THE HUB
WINTER / SPRING 2020 The Hub was designed with the idea that “you cannot be what you cannot see”. Serving as the main entrance to the newest CSU campus, the transit center sits as a handshake to the community: a place for is business owners, professionals, and students to work together, interact, and learn from each other. Flexibility in seating and program provides a space for collaboration and innovation, while fostering a sense of belonging for students.

THE COMMONS FALL 2020
The student hotel focuses on connection between the students, Florence, and the local community. Through shared community spaces, connection through art, food, and wine makes the student hotel an attraction for everyone. The Commons utilizes an active ground plane, with flexible use public spaces, large outdoor gaming areas, and an amphitheater. The flexible use space’s capacity for temporary installations allows it to create interactions between the city of Florence and the forte, while the outdoor activities it supports compliments the student areas.

LIFE-LONG PLAY AND LEARNING SPRING 2021
The synthesis of a fitness facility, library, and kindergarten creates the opportunity for a community hub in the city center of Florence. A new building typology enables unique and colorful interactions between the elderly and the children of Florence and supports the collective needs of the city. Both core populations, the kindergartners and the elderly, benefit through proximity. The combination of programs caters to not only life-long learning, but to life-long play.

CHILDREN’S PERFORMANCE SPACE // LIFE-LONG PLAY AND LEARNING is embodied in the children’s performance space. Both core populations benefit from this shared area. The elderly serve as teachers and mentors for the children, while the children energize and invigorate the seniors. Seniors can read to the children here and help them with their education and the children can play with, preform for, or read for the seniors. The room is flexible by design with moveable furniture that allows users of the space to customize the area for their needs.

KINDERGARTEN // NATURAL EDUCATION education spaces for the 21st century are a lot more active and dynamic than schools have traditionally been designed. Children’s development comes through movement, meaning that the concrete schoolyards, cramped classrooms, and fixed furniture of traditional schools is hindering children’s learning. Having spaces that embrace fidgeting, climbing, running, and play is crucial for learning environments. A diversity of spaces to accommodate individual, small group, and large group areas allows children to learn through socialization and discovery. Weaving in places for place allows the classroom to become a tool for teaching, and not an inhibitor.
THE POOL // PLAY is important for children because it promotes healthy development and critical thinking skills, but it’s also really important for adults as well. Play helps relieve stress, improve brain function, boost creativity, improve relationships with others, while helping people feel younger and more energetic.

VELLUM: ADAPTIVE REUSE FALL 2021
I tackled Vellum with the idea of repurposing an abondoned object for a surprising new use and creating handmade paper. I set out to turn a microscope into a desk lamp, utilizing the paper to create a lampshade to play with materialty, light, and shadow. The paper making process was intensive, with multiple types of scrap paper used to determine the best look and feel for the lampshade. After the scraps were turned into a pulp, they were pressed and allowed to dry. Different paper thicknesses and holes were created to allow different lighting scenarios. From there, the microscope was taken apart to allow for lighting wiring to run through it. After the wiring was sautered and in place, the microscope was put back together. Finally, the lampshade was fabricated using piano wire, with the paper wrapped around the edges to create an intiguing play with light.
Handmade paper after it dried, held up to the light. Attaching the wiring to the lightbulb socket.
