Got Spirit? Del Dios Does!

Drago n s upon dragons began streaming into the courtyard to start off our very first pep rally at Del Dios, on August 29, 2013. There were four areas reserved for Water, Metal, Sky, and Fire. ASB members stood on stage and directed first, second, and third years to their house. As soon as all the kids were ready to go, Ms. Lopez got everyone excited and pumped up as they competed to be the loudest when they screamed the Dragon cheer. Water took the lead and earned 500 points for their house. Once the cheer was over, one faculty member from each house volunteered to do a special task. The houses all listened carefully as Ms. Lopez described what the teachers will have to do in order to win 500 points for their house!

Everyone was amused when she stated that the teacher volunteers had to dig through pie plates full of whipped cream and find gummy worms. No hands allowed. The drag-

There was a roar from the Water house and everyone congratulated Ms. Robson who won the competition for Water. To conclude the pep rally, ASB held another Dragon Cheer contest and Sky was victorious. As all the dragons walked to lunch they couldn’t stop talking about the fun filled first pep rally that took place at Del Dios Middle School. (to the right) Teacher representatives from each House were challenged to find and eat all the gummy worms in a whipped-cream pie. If you haven't guessed by looking at the picture, Ms. Robson dominated the extravaganza for Water House!!

It was a warm August evening as Del Dios parents filed into the Hall of Champions. “Welcome Del Dios Dragons!” Mrs. Adkins shouts. She explained how Del Dios Middle School raised their CST scores higher than any other middle school in Escondido, especially our science scores. In fact, we have the highest science scores in the entire state of California! After the half hour introduction to all of the Dragon parents, they went about to their dragon child's classes. Each parent followed

their child’s schedule and each teacher had ten minutes to introduce themselves, explain what will happen in the class, and what their son or daughter will learn. After each parent had a brief remembrance of what it was like in middle school, they packed into the Hall of Champions one by one where they gathered information about ads for the paper and yearbook, nutrition services, gear up, and counseling services. Finally, the education filled night was over and all parents left with information on how to help you become college and career ready.

Editor's Note

Creating this issue has been a bumpy, exciting, fun, and anticipating roller coaster.

The ride can be scary at times, but is worth it in the end because you have a great memory to hold on to, but in our case it's a fantastic new addition to Volume LII Spirit of the Dragon Newspaper.

The rest of the Journalism team is so amazing and I couldn't have done any of

this without them.

Many people don't realize how much hair-pulling, stress, and effort goes into the paper. With all of the interviewing, reporting, writing, picture taking, and putting the paper together, it takes up quite a lot of our time. Don't get me wrong, I couldn't be happier doing Journalism and I wouldn't trade it for anything. I hope you enjoyed the second issue of Spirit of the Dragon Newspaper.

Q: What are you looking forward to this year? A: “I’m looking forward to watching kids develop hopes and dreams in middle school.”

Q: What were you like in middle school? A: “I wasn’t very involved and didn’t step out of my comfort zone too often.”

International Dot Day September 15th marks the anniversary of the publication of "The Dot", written and illustrated by Peter Reynolds. "The Dot" is a story book for all ages.

Starting in 2009, a group of educators began celebrating this date as "International Dot Day", a day for classes to explore the story’s powerful themes: bravery, creativity, and self-expression.

“The Dot more than anything celebrates the power of creative teaching.” Reynolds explains. “Despite the test-centric world we live in, creative teachers know how to find those 'aha moments' much the same way that my 7th grade math teacher, Mr. Matson, ‘connected the dots’ between math and art, which changed my life.” To honor that moment, Reynolds dedicated The Dot to Mr. Matson.

The Dot tells the story of a caring teacher who reaches a reluctant student in a remarkably creative way. In Reynolds’ book, the teacher dares a very resistant Vashti to “make her mark.” Vashti’s breakthrough begins with a simple dot on a piece of paper. Encouraged by her teacher, she sets off on a journey of selfdiscovery, letting her creativity bloom and, ultimately, inspiring others.

Teacher Terry Shay believed so fully in the power of The Dot that he “made his mark” by declaring September 15th International Dot Day. He encouraged fellow teachers to read the book and then create their own dots. Dot Day caught on quickly. Since the first Dot Day in 2009, the numbers of participating educators and students around the globe have skyrocketed. More and more schools are

Alligator Scars A 300 Word Story by Sianna Cruz On a hot day in Florida, a young boy went swimming in the water hole behind his house. He took a flying leap off the dock, and dove into the cool water. He started making his way to the middle of the water. His mother, who was watching from the kitchen window, saw an alligator slip into the water and quietly move toward her son. She screamed at her son to come back. The boy was startled at her cries, but didn’t know that a gator was closing in on him. Fortunately, he started swimming toward shore. His mother ran down the dock and yanked her son out of the water. As the boy was freed from the water’s embrace the alligator leaped into the air and clamped its powerful jaws on the boy’s legs. The boy screamed in agony as the alligator and his mother both pulled on his body. A farmer who was driving by heard “Jesus, help us!”, pulled over, and killed the alligator.

The boy was rushed to the hospital and, miraculously, lived. Many months later, a reporter came to ask the boy about the incident. He asked, “Can I see the scars?” In reply the boy pulled up his pant legs and showed the reporter his vicious looking scars. The boy said excitedly,”I also got these great scars on my arms.” The reporter asked,”Where are those from?” The boy replied, “They’re from my mom because she just wouldn’t let go!”

Like the scars that were left on the boy’s legs from the alligator, we all have the scars of our past. And I believe, that like the mother who wouldn't let go, God won't let us go because he loves us.

9/11: A What College are You Attending?

September 11, 2001 was a day that changed America forever. September 11th, known as 9/11, was the day tragedy struck the U.S. It was a day full of sorrow and loss. 9/11 occurred with four coordinated terrorist attacks from the Islamic terrorist group, the al-Qaeda. The heart of the terrorist attack was in New York City. Four passenger airplanes were hijacked by 19 people in total from al-Qaeda. They killed several passengers and the captains in order to take control of the plane and crash in a suicidal attack. Two of the planes flew right into the twin towers with everything and everyone in them. The third plane crashed into the Pentagon which is the headquarters of the United States Department of Defense. The fourth plane’s target might of been Washington, D.C. yet crashed in a field near Shanksville, Pennsylvania after some brave passengers tried to overpower the hijackers.

Of course, total chaos was happening all over the country. Almost everyone had their eyes glued to the TV in shock, knowing they should look away, but couldn’t bring themselves to do so. In total, about 3,000 people died in the attack including the several unfortunate yet brave firefighters and the nineteen hijackers. But who led the terrorists?

Many suspicious eyes fell upon al-Qaeda and their leader Osama bin Ladin. Osama bin Ladin denied the accusal as would any other guilty terrorist leader. After bin Ladin finally confessed, he fled and evaded capture only to be found years later and killed

by U.S. forces in May 2011. There are still several and well deserved memorials honoring all of the people who died on 9/11.

You can watch many documentaries on TV about this horrid day, some more appropriate than others. 9/11 is now a remembrance day and will hopefully be for a very long time. Many people disagree with the fact that it is a remembrance day because it reminds them of the horrible things that happened on that day, but it is not about remembering the events that took place, it’s about remembering all of the brave and courageous people who died fighting.

A Note from Mrs. Peterson, Assistant Principal Mrs. Peterson, Assistant Principal Rethink the meaning of "on time."

People who are always on time are really people who arrive early every day--and acknowledge that things can go wrong to set them back several minutes.

When things do "go wrong" these students still arrive on time! So on time does not mean that you argue with your teacher that you were in the room when the bell rang. “On time” means that you are early, in your seat, and working when the bell rings.

Understand the importance of being on time. Students who are always on time are the people who earn the best grades, win scholarships, and get into great colleges. In the working world, the people who are always on time are the people who get promotions.

Get enough sleep. If you have trouble getting out of bed in the morning, then make a serious effort to get to bed earlier.

Give yourself a realistic amount of time to dress. You can do this with a simple exercise: Get up early one morning and time yourself (moving at a normal pace) to see how long it takes you to get ready. You may be surprised at the time it takes, especially if you find you have been trying to squeeze forty minutes worth of dressing and getting ready into fifteen minutes each morning.

Let every member of your family know that you must be at Del Dios by 7:30. All of your brothers, sisters, and parents or guardians need to hear it from you! Then they will know that it may be necessary to drop you off first.

My entire family, including my 2 year old daughter hears from me "Mommy has to leave by 6:30 each morning" and she repeats it and prepares to say bye to me at the door as I grab my purse.

Students who are tardy to period 1 will receive a phone call each time you are late and will receive a personal phone call at the 3rd tardy. The student will then be assigned to after school classes at the 4th tardy.

Students who are tardy to periods 27 will receive nutrition detention. If you are late to one class each day, you will give up nutrition each day. Get to each class on time.

First Assembly of the Year

The sound of Dragons roaring filled the Hall of Champions as the first Del Dios assembly began on August 22, 2013 . Ms. Lopez recited the Dragon chant and began a competition between the houses.

“Middle school, high school, college, career! Dragon success begins right here!” The houses screamed until their throats were hoarse from shouting. Ms. Lopez then introduced a second house competition, "Dragon Q and A".

Students from each Dragon house went on stage and were instructed to answer questions in order to receive points for their houses. The questions that needed to be answered were shown on a powerpoint. The Dragon house representatives had to press a buzzer and answer the question that was on the screen. If the question was answered correctly then they would points for their house. Water earned 100 points, Fire earned 0 points, Metal earned 100 points, and Sky earned 100 points.

Mrs. Adkins ended the competition and explained how important coming to school on time is, as well as knowing your GPA. Then, Mrs. Adkins introduced

Labor Day

Richard, a valedictorian from San Pasqual High School. He discussed how he went to Del Dios and finished high school with a 5.0 GPA. Impossible you say? Well, to achieve this you must take AP courses and get involved in clubs.

Extra-curricular activities are helpful as well. If you want to be a Del Dios star like Richard, than take his advice.

After Richard finished speaking, the AP’s and counselors began a

fashion show. The AP’s and counselors were the models, with Ms. Ayles as the host; the models displayed clothes that aren't allowed at Del Dios. The house representatives had to point out which article of clothing disobeyed dress code. When Mr. Ngo, Mrs. Peterson, Mrs Fiero, and Mr. Rodriguez each had a chance doing the catwalk, Mrs. Adkins concluded the first Dragon assembly at Del Dios Middle School year 2013-14.

How did you celebrate Labor Day? Chances are, you don’t even know anything about Labor Day. Labor Day is a holiday celebrated on the first Monday of September that honors the economic and social contributions of those who work in America. It was officially made a holiday in 1894 to please the unionists that were taking part in the Pullman Strike. The Pullman Strike took place in 1983 because of the 25% decrease in Pullman Palace Car Company employee wages. A few days after the Pullman Strike ended, President Grover Cleveland signed into law that officially made Labor Day a national holiday. Labor Day is publicly celebrated with a parade that shows the spirit and strength of the trade and labor organizations. It is then followed by a festival just for the workers and their families. While some take part in a grand parade to celebrate Labor Day, many just have a barbeque to end a great summer.

After the blow of a whistle, the Del Dios football team began flag football tryouts. Once the team ran a few laps, Coach Wagner started explaining the rules and regulations of football practice. “Our next practice will be on Tuesday, and right after the bell rings you have five minutes to get on the field!”, Coach Wagner stated.

After he told them other important information that they needed to know, they split into two teams and began to play some football.

There were many who were surprised by the ferocity of the tiny

first years that were playing on the field. When they had finished playing their exhilarating game of flag football, those who were tired left to go back to X-track while those who were wanting more stayed to play a game against second and third years. With determination and sweat on their faces, the second and third years players began an intense game of flag football. “Ready, set, hike!” and off they went scoring touchdowns and pulling flags. When the second and third years finished their game they left sweaty, exhausted, and full of eagerness for the upcoming season.

Teacher Walks Plank!

Last year on September 19, at Del Dios Middle School, there was a day when the whole school got to act like a pirate. It was, and still is, called International Talk Like a Pirate Day. Everyone loved it; especially the Water Dragons!

Almost the whole school was talking like a pirate. Mr. Jaquess, Mrs. Nohe, Mrs. Moon, and Mrs. Murphy, were even dressed as pirates!

They looked amazing!

Mrs. Nohe and Mrs. Murphy even took over DDTV. They barged in, pushed the ASB members aside, sat down, and started to talk about the day. Mrs.Nohe mentioned that she was

going to walk the plank after school.

Everyone was anticipated the moment to see Mrs. Nohe walk the plank. The bell rung, and sure enough, Mrs. Nohe walked the plank!

Everyone was amused as Mrs. Nohe dragged a plank of wood behind her. Just like how people walk their dog, Mrs. Nohe walked the plank!

Cameras and phones snapped photos as she passed by, walking the plank, on the much loved Pirate Day. So, how about it Dragons?
