Dear Reader, If you have picked up this magazine, you are probably searching for answers and guidance related to the autism journey. The mission of St. Johns Magazine’s AUTISM RESOURCE GUIDE is to help local families navigate the complex world of Autism resources available in Jacksonville, St. Augustine & St. Johns. In addition to being the Publisher of St. Johns Magazine, I am also the mother of a child with Autism. The past fourteen years have been a challenging journey and along the way I have learned a lot. The day I was told my son Jake had Autism, a debilitating disease without a known cause or definitive known treatments, I was devastated and scared. Jake was two at the time and it has lead our entire family down a kind of rabbit hole of alternative treatments including, biomedical interventions, neurologists, applied-behavior-analysis, play therapy and a host of other phantom treatments to no avail. Having a child with special needs is not only filled with challenges regarding health and therapy needs but has affected our family’s social interactions. People often do not realize Jake has a disability because on the outside he looks like any fourteenyear-old. When he picks up food off the ground and sticks it in his mouth, has a tantrum at the grocery store, or stares blankly when a well-intentioned stranger asks him to stop hugging them, I find myself offering, “I’m sorry, he has Autism”. Years ago most people did not know a thing about Autism, but thankfully times are changing and awareness is better than ever thanks to grassroots efforts in our communities. Hopefully, this resource magazine is a way to connect families dealing with autism to the resources that will help them along their journey.

Northeast Florida Autism Resource Guide

FACTS An estimated 1 in 68 (14.6 per 1,000) school-aged children have been identified with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), according to a CDC report

4.5 times more common among boys than among girls. The total costs per year for children with ASD in the United States were estimated to be

between $11.5 billion – $60.9 billion (2011 US dollars). This significant economic burden represents a variety of direct and in-direct costs, from medical care to special education to lost parental productivity.

Children and adolescents with ASD had average medical expenditures that exceeded

those without ASD by $4,110–$6,200 per year. On average, medical expenditures for children and adolescents with ASD were 4.1–6.2 times greater than for those without ASD. Differences in median expenditures ranged from $2,240 to $3,360 per year with median expenditures 8.4–9.5 times greater. [

In addition to medical costs, intensive behavioral interventions for children with ASD cost $40,000 to $60,000 per child per year

Getting a Diagnosis Developmental Pediatricians (doctors who have special training in child development and children with special needs) Child Neurologists (doctors who work on the brain, spine, and nerves) Child Psychologists or Psychiatrists (doctors who know about the human mind)

Therapies that Work for

Autism

A Therapist’s Story of Her Own Daughter’s Journey

By Stephanie Vavilala Owner of Therapeutic Butterfly Effects in Palencia November 14, 2014 is a date that changed the direction of my life forever. This was the date I received the autism diagnosis for my 2-year-old daughter, Sabita. I was like, “what do I do now?” as I don’t know anything about autism. As I dove in head first, I spent the entire day researching what to do and as equally important, what NOT to do. As a mother I wanted to do everything humanly possible for my daughter to provide her with the best chance for success. Doing the research, I quickly became overwhelmed as I found out there are a myriad of options available in many different areas such as mental health (play therapy, parent-child interactional therapy, animal–assisted therapy and social skills training) and behavioral (applied behavioral analysis (ABA) and floortime). Fast forward 4 years later and I’m happy to say that I’ve found the perfect combination of treatment for my daughter! I had to try everything as every child responds differently to treatment. I’m happy to share what has worked for her in hopes it may be of help for another child on the autism spectrum. I’ve seen the power of them from the standpoint of being a professional who has provided them (I’m a licensed mental health counselor and board certified behavior analyst) as well as a mother who’s daughter has received them. First, I’d like to discuss play therapy. Play therapy utilizes a child’s natural language (play) through their words (toys). It helps children learn more adaptive behaviors when there are emotional or social skills deficits. It is natural and enjoyable. It’s also perfect for children who are non-verbal as words are not necessary to gain therapeutic benefits. Second, animal-assisted therapy is a great option for kids who love animals. Animal-assisted therapy uses a dog or horse as a co-therapist. Children are naturally drawn to animals and are typically more relaxed and comfortable around them. Animals have a way of reaching a child that we as humans sometimes can’t. This treatment is another great one for children who are non-verbal as

6

they can totally relate to animals who don’t “talk” either. Lastly, applied behavioral analysis (ABA) is one of the most researched as well as one of the most controversial treatments. Before I had my daughter start I had heard so many things about ABA both good and bad so I was a little apprehensive about it since I didn’t know much about it from direct experience. I decided to give it a shot and see for myself. I also wanted to know everything about it so I went back to school and basically got a 2nd master’s degree, completed 3 years of supervised experience, and passed the exam to become a board certified behavior analyst (BCBA). Now, I’m very skilled in not only understand how it is effective but also being about to provide it to my daughter and my clients. I am the owner of Therapeutic Butterfly Effects (www.therapeuticbutterflyeffects.com), offering all of the approaches above- play therapy, animal-assisted therapy (canine and equine), and applied behavioral analysis. I have a large team of mental health counselors and behavioral therapist who are able to provide these treatments that I know are effective for children on the autism spectrum. I have started a nonprofit called Sabita Speaks (www.sabitaspeaks.org) which provides ipads, communication systems, and training for children without a voice. We are looking for sponsors for the organizations as well as children who are in need of this service. Please visit our website for more information as well as to get involved or nominate a child. Pediatric Dentistry by Dr. Ivis Alvarez, DDS Safari of Smiles

At Dr. Alvarez’s Pediatric Dental Practice, children feel like they have embarked on a safari adventure. Dr. Alvarez has created a child-friendly environment complete with a playroom, jungle animals and wall murals that provide you and your family with an enjoyable experience. Dr. Alvarez and her staff develop one-on-one relationships with patients and their parents. They provide the highest quality of individual care and communication that is not possible in some practices. Dr. Alvarez offers state-of-the-art treatments to satisfy each child’s comprehensive dental needs. The worries of apprehensive patients are eliminated by carefully chosen behavior management techniques. She designs preventive dental care programs that meet the individual needs and expectations of each patient and family. Dr. Alvarez and her staff are continually updating their skills and product knowledge as it is an important part of their commitment to their patients. They frequently

10

attend continuing education courses about the latest techniques and work with the best and most suitable products and materials. Education is an important aspect of the care Dr. Alvarez provides to her young patients and their parents. Tooth decay is the single most common chronic childhood disease, yet 90 percent of all tooth decay is preventable. The Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends that parents schedule their child’s first visit to a dentist between six months and one year, thus establishing a dental home early on for the child. When Dr. Alvarez sees children that young, she can educate their parents on proper oral hygiene techniques as well as good dietary habits that can help prevent tooth decay. Those early visits can establish a child’s attitude about their dentist for life, so she works to make the situation warm, friendly, and fun. A positive experience at a young age makes patients less fearful and can have lasting benefits for their oral health.

Dr. Alvarez was born in Miami, Florida; however, her family is from Cuba. She received her B.S. degree in Microbiology and Immunology from the University of Miami in 1991, and her dental degree from the University of Florida in 1995. Dr. Alvarez received her certificate in Pediatric Dentistry in May 1997 from the Medical College of Georgia. Upon completion of her certificate, Dr. Alvarez moved to the rural valleys of Las Matas, Dominican Republic for six months to set up a non-profit dental clinic. Funded entirely by donations, her organization, Instruments of Peace, employed a Dominican dentist in an office with two dental chairs, a generator, water distillers and an autoclave. Instruments of Peace continued to provide care for the children of Las Matas for ten years. In November of 1997, Dr. Alvarez moved to Jacksonville and practiced pediatric dentistry in several local offic-

Sometimes the only way to connect is through the internet. Here is a list of our favorite blogs and facebooks pages to help you feel connected to others who are experiencing the same things.
