POST ROCK CATTLE COMPANY

Welcome to this year’s edition of the Cowman’s Kind Bull and Female Sale. 2022 proved to be a year most people in the central plains would like to forget with record high expenses and feed prices combined with record low crop yields and tough drought decisions almost daily in the cattle business. 2022 also proved to be a year we won’t soon forget at Post Rock. Son-in-law, Will Johnson, joined us full time to head up the farming side of our operation (what a year to start!) after several years of being a very successful Vo-Ag teacher.

We were thrilled to have won seven banners in the AGF Scale and Rail contest and were especially happy that two more of our resident sires were awarded the Grand Champion Pen of Carcass Value Steers, Probity in the Balancer division and 32F9 (Roy) in the purebred division. This makes 4 of our resident herd sires to have achieved this honor with Game Changer in 2019 and Young Gun in 2021 also being named sire group winners. Most recently, at the Cattleman’s Congress we were so humbled and honored to have Post Rock Prominent 139K8 selected by the Balancer Futurity membership as the People’s Choice Balancer Futurity Champion Bull. In addition, we were fortunate to have had the purebred runner up in the Purebred Futurity with Post Rock Black Box 150K1 (Lot 1). To top it off, both our Purebred Pen of Three and Balancer Pen of Three hung a banner in the National Pen Bull Show. We are so proud of Kyle and his hard work for making this happen.

Informed buying decisions become more and more important every day. Every bull selling will have current GENOMIC ENHANCED EPDs as of the catalog print deadline. Every bull has been DNA tested or known by birthright to be homozygous polled or homozygous black. In addition, every bull selling has been DNA sire verified, and any bull that had potential to have any known genetic defects from Angus has been DNA tested free. Finally, every bull selling has been ultrasounded for ribeye area (REA) and intramuscular fat (IMF, marbling) to aid in your sire selections. DNA testing and ultrasound collection are a major expense of both money and time commitment, but we feel they are necessary to positively impact buyers’ decisions and profitability while giving us future insight into genetic matings.

This year’s sale offering is extremely strong. The bulls are a tremendous group and are loaded from top to bottom in both the Purebred and Balancer divisions. We are offering many new AI sire groups to choose from, and some of our most proven genetics sell in volume sire groups. Many of the cows who produced this bull crop have multiple generations of AI and ET matings stacked to produce the highest quality herd sires available. Over 600 cows and many AI and ET matings were used to produce the bulls selling this year, and the sale offering reflects that level of culling and commitment. Additionally, we feel the 6-year-old and the 2-year-old females are an extremely strong group as well. Many of the elite, proven donors of the breed are the dams or the granddams of several females selling. We are proud of each and every bull and female selling, and each animal is expected to have a positive impact on their new owner’s herd.

As in the past, we have bulls from our cooperator herds: Meadowlark Gelbvieh, Dawson Creek Gelbvieh, Twin Oak Gelbvieh, and Stucky Beef Genetics. Our cooperator herds allow us to increase selection pressure placed on the bulls and make it possible for us to offer more and better bulls. We share in the income from these bulls, and they are represented and guaranteed just like our bulls. Should a problem arise, you will deal with Post Rock.

We hope to assist you in increasing your profitability, as our survival in the seedstock business is based on it. We have learned from experience that, unfortunately, we cannot spend enough time with each of you on sale day. We encourage you to call or visit at any time prior to the sale. We look forward to seeing you February 25 at the sale.

Sincerely

Leland Clark
