SUMMER READING During summer the weather gets warmer, the days get longer, and things take on a slower and more relaxed feel. It just makes sense that this is the season of leisurely reading. Here are a few great titles to check out and one that looks like a promising Summertime page turner. Talking As Fast As I Can: From Gilmore Girls to Gilmore Girls (And Everything In Between) Lauren Graham Where and When to Read: Perfect for any summer activities, the pool, the beach, the airport. A fun, quick, and easy read! What to Expect: …when you’re expecting. Ha! Ha! Had to put that in there for those of you that watched the Gilmore Girl’s Sequel and were all, “WHAT??!?” Back to the subject at hand, Talking As Fast As I Can, expect to feel like you have scored yourself an awesome coffee date with Lauren Graham and she is sitting next to you sharing fun, interesting, sometimes awkward bits of her life, her career and herself with you. She starts pretty much at the beginning of her acting career (hotdog suit, anyone?) and takes us through the first run of the Gilmore Girls and then

the series Parenthood and back again full circle to the much anticipated and much loved Gilmore Girls Sequel that aired last Fall. The last portion of the book dealing with the Sequel contains entries from her journal as the show was shot. It’s fun and sappy and sentimental all at the same time to view the taping through her eyes. And you know what else…she also lets us know how she feels about those last four lines. Favorite Quote: While the book is written in Lauren Graham’s comedic style, she effortlessly sprinkles bits of wisdom throughout. Here is a favorite bit:

“I guess what I’m saying is let’s keep lifting each other up. It’s not lost on me that two of the biggest opportunities I’ve had to break to the next level were given to me by successful women in positions of power. If I’m ever in that position and you ask me “Who?” I’ll do my best to say “You” too. But in order to get there, you may have to break down the walls of whatever is holding you back first. Ig132 Everest Ln #3, St. Johns, FL 32259 nore the doubt and *Off Racetrack Road, 1/2 mile west of US1 • Promenade at Bartram Springs just keep going, keep going, keep going.” July 10 - July 14: Dinosaurs & Creatures

Only Love Today: Reminders to Breathe More, Stress Less, and Choose Love by Rachel Macy Stafford

Where and When to Read: This book is organized by Season—Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter. Each season contains short vignettes that are sometimes poems and sometimes personal stories. I like to start off each day by reading one of the short, but poignant entries and then contemplating the message throughout the day. What to Expect: Through her own personal stories, Rachel Macy Stafford, explores what it means to focus on simply choosing “Only Love” Today. She shines the light on the things that are important, relationships, connections, and authenticity and kindly shows us how to let go of perfectionism and self-doubt. One of the great things about this book is that it doesn’t have to be read from front to back, but can be read in any order—by topic or by “Season.” I suggest starting with Summer and reading an entry a day. Favorite Quote: “The world might try to tell you that you don’t fit in. I beg to differ; I think you are the missing piece.” What I’m Reading Next:

Camino Island by John Grisham I am excited to read John Grisham’s latest which is set right here in Florida! A 30something writer finds herself in the middle of a mystery involving the literary black market and a set of stolen F. Scott Fitzgerald manuscripts.

11 GREAT Years in St. Johns! Frank & Bonnie reflect the goodness of our community by Debbie Gaylord

What makes a community great? It's all about the people who live and work there and the sense of connection they feel with one another. Sometimes it is reflected in how they come together in the face of adversity. There is a small business here in St. Johns that is one of a kind; Rivertown Fine Wine & Spirits on CR 210 near Publix. What makes it special is the owners, Frank & Bonnie Dvoravic. The couple has been here since 2006, with 2017 marking their eleventh anniversary. Over the years, they have seen a lot of changes with new people and neighborhoods, and new businesses coming and going. Their consistent presence, friendly personalities, and all-around kindness have made them both well-known and loved in our community. Here is a place where hello and how may I help you really mean something. Inside Rivertown is an extensive selection of fine wines and liquor, with highly rated brands and favorites specifically chosen by Bonnie and Frank. A beautiful glass case along the left wall houses fine cigars, Bonnie’s specialty, from all over the world. Near the back of the store is Frank’s collection of Bourbons, over 100 varieties, which he has specially selected for his customers. Frank has been in the liquor business for over twenty years and during that time he has developed a passion for good bourbon. They also have a large selection of Tervis Tumblers covering an entire section of the store. Each year in honor of the store’s anniversary that coincides with Bonnie’s successful battle against pancreatic cancer, they hold a silent auction to benefit PANCAN, the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network. Community members are familiar with the big green bottle on the counter where customers may donate to this excellent cause. In 2016 they raised over $16,000! So far in 2017, they have already raised $7200!

6

Which brings us back to the topic of COMMUNITY. A few months ago, Rivertown was broken into. Both the community and Frank & Bonnie were taken off-guard. Property was damaged and money was stolen from that very special green bottle on their counter where they keep donations to PANCAN. What happened next was an amazing example of how St. Johns as a community came together in force to show their support for this beloved local business. Like the little girl who told her Dad she wanted to donate her allowance to Rivertown. Or, the regular customer who came in and asked Frank how much he lost. Frank told him it was about $400. Not long afterward the man came back with $400 - he had gone to the bank to get it. A local woman heard about what happened and started a go fund me account which raised over $1200. The response from the community was overwhelming and although Frank and Bonnie never expected it they were grateful beyond words. There is a photo taped near the entrance to Rivertown that shows Frank and Bonnie’s beautiful Riverfront home not long after Hurricane Matthew had blown through and left its destruction last fall – there is a rainbow shining over the dock and it is about the most beautiful sight you’ve ever seen. Bonnie took the photo, she said, to remind her of how lucky they are and how things always have a way of working out. Frank and Bonnie devote themselves every day to giving back whether it is through PANCAN or just a friendly smile to someone who stops by the store. In return, they have helped create the kind of community that cares. Thank you, Bonnie and Frank for all you do to make St. Johns great!

As we approach the sizzlin' Summer months, we tend www.legacyoflove.mypremierdesigns.com to wear less fabric, put less on our calendars, and even a little less makeup on our faces. While less is truly more, we should never lose the essence of our one accessory that goes with you wherever you go: your heart! With that being shared, I think it's important to model some classic Do's of a few Summer Soul Trends that should never fade or go out of style regardless of when a season ends or begins. 5 Summer Soul Trends To “Do” This Summer: 1 . SPF DO Apply this liberally to the skin. Sun Protection Formula...and for the soul? Smile. Pause. Family. Smile more. Smile at others. Pause. Relax. Pray. Physical exercise. Do a little less...It's summer! Enjoy the sun...vacation time. Enjoy your friends and family. Treasure your family!! Those 3 bold letters have multiple meanings.

4. DO be mindful of how long you stay so you don’t wear out your welcome, because in the Summer we tend to visit more with family and friends. An ideal guest stays for about 3 days. Anything more, as my Grandfather used to say, the company starts to smell like fish. Keep it fresh and joyful. Short and sweet visits are the best! 5. DO Pack an extra deodorant in your purse...and don't forget the umbrellas or keep an extra "hair saver" in your purse or vehicle. When it rains it pours. Be prepared! We can go from sun to "no fun" in 2.2 seconds around here. Regardless of your beliefs ladies, I think we can all agree that the Proverbs 31 Woman is one who models a fashion statement to be respected and admired: ”She is clothed with strength and dignity; she can laugh at the days to come. She speaks with wisdom, and faithful instruction is on her tongue.

We Believe The Best Marketing

.....IS YOUR STORY

2 . DO wear bring these important poolside/beach accessories when you are gearing up for the pool, beach, or your Summer vacation. Don't forget to pack extras of these timeless necessities... • A coverup of courage • A hat of happiness • A necklace of niceness • And all look best when you • add extra layers of love

Souls of the Beach

by Jennifer Yarbrough

Raising awareness and funds to support appendix cancer research and ultimately finding a cure. Kate was a wife. She was a pilot. She was a friend. She was a daughter. In the midst of a recurrence of a rare form of cancer, she said that “finding a cure for cancer is like finding one special grain of sand on the beach…the more help the better our chances.” In the midst of her battle, she called on others to help fight for cancer awareness and for a cure. Her husband, Greg Waidmann, carries that message on today as he, and other “Souls of the Beach,” continue to promote awareness and research through their non-profit.

Kate’s Story

Kate Schwikert Waidmann attended Embry Riddle Aeronautical University, played collegiate soccer, and pursued a career in aviation. Being a pilot was more than a profession to her, it was her passion. In 2012, in her early 30s, Kate was diagnosed with appendix cancer that then spread to her abdomen, her colon, and right kidney. She underwent surgery and chemotherapy and then entered remission. Sadly, the cancer returned in 2014 and she passed away that year. Throughout it all, Kate maintained her positive attitude, her tenacity, and her love for family and others. While in the hospital she, along with her husband Greg, arranged to have stuffed animals delivered to children at a local hospital. They also decided to start a charity to help bring awareness to appendix cancer.

Souls of the Beach When discussing the name of the charity, Kate insist-

ed it have something to do with the beach because she and Greg were “beach people.” They lived close to the beach and spent many days playing beach volleyball and jogging, and many evenings strolling along the shore. She flew with her husband Greg to many destinations, but her favorites were always beaches. She especially loved Scotland Cay, Abaco,

Bahamas.

Get Involved Souls of the Beach raises funds through the online

sale of positive, motivational t-shirts and decals at soulsofthebeach.com. They also participate in the “Color Me Kate” 5K started at Embry Riddle to support Kate and Souls of the Beach. Funds raised by the Non-Profit go to a Scholarship at Embry Riddle in her honor and to Dr. Paul Sugarbaker’s Foundation for Applied Research in Gastrointestinal Oncology (FARGO).Dr. Sugarbaker is a pioneer of heated chemotherapy used in the treatment of different gastrointestinal cancers, he was also Kate’s doctor. Souls of the Beach is looking forward to holding a 5K fundraiser in the St. Johns area in the near future. A MOLD-FREE HOME by Darin Magee Owner of Florida Property Detectives Home Inspections Most people only think about their heat pump when it stops working. A heat pump is not the easiest piece of equipment in your home to understand but luckily you don’t have to understand it. All you really need to do is change the filter monthly and schedule a biannual check-up and cleaning with a certified HVAC technician. The service life expectancy of a heat pump here in Florida is only 10 to 15 years. Proper care and maintenance may buy you a couple extra years and neglect may shave a year or two off, and worse, it may lead to mold growth. Mold spores are everywhere, both inside of our homes and in our yards; we can’t get away from them. In nature mold growth breaks down dead biological matter and returns it to the soil. In our homes mold growth can be detrimental to our health and can destroy the structural integrity of some building material. And unfortunately, our homes provide the perfect environment for mold. Mold needs three things to grow: moderate temperature, moisture, and a food source. Moisture can be in your bathroom, your kitchen or your laundry room. Moisture can enter your house through a leaky window or roof. It’s also created by your air handler, the indoor half of your electric heat pump. If it’s working well, it creates a constant stream of condensation and is internally wet. It is exactly the type of environment that mold needs to thrive. Mold also needs a food source and in your home this is just about anything. Wood,

paper and fabric are all suitable food sources. The proper temperature and food sources will always exist in your home for mold to thrive so what should you do? To avoid mold growth, you need to control moisture. Always use an exhaust fan when bathing or showering or when you’re cooking food. Make sure your dryer vent is free of lint and is venting outside of your house. Make sure none of your plumbing is leaking and that all of your windows and doors are well caulked. Make sure any damaged or missing roof shingles are replaced. And make sure to have your heat pump serviced and cleaned regularly. If you suspect that mold is already growing in your home, if you see signs of water intrusion or damage, or if you smell musty odors, you may want to consider having your home inspected for mold. A Florida Property Detectives’ mold inspection includes an evaluation of your roof, attic, plumbing, doors and windows and laboratory testing of air and surface samples taken from multiple locations within your home. It’s a non-invasive inspection for mold growth and for conditions that are conducive for mold growth. Insist on an inspection company that uses infrared cameras and moisture meters; if they don’t, you’re not getting value for your money. If caught early, mold is easy to treat. If it has time to grow the damage can be extensive. Be proactive in preventing mold. Regular maintenance and inspections are the recipe for a mold free home.

By Lori Allen A Local Foodie

Redfrog & McToad's Summertime summertime heading to the beach time! I know a lot of us like to head down 95south to exit 206 and the beaches at Crescent, St. Aug, Matanzas inlet for paddle boarding and even for some a little area known as the Triangle. So after we’ve rinsed off the sand and ocean and are in need of a nice casual Air Conditioned place (because we are starving!)Look no further. Just a few miles down the road (a left instead of a right over the bridge at 206) you will run into this great place tucked into a strip mall called Redfrog & McToad’s. This place looks like a fun sports bar (so no worries if you are a bit sandy)…but believe me they serve way more than sports bar food that’s for sure! The menu has so many darn things on it you want to try them all! So to start we decided to go with the sports bar theme and move on from there… we got the Buffalo Chicken Dip and something they call Chicken bombers. The dip was cheesy and creamy filled with shredded chicken. I think that they make it so creamy with blue cheese mixed in with the melted cheese. Scoop some of this up with a tortilla chip, hot cheesy spicy crunch! It didn’t last long. These bomber thingys are so unusual that I just had to try them. They sort of look like a chicken wing drum but all the meat is pushed down to one end. Then they marinate them in a special seasoning, roast them then drop them in the fryer. They are crispy on the outside and tender on the in and you have all these choices of sauces to choose from! Hot, Mild, Bourbon Glaze, BBQ Hot Datil Pepper, Teriyaki, Garlic Parmesan and Extreme. Really really good! The next thing that’s worth trying is their Great Chowder Debate 1st Place Winner New England Clam Chowder (or as I would say it Chowdah). The owners have this Bohemian/Irish heritage so the Chowder is not exactly like us New Englanders would make it but its Outstanding as my dad would say. The base has some kind of sherry/cooking wine in it along with cream and its super light and not fishy at all. There are lots of clams, potatoes and onions to give it tons of flavor and yes it does come with the traditional Oyster crackers (gotta have those!) I tried one of their signature dishes, their famous Giant Pork Fried Tenderloin Sandwich. They take pork tenderloin, pound it out thin, season it up and then batter it with what tasted like seasoned flour along with panko breadcrumbs. If I had to guess they probably double battered it, first with flour, egg and then the

panko break crumbs but whatever it is it makes a super crunchy batter and the pork has so much flavor you don’t even need a sauce with it! They serve this Ginormous piece of pork on an extra-large bun. It’s so big that the top of the bun along with the lettuce, tomato, onion and pickles and it has to come on a separate plate! I would highly recommend this with some of their Onion Straws. You can’t find super thin, super crispy onion straw/rings many places in the south. But you can find them here! If you are feeling like something cool and fresh give their Black N Blue salad a try. This is a really good portion and you get tons of fresh mixed greens, bacon, crumbled bleu cheese, red onions, and tomatoes and on top you can add blackened Chicken, Shrimp or Mahi Mahi. The mixture of all the goodies makes this salad so delicious and you won’t go home hungry that’s for sure. So when my son gets good grades he gets to have a special meal…their Lobster & Shrimp Mac-N-Cheese is one of those meals. Rotini pasta with Gruyere (Gruyere is named after a Swiss village, and is at first fruity to taste and later becomes more earthy and nutty flavor) and white cheddar combined to make a creamy sauce. Filled with shrimp and lobster then crunchy parmesan bread crumble on top. You have to be fast with the fork if you want to get a bite of that! I guess having that Irish Heritage you will also find Sheppard’s Pie and Bangers and Mash (sausage links and mashed potatoes) on the menu but I think their Fish fry is off the chain good! They use Yuengling beer (kind of an amber ale) and make a light beer batter with it. Then they dip a thick generous portion of Haddock into it and deep fry it. When it comes served to you all hot and steamy you sink your fork into it and the fish just flakes away and it is so juicy you can’t stop eating it! I personally love the traditional way with Malt Vinegar to give the fish that tang. But they do make a rich creamy dill tartar sauce that is equally as good. But if you want to go all out like one of our friends did try the Fried Haddock and “Ultra” Shrimp plate. They add their Ultra-Light Ultra-Crisp beer battered shrimp to the already delicious fish for the best of both worlds! Head on over after the beach or go down to watch a game. I am sure you will keep going back to see what else you can try!

A Message From The Vet With Dr. Kathleen Deckard, DVM Pets R Family Veterinary Hospital

THUNDERSTORM ANXIETY Thunderstorm phobia is a true disorder in which there is persistent and exaggerated fear of storms, or the stimuli associated with storms. Dogs can have a range of clinical signs from mild to severe that can affect both their quality of life and their owners. Fear can be elicited by rain, lightning, thunder, winds, and changes in barometric pressure. This fear may then induce one of more of the following signs: pacing, panting, trembling, hiding, salivation, destructiveness and vocalization. There are many ways of treating thunderstorm phobia and treatment effectiveness is dependent on the individual dog. The following are some of the treatment options available: Environmental changes Providing background noise (television, radio, fan, or white noise) Offering a safe place, such as a bathtub, laundry basket, or open closet Having the owner present Desensitization & Counterconditioning This treatment works using a CD of storm noises. You start with the least scary stimulus such as rain and gradually increase in volume and intensity. The dog is kept calm and relaxed during the session until they are no longer fearful. Sessions are daily for 5-10

in Dogs

minutes each. Classical Conditioning With Classical Conditioning, the fear-triggering stimulus (dark sky, rain, thunder) is paired with a favorite treat or toy which creates a positive association. These “storm parties” allow the pet to look forward to something very special when the stimulus develops rather than reacting in fear.

be given 30 to 60 minutes before the storm starts. These drugs can be very effective, however in some patients, they can cause excitatory behavior.

Capes & Wraps There are various capes and wraps available that can provide much comfort, including the Storm Defender Cape, Anxiety Wrap, and Thundershirt.

SILEO® is the first and only FDA-approved medication indicated for the treatment of canine noise aversion. It is an oromucosal gel administered between the cheek and gum. We have had great success using this drug, however, it can be expensive for a large sized dog.

Pheromone Products Pheromone products can help dogs with noise and storm anxiety. These products such as Adaptil provide reassurance and comfort. They come in collar, sprays and plug-in form. Therapeutic Medications Antidepressant/Antianxiety Medications If the storm season is prolonged, a daily maintenance medication can be given to decrease the overall anxiety of a dog with storm phobia such as fluoxetine and clomipramine. Benzodiazepines For panic that many dogs experience during storms, a fast-acting benzodiazepine (ie, alprazolam and diazepam) can

Serotonin Antagonist Reuptake Inhibitor Trazodone can be very effective and has minimal side effects. It can be used on an as needed basis.

Natural Extracts Zylkene is derived from a natural milk protein which has the calming effects much like a mother’s milk, is given once daily, and has not been associated with any side effects. Many other products are available in this category. Storm Phobias are a very challenging and frustrating condition, but with a multimodal approach, help can be found for those dogs that are suffering from this condition.
