Dr. Jonas Ashbaugh Blue Sky Dental Group

A smile is often the first thing you see when you look at a person. Which is why it is important to entrust the health and beauty of your smile to a highly skilled dentist who puts your care first. Dr. Jonas Ashbaugh, Owner of Blue Sky Dental Group, is that kind of dentist and his dedication to his patients is apparent in every detail of his practice. “Dr. Jonas” opened Blue Sky Dental Group in July 2017. He always knew he wanted to settle down in north Florida with his family and was excited when the opportunity presented itself to open his own practice here. He studied at the University of Florida and later went on to dental school at The Ohio State University College of Dentistry. After graduation he enlisted in the US Army and became a Captain, providing dental care to soldiers and their families. For Dr. Jonas, one of his greatest joys in life is the look on his patient’s faces when they see their dental work come together. He shared the story of a patient who was born without four teeth. He required extensive dental work over a period of time, including braces and grafts. In the end Dr. Jonas was able to pull it all together and give this man a new smile. He will never forget the day the man saw his smile after completion of all that work. It literally transformed his face. Dr. Jonas says it was a privilege to serve him. While not all cases are that dramatic, it is the ability to help people that gives Dr. Jonas his passion for dentistry. A combination of low stress and high-level tech-

Photos by Monika Colichio nology reflects the philosophy of care at Blue Sky Dental Group. When you enter the office you instantly recognize it as a place where patient care and comfort are highly valued. From the beautiful modern design of the waiting room, special touches like bottled water and fresh coffee to the courteous and attentive staff who greets you. Patient rooms are equipped with flat-screen TVs where you can watch Netflix, snuggle up with a pillow and blanket while using our wireless headphones to relax with the sounds of your favorite music. The aroma from warm, scented towels provides the perfect ending for your visit. Dr. Jonas believes cutting edge technology contributes to a more productive and comfortable dental visit. In well-appointed treatment rooms, Dr. Jonas provides state-of-the-art care using digital x-ray machines which subject patients to much lower levels of radiation than traditional x-ray machines. They also have 3D x-ray technology, which gives us a more in-depth view of dental tissues.

He also realizes that cost is sometimes a stressful aspect of dental care. He and his staff work diligently with insured and those paying out of pocket to ensure costs remain reasonable. His goal is to help patients to maximize benefits or find alternative payment options in order to keep their smiles healthy and beautiful. Dr. Jonas and his wife Kathleen (who is also a dentist) live in Durbin Crossing with their two young sons. Life and work as a dentist is busy but his favorite thing is coming home and playing with his children each night or packing up all their baby gear and going to Mickler Beach or Porpoise Point in Vilano Beach with the family on weekends. If you need a highly skilled dentist with a passion for dental health, please visit Dr. Jonas at Blue Sky Dental Group. Hi Everyone! What a great time of year to dedicate yourself to your Health and Wellness. You may be wondering- is there anything new I need to know? The truth of the matter is, there are some Nutrition and Health Basics that do not change: Eat Right, Exercise and Get Plenty of Rest. However there is never a time when the reminders of the tried and true some new ideas might assist you to keep the Spring in your step when it comes to Good Nutrition for Your Health. While we are always trying to figure out the latest diet craze, we are also always thinking about giving up the foods we love- NOT TRUE! Why don’t you approach your foods with a sense of style and taste? 1.Rather than frying, breading, oiling or drowning your foods in fats- consider using more Healthfilled CONDIMENTS on your favorite foods? Try: Salsa(s), Yogurt in place of sour cream, Hummus on a potato rather than salad dressing or dip or avocado spread rather than mayonnaise? Give your mouth a treat and your waistline too. 2. Rather than POURING oil or butter on your foods try: Cooking with broth, wine or fruit juice. Using a BASTING BRUSH to put butter or oil on rather than pouring it on. Using a pump or spray for oils in cooking. This will significantly reduce the amount of fat you eat.

8

3. ADD MORE FRUITS and VEGGIES to your diets and recipes...and reduce the serving size of your proteins. It’s about flavor, taste and texture…. So

doubling up your peppers, onions and other veggies will fill you and your plate up while reducing your calories, sodium and saturated fats. 4. ADD PREBIOTIC RICH FOODS to your diet so that your digestion is ready to produce healthy bacterias. Benefits of a Prebiotic-rich Diet: Improves satiety and weight management; Protects against gut infections and even some types of cancer Reduces incidence and symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome ; May increase uptake of certain minerals, such as calcium and magnesium ; Improves overall immune function by decreasing the presence of harmful bacteria .Try adding these foods to your everyday routine: Best Food Sources of Prebiotics • Bananas, berries, and legumes • Garlic, onions, Jerusalem artichokes, and leeks • Whole grains • Nuts and seeds 5. Increase your intake of food from the Sea- whether that be fish, mollusks or shellfish. Just remember the cooking method is what is important. Grilling, Broiling, baking and boiling are the lower fat methods while frying, breading or dipping in oils make these beautiful heart healthy foods become calorically laden and high in fat and saturated fat. Here’s to your health today and everyday! Check in with your local Nutrition Professional & Registered Dietitian Nutritionist. Nancy Cohen RDN LDN www.feedingthebodyfeedingthesoul.com

Coastal Wine Market & Tasting Room

10

So our little area of the world is beginning to boom! More and more restaurants and bars are heading down this way. Every time you take a ride down Nocatee I am sure you will see something new. But for the past year or so Coastal Wine Market & Tasting Room has planted their roots and begun to bloom. A few friends and I decided to check out the wine tasting and small plate selection right before Christmas. We got lucky and they were holding one of their local benefits so if you brought in a toy for needy children you got a free wine tasting! This warm and friendly establishment is always helping out in the community. I had attended a run sponsored by Chemo Noir a few months before and that’s where I heard about Coastal Wine Market, they were there offering free tastings to help the benefit. They really embrace the local spirit! So when you open the door to this ornate yet not pretentious, quaint Tasting Room you are greeted right away with warm friendly smiles and hellos. You can see all the wonderful wines displayed and a chalkboard listing all the specials. Because it was the holidays my friends and I decided to go with a little sparkling Rose seeing how it was the special of the evening. It was light and somewhat fruity with lots of bubbles, a perfect pairing for some cheese and crackers. We went with just one cheese, a nice sharp Manchego that was served with toasted bread and herbed Pecans. This set the tone right away with every bite complimenting the sparkling wine. Our next wine was a Pinot Noir and we choose some Coastal Wine Potato Wedges or as others would refer to them as loaded potato skins. They were filled with wild boar, Karst Cave Aged Cheddar and were served with a side of Lemon Chive Aioli for dipping. They were

not huge, hence the name “small plates” but they were packed with flavor! You could taste the meatiness of the boar and sharpness of the cheese cooled down with the Aioli. Really good. We also tried the Rustic Stuffed Mushrooms and had to fight over who got the last one! These are filled with Italian cheese and crispy prosciutto and of course a nice tangy cabernet reduction. Swipe those thru the reduction and pop them in your mouth for a bite of rich creamy mushroom flavor with just a tad bit of “zing” from the wine. YUM! Our last bite of flavor was their market meatballs. You can order as many as you want because they are priced per piece. They come with what they call “Homemade Jersey Gravy” which is essentially a wonderful garlicky red sauce that the meatballs are simmered in and then they top it off with some fresh Basil Ricotta Cheese. You can’t stop dipping your meatball in that soft creamy cheese!

There are so many wines and some craft beers to choose from and the staff is so helpful, knowledgeable and super friendly so don’t hesitate to ask. They encourage you to tell them what you are looking for or want to try. I am sure that they will be able to find a great wine for any palate. They also have this incredible charcuterie (Cheese/meat boards) to pair with those wines. There are so many different varieties to choose from…goat cheese, soft blue, aged cheddar, spicy Edam to name a few. Then you can add ham, pepperoni, dry salami, even Texas wild boar, along with some seasoned nuts and unusual crackers and maybe even a spread of jam. You won’t be disappointed. And the coolest thing is that they offer these boards TOGO which comes in a handy portable box so you can take that short drive down to the ocean plop yourself down on a towel with your box of treasures and enjoy a beautiful sunset! Ahhhhh the Florida life!

Get Hyper-Aware With Pilates! by Theresa Scully, PT, CPI. Arch Pilates Wellness Studio

12

Improve your physique and keep the pounds off with Pilates. Pilates is more than an exercise program, it is a way of life! With Pilates focused exercise, you will be hyper-aware of how you use your body during the day. You will take heed to the stressful positions you may hold your body while working at the desk, standing at your work station, or bending and lifting your child. Fitness should be a lifelong commitment, and Pilates will grow with you as you grow wiser! Pilates will actually fend off the degenerative effects aging has on joints. It is an exercise routine that is non-stressful on the joints and creates body symmetry. As I insert my professional opinion here as a physical therapist, an unbalanced body is responsible for the wearing down of joints we call arthritis. Arthritis and spine degeneration are painful and physically limiting. What is Pilates? First of all, pronounce it, Puh-la-teez. Pilates is the last name of the creator, Josef Pilates. He was German born, a sickly child, and developed his exercise system first of all to heal himself as a teen. Later, when released from being a POW in England, he was assigned to rehabilitate injured soldiers in WWI. This role caused him to develop the exercise machines used in Pilates studios called the Reformer and Trapeze Table (AKA Cadillac). How does it work? There are 2 ways to exercise, on the mat and on the machine. Both systems complement each other and utilize the same principles. Through breath and mental focus exercises set your body up first in the proper position to execute certain strengthening movements. Secondly, we create movement from the core or powerhouse and isolate specific arm, leg, or whole body movements. Then, through slow and controlled movements we contract the muscles with eccentric control developing tone and flexibility all at once. Main focus is to contract your abdominals the entire exercise session. In most gym programs, the abdominals get 15 minutes of focus at the end, which is good, but contracting your abdominals for a full hour while you strengthen your arm and legs is even better! Who does it? Everyone from baby to wise lady (and lad)! Baby, you ask? Try a mommy ‘n me Pilates class. Wise lad, you ask? The Trapeze table uses springs to guide arthritic joints through strengthening without compression on the hips and knees. Athletes benefit greatly from Pilates to work out tight muscles and balance out the one-sidedness some sports require. Repetitive or sustained postured workers should also do Pilates to help with these stressful positions. Pilates for Men? Absolutely, yes! Men are typically made with tighter muscles and joints. Men tend to choose intense exercise routines to build muscle bulk. A defined chest and legs is a great goal to set when weight-lifting, however, Pilates offers the man’s body a chance to “undo” kinks and muscle compensations that occur with lifting heavy weights. Pilates will also improve mental focus and relax the mind since the emphasis will be on isolated movements of the small muscles. Many men now do Pilates because it feels good! It can be

integrated into a weight-lifting program or a sole Pilates practice. The Reformer has resistive springs that give you that weight lifting experience but at a slow, controlled, and core isolated place. Not to mention it helps with back pain. Is it Cardio? No. Classical Pilates is not cardiovascular. But how do you lose weight with it? There are a number of Modern Pilates classes that integrate cardio such as Pilates Barre or even a cardio specific class that moves through the routine rapidly and uses a jump board in a vertical position on the reformer (still gentle on the hips and knees). Instructors know the importance of cardio for weight loss, so there are many programs that include cardiovascular work. Interestingly, participating in Pilates based exercises sets your mind up for healthy living. Remember I mentioned that Pilates helps you become hyper-aware when you’re not in the Pilates studio? Therefore, you will less likely put unhealthy food into your body which naturally sheds pounds. But, since your breathing capacity and physical endurance improves, running, walking, or biking gets easier on the body. And these activities just require the good old outdoors! As a recap, here are a few benefits of Pilates: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8. 9.

Defined abdominals Toned arms and legs Toned rear-end Improved Muscle and joint flexibility Full body conditioning Improved Posture Improved spinal stamina Easy on the joints Improved breathing capacity

Lastly, to insert my medical professional opinion, Pilates is excellent for rehabilitation. Especially for back pain and back surgery. I have worked with low back pain patients for 18 years in physical therapy. Core strengthening and postural strengthening has always helped my patients with reduction in pain and even resolution of symptoms. The pain management world is now seeing the benefits for their clients and recommending Pilates as a part of the pain management program. So, there you go! If you are looking for a new exercise routine or want to mix it up, try Pilates. You will be introduced to a very unique and powerful workout! Theresa Scully, PT, CPI. Allergies What if you had 5 simple ways to avoid the sneezing, wheezing, itchy eyes and runny nose that come in the spring? by Dr. RAchel Watkins, MD Board Certified Allergist & immunologist

1

Spring cleaning can spruce up your nasal passages Sweeping up the cobwebs that gathered over the winter is good for more than just making your house look better. A deep house scrub can help eliminate existing allergens and clear the air. Because your pets have spent a lot of time indoors over the winter, fur, saliva and dander have probably collected. Vacuuming frequently and washing upholstery and pet beds can help.

2

Know the power of pollen to affect asthma – Some people with allergies may not realize that symptoms they think are allergy-related might actually be asthma. Studies have shown that nearly two-thirds of those with asthma also have an allergy, which can make the spring season particularly difficult. If you can’t get rid of a cough, or get winded easily, you might have asthma related to allergies and should see an allergist.

3

Time to clear the air – Despite what you may have heard, the best way to clean the air in your home is not with an ionic air filter. The best way to clean the air is with a HEPA room air cleaner rated with a Clean Air Delivery Rate (CADR). For those with central air, change your air filters every three months and use filters with a MERV rating of 11 or 12.

4

Wait, don’t smell that “fresh” air – Spring comes and you just want to open your windows and let in the fresh air. Don’t do it. So keep your house and car windows shut during allergy season. Use your air conditioning with the new air filter you just put in.

5

Don’t trust “Dr. Internet” – You know you shouldn’t believe everything you read on the internet, but it’s so tempting to look up cures for your symptoms. Instead, consult an allergist.

Dr. Raquel Watkins, MD received her Doctor of Medicine from the University of Maryland. After completing her Internal Medicine Residency training at Wake Forest University, she was appointed Chief Resident. She served on Faculty at Wake Forest University School of Medicine as the Associate Program Director of the Internal Medicine Residency Training Program, before returning to fellowship in Allergy and Immunology, both pediatric and adult. Before leaving Wake Forest to live in Jacksonville, FL., Dr. Watkins was on the Wake Forest University School of Medicine faculty in the Section on Pulmonary, Critical Care, Allergic and Immunologic Diseases, specializing in the care of pediatric and adult allergy and asthma. Dr. Watkins has authored numerous scientific publications, championed using the best available evidence in patient care and has a Master of Science in Clinical Epidemiology. Dr. Watkins is a board certified allergist by the American Board of Allergy and Immunology, a conjoint board of the American Board of Internal Medicine and the American Board of Pediatrics. Raquel enjoys kayaking and biking with her husband and children. On the weekends you can catch Dr. Watkins at her childrens’ school and club sporting events: youth soccer, lacrosse, cross country and track and field. www.stjohnsmag.com 15

CLASSIC ROCK ICONS STYX AND DON FELDER LIVE AT THE ST. AUGUSTINE AMPHITHEATRE FRIDAY, APRIL 13, 2018 The St. Augustine Amphitheatre proudly presents two juggernaut icons of classic rock, STYX and Don Felder (formerly of the Eagles), live in concert on Friday, April 13, 2018. Tickets for STYX and Don Felder go on sale this Friday, January 26 at 10 a.m. The six men comprising STYX (Tommy Shaw, James “JY” Young, Chuck Panozzo, Todd Sucherman, Lawrence Gowan and Ricky Phillips) have committed to rocking the Paradise together with audiences far and wide by averaging over 100 shows a year every year since (yes) 1999, and each one of them is committed to making the next show better than the last. Founded in Chicago in 1972, STYX has the unique distinction of being the first band in rock history to have four consecutive certified multimillion-selling albums in a row: 1977’s The Grand Illusion, 1978’s Pieces of Eight, 1979’s Cornerstone and 1981’s Paradise Theatre. STYX draws from over four decades of barn-burning chart hits, joyous singalongs and hard-driving deep cuts. Like a symphony that builds to a satisfying crescendo, a STYX set covers a wide range of stylistic cornerstones. From the progressively sweeping splendor that is “The Grand Illusion” to the hunker-down fortitude of all that is the “Blue Collar Man,” from the majestic spiritual love for a special “Lady” to the seeth in indictment of preening, primping pageantry for pageantry’s sake of “Miss America,” from an individual yearning for true connection as a “Man in the Wilderness” to a soul-deep quest to achieve what’s at the heart of one’s personal vision in “Crystal Ball,” from the regal reach-forthe-stars bravado of “Come Sail Away” to the grainy all-in gallop of that rugged “Renegade” who had it made, the band draws on an unlimited cache of ways to immerse one’s mind and body in their signature sound. Don Felder is renowned as a former lead guitarist of The Eagles, one of the most popular and influential rock groups of our time. The bands record-setting compilation Their Greatest Hits (1971-1975) sold over 29 million copies in the U.S. alone and was awarded by the RIAA the top-selling album of the 20th Century. Currently Don and the Eagles have sold more than 83.5 million albums. A member of The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame since 1998, Felder served as a member of The Eagles for 27 years, putting his mark on numer-

BODY

ous Eagles milestones. Felder originated the music and co-wrote The Eaglesʼ biggest hit – the iconic, Grammy-studded smash “Hotel California” – along with fan favorites\ like “Victim of Love” and “Those Shoes”. He became immediately celebrated for his lyrical, signature guitar work on legendary songs like “Hotel California,” “One of These Nights,” “New Kid in Town,” and numerous more. “Hotel California” was recently voted the Number 1 best 12 string guitar song in the world by Guitar World magazine. After leaving the group in 2001, Felder also became a New York Times bestselling author when his riveting confessional memoir “Heaven and Hell: My Life in The Eagles” proved a major commercial triumph upon publication in 2008 and went on to become a New York Times best seller. Four-time Grammy award winner, Rock and Roll Hall of Fame member, New York Times best-selling author, amazing guitarist and captivating performer is the best way to describe Don Felder today. Felder has not only worked with The Eagles but also in both sessions and live performances for numerous music legends spanning the musical spectrum: The Bee Gees, Peter Frampton, Bob Seger, Michael Jackson, Boz Scaggs, Warren Zevon, Joni Mitchell, Stevie Nicks, Vince Gill, Stevie Wonder, Elton John, Paul Simon, Diana Ross and Barbra Streisand. Felder’s most recent release The Road To Forever features some of the best musicians and close Felder friends in the business including Crosby, Stills & Nash, Tommy Shaw (from STYX), Randy Jackson (American Idol), Steve Lukather and David Paich (Toto). The album’s single “Wash Away the Pain” reached #4 on the classic rock media charts and has been critically acclaimed throughout the industry. Tickets for STYX and Don Felder will go on sale this Friday, January 26 at 10am at the St. Augustine Amphitheatre and Ponte Vedra Concert Hall Box Offices. Save on fees by purchasing tickets directly from the Box Offices, have first pick when tickets go on sale at 10 a.m. and join the St. Augustine Amphitheatre staff for a special on sale party featuring free coffee and show posters starting at 8:30 a.m. Tickets will also be available at ticketmaster.com or by phone at 800-745-3000.

The Mental Health Wellness Corner With Diana Baker Brummer, CSW-RI Good Mental Heath in Julington Creek

Diana Baker Brummer, registered clinical social work intern, is a writer, advocate, and family systems therapist with over 20 years' experience working with children and families. Located in Bartram Oaks Walk in Julington Creek, she provides cognitive behavioral and solution-focused brief therapies to children, teens, and adults. With sessions available both in-person and online, learn more at GoodMentalHealthLLC.com. We eat healthfully to maintain our ideal weight. We exercise to achieve good cardiovascular fitness. We brush and floss to prevent cavities, apply lotion to reduce sun damage, and buckle our seat belts to keep us safe while driving. I'd offer that, just as it's important to nourish and protect ourselves physically, it's equally important to protect ourselves mentally and emotionally. The first step toward living a healthy and satisfying life is found in our ability to keep the promises we make to ourselves, whatever those promises might be. When we are feeling sad, or anxious, or overwhelmed, we don't have 100% of our energy available to apply toward the things that are important to us. Dealing with on-going or recurrent anxiety and depression is like have malware running in the background of our lives. Unable to turn it off, it drains our energy until our focus becomes on surviving the day instead of creating our future. Similar to the daily practices of eating well and exercising, there are steps we can take to help protect our mental and emotional health from normal wear and tear. Like a protective shield, I like to think of these tips as as "sunscreen for the mind."

those closest to you are supportive, uplifting, and positive and you will feel more supported, uplifted, and positive too.

What we focus on increases, so focus on what you want versus focusing on what you don't. Focusing on good and desirable things will attract more good and desirable things. Focusing on the opposite attracts...well, the opposite. Stay intentional with your focus. Protect your mental and emotional health, enjoy life more and stress less because, whether it's from too much sun or too much worry, wrinkles are profoundly unnecessary.

LIFE ISN’T ABOUT FINDING YOURSELF. IT’S ABOUT

Creating

YOURSELF.

We can't live a positive life with a negative mind. Become intentional about what you allow into your consciousness. Do this by limiting the amount of negative news you ingest, the amount of gossip you participate in, or the types of television shows you watch. Reduce the amount of negativity you allow into your mind.

We become the average of the five people we spend the most time with, so choose those people with care. Make sure

Their Clients Love Them!

“I can’t thank Nikki and Rosanne enough for helping make a life long dream for me and my family come true. For 30 years I knew one day St. Augustine would be my home. Nikki and Rosanne definitely helped us find a home that was perfect for our family. We transitioned from WV to FL and we had absolutely no idea how to do the transition. They asked questions about our specific needs, and made it a priority to find that perfect home for us. Not to mention their guidance in selling our West Virginia home. Everything I asked for help with, they were eager to help assist. Now we have the right home, and they helped make it an easy transition for us. Thank you for meeting the needs of our family and putting people and families first. We will always appreciate your help and support. Our move would not have happened without them both!!! A dream come true thank you so much.” Karen & Mark Mackley

Everbalance has two locations. The main studio is in Mandarin with a boutique Reformer studio in San Marco. It is the brainchild of Tetyana Boyeva, nationally-renowned Yoga, Barre and Pilates instructor. After witnessing the popularity of the low impact fitness chains offering only one-type of class, Boyeva decided to harness that demand and introduce multiple low impact fitness options (Yoga, Barre and Pilates) in one facility. Born and raised in Ukraine, Tetyana is a former dancer. She graduated from Kiev International University, Ukraine and began teaching Pilates during her time there. After teaching at multiple studios across the country, Tetyana completed her 200 Hour RYT for yoga, 100 Hour Power Vinyasa and Kettlebells certifications. She is also certified in Pilates Mat I & II, Reformer Pilates 1 & 2 & 3 and Pilates Chair. Boyeva is a Barre Master Trainer through the American Council of Exercise (ACE). She continues to grow in her technique and created her own Barre program – Everbalance Barre. Helping clients and offering the very best instruction is her passion and Everbalance is the culmination of that dream.

Tooth Friendly

Resolutions by Dr. Laura Sullivan & Dr. Susie Perry St. Johns Pediatric Dentistry

Did you know that the practice of making New Year’s resolutions began almost 4,000 years ago? Ancient Babylonians, when their new year came around, made a promise to the gods that they would pay all debts and return anything they borrowed. If you’re into making resolutions, might we suggest some that would be good for your teeth? Pick one or two of the below recommendations, your teeth will thank you!

Floss. Just do it. Think about all the food and gunk that gets caught between your teeth that can only be removed by flossing.

Start using a tongue scraper!

The residue on your tongue includes things like the cavity-inducing Streptococcus mutans bacteria, fungi, rotting food, and what’s referred to as “volatile sulfur compounds.”

Don’t skip a brushing. Brush at least twice a day for at least two minutes a pop.

Figure out what’s causing your dry mouth.

Your mouth needs a good amount of saliva in order to bathe the teeth and wash away icky stuff. A dry mouth needs some attention to keep your teeth at their best.

Don’t skip hygiene appointments.

For most people, twice a year is adequate. During routine visits, dentists spot problems before they get worse. Plus, that squeaky clean feeling after a cleaning is hard to beat!

Change your relationship with food.

Addicted to sugar? It’s never too late to reset your habits!

26

Go easy on the kombucha. If your other resolutions

include stocking up on the stuff, you may want to reconsider. Kombucha is a rather acidic beverage, and isn’t so great for your teeth in high frequency.

Drink less soda, energy drinks, and juice.

These beverages contain a ton of sugar, are very acidic and are empty calories! They’re not good for your pancreas, or your teeth. Go with sparkling water or water infused with yummy chopped fruit for flavor.

Been wanting to whiten your teeth? Go for it!

Being the proud owner of a beautiful new smile will make you want to take better care of your mouth.

Quit smoking!

This one is always worth mentioning. Smoking is terrible for your body, your gums, and your teeth. The most successful New Year’s resolution-ers pick one or two specific, achievable goals. Do any of these and your mouth's health will be better by the end of the year!

A Message From The Vet

Common Dental Problems in Cats & Dogs

With Dr. Kathleen Deckard, DVM Pets R Family Veterinary Hospital February is dental awareness month for our pets, so now is the time to think about your pets’ dental health. Dental problems are often overlooked because pets can have severe dental disease without showing any signs at all. It’s important to pay close attention to your pet’s teeth and seek the help from your veterinarian with both immediate treatment and maintenance care to help keep your pet happy and healthy. Some symptoms of a dental problem that you might notice would be: • Dramatic change in your pet’s breath • Swelling under the eye that may or may not drain • Root exposure that you can visibly see • Excessive drooling • Chewing differently than before • Nasal discharge or sneezing The amount preventative care that you do is dependent on what your pet will allow & how much time you can dedicate. There are many things that can be done that do not require a big time commitment and can be done with almost any pet. General preventative care for your pet could include: • Teeth brushing with pet toothpaste • Gels, rinses or wipes that you apply to the teeth • Water additives that go in your pets’ drinking water • Dental treats • Dental food When your veterinarian is doing an oral exam, sometimes it is obvious that there are serious problems with the teeth that need surgical treatment. Other times, the calculus needs to be removed first under anesthesia to identify all of the areas in need of intensive treatment. Some of the problems that can be seen in the mouth include:

Your other family doctor!

Deciduous teeth (baby teeth that have not fallen out) These teeth sit next to the adult teeth and cause decay and damage to the adult tooth if not extracted. All of the baby teeth should be gone by 6-7 months of age. Fractured teeth Teeth are most often fractured from chewing on hard objects. Many of these will have pulp exposure and can lead to infection & pain. Tooth resorptive lesions in cats (areas of the tooth are eroded and brittle) These lesions are very common in cats. No one knows the exact cause but these lesions are very painful and result in broken teeth and the affected teeth need to be extracted. Feline stomatitis (severe inflammation of the mouth tissue) This is a feline specific problem that is thought to be caused by an inflammatory reaction to the dental plaque. Teeth cleaning can help but many cats require extractions of the teeth in the affected areas. Tumors or growths in the mouth Gingival hyperplasia (overgrowth of the gum tissue) Loose teeth/Tooth root abscesses Addressing your pet’s dental health is one of the most important things you can do to make your pet healthy, happy and comfortable. Schedule an appointment to have your veterinarian examine your pet’s teeth to make a recommendation on either doing a professional cleaning or what you can do for routine dental care.
