WJXT Morning Team is St. Johns County's Favorite

Like your best friends from college or the kids you grew up with in the neighborhood, that’s what stands out

immediately about the morning anchors at News4JAX on Channel 4. “We’ve been a team for so long, we really are a family.” That’s how newsman Bruce Hamilton describes the group which consists of him, co-anchors Melanie Lawson and Jennifer Waugh, and Meteorologist Richard Nunn. Where some anchor teams try to create the illusion they like each other, the genuine affection this group has for one another was obvious on a recent morning spent over breakfast at Maple Street Biscuit Company in Julington Creek. “We really care about the community because our viewers are our family, and you truly can’t get the family feel anywhere else.” That was Hamilton’s message when asked to describe the “secret sauce” that’s made this group the most trusted morning news anchor team in town.

Lawson says their success comes from a

strong desire to move past the obvious. “We’re just like you. We want you to know what’s happening, yes, but we really want you to know how what’s happening affects your life.We want you to feel its important to watch us every day because if you do you’ll be informed, offered solutions to problems, and learn about the good things happening where

6

you live.”

It’s about balance according to Lawson, who met her husband in St. Johns County covering a story (Tarik Minor is also an anchor at News4JAX) and balances life as a working mom with the needs of her two young children. “We want to help you start every day the right way.” Added Nunn, “That’s right. Weather is so important in the morning. So every day I do a bus stop forecast and track storms moving through St. Johns neighborhoods.” The viewers have clearly noticed. The Morning Show on News4JAX is St. Johns County’s number one choice for news having earned the title of most watched for six years and counting. “We love our northern St. Johns viewers and are committed to making sure you know what’s happening in your neighborhood every single morning,” says Jennifer Waugh, a Jacksonville native. “Our local

roots help us sift through the news and focus on telling the important stories our viewers care about.” Waugh doubles

“We love our northern St.

Johns viewers and are committed to making sure you know what’s happening in your neighborhood every single morning

as one of the station’s investigative reporters and insists the philosophy is simple—“We want to help you start every day with a newscast that’s worth watching.”

Back to School Stress Lunchtime Woes Minorcan Mama,

My kids are already dreading Back to School. This breaks my heart because I was a kid that loved school and couldn’t wait to go back. How can I get my kids back on schedule and motivated for a great year? Sincerely, Motivated Mama Dear Motivated Mama, I totally understand your problem and your kids’ perspective—it can be so hard to get out of the easy, laidback routine of the summertime. The best thing to do is to start them back on their routine a week or so before they go back. This may be tricky, but start by making them go to bed ten minutes earlier, then fifteen, until you get them back to their school year bed time. Then start waking them up in the mornings the same way. Now that you’ve got them started back on their school routine, and they may be loathing it, do some things to get them psyched about school—let them plan a playdate or sleepover with a few friends they haven’t seen all summer, let them help with school shopping, and have them set some academic and extracurricular goals for the year. After the first day, take them out for a sweet treat, and then spend time letting them tell you about their day. Share some of your past “first day of school” memories and then talk about their hopes and goals for the year, use this time to connect with them. These days will be ones you will cherish for years to come.

Modern Mama imparting a love of history, culture and nature on my two little ones

Motivated Mama Dear Minorcan Mama, My kids are taking their lunch to school this year for the first time. What tips do you have for making packing lunches easier? Thanks, Lunchtime Woes Dear Lunchtime Woes , When it comes to packing lunches, preparation is the key! Set aside a place in your refrigerator and pantry specifically for lunch supplies. When you bring home items from the grocery store, prepare as much as you can for the week ahead. Chop fruits and veggies and place in baggies. Portion out chips and crackers in their bags, as well. When it is time to make the lunches, you will be happy you are so organized. Now on to the age old parenting question—make lunches the “night before” or “morning of.” Either one works and it depends on your preference, but making it the night ahead assures it is done should any morning-of emergencies should arise—like a missing shoe or a bad hair day. The night before place all items in your child’s lunchbox and place in the refrigerator. A frozen pack assures your child’s lunch stays cool and fresh and can be added the next morning on the way out of the door. Designate a special area in your kitchen for lunchboxes. All students, Kindergarten and up, can be responsible to place their lunchbox in their special spot right when they come home. You can also show them how to place the ice pack back in the freezer and remove any items that might be trash or leftovers. Preparation and routine go a long way with packing lunches. Your Need To Know Guide for Back To School Nutrition by Nancy Cohen RDN LDN Nutritionist

In a few short weeks, the backpacks will be out. The first day of school clothing selected, and the opportunity for your children to grow physically, mentally, socially and emotionally has begun again. Kids have so much energy to expend during their busy days. The best solution is to make every calorie count and pack it with nutrients that offer stability, value and sustained energy release. A great “out of the gate” strategy for eating well this school year is just what you need to send your kids into a successful flourishing calendar year.Try these Winning Strategies to make our kids the best learners they can be!

Avoid Energy Dropping Foods and Beverages

Offering your children sugary soda, sweetened coffe drinks and candy is a guaranteed way to expect an energy crash in one to two hours.Offering your children water, milk, nut milk, unsweetened teas or healthier snacks can stave off the crankies.

Snacks are a kids best friend Providing fuel in the form of a carbohydrate and a protein is a win-win situation. You get peak performance, better focus and continued energy supply for growth.

Simple Snack Ideas ее ее ее ее ее ее ее

Frequent Meals and Snacks

Kids do best when they receive calories with a little protein every 3 hours- they are growing, using their brains and muscles and food supports all this and keeps them calm and focused.

Food Group Balancing

Be sure to incorporate something from every food group at most meals- for kids this would be starches, fruits, veggies, dairy, proteins and fats. Try to see that you hit the mark by the end of the day. Missing a whole food group? Consult with your pediatrician or Licensed RDN Nutritionist.

Grammy Award-Winning Roots Musician

Delbert McClinton and His Band Self Made Men

Returns to the Ponte Vedra Concert Hall Friday October 6, 2017 The Ponte Vedra Concert Hall proudly welcomes the return of Grammy awardwinning roots musician Delbert McClinton and his band Self Made Men on Friday, October 6, 2017. Delbert McClinton last performed at the Ponte Vedra Concert Hall on September 25, 2015. Tickets for Delbert McClinton & Self Made Men will go on sale this Friday, July 21 at 10 a.m. There are two kinds of people in the world: those who love Delbert McClinton and those who haven’t heard him yet. Delbert is always working on that second group. Lyle Lovett has said, “If we could all sing like we wanted to, we’d all sing like Delbert.” The multi-Grammy Award winning artist is at the top of his game with his 19th studio album, Prick Of The Litter (Hot Shot Records/Thirty Tigers). The new offering captures the balance of soulful energy and restraint that the legendary performer has been delivering in his live performances for decades all over the world. On Prick of the Litter, Delbert incorporates a variety of styles, and as always, just enough to keep him comfortably outside the traditional marketing categories. Prick Of The Litter blends Delbert’s signature rhythm and blues sound with a newer jazz-influence inspired by Johnny Mercer, Nat King Cole and other legendary crooners. McClinton's road band, Self-Made Men provide a hard-driving rhythm section, powerful guitars and innovative piano, accented by punchedup horns. Delbert’s definitive vocals and distinct harmonica licks bring it all together. Delbert McClinton has been a leading Americana artist since before the genre was established. He has won two Grammy awards in the blues category

for Best Contemporary Blues Album; and one in the rock category (Best Rock Performance by a Duo or Group), with Bonnie Raitt for "Good Man, Good Woman". Delbert’s unique musical style grew from his Texas music beginnings. Influenced at a young age by Tejano, Western Swing, Rhythm and Blues and War songs, he developed a signature sound that served him well. If you’ve seen a live Delbert McClinton show, you will recognize the synchronized energy on Prick Of The Litter that comes from thousands of miles of playing together. Delbert feels that his current road band, Self-Made Men, is the best band he’sever had. “Jack Bruno [drums] is amazing. He played with Joe Cocker and with Tina Turner for years. I’ve been harder on drummers than anybody in the world, but Jack is right there where I need him. Dana Robbins [saxophone] and Quentin ‘Q’ Ware [trumpet] punctuate the live performances in just the right places. James Pennebaker [guitar] is family. He’s been playing with me off and on since he was nineteen. Mike Joyce [bass guitar], Kevin McKendree [piano], and Bob Britt [guitar] are among my best friends, in addition to being in the band. Mike and Kevin and I write together a lot. We wrote most of the songs on this album together.” 2017 is a milestone year for Delbert. In addition to the release of Prick Of The Litter, a biography is slated for release in September. He has also been nominat-

ed for Texas State Musician, a highly acclaimed state appointment akin to poet laureate. Tickets for Delbert McClinton & Self Made Men will go on sale this Friday, July 21 at 10 a.m. Tickets will be available for purchase at the Ponte Vedra Concert Hall and St. Augustine Amphitheatre Box Offices, online at ticketmaster.com, all Ticketmaster outlets and by phone at (800) 745-3000. SHOW: Delbert McClinton & Self Made Men DATE: Friday, October 6, 2017 TIME: Doors 7:00p.m. / Show 8:00p.m. TICKET PRICE: $73.00 – Rows A thru K $53.00 – All Remaining Rows WEBSITES: www.delbert.com; www.pvconcerthall.com www.stjohnsmag.com

How Nicole Lost 85 LBS and Gained Health, Happiness and Quality of Life

Let Her Story Inspire You

How would you describe your state of health and fitness before finding SCULPTAFIT? How did life take you to that state? While I never considered myself to be in poor health, I was physically out of shape and tired. After 25 years of marriage, 2 children and opening a business, I realized I had forgotten about taking care of myself along the way. Being a mom and wife, were there things that worried you about your health profile? I always put everyone else first, that's what mom's do, right? I'm not regretful about the choices I made but have realized as I've watched my children age, that I have a lot more things to look forward to. I came to the realization that I had to make a change if I planned on traveling with my husband, playing with grandchildren, and living a long and healthy, active life. How did you discover SCULPTAFIT? I had seen SCULPTAFIT but had not yet ventured in to inquire. A friend told me about SCULPTAFIT and I had the opportunity to meet Joey at an event.

20

Before finding SCULPTAFIT, did you try other exercise programs or diets in the past? In the past, like most women, I was always focused on weight loss. I’d lose some, then regain it, plus more. Over the years I tried many popular diets and weight-loss systems, I also tried a women’s toning franchise when they were around. I had some early success with them, but nothing that was sustainable for me, nothing that lasted, like I’m experiencing now. What was it about SCULPTAFIT that made you feel this could actually be the thing that helps you? Truthfully, I had no idea if Sculptafit would be the right fit, but I was desperate to make a change. The trial session was a great way for me to see what the program offered. That first workout was hard, but I could do it. It was enjoyable and I felt like I had accomplished something. I decided to stick with it.

If talking to a friend, how would you describe the Team and method at SCULPTAFIT? The team is the most amazing part of this. The coaches are encouraging and help you modify the moves if you need it. They are truly invested in each and every client and want to see you succeed. The exercises are easy to understand and it's fun making friends in class. How long have you been a client? I've been at SCULPTAFIT for 10 months What goals have you achieved so far? My goal was really just to feel better. I felt tired and achy. Of course I wanted and needed to lose weight, but that wasn't as much my focus. After the first 6 weeks, I was feeling energized. I began to find other ways to be more active and started walking on the days I wasn't at SCULPTAFIT. Eventually I started making healthier food choices as well. My results have been astonishing. Not only do I feel younger, stronger and healthy, I've also lost 85 lbs. What differences do you see in yourself both physical and mental - as a result of this new approach to exercise? After losing 85 ponds, of course the physical change is undeniable. I've actually had people not recognize me. The mental change is amazing too. I have actually created a new lifestyle over the last 10 months and that is the part that is different. I never went on a "diet" this time. I set out to become active and healthy. The progress has been steady and since I've been through many holidays, vacations and family events AND still stayed on track, I truly feel like it has become the new "normal" for me. What differences and changes does your family see in you? The change for them has been gradual, but the first thing they noticed was my positive attitude and healthy habits. Not only have they always been encouraging but have participated with me in this change of lifestyle. We exercise together when our schedule allows for it and my

husband enjoys the healthy diet. How have these improvements impacted your personal day to day life and mindset? The impact on my life is very positive. I have tons of energy and I'm not dragging through the day. I sleep better, don't need antacids or other over the counter remedies. My physical exam this year was outstanding and all my numbers are normal. My outlook on life has improved tremendously. Do you have a favorite exercise, or certain aspect of the overall philosophy that you love? Or both? I love that the rotations change every 4 weeks. While some exercises come back around, you never get bored. It's fun to see yourself getting stronger and more physically capable. With all the progress you've made so far, what long term goals do you have for your overall health and wellness? I'm just ready to live life to the fullest. I'm so happy that I don't have physical limitations or considerations when making plans. Is there anything else you would like to add that we may not have touched on above? If you are tired of all the other things you've tried and aren't sure what to do, talk to the folks at SCULPTAFIT. There is no magic pill and you have to be dedicated to making a change. Love yourself enough to try it out. If I can do it, you can too!

The Perfect Bite

Unique Reviews By Lori Allen A Local Foodie

Rype & Readi Golf Bistro

Rype & Readi Golf Bistro 4900 Cypress Links Boulevard Elkton, FL 32033 So a few weeks ago I was lucky enough to score an invite to this cooking/demo class. I thought it was going to be held somewhere on County Road 210. Much to my surprise it was held at the St. Augustine County golf course in what is known as the Rype & Readi Golf Bistro. So I brought a friend and headed down to 207. When we walked in we were greeted with a pretty yet casual table setting and the Chef from Prohibition Kitchen, Joshua Day. We were immediately served a Pisco Sour cocktail (Pisco is a style of brandy common to Peru and Chile which has a bit of a tequila flavor) which was super light, a little sour from whatever they mixed with it but packed a bit of a punch. While we were enjoying this summer cocktail Chef Joshua began go over how to prepare marinated sautéed vegetables. He used some red and yellow peppers, onions and fresh herbs along with a blended oil of canola and olive oil. The peppers were thick and hardy and after lightly sautéing them he chilled them. He said you can even prepare them a day ahead of time so that they absorb all the herb flavors. They were placed on top of a toasted sourdough crostini along with some fresh creamy goat cheese and then topped off with these really cute teeny tiny tomato thingys called Sweeties or Inca drops. They added just the right amount of sweetness and tomato flavor for an awesome bite! Next we had some fruit. Of course it wasn’t just your average bowl of melons. These melons were mixed with this infused vinaigrette that the chef had brought with him. In it he had used lavender, honey, blended oil and white balsamic (he said that the white balsamic is mellower and not as tannic (acidic). I kept dipping the fruit into the vinaigrette because it would add that zestiness of vinegar, yet sweetness from the honey making the melons just “pop” in your mouth. It was a great combination of sweet and fresh! (Did you know that you can tell if a cantaloupe is ripe by smelling the center of it and if it smells like nail polish you got yourself a good one!) To top off the melons there was some fresh feta and of course you need a little green so basil too….Yum! Fresh St Augustine pink shrimp was up next. These were marinated with the blended

oils, lime because it’s not as strong as lemon and tarragon (tastes like black licorice). Then thrown on the grill to give them a nice char mixed in with all that flavor, so good. They were served with yellow and zucchini squash ribbons (the fancy term was Summer Squash Marmalade). I had to go out and buy a Mandolin slicer after this because I wanted to make this type of side again! Super thin ribbons of squash marinated then chilled to seal in a ton of flavor along with the grilled shrimp it was the perfect light summer dish. Watermelon shaved ice was the last thing on the menu; this was served with a splash of grand Marnier (orange liquor) delish! That was my bit of a fancy experience and it was oh so good. But I had to go back to the Bistro to try their more casual menu and in particular their Friday Nite special. All you can eat fried chicken..that’s right all you can eat! This simple but very good meal comes with a homemade really thick biscuit with real butter. Then a pile of fresh cut fries that are nice and crispy and still have the skins on them which of course I love. Coleslaw that varies depending on the night and what fresh ingredients the chef has to offer also came with the meal. The evening I went it was a red cabbage one tossed in apple cider which was so crisp and zesty and went so well with the fried chicken. So about the Chicken? Chef Chris Mcgarry brines(brining with buttermilk will help tenderize the meat, while adding a nice tang) the chicken the day before and then soaks it in buttermilk again, dredges it in flour, then dips it once again in the buttermilk and flour to give it a nice thick coat of well-seasoned batter. The chicken is then quick cooked in superhot oil so it is darker than you would expect but it’s oh so juicy inside. You can have your choice of white, dark or both. The cool thing is that the breast is deboned so you get a big chunk of juicy white meat. My son loved that for sure! It also came with fresh watermelon for desert. When we went they had this watermel-

on called moonbeam that is yellow instead of red. Which was cool to look at but we all decided it pretty much tasted the same as the regular watermelon. This is a great place if you want to play a round of golf or just go hit a bucket of balls and stop in after to have lunch or dinner. The food is made to order, super fresh and they use fresh ingredients from their farms which is really cool because you get to try out new things! And if you are interested in their Cooking demonstration/ classes check out their website..that’s what I did! Enjoy!

The title of this article may not have much to do with school, makeovers, and magic, except this is all I see EVERYWHERE I go. Be a unicorn. Be yourself. Unless you can be a magical mermaid unicorn, then be that! Don't get me wrong, I love unicorns, rainbows, and mermaids too, but its back to life and reality in St. John's county. And---I don't know about you, but I'm so ready for cooler weather, school routines, and tighter schedules. Yeah yeah, it might be awhile. But classes start in less than 2 weeks and I'm ready to do the happy dance. Summer brought us the ability to sleep in and stay up late, but the school year gives parents a bit more of our freedom back. Don't judge, you know you've been counting the days too! I truly believe beauty starts from the inside out, however, sometimes we need a fresh start, the ability to reimagine ourselves. I may not be a unicorn, but I do love helping people find simple style solutions that are mermazing! On a magical makeover note: Next month I will be featuring makeovers of local women. Could it be you or

someone you know? A high school student? A mom or woman in need of change? My hope is to have my team of professionals style a few amazing women out there, with a "new you" or new idea/lesson. We will help you with hair, makeup and style, and capture it all with a professional photograph. What a difference a day can make when we see can ourselves in the mirror and we can feel a new sense of confidence: reenergized! My goal is to make someone smile again and have them think "I am enough, but THIS change is Good!" So, will it be you? Or do YOU know someone who could use a makeover revival? My local team and I are here, waiting to hear from you. And so excited and happy to serve you! How to receive a makeover by Nikki: Please send me an email including a recent photo and why you want a makeover to Nikkilyn.holm@gmail.com

Age Restricted Communities In Our Area aka “Active Lifestyle Communities”

by George L. Ballou, II Broker Associate Menton and Ballou Group Watson Realty Corp. Del Webb Ponte Vedra at Nocatee - Anastasia Club, including overview, outdoor pool & indoor pool. It shouldn’t come as any surprise to people living in Florida that there are developments amongst us that specialize in 55+ age restricted communities or as their marketing people like to call them “Active Lifestyle Communities”. In the interest of full-disclosure, I want to reveal that my wife and I live in such a place in Nocatee…Del Webb Ponte Vedra to be specific…which is a 55+ age restricted community. It is interesting to talk with potential residents when they are visiting these communities and what their perception is about the life behind the gates. It seems that either they think we are all sitting around in wheelchairs, drooling and waiting for the apple sauce cart to come or we are all waiting out on the curb in front of our house waiting for the party bus to pick us up for our pre-planned day of activities! Both are as far from the truth as they could be. Many people are still working full-time, travel extensively, participate in many of the clubs and activities or they are like me and seldom leave the house if they are not working. Basically, these communities are just like any other gated development but often have significant amenities for the age group they are catering too. Age restricted generally means that one person living there is at least 55 years old. Something most people don’t realize is that a property can actually be owned by anyone of legal age. The restriction is strictly about the age of who lives in the house and not the age of who owns it. In addition, no one under the age of 19 may live there full-time. I thought it might be useful to those considering making such a move if we pointed out the top age restricted developments in St. Johns County so you can see how they compare and differ;

HOA fee is $320 per mos and includes individual lawn care maintenance for each home. Guard gate is not manned. Bridge Bay at Bannon Lakes Located in the master-planned community of Bannon Lakes just East of the World Golf Village and I-95. The community offers a variety of Active Life-Style amenities and activities for 55+ active adults. Residents enjoy a lowmaintenance lifestyle with an on-site activities director. Pulte Homes is the developer (They also own Del Webb) and began construction

of the community in 2017. At completion, the community will contain 167 attached and single-family homes. Single-family homes come in three different floor plans ranging from 1,671 to 1,968 square feet. The activity center for the owners is the 4,000 sft clubhouse which includes a fitness center and pool. Villages of Seloy Located east of I-95 off Rt. 16 just minutes from St. Augustine. 240 home sites at total build out with homes built as attached 2 or 4 home clusters. The COA (Condominium Owner’s Association) fees range from $235 to $277 per mos depending on size of home and covers individual lawn care as well as common area maintenance. The owner’s clubhouse is 3,000 sft. Unmanned gate. No CDD fees. Currently at about 25% build out and now opening Phase 2. As you can see there are several choices for those eligible to live in these communities and I would encourage you to take a drive some day and explore each of these developments. It’s the best way to find out if they are a good fit for the next chapter of your lives. Be sure to take your agent with you…they can help you choose wisely and save money!

A Message From The Vet With Dr. Kathleen Deckard, DVM Pets R Family Veterinary Hospital

What Dog Parents Should Know about the Dog Flu

What is canine influenza? Canine influenza is a highly contagious respiratory disease that is caused by the canine influenza virus (CIV) Type A. There are two known strains in the US, H3N8 and H3N2. H3N8 originated from an equine virus and was first reported in greyhounds in 2004 and has since spread to at least 40 states. H3N2 originated from an avian virus, was discovered in 2015 in the US and has spread rapidly this past year. There is no evidence that either strain of canine influenza can infect people, however H3N2 can cause respiratory signs in cats. What are the symptoms of the CIV? • Coughing • High fever • Lethargy • Loss of appetite • Nasal discharge How is CIV transmitted? The canine flu is transmitted through aerosolized respiratory secretions from an infected dog (eg. Coughing, barking, sneezing) as well as contaminated objects and people. The virus can remain viable on surfaces for up to 48 hours, on clothing for 24 hours, and on hands for 12 hours. It can be killed with standard disinfectants used in veterinary hospitals and boarding facilities. It is also susceptible to dilute bleach cleaners. Virtually all dogs exposed to CIV become infected, with approximately 80% developing clinical signs of disease. The approximately 20% of infected dogs that do not exhibit clinical signs of disease can still shed the virus and spread the infection. Most dogs recover within 2 to 3 weeks. However, some dogs may develop secondary bacterial infections which may lead to more severe illness and pneumonia. Although most dogs recover without incident, deaths due to H3N2 can occur.

How is CIV diagnosed? CIV cannot be diagnosed solely by clinical signs (coughing, sneezing and nasal discharge) because these signs are also present with other canine respiratory illnesses. Tests can be done by your veterinarian to diagnose and identify the strain of canine influenza virus if it’s suspected. How is CIV treated? Treatment largely consists of supportive care. This helps the dog mount an immune response. In the milder form of the disease, this care may include medication to make your dog more comfortable, broad spectrum antibiotics and fluids to ensure that your dog remains well-hydrated. Quarantine for a minimum of 4 weeks is recommended to prevent spread. How is CIV prevented? A bivalent vaccine offering protection against both strains is now available. Vaccination can reduce the risk of a dog contracting canine influenza. Vaccination may not all together prevent an infection, but it may reduce the severity and duration of clinical illness. The canine influenza vaccine is a "lifestyle" vaccine, and is not recommended for every dog. In general, the vaccine is intended to protect dogs at risk for exposure to CIV such as dogs that go to dog parks, grooming and boarding facilities, daycare or other areas with group dog contact. Contact your veterinarian if you suspect your dog has symptoms of CIV or to discuss vaccination. Dr. Kathleen Deckard, owner of Pets R Family Veterinary Hospital 904-452-7387
