PRESIDENT’S VIEW

Making an Impact How would you respond if you were asked the question: What is the title of the American Gelbvieh Association’s long-range strategic plan? Would you say, Impacting the Beef BusinessTM? What would you say if you were asked: Is Gelbvieh having an impact? By Rob Arnold CEDAR TOP RANCH, Stapleton, Neb., recently marketed over 1,000 head of Balancer® steers and heifers on Superior Livestock Auction’s Week in the Rockies XXVI video cattle auction. These Balancer cattle topped the sale in four different weight classes with a $39 price spread on 800 pound steers (ranging from $201 to $240) and a $36 spread on the 900 pound steers (ranging from $195 to $231). That’s a difference of more than $300 per head on 800 and 900 pound steers!

impacting the beef business and how Gelbvieh is impacting many producers’ bottom line. Is that the extent of the strategic plan?

There are many priorities in the AGA’s long-range strategic plan, which many of you had input in. The strategic plan is available at www.Gelbvieh.org, under the Membership tab. The Association continues to take these priorities seriously with the intent of keeping Gelbvieh at the fore front of the industry. The plan will always be somewhat fluid, but the intent is to remain focused on keeping Gelbvieh relevant in the cattle business.

With feed yards using technology advances to follow groups of cattle, they are recognizing and accepting the fact that some cattle are worth more than others. In this case, these Gelbvieh influenced Balancer cattle were worth the most money and would return a bigger profit to the feed yard operator’s bottom line than any other cattle offered at auction that day in those weight classes.

The Association continues to take these priorities seriously with the intent of keeping Gelbvieh at the fore front of the industry.

Feedlots are recognizing that these types of cattle are more efficient than the high percentage English cattle. In addition, Gelbvieh influenced cattle with the right genetics are grading and yielding better than industry standards.

In an effort to keep our momentum going, I am proud to welcome the American Gelbvieh Association’s new executive director, Myron Edelman. Myron comes to us from the Red Angus Association of America where he held a number of positions in which he was extremely successful. His knowledge of the feeder calf industry, as well as his successful implementation of feeder calf programs, will pay huge dividends in generating additional demand for Gelbvieh genetics.

In the last month, our family marketed a semi load of cull cattle that were born in the spring of 2013. Most of these cattle were 50-75 percent Gelbvieh Balancer cattle. The base price that week for dressed beef was $2.55 per pound, with premiums and discounts applying based on the grid that these cattle sold on. In the load, 78 percent of the animals graded Choice or better with 30 percent grading CAB. Needless to say, this was a pretty good pay day on a semi load of Gelbvieh Balancer fat cattle with a net take home pay of $2.59 per pound. These are two examples of how Gelbvieh cattle are 6 | SEPTEMBER 2014

Are we impacting the beef business? My response to that question is: Rome wasn’t built in a day but we are well on our way! FFF

Program Genetics 223M2 has produced a total of 183 calves registered with the AGA between 2004 and 2013. She is sure to have many more as she has produced over 600 embryos in her lifetime and is still producing well over 20 embryos per flush. Her first calf, Post Rock Granite 200P2, is still her most noteworthy progeny, but in our operation, her most valuable contribution is the 40+ daughters in production. Owned with Twin Oak Gelbvieh and Middle Creek Farms.

Wilma is no longer with us; however, she produced 88 progeny registered in her lifetime, and we still have a few embryos in the tank. Our partners at Dawson Creek and we have discussed many times the fact that Wilma’s daughters are some of our best producers and many times have out-produced the grand old lady herself. At Post Rock, we’re really proud to have bred these two highly proven and breed-influential donors. We look forward to their genetic contribution from their many progeny for years to come. EXECUTIVE’S VIEW Meet Myron Edelman, Executive Director of the American Gelbvieh Association The American Gelbvieh Association would like you to meet its new executive director. Myron G. Edelman of Douglas, Wyo., who officially filled that position on August 1, will be located at the AGA headquarters office in Westminster, Colo. “I AM EXCITED to join the American Gelbvieh Association to lead this staff towards ‘Impacting the Beef Business’. The AGA Board of Directors has taken an aggressive approach towards placing AGA in a competitive position in the beef industry,” says Edelman. “I look forward to working with the AGA membership and staff to meet the demand for superior genetics in the strongest cattle market the world has ever experienced.” Since 2009, Edelman has been with the Red Angus Association of America, initially as the director of added-value programs and most recently as the director of breed growth. He led the RAAA in developing marketing strategies to benefit Red Angus stakeholders, including the Feeder Calf

Certification Program (FCCP) that provides traceability for Red Angus influenced feeder calves. Edelman was responsible for developing partnerships with commercial cowcalf producers, cattle feeders and packers to maximize value for cattle at each stage of the beef supply chain. Prior to his breed association work, Edelman was the cattle and feedlot manager for Wagonhound Land and Livestock Co., LLC, a 2,500 head cow-calf operation in Wyoming that included a 4,500 head feed yard unit. A native of Sabetha, Kan., his experience began in feed yard, farm and stocker country. Edelman attended Kansas State University in Manhattan, Kan., earning a degree in agriculture education and animal science.

VIEW OF THE NUMBERS New Maternal and Economic Selection Tools for Gelbvieh and Balancer® Animals The American Gelbvieh Association has released a series of new selection tools for Gelbvieh and Balancer® animals. These new tools include changes and additions to the Association’s maternal EPDs, plus new economic selection indexes. By AGA Staff PROVIDING THE BEST and most reliable tools for genetic evaluation of Gelbvieh and Balancer animals is a key principle of the American Gelbvieh Association. To that end, the AGA has recently completed several research projects that have been released as part of the Association’s national cattle evaluation, giving producers the opportunity to use these calculations

more consistently for selection of breeding animals. The research projects were funded in part by the American Gelbvieh Foundation.

Maternal traits New tools to quantify and select for maternal traits are now readily available. These tools include EPDs for heifer pregnancy and 30-month pregnancy, and the $Cow index. The heifer pregnancy (HP) EPD predicts the probability that a bull’s daughters will become pregnant as first-calf heifers in a regular breeding season, expressed as a percent. A higher value of this EPD is favorable, meaning that a higher percentage of a sire’s daughters get pregnant as first calf heifers compared to other sires in his contemporary group.

The AGA has recently completed several research projects that have been released as part of the Association’s national cattle evaluation, giving producers the opportunity to use these calculations more consistently for selection of breeding animals. The 30-month pregnancy (PG30) EPD predicts the probability that a bull’s daughters will become pregnant and calve at three years of age, given that they calved as first-calf heifers. This EPD is expressed as a percent, again, with a higher number being more favorable meaning a higher percentage of a sire’s daughters will calve at three years of age, given they calved as first-calf heifers. The $Cow index represents the genetic value in dollars of profit of an animal when retained as a replacement female relative to other animals in the herd. A higher number represents more profitable genetics for maternal productivity. $Cow will serve producers in selecting bulls that will sire daughters with stayability and reproductive efficiency as well as other traits that lead to profitability in a production system, such as milk, calving ease, moderate mature weight and the ability

of calves to gain. A female’s genetics also influence the performance of her calves in the feedlot and at slaughter, so traits such as feed efficiency and carcass value are also included in $Cow. In addition, the AGA has changed the names of the calving ease calculations to be more accurate in naming these traits. The calving ease EPD has been changed to calving ease direct (CED), which predicts the percent of unassisted births of a bull’s calves when he is used on heifers. The calving ease daughters EPD has been changed to calving ease maternal (CEM), which predicts the percent of unassisted births in a sire’s first-calving daughters. The meaning of these predictions is exactly the same as they were before, only the names have changed.

Intake and carcass traits Beyond the research for maternal traits, the AGA has completed research on traits to measure intake and feed efficiency. The dry matter intake EPD is now readily available, as well an efficiency profit index has been released.

The dry matter intake (DMI) EPD represents the average daily dry matter intake per day consumed in pounds. A negative or lesser value is more favorable. For example, Bull A has a DMI EPD of .15 and Bull B has a DMI EPD of -.20, so the progeny of Bull B consume, on average, .35 pound less dry matter per day than progeny from Bull A. The efficiency profit index (EPI) is an economic selection index developed to aid producers in selecting for more feed efficient cattle that still have acceptable amounts of gain. The EPI provides slight negative pressure on intake, while keeping gain at a constant value. By selecting on this index, producers will be able to find those animals that gain the same amount as their contemporaries while eating less. To simplify selection for carcass traits, the AGA has released the feeder profit index, replacing the Association’s previous two carcass indexes: carcass value (CV) and feedlot merit (FM). To aid producers in selecting sires whose progeny will perform in the feedlot and are sold on grade and yield, the feeder

A visit to the Denver Aquarium, and tours of Rocky Mountain Sire Services in Bennett, Colo., and Jumping Cow Gelbvieh in Ramah, Colo., rounded out the weekend activities. “The POWER conference was a great success and we look forward to making this a permanent part of both junior associations’ program activities by hosting the conference every other year,” says Carrie Tilghman, junior activities coordinator for the American Gelbvieh Association. profit index (FPI) was created. High ranking sires for FPI have higher marbling and carcass weight than their contemporaries. As a terminal index, little emphasis is put on maternal traits such as stayability and calving ease.

Additional tools for members Members of the American Gelbvieh Association have access to additional EPDs to aid in their breeding of seedstock genetics. These additional EPDs include mature weight, average daily gain, and residual feed intake. Members have access to the full suite of EPDs and indexes by logging into their member accounts on the AGA registry service.

in pounds of mature weight of a sire’s progeny compared to their contemporaries. The average daily gain (ADG) EPD predicts the difference in average daily gain in pounds based on an animal’s performance during a feed intake test period. The residual feed intake (RFI) EPD is defined as the difference between an animal’s actual daily feed intake and its predicted daily intake based on growth rate and body size. Animals with a positive RFI value are deemed more inefficient because they consume more than expected while animals with a negative RFI value are considered more efficient because they consume less than expected. A Snapshot View of the Barnyard Classic

The 34th annual American Gelbvieh Junior Association (AGJA) Junior Classic was held at the W.H Lyon Fairgrounds in Sioux Falls, S.D., June 29 through July 4, 2014. The 2014 Barnyard Classic saw 157 AGJA members from 16 states that met and exhibited 251 head of Gelbvieh and Balancer速 cattle.

Holly Hoffman, pictured with the Junior Board, from Season 21 of Survivor delivered an inspirational message to the juniors at the opening ceremonies.

Juniors have to get up early in the morning to get their animals fed and taken care of before the contests and shows begin. Above, Gabrielle, Grace, and Grady Hammer come in from tie outs.

16 | SEPTEMBER 2014

Juniors have the opportunity to use their creative side in the contests such as poster, photo, graphic design, and video. Above are some examples of the senior poster contest entries.

The team fitting contest gives the juniors a chance to work as a team and show off their fitting skills.

Juniors put their knowledge of the beef industry to the test during the skill-a-thon contest. A mock skill-a-thon contest can be found in this issue on page 46 for you to test your own skills.

Lucas Beying from Kansas is selling his heifer to the judges in the sales talk contest.

In the judging contest, junior members test their decision making and evaluation skills to place four different classes of cattle.

The final go-round for the senior showmanship contest was filled with intense moments as 22 juniors competed to be named in the top ten.

When juniors aren’t competing in the contests or showing, they spend their time hanging out in the barn.

For the quiz bowl contest, junior members study a set of statements to be able to beat their opponents to the buzzer to answer questions.

Jessie Lowe from Missouri after she won champion in the junior showmanship contest. She was happy to win a belt buckle.

JUNIOR VOICE

The Best Junior National Show The 2014 Barnyard Classic held in Sioux Falls, South Dakota was a successful and fun week! By Kelsey Sheeley JUNIORS FROM 16 states attended this year’s Junior Classic. Juniors participated in events such as sales talk, showmanship, skill-a-thon, the Gelbvieh and Balancer® shows, and much more. One of my favorite things about the junior national show has to be the people. The Gelbvieh breed is one big family. I have never seen a breed association that got along so well and supports each other so much. At my first Gelbvieh junior national show in Chillicothe, Missouri, I was welcomed with open arms. I have shown other breeds in the past, and I had not experienced the welcome I received at the Gelbvieh show at any other junior national show that I have attended. I made so many new friends that year and have made many more since then! I believe the Gelbvieh breed puts on the best junior national show of all the junior breed associations that I have been a part of. The hard work and dedication of the host states and the American Gelbvieh Association staff makes our Junior Classic amazing. From the hospitality to the awards – and let us not forget the delicious food –

we have such an awesome breed association that no one could possibly top. I want to give a huge shout out to South Dakota this year for being amazing hosts and hostesses. The state host committee put in so many hours of hard work and planning to pull off such a large event.

One of my favorite things about the junior national show has to be the people. As the junior national show came to a close, it was very hard to part ways with all of my Gelbvieh friends, and I’m 100 percent sure I am not alone. Good thing we all have Facebook, Instagram and Twitter to keep up with one another until we all are together again! (Well most of us anyway.) Now that we are all home and preparing to attend our next show, the Ohio Association is planning next year’s great American Gelbvieh Junior Association Junior Classic! Mark your calendars and plan to join us June 28-July 3, 2015 in Springfield, Ohio for the Heart of it All Classic. We all are so excited to welcome everyone to the Buckeye State! FFF

Many Thanks to the Barnyard Classic Sponsors Many thanks to the sponsors, supporters, and friends who helped make the 2014 American Gelbvieh Junior Association Barnyard Classic a huge success. Putting on a show of this nature would not be possible without the generous donations and support from the show sponsors. More than $75,000 in cash and in-kind donations were given to host the Barnyard Classic. On behalf of the South Dakota Junior Gelbvieh Association, the AGJA members, and the Barnyard Classic participants, their families, and the AGA staff, we give you our sincere thanks.

JUNIOR NEWS American Gelbvieh Junior Association Names 2014-2015 Ambassadors Two junior members were selected at the American Gelbvieh Junior Association (AGJA) 2014 Barnyard Classic to represent the AGJA as ambassadors. Jessie Lowe of Adrian, Mo., was selected to be the 2014-2015 AGJA Junior Ambassador. Taylor Vavra, Nisland, S.D., was chosen to be the 2014-2015 AGJA Intermediate Ambassador. By Megan Slater JESSIE IS THE nine year old daughter of Raymond and Melissa Lowe and she is excited to share her love of Gelbvieh throughout the coming year. In addition to this new role, she is very active in several other junior associations including Altona 4-H club, Missouri Junior Cattlemen’s Association, and Heart of America Gelbvieh Junior Association, just to name a few. “I thought it would be great to help other people love Gelbvieh as much as I do,” says Jessie. “I think if people knew more about Gelbvieh and what they can do for them, more people would love them as much as I do. This is the first goal I have as Junior Ambassador.” She has even started a Facebook group page called Missouri Gelbvieh where people can post pictures and other news about all things Gelbvieh. Jessie currently raises Gelbvieh and Balancer® cattle along with her brother, Baxter and sister, Isabel. She obtained her first Gelbvieh heifer, named Sweetheart, in March 2013 and has gone to 23 shows with her so far, including the Missouri State Fair, American Royal, and National Western Stock Show. She looks forward to going to even more

34 | SEPTEMBER 2014

Gelbvieh events in the next year and spreading her love for the breed. Taylor is the 15 year old daughter of Brent and Eve Vavra. She is currently involved in 4-H, FFA, cheerleading, golf, community band, and has been a member of the AGJA since 1998. “When I was first registered as a member of AGJA, my grandparents gifted me with my first Gelbvieh cow,” said Taylor. “Gelbvieh has opened many doors for me, and has helped me to meet many new people.” Taylor is also very involved with her own heard and shows her animals all over including at the National Western Stock Show, Northern International Livestock Exposition, Black Hills Stock Show, Butte-Lawrence County Fair, and AGJA junior national show. Her herd currently consists of 11 cows where she handles everything from money management to late night calving checks. Taylor’s younger sister, Carlee, was the 2013-2014 AGJA Junior Ambassador and having learned things from her sister, is excited to promote the AGJA herself. “As the older sister, I have seen behind the scenes of Carlee’s ambassadorship

and it fuels my fire,” added Taylor. The ambassador competition was held during the junior national show, which took place June 29 through July 4 in Sioux Falls, S.D. The Junior Ambassador must be eight to 11 years of age and the Intermediate Ambassador must be 12 to 15 years old. The AGJA created the ambassador program to encourage youth involvement in the breed’s activities. The ambassadors represent the AGJA at Gelbvieh functions throughout the year including Gelbvieh and Balancer shows held at the American Royal, the North American International Livestock Exposition and the National Western Stock Show, along with many state fairs and other events. The ambassador candidates are judged on their notebook, an oral interview, a speech given at the AGJA annual meeting and overall conduct during the annual junior national show. The notebook includes information and photographs on activities, awards and organizations as well as an essay on the candidate’s background and experiences with the Gelbvieh breed. A committee is appointed to conduct the interviews and select the Ambassadors. The American Gelbvieh Junior Association serves more than 500 members nationally. The vision of the AGJA is to unify, educate, and develop leaders of the beef industry. To learn more about Gelbvieh or the American Gelbvieh Junior Association visit www.gelbvieh.org. FFF

SKILL-A-THON Test Your Skills – Mock Skill-A-Thon Contest The American Gelbvieh Junior Association Junior Classic skill-a-thon contest encourages AGJA members to learn the importance and techniques of record keeping and data collection. Participants test their knowledge and skills through a series of stations including carcass evaluation, registration

paper identification, udder scoring, EPDs (matching and definition), tool identification, and meat cuts identification. Below is a mock skill-a-thon contest, very similar to what junior members did at the Junior Classic, for you to test your own skills and knowledge. The answers can be found on page 52.

COMMUNICATION NOTE The National Junior Show Community Beyond the cattle, the contests, the ribbons, belt buckles and awards, a community is created at a national junior breed show. By Jennifer Scharpe THE FIRST NATIONAL junior show I ever attended was in Des Moines, Iowa when I was 15 years old. I went there with the sole purpose of competing in the public speaking contest. Des Moines was only a four hour drive from my house and only a two hour drive from my grandparents’ house. The night before the contest my mom, dad and I drove to my grandparents’ house, and then got up early the next morning to drive to Des Moines. We watched the show in the morning and I gave my speech in the afternoon. The original plan was we were only going to spend one day at the show so we took in as much of it as possible. One the way back home that night, we knew we were hooked on the junior national show experience. There is something about a national junior breed show that surpasses all other showing experiences. There is a prestige to it, a feeling of awe for competing on a national level. During that one week of the summer, a community is built. Hundreds of people from across the country are gathered in one location for one purpose – to celebrate a breed of cattle and their junior members. Junior members participate to compete in the many educational contests, to show off their talents in the show ring, to have fun and meet new friends. Parent, grandparents, and friends attend to be in the cheering section for their junior 50 | SEPTEMBER 2014

member. Breed enthusiasts attend to see the finest display of cattle the breed has to offer and to evaluate sires and genetics to incorporate in their breeding program. Those within the beef industry attend to keep on the pulse of what is happening within the industry. A community is formed. Beyond the lifelong friendships, think about the industry and breed leaders, both current and future, that one interacts with during the week. It is entirely possible that your judge in a contest could write you a letter of recommendation or even be your future boss. The person standing in front of you in the showring could be your college roommate or future co-worker. The impressions a junior member makes on others attending the show can last a lifetime and can open doors for your future. My parents and I did make a second trip to Iowa that week back to the junior national show. The junior activities coordinator had recommended that we attend the awards ceremony at the end of the week. I had won fifth place in the public speaking contest. During my junior show career I competed in five national junior shows and have attended many others with my younger siblings. I have also attended six Gelbvieh junior national shows. No matter the breed and no matter the year, there is something special about a national junior show. FFF
