Covering Weather and Traffic in St Johns County When you watch CBS47 and FOX30 Action News Jax in the morning, you quickly notice a difference between their morning news and everyone else’s. “What you get is a lot more local news instead of fluff,” says morning anchor Phil Amato, who migrated over to Action News Jax from First Coast News a few years ago. Added long time co-anchor Dawn Lopez, “We understand that mornings are hectic and people want to be informed before they head out the door. We really focus on local coverage so we don’t waste anyone’s time.” It’s a faster paced newscast, with reporters spread out all over the area. “We have more local reporters in the morning because our viewing area is so spread out,” said morning anchor Letisha Bereola. “Having more reporters gives us an opportunity to cover more stories, especially in St Johns County.” A large ingredient of that local coverage in the morning is weather and traffic. In fact, from 4:30am to 9am, it’s every ten minutes. Action News Jax First Alert Meteorologist Arielle Nixon has been forecasting local weather in the Jacksonville area for over 5 years. “What makes St Johns County unique is the fact that it’s surrounded by water with the Atlantic Ocean to the East and the St Johns River to the West,” said Arielle Nixon. “With so much water interacting with land, you have the perfect combination for storms.” Being in the “traffic” business for over 14 years clearly gives Derrick Odom an advantage. Not to mention that he also works part-time for the Florida Department of Transportation. “I’ve been doing this in one form or another for a long time and nothing is more important than getting you the right information quickly,” he says. You can catch Arielle, Derrick and the rest of the morning team, weekday mornings from 4:30am to 9am, on CBS47 and FOX30 Action News Jax. www.stjohnsmag.com

#1 Why Northern St. Johns Schools consistently Lead in School Performance and All Around in the State of Florida by Debbie Gaylord

Friends of ours recently moved to the area and one of the driving factors in choosing St. Johns was the opportunities afforded through our amazing public schools. Northern St. Johns Schools are part of the award-winning St. Johns County Public School District, named by Niche.com and 247Wallst.com as the #1 School District in the state. Many of the most highly regarded schools are located in Northern St. Johns.

What sets St. Johns Apart is often the teachers at these schools who go above and beyond in their dedication to the students. But the schools are stellar on every level including academic offerings, championship athletics, and a social opportunities through clubs and other extracurricular activities.

Over the years I have had the pleasure of sending my children to SJCPS and have experienced many schools first hand, since one of my children has special needs. Our kids started out at Timberlin Creek and later went to Switzerland Point Middle, then on to Bartram Trail High School. Cunningham Elementary, Switzerland Point Middle & Creekside High School were amazing for high quality special needs teachers and programs. What sets St. Johns apart is often the teachers at these schools who go above and beyond in their dedication to the students. But the schools are stellar on every level including academic offerings, championship athletics, and a social opportunities through clubs and other extracurricular activities. According to Florida Department of Education school grades for 2018 (*from a press release from SJCPS): “The elementary schools receiving an “A” are Cunningham Creek Elementary, Durbin Creek Elementary, W.D. Hartley Elementary, Hickory Creek Elementary, R.B. Hunt Elementary, Julington Creek Elementary, Ketterlinus Elementary, Mill Creek Elementary, Ocean Palms Elementary, Palencia Elementary, Picolata Crossing Elementary, PVPV/Rawlings Elementary, Timberlin Creek Elementary and Wards Creek Elementary. The middle schools with an “A” are Fruit Cove Middle, Alice B. Landrum Middle, Pacetti Bay Middle and Switzerland Point Middle. Liberty Pines, Patriot Oaks and Valley Ridge academies received an “A” as did Bartram Trail, Creekside, Allen D. Nease and Ponte Vedra high schools. St. Johns Virtual School also received an “A”.”

10

For our back to school issue we decided to focus on High Schools in northern St. Johns and really examine statistically why they are so amazing.

Summer Movie Review

Taking Us Back to the Summer of 1979

“In 1979 young Donna, Tanya and Rosie graduate from Oxford University -- leaving Donna free to embark on a series of adventures throughout Europe. On her journeys, she makes the acquaintances of Harry, Bill and Sam -- the latter whom she falls in love with, but he's also the man who breaks her heart. In the present day, Donna's pregnant daughter, Sophie, dreams of renovating a taverna while reuniting with her mother's old friends and boyfriends on the Greek island of Kalokairi.” Universal Studios If you are a super fan of the original Mama Mia, you will enjoy the sequel. Despite a slow and somewhat awkward beginning, it has all the elements: breathtaking scenery, fun ABBA songs and reunions, a familiar story, great lines to inspire and a sad part that promises to make you feel deeply. In the beginning of the movie young Donna tells her friends, "Life is short, the world is wide. I want to make some memories”. She goes on to do just that, traveling to the tiny island in Greece where she first met the loves of her life. Sophie connects with her Mom on a spiritual level (The song performed by Amanda Seyfried & Meryl Streep is basically going to make you cry). We meet Donna’s infamous mother played by Cher, a pleasure to see on stage again with her beauty, wit and awesome rendition of ABBA song Fernando. We meet the younger versions of the men Donna loved and her friends who shared the journey (the younger versions are spot on!). Perhaps the

BODY

Photo by Universal Studios© best part is seeing lives unfold from past to present and understanding the truth of the idea that the experiences we share are deeper than we know at the time. Lily James who plays a young Donna brings a joie de vivre to the part and is clearly a multi-talented star on the rise. Was this the best film ever - maybe not but it delivered all I was looking for in a summer prequel and for that I am grateful. The best aspect of this movie was that it was light and brought me joy, a drastic change from all the serious post-apocalyptic, serial killer and murder mystery films I've been watching of late. If you loved the first Mama Mia and want a night out to laugh and feel happy Mama Mia: Here We Go Again is the perfect selection. You will smile from beginning to end! Keep waiting for that flash mob dance scene - your gonna love it!

Teen Acne Myths.... Busted! By Kim McNickle, Center Coordinator at Skin & Body Center

Boys are not different from girls when it comes to skin care! When puberty hits the teen years can be a frustrating time when it comes to skin care. Bodily changes and surges in hormones can cause blackheads, breakouts, and oily skin. Their skin is more prone to break outs in their T- ZONE- forehead, nose and chin areas. Learning how to properly care for skin at this age sets the stage for clear skin now and healthy skin the future. The more oil and dirt on the skin, the more likely that breakouts will occur. As dead skin cells mix with the oil, they both get trapped in the pores which leads to blackheads and whiteheads. If bacteria is present than pimples and pustules start to form as well. To stop this cycle before it gets out of control, follow the steps below and start caring for your skin right.

DO

1.Cleanse your face 2 times a day morning and night, keep it simple so you avoid irritating your skin. 2.Exfoliate once a week with a wash cloth or a very gentle scrub while showering. 3.A toner and light moisturizer with SPF should be applied after cleansing. Hydration is important to bring balance back to the skin. Just be sure to use a water-based, oil-free moisturizer. 4.Change your pillow case every week or 2-3 times a week. It helps keep your skin from soaking up any dirt and oil that comes from your hair. 5.If you are an athlete, wipe down your face gear DAILY and use face wipes after playing to help keep the face free of dirt, sweat and bacteria.

6.Seek professional advice ….. there are many effective treatments that help combat those breakouts (LED, facials, & peels are a few). A qualified esthetician or in some circumstances, a dermatologist, may need to be consulted.

DON’T

1.PICK, scratch, peel, etc. a pimple! Before acne becomes a problem, act on it early! Don't be embarrassed about seeing an esthetician for skin conditions. It is what they love to do! 2.Assume you know what is best for your skin....follow the directions given to you by the professional. There is a reason why! 3.Over scrubbing and over washing. You never want to have a "squeaky clean" feeling on your skin after using a facial cleanser. If you do, then you have stripped your skin of its protective barrier and potentially causing it to create MORE oil. Acne can not only be a physical stress for teens, but a very emotional problem as well. Don’t wait to start treatment. Skin care treatment options can be confusing and the number of choices overwhelming. Scheduling a consultation with a trained esthetician can help you navigate this arena and steer you in the right direction for quick results. Dermatologists are the experts at skin diseases and should always be consulted when the acne may be atypical or not responding.

South Kitchen BRUNCH offering lunch & Dinner as well!

150 Pine Lake Drive Suite A, Ponte Vedra Beach, FL 32081 904-686-7144 www.south.kitchen/

“Chef Driven Southern Food Done Right!” Ted Sumner Chef de Cuisine I don’t know about you but I’ve been looking for a fun brunch place that is close by and has great food. Well I think I found it at South Kitchen! They are not a buffet type of brunch place but they offer so many choices for breakfast and lunch (brunch) that you don’t even miss the buffet. The cool thing is that they do offer their unlimited Mimosas, Poinsettias (champagne and cranberry juice) and Bloody Mary’s that are often seen at those brunch buffets. But the difference is at South Kitchen you don’t have to choose just one… you can mix and match! Have one of each or more! Their Bloody Mary is a homemade mix which is full of spices along with a smoky flavor that I thought went nicely with one of their breakfast bowls. The one I chose was filled with creamy smoked Gouda grits topped off with some really tender pulled pork and once I stirred them all together the two flavors had a creamy cheesy meaty goodness. Add the spicy sausage gravy and top it all off with a sunny side up egg that just oozed out the rich yoke, your taste buds are in for a real treat! Along with the Smoky spicy Bloody Mary now that is some serious brunch food at its best! Well you know I can’t order just one thing, so to start off the meal I decided to go with a southern tradition of fried oysters. These oysters are buttermilk soaked along with Sambal which I found out is a hot sauce made from a mixture of chili peppers, garlic, shallots, scallions, lime juice, rice vinegar and can be combined with several

other ingredients to make this sauce unique. (Sambal is native to the cuisines of Indonesia, Malaysia, Sri Lanka, Brunei and Singapore.) It gave the oysters a nice what I like to call “back heat” you can taste the heat after you have eaten the food not before. They also came with some made-to-order coleslaw that had Napa cabbage tossed in a homemade Greek yogurt ranch which was tangy and cooled off some of the heat from the Sambal. Then there was this cocktail sauce for dipping. The cocktail sauce itself is worth mentioning. This sauce comes from homemade ketchup (yes none of that store bought stuff for them) along with other spices but what is interesting is that the recipe came from an 1803 cookbook from the White Star liner Titanic, so it is no joke. The mixture of sweetness from the homemade ketchup, spicy from the horseradish and tang from the other ingredients makes it all that more special. I could just eat it alone on a cracker and be happy! My friends (you know I like to eat in numbers so I can taste everything) totally enjoyed their biscuits and gravy scramble as well as bacon egg and cheese benedicts. Along with Mimosas and Poinsettias of course! The menu has many choices to choose from savory to sweet. So if you are looking for fun place to have brunch on BOTH Saturday and Sunday (which is awesome) South Kitchen is your place to be!

Diana Baker Brummer, CSW-RI is the owner of Good Mental Health Counseling & Coaching in Julington Creek.goodmentalhealthllc.com

Excitement is in the air as our children, teachers, and staff prepare to return to school for the 2018-2019 school year. But as excitement builds, anxiety can build as well. Social and academic pressures weigh heavily on our students as they attempt to do it all: participate in sports, maintain good grades, spend time with friends and family, and give back to their communities. Even the most adept students can feel anxiety in anticipation of the new school year ahead. What can we, as parents and caregivers, do to support our students so they have the best possible back-to-school experience?

1. Create a routine. With so much change occurring

at the beginning of a new school year, it is more important than ever to create stability and predictability at home. Implement a routine that works for your family and do your best to stick to that routine. Hungry, tired, stressed out kids (and parents) can't perform their best. Eating healthy meals at predictable times, getting adequate sleep, and making room for some unstructured "down time" each day allows each of us to function and perform better.

2. Keep calm. Children imitate what they see. If we, as

parents, are stressed out, short-tempered, and anxiety-ridden, our children will adopt similar patterns for interacting with the world. However, if we model calm, collected, emotionally regulated behavior, our children are more likely to imitate those behaviors instead. Model calmness whenever possible because getting angry, upset, and frustrated only makes anxiety worse.

3. Watch your timing. We've all been there: had 28

to leave 5 minutes ago, yet we're searching the house for homework that *should* have been placed in the book bag the evening before. Pressure mounting, we want to yell at the kids and relieve our own

frustration. However, our interaction first thing in the morning sets the tone for their entire day. Should they put their homework away at night? Of course! Should you confirm that it's been done before bed instead of when you're hurrying out the door in the morning? Also, of course. Resist the urge to vent frustration and opt to teach at a more opportune time instead. These are just a few ways we can cultivate good mental health within ourselves and our families. For more information on family issues, parenting, and educational support, visit https://goodmentalhealthllc. com/blog. Wishing all of our students, teachers, and staff an amazing new school year ahead!

LIFE ISN’T ABOUT FINDING YOURSELF. IT’S ABOUT

Creating

YOURSELF.

A Message From The Vet Diabetes in Pets: More Common Than You Think

With Dr. Kathleen Deckard, DVM Pets R Family Veterinary Hospital

Diabetes mellitus affects one in 308 dogs and one in 230 cats, yet pet diabetes is often underdiagnosed. Understanding diabetic symptoms for your pets is critical – especially since diabetes left untreated can be fatal in dogs and cats. The good news is that with proper monitoring, treatment, and diet and exercise, diabetic pets can lead long and happy lives. What is diabetes? Diabetes mellitus is a condition in both dogs and cats that results in a lack of insulin production by the pancreas. Insulin is responsible for taking glucose in our bloodstream and converting it into usable energy. A lack of insulin results in a high blood sugar which causes the body to not be able to use the fuel and results in the clinical signs described below. What pets are at risk? Diabetes in dogs and cats can occur at any age. However, diabetic dogs are usually diagnosed at roughly 7-10 years of age. Most diabetic cats are older than 6 years of age. Diabetes occurs in female dogs twice as often as male dogs. Certain breeds of dogs may be predisposed to diabetes and obesity is a significant risk factor. What are the signs of diabetes in pets? Noticing the early signs of diabetes is the most important step in taking care of your pet. If you see any of the following signs, your pet should be examined by a veterinarian. The earlier the diagnosis, the better chance your pet may have for a longer and healthier life. •Excessive water drinking and increased urination •Weight loss, even though there may be an increased appetite •Decreased appetite

•Cloudy eyes (especially in dogs) •Chronic or recurring infections (including skin infections and urinary infections) How is diabetes diagnosed and treated? The diagnosis is confirmed by your veterinarian by finding consistent hyperglycemia and glucose in the urine. Although a diagnosis of diabetes is often relatively straightforward, your veterinarian may run additional blood tests to rule out other medical conditions seen in older pets. A urine culture might be recommended to rule out a urinary tract infection. Once the diagnosis is confirmed, your veterinarian will prescribe an initial dose and type of insulin for your pet. Insulin cannot be given orally – it must be given by injection under the skin at home either once or twice daily. Your veterinarian may periodically need to adjust your pet’s treatment regimen based on the results of monitoring. Dietary recommendations are an important part of treatment. Successful treatment of diabetes requires regular examinations, blood and urine tests, and monitoring. Because older dogs and cats are more likely to develop age-related diseases or conditions, some of which could be confused with diabetes, regular examinations by a veterinarian can keep your pet healthy and detect problems before they become severe. In addition, diabetic pets should be monitored for longterm complications such as cataracts, which commonly develop in diabetic dogs and cats. Other problems that can occur include hind leg weakness due to low blood potassium (hypokalemia), high blood pressure (hypertension), or lower urinary tract infections. Diabetic dogs and cats can live long and healthy lives with proper management and veterinary care. If you notice any changes in your pet’s behavior or weight, consult your veterinarian right away.
