BLACK LIVES MATTER
Cover Made by Caroline Goodsell
OVERVIEW + MESSAGE Dear GlobalGirls and fellow readers,
Dear GlobalGirls is a monthly digital magazine dedicated to educate, inspire, and empower young girls around the globe. Our mission is to empower girls through educating them on current events and social issues,
highlighting
young
girls
who
show
leadership
in
their
communities,
and
overall
creating
a
welcoming and resourceful community. Founded by two Generation Z high school students from New York City, we strive to encourage girls to speak out for themselves leading them to become the next leaders of our generation.
For the first issue, part of the magazine is dedicated to the Black Lives Matter movement. Dear Global Girls continues to be an ally of the BLM movement and has strong hopes for the next generation to continue the fight to end systemic racism. Since America has been colonized, African-Americans have endured and received extreme racial injustice. As allies for this movement, we must educate the young to fight for racial justice, and those who are silenced due to the serious oppression faced by members of our society. In terms of educating others, we believe in teaching the importance of standing up against people of authority. From George Floyd, to Eric Garner, Breonna Taylor, Elijah McClain, Ahmaud Arbery, Emerald Black, and many others, Dear GlobalGirls stands with you. We are the next generation to end fight of this ongoing racial oppression.
We also acknowledge the importance of the worldwide pandemic, COVID-19 and the need to educate our audience, especially those who are younger. This deadly foreign disease arrived in early 2020, causing unprecedented fear among civilians around the globe. With states and countries reopening, cases and unemployment rates are rising, demonstrating how this disease is still hitting hard in many areas. At Dear GlobalGirls, we have utilized both informational and opinionated articles on COVID-19 in the magazine to provide scientific information, and also to share different viewpoints on the worldwide pandemic and the many effects it will have on society.
Sincerely, Sandra and Talia (founders)

I'M SORRY I'M BLACK POEM BY CHAKRIKA BOYALLA
If you weren’t holding a toy gun, you’d be alive. If you weren’t jogging, you’d be alive. If you weren’t black, you’d be alive. “I can’t breathe.” He can’t breathe and he won’t breathe Because he’s black, Because the color of his skin determines his worth, The human species came from one yet all they can do is separate. “I’m sorry you feel threatened.” “I’m sorry for replying, officer.” “I’m sorry that I thought color didn’t matter.” “I’m sorry I’m black.”
