mandarinmagazine.com Greetings! We are pleased to bring you the first issue of Mandarin Life & Style Magazine! Our first cover portrays the cast of the local hit Swamp Radio, a live show that depicts life on the first coast today and in the past. The stories strive to capture an identity that is complex. Like the characters in Swamp Radio, Mandarin is also complex. A little bit modern, a little bit old school. Although it has grown over the years, the area retains an historic southern charm that makes it unique among our suburbs. Mandarin Life & Style hopes to celebrate Mandarin, its people and events. In each issue we will connect you with local businesses, happenings and articles written by local people. The concept is hyper-local: In our information-overloaded world, we take it down to the community level by gearing our magazine to Mandarin-only zip codes including 32223, 32257 and 32258. It is provided free to you. The cost of producing, printing and mailing each issue is covered by our advertising partners. In addition to our print edition, MandarinMagazine.com will provide a digital edition as well as an online resource guide that mirrors the magazine. Just like our advertisers we are a locally owned small business. A typical issue will include an events calendar, positive-focused lifestyle articles, restaurant reviews and more. We welcome articles, photographs, recipes, travel stories, restaurant reviews and calendar items submitted by local people living in our distribution area. I look forward to connecting with you each month. Sincerely, Debbie Gaylord Publisher

DISCOVER MANDARIN’S HISTORY by Jennifer Yarbrough

William Webb House at Walter Jones Park, Mandarin

Mandarin, Florida, a suburb of Jacksonville located just off of busy I-295, filled with subdivisions and strip malls, is also full of history. It’s that history that whispers to us like the wind through the moss-covered oaks when we visit Walter Jones Park or the Old Post Office, both preserved and cared for by the Mandarin Historical Society. The starting point in discovering the history of our area is the beautiful Mandarin Museum located at Walter Jones Park and open every Saturday from 9am-4pm. The Museum contains informative displays of the history of Mandarin, including information about one of Mandarin’s most famous residents, Mrs. Harriet Beecher Stowe, author of “Uncle Tom’s Cabin.” The Museum also contains a collection of artifacts from the Civil War-era ship, The Maple Leaf,” which was sunk in the St. Johns River in 1864 and uncovered in the 1980s by local dentist, Dr. Keith Holland and his team. The Museum will host “Meet the Maple Leaf Divers” on May 9 and May 31 from 12-4pm. The History isn’t solely contained to the Museum, just to the north of it you will find the “Mandarin Schoolhouse,” which was used to educate freed slaves during Recon-

struction as part of the mission established by the Sisters of St. Joseph. The Historical Society is currently raising funds to preserve the schoolhouse and install exhibits to detail its historical significance. Take a stroll down paved paths at Walter Jones Park where the Mandarin Museum is located and you will find a restored 1875 farmhouse and an 1876 barn. These buildings show what life was like when Major William Webb owned the property in the late 1800s and are an example of a typical Mandarin homestead of the era. The Jones family owned the property from 1900-1992. Walter Jones ran the Old Store located at 12471 Mandarin Road and was the Post Master at the Mandarin Post Office, located in a side room of the store. The Post Office and store were closed in 1964, but have since been restored and are open to the public for tours and events. The 1st Sunday of the Month from 2-4 it is

open for the “Under the Oaks” Open Music Jam, where they welcome anyone with an acoustic instrument to come and play with others. For more information on the vibrant history of our community and upcoming events, check out the Mandarin Museum website, www. mandarinmuseum.net and “Like” them on Facebook, facebook.com/ madarinmuseum.

Apricot Lane Boutique

When Toni McCormack opened Apricot Lane Boutique last August, she did so with gusto, perseverance and a whole lot of courage. Primarily a stay-at-home mom for the last 18 years raising two sons and a daughter, Toni combined her background in PR and advertising with her love of fashion to open Apricot Lane. Not having worked much in retail before, she said, “It’s been fun learning the business side of fashion”. Apricot Lane is a specialty boutique offering a one-of-akind fashion experience for the fashion savvy woman. “We carry the latest trends that are unique due to their affordability and availability. We receive only five or six of an item, so once an item sells it’s gone for good. New handpicked items are continuously being brought in as replacements.” Toni’s draw to Apricot Lane was the feel of the corporation as well as their involvement with several charitable organizations, like the 3Strands Mission, an anti-human trafficking organization founded by the CEO of Apricot Lane. When not working at her store, Toni can be found on the tennis court or driving her daughter to school and volleyball practice. Toni loves photography, skiing and travelling. She and her husband Sean, originally from New England have made their home on Fleming Island for the last 13 years.

3 Ways to Keep Your Little Scientist Exploring This Summer

By Sarah Simpson, Club Scientifica St Johns, Florida

Summer break is right around the corner – but that doesn’t mean that it is time to stop learning! Keep your children busy exploring, creating, and analyzing this summer with hands-on science activities that let them experience how science works in the real world.

Concoct Something!

Ooey, gooey, stretchy, and messy! Get your hands wet with some homemade slime – a favorite project of our Club Scientific students! With just a few easy-to-find ingredients, your child can explore the world of polymers! Mix ¼ cup of water and ¼ cup of craft glue (like Elmer’s), add a few drops of food coloring and stir. Once blended, add in ¼ cup of liquid starch and stir, blend, and squeeze away until you have your colorful, stretchy slime! The glue that we use in this experiment is a liquid polymer (all of the tiny molecules in the glue are arranged in strands like a chain). As you mix in the liquid starch, the strands of polymers grip together, giving it the slimy feel. The starch acts as a cross-linker that binds all of the polymer strands together. Gross!

Construct Something!

Playing with a simple set of LEGO bricks can keep your child focused for hours. Even without formal instruction, kids are exploring topics on their own without even noticing such as; problem solving, physics, spacial reasoning, and more as they build and play. Challenge them to build the tallest tower that they can or build a bridge and apply as much weight as it will hold. When it topples, ask, “Why do you think it fell?” and “How do you think we can make it steadier or stronger this time?” Building with bricks or blocks helps children learn how to think in three dimensions as they consider how their pieces should be arranged to reach their goal.

Cook Something!

It’s okay to play with your food (sometimes)! There is a multitude of items that you can use to teach your little one about science in the kitchen. Add vinegar to baking soda for the classic “volcanic eruption”

assist with measuring out ingredients while cooking a meal or dessert and talk about the importance of careful measurement. Hypothesize about what would happen if we messed up! – “If we add too much water, what do you think will happen?” or “If we forget this step, how do you think that will affect the flavor of our cookies?” Help to bring out their curiosity as they prepare their culinary creations.

There is opportunity for scientific inves-

tigation all around us! Keep your child’s imagination occupied this summer with some science fun! For information on our science summer camp program, call Club Scientific at (904)287-8603 or visit our website at www.stjohns.clubscientific.com.

Spring Home Care Tips

by Ben Lavarias, Owner TurnKey Construction & Maintenance

Springtime is the Best time to take care of your Home!” Fixing up around the yard is the first thing most of us do in spring, but many forget to review and evaluate the condition of our homes after the harsh winter months. Doing a quick home evaluation can help prepare you to resolve any conditions that may turn into serious issues as we get into the Spring and Summer rain. A quick review around your home inside and out can save you hundreds if not thousands of dollars in repairs if you resolve any problems as you find them. Not many of us walk around our homes looking for problems, but if we did, it could protect your home for years to come. I have to admit, even being a contractor for over 22 years, I even have a hard time doing this, but I do it. Just like changing your air filter in your AC system, maintenance of one of the most valued things in our lives is imperative to insuring maintenance costs don’t spiral into repair costs which can be exponentially more! Here are a few tips you can use to review important components of your home.

Never under estimate a crack!!

Review that Roof!!

There’s something rotten

10

While most people don’t get on their roofs, it is by far the most important component of your home. It protects the structure, the basic skeleton of your home from the sun, rain and wind. When a roof fails it can start small, but as time passes the rain and moisture are a wedge, widening the damage exposing more of your home to the elements which in turn speeds up the deterioration process. If you are uncomfortable getting on your roof, as many are, call a State Licensed and Insured Roofing Contractor to review your roof for any defects. A way to make sure his evaluation is accurate, ask him to video record his inspection so that both of you can review it from the safety of your home.

Many homes in our area are stucco, some are siding, some brick and some a blend of several finishes. One thing they do have in common are cracks. Stucco may have cracks in the walls, brick can have cracks in the mortar joints, and siding can have cracks in the caulking to the trim or windows and doors. The one thing that all these cracks can do is leak! They allow water to penetrate the exterior finish of your home and seep into walls. Now more recently built homes have a water barrier installed to add a second layer of defense, but why let it get that far? When you find a crack, fix it! Most can be repaired using a good exterior grade caulking to seal it from water. While each exterior finish has different repair guidelines, look on the internet as to the best way to resolve that crack. If you want, call a Licensed Contractor that can help you evaluate the extent of the issue and take care of the home all the way around, top to bottom. Fix each and every crack so that you know you have just sealed your home from anything that wants to get in!

Of course I’m not being serious about our beautiful city, but a lot of homes here were built with a lot of wood siding and trim. While it’s still an acceptable finish, like any wood exposed to moisture it tends to rot, if not properly maintained. Wood siding and trim not properly sealed and painted biannually, will rot from over exposure to moisture. Once the paint or caulking is breached, the wood can act like a sponge, absorbing moisture and wicking it throughout the wall. Now if there is minimal exposure and you seal it in time, you can get away with keeping what you have. But if there is excessive wood rot, the only repair is actually replacement.

but when the siding loses it’s strength, it can basically crumble apart leaving only some wood studs and drywall between you and the outside of your home! Get out and look at your home! Cut out any wood rot and replace it with new siding that you paint on all 6 sides of the board! Yes a piece of siding has six sides, it’s the outside edge sides that are the most susceptible to absorbing moisture and rotting all over again. If you can’t do it, yes, call a contractor.

Don’t leave your closed windows open!

Even when your windows are closed, many people actually leave them open, somewhat. When you look around the house, look at where the window frame meets your exterior finish. Many times there is a crack between these two areas. Whenever you have 2 dissimilar materials together, they expand and contract at different rates which causes cracks to happen here faster. Once that crack is open, windows leak and does so in an area that usually has drapes, a piece of furniture or any number of things covering that

area. It never gets noticed until it is too late. Then it is replacement work that has to happen which is much more expensive than maintenance. You see, that walk around your house can save you thousands of dollars in costly repairs instead of a few hundred in annual maintenance.

Is Your Child’s Brain UNDER-connected? Are Your Child’s Daily Struggles a Result of Brain Under-connectivity? by Teri L. Wesselman, Owner, Brain Balance Sure signs of UNDER-connectivity in your child’s brain can be detected in his behavior, academic skills, and/or social skills. For example, is your child’s behavior disruptive in the classroom to the extent it interferes with his learning and/ or the teacher’s ability to teach? Is homework time complete mayhem? Is your child really bright yet struggles to make and/or keep friends? Is your child very athletic but struggles with reading, spelling, and/or math? Are these challenges unduly placing a great deal of stress on the entire family and/or your marriage? If you answered “YES!” to one of these questions, then most likely your child’s brain is UNDER-connected! Children who have UNDER-connectivity in the brain are typically diagnosed with or suspected of “having” ADHD, Autism, Asperger’s Syndrome, Dyslexia, ODD, OCD, Tourette’s, Learning Processing Disorder, and other learning disabilities. Under-connectivity does not imply brain damage or a brain pathology. In fact, under-connectivity is simply representative of a “functional disconnect” in areas of the brain, especially between the two hemispheres, where communication between the two is broken or impaired. As a result, one hemisphere of the brain becomes STRONGER and FASTER while the other becomes WEAKER and SLOWER. This communication can be compared to one side using high-speed broadband connection to communicate while the other side is still relying on an old dial-up modem. With a lack in balance and effectiveness in communication, noticeable academic, social,

and behavioral difficulties arise. These difficulties can significantly impact one child more so than another. And to what degree these differences impact a child is what determines the child’s diagnosis. Typically, a child with a RIGHT brain weakness/delay can be described as: clumsy, hyperactive, anxious, impulsive, distractible, emotionally reactive, socially awkward and/or immature, having obsessive/repetitive behaviors, having allergies/asthma, and lacking interest in sports. Most RIGHT brain weak children who have been formally tested are diagnosed with ADHD, Autism Spec-

trum Disorder, OCD, Non-Verbal Learning Disorder, and Reactive Attachment Disorder. A child with a LEFT brain weakness/delay typically displays symptoms such as: poor math, verbal, and/or spelling skills, poor decoding skills, fine motor problems, auditory processing difficulty, poor memory for details, missing the small details, low self-esteem, lacking motivation, and having a weak immune response (catches whatever is going around). LEFT brain delayed children are typically those diagnosed with Dyslexia, Expressive/Receptive Processing Disorder,

and other learning disabilities. Regardless if your child exhibits more RIGHT or LEFT brain weakness symptoms, addressing the root cause, the faulty communication between the two hemispheres, with a holistic, multi-sensory approach will restore balance within the child. Through intense and frequent sensory, motor, and cognitive activities directed exclusively to the weaker hemisphere accompanied with nutritional support to achieve optimum brain and body function, development of new pathways and stronger connections within the weaker regions of the brain are realized. These new pathways and improved connections increase processing speeds which promote and enhance communication between the right and left hemispheres. Balance is restored resulting in improved self-modulation, increased focus and attention, boost in selfconfidence, and a dissolution of disruptive behaviors leading to improved academic skills/grade, increased self-awareness and hence, development of appropriate social skills. Such balance restoration brings harmony and healing to the child and the family. The Brain Balance Program does all the above, but most importantly, brings hope to families of children who suffer with behavioral, social, and academic challenges. The specialized achievement center utilizes a drug-free, multi-faceted approach to address the underlying issues in the learning disorders, diagnosed and undiagnosed, that afflict so many precious children today.
