The Weld Trust OUTSTANDING FOUNDATION

Created in 2019, The Weld Trust is dedicated to promoting excellence in health and education in Weld County. Known for being proactive, open, honest, and emerging from the community, The Weld Trust’s key funding areas are housing stability, access to resources, childhood literacy, food insecurity, behavioral health, workforce development and healthy habits. Since it was established in 2019, The Weld Trust has awarded over $45M in grants to over 100 organizations and schools, including nearly $13M in 2022 alone. During the COVID-19 pandemic, The Weld Trust funded $475,000 in emergency grants to meet urgent needs. Other recent grants have included $1.5 million to Boys & Girls Club for a new Teen Center in Greeley. The Weld Trust also provided funding for 26,000 meals supporting nearly 1,000 children. “They are a funder, but also a convener, pulling stakeholders to the table when a key decision needs to be made that will impact the community for generations to come.” - Melanie Woodman, President & CEO of United Way Weld County

Abel Wurmnest

OUTSTANDING PROFESSIONAL GRANTMAKER Abel Wurmnest has successfully carried out the Anschutz family legacy over the last decade. He joined the Anschutz Family Foundation in 2011 as a program officer and was promoted to executive director in 2017. In his role as executive director, Abel works with the Foundation’s nonprofit partners to understand and champion their work, in addition to providing leadership for many of the Foundation’s initiatives. Abel lives by the mantra, “When everyone is included, no one is excluded.” Growing up in rural Illinois, Abel has a special connection with the people in rural Colorado and is a strong advocate for these communities. His passion for this work is reflected by the integral role he has played in giving nearly $30 million to nonprofits throughout the state, with a majority to organizations in rural Colorado. “Since joining the Anschutz Family Foundation, Abel has empowered nonprofits across Colorado, putting in the time to build relationships based on trust, honesty and consensus. His commitment to all corners of the state is evident by his windshield time, being the boots on the ground and learning from community leaders.” - Alejandra Major, former Program Officer at Adolph Coors Foundation

Community Shares of Colorado INSPIRATION

Since 1986, Community Shares has existed as a place for nonprofit organizations that did not fit the mold of traditional workplace giving programs. This included grassroots organizations dedicated to social justice, respect for all individuals, environmental conservation, and community-owned arts. Today, Community Shares partners with member nonprofits to build capacity, generate revenue through workplace giving and provide professional development. Community Shares catalyzes community participation, education, volunteerism, and philanthropy across the state by creating relationships with member nonprofit organizations. To date, Community Shares has distributed over $48 million to Colorado nonprofits. In addition, the organization provides members with professional development, increased visibility, and grant opportunities. Recently, Community Shares was selected to administer the Nonprofit Infrastructure Grant Program in partnership with Colorado Department of Local Affairs (DOLA). Through this work, Community Shares will provide grants to small nonprofits with budgets between $150,000 and $2 million who have been disproportionately impacted by COOVID in Dolores, El Paso, La Plata, Mesa, Montezuma, San Juan, Teller, and Weld Counties. “Community Shares’ commitment, passion and determination to creating a more equitable society is commendable. Their innovative programs and initiatives have contributed significantly to fostering social justice, diversity, and inclusion.” - Amy Farnan, Director of Development of the National Foundation to End Child Abuse and Neglect

Molson Coors Beverage Company OUTSTANDING LARGE BUSINESS

Molson Coors is celebrating 150 years as a pillar of the Golden, Colorado community. In celebration of this anniversary, Molson Coors has committed to investing $150,000 within the city throughout 2023. These donations primarily support historic community organizations such as the Golden Visitors Center, which serves not only as a gateway to the town but as a gathering place for residents. Inclusion is a pillar of Molson Coors’ community engagement and philanthropy as evidenced by Project Justice. As part of this program, Molson Coors offers completion grants to address the unmet financial need that remains a significant barrier to degree completion for many low-income students and students of color. This is a particular challenge for students in their final year of college when savings may be exhausted, and traditional need-based financial aid is insufficient. Beginning in 2022, Molson Coors invested $500,000 in completion grants to 22 institutions across its U.S. corporate hometowns. In Denver, these grants benefited the Denver Scholarship Foundation and Emily Griffith Technical College. “Molson Coors believes in community because it’s the right thing to do.” - Justin Davis, Denver Metro Chamber of Commerce and Denver Metro Chamber Leadership Foundation

Urban Ventures, LLC OUTSTANDING SMALL BUSINESS

Urban Ventures is a Denver-based real estate company that prioritizes a community-centered approach rooted in the context of social, environmental, and economic viability. The company’s projects focus on healthy places, resilient communities, affordable housing and adaptive reuse. Urban Ventures work includes redevelopment of a 17.5-acre former convent property in northwest Denver into a model mixed-income and multigenerational neighborhood called Aria. In partnership with Perry Rose, LLC, Urban Ventures donated a 9,000 square foot building and land on the Aria campus to Warren Village. The $1.6 million real estate donation houses the organization’s First Step program – a transitional housing program for teen moms and their children working toward their high school diploma. “Urban Ventures’ projects reflect a deep commitment to building environmentally and socially responsible communities that positively impact our city.” - Maria Simon, Architect with Shears Adkins Rockmore

Carol and George Solich OUTSTANDING PHILANTHROPISTS

Carol and George Solich founded The Solich Fund and have invested millions in education and healthcare, focusing their generosity and influence to benefit kids and young adults, as well as to advancing research that benefits all of humanity. In 2022, The Solich Fund pledged a historic $15 million investment in Children’s Hospital Colorado to address the youth mental health crisis. The Soliches also started the Solich Scholars program which grants merit-based and hybrid merit-and-need-based scholarships to incoming students at CU Boulder’s Leeds School of Business. On top of that, they created the Solich Caddie and Leadership Academy which creates opportunities for young people to develop leadership skills and enhance character through a foundation built around caddying. “I have known the Soliches for almost 25 years and have seen firsthand their positive impact on the Denver community. Carol and George bring so much more than money to the table; they bring passion and a ‘must succeed’ attitude to all the causes they have chosen to support.” - Scott Reiman, Hexagon Investments Chairman & CEO and longtime Children’s Hospital Colorado supporter

Colorado Elks Association OUTSTANDING SERVICE ORGANIZATION

Colorado Elks Association supports youth, veterans and communities, creating lasting impact in the communities in which they serve. In 1950, the Elks adopted Laradon, a school for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. A year later, the Elks purchased an abandoned Globeville-neighborhood school and gifted it to Laradon as its permanent home. To this day, the Elks continue to support Laradon. Since 1950, they have given a total of $5 million, furnished a new youth center in 2019, provided funding to furnish a transitional home for kids and teens in 2023, and volunteered to staff many Laradon events. “The Elks have consistently demonstrated a commitment to excellence and innovation in their approach to helping more than 500 kids and adults at Laradon.” - Brian O’Neil, Senior VP Private Wealth at US Bank

The Elks also support organizations like the Colorado Elks Association Youth Camp for kids who would not otherwise go to camp. Through the Clem Audin Fund, they provide kids 19 and under up to $250 for clothing, school supplies, registration fees, etc., and up to $350 per year for medical needs. Their members also volunteer at the VA hospital and work to eradicate homelessness among veterans.

As a result, she was recognized by Feeding America as a national fundraising leader in the food banking sector. “From my first meeting of Jennifer, I knew we were fortunate to have her in the Feeding America Network. Bryce Hunter OUTSTANDING YOUTH

Bryce Hunter, a Junior at Cherry Creek Elevation High School, has a 4.0 GPA and is a student-athlete on the swim team. He credits his busy schedule as one of the ways that he manages ADHD, a diagnosis he’s struggled with since childhood. Bryce has initiated and led two impactful service projects. CyberLeaders, a program designed to teach coding to and mentor fourth graders at Holm Elementary School in Denver. As a Title I school, 70 percent of students are English Second Language Learners. Bryce developed the coding class to inspire these kids and has worked with 60+ students. As a result, these students have increased math scores and administrators report a drop in absences. Bryce also founded the Can Campaign. Through this initiative, he collects pop-top canned goods for those experiencing food insecurity. Bryce believes one person CAN make a difference in the community. Bryce partners with organizations like Christ in the City and Second Change and is currently working on an app to show locations where free canned food stations are located. “This fall Denver Public Schools will be requiring teachers to teach coding one hour a week. When Bryce heard this and saw the looks on our faces as faculty having to learn and do this, he immediately said, ‘Don’t worry. I can train you all. We got this!’ He then got very excited. ‘This is so great! Now our students will know even more and we can take them even further!’ His response encapsulates Bryce in a nutshell: enthusiastic, inspired, hopeful, invested.” - Meaghan Elliott, Holm Elementary School teacher advisor for Cyber Leaders

J. Robert Young LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT

Growing up in Kansas, J. Robert Young embraced community service from a young age. Bob has donated more than $57 million to Colorado nonprofits representing arts and culture, civic and community, health and human services, and education and youth. The core principle of his personal and professional life is engagement with communities. Bob is the founder of Colorado’s Alpine Bank, which is celebrating 50 years in 2023. Bob served as Chairman of the State Banking Board from 1988 – 2007. He also founded and remains a member of the Colorado Independent Bankers Association and served as chairman and president of the Colorado Bankers Association and director of the American Bankers Association. He was inducted into the Colorado Business Hall of Fame in 2011. With his characteristic vision, he actively pursued and created the LatinoHispanic Scholarship in 1996 in partnership with Colorado Mountain College (CMC), which now has a department that grew out of the need to steward and care for the unique needs of first-generation students of higher learning. This proved to be transformational for more than 300 individuals over the past 27 years. The scholarship was renamed at the 25-year mark to the First-Generation Scholarship and is now available across Colorado. “His commitment to community investment, volunteerism, equity and inclusion have made Alpine the $6.4 billion organization that it is today. And his individual philanthropy, mentoring, and volunteerism have had an enduring and sustainable impact in rural Colorado and elsewhere in the state.” - William J. Hybl, Chairman of the El Pomar Foundation
