This book is one of the nine Corpus Vitrearum Medii Aevi (CVMA) volumes in which the medieval stained glass works of Saxony-Anhalt are compiled. It includes sites in the south of the federal state, excluding the cathedrals in Halberstadt and Naumburg. The glass works come from the period between the thirteenth and sixteenth century, and range from the early
Hadmersleben, former monastery church
grisailles in Schulpforte and a Tree of Jesse cycle in Merseburg to pre-Reformation, very colorful imports of stained glass from Nuremberg in Eisleben. They show how this art form borrowed at various times from the east and west, the north and south, and thus arrived at individual solutions. Cultural history across genres and epochs
Petrarch intensively examined the visual arts of his time. He possessed a Madonna painting by Giotto and commissioned Simone Martini to create the unique frontispiece of his codex on Vergil. His works are key texts with respect to the discovery of the landscape and humanistic villa culture as well as the female portrait and the triumphant iconography of the Renaissance and the Baroque. The myth of the poet-prince associated with Petrarch has continued to offer a productive projection screen for both literati and artists up to modern times.
The texts in the book open up new perspectives on central aspects of Petrarch’s life and work and his importance as a charismatic phenomenon in the history of European art in a dialogue between literary studies and art history. “Liveliness” is the dominant topos in the art and discourse on art of the early modern era. It is characterized by a paradox, since the works only seem to live. But what is also reflected in the fascination with almost living works at the same time is the impossibility of drawing rigid lines of demarcation between the living and the dead. The book examines the transitions between living and dead in case studies, for instance, based on early tombs, anatomical renderings, and sculptural monochromy as well as on the history of coloring, Vasari's teleology,
Michelangelo's non-finito, and Titian's portraits. What come into play are eroticism, monetary theory, the luster of eyes, and still-lifes, and also visual poetry, princely triumphal processions, and light and sculpture in the Baroque.

Major contribution to the history of scholarship in the seventeenth century
Filippo Baldinucci, a painter and proficient connoisseur of art, intensively examined the question of historiographical writing. With his monumental collection of biographies, Notizie de’ Professori del disegno (1681–1728), he distanced himself from biographical literature oriented toward Vasari’s Vite, and wrote a scholarly, well-founded European history of art adhering to encyclopedic standards with a source-critical and scholarly basis. A close reading of the Notizie shows that Baldinucci did not intend to provide a follow-up to the Vite: He

The aim of the research center is to systematically examine collectors, collections, and collecting cultures in Vienna and Central Europe and situate them within the larger history of art and culture. The underlying research questions include the presentation of objects in the rooms of collections and the motivations, purchase policies, acquisition strategies, and roles of the individuals involved, which besides the collectors themselves, also encompass artists, art dealers, and art historians. Artistic and aesthetic questions are thus directly linked with economic and sociohistorical aspects.

New insights on Hobbes and the role of “authorative” images
Horst Bredekamp’s subject is the surprising resonance of the image of the embodied state that dominates the frontispiece to Leviathan: the treatise on humanity in its “political” dimension published in 1651 by the English philosopher Thomas Hobbes. Opening with a succinct exposition of how intimately this image is related to some of the fundamental themes addressed by Hobbes, Bredekamp then rigorously pursues the art-historical question of the authorship of the title-page. In the central chapters, the frontispiece is assessed in relation
both to venerable visual and intellectual traditions and to some of the scientific innovations of the mid-17th century. The conclusion is devoted to the importance of several of the most far-reaching preoccupations of Hobbes as a profound and original thinker.

The thirty-nine maps in the atlas provide information about the genesis of the Earth and the interaction of the forces of nature as well as the cultural-historical development of geographic knowledge itself. Amrei Buchholz describes the conception and production of the atlas for the first time. She shows that Humboldt’s
