April 2019 Count Your Blessings When our community learned the devastating news about Chris Hemmen’s car accident almost two years ago, it shook our world. One minute he was living the typical life of a teenager, the next he was in a coma fighting for his life. Chris’s story about his incredible family and how his community supported his recovery, as told by his mom, Pam Hemmen, is nothing short of a miracle. It reminds us to count our blessings and smother those we love with kisses because each day is a gift. Our featured business this month is UF Health, an amazing provider of medical treatment in Northeast Florida. Coincidentally UF Health Trauma One is where Chris Hemmen was able to recover from his injuries after his accident. UF Health has a beautiful new office in the heart of Nocatee and in this issue we help readers get to know Dr. McMullan and Dr. Array. In this issue we celebrate autism awareness month with our Autism Resource Guide & a wonderful article about how to identify autism as well as what action steps parents should take.

#Thumbsup4Chris! The remarkable story of a young man, and a family's brush with the unthinkable by Pamela Hemmen

Ever feel like everything in your life is perfect? Yeah, we did at one time too. Three healthy smart kids, a pretty house, plenty of food, Geoff has been successful in his career, my real estate business has never been better, and our friends are abundant and always ready for laughs. We were living the dream! In late June of 2017, my son Chris dragged me along to a traffic counting job, life had been so hectic it was nice to have a few hours of only Chris and I sitting on a rural corner, in the shade, counting cars, talking about life and how blessed we are. How perfect things seemed to be. Not knowing that three short weeks later we would go from “living the dream” to “living every parent’s nightmare”. Our perfect world flipped upside-down with that one phone call….. Chris. Accident. Severe Brain Injury. Hospital. Get here quick. Phone drop. Heart stops. Mind blank. …….Please God No! Chris was on his way to work Sunday, July 23, 2017, at 9AM. He coached 3-5 year-olds, teaching them the basics of sports. Chris loved his job and loved working with kids. This particular morning it was not raining, but for some reason, water had pooled in the road in this one large spot. According to the driver behind Chris, he was driving the speed limit when he hydroplaned and slammed headfirst into an iron fence, then slid sideways where he quickly hit a fire hydrant causing the Jeep Liberty to begin to flip and as the car was in mid-air it hit a tree right at the top middle of the frame of the driver side door. Right where Chris’ head was. The structure of the vehicle did not hold up to the mid-air collision with the tree, his head took the majority of the impact before the car bounced back on the ground. He was wearing his seat belt. He was not speeding. He was not texting & driving. He was not on his cell phone. He was doing everything right. As I pulled into the Emergency Room bay, I swung open the car door before the car actually came to a stop. I ran to the officer waiting to shuffle me into the room that was obviously only used for the most traumatic of patients. The grim, dark look on all the faces of those wearing scrubs told me exactly what I prayed I wouldn’t hear. This is not good. My boy, my sweet 16-year-old boy, was laying there, motionless, wires connected to his head and to his chest, IV’s in his arms, and tubes in his mouth. The machine to the right is rhythmically pumping air into his lungs, breathing for him. The doctor tells me he has a Severe Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI), his brain swelling is significant and increasing, his temperature is rising, and the prognosis is not good. His brain injury was so severe that this hospital could not handle his case. They would stabilize him then we needed to quickly move him to a hospital with a Pediatric Trauma Center, UF Health’s Trauma One was suggested. That was the beginning of our nightmare. A nightmare that continued for many weeks with every moment unsure if he will live or die, be a vegetable for life or somewhat recover, the outcome was uncertain. The only thing we knew for sure was that our life, as we knew it, would never be the same. Our perfect life we worked so hard for, we sacrificed for, we saved for, we fought for….was no longer. These were the darkest and most broken days of my entire life, and I've had my fair share of both dark and broken. But at this moment, a machine was breathing for my handsome, smart, active, thoughtful, caring, motionless, unconscious, brain injured son. The future of our family is unknown, but will definitely involve a very long road and a very strong will to survive. We were definitely grateful for the closeness of our family which would only grow closer. The four of us leaned on each other, cried with each other, supported each other, and talked about what was happening, how to manage our emotions, and how to handle the way other people are handling the situation. This was a hard one. As we are going through this tragedy, we are also having to navigate the fields of how other people handle our tragedy. Some not as good as others. Some we learned to hold closer to our hearts and others we learned to remove from our lives forever. 10 You learn about priorities and you have lots of regrets. Why didn’t

I just keep him home and tell him he could not go to work today? Why didn’t I just have him take the truck? What if I didn’t make him give me another hug before he left the house, maybe those extra 5 seconds would have made a difference? Yes, they made a difference… because I got one more hug that I may never get again. I may never have those tan, soft, teenage arms and hands pat me on my head while saying “you’re cute when you’re short Mom”, or hold my hand in church, or wrap them around me in a bear hug while saying “squeeze!” Yes, those 5 seconds made a difference. All the difference in my world. During the next 21 days of Pediatric ICU at UF Health, we learned far more about the brain than I ever thought I would. From brain swelling, possible surgeries, brain bleeding, tracheotomy, feeding tube, therapists…. So, so, so much MY brain hurt! The doctors did not want to give us false hope by telling us Chris would recover, instead, they explained that he likely would never walk or talk again, would need constant supervision and should always need medications. We all cried knowing our family will never, ever be the same. With much support from our village and a few family members, Chris’ siblings were adjusting surprisingly well. Nolan would sit by Chris and play his ukulele while Sarah would hold his hand and tell him things going on at school or with friends. Chris was still sedated and could not respond, but it felt good for the kids to try to communicate.

thumbs up

The Amazing Hemmen Family; Geoff, Nolan, Pamela, Sarah & Chris

Prayer Circle organized by Sarah & Nolan

The outpouring of support from our community gave Sarah and Nolan the idea to host a prayer circle at our neighborhood baseball field -because Chris loved baseball. There were over 350 people in attendance at this event, some we knew and some we had never met, but all were there to pray and ask God to please leave this child on this earth and please bring him to full recovery. Deacon Jerry from our church came to see us at the hospital after the prayer circle, he had been to see us a few days earlier to pray over Chris and to give him his “Last Rights”. Deacon Jerry said the prayer circle was absolutely amazing and that this was the first time he had ever performed any sort of mass while standing in the back of a pickup truck (the stage) in the middle of a baseball field. After this, we began getting messages from our village flashing one of Chris’ signature poses “a thumbs up” and a message that Chris was on their mind. This gave us an idea….and the Facebook page “#ThumbsUp4Chris” was born. We had our village members posting positive notes, pictures of them with their thumbs up, celebrities with thumbs up, high school clubs, local youth teams, as well as college teams all sporting their thumbs up. It was a great way for people who just wanted to “do something”, to be able to “do something”. It also was a great way for me to be able to post updates on Chris for all the world to see. The kids also mass ordered custom #ThumbsUp4Chris and #Pray4Chris bracelets…soon the whole county was rockin’ these red accessories! After 21 days at UF Health, we were taken by ambulance to Brooks Rehab Hospital. At this time, Chris still had the “glassy-eyes”, couldn’t walk, couldn’t sit up, couldn’t hold his head up, only nourishment came from the feeding tube, he was still on antibiotics form his second bout with pneumonia, and he had only said one or two words. We got settled in his new room, which would be his home (and my home) for the next 6 weeks. Then all at once, Brooks amazing therapists were all in the room evaluating him at the same time talking in what seemed to be code to me at that time. Little did I know it would only be a matter of days before I understood that “code”. While having so many bodies evaluating my son at the same time was scary, the look of optimism, and positive vibes from these miracle workers was felt in a way that just made me cry. An ugly, wet, hard cry. That was a Friday. Saturday & Sunday was spent getting to know the facility, staff, layout, and how things work with only a few therapy sessions. Monday the therapy really began, 6-7 hours a day. By Friday they had him strapped to a machine and 4 therapists helping him walk! Two sitting on the bottom of this contraption, each holding a leg & foot and moving it like he was walking, this was to retrain/remind the brain what it is supposed to do. On this day as I was filming him, he looks up at me flashes a smile and a thumbs up as he says “hi mom”. It was at this point I felt my heart and mind shift from “sit back, observe, learn, take it all in” to “he can do this, he will do this, we will do this”. Over the course of the next 5 weeks, his therapy was intense. He learned to hold his head up, then his torso, then catch a ball and throw the ball. His mind was exercised as well with speech therapy helping with memory recovery as well as math problems. It was weird to see he couldn’t quite grasp the easy 2+2 math but could remember how to calculate the diameter of a circle and the angles of triangles. The brain is a very unpredictable organ. His therapy began every morning at 7 AM and ended between 3-4PM. He would take a nap as the therapy was exhausting,

eat dinner, then Chris and I would extend his therapy on our own. We would talk about how we’re here to get better, so let’s make every second count. Instead of watching TV or sitting around bored, we worked on math games, practiced holding a pencil, writing his name, drawing a picture, listening to music and singing songs, played board games …all of this activated the mind. Soon we worked on learning how to scoot in his wheelchair, with his own feet, without hitting the walls! When the therapists were told how hard we were working in the evenings and realized how intense I watched everything he did in therapy, they began helping me learn and advising what to practice in the evenings. Chris and I would get in an extra 2-4 hours of therapy most nights and lots of extra laughs. My boy was working hard to come back to us and to just be Chris again. On September 15, Chris walked out of Brooks Rehab Hospital. Unassisted. Walked! Unassisted! His only medication was allergy related. His next 4 months were 8 hour days spent at Brooks Outpatient Program which helped improve his cognitive healing while sleeping at home in his own bed. The evenings were for studying with teachers from his high school who came to the house to assist with his studies, he was hoping to stay on track so he wouldn’t be held back. Luckily, my smart boy was ahead of the academic game already and he only “needed” to take 2 classes. He completed these classes before Christmas break. On January 6, Chris walked into Bartram Trail High School right where he left off. He was greeted with hugs and high-fives! Administration offered to allow him the use of the elevator, but he refused and chose to take the stairs because he could. He completed his Junior year along with his peers and is now ready to graduate high school in May 2019 with a 3.1 GPA. In the fall he will move into the dorms and begin his next chapter of life at University of North Florida, in hopes of pursuing a degree in Mechanical Engineering. (If you know of anyone offering scholarships, please let us know!) Chris is currently back to hanging with friends, playing his guitar, schooling many around the pool table, he’s completed two 5K’s, he works out in the gym, he’s even been able to introduce a small amount of surfing and is driving again. He’s started his own business “Barefoot Boys Pressure Washing”, plans to be a BBQ taste tester with his favorite PICU nurse, and hopes to one day drive a Ford F150. Life is good again. Life is perfect again. But life is still unpredictable. Please take a moment to put down your cell phones, turn off Facebook, close up your laptop, turn off the TV, read to your kids, throw a ball with your kids, take a walk with your spouse, talk to an old friend, smell the roses while you can with your family. And always, always, always take the extra 5 seconds for the second “squeeze”.

This year St. Johns Magazine attended St. Augustine Fashion Week (STAFW) featuring Bartram Trail Fashion Academy student designers. Young and full of passion, creativity & motivation, these designers along with the staff of STAFW put on an amazing show. The first of two runway shows was held at a stunning venue, Art N Motion in the San Marco neighborhood. SJM was able to speak with Rebekah Marsh - Fashion Academy Director and Teacher - to learn more about the designers and the program.

SJM: HOW WERE THE COMPETITOR’S CHOSEN FOR THE RUNWAY SHOW ON FRIDAY NIGHT? Rebekah: Students from all four years have the option of participating in the competition portion of STAFW. SJM: WHAT DID THEY DO TO PREPARE FOR COMPETITION? Rebekah: The students who chose to participate in the competition worked independently since January, sketching, selecting materials, constructing and fitting their final designs. The students worked on their pieces in their “free” time and had to do several check-ins with me, so I could track their progress. SJM: COULD YOU TELL ME A LITTLE ABOUT THE COMPETITORS AND THE WINNER OF THE COMPETITION? Rebekah: Rachel Williams and Katie Hayes are sophomores in the program. They first learned to sew when they joined my class last year and have really challenged themselves with this competition. LIDDY DOW is also a sophomore, she is interested in an occupation in the fashion industry and has even started her own fashion blog to get a head start on her career. Lexi Burditt, Carla Moceri and Marta Miles are all juniors in the program. They have been in fashion for three years. Carla participated in STAFW last year, while this was Marta and Lexi’s first time entering. LAUREN DONALSON is an outrageously talented seamstress,

learning from her grandmother at a very young age. Although she is only a junior she has been making her own clothing for years. This was her third time entering into the competition and she was elated to have won. She is inspired by historical fashion and most of her design reflect such. On most days she can be found sewing a new creation sometimes from a pattern and sometimes from her own method and often wears her own hand-made garments. Sewing and designing is a passion of Laurens and she recently received an internship with Limelight Theatre in St. Augustine for the summer. She has already started planning her feature collection for next year. SJM: WHAT DO YOU LIKE MOST ABOUT TEACHING YOUNG DESIGNERS? Rebekah: I choose to be an educator in a subject that enables students to leave school feeling like they have learned a new skill, are efficient in that skill and feel more confident and successful for doing so. I have the advantage of having students for all four years so I get to watch them grow from novice sewers to designers right before my eyes. You see them struggle with concepts and techniques at the beginning and then one day you watch the light bulb come on and they are able to apply all their skills to be independents and create on their own. It is incredible to see their minds at work and to be able to give them the opportunity to express their creativity in such a unique way, and to give them a break from the crazy busy and stressful lives that teenagers live today. It’s a lost art and they are gaining skills that not many people have; it really is an amazing matchless program.

Fashion Academy Teacher, Rebekah Marsh is a native of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and went to school in Scranton, PA she received a degree in Family and Consumer Sciences, the subject formally known as Home Economics. "The incredible thing about FCS is that it is an all-encompassing subject area, where I have the advantage of both educating and creating. I have always had a creative mind; growing up I was a dancer, and a performer and would often provide my own costumes for performances and so I was a self-taught sewer. Although performing was a passion that I could have pursued, I always knew I wanted to be a teacher. When I learned of FCS and had the opportunity to learn to be and educator and hone my design skills in college with courses in apparel design and merchandising, I knew I had hit the jackpot. Moving to Florida and finding this fantastic school and program was a one and a million chance and I am beyond lucky to be in the position I am. I love to learn and there are always new skills to be had so I am consistently looking at courses and classes to stay current on industry sewing that I can then pass along to my remarkable and talented students." www.stjohnsmag.com

STAFW & Bartram Trail FAshion Academy (Continued) students do extensive research on a particular period of time and compose a design that combines aspects of both their era and modern day attributes, they then learn about draping and finally construct their one of kind piece. They also work with patterns, making kimonos, rompers and other garments. An exciting project that seniors participate in annually is an unconventional materials competition, put on by local designer Linda Cunningham. Each year she chooses a new material such as post-it notes and rubber bands or cupcake liners and students have two months to design a one-of-a-kind gown using those materials. They are then displayed at Jacksonville Fair and voted on by the public. Seniors also participate in St. Augustine Fashion Week each year, working in groups to create unique clothing lines which they design and construct themselves, then finding and fitting models for their looks. They then use those clothing lines to create their own theoretical boutique with which they select all the elements one would choose when opening their own store. We also do a multitude of service projects for difference organizations within the community such as Children’s Hospital, Jacksonville Humane Society, local nursing and hospice centers, and many other establishments.

Sophmore, Katie Hayes walking with her model.

SJM: WHAT ARE THE ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS THE FASHION ACADEMY? Rebekah: Students must apply for the program through an online application, with their enrollment to BTHS and are selected through a lottery system. SJM: WHAT HAPPENS ON A TYPICAL DAY IN CLASS? Rebekah: There are four levels to the fashion academy and six different sections of classes. In a day I see six different groups, all working on different projects. They come into class where each student has their own work space and sewing machine, they take out their materials that they store in their lab tables and begin working on their respective project. On non-sewing days they may be sketching, take notes, or presenting a final project. SJM: WHAT ARE SOME OF THE PROJECTS STUDENTS CREATE? Rebekah: Underclassmen have completed projects such as a t-shirt redesign project where they are given a large plain t-shirt and are instructed to use 90% of the shirt to make a new functional design, an eco-fashion project where they use unappreciated clothing and recyclable unconventional materials of their choice to create a wearable design. They also work with a number of sewing patterns to build their basic sewing skills such as pajama shorts, totes, an A-line skirt, and a crew neck shirt. Upperclassmen complete projects such as the history of fashion project which is a yearlong adventure where

16

SJM: AFTER GRADUATION WHAT SKILLS WILL STUDENTS HAVE? Rebekah: Students will have the skills of all the basic functions of a sewing machine, hand sewing, fashion sketching, clothing construction and repairs, and basic design concepts. SJM: HOW ABOUT OPPORTUNITIES? Rebekah: The academy itself is a wonderful opportunity to gain professional skills and combine academic and occupationrelated course requirements that aim both to promote applied learning and to satisfy college entrance requirements. The academies at BTHS establish partnerships with local employers to build sequences of career awareness, with mock-interviews, resume and cover letter help, dress for success days and many other work-based learning opportunities for my students; whether they choose this specific career or not. Although most students choose fashion as a hobby students have had the opportunity to network with local designers to get jobs in their privately owned shops, working for theatres in their costume department, or combining aspects of business and seek jobs in fashion merchandising. If they so choose to continue their studies in higher education they are opening up themselves to start careers as a fashion professional in a wide variety of settings, including corporate offices nation-wide in positions such as Fashion Designer, Buyer, Merchandiser, Wholesale Account Manager, Technical Designer, Product Developer, and Visual Merchandiser, as well as in entrepreneurial roles such as boutique owners and independent designers. SJM: WHERE HAVE SOME OF THE PAST GRADUATES (THAT HAVE GONE ON IN FASHION) GONE TO COLLEGE? Rebekah: SCAD, Miami University of Art and Design, UF College of the Arts

A Message From The Vet With Dr. Kathleen Deckard, DVM, Pets R Family Veterinary Hospital

Otitis Externa (AKA Ear INfection) One of the Top 5 reasons for an exam at our hospital is an ear infection. Why are ear infections so common, what causes it and why does it seem to happen so often or never seem to go away? Many wonder if there is anything that can be done for prevention of an ear infection and if there are easier treatment options. Ear infections are multifactorial and can be one of the most frustrating conditions to treat and manage. The first problem for the dog's ear is structural. The dog's ear canal has both a vertical and a horizontal component, unlike the human ear canal which goes straight in. This "J" shape of the dog's ear creates a predisposition to ear infections as debris must work its way upward rather than straight out. Accumulation of ear wax, skin oil, and other debris feed the bacteria and fungi that live in the normal ear canal leading them to proliferate. Anything that facilitates ear wax accumulation sets the stage for an ear infection. Allergic skin disease affecting the ears is the most common cause for recurring ear infections. Other causes include ear mites, foreign bodies in the ear, or tumors in the ear. The excessive wax along with the moisture from inflam-

mation promotes bacterial growth and/or yeast proliferation and infection ensues. Signs of an ear infection include: scratching at the ears, shaking the head, holding one ear slightly dropped along with ear discharge and odor. These are signs of otitis externa which is an infection of the external ear canal and doesn’t involve the inner or middle ear. Otitis externa can be diagnosed with a good otoscopic exam by your veterinarian and looking at the ear discharge under the microscope to see what type of infection is present. Your veterinarian will then recommend the appropriate medication to be used in the ear. Most infections can be cleared up within 2-4 weeks. We have lots of options for ear treatments now including some “leave in treatments” that require nothing to do at home. It is important that you understand that the treatment will resolve the current infection but does not prevent future infections that may occur. Since most ear infections are caused by allergies, if the allergen is still present, the ear infection may quickly return once the treatment is complete. Some dogs have chronic ear problems (the infection is not

controlled by general medication or returns when general medication is discontinued). In these cases, the ear discharge should be cultured so that the precise organism can be pinpointed and treated specifically. Regular treatment at home with disinfecting ear washes should become part of the pet's grooming routine. Further testing may be in order to determine why the infection continues to recur. Some ear infections simply cannot be controlled with the above steps. These cases have gone beyond medical management and must proceed to surgical management. Ear infections are common and can be challenging. Fortunately, most cases are simple and easily cleared up. Be sure to have your pet’s ear rechecked as your veterinarian recommends to be sure that the infection is resolved. Also keep in mind that chronic use of medication can lead to a resistant infection so if your pet is not getting better with the standard treatment, a recheck with your veterinarian is imperative. Hang in there and communicate with your veterinarian on what can be done to take the best care of your pet’s ears long term.

Long Leaf Church

Inviting friends, family, and new neighbors to experience yoga on a paddle board, kayaking the St. Johns, and going to the gym all sounds very secular. But that’s exactly what Longleaf Church’s approach has been the past 3 years. They call it “Holy H2O Yoga,” “Kayaking with Jeff and Alex,” and “Training for Prayer Warriors.” Longleaf Church is going into the community and breaking down the four walls that are associated with typical churches. But Longleaf isn’t your typical church. Since 2016 they have been engaging with Saint Johns, Saint Augustine, and the CR 210 Corridor areas to show people just how fun and adventurous church life can be. During any one of the oldest and most renowned fresh expressions of church, you can see Pastor Jeff St. Clair and Alex Gallaher paddling alongside some of our community. Kayaking with Jeff and Alex has been wildly popular with as many as 75 people joining for a 2-3 hour paddle in local waterways. At the half way mark of the journey, Jeff delivers an informal and relatable message for his fellow paddlers. This is a new way to reach the community where they’re at. Longleaf Church goes to the people. Longleaf Church announced at the beginning of 2019 that they are launching both traditional and contemporary services on Easter Sunday, April 21st at Freedom Crossing Academy in Aberdeen off of Longleaf Pine Parkway. The Traditional Service will be at 9:00 A.M., Sunday School for children and youth will begin at 10:00 A.M., and the Contemporary Service will be at 11:00 A.M. During the Sunday School hour there will be coffee and donut fellowship time for parents and adults. The Easter Egg Hunt will replace Sunday School on April 21st and families or individuals will have an opportunity to have their pictures taken by the beautiful flower-filled cross. Longleaf isn’t your typical Church led by typical people, with a typical pastor, in a typical setting. Longleaf Church is hands-on, adventurous, outgoing, and missional. Swing by on Easter Sunday to find out what they’re really all about. Who knows, maybe kayaking with your family is the kind of church you’ve been looking for? Autism awareness & Treatment Options by Invo Behavior & Therapy services

WHAT IS AUTISM? Autism is a neurological condition that usually appears in early childhood. “Autism” and “Autism Spectrum Disorder” (ASD) are used interchangeably and include symptoms such as difficulty with communication and social relationships. Every person with ASD has a unique combination of challenges and strengths. There’s a common saying: “If you’ve met one child with autism, you’ve met one child with autism.” HOW COMMON IS AUTISM? In 2018, a Centers for Disease Control study estimated that 1 in 59 children is diagnosed with autism. This is a 15% increase from the 2016 report. Autism occurs more often in boys than girls, with 1 in 37 boys being diagnosed with ASD and 1 in 151 girls. HOW CAN I TELL IF MY CHILD MIGHT HAVE AUTISM? A 6-month old with autism might not make eye contact or smile at people. By one, a child may not respond to her name, babble or point to communicate. Many children with autism don’t speak by 16 months or use meaningful phrases by age 2. WHEN CAN AUTISM BE DIAGNOSED? Children can be diagnosed as early as age 2, although many parents notice signs earlier. Studies show that at least one-third of parents noticed a problem before their child’s first birthday, and up to 80% saw issues by the child’s second birthday. If you’re concerned, make sure your pediatrician conducts an M-CHAT evaluation at 18 and 24 months to determine whether your child is at risk. Parents can also download the M-CHAT online (https://www.m-chat. org/) and do the test themselves.

If results indicate that your child is high-risk or you’re worried, have your child evaluated by a developmental pediatrician or a neurologist. WHY IS AN EARLY DIAGNOSIS IMPORTANT? Numerous studies show that children who are diagnosed early and receive intensive therapy have better outcomes. The earlier the diagnosis, the more time there is for therapy to help a child learn age-appropriate skills, improve communication and reduce challenging behaviors before starting school. WHAT SERVICES ARE AVAILABLE FOR CHILDREN WITH AUTISM IN JACKSONVILLE? Jacksonville offers many options for people with autism. Young children often start with a program called “early intervention” that provides a few hours of speech, occupational, developmental and/or physical therapy each week. However, research shows that up to 40 hours a week of Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) is the most effective therapy to help children and adolescents with ASD learn age-appropriate behaviors, and improve communication and social skills. A scientifically proven therapy, ABA is the only treatment for ASD that’s been endorsed by the U.S. Surgeon General and the American Academy of Pediatrics. Many area organizations offer intensive ABA therapy. For example, Invo Behavior & Therapy services provides inhome ABA throughout Jacksonville for ages 2 to 23. We also offer center-based therapy in Belfort Oaks location and will be opening another center in Lake Gray soon.

Nearly Half of All HVAC Systems are Installed Incorrectly! Don’t take my word for it.... that’s directly from Energy Star, the government-backed program that helps us all save money and protect our environment with energy-efficient products and practices. Let’s put this into reality. Look at your neighbor to the left. Now look at your neighbor to the righ. Likely, on e of them has incorrectly installed cooling and heating systems. Or, maybe your the monkey in the middle? Statistically, at least ONE of you has major problems. Improperly installed systems do NOT last as long, plus they can also cost up to 30% MORE to heat and cool your home. That means more money replacing systems sooner than you need to, plus all that wasted money on monthly utility bills for as long as you own the system.

Properly sized and installed systems are BETTER: Better COMFORT Better QUALITY Better PERFORMANCE Better RELIABILITY Better ENERGY SAVINGS

How Does this Happen?

The OLD Way of installing HVAC systems was the “cookie-cutter” aproach. You know how it goes: one size fits all, weve always done it that way, bigger is better, or some other HVAC myth. And, let’s not forget that our houses are

36

the result of all the lowest bidders by trade, doing the least amount of work possible to comply with minimum building codes, all for the cheapest rpice. Note - Building Code is only the lowest permitted standard allowed by law.

How do we fix It? The New Way is all about customized solutions, precisely deisnged for your home and family. It starts with making sure these 4 mistakes are avoided and/or corrected; improper sizing; incorrect airflow; incorrect charge, and duct leakage. Its not just about “changing boxes” or equipment. This rerequires more than just swapping your existin systems with new ones. Problems are not solved by equipmewnt alone. In fact, WHO and HOW your system is installed by is far more important than what BRAND you select. A top brand with a poor installation is not as good as a basic brand with a quality installation. Study after study finds that 90% of systems tested had at least one operational deficiency. Ensuring your system operates in the top 10% doesnt happen by accident. Properly sizing your systms, then confirming the capacity of your existing ductwork to handle the required airflow are just the beginning, Once everything is sized correctly, strict quality processes to ensure a clean dry pipin, leak-free duct connectons and detialed

system set-up and configuration. Then properly comissioning to verify correct refrigerant charge, actual airflow and more. Lastly, a quality follow-up process to confirm everything a short period after initial start-up.

The Results Properly installed systems go wat beyond just blowing “cold” air in the summer and “warm” air in Winter. They improve your comfort year-round, under all weather season or conditions. Additionally, they create cleaner healthier indoor air too. Properly installed systems provide optimal safety and energy efficiency. They precisely match your needs for the best solutions for your family. Once of the most compelling reasons for properly sizing and installing HVAC systems is COST. These systems have an overall lower cost of ownership than their “cookie-cutter” counterparts. They cost less to operate. They are more reliable, and have LESS Breakdowns. They dont have to be replaced as often, because they LAST LONGER.
