Art For Benjamin

One Benjamin gets you one piece of Art. It’s so simple it took both Smith and Jones to think it up.

Aliza Tucker Statement | Set into diptychs, the first 16 prints of 40 Lashes were taken at the Turtle Back Inn in New Jersey on Yom Kippur, the Jewish Day of Atonement. Using only the contents of a tiny room, I spent 20 hours creating Instagram compositions and subsequently drawing them in 15-minute intervals. Each work of two images documents one hour of time spent in the hotel room. 40 Lashes is a study in finding beauty in the most quotidian and mundane of subject matter while challenging the viewer to look closer at their own everyday surroundings. Bio | Aliza Tucker creates art that confronts issues of articulation, authorship, and codification begot by the babble generated in a digital, networked society. She graduated from Rutgers University with concentrations in Psychology, Art and Music. Her work has been shown at the Raritan Valley Community College Annual Exhibition in New Jersey, CENTRAL BOOKING Art Space in New York City, and at Smith & Jones in Brooklyn. She spends her time commuting back and forth between Brooklyn and New Jersey, a practice sometimes heralded as "figuring out what the hell she's doing".

Blake Sandberg Statement | What are you looking at? What does it mean? How do words come to signify things? How do images and words communicate ideas? I believe visual art is a communication medium. Using imagery and text I communicate my ideas, experiment with meanings, ask questions, and create new representations. These works are a cross-section of what I have been doing in my studio over the last year. Some are working drawings for larger paintings, some are finished drawings or small paintings on paper. Bio | Blake Sandberg has shown a remarkable interest in art since he was a child, painting and drawing almost constantly. His parents supported his artistic habits, allowing him to turn their laundry room into a studio. While a teenager he attended the San Antonio Art Institute founded by Linda Pace and then The University of Texas at Austin. There Blake studied with Peter Saul and Michael Ray Charles. In 1997 Blake moved to the East Village and began showing in New York. His works have been seen alongside Andy Warhol, Willem de Kooning, George Condo, Christo, Philip Guston, Keith Haring, and Dali.

Carlos Pileggi Statement | My work contemplates notions of the everyday, the struggle for success, and what becomes valuable in life. The daily bombardment of information leads me to draw profusely. I translate this overwhelming amount of information into works that show a rugged visual language resonant with the aesthetics explored by punk fanzines. By appropriating this visual language, and the fanzine DIY marginal network, I push my body of work outside the art space. It is in the now that I find inspiration. Bio | Carlos Pileggi develops his artistic practice wherever he is, and in S達o Paulo city, where he was born on November 3rd 1973. In 2004, he attended the printshop at Lasar Segall Museum. From 2004 to 2007, he attended the open printshop at SESC Pompeia - SP, under the coordination and tutoring of Brazilian artist Evandro Carlos Jardim. In 2013, he got his Master of Fine Arts in studio Art at Maine College of Art (Portland-Maine). He is currently based in Brooklyn NY, for a 6-month residency at the New York Art Residency and Studios (NARS) Foundation.

Diana Teeter Statement | My work is about having fun. A few years ago I decided that my creative energies should always be spent by just simply enjoying the act of making art. I want to make art that people want to live with, that makes people feel. The magic for me is when I match a painting with the perfect person, somebody who just lights up when they see what I have done. My work has very broad themes, I paint what I feel like painting. My creativity is influenced by illustrations, old masterworks, tattoo art and photography. Bio | Diana Teeter is an artist who lives and works in Queens, New York. She has a MFA from Pratt Institute and completed her BFA at the College for Creative Studies in Detroit. Her work has been part of many group and solo shows in New York, across the East Coast and the Midwest. When not creating she can be found spending time with her husband, her friends and her cats.

Eryk Wenziak Statement | Over the past couple of years, my poetry work has moved towards visual and concrete poetry, with most of my visual poetry being done by hand with pencils, stencils, acrylics, etc., and my concrete poetry being done via a manual typewriter. Having a love for "white space" and minimalist artists like Dan Flavin and Carl Andre, I find that the typewriter allows me to create geometric shapes in perfect order and, in turn, these shapes are used to express what words cannot. Bio | Eryk Wenziak is Editor-in-Chief of rIgor mort.US, art editor at A-minor Magazine, and art director at A-minor Press. His poetry has appeared in numerous journals, including elimae, Used Furniture Review, HOUSEFIRE, Connotation Press, Psychic Meatloaf, and Short, Fast, and Deadly. He has published four chapbooks: 4am, a visual poetry collection published by No Press (Canada); 1975, an experimental poem published by Deadly Chaps (US) which was nominated for a Pushcart Prize; Status Programs | Some Rules For Us To Break, a collaborative writing effort which utilizes Facebook to generate the output of poetry; You are my anti-spam hero, a collection of spam-email subject headings published by Twenty-four Hours Press (US) and also nominated for a Pushcart Prize.

Smith&Jones Joseph A. W. Quintela Statement | For 6 years my practice has spanned the mediums of poetry, performance, and visual art with one unifying concern: the exploration of materiality. Through rigorous investigation of the material used in any creative process, I engage questions of identity, mortality, regeneration, and technology set against a backdrop of the systemic collapses occurring in contemporary society. The Details series marks my first foray into photography with carefully composed, un-cropped close-ups taken of my often chaotic sculptural investigations of materials including LED lights, salt, adhesives and acrylics. The series obfuscates the conventions of landscape and portraiture by creating compositions that could be simultaneously interpreted as alien worlds or renderings of the body’s interior. Bio | Joseph A. W. Quintela is a poet, artist, publisher, and art-organizer working at the fault lines emergent in the face of post-textual and post-productive modes of living. With a particular interest in material excess, systemic collapse, and generative revitalization, his practice harnesses a fluency in a variety of media including paint, light, books, text, and culinary ingredients. Solo exhibitions in New York have included Portrait of the Cast of You in Eye (Dumbo Sky, 2013) and FOOT | KNOTS (Project Space Envelope, 2012). He has organized exhibitions for Undercurrent Projects (Books Without Words, 2014), Terrazzo Art Projects (Se Cayo Todo, 2014), and the Brooklyn-based Pop-Up show initiative Smith&Jones. Ongoing displays of his work are housed at The Strand, Central Booking (LES), and Salina’s Restaurant (Chelsea).

Smith&Jones Prudence Groube Statement | Imagining other worlds often leads to imagining things much larger than ourselves, but what about the complex and vast universes of the things so minute they remain out of our realm of vision? Microscopic things are the very things that are often times holding us together- cells, atoms, electrons. Without them we would not be as we are, could not see as we do. Look into the small abyss to make sense of the larger one we are about to walk into. Bio | Australian born artist Prudence Groube’s world of MIMACHAN inhabits the space between the seen and unseen inviting the viewer to view through the candy colored lens of a pop culture drifter. The world of MIMACHAN does not have to make sense. There is no earth, no sky no boundaries. In this place a new language, a new way of being becomes possible. Concerned with how language, self, and social identities are influenced as information and connectivity flourish and identities are increasingly digitized, MIMACHAN asks: "In a world whose borders are dissolving how do we find meaning when we have no shape left?" Prudence’s work is in private collections both domestically and internationally. She has shown in Brooklyn, Manhattan, and Miami in both solo and group shows. She is the founder and curator of COLLECTnyc - dedicated to the support and continuing education of emerging artists, creating events and programs that allow artists to interact with the community whom they seek to serve through their cultural contribution. Samm Cohen Statement | The autumn branches hang, dwindling low, as leaves grow thick, weighty and scatter to the ground. Glass bottles hold what's left of prized grape spirits after they pour out of delicate lips. Gentle fleeting moments leave only traces of purpose. This series of acrylic on styrofoam monoprints was done on pages from the book Collecting Decanters by Jane Hollingworth. The text of the Mayflower Book sets a differentiated sophisticated background to curved carved lines of untamed nature atop, two seemingly unrelated things that may have a relation, as everything does. Bio | Samm Cohen, born in New York, began making intense, passionate artwork before she could write. With painting and photography from a young age and the influence of the study of psychology, her voice has been growing for over 30 years in multiple mediums; whatever feels right and seems pertinent to the message being aesthetically conveyed. The raw and honest quality of the work demonstrates devotion to her art. Samm has shown in over 30 various art exhibitions, (both solo and group), and has published/interviewed in a number of different journals.
