As I go about my daily life, I am often struck by t he natural beauty of northeast Florida. We are blessed with scenes of wonder from every vantag e point. The expansive marshlands and estuaries of Guana or the dunes at Anastasia Island covered in sea oats. The tranquil waters of the St. Johns River at Alpine or Rivertown Park. Mi les of Loblolly and Long Leaf pines that flank our roadways. The ancient cypress and towerin g live oaks draped in Spanish moss that often remind me of works of art.
This blend of coastal and inland natural wonders ma kes Northeast Florida a region much sought after to live and raise a family. Our commun ity has grown in a short period of time as new neighborhoods provide more and better ways to e njoy life here. Lobsta Anyone?
Calling all food lovers!! Anyone looking for great food deals during the week?
After all, who doesn't like the "chef's special" or "special of the day"; Especially now that the kids are back in school and everything is go go go! Wouldn't it be nice to have some great food you don't have to cook at a great price? Well, listen up… I can't even begin to tell you how much I enjoy the nightly specials at Julington Creek Fish House and Oyster Company.
Monday
Let's take Mondays for example, you've carted around everyone all weekend, so why not take a break and stop in and get yourself a pound of the juiciest crab legs for a fraction of the cost. Big tender crab drenched in warm butter. I personally need to have at least 2 pounds because they are that good.
Tuesday
Or Tuesday after dropping the kids off at practice, or stopping off from work for a quick break. All-you-can-eat SHRIMP! and it comes in three different ways. Grilled or Blackened both skewered and cooked to perfection. Or lightly breaded and deep fried to golden deliciousness. And guess what, you can try them all! Just start off with one kind and work your way through all three after all it is all you can EAT.
Wednesday
Hump day (Wednesday) Fresh Oysters on sale! along with sipping a cool glass of white wine sounds like the perfect hump day to me! I love them raw with a little lemon, horseradish, and just a little melted butter…crazy I know but so so good.
Lightly steamed for my second batch (yes they are that cheap) with melted butter and topped off with a dab of cocktail sauce served up on a cracker. My Hump day is complete!
Thursday
Of course, this former New Englander's ultimate favorite is Thursday Lobster nite. A full steamed lobster with a side, you can't buy it and make it yourself for what they charge you here..and guess what… there is no mess for you to clean! Winner!
Personally, I like to dive right in there cracking and pulling out that tender juicy lobster, dipping it in the butter, and plopping it into my mouth so fast that the butter dribbles down my chin. Trust me not one part of that lobster ever gets wasted! It all goes into my happy belly.
I would be remiss if I didn't mention their homemade sides. I know they are an afterthought from the main course but the ones here at the Fish & Oyster Co, someone must've told them that we ain't serving no average sides, I mean grilled asparagus tossed in Steak butter, topped with parmesan and fried onions, or how about their flame grilled broccoli topped with chimichurri...are you kidding me chimichurri? and my ultimate favorite fried rice, green onion, carrots, and peppers topped with Nori, and fried garlic, outta this world.
So cash in on those nightly specials at the Julington Creek Fish House and Oyster Co, you won't be disappointed.

There are so many options available, and products evolve constantly to keep up with customer needs and demands. Our Agency works with several carriers to shop the market and find what works best for you. Most people think that life insurance is expensive. This is a common misconception, and the reality is the longer you wait to secure it, the more expensive it gets. My advice is to get life
insurance in place when you are young and healthy because you never know when something will happen and usually when you need it is exactly when you cannot get it. If you do have an existing health concern, there are still products out there for you as well so don’t let that deter you from exploring your options. Coverage through your work or employer is often insufficient. What if you change jobs and can’t keep that policy? Having a policy you own outside of work will likely be your best option long term. Remember that life insurance is not for you, it is for the ones you love if something happens to you.
Please let this be your gentle reminder to get coverage in place if you have not already, update your beneficiaries on your current policy if needed, and reach out to us if we can be a resource for you. We are always happy to help answer any questions you may have!

Sunsetting Summer:
YMCA, A Reflection of the Community
For more than 100 years, the First Coast YMCA has been an integral part of Northeast Florida, and we pride ourselves in responding to residents’ needs by providing resources for them to live a healthy life. Yes, physical exercise is important, and we have programs that promote that. But there are so many elements to being healthy, and this summer showed our efforts continue to make an impact here in St. Johns County.
One of our core focuses is on youth development and we’re proud of the services we offer for the next generation. For thousands of kids in the area, our summer camps this year once again provided experiences they’ll take with them the rest of their lives. Inevitably, some kids come to camp who are hesitant at first, but once they connect with their peers (without the use of technology) and build bonds through shared experiences, the result is a totally different child than the one who walked in just a few weeks earlier. Parents have said to their kids, upon seeing them at the end of summer camp, “You look like you’ve grown taller this summer,” and that’s evidence of a new-found confidence we’re fortunate enough to facilitate and witness first-hand.
One of the most remarkable examples of impact in the community over the past few months was at the Solomon Calhoun Community Center Pool in St. Augustine. More than 300 children were able to learn potentially life-saving lessons in our Safety Around Water program there. We know that childhood drowning is a major problem in Florida, so we want to ensure these kids have the right education at an early age to help stop that trend. That also includes swim lessons for children (and adults!) of all ages and abilities. Over at the Brown Family YMCA, one of our instructors is providing swim lessons to a non-verbal autistic boy who is fascinated by water. Just this year, across all First Coast YMCA locations, we’ve served more than 7,000 individuals in swim lessons and our Safety Around Water program. Whatever your family situation may be, we’ll work with you to make sure you and your kids know how to be safe when they’re around any body of water.
Our focus on the entire family continued at our annual Operation Salute: Annual Military Appreciation Back to School Bash at our Flagler Health + Village location. This event gave families of veterans and active-duty military essential back to school resources like backpacks, notebooks, clothes, and more. As an Armed Services YMCA, we have designated resources for those who are serving or have served our country, and that includes families. If you fit into that category, please reach out to us at any of our branches so we can get you connected to all we have to offer.
In addition to resources for kids, young families, and the military, we’re also serving senior adults at all of our St. Johns County locations. Our partnerships with initiatives like Silver Sneakers and Renew Active offer YMCA memberships at little to no-cost for seniors. Plus, programs like Exercise is Medicine and EnhanceFitness are giving members the tools they need to live a healthy and productive life. These are all a part of our focus on Healthy Aging, as we want to foster a welcoming atmosphere for adults aged 50 and better, as many of them have developed a special sense of camaraderie by connecting with others through our programs.
The examples mentioned above are just a fraction of what we’re providing to the St. Johns County community. Soon, we’re hoping to make a major announcement about expansion, which would provide even more opportunities to this fastgrowing landscape we call home. If you’d like to financially support those efforts and our programs, or if you just want to learn more about all the First Coast YMCA provides for the community, check us out online at fcymca.org.

Our Adventure in Ireland
Our Irish Adventure
by Debbie Gaylord
GALWAY, THE CLIFFS OF MOHER & DUBLIN
Galway Bay,
Ireland had always been a dream destination for my husband and me, a land of myth, magic, and endless green. So, when the opportunity arose to go there last Spring Break we jumped at the chance. Since we only had one week we decided to narrow our exploration to Galway and Dublin. Galway, as it was the place of my ancestors, and Dublin because we had an old friend who lived just outside the city and wanted to combine our journey with a chance to reconnect. We included the Cliffs of Moher as no trip to the emerald isle is complete without it.
Our adventure began on St. Patrick’s Day when we ventured to the West Coast. Galway welcomed us with open arms, its colorful pubs, and friendly locals creating an infectious energy. We stayed at Corrib Guest House, a bed and breakfast adjacent to its famous Tea Room. The full Irish Breakfast, pastries, porridge with fresh berry compote, and rich coffee were mouthwatering. We explored the Latin Quarter and strolled along the River Corrib near our Bed & Breakfast out toward the scenic Galway Bay, enjoying the laid-back yet festive vibe of the day.
The Galway Cathedral, where we listened to St. Patrick’s Day Mass, was a highlight; its stunning architecture a testament to the city's rich history. Later that day we experienced the
Galway St. Patrick’s Day Parade, listened to music in the street, and enjoyed Irish coffee, fresh seafood chowder, and more live music at the Famous King’s Head Pub on High Street.
From Galway, we booked a full day bus tour that showcased the raw beauty of County Clare in the Province of Munster including the Wild Atlantic Way, the Burren, and the Cliffs of Moher, a natural wonder that took our breath away. Standing at the edge of the towering cliffs, with the wind whipping and the ocean stretching out before us, felt like a moment of pure magic. It was a truly unforgettable experience. We enjoyed listening to our fun and knowledgable tour guide from Galway Tour Company, learning about Irish history in the region.
The River Corrib, Cliffs of Moher
Our trip culminated in Dublin, a city that effortlessly blends history with modern charm. We wandered through the cobblestone streets, marveling at the Georgian architecture and the lively atmosphere. A pint of Guinness at the Guinness Storehouse was a must, and the panoramic view of the city from the top floor was simply breathtaking. This was followed by a fun tour of Roe & Co Distillery, where we learned all about Irish whiskey. A quick trip to the iconic Temple Bar to listen to some live Irish Ballads was a must (although its mostly tourists).
Dublin’s literary heritage was palpable, and we couldn’t resist a visit to Trinity College to see the Long Library and Book of Kells. Another highlight of our trip to Ireland was the food. We decided to do a small group food tour called Delicious Dublin Food Tour where we trekked throughout the city with a guide and tasted local dishes including various Irish stews, cheeses, ice cream, and more. I miss the delicious Irish brown bread served at every meal, and the freshest seafood.
The Irish people have a strong sense of history connected to both The Famine and The Easter Rising. While in a pub one night we saw a newspaper clip posted on the wall, a moving letter from P.H. Pearse (President of the Irish Republic) to his mother written during the Easter Rising; "Do not grieve for all this, but think of it as a sacrifice which God has asked of me and you".
Trinity College Long Library
We stayed at Wynn’s Hotel in the heart of Dublin, appreciating its old-world charm, convenience, and traditional breakfast served by waiters in black and white. Dublin is a walkable city, and public transportation, if needed is a breeze.
On our last night, we enjoyed a lovely seafood meal in the Coastal town of Dalkey, only a twenty-five-minute subway ride along the water, with our Irish friends whom we were able to reconnect with. It was the perfect ending to an amazing trip.
Ireland captured our hearts in a way we hadn't anticipated. The green lush landscapes were breathtaking, the people were warm and welcoming, the music was subline and ubiquitous. We returned with hearts full of memories, a newfound appreciation for Ireland, its people and its culture, and a desire to explore more of this incredible country.

"DANIEL’S COMMITMENT TO CHILDREN IN CRISIS
For 140 years, Daniel has been a lifeline for countless children and families in desperate need. The nonprofit was a life-changing resource for 14-year-old Christopher*, who was in foster care due to parental neglect and abandonment.
Daniel’s Corporate Office on Southpoint Blvd.
Christopher's Story
Growing up in an abusive household, Christopher faced many challenges – and some continued even after he was adopted by a caring family. He was diagnosed with ODD, ADHD and depression. Christopher also developed an addiction to electronics, which often led to conflicts within his new family. These issues, along with severe anxiety and guilt, made it difficult for him to maintain social boundaries.
Fortunately, Christopher’s parents connected him with Daniel’s Residential Treatment Center, an in-patient treatment center for children aged 5-17 with severe mental and behavioral issues. Daniel’s professional team utilized Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), and Trust-Based
Relational Intervention (TBRI) techniques to help Christopher learn to regulate his emotions and apply coping skills when stressed or triggered.
“After several months, our son came home with a different outlook,” said Christopher’s mom. “While he still struggles with becoming easily frustrated, our son was able to learn new techniques and skills for handling his feelings in healthier ways.”
In addition to working with Christopher individually, Daniel provided therapy to the entire family so they could best support his progress.
"We felt that they truly cared about their patients and genuinely wanted our son to have a positive and healthy life,” his mom said.
This program is just one of the many ways Daniel supports children and families in the community. Daniel connects hundreds of children with foster and adoptive homes. They help homeless teens find places to live and learn independent living skills. The agency also plays a crucial role in preventing child abuse by strengthening at-risk families.
“Daniel helps an average of 5,000 children and families each year in a wide variety of ways” said Lesley Wells, CEO and president of Daniel. “Thanks to the generosity of our donors and partners, we have long been a vital resource for this community and will be here to offer continued help for many years to come.”
For more information about how you can help the children and families Daniel serves through donations or corporate sponsorships, please visit danielkids.org or call 904-296-1055 ext. 1033.

A Message From The Vet

SNAKE BITES DOGS, CATS & OWNERS BE PREPARED
Anyone living in Florida that has a pet, has an innate fear that their pet may encounter a snake at some point when they least expect it. Snakes are generally nocturnal, however they can be startled during the day if your pet gets curious and runs through an area with tall grass or puts his/her nose under a rock, log or bush. Summer is the time of year that veterinarians begin to see dogs and cats coming into the hospital more often for treatment of snakebites. Here are some things that you should know to help keep your pet safe from these poisonous creatures.
There are 50 snake species here in Florida, only 6 of which are venomous. The venomous species include the Copperhead, Cottonmouth, Eastern Diamondback, Canebreak Rattlesnake, Pigmy Rattlesnake and the Coral snake. The first 5 are pit vipers, which have a pit between and slightly below the eye and nostril. Pit vipers also have long movable fangs, a "cat's eye (vertical)" pupil, undivided scales under the tail, and a large triangular-shaped head with a small shiny cap over the nose. The Coral snake is quite a different kind of venomous snake, more closely related to Cobras. It has no pits, and its body is ringed with black, yellow, and red bands with a black snout. It is helpful to be able to identify the type of snake that has bitten your pet, however, it is not imperative for getting the proper treatment. Do not try to handle a snake or get too close to examine it. If you can, pay attention to the colors and features or snap a picture with your cell phone.
It is estimated that 150,000 dogs are bitten by venomous snakes in the US every year. Snake bites are usually found on the pet’s head or neck. The first thing you will see is one, two or several puncture wounds with bleeding, bruising, pain and immediate swelling at the site of the bite. Factors that affect the severity of the bite include the amount of venom injected, the size of the pet and the location of the bite. The severity of the signs does not necessarily reflect the severity of the systemic envenomation. The onset of clinical signs after envenomation may be delayed for several hours. The systemic signs that may develop include shock, lethargy and weakness, muscle tremors, bleeding problems, nausea, vomiting and neurological signs.
There are several treatments for snakebites that have fallen out of favor over the years because they can cause more harm than good. Here are some things you should NOT do: Do not put any sort of tourniquet on your pet. Do not apply ice. Do not make any cuts into the skin and do not try to suck the poison out. Do not apply a compression bandage to the wound.
Venomous snakebites are life threatening emergencies requiring immediate medical attention at your veterinarian’s office. Treatment for rattlesnake and coral snake bites involves supportive treatment including pain medications, iv fluids, and administration of the appropriate antivenin. Antivenin is expensive so be prepared that your visit will be
costly. Your veterinarian will want to perform some blood tests to determine the severity of the bite. The bite wounds are clipped and cleaned, and the patient is monitored often for increased swelling and bleeding times. The pet will need to stay in the hospital for a minimum of 24 hours, but many patients are treated for many days. It is common for more than 1 vial of antivenin to be needed for an individual patient and there is a small risk of a reaction to the antivenin. In addition to the immediate treatment of the venom side effects, long term effects can include tissue damage that could require surgical intervention. Also, the venom can have some effects on internal organs so it’s important to do follow-up bloodwork a few weeks after treatment.
Approximately 80% of pets survive snake bites if treated quickly. The survival rate is much lower for pets that are left untreated. Immediate aggressive treatment offers the best outcome for your pet so it is important to have a plan for where you will go to seek medical care both during the day and after hours. Equally as important is to be sure that those chosen facilities are equipped to handle a snake bite emergency. Be aware and be prepared to better care for your pets.
