At Cranview Gelbvieh, we believe in “Balanced Genetics”. We define this concept in our breeding program as a balanced combination of traits. These traits include attractive phenotypes, proven pedigrees, growth and performance, and the ability to grade on the rail. Check out the data above on our most recent load of finished cattle. Furthermore, we take our selection criteria one step further than most. We performance test our bulls and replacement females and incorporate the latest DNA technology. This attention to detail continues to propel our program forward and helps make our customers money. In the end, our ultimate goal is to produce Gelbvieh and Balancer™ genetics that fulfill the needs of the commercial cattlemen, the demands of the beef industry and the satisfaction of the consumer! PRESIDENT’S VIEW
Participate and Get Involved “Work on the fundamentals and develop trust in your team.” By Rob Arnold I RECENTLY ATTENDED a conference with Joe Montana as the guest speaker. In his four Super Bowls, Montana led his team to victory in each game and he is the only player ever to win three Super Bowl MVP awards. His message to the group was, “Work on the fundamentals and develop trust in your team.” You might ask what does this have to do with the American Gelbvieh Association. We are approaching one of the most important times of the year for the AGA, the committee meetings. One of the basic fundamentals of the AGA is that it is driven from the ground up. That means it’s up to us to participate and provide input if we are going to improve our position in the cattle industry and win the choice of commercial cattlemen. Members provide the foundation in which an organization is built. Effective organizations take their members and build a structure promoting participation. An effective structure is supported by members trusting in each other. A lot like successful sports teams. In mid-November through mid-December, the AGA will hold its annual committee meetings via webmeeting, just like we did last season. This format allows: •
A greater opportunity for more members to participate;
•
A greater opportunity to focus on special topics and member education during the Annual Convention in January;
•
A greater opportunity for members to network and socialize with fellow breeders during the AGA Convention;
•
An opportunity for those that can’t participate and provide input at the Annual Convention.
6 | NOVEMBER 2014
Involvement is the basic fundamental practice for a successful team that each member can and should provide. There are a number of ways to be involved: 1. Being an active state and national committee member; 2. Being an active state and national board member; 3. Exhibiting cattle at state and national shows; 4. Consigning cattle to local and national sales events; 5. Participating in local and national stockman association events.
Effective organizations take their members and build a structure promoting participation. An effective structure is supported by members trusting in each other.
Gelbvieh cattle have a lot to offer the cattle industry. I believe each one of us has input and talents to offer the Gelbvieh Association. I encourage everyone to participate in the upcoming committee meetings. FFF

WITH MATERNAL POWER
These females were all purchased in a past Cowman’s Kind production sale. Every sound six year old cow sells each year. This annual dispersion of our six year age group allows buyers a chance at our best proven genetics with most of their productive life still ahead of them.
DCSF POST ROCK GWEN 33P1
This purebred donor for J Bar M and Hilltop Farms was purchased in the 2012 Post Rock sale. She’s got outstanding EPDs across the board and has the same dam as the outstanding homozygous black, homozygous polled Captain son that topped our 2013 sale, selling to Diamond D Gelbvieh.
DCSF 87R6 A donor for Post Rock that produced a Denver Division Reserve Champion by Predestined. Post Rock Gwen 33P1 is a homozygous polled, black daughter by Free Agent out of Bouncer’s dam, and now she is a donor for Mathews Farm in Tennessee.
DCSF POST ROCK ARATA 80R2
This outstanding Top Brass daughter was purchased by Circle S in Kansas in our 2011 sale. She produced an sensational Decade daughter for Circle S and they speak highly of this cow.
DCSF POST ROCK BLACKBIRD 6T8 80R2 sold in the 2012 Cowman’s Kind Sale. She was a donor for Post Rock and now a donor for Martin Gelbvieh in North Dakota. A son is owned by Holste’s Triple H in Iowa, and a daughter by Coneally Consensus 7729 is a truly outstanding four year old in our program. 80R2’s dam is also a Cowman’s Kind sale alumni selling to Warner Beef Genetics and Trans Pacific Gelbvieh.
THOUGHT FOR THE MONTH...
Never believe rumors until the government denies them. POST ROCK CATTLE COMPANY Scott Bradoc of North Dakota purchased this own daughter of CTR Goodnight 4743P out of Bravo’s grandam. An outstanding daughter sells in the 2015 Post Rock Sale.

EXECUTIVE’S VIEW
Read the Signs, Follow the Map The characteristics associated with successful cattle producers often coincide with genetic discipline that directly correlates to market and industry demand. By Myron Edelman ARE YOU “READING the signs” indicative of the opportunity for profit available in the current market place, especially for ranchers and feeders that produce and feed genetically superior cattle? Have you taken the steps that position your cattle to be competitive in these astounding feeder and fed cattle markets? More importantly, have you followed a genetic map with information that may lead you to building functional replacement females?
Figure 1. Historical Beef Cow Inventory
Utilize the information available to establish a cow herd capable of withstanding the strenuous requirements of modern mother cows to be productive and profitable
over their entire lifespan. While cows must remain fertile, sound and re-breed on time each year, we also ask that they annually produce those profitable cattle that feed yards and packers compete for and/or daughters with the ability to advance the herd toward more efficient and ultimately profitable production. Attend any industry related function and you can engage in a discussion about the current unprecedented markets for calves, feeders and market ready cattle that we have recently witnessed. Perhaps even more interesting than the high levels of the cattle markets is the potential for profit at each stage of the supply chain. Cattle that garner the highest dollar values at each market stage begin with a disciplined genetic selection process.
Figure 2. 2014 Beef Cow Slaughter 8 | NOVEMBER 2014
U.S. cow herd inventory at historical lows (see Figure 1. Historical Beef Cow Inventory) describes the circumstances that drive the scramble for available cattle resources. The very structure of market demand suggests that

producers with available space for cows will look to expand cow herds to capitalize on the strongest markets the industry has ever seen. Is there data available that indicates the U.S. will experience cow herd expansion? Two data points made available by CattleFax to consider are: a measure of current cow inventory sold for slaughter, and how many heifers are placed on feed intended for slaughter. Figure 2 (2014 Beef Cow Slaughter) indicates that over 300,000 fewer beef cows have been slaughtered as of August 2014, which is a reduction of more than 16 percent from the previous year. Figure 3 (Heifers Percent of Slaughter) shows heifers as a percentage of USDA slaughter has also been reduced. Yearend predictions for 2014 show a reduction of 1.5 percent fewer heifers being slaughtered than the previous year.
Figure 3. Heifers as a Percent of Slaughter
Ranchers and farmers should certainly ask the question: is a large percentage of my heifer calf crop replacement quality? Have you applied selection pressure with tools available through the American Gelbvieh Association (AGA) to assist in building females? Special focus on data points such as heifer pregnancy, 30-month pregnancy, stayability, and calving ease may help build your reputation for delivering females with strong maternal capability. The most recent tool in the selection arsenal provided by the AGA is the $Cow index. This

maternally focused index considers a combination data set of traits with economic relevance and maternal influence. The Meat Animal Research Center (MARC) data suggest that Gelbvieh influence may assist ranchers in controlling mature cow weights in efforts to maintain efficiency at the ranch level. What about growth? Do Gelbvieh and Balancer® cattle also grow? Yes, for more than a decade the growth trend in the Gelbvieh breed has been one of steady increase. The ability to maintain or add growth to cattle with maternal efficiency at the ranch level makes Gelbvieh an attractive package for producers considering options for building cow numbers. Gelbvieh and Balancer stakeholders are in a fortuitous position to supply the industry with replacement females that have “maternal influence.” Have you read the signs that describe the opportunities in the current market place for superior and reliable genetics? Are you following a genetic map on your own farm or ranch that can place you in a competitive position? The opportunity is available to offer the beef business genetic solutions to fulfill the needs of ranchers committed to building productive and profitable cow herds while supplying cattle that meet beef market demands. Gelbvieh stakeholders need only to “Read the Signs” and “Follow the Map.” FFF

AGA Office Closed
Take a few moments to make sure a few things are in order now to help insure recording of your 2015 calves goes smoothly.
The American Gelbvieh Association office will be closed Thursday, November 27 and Friday, November 28, 2014 for Thanksgiving. Regular office hours will resume Monday, December 1.
Submit DNA on any new bulls collected and used for AI for the 2014 breeding season. All AI sires must have a Genomic Option #1: Gelbvieh Genomic ProfileHigh Density test, be parent verified, and have genetic conditions testing completed before an AI permit can be issued. Make sure all donor dams are qualified. Donor dams must have a Genomic Option #1: Gelbvieh Genomic Profile-High Density test and genetic conditions testing complete prior to ET calves being recorded. Did you borrow or lend any bulls to AGA members for use as natural service sires in the 2014 breeding season? The owner of the lent bull needs to complete a natural breeding agreement via the AGA registry service to allow the non-owner to record calves out of this sire.

Make the Switch – Blood Samples Instead of Tail Hair for DNA Testing GeneSeek®, the American Gelbvieh Association’s DNA service provider, is constantly trying to automate larger portions of DNA testing in order to make the process more efficient. Part of this transition includes customers taking blood samples instead of tail hair samples for testing. Why blood? Blood samples can be processed by a machine as opposed to lab technicians, which lessens the processing time of that sample. Customers can benefit from submitting blood samples through potentially quicker turn-around times for results. Follicles on hair samples (the part that contains the DNA) are sometimes hard to find, and a test will fail if there isn’t enough DNA to test. Blood samples are an easier and more consistent way for the lab to pull DNA for testing, with hopefully fewer failed samples. It pays to switch. GeneSeek currently charges $1 per card for hair samples. Blood cards, on the other hand, are not charged extra.
Gelbvieh Departures Charles “Edward” Randall, 70, husband of Marcelyn Gambrell Randall, of Seneca, S.C., passed away Wednesday, September 3, 2014 at Oconee Medical Center. A native of Oconee County, Mr. Randall was the son of Lorene Callaham Randall and the late Charles Ray Randall. He attended Clemson University and was past president of the South Carolina Gelbvieh Association. He was a self-employed car dealer and was a member of Seneca Baptist Church. He loved his family, Clemson football, and his cows. He will be missed by many.

BITS ‘N PIECES Gelbvieh Departures On September 9, 2014, Johnny Dewayne Kittle, a resident of Geraldine, passed away at the age of 55. While his time in this world was short for those he leaves behind, Johnny’s impact on his family, his friends, and the community will never be forgotten. Johnny Kittle lived his life every day with passion. Johnny Kittle In his earlier years, Johnny could be found most any night in the woods, coon hunting. He served as president of the Sand Mountain Coon Hunters Association. His best times coon hunting were spent alongside his favorite Treeing Walker hound, Night Champion Kittle’s Alabama Pride. Johnny was also an avid turkey hunter and deer hunter. He was co-founder of the Iron Gate Hunting Club and served as president. In his lifetime, Johnny took well over 50 gobblers. He harvested a 12 point and a 10 point buck, and holds club records at the Iron Gate Hunting Club. As a businessman, Johnny came from humble beginnings. To make ends meet as a young father and husband, he trapped muskrats and sold the furs for $5 each. After attending Coosa Valley Technical College to learn the trade of welding, Johnny turned Kittle Welding, a one man operation in a shop by his home, into Kittle Fabrication, LLC, a steel construction business that provided structural steel and handrails on projects across the Southeast, from the Guntersville State Park to Disney World and most everywhere in between. Johnny’s true calling in business was farming. In 1972, at the age of fourteen, he obtained a government agricultural loan to purchase cattle. Johnny built that cattle operation over the next 42 years to approximately 150 head of cattle. In recent years, he formed Kittle Gelbvieh Farms, which focused on registered Gelbvieh cattle. Johnny took great pride in and great care of his cattle, always tending to their needs even before his own.
Did You Know? Roughly 5 percent, or 2,024 cows, in the AGA Herdbook qualify for the Dam of Merit award. Only 420 females, or 1 percent, of the active cows in the AGA Herdbook meet the strict qualifications to be named a Dam of Distinction. A total of 451 AGA members are the owner or breeder of at least one Dam of Merit or Dam of Distinction. Projected beef cow inventory for 2015 shows a one percent growth. Crossbreeding adds about 30 percent to the overall lifetime productivity of a crossbred cow compared to a straightbred cow. There were 31,955 animals registered with the American Gelbvieh Association for the 2013-2014 fiscal year.

Impacting Profit with Gelbvieh and Balancer® Females Gelbvieh and Balancer® cattle offer maternal superiority through increased longevity, added fertility, and more pounds of calf weaned per cow exposed. In addition, Gelbvieh and Balancer females offer a small mature cow size, more maternal milk, and reach puberty at an earlier age.

U.S. MEAT ANIMAL Research Center data shows Gelbvieh females have the smallest mature cow size of the four major Continental breeds. The Gelbvieh breed was the only breed in the study to reduce mature cow size- at an average of 1,382 pounds Gelbvieh-sired females had the lowest five-year-old cow weight (see Moderate Mature Cow Weight chart). This reduced mature cow-size allows for puberty to be reached at an earlier age, which leads to calving earlier in the season and producing a calf at a younger age. These females are able to wean heavier calves while still maintaining low birth weights and a tight calving interval year after year. Gelbvieh and Balancer females also excel in stayability, which is the probability a bull’s daughters will remain in the cow herd until at least six years of age. With the high costs associated with the development or purchase of replacement females, sustained reproduction is essential in a herd. “Open cows are costly. The younger they exit the herd for not getting pregnant the more they cost a

rancher. It is expensive to replace opens. Our Gelbvieh and Balancer cows get bred and continue getting bred compared to our other breeds. That helps us make money,” says Scott Starr of Stapleton, Neb. Starr and his family own and operate Cedar Top Ranch, a large scale seedstock and commercial cow-calf operation located in the Nebraska Sandhills.

With stayability and cow productivity being important factors in cow-calf profitability, adding Gelbvieh and Balancer maternal influence through a crossbreeding program is a great option for commercial producers. Using Gelbvieh and Balancer genetics in a crossbreeding program can add as much as $1,000 profit over the lifetime of a crossbred cow (see Advantage of Crossbred verses Straightbred chart). “At Spade Ranch, we use Balancer females because of their tremendous stayability and maternal traits, allowing those females to thrive on limited resources. We believe in the advantages and necessity of crossbreeding to capitalize on maternal heterosis,” comments Wesley Welch, president and CEO of Spade Ranch in Lubbock, Texas. for a successful operation. The American Gelbvieh Association (AGA) started the Dam of Merit and Dam of Distinction program to emphasize and promote these female characteristics in the Gelbvieh breed to help maintain producer profitability and industry efficiency. “Maternal traits are where the Gelbvieh breed really excels. Encouraging our members to continue putting selection pressure on these traits will put the breed in an even better position for impacting the beef industry,” says Susan Willmon, American Gelbvieh Association’s director of breed improvement. The Dam of Merit and Dam of Distinction awards are based on data submitted by members to the

Maintained a regular calving interval with average calving interval must not exceed the value calculated using the following formula: [(number of calving intervals x 365 days) + 30 days] divided by number of calving intervals; or the female had her third calf before her fourth birthday and maintained a 365-day calving interval thereafter.
Several members of the AGA utilize the Dam of Merit and Dam of Distinction program to select the most elite females in their herd. “The American Gelbvieh Association’s Dam of Merit and Dam of Distinction program is a great tool for identifying females because it accounts for reproduction, fertility, productivity and longevity,” says Dick Helms of Flying H Genetics, Arapahoe, Neb. “Flying H Genetics has always gathered and submitted the data to qualify their cows for this program and we follow these cow families closely. If a bull’s dam is a Dam of Merit or Dam of Distinction, we consider this a strong positive when evaluating him for herd bull potential.” Producers who utilize this program see the value in using it to select females that fit their breeding program criteria. “Since day one, the Judd Ranch program has focused on excellence in performance coupled with structural soundness, eye appeal and superb teat and udder structure, and the herd has been culled stringently for fertility,” says Judd Ranch consultant, Roger Gatz with Cattlemen’s Connection.
Judd Ranch and Flying H Genetics are two of many AGA members who continually have females who receive Dam of Merit and Dam Distinction honors. Putting emphasis on these maternal traits not only benefits operations utilizing the Dam of
Merit and Dam of Distinction program, but it is also important for the beef industry as a whole. A cow’s ability to wean a strong, healthy calf year after year is essential to efficient beef production. FFF

Gelbvieh Breeders Recognized for Superior Females Annual Dam of Merit and Dam of Distinction Honor Roll Each fall the American Gelbvieh Association (AGA) honors females in the herdbook that display maternal superiority through the Dam of Merit and Dam of Distinction program. The AGA praises those members who continually place emphasis on the maternal traits of Gelbvieh and BalancerÂŽ in their herd and produce these outstanding females.
honor females based on data that is submitted to the AGA office. The females must meet the following criteria to qualify for this recognition: early puberty and conception, regular calving intervals, and aboveaverage weaning weights on their calves. Dams of Merit must have produced at least three calves in addition to meeting these criteria. Dams of Distinction must have produced eight calves or more and exhibit superior, long-term productivity.
The Dam of Merit and Dam of Distinction recognition program was started in 1991 to honor superior females within the breed. Both of these

VIEW OF THE NUMBERS
DNA Testing Strategies for Bull Sale Season still somewhat difficult to quantify the added value that may be gained by having GE EPDs. In a recent presentation as part of the National Beef Cattle Education Consortium Brown Bagger series, Jack Ward of the American Hereford Association stated that on average a bull sold with GE EPDs would receive approximately a $2,100 premium compared to those sold without GE EPDs.
With fall weaning now complete for most AGA members, thoughts are turning to spring bull sales. Those thoughts should include a strategy for DNA testing. By Susan Willmon THE RECENT IMPLEMENTATION of the new AGA Registry Service has brought many improved tools for use by AGA members. This new system greatly improves AGA’s ability in terms of DNA testing and reporting. As well, the Registry Service has facilitated the Association’s implementation of genomic-enhanced EPDs (GE EPDs). GE EPDs are now available on all animals that have completed the Gelbvieh Genomic Profile DNA testing. Breeders may want to consider adding genomic testing for GE EPDs for their sale animals. Since 2011 when the first GE EPDs were made available by the American Angus Association, most major beef breeds have released GE EPDs or are in the process of developing GE EPDs. Increasingly through the spring 2014 sale season, bulls were marketed as having GE EPDs and this fall several state bull tests are recommending their bulls have GE EPDs. While we understand the benefits of GE EPDs, it is
If you are considering having GE EPDs for your sale bulls now is the time to start this process. For those members that used to include the Igenity® Profile at a cost of $50 on their sale bulls, substituting the Genomics Option 2 – Gelbvieh Genomic Profiler-Low Density (GGP-LD) test at $45, compares favorably. In addition the GGP-LD includes parentage markers, and docility and tenderness scores. Additional tests for coat color and horned/polled status can be added onto the GGP-LD for a reduced cost than the stand alone tests. More information on all of AGA’s DNA testing options can be found at Gelbvieh.org on the DNA Testing page under the Education Center tab. DNA sample cards can be ordered through the AGA office and orders should be placed through the online registry service. If you have questions, please call the AGA office.
How do I obtain GE-EPDs?
Genomic Option #2: GGP-LD?
Animals tested for either Genomic Option #1: Gelbvieh Genomic Profiler-High Density (GGP-HD) or Genomic Option #2: Gelbvieh Genomic Profile-Low Density (GGP-LD) will obtain GE-EPDs. GE-EPDs are typically displayed the week following the completion of the DNA testing at GeneSeek®.
The answer to which genomic option testing you should do is dependent on the purpose of the animal and your own preferences. First off, both options include parentage markers, parentage verification if the sire and dam registration numbers are supplied, and tenderness and docility scores. In addition, all animals tested under either Option #1 or Option #2 will receive genomicenhanced EPDs.
Should I test for the Genomic Option #1: GGP-HD or 26 | NOVEMBER 2014
Animals that are going to become AI sires or donor dams need Genomics Option 1: GGP-HD. At present, the GGP-HD test features almost 80,000 SNPs for increased genomic selection power. Additionally, animals tested with the GGP-HD are included in the training population when periodic re-calculation of GE EPDs occurs allowing that animal’s progeny to be predicted with better accuracy. Breeders should consider testing their top-end sale bulls, those who could become AI sires, with the GGP-HD test. The Genomics Option 2: GGP-LD features more than 10,000 SNPs which are vital for prediction of genetic merit. The GGP-LD is a more cost efficient option for those wanting GE EPDs, parentage markers, and tenderness and docility scores. AGA members should strongly consider testing the remaining portion of their sale offering with Genomics Option #2. During the August 2014 Board of Directors meeting, the Board passed the following new rule: all sires of pasture exposed calves born on or after January 1, 2016 will be required to have a minimum of Genomic Option # 2 low density (GGP-LD) test on file prior to registration of 2016 born calves.
The reasoning behind the passage of this rule was that if the Gelbvieh breed and AGA members want to stay at the forefront of genetic progress, having GE EPDs with increased accuracies on these young sires will allow the selection for young sires more likely to achieve a producer’s genetic progress goals. Testing the remaining portion of your bull sale offering with the GGP-LD test will allow those bulls to be used in the 2015 breeding season for 2016 calves to satisfy this new rule without any additional DNA testing on the part of the buyer. Additionally these bulls can also be sire verified or parent verified if parentage markers on file.
When should I submit my DNA samples for testing? Ideally samples should be submitted six to eight weeks prior to your sale catalog deadline. This will provide approximately three weeks for the testing process as well as additional time for data to be updated and any parentage discrepancies to be resolved or retesting to be accomplished. use the white Login and Register links. This login is for the AGA’s Exchange Listing Service and can be used to post bulls, females and feeder cattle for sale. The user name that you will use to log in is your AGA member number. Your password is the same password you had with the previous member online registry system. If you are a new user to the online Registry Service, contact the AGA office to request an online agreement form. Send the completed form back to the AGA office, and login and password information will be sent to you. To ensure the AGA has correct information for your membership on file, one of the first things you should do once logged into the Registry Service is update contact information and member preferences. Please be sure all names, addresses and phone numbers associated with your membership are up-to-date.
Navigating the Registry Service The work menu on the left side of the screen allows members to easily navigate through the Registry Service. Next to each item on the work menu there is either a red or green box indicating whether there are additional menu items below it. If there is a green box next to the menu item, this means there are no additional items below it. A menu item that has a red box next to it means there are additional menu items below it.
Search Tools When utilizing the search tools, there are few things to remember. First, be sure you have selected the appropriate Search Field radio button for each desired search option in order to complete the search. When searching for an animal by name, remember that the prefix is not considered part of the animal’s name. For example Entering “SLC Freedom 178F” will yield zero results, but just entering “Freedom 178F”, will bring up 6 animals matching that criteria. To find all the animals born to a particular ranch
use the prefix plus the % sign (TNDR%). To find all the animals born during one calendar year to a particluar ranch, use the prefix, % sign, year code, and % sign (TNDR%A%).
animals at a time into the birth, weaning or yearling queues. This will help to prevent getting overwhelmed when there are multiple errors on the screen or if the data is somehow lost before clicking validate.
Entering Birth, Weaning, and Yearling Data
Transferring Animals
When recording calves and entering birth data, setting up a quick sire list first can make the process much quicker. This list can be found under the herd tab on the general profile information screen. Also remember when recording calves that your herd prefix is automatically part of the name so no need to enter it into the name field. If no name is entered for the animal, the system will use the tattoo.
When transferring animals to a new owner, designate what percentage of the animal is being transferred. If 100 percent of the animal is being transferred be sure to put 100 in the box under “% being transferred”. Do not enter the percent sign into this box, only the number.
Clicking validate while in a work queue ensures that the information will be saved. If you only have part of the animal’s information you may click validate and it will remain in the work queue until it is committed to the registry. You must click validate to check for any errors before committing to the registry.
When selecting a buyer to transfer an animal to, double check the name of the member you are transferring to. If possible, transfer animals to members, designated type M, and non-members, designated type N, before transferring to Partnerships and Inquiries. If you have questions or need help with the Registry Service, contact the AGA office at 303-465-2333 or email registration@gelbvieh.org. FFF

VIEW FROM THE FIELD GAIN Promotes Gelbvieh at Husker Harvest Days Report and Photos by Dick Helms FOR MORE THAN ten years the Gelbvieh Association in Nebraska (GAIN) has exhibited bulls, calves and pairs at Husker Harvest Days (HHD) in central Nebraska. This year they added educational speakers and free walking tacos to the mix to attract more cattlemen to their location. HHD is held in early September, this year’s dates were September 9-11, and is the world’s largest irrigated working farm show. To highlight their display, GAIN added a tent, made walking tacos and offered free bottles of water and scheduled three tremendous speakers for the three day event. Starting off the first day, Dan Dorn, procurement specialist for Decatur County Feed Yard (DCF), was the featured speaker at 11:00 a.m. and again at 2:00 p.m. He presented breeder/owner data where genetic selection of bulls had added hundreds of dollars of profits to each calf. These profits where accumulative and included lowered feed costs, better gains, and higher valued carcasses. Day 2 was rained out for only the second time in more than 30 years. On the third day, Dr. Matt Spangler, beef genetic specialist at the University of Nebraska, Lincoln, explained how genomic-enhanced EPDs can help ranchers improve their bull buying success. By using DNA analysis, the accuracy of the EPD predictions is increased to the same degree as if there were 5-10 progeny records.
Dan Dorn spoke about the profit drivers in the feed yard at the GAIN tent during Husker Harvest Days.
The crowds were smaller this year due to the weather but it is estimated that over 100 people participated in the programs and
over 500 people viewed the live cattle displays and visited with the Gelbvieh breeders. FFF

Impacting the Beef Business with Maternal Influence IN LESS THAN two months, members of the American Gelbvieh Association will gather once again during the National Western Stock Show for its annual convention. The 44th AGA Annual Convention will be held January 9-10, 2015 in Denver, Colo. The theme for the 2015 Annual Convention is Impacting the Beef Business with Maternal Influence. Emphasizing traits the Gelbvieh breed excels in is essential for the breed to remain relevant and experience growth within the beef industry for years to come. Gelbvieh and Balancer® cattle offer maternal superiority through increased longevity, added fertility, and more pounds of calf weaned per cow exposed. To further promote these maternal traits the AGA has made great strides this year to introduce new EPDs and an economic index to help members and commercial producers select the best females the breed has to offer. This year’s convention will center on the maternal
influence with Gelbvieh and Balancer through two educational panels held on Friday afternoon. Each panel will feature industry experts to discuss maternal traits from both a scientific focus and from an industry perspective. After the panelists’ presentations, members will be able to participate in a question and answer session to dive more deeply into the topics. The AGA committee meetings will again be held via free web-meetings that will allow all members to be involved. Meetings will be spread out during the months of November and December, see the committee meetings schedule on following page for more details. Make plans now to participate in both the committee meetings and the Annual Convention. Please visit the 2015 AGA Convention web page at www.GELBVIEH.org for the most current information regarding committee meetings, the annual convention, and NWSS activities.
Nominate Outstanding Commercial, Seedstock Producers THE AMERICAN GELBVIEH Assocciation will recognize one Outstanding Commercial Producer and one Outstanding Seedstock Producer annually during the Gelbvieh activities at the National Western Stock Show. The recipients of the AGA awards will then be considered 32 | NOVEMBER 2014
for the Association’s nominations for the BIF awards that year. State associations are asked to nominate one commercial producer and one seedstock producer they feel is deserving of this recognition. The applications are available online as editable PDF documents and are due to the AGA office by December 1.
Hotel Reservations & Convention Registration HOTEL RESERVATIONS AND convention registration can be completed in one quick, easy, online form available on the convention page at Gelbvieh.org. Registration to the American Gelbvieh Association Annual Convention is free of charge. To assist AGA staff in planning, please include first and last names of all convention attendees. All convention attendees should pick up name tags and convention booklets at the AGA Convention registration desk. The headquarters hotel for the 2015 AGA Annual Convention, where all convention activities will take place, is: DoubleTree by Hilton Denver-Stapleton
North, 4040 Quebec St., Denver, CO 80216. The room rate is $85, plus 14.75% tax, includes two coupons per room for full breakfast buffet. Reservations must be made by December 12, 2014. Individual reservations must be cancelled within 72 hours prior to arrival to avoid the penalty of one night's room and tax. Confirmation numbers will be sent via email, provided an email address is given on the online reservation form. For questions or assistance in completing the online form, please contact Dianne Coffman, AGA director of administration at 303-4652333 or diannec@gelbvieh.org.
All Committee Meetings Held Via Free Web-Meeting THE AMERICAN GELBVIEH Association committees play a vital role in the development and implementation of AGA programs, services and policies. An active committee process is one of the core grass roots values of the AGA. All AGA committee meetings will be held in mid-November through mid-December via webmeeting prior to the annual convention. There will be no committee meetings at convention. Instead, all members are invited and encouraged to participate in the committee web-meetings from the comfort of their own home. To participate, members only need an Internet connection. Web-meetings can be accessed via a URL link from a home computer, tablet or mobile device. This is a free service to members and no special software is required. A tele-conference option is also available. Through the web-meetings, members will be able to listen and watch presentations, participate in discussions, make motions and vote. The core functions and value of the committees – making recommendations to the Board of Directors – will not change. The only change is the venue. More details and instructions on how to access the web-meetings will be provided to members via the Enewsletter as well as on the AGA website. Please take note of the committee meeting dates and times.

Notice of 2015 American Gelbvieh Association Annual Meeting PURSUANT TO ARTICLE VII, Paragraph A (2), of the bylaws of the American Gelbvieh Association, this serves as official notice and call of the annual membership meeting. The annual meeting will be held Saturday, January 10, 2015, commencing at 3:00 p.m., at the DoubleTree by Hilton Denver-Stapleton North hotel in Denver, Colo. The meeting will be held during the American Gelbvieh Association Annual Convention. The purpose of the meeting shall be the election of directors to fill the offices of those directors whose terms are expiring or which are presently vacant, to ratify the previous actions of the Board of Directors, and for the transaction of other business as may properly come before the meeting. The nominating committee recommends the following slate of nominees for the five open positions on the AGA Board of Directors. Other nominations may be accepted from the floor during the annual meeting.
• Don Danell, Montana • Andy LeDoux, Kansas (seeking re-election) • Neal Pearson, South Dakota (seeking re-election) • Dustin Rippe, Nebraska • Lowell Rogers, Mississippi • Duane Strider, North Carolina (seeking re-election) Any member who is unable to attend the AGA annual meeting may request an absentee ballot by phone, email, mail or fax for election of directors. To obtain an absentee ballot, a member must submit his or her application to the American Gelbvieh Association office not more than 60 days (November 10, 2014) nor less than ten days (December 31, 2014) prior to the annual meeting, and must be in good standing with the Association at least sixty (60) days prior to the annual meeting. Ballots must be returned to the AGA office by 4:30 p.m. on Friday, January 9, 2015 to be counted at the annual meeting on Saturday, January 10, 2015.
Hall of Fame Inductee THE AMERICAN GELBVIEH Association will induct John C. Oswald posthumously into its Hall of Fame for 2015. The Hall of Fame induction presentation will be made on Saturday, January 10 at 7:00 p.m. during the 2015 AGA Annual Convention. John, his wife Liz, their son Andy and his family own and manage The Land of Ozz – John C. Oswald & Sons Gelbvieh and Balancer in Hutchinson, Kan. Herdsman Ken Schmucker handles the ranch’s day-to-day operations. John passed away on January 26, 2012, after being diagnosed with leukemia late the previous year. Ken and Andy are leading The Land of Ozz from the lessons instilled by John. John's legacy to the operation is powerful performance, strong maternal traits, good temperament and absence of problems. John had previously acted as a past president of the American Polled Herford Association and was a long term board member 34 | NOVEMBER 2014
of the Kansas State Fair Board. John lived and loved the livestock industry and its people. In the late 1980s, John switched his breeding program from Polled Herefords to Gelbvieh, seeing a John C. Oswald brighter future in the Gelbvieh breed. Many breed-leading animals have carried the OZZ prefix, perhaps the most noteworthy of which is OZZ EXT Govenor 3N. Born in 2003, Govenor currently has 2,087 progeny recorded in the AGA herdbook. Today, Govener’s EPDs rank him in the top 25 percent or better of active Gelbvieh sires for birth weight, weaning weight, yearling weight, milk, calving ease maternal, heifer pregnancy, dry matter intake, yield grade, carcass weight, ribeye area, marbling and $Cow; in the top four percent of the breed for total maternal and 30-month pregnancy; and the top two percent of the breed for feeder profit index.

NWSS Entries due November 20 ALL BEEF ENTRIES for the 2015 National Western Stock Show are due November 20. This includes entries for the National Gelbvieh and Balancer® Show, Gelbvieh and Balancer Pen Bull Show and the Junior Gelbvieh and Balancer Show. Remember that all entries must include a registration number. Members can use the AGA online animal registry system to register a 2014 calf. The NWSS exhibitor handbook is available online at www.nationalwestern.com. Entries may also be completed online. Remember that entry fees for NWSS have increased. Please check the exhibitor handbook for more information. Gelbvieh and Balancer exhibitors should note that the NWSS will handle all stalling assignments. Please contact the NWSS directly regarding any stalling needs or concerns.
Heifer Mart Continues THE HEIFER MART is a marketing opportunity for purebred cattle producers at the National Western Stock Show. Cattlemen can enter groups of three to five head of either heifer calves or bred yearlings. There will be a designated area in the Yards set up for the Heifer Mart where these cattle will be displayed on tie rails. Night tie outs will also be provided. There will not be a show associated with these cattle. These females are on display with the intention of selling them by private treaty or for breeders to have an opportunity to display their breeding program as a part of their overall marketing program. Similar to the NWSS Herd Sire displays, reservations for a spot in the Heifer Mart will be on a first come first serve basis made. The Heifer Mart will accommodate cattle by breed during the same time periods that each respective breed arrives and is released from the Yards. Entry fees will be $100 per head payable at time of entry. For more information visit www. nationalwestern.com or contact the NWSS Livestock Office. 36 | NOVEMBER 2014

“The Gelbvieh breed perseveres through the tough times by being a smart, easy crossbreeding solution, excelling in maternal performance, offering cutting edge selection tools, and having adaptability to all markets and environments.” - Rob Arnold, July 2013 Gelbvieh World
A Q&A with AGA President Rob Arnold A few final thoughts from AGA President Rob Arnold on his six years on the Board of Directors, the future of the American Gelbvieh Association, and his Gelbvieh operation. By Megan Slater
cattle that will keep us and our customers profitable. We strive to produce cattle that excel in performance, offer genetics that will yield and grade above industry standards, and that possess the maternal characteristics and disposition that customers appreciate about Gelbvieh cattle.
What excites you about the Gelbvieh breed? ROB ARNOLD IS finishing up his six years on American Gelbvieh Association Board of Directors, including two years as Association president. Before he leaves his leadership role in January, Gelbvieh World asked Rob some questions about his Gelbvieh operation, the AGA, and what he has enjoyed most about serving on the Board of Directors. Rob owns and operates Cranview Gelbvieh in Minot, N.D., with his father and brother.
Rob: There are a number of things that excite me about the Gelbvieh breed, but the people I have met and worked with are the most exciting to me. One of the highlights for me is the hiring of our new executive director. Myron has a vision for the industry, for how Gelbvieh cattle fit in the industry, and for the team that it will take to accomplish this. We have a membership
Describe Cranview Gelbvieh. Rob: Cranview Gelbvieh is a family owned operation that is managed by my brother, Bill, my dad, Louis, and myself. It is made up of approximately 150 purebred Gelbvieh & Balancer® cows. We use artificial insemination, embryo transfer and natural service to create our genetics. Our extensive ET program, which includes implanting 75 to 100 embryos per year, allows us to build and maintain a superior gene pool in our future cows.
What are the goals of Cranview Gelbvieh? Rob: Our goal is to produce genetically superior

that is motivated to exploit our strengths and improve our weaknesses. A successful leader and a motivated membership should be a good recipe to succeed.
How do Gelbvieh genetics fit in the industry? Rob: Gelbvieh cattle offer three key attributes that are almost a necessity in order for a breed to survive in
•
Performance;
•
Maternal characteristics;
•
Carcass quality (genetics that offer an enjoyable eating experience for the consumer).
We can proudly say, and the industry would agree, that Gelbvieh cattle excel in at least two of these and we have made significant improvements in carcass quality. These characteristics will keep us, our cattle, and our customers relevant in a very dynamic beef business for a long time.

UPPER MIDWEST “The American Gelbvieh Association needs to develop a strategy, view change as an opportunity, and keep sight of the long-term vision to remain competitive in a very dynamic and changing environment.” - Rob Arnold, August 2014 Gelbvieh World
started with Gelbvieh? Rob: It takes a long time to build a successful cow herd. My advice to someone getting started in the Gelbvieh business would be to do your homework, and find a few really good cows with the criteria that fit your breeding plan. You will be money ahead at the end of the day.
What do you think the AGA will look like in the future and what will its purpose be? Rob: I think the future is bright for the AGA. There have been a number of initiatives that have been explored but the emphasis on getting the American Gelbvieh Foundation established as a critical entity of the AGA is a promising sign for our long-term viability. As far as what our association looks like in the future, I think it will look a lot like what it looks like today. The AGA’s purpose will be to facilitate breed improvement, educate members, and cooperate with other breeds to guarantee survival of more than one breed.
What are some of the future opportunities for the American Gelbvieh Association and the Gelbvieh Breed? How can we capitalize on those opportunities? Rob: The AGA has the people, the genetics, and the vision to

remain one of the key breeds in the cattle industry. Our association has had significant investments from individual breeders to identify and propagate genetics that require fewer inputs to accomplish the same outcomes. We need to do a better job of exploiting these advancements and communicating all the things that Gelbvieh cattle are good at: maternal, performance, carcass, and disposition.
What have you enjoyed most during your years on the Board? Rob: I think the thing that I’ve enjoyed the most is the same thing that excites me, the people! It has been a huge challenge without a full-time executive director the past six years, but it has also forced a closer working relationship with other members. I have sure enjoyed the opportunity of getting to know a lot of very talented individuals that are part of our Gelbvieh team.

What is your greatest accomplishment, either with Cranview Gelbvieh or as a Board member? Rob: I really don’t know if it is an accomplishment or an honor, but the opportunity to serve as the AGA president sure makes me proud. There is a definite feeling of accomplishment when you are chosen to lead by your peers. I just want to thank everyone for their support! I am truly humbled. FFF

COMMUNICATION NOTE Make Something Great Happen P.T. Barnum is credited for saying, “Without promotion, something terrible happens…nothing.” By Jennifer Scharpe PHINEAS TAYLOR BARNUM was an American showman, a businessman, an author, publisher, philanthropist and even a politician. He is most remembered for founding the Barnum & Bailey Circus in the late 1800s, which later merged with Ringling Bros., and became known as “The Greatest Show on Earth.” Barnum lived from 1810 to 1891 and is said to be the ultimate promoter. The story goes when Barnum was told that an idea wouldn’t work, he responded by “doubling down.” He was said to be a man of courage, willing to take risks. But he was always focused on delivering exceptional value to his customers. One of Barnum’s notable sayings is, “Without promotion, something terrible happens… nothing.” As you begin to prepare for the 2015 spring sale season, think about your promotion efforts. Gelbvieh World and Gelbvieh Media Productions have many services to assist breeders in promoting their programs and upcoming sales. There is no other publication that has the ability to promote the breed and reach your potential customers – Gelbvieh seedstock breeders and commercial cattle producers using Gelbvieh genetics – as with Gelbvieh World and The Profit Picture. Gelbvieh World has a circulation of 5,000 readers and The Profit Picture is mailed to more than 42,000 commercial cow-calf 42 | NOVEMBER 2014
producers. Consider starting a six-month or an eleven-month advertising contract and receive savings on ad rates. The contracts ask breeders to place at minimum a ¼ page ad in six issues or 11 issues. The ads can be placed in any of the 11 issues of Gelbvieh World and the two issues of The Profit Picture. The ad size can vary each month. Many advertisers are realizing they are already running at least four or five ads in the magazine. By committing to a couple more ads per year, you receive significant savings and get the benefit of increased promotion. Our fastest growing service is the GELBVIEH SALES email blasts. The mailing list for this service consists of about 3,000 email addresses including Gelbvieh seedstock breeders, junior members and commercial customers. Reserve your email blast date today as dates fill up quickly. Gelbvieh Media Productions offers a wide array of services to meet all of your marketing and design needs. Consider updating your logo, creating a brochure or flyer, or even have GMP provide a bid for your sale catalog. For more information on any of these services or to reserve your magazine ad or email blast, please contact Jennifer or Lynn at the AGA office. Don’t let something terrible happen. Through promotion, your sale could be a great one. FFF

JUNIOR VOICE
Gelbvieh Youth of Merit Gelbvieh is taking its role in producing real-world leaders. By Grace Hammer AS A MEMBER of a collegiate livestock judging team, I am constantly travelling to different operations across the country. One of my favorite parts of the trips includes being introduced to the producers and getting to introduce myself. Usually my introduction is “Hi, my name is Grace Hammer. I am a sophomore on the livestock judging team at Hutchinson Community College. My family owns and operates Grund Beef Genetics and we run approximately 400 head consisting mostly of Gelbvieh and Balancer® cattle in short grass country.” It’s usually not a surprise that many people I talk to aren’t quite as familiar with the Gelbvieh breed as some of the other breeds.
As some people may know, (especially those who follow me on social media) I am quite proud of my cattle. In fact, I will take every chance I get to have a conversation What is truly impressive is the focus and with someone drive that I see in the Gelbvieh youth. about the beef I am always excited to see how many industry, genetics participants compete in the bred and in our herd, owned show, and the contests at junior new AI sires, or recent shows I’ve nationals and those who are willing to been to. the skills I’ve developed, and the memories I’ve made will be lifelong. What is truly impressive is the focus and drive that I see in the Gelbvieh youth. I am always excited to see how many participants compete in the bred and owned show, and the contests at junior nationals and those who are willing to expand their knowledge of Gelbvieh cattle and the beef industry. In August, at the POWER Conference, I watched approximately 20 Gelbvieh juniors tour some elite operations, learn and practice leadership responsibilities, and work on team building. The professionalism and poise of our juniors in interacting with the Limousin juniors was phenomenal. I’m proud to
recognize those who are now industry leaders and “grew up with Gelbvieh,” many of which were on the junior board during my first few Junior Classic shows. Gelbvieh is taking its role in producing realworld leaders. The American Gelbvieh Junior Association has a bright future because of our “Youth of MERIT.” I wish you all good luck in your activities this fall and encourage you to stay involved and embrace each opportunity that will continue to set you apart.
