How
did you get started in orthodontics?
I was raised in a dental family. My father practiced 50 years as a comprehensive general dentist with many advanced accreditations in implants, crown, and bridge. Also, both grandfathers had dental lab experience with one owning one of the first in the Detroit area. I have an engineering background with a master’s in biomedical engineering from the University of Michigan. This helps with problem solving for treatment planning and the mechanics of moving teeth. Also, I was fortunate to have a vast clinical experience at both dental school and orthodontic residency. I was honored to be awarded the top prosthodontic award (crown and bridge) and have a year of advanced education in general dentistry. I completed my education with a post doctorate certification in orthodontics and have been a Diplomate with the American Board of Orthodontics for the past 11 years (an honor held by only about 30% of orthodontists nationwide).
What is the typical time frame for most patients?
From 5 months to one and half years
What cutting-edge technologies do you use?
I use the latest digital oral scanning technology and was the first practice in Northeast Florida to embrace these updated slimmer and faster scanners. I use them in digital planning such as Invisalign, Insignia, custom Damon braces, LightForce 3D printed clear braces, and metal printed appliances. They have six 3D cameras in the capture wand, and it replaces goopy impressions with scans that take only two minutes. My 3D x-rays show not only the teeth but their placement in the bone so I can easily move them without fear of compromising the roots. Centering the teeth in the bone also provides a more stable finish. I create digital custom treatment plans for each patient in braces and Invisalign. Plus, our retainers are made and ready for the day braces are removed by digitally removing braces from 3D printed models.
How does the use of the latest technology improve patient outcomes?
It increases efficiency and accuracy. It also helps with planning and
fabrication of appliances such as braces, aligners, and metal printed expanders for a custom fit, and the accuracy of retainers which can be prepared immediately after removing braces. Orthodontics is not a one-size-fits-all therapy. Everyone’s anatomy is different, and we have the tools to respond to and optimize those differences and create their best smile.
What are some of the typical problems you see?
Overlapped and crowded teeth are the most frequent problem I see. In addition to the aesthetic reward of straight teeth, crowded teeth are more difficult to keep clean and since the teeth are out of place, the bite does not fit as it should, and wear becomes a problem over time.
What are the most common treatments?
Unraveling crowding can be done using braces or Invisalign so we tailor the treatment to the patient. Invisalign can be used on patients from age 7 to 80 and beyond so it is always an option in our hands. Because crowding is often a result of a narrow upper palate, we like to see children starting at Age 7 so if an expander is needed to make more room for the erupting teeth, we can get that heavy lifting done early and create a better environment for the permanent teeth to erupt in a much better position. We can accomplish all of that in just 6-9 months; That leaves less work to be done once all the teeth are in. When the teeth are closer to their final positions from the start, retention is easier as well. We encourage parents to bring their children for a complimentary evaluation once the permanent teeth begin to arrive around Age 7. Not everyone will need early intervention but for those who do, it can save the child from more complicated and sometimes invasive procedures down the road.
How does Smiles by Dr. Craig Hadgis Orthodontist give back to the St. Johns community?
My practice has been in place now for over 40 years. I joined back in 2018 and am now sole owner of Smiles by Dr Craig Hadgis Orthodontist. As a local business and family, we feel it is our duty to give back to the communities we serve and do our best to support our patients and schools. We have given thousands of dollars in sponsorships and donations. We appreciate the community support we receive and enjoy seeing our patients and our schools thrive.
What do you like to do in your spare time?
As a University of Michigan graduate, I do enjoy watching college sports. Anne and I have three small children, two girls and our boy just arrived on April 18! Other than helping my patients improve their smiles, there is no place I would rather be right now than with Anne and our children helping them grow! With three we are officially outnumbered and there is always a hilarious, imaginative, or magical moment to enjoy.

Cordova Coastal Chophouse & Bar
So this Wandering Fork got to thinking, as we planned and continue to plan our summer vacations where we head off to faraway places, what are we looking for? Adventure, someplace fun and inspiring, beautiful beaches, amazing cuisine, and possibly history. Then I thought that sounds just like where we live! People travel from all parts of the world to come and enjoy what we have right in our very own backyard. So I say let's not let them have all the fun. Staycation is where it's at!
We have cultivated our little "slice" to be one of the places to go and see. After all, we can honestly say that we have some of the best culinary artists who reside here and are often sought after throughout the country. From our Exotic to our down-home Southern Charm our cooking brings out some of the tastiest and finest cuisine.
Let's take Cordova Coastal Chophouse for example. I was lucky enough to score a private dinner and I was so impressed with the variety, excellence, and overall deliciousness of the food that I thought this would make a perfect Staycation dining experience!
by Lori Allen
Cordova Coastal Chophouse combines the artistry of fine dining and elegance with the simplicity of our southern charm, along with some Spanish roots. So why not slip away from the familiar streets of downtown and enter another world at Cordova. The cool Clasico design with intimate dining, chophouse classics, local seafood, and cuisine that celebrates our coast with Moorish and Spanish influences. For me, it sounds like a slice of heaven!
Now on to the good stuff...
Hand-crafted innovative cocktails are amazing and each served in a specially designed elegant glass, Rose Thyme Aperol Spritz for example, thyme-infused Aperol, prosecco rose’ and a splash of club soda. Refreshing and intriguing, the thyme adds an unexpected herb flair. I also tried their Lavender 75. Not sure what the 75 stands for but it’s made with smooth Hendricks gin, lavender syrup prosecco(bubbles), and lemon. It was like a soothing cocktail with a twist, warm sweet, and bubbly.
I was so excited that they had tartare on the menu. I love anything tartare (I’m weird like that) but I find that whether it’s tuna or beef you get the authentic taste of the meats/fish mixed with some really fresh herbaceous seasoning. Here they mixed fresh Tuna pickled apple, castelvetrano olives, cucumber, radish, and along with their fresh seasonings to make the perfect bite.
I was feeling adventurous and went for the grilled octopus and pork belly. Seemed like an odd combination to me. Grilled octopus & Pork Belly topped with a citrus vinaigrette, tomato jam, and crushed almonds. It tasted like a little bit of the sea mixed in with the land, it was so tender and juicy with a touch of acid to cut the fat. I would order it over and over again.
Beets and Burrata..need I say more? Heirloom Beets, Burrata, and pistachios with some sprinkled citrus on top. The rustic earthiness of the beets with the fluffiness’ of the cheese..Yes!
Allen Brothers prime filet, butter roasted garlic, and truffle butter. Let me tell you it doesn’t get any more top-notch than that. If you have ever had any meat from the Allen Brothers you know it’s a cut above all others. Built on a legacy rooted in Chicago, Allen Brothers pour their pride into everything they do, from sourcing, to aging, to hand-cutting their meats. They have a level of consistency and quality that doesn’t exist anywhere else! If you want a steak this is for sure the way to go! Only the best.
One last food dish I just had to mention Roasted HalibutCalabrian chili pesto, peperonata (peppers and onions), and saffron cauliflower. I was drooling over this dish and I was not disappointed. Come on pesto?? for real? It infused its goodness into the fish with this nutty, basily, garlicky topping, each bite was as good as the next.
I was able to try some of the chef’s specialty deserts (chocolate orb?? wow) and they were amazing! But the expresso martini with Absolut Vanilla Vodka, Starbucks expresso (brewed right there), and Kahlua just completed me. I was a happy camper and totally enjoyed my Staycation experience. This Wanderingfork gives them a +++ !
On a side note the hotel is breathtaking and a nice place to hang out and have a cocktail. They also have a “hidden” room where they put on an intimate Magic show which I never knew. They say that it is an interactive mind-bending illusion that happens right before your face! Sounds pretty cool too~ Adios’ til my next adventure.

TO MILITARY FAMILIES :
WE'VE GOT YOUR BACK (PACK)!
If you’re wondering what pure joy looks like, watch a child’s face when they get to pick out a new backpack. It’s something that’s truly their own, and is part of their identity as they stroll into the first day of school.
At the First Coast YMCA, we’re fortunate to see hundreds of kids’ faces light up every summer when they get brand new backpacks at our Operation Salute: Annual Military Appreciation Back to School Bash. What’s even better, is seeing the reaction of the parents; that’s because one or both parents of all the kids who get backpacks have or are serving in the military.
As an affiliate of the Armed Services YMCA, the First Coast YMCA offers specific programs and services that support veterans and active-duty service members and their families. Florida has the thirdhighest veteran population in the country and with several military bases nearby, we know how important it is to support those who have sacrificed for our country. That includes children in military families, many of whom change schools an average of 6-9 times before they graduate high school. Preparing for a new school year can be tough, especially in a new community and/
or if a military spouse is watching over multiple kids while a husband or wife is deployed.
That’s why the Military Back to School Bash is so important - we want those kids to be prepared for the new school year while removing the burden of back-to-school shopping for parents.
In 2023, we provided backpacks and school supplies for more than 900 kids at seven YMCA locations and this year - which is our seventh annual event - we’re hoping to reach 1,000 kids, again at seven locations around the area. In St. Johns County, we’ll be hosting the Bash on Saturday, July 27th at the YMCA at Flagler Health + Village from 10am-noon. It’s free for veteran and military families and in addition to back-to-school supplies, we’ll have a diverse group of community organizations on-site who are passionate about serving the military by offering discounts and services to military families.
The Y will also have more information about its military programs and services like Operation Hero, which gives children of military families an opportunity to connect
with one another, and Operation Strong & Ready, which is a program for past, present, and future service members to operate at peak performance, both physically and mentally. If you’re a military family (activeduty or veteran) who’d like to register for the event, please text YMCAMILITARY24 to 41444 or email me at dtroeger@fcymca. org.
It really does take a village to support our military community, and the First Coast YMCA wouldn’t be able to do its part without organizations like VyStar, who is our official Military Outreach Partner. We also receive support from people in the community who are passionate about honoring those who have served. If you’d like to join those who help provide programs and services at a discounted rate for our military members and families, please visit fcymca.org/donate. Thank you to those who have done so already, and to the brave men and women (and their families) who have served our country in the armed forces.

Pet ownership has dramatically increased over the last several years, with 66% of households owning a pet. One of the most significant factors contributing to this recent increase was COVID. During COVID, people had more time at home due to quarantine, but also, many people worked from home which allowed them to have more time to train and care for a pet. Dogs in particular, are highly social, and most dogs thrive best when they have company. Many of these pets that were acquired during COVID, developed separation anxiety behaviors when their owner(s) went back to work, and they were now left home alone.
What are the signs of separation anxiety?
Signs of separation anxiety include increased barking, howling, and whining, destructive behaviors and having “accidents” in the house. If your dog has these signs, make an appointment with your veterinarian to obtain a diagnosis and create a plan for treatment. Try to obtain a video of your dog when home alone which can help your veterinarian better understand what you are experiencing with your pet to assist in dialing in this diagnosis and aid in monitoring treatment.
What causes separation anxiety?
Changes in the home or peoples’ schedules can cause separation anxiety. Some dogs naturally have trouble being alone from an early age despite never going through any major events. Dogs from shelters and dogs with single adult owners tend to have separation anxiety.

SEPARATION ANXIETY
The Fear of Being Alone
because the behavior primarily occurs when your dog is away from you, and you are not there to help. Many times, anxiety begins even before you even leave the house. There are even dogs who can tell the difference between workdays and days off. Treatment often involves a combination of medications and behavior modification.
Step 1: Medications are often needed
We first must treat your dog’s emotional state before we can help them learn to cope better alone. This treatment often involves both long-term and short-term medication in the beginning. In the US, the two medications that are approved to treat separation anxiety in dogs are Reconcile (fluoxetine) and Clomicalm (clomipramine). Though effective and with few side effects, they can take up to 2 months to fully work and are usually combined with shorter-acting drugs such as trazodone, gabapentin, clonidine, or alprazolam to achieve rapid results. Medication should always be combined with behavior modification.
Step 2: Avoidance
Try not to leave your pet home alone until the medications have time work. If you do have to leave your dog alone, try not to come and go frequently. If you have several places to go, do all your errands then return rather than leave multiple times.
Step 3: Food dispensing and Puzzle toys
Food dispensing and puzzle toys such as a snuffle mats, slide puzzles, and treat tumblers, can help reduce your dog’s overall stress level. They encourage the dog to be independent.
Step 4: Create a Relaxing Environment
A safe-haven will help your dog feel comfortable even when you are not at home. Encourage your dog to retreat here throughout the day, when you are not leaving, for special treats and rewards. If your dog is not comfortable being in a crate, do not use it as the safe-haven.
Step
5:
Exercise daily, but do not overdo it.
Step 6: Independence Training Exercises
Teaching your dog to feel safe alone is the mainstay of the separation anxiety treatment plan.
☑ Give your dog something fun to do before walking out of the room to keep your dog busy as you leave.
☑ Teach your dog to “go to” and relax on a mat.
☑ Ask your dog to do something, such as sit or lie down, before you leave and give your dog rewards like food, toys, and attention, which can help establish a relationship that is consistent and predictable which reduces overall anxiety.
Step 7: Absolutely No Punishment
Yelling, spraying water, physical corrections, like spanking or holding the dog down, bark collars, shock collars, vibrating collars, and even saying “no” could all be considered punishment and goes against what we are trying to accomplish. Please don’t ignore your dog’s separation anxiety. Work with your veterinarian to help determine a game plan to get your pet on the road to a happy place, both with you and in your absence.
