better for your commercial customers, help them return a profit to their operation. Ultimately, you and your customers have a common goal of producing a safe, nutritional and wholesome product that culminates in the best eating experience for consumers around the world! D

GW FIELD DAY NEWS
North Dakota Gelbvieh Association Field Day Report by Al Gustin
A
warm and beautiful fall day draws a crowd for the annual North Dakota Gelbvieh Association Field Day. Gustin’s Diamond D Gelbvieh of Mandan, North Dakota, hosted the event on September 14. Roughly 50 ranchers from North Dakota, Minnesota, and Canada attended pasture tours and meetings.
including Balancer® Edge source and age verification program, Feeder Finder, new features of Gelbvieh.org’s Exchange page, and an update on American Gelbvieh Junior Association activities, etc. There were also roughly 20 kids present for the tours and the North Dakota Junior Gelbvieh Association-sponsored games and fun! D
Pasture tours featured roughly 250 cow-calf pairs and more than 100 registered bred heifers. The day concluded with a general membership meeting, discussing the 2020 Golden Rule Sale and AGA Hall of Fame nominations. AGA Breed Growth Specialist Will Fiske shared details about the new office location and details on the different programs available through the association

DIG YOUR WELL BEFORE YOU’RE THIRSTY One of the mass appeal business authors from the 1980’s era was a writer called Harvey McKay. McKay had an envelope company and wrote a series of books, one of which was called “Dig Your Well Before You’re Thirsty”. The premise of the book was building relationships. In concentrating on the building relationships, one can take the time to build the three building blocks in the relationship process. Your prospects need to “Know, Like and then Trust” you. Relating these concepts to the Gelbvieh and Balancer
business here’s your big question. Have you done the work to ‘Dig Your Well Before You’re Thirsty”? If you’re in the business of selling cattle, semen or genetics it’s a serious question. Have you spent time helping your prospects in your market get to know who you are? Take the time to shoot the uncomfortable videos (none of us really enjoy making much less watching) to post on Social Media introducing who you are, who your family is, what your operation is about.
your prospects have an opportunity to trust you. Once trust is in place the sale of your livestock is fairly straight-forward and simple. It takes time and it’s not always easy but it is worth it? If you want to have more customers, sell more cattle and have more money. Absolutely!! If you have cattle or genetics to sell we’d love to have a conversation with you at GelbviehAuction.com. Email us at bidontheblockcom@ gmail.com or call us at 615.412.9543.
Once you’ve introduced what you’re about, have you repeated the process to give your prospects and opportunity to like you. We all like doing business with people like. From a dentist to the car salesman. We are more apt to buy goods and services when we like who we are buying from.
