Bull & Female Sale

Gelbvieh and Balancer

Southwest Iowa

Friday, March 19, 2021 • 1 p.m. (CST) Creston Livestock Auction • Creston, Iowa Breeding Guarantee: All bulls have been semen tested and will be

Welcome to our 12th Annual Bull and Female Sale!

fully guaranteed to be capable of settling healthy, sound and fertile cows of breeding age. Bulls selling for $3,000 or more will carry an additional guarantee against injury effecting breeding as declared by a licensed veterinarian; and not injured due to abuse or neglect. This guarantee is for the spring breeding period. The seller will give the purchaser of the bull credit at next year’s sale for one half of the purchase price, minus the salvage value. Seller of the bull must be notified immediately if injury occurs. If any other problems occur, the terms and conditions as stated by the breeding guarantee of the AGA (in the back of this catalog), will be in effect. Any guarantee is between the individual seller and the purchaser.

The Southwest Iowa Gelbvieh and Balancer Group would like to thank all of our customers and all who have shown interest in our cattle over the last eleven years. You can drive as far as you want and not find better seedstock than we offer. The bulls have all been tested for feed efficiency, ultra-sounded, scrotal measured and sement tested. Bulls have been fed for soundness, longevity and ease of handling from birth to buyer. The bulls have been fed in a feed efficiency program which automatically weighs all the feed consumed and at the time of day. If you choose high efficiency bulls and retain heifers from them, in a few generations (as have been studied and tested by universities and cattle testing stations such as Werner Feed Efficiency Testing Center), you can achieve feed efficient cattle that can save as much as $100 per cow per year in feed costs. On 100 cows that translates to $10,000 saved!

Online bidding: Contact Cody Frey at (641) 344-6112 or the sale barn at (641) 782-7025. To view only, the sale can be seen on www.cattleusa.com. To be able to bid, click on submit and then contact Cody Frey or the sale barn three (3) days prior to the sale.

Thanks to Cody Frey and his crew at the Creston Livestock Auction for all the work they have done and to Cole Miller who did the clipping and fitting of the bulls and to Tucker Mittag who took the videos and pictures for the catalog. We would also like to thank Jane Adolph for her expertise in putting our catalog together over the past years.

Delivery: Any bull bringing over $3500 will be delivered free of

If we choose to collect semen we will work with the new owner and schedule the collection around his schedule. We will rarely exercise this option, but with all the new DNA technology we may want to use some of these genetics in the future.

tested and rated on all the major tests for breeding bulls; including ultra-sound for carcass, semen tested, scrotal measured, BVD tested and the new EPDs for weights, milk, carcass, etc. The new EPDs are more accurate through genetic testing, termed “Genomic Enhancement”. This is done by picking out genetic markers in blood samples for individual EPD traits and the degree they influence each trait. In the past EPDs have been calculated from many generations of weigths and growth. The addition of genomic markers for each trait, combining the past accumulated records gives us the more accurate genomic enhanced EPDs.

FEMALES: Females are guaranteed to be breeders, with the exception of female calves sold at side of dam, injury or disease occurring after time of sale, gross negligence or willful misconduct on the part of the purchaser, females used in ovum transplant after time of sale, females shown competitively after time of sale, and cows with calf at side. Cows represented as being “safe in calf” will have been examined by a licensed veterinarian and are so guaranteed. They are considered breeders without further guarantee. Females with a “due to calve” date in the remarks columns are considered safe in calf. A bred female is a female known to have been served by a bull either by natural breeding or artificial insemination, but it does not necessarily mean that the female is safe in calf to that service. A pasture-bred female is a female that has been exposed for the time stated, but it does not necessarily mean that this female is sale in calf to that bull. An open heifer is a virgin heifer that has never been exposed to a bull either through natural service or artificial insemination. An open cow is a cow that has not been exposed to a bull either through natural service or artificial insemination since the birth of her last calf. Calves sold off their dams (split pairs) shall carry the full breeding guarantee.

The liability of the seller shall not exceed the amount of the original purchase price and the seller must be notified in writing within 24 months following the date of purchase for this warranty to be enforceable. In the event an animal sold as homozygous black or homozygous polled is determined to be heterozygous for the warranted trait, the seller will make satisfactory replacement or refund the purchase price within a reasonable time. The seller must have the opportunity to inspect the calf in question and, at his cost, blood type or DNA test the calf and its parents and perform such other tests as necessary to confirm that the calf is heterozygous for the trait in question.

MALES: Bulls are guaranteed to be breeders (defined as ability to settle healthy cows by 18 months of age) with the exception of bull calves sold at the side of dam, injury or disease occurring to the animal after time of sale, and gross negligence or willful isconduct on the part of the purchaser. Any guarantees with respect to ability to freeze semen shall be made by separate agreement between the buyer and seller.

When an animal is sold as “eligible for registry” or “registry applied for,” the seller shall be responsible for obtaining the certificate of registry and for the proper transfer of the certificate to the purchaser including full payment of transfer fees.

ADJUSTMENTS: The following adjustments do not preclude the right of buyer and seller to mutually agree upon other terms and conditions for settlement of any dispute. All claims for adjustment or refund must be made in writing either within six (6) months from the time of sale or not later than six (6) months after the animal reaches eighteen (18) months of age, whichever occurs first, with the exception of claims involving misrepresentation of service sire or as otherwise provided herein. If a female is sold as “safe in calf” to a given sire or sires on a specified date or dates and proves not to be represented, the buyer is entitled to a refund of the purchase price from the seller upon return of the animal to the farm of the seller at the seller’s expense. In the event an animal is claimed to be a nonbreeder, the animal may be returned to the farm of the seller, at the buyer’s expense, if in good physical condition and the return is in compliance with the health requirements of the state where purchased. The seller shall be entitled a six (6) month trial period in which to prove the animal is a breeder, the seller shall, at his option, replace the animal with another of equal value or refund the purchase price. The sale will be tape recorded for future reference. RIGHTS AND OBLIGATIONS: The above terms and conditions of sale constitute a contract between the buyer and seller of each animal and shall be equally binding on both. EPD Definitions… Listed below are the definitions of American Gelbvieh Association EPDs and the units in which they are published. The EPDs with an asterisk (*) next to the name are available to members only. Maternal traits Calving ease direct (CED): Percent of unassisted births of a bull’s calves when he is used on heifers. A higher number is favorable, meaning better calving ease. This EPD can be vital to a rancher looking to decrease the amount of calves pulled in his herd. Milk (Milk): The genetic ability of a sire’s daughters to produce milk expressed in pounds of weaning weight. Calving ease maternal (CEM): Represented as percent of unassisted births in a sire’s first-calving daughters. A higher number represents more favorable calving ease. This EPD is important to a rancher’s bottom line because it predicts which animals produce daughters with a genetic predisposition to calve unassisted as heifers. Heifer pregnancy (HP): Predicts the probability that a bull’s daughters will become pregnant as first-calf heifers in a regular breeding season, expressed as a percent. A higher value of this EPD is favorable, meaning that a higher percentage of a sire’s daughters get pregnant as first calf heifers compared to other sires in his contemporary group. 30-month pregnancy (Pg30): Predicts the probability that a bull’s daughters will become pregnant and calve at three years of age, given that they calved as first-calf heifers. This EPD is expressed as a percent, again, with a higher number being more favorable meaning a higher percentage of a sire’s daughters will calve at three years of age, given they calved as first-calf heifers. Stayability (ST): Predicts the genetic difference, in terms of percent probability, that a bull’s daughters will stay productive within a herd to at least six year of age. The stayability EPD is one of the best measures currently available to compare a bull’s ability to produce females with reproductive longevity.

Fat (FT): Differences for fat thickness, in inches, for a carcass over the 12th rib, smaller numbers of fat thickness are preferable as excess fat can be detrimental to yield grade. Efficiency traits Dry matter intake (DMI): Represents the average daily dry matter intake per day consumed in pounds. A negative, or lesser value, is more favorable. For example, Bull A has a DMI EPD of .15 and Bull B has a DMI EPD of -.20, so the progeny of Bull B consume, on average, .35 pound less dry matter per day than progeny from Bull A. *Average daily gain (ADG): Difference in average daily gain in pounds based on an animal’s performance during a feed intake test period. *Residual feed intake (RFI): Defined as the difference between an animal’s actual daily feed intake and its predicted daily intake based on growth rate and body size. Animals with a positive RFI value are deemed more inefficient because they consume more than expected while animals with a negative RFI value are considered more efficient because they consume less than expected. Indexes Indexes are tools that allow producers to select for several EPDs at once, making selections more efficient than selecting on one trait at a time. Indexes weigh traits based on their importance to a producer’s bottom line by using a trait’s economic and genetic value. Indexes are a good way to put selection emphasis on traits that are economically relevant. Total maternal (TM): An index that combines growth and milk information as a prediction of the weaning weight performance of calves from a sire’s daughters. As an index, this value is not reported with an accompanying accuracy. A greater TM value means a mother that returns comparatively higher weaning weights on her calves. TM Index = MK EPD + ½ WW EPD.

Growth traits Birth weight (BW): Predicts the difference, in pounds, for birth weight of the calf. Weaning weight (WW): Predicts the difference, in pounds, for weaning weight (adjusted to age of dam and a standard 205 days of age). This is an indicator of growth from birth to weaning. Yearling weight (YW): Predicts the expected difference, in pounds, for yearling weight (adjusted to a standard 365 days of age). This is an indicator of growth from birth to yearling. *Mature weight EPD (MW): Predicts the average difference in pounds of mature weight of a sire’s progeny compared to their contemporaries.

$Cow: Represents the genetic value in dollars of profit of an animal when retained as a replacement female relative to other animals in the herd. A higher number represents more profitable genetics for maternal productivity. $Cow will serve producers in selecting bulls that will sire daughters with stayability and reproductive efficiency as well as other traits that lead to profitability in a production system, such as milk, calving ease, moderate mature weight and the ability of calves to gain. A female’s genetics also influence the performance of her calves in the feedlot and at slaughter, so traits such as feed efficiency and carcass value are also included in $Cow.

Carcass traits Yield grade (YG): Differences in yield grade score, which is a predictor of percent retail product. Smaller values suggest that progeny will have a better lean to fat ratio.

Efficiency profit index (EPI): An economic selection index developed to aid producers in selecting for more feed efficient cattle that still have acceptable amounts of gain. The EPI provides slight negative pressure on intake, while keeping gain at a constant value. By selecting on this index, producers will be able to find those animals that gain the same amount as their contemporaries while eating less.

Carcass weight (CW): Differences in pounds of hot carcass weight, adjusted to an industry standard age endpoint. Ribeye area (REA): Differences in ribeye area in inches between the 12th and 13th rib. Greater ribeye areas are preferable. Marbling (MB): Predicts the differences in the degree of marbling within the ribeye as expressed in marbling score units. Greater marbling numbers are preferable and are an indicator of higher carcass quality grades.

Feeder profit index (FPI): An economic selection index designed to aid producers in selecting sires whose progeny will perform in the feedlot and are sold on a grade and yield standpoint. Well ranking sires for FPI have higher marbling and carcass weight than their contemporaries. As a terminal index, little emphasis is put on maternal traits such as stayability and calving ease.
