Dear Readers With the new year comes renewal, new beginnings and opportunities. There are few blessings as amazing as a new baby and this year our family welcomed my nephew Sonny, just a few weeks before Christmas. As I gaze upon his tiny perfect face, I am in awe. Wasn’t it just yesterday when my children were this small? I’ve told my sister about how fast time passes when it comes to children. I’ve reminded her to value every second, even the moments in the middle of the night when she is bone tired and the baby needs her yet again. It will pass, those precious moments, and soon he will be walking, talking, playing sports, or surfing or learning piano! And then, before she knows it, he will be leaving for college. As we pass into this new year, may we all enjoy the moments, the blessings, the time we have right now! Happy new year 2019!

DEEP DARK RICH..... COFFEE St. Johns Favorite Coffee Houses! by Lori Allen Local Food Blogger

Even though we may not have those freezing cold temperatures and blistery snowy we days here in Florida we still do enjoy a good cup of coffee! So I have visited a few places and thought that I would share some of them with you. I have noticed that more and more coffee houses seem to be popping up all over the place. They are also becoming more popular with the young teenager which is a great way for them to socialize in a safe environment and they really do know their coffee!

Twisted Compass Brewing Co. 585 State Road 13, Suite 101 Fruit Cove, Florida (904) 217-0916

6

One that has recently opened is called the Twisted Compass Brewing Co. It is located right down the street on San Jose Blvd. It is run by some fellow neighbors who have full time jobs but decided to open up a coffee house just for fun! Lucky for us they did study up and become quite knowledgeable about what it takes to make a good cup of coffee. Their beans come from Bold Bean Coffee and if anyone has been to one of their coffee houses you know it’s the “good stuff ”. So many of their coffee drinks are based on how many beans are used and how much of that is diluted with either cream, or the various types of milk, soy, almond, coconut and even oat. They have really unique choices for their coffee, anywhere from twisted drip (their brewed coffee with a shot of expresso) to their Cortado which I had to give a try. A Cortado is a Spanish term for a beverage that is made up

of espresso mixed with a roughly equal amount of warm milk to reduce the acidity. The milk in a cortado is steamed, but not frothy like many Italian coffee drinks. (The word cortado is part of the Spanish verb cortar (to cut), in the sense of “dilute”) I had never heard of Oat milk before so I decided to go with that. My coffee was very smooth, had a somewhat nutty flavor and was served with a glass of seltzer to cleanse your palate as you drank. When you sipped your seltzer then drank the cortado you really got that rich deep flavor of the coffee and it had a natural sweetness to it so that I didn’t even need to add any sweetener. Now this type of coffee is not for everyone, but more for someone that loves expresso but wants to try something a little out of the box. I think you will really like the bold flavor along with the natural sweetness and just enough cream to make it oh so smooth. They do offer cappuccinos and lattes that are equally as delicious so of course I had to try a latte which is frothy and opted for the coconut milk. The frothy milk added just the right sweetness and it was prepared so expertly I really do think that you could compare it to any made in Italy. Twisted compass has plenty of seating and even a cute little sitting area. Some come in from the cold (haha) and relax with a nice cup of Jo!

ANTICIPATING DIVORCE? Top Tips For Getting

Organized by Michael L. Duncan, Esq.

Statistics show that, historically, more divorces are initiated in January than in other months. Whatever the reasons for this, being prepared and organized is necessary for the divorce process to go as smoothly as possible. In my experience – and many experts agree – the most organized spouse often fares better in a divorce. So, if you unfortunately anticipate divorce in your near future, or are in the early stages of a divorce that has already begun, here are some helpful organization hints.

1. GET FINANCIALLY ORGANIZED

Most divorces involve critical economic decisions. There are typically financial disclosures that must be made during the divorce process, so having your financial records in order will have you prepared for your divorce proceed as smoothly and successfully as possible. Additionally, taking the time to assess your financial condition and engaging in planning for your post-divorce financial life can also be beneficial. Specifically, this step involves gathering all the relevant documents related to your bank and brokerage accounts, retirement and pension accounts, credit cards, mortgages, tax returns, etc. Yearend statements can be particularly helpful. Provide copies of them to any attorneys and/or financial advisors you have retained (if they have not already requested them – and, as always, rely upon the professional instructions they may provide with regard to specific documents to gather). Place additional copies in a safe deposit box that your spouse cannot access.

2. KEEP THINGS IN ORDER FOR YOUR CHILDREN:

Preparing for divorce also means helping your kids through this challenging time. You need to plan out how to best break the news of your divorce to your kids and what you will do to support your kids emotionally during this time. If there will be changes that impact your children’s lives, maintain an appropriate level of sensitivity. Keeping as much order in your kids’ lives during the divorce provides them with the stability they need during this tough and challenging time.

3. STAY ORGANIZED AND FOCUSED IN YOUR WORK

Your divorce is a big deal, and it deserves your attention. But over the long haul, your career and professional work are also of significant importance. If you have been a breadwinner, you have to continue to put food on the table and make certain bills get

16

paid. Focusing on your work can also provide a needed mental and emotional break from the stress and strain of the divorce process. So, keep yourself organized and maintain the stability in your workplace or business.

4. KEEP YOURSELF EMOTIONALLY ORGANIZED

It goes without saying that divorce is emotionally messy. For most, divorce and its aftermath can be an emotional rollercoaster - one moment you are up, the next you are down. These powerful emotions - anger, distress, betrayal, loss, shock, numbness, or a combination of some or all of them – are completely understandable. These feelings are powerful, and some days are going to be more difficult than others. This emotional rollercoaster makes the divorce process even more challenging and, if not properly managed, can cloud your judgment. You want to have your emotions under sufficient control when addressing the important legal, family and financial decisions that must be made during your divorce. So, get the assistance you need to get your emotions under control. See a therapist or other mental health professional. Consult with a divorce coach. If you need assistance addressing your emotions in any way, seek it out.

5. ORGANIZED YOUR SUPPORT SYSTEM:

Divorce is challenging, complicated, and often seems overwhelming, so trying to go through it alone is a daunting task. You need a team – a support system that will be there for you to help with the challenges that will inevitably arise during your divorce. Divorce presents legal, financial and emotional issues, so your perfect team will include a divorce lawyer, financial advisor and a therapist. Others – such as a realtor, a business evaluation expert, a child psychologist, a divorce coach, etc. – should be considered for your team as well. Putting together the right team for you takes time, so plan accordingly. Also, don’t forget that you need a personal support team of those family and friends who truly want what is best for you. New Year’s Resolution or Lifestyle Change Tips to help you stay on track all year long

It is very easy to pick a New Year’s Resolution but to actually stick with it is a whole other thing. Fitness and health resolutions are always top on the list of New Year’s Resolution yet for most they are the ones that are the easiest to quit. You set yourself up for success, you buy your gym membership, you get your new gear and you are off; only to quit after 2 weeks. Well problem number 1 is don’t set a New Year’s Resolution start a lifestyle change this year. Here are a few tips to help you change your mind set and stick with it all year.

Be Realistic

Wellness doesn’t happen overnight, so be patient with yourself. Longterm results are best achieved through small short term goals. Want to lose 10 pounds? Aim for ½-1 pound a week. Want to run a 5K? Start by running 1 mile every few days and gradually build up. If you go all out and push yourself too hard, too fast, you may find it difficult to maintain new habits and end up giving up altogether or getting injured.

Find a Workout Partner

Unless you're truly anti-social, you'll likely do better with a partner or group than you would on your own. Having a “partner in crime” not only makes exercising more fun but it also helps keep you accountable, honest and motivated… Even better, research shows that couples who work out together develop a stronger bond.

Go out slowly

What's true for runners in races is also true for fitness newbies. Nothing halts momentum or crushes the spirit like a good, oldfashioned injury. Whether you're fresh off the couch or getting back into shape, start off slowly. Increase your mileage, distance, time, or

weight slowly, and listen to your body. Soreness is one thing. Pain is another.

Seek professional help

Just because you purchased a gym membership doesn't mean you'll actually make good use of it. A few sessions with a personal trainer can get you on the right track. There’s nothing like an appointment to get you through the door. Most gyms will offer one to two complimentary personal training sessions with your new membership. We at Every Body Fitness give you two to help you get started with a new routine. A personal trainer will help you establish all the good habits and technique you need to sustain regular exercise on your own.

Make a date with yourself.

You’re busy and life gets in the way. Assess your schedule and figure out where exercise can fit into it. Even when things get really hectic, there's always a little time to spare somewhere. Then make dates with yourself and stick to them. Your health and wellness are important. Make less doctor’s appointments and more appointments with yourself. When you’re overwhelmed by commitments, routine can help you stay on track.

Stick with it.

Experts say it takes about 21 days for a new activity to become a habit and six months for it to become part of your personality. It won’t happen overnight, so be persistent and patient! Don’t beat yourself up if you slip up. Take one day at a time. If you mess up it is ok just get back on track. www.stjohnsmag.com

New Year New You

by Diana Brummer, MSW Owner of Good Mental Health, St. Johns Fl

January is such a wonderful month. It’s full of the freshness of a New Year; the excitement of new goals to accomplish and the anticipation of experiences yet to be had. It’s a time to plan for what’s coming next and a time to reflect on what has already passed. But as much as January is famously full of hope and promise, it can also be infamously full of disappointment and frustration. Especially when the opposite of accomplishing your goals is not accomplishing your goals and the opposite of anticipating new experiences is not having new experiences to anticipate. Reflecting on last year’s goals and realizing you haven’t yet achieved them can be difficult. Even more difficult is setting the same goals year after year and never achieving the results you desire. What are your new goals for this New Year? And what goals have you rolled over from 2018?

do differently in 2019 to move past the limitations that have been holding you back? What tools and skills do you need in order to create the life and relationships you desire? The first step in any transformation process is to change the story we tell ourselves, about ourselves. We must change our thinking in order to change our lives. Until we can identify as someone who is capable of being physically fit, or a good communicator, or deserving of wealth, or a more attentive parent, we will continuously fail to be those things because we won’t behave in a manner that allows us to achieve those goals.Life isn’t about finding yourself, it’s about creating yourself. So, this year, let’s embrace our New Year’s resolutions with the intention of creating the lives, relationships, and experiences we have always hoped for. It’s never too late to become the person you were meant to be. Cheers to a happy, healthy, prosperous, and peaceful 2019!

Whether it’s to lose ten pounds, or communicate better with my partner, or make more money, or spend more time with the kids, we all have areas of our For more from Good Mental Health, visit our blog at lives we’d like to improve. What are you planning to GoodMentalHealthLLC.com/blog

A MESSAGE FROM THE VET WHY SHOULD YOU TAKE YOUR INDOOR CAT TO THE VET? Spotlight

on

FELINE ASTHMA

There are more pet cats in the US than pet dogs, but it’s estimated about 83% of cat owners do not take their indoor cats to the vet after their first set of vaccines. Most cat owners understand that an outdoor cat is at significant risk for diseases and injuries that would require veterinary care, yet indoor cats are often overlooked. It’s important to understand that there is much more to veterinary care than vaccines. The physical exam and veterinary consult are actually the most important part of your pets visit, because it is paramount in determining the overall health of any animal. The exam helps the veterinarian determine if there are any abnormalities with your cat’s heart, lungs, teeth, ears, eyes, bones, joints and internal organs. Cats are notorious for hiding illness- sometimes until the illness is very advanced. Your vet will talk with you in depth about your cat’s appetite, diet, bathroom habits, and behaviors that will often lend clues to help detect subtle changes, or if any testing or further diagnostics are warranted. A yearly exam helps keep you and your veterinarian one step ahead of many of the things that can cause illness and disease in your cat and can lead to more successful treatments and outcomes. Vaccines are important, and your veterinarian will make recommendations for which vaccines are warranted based on your cat’s lifestyle. Vaccines protect against highly contagious viruses that can cause significant diseases such as rabies, panleukopenia, calicivirus, rhinotracheitis, and leukemia. Your cat may not need every vaccine, but trust that your veterinarian is making recommendations in the best interest of your cat. In Florida, the rabies vaccine is required by law, even for indoor cats! Indoor cats should be on some form of parasite prevention, especially in Florida, where our warm climate is very appealing to pests. Cats can be exposed to fleas and ticks from another pet in the household, or you may unwittingly bring them into the home on your clothing and shoes! Deadly heartworms are transmitted

30

through mosquito bites, and we all know that sometimes those pesky mosquitoes get in our house, thus there is a chance an infected mosquito can bite your cat! There are several all-in-one products that your vet can recommend to keep your cat safe from all parasites year round. Cats are creatures of habit, typically don’t enjoy car rides, and often are not very social outside of their regular environment, so it can certainly be a challenge bringing them to the vet! The use of treats and favorite toys, pheromone sprays, calming collars, and other similar products can ease your cat’s anxiety, and help make the vet visit smoother. If you have a cat that you feel will be a challenge, let your vet know ahead of time, and they can make some recommendations to help make it easy on your furry friend. Cats will benefit from seeing a veterinarian that is felinefocused, meaning they provide separate waiting areas and cat-only exam rooms for their feline patients, as well as fear free techniques for patient handling. Look for a veterinarian that is accredited by the American Association of Feline Practitioners. Visit www. catfriendly.com for a list of certified practitioners in your area! Cats are very much a part of our families, and most cat owners want to do what is best for their cats. Overall, the cost of preventative care is often much lower than the cost of caring for preventable problems! Regular check-ups can help avoid medical emergencies, or help expose underlying diseases sooner than later, resulting in longer, healthier lives for our feline friends.
