This book is one of the nine Corpus Vitrearum Medii Aevi (CVMA) volumes in which the medieval stained glass works of Saxony-Anhalt are compiled. It includes sites in the south of the federal state, excluding the cathedrals in Halberstadt and Naumburg. The glass works come from the period between the thirteenth and sixteenth century, and range from the early

grisailles in Schulpforte and a Tree of Jesse cycle in Merseburg to pre-Reformation, very colorful imports of stained glass from Nuremberg in Eisleben. They show how this art form borrowed at various times from the east and west, the north and south, and thus arrived at individual solutions. As usual, the volume captivates with its high-quality color and black-and-white

New research on visual and religious practices at the time of the Reformation

Interdisciplinary approaches to a barely examined topic

German and English texts by international experts

The anthology introduces readers to the barely examined field of research on private visual and religious prac tices at the time of the Reformation and thus shows spheres of the private in the interplay between the “personal” and the “communal,” the “internal” and the “externally visible,” and the “familial” and the “public.” The texts trace laypersons’ interest in forms and methods of personally appropriating and internalizing faith from the perspectives of various disciplines, with a particular focus on visual works. The book makes individual genres and

groups of works, for instance, illustrated religious literature or small-format, mobile religious works, the focus of research, and addresses them anew with respect to the question of innovative pictorial strategies for living out one’s faith personally.

First comparative examination of monumental animal bronzes in the Middle Ages

New perspectives on the social and historical relevance of monumental objects

Comprehensive object analyses and classifications within art and cultural history

The “lion of Saint Mark's” in Venice, the “Capitoline wolf” in Rome, or the “griffin” on the imperial palace in Goslar: Monumental animal bronzes dominated many medieval cities and palaces. Whether taken from antiquity, reworked, and partially altered, or cast anew, they represent ideal figures of identification for single individuals or social groups until today due to their size, positioning, and generally open meaning. The book takes a look for the first time at selected bronzes south and north of the Alps, their histories and modes of reception from

a comparative and interdisciplinary perspective. Joanna Olchawa, Goethe University, Frankfurt

The Annunciation: a specific event recounted in the Bible and often represented in artworks, but also the prototype of many other announcements throughout the history of Western culture. This volume proposes new readings of pictorial Annunciations from the Middle Ages and the Early Modern period – treating aspects such as witnesses, inscriptions and architecture – as well as analyses of some visual echoes, reenactments of the announcement to Mary in sacred and profane contexts up to the twenty-first century. Among the latter are included

Interdisciplinary research in a dialogue between literary studies and art history

The history of the reception of Petrarch in the interplay between texts and images

Cultural history across genres and epochs

Petrarch intensively examined the visual arts of his time. He possessed a Madonna painting by Giotto and commissioned Simone Martini to create the unique frontispiece of his codex on Vergil. His works are key texts with respect to the discovery of the landscape and humanistic villa culture as well as the female portrait and the triumphant iconography of the Renaissance and the Baroque. The myth of the poet-prince associated with Petrarch has continued to offer a productive projection screen for both literati and artists up to modern times.

The texts in the book open up new perspectives on central aspects of Petrarch’s life and work and his importance as a charismatic phenomenon in the history of European art in a dialogue between literary studies and art history. “Liveliness” is the dominant topos in the art and discourse on art of the early modern era. It is characterized by a paradox, since the works only seem to live. But what is also reflected in the fascination with almost living works at the same time is the impossibility of drawing rigid lines of demarcation between the living and the dead. The book examines the transitions between living and dead in case studies, for instance, based on early tombs, anatomical renderings, and sculptural monochromy as well as on the history of coloring, Vasari's teleology,

Michelangelo's non-finito, and Titian's portraits. What come into play are eroticism, monetary theory, the luster of eyes, and still-lifes, and also visual poetry, princely triumphal processions, and light and sculpture in the Baroque.

A first in-depth research work on the artist biographies of the Florentine scholar Filippo Baldinucci

New insights into artist biographies of the early modern era

Major contribution to the history of scholarship in the seventeenth century

Filippo Baldinucci, a painter and proficient connoisseur of art, intensively examined the question of historiographical writing. With his monumental collection of biographies, Notizie de’ Professori del disegno (1681–1728), he distanced himself from biographical literature oriented toward Vasari’s Vite, and wrote a scholarly, well-founded European history of art adhering to encyclopedic standards with a source-critical and scholarly basis. A close reading of the Notizie shows that Baldinucci did not intend to provide a follow-up to the Vite: He

finds harsh words for Vasari, and even though he shares his notion of the primacy of the arts, he leaves Vasari’s teleological model based on normative stipulations of a history of progress behind him. Isabell Franconi, Heinrich-Heine-Universitat, Düsseldorf

Research by the Vienna Center for the History of Collecting

Sammler, Sammlungen, Sammlungskulturen in Wien und Mitteleuropa

New Series

Ed. by Sebastian Schütze

The new series publishes anthologies and individual studies conducted by the research centre. The aim of the research center is to systematically examine collectors, collections, and collecting cultures in Vienna and Central Europe and situate them within the larger history of art and culture. The underlying research questions include the presentation of objects in the rooms of collections and the motivations, purchase policies, acquisition strategies, and roles of the individuals involved, which besides the collectors themselves, also encompass artists, art dealers, and art historians. Artistic and aesthetic questions are thus directly linked with economic and sociohistorical aspects.

Comprehensive analysis of the most famous frontispiece of the book history

New insights on Hobbes and the role of “authorative” images

Horst Bredekamp’s subject is the surprising resonance of the image of the embodied state that dominates the frontispiece to Leviathan: the treatise on humanity in its “political” dimension published in 1651 by the English philosopher Thomas Hobbes. Opening with a succinct exposition of how intimately this image is related to some of the fundamental themes addressed by Hobbes, Bredekamp then rigorously pursues the art-historical question of the authorship of the title-page. In the central chapters, the frontispiece is assessed in relation

both to venerable visual and intellectual traditions and to some of the scientific innovations of the mid-17th century. The conclusion is devoted to the importance of several of the most far-reaching preoccupations of Hobbes as a profound and original thinker.

New insights into the cartography of Alexander von Humboldt

Innovative research on topographical visual media around 1800

Plural visual mediums, virtual space, and the mediation of knowledge around 1800

After returning from his American research expedition, Alexander von Humboldt worked on an atlas of the “New Continent,” the Atlas géographique et physique des régions équinoxiales du Nouveau Continent. The thirty-nine maps in the atlas provide information about the genesis of the Earth and the interaction of the forces of nature as well as the cultural-historical development of geographic knowledge itself. Amrei Buchholz describes the conception and production of the atlas for the first time. She shows that Humboldt’s

presentation of knowledge, which has hitherto not been addressed by the research, is exemplary for the practice of mediating knowledge visually around 1800, in which heterogeneous types and topics of presentation were brought together heuristically. Amrei Buchholz, University of Hamburg

New research on the glass art and on color theory of the nineteenth and twentieth century

Transnational aspects of the phenomenon of color in glass art

German and French contributions

Exhibition Vitromusée Romont June 21st, 2020 to February 28th, 2021 American pattern of opalescent glass

The catalogue is dedicated to diverse aspects of the rediscovery of color in the glass art of the nineteenth and twentieth century. The influential color theories of Isaac Newton, Michel Eugène Chevreul, Owen Jones, or Johannes Itten, which created the theoretical basis, are addressed as well as methods for producing stained glass developed by artists such as Clement

Heaton, Charles Wasem, or Marcel Poncet, and Islamic art, which served as a source of inspiration. The examination of color and the expansion of the existing color palette in glass art are then presented based on works created within the context of the opalescent era in American stained glass, the Bauhaus, and the revival of Swiss stained glass by the St-Luc group.

Aesthetic experiences are basically inconceivable without specific objects. What consequences does this object-relatedness have for the nature of aesthetic experience? To what extent do aesthetic objects also determine how they are experienced? The texts in the book consider their topic on the one hand empirically through examining concrete aesthetic objects from art, popular culture, and religion, but on the other, also by means of historical and theoretical reflections. By examining new adjustments to theory such as post-humanism, actor-net-

work theory, object-oriented rational ontology, and speculative realism, conventional social-constructive explanatory models are transcended in favor of defining the aesthetic as a necessary interplay between object and experience. First comprehensive analysis of the two best-known visual representations of children in the Holocaust

Detailed examination of the reception history of both photographs

The photographs of the unknown Warsaw Ghetto little boy and the wellknown Anne Frank became famous documents worldwide, representing the Holocaust. Many artists adopted them as a source of inspiration to express their feelings and ideas about Holocaust events in general and to deal with the fate of these two victims in particular. Moreover, the artists emphasized the uniqueness of both children, but at the same time used their image to convey social and political messages. Because they represent different sexes, and different

aspects – Western and Eastern Jewry – of Holocaust experience, artists used them in many contexts. This book will complete the lack of comprehensive research referring to the visual representations of these children in artworks. Impressive archive of images and texts on the educational reforms, experiments, and upheavals of the 1960s and 70s

Interleaving of the history of education and architecture from a global perspective

Focus on social and pedagogical spaces as places for political action and thought

13

Bildungsschock (Education Shock) takes a look at the ramifications of the “Sputnik shock” of 1957. After the Soviet Union outmaneuvered the West with its unexpected success in the space race, education expanded on a global scale so as to cope with the “global educational crisis” in the postwar order. Under pressure from demographic and technological devel-

opments, social movements, and cultural changes, learning itself, but also spaces for learning were conceived and planned anew. In cooperation with artists, scholars, and architects, Tom Holert examines an era of reforms, experiments, and upheavals that current debates should rediscover as an archival resource. The richly illustrated volume accompanies the exhibition

New research on one of the most successful sculptors of today

Detailed analysis of a provocative group of works

Awarded the Paul Clemen Prize in 2019

Thomas Schütte’s Frauen (Women) reactivate the intensely debated field of the conventional female nude, which was largely regarded as anachronistic at the end of the twentieth century, in a monumental format and with perplexing figuration. The monograph approaches the group of works Frauen based on five areas of analysis, ranging from the production of the figures to the exhibiting of them in diverse contexts. It elucidates at what points, in what manifestations, and with what functions a principle of being kept in a state of flux becomes productive,

since this principle is what keeps the large, hundreds-of-kilos-heavy sculptures in motion and thus opens up questions with respect to the human, female figure and options for depicting it in monumental sculpture. Linda Walther, Bielefeld

Innovative linking of anthropological theory and analysis of a bi-medial œuvre

Intercultural aesthetics (Europe/China)

Henri Michaux in the context of the discourses on lines in the twentieth and twenty-first century

This study focuses on various scenes of calligraphy, practices and conceptualizations of lines, and questions of book aesthetics in Henri Michaux’s (1899–1984) pictorial, literary oeuvre. The theoretical horizon is provided by current approaches to knowledge of the body and motion, kinesthesia, habitus, body-memory, et al. in anthropology and the social sciences. In the twofold break with traditional functions of the graphic line and the notation function of text, the emphasis here is on writing as a body technique and performance as well as impro-

vised graphic records. An art of the motoric is nevertheless encountered in the form of books and generally combined with texts. Problems of approaching “Western” and Chinese (text) art are also discussed from a praxeological perspective. Sabine Mainberger, University of Bonn

Dis/simulation as a cultural technique

A critical examination of approaches to image studies by Hans Belting, Horst Bredekamp, Gottfried Boehm, Hans Dieter Huber, J.W.T. Michell, Thomas Macho, and many more

The present is an age of images. But what becomes of a culture in which only very few pictures are still made by hand, in which people no longer draw or paint, in which hardly anyone still works as a sculptor? And how does the individual’s power of imagination change when everything is made visible, everything is shown, and nothing is hidden anymore? The book outlines a perspective on studies of image culture based on the question of the mutual dependencies of image and art, which flow into our present in an “artification” of the world. The

book examines the influence of art images on exemplary image cultures in a period of time from the beginning of the concept of art in the fourteenth century up to the present. Christiane Kruse, Muthesius Kunsthochschule Kiel

New contributions for Image Science and Media Art Histories

Contributions of reknown internatial authors

At the beginning of the 21st century, new forms and dynamics of interplay are constituted at the interfaces of media, art and politics. Current challenges in society and ecology, like climate, surveillance, virtualization of the global financial markets, are characterized by hybrid and subtle technologies. They are ubiquitous, turn out to be increasingly complex and act invasively. New media art utilizes its broad range of expression in order to tackle the most urgent topics through multi-sensorial, participatory, and activist approaches. This volume shows

how media artists address, with a political lens, the core of these developments critically and productively. Oliver Grau, Danube University, Krems Inge Hinterwaldner, Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT)

Innovative discussion of the phenomenon of tourism and its risks

Artistic transmedia works on tourism and leisure pursuits

An artistic chronicle of travel as a foray

Text contributions by experts in the context of the Anthropocene debate

“The tourist destroys what he seeks by finding it.” (H.M. Enzensberger) In her artistic transmedia work, Catherine Ludwig investigates global phenomena of collective leisure pursuits and their effect on the Earth. Her oeuvre provides an insight into human rela tionships and the structures of power they are based on. Different epochs and (open) spaces are analyzed with a view to nature and public space; how is public space constituted and how is it experienced by us? What are the ideas of nature that become estab lished? And how do they form spaces

that have been opened up for the purpose of tourism? There is a longing for unadulterated nature, which is marketed in images, and yet, in reality, this has become very difficult to find. Because, in the Anthropocene age, almost everything has been opened up and exploited.

New approaches to artificial intelligence, cybernetics, and cryptoeconomics in the context of contemporary art

Alternative models of data mining, data indexing, data correlation, and historic analyses

The significance of knowledge in the twenty-first century as an expression of sense/sensuality, experiment, curiosity, and risk

As a reaction to the dominant effect and interpretive authority of the digital, Data Loam combines radical approaches based on positions taken in the international practice of con temporary art. Previously: insistence on indexicality and the instrumental reduction of knowledge. Instead: a new metric that requires play, curiosity, experiment, and risk. As an urgent response to the continually growing flood of information that libraries, search engines, and cultural institutions are exposed to, the authors develop approaches

that suggest and permit sensual logic, causal permeability, and new forms of man–machine interaction. Data Loam focuses on the future of knowledge systems in texts about artificial intelligence, cybernetics, and cryptoeconomics – as a means of counteracting end-of-the-world fears. An innovative discussion about collections and archives

Collecting, storing, archiving in theory and in practice

Statements from numerous international experts who curate and create collections

The book investigates the subject of collecting from a critical perspective that queries and expands on the ex isting ideas of museums and archives. The approach starts from voices that criticize the absence of items and associations in collections; it then progresses to the discussion of various new collecting strategies. The point is to take collecting seriously against a trend towards media impact-oriented exhibitions and an “economization” of collections: in order to think differently and afford it a long-term place with a view to de-

mocratization, facilitation, relationality, and immateriality. In addition to theoretical texts and artistic contributions, the publication comprises spotlight-type discussions: statements from experts who curate and create collections – and who critically engage with them. Rini Tandon’s work is characterized by a poetic cross-media approach: her oeuvre comprises works on paper, paintings, and sculptures, as well as photographs and videos. Fine Arts of the University of Baroda. The book takes the reader on a fascinating journey – from Rini Tandon’s early work, which already showed an affinity for sculptural expression, through to her post-minimalist geometric sculptures and her interventions in architectural and landscape space. As a result of her engagement with digital modernism she finally pro-

The two-dimensional drawing with plan layout, elevation, and section is a necessary prerequisite for all building. Perspectives help to give three-dimensional expression to the architect’s ideas. In order to convey architecture and to build it, drawings at a reduced scale are mandatory, for the architect as much as for tradesmen and clients.

This book recounts the historical development of architectural drawings and thus provides an insight into the fascinating world of this medium. It not only shows plain technical drawings but mainly focuses on impressive inventions of almost artistic quality that surprise again and again. It thus is a convincing appeal to constantly renew ways of drawing

architecture and thereby to imagine future worlds. Klaus Jan Philipp, Institute of Architectural History, University of Stuttgart
