WE’VE GOT YOUR BACK St. Johns County

CBS47 and FOX30 Chief Meteorologist Mike Buresh is ready to get you through the 2018 storm season. Mike Buresh and his family live in St. Johns County. So, when it comes to forecasting severe weather, he has a vested interest in tracking storms that approach the area. Mike and the Action News Jax First Alert Weather Team have been rated “The Most Accurate” for the last 12 years by WeatheRate, a national independent weather rating service. Combine a team of certified meteorologists along with the areas most sophisticated weather forecasting equipment (like the First Alert StormTracker pictured above) and you can see why more people in St. Johns County put their trust in Mike and Action News Jax. “I’ve always had an interest in weather, ever since I was a kid growing up in rural Iowa,” says Mike. “As early as the second grade, I was drawing weather maps and constantly looking up at the sky. I’m definitely a weather-

holic!” St. Johns County was hit hard in 2016 from Hurricane Matthew and then again in 2017 by Irma. Now is the time to begin preparing for storm season 2018. That’s why Action News Jax created the 2018 Hurricane Survival Guide, available for download on ActionNewsJax.com Inside the guide, you’ll find the latest evacuation zones, preparing your home before, during and after a storm, emergency contact numbers, creating your own hurricane kit and much more. Download it, and have it ready as a resource as we get deeper into hurricane season this year. In the meantime, you can catch Mike’s forecast on CBS47 and FOX30 Action News Jax, NEWS 104.5 WOKV, ActionNewsJax.com and on the First Alert Weather App. We’re here to help you stay safe St. Johns County.

Tumbling into the Future by Debbie Gaylord

Young Gymnast Emerson Hurst Recieves FULL RIDE College Scholarship It is safe to say the future is bright for Emerson Hurst, a dynamic 17 year-old gymnast from St. Johns. She recently returned from the Junior Olympic Nationals in Ohio where she was one of the top competing gymnasts; placing 2nd on Beam, 3rd on Bars, 3rd on Floor, 11th on Vault and 13th All Around. In June she graduated from Bartram Trail High School and has accepted a full-ride scholarship to Towson University in Baltimore, Maryland where she will compete on the gymnastics team this Fall. In this highly competitive sport that requires singular strength, fearlessness, sacrifice and determination how did Emerson reach this level as an athlete? The journey began at age 4 when she started classes at Starlight Gymnastics in Mandarin. She was invited to join Starlight’s developmental team program when she was about 8 years old and eventually worked her way up to the highest level team. In 10th grade she began training 25-27 hours each week at the gym taking academic classes through the Florida Virtual School. Emerson attributes her success to over a decade of training with coaches Vessy Danailova, Owner of Starlight Gymnastics, and Cheri Gillikin. “Being part of the team at Starlight is like being part of a family and my coaches are more than just coaches”. She says they taught her values like loyalty and how to work toward her goals. “I will miss them. But I’ll be back to visit,” she adds with a smile.

10

Coaches are an integral part dealing with chal-

lenges as well. Athletes like Emerson perform doublebackflips, full-twisting layouts, aerials on the beam and front flips off the bars. Fear is inevitable but overcoming that fear is a necessity. A good coach understand this mental aspect of the sport. When Emerson was first on the Starlight team she was terrified of back tumbling. Coaches Cheri and husband Gill Gillikin worked with her over and over on a double backflip, first on the tumble track with spotting, then moving to belt spotting until finally she was ready to do it every time without help. Today Emerson works a double back twisting flip with ease into her floor routine, and a triple series on the beam that includes a front-aerial, back-handspring and back layout combination! I guess you could say she overcame the mental block.

This past year early in the season she suffered

a shoulder injury caused by the repetitive stress of a difficult move on the bars called a Tkatchev. Rather than get surgery during the competitive season, she got the go-ahead from her doctor and waited until the season was over. This meant ignoring the pain, which was no easy task. But she was determined to be able to compete at Nationals and will heal in time to compete at Towson University. In order to keep up her strength she does intense conditioning exercises at Starlight 2-3 days per week.

Emerson said she has always maintained her

love of gymnastics and is grateful to her Mom who, before every meet would say, “go have fun!. She says young gymnasts should focus on working hard to improve skills but remember to always do what you love. When you accomplish a goal, celebrate it!

Emerson was recently tagged in the top 10

most anticipated incoming college freshman to watch on beam. She says she is looking forward to college level competition and helping her team. She will be busy studying sports management with a minor in business. Who knows, Maybe someday she will own her own gymnastics gym just like Starlight! www.stjohnsmag.com

Summer Reading by Debbie Gaylord

There are few better pleasures than having a good book to read on vacation. I am excited to share with you some really great books I discovered this year. Whether you read old school or listen on Audible, summer is the perfect time to escape into a another world. Each of these will make a great summer beach read. So grab your umbrella, a chair and your shades and indulge.

Something in the Water

Before We Were Yours

Circe

I read this last year but really enjoyed the mystery surrounding four children living on a River outside Memphis who are basically captured and put into a “children’s home” in 1939. This real life story is based on the kidnapping and sale of poor children to wealthy families all over the country.

Catherine Steadman The story of a couple on their honeymoon in Bora Bora who discover something in the water. What follows is a psychological thriller that keeps you guessing and grappling with your own moral compass.

Madeline Miller Change gears completely with this well written novel, centering on the Greek myths. The author explores the story of the Titan Circe, and those famous Gods and heros who crossed her path. It truly transports you to another world of magic, myth and mystery. I loved that the author is a classics scholar so she really knows her myths.

The Rules of Magic

To Kill a Mockingbird Harper Lee

If you are craving great writing and a deep story, re-read this southern classic about race, class & justice through the eyes of 8-year old Scout Finch.

KEEPING RV'S, BOATS SHINY & SPOTLESS

with Premier's High-Tech by Ron Whitington Detailing

In addition to offering more than 200 storage spaces, Premier Boat & RV Storage offers one of the most advanced cleaning and detailing services available in Northeast Florida. Premier uses a Wash-Bot, one of the most high-tech, portable and fully self-contained RV wash systems on the market, and provides other services including waxing, roof protectant applications and headlight restoration.

While its main goal is to provide owners a safe and secure location to store their boats and recreational vehicles, Premier Boat & RV Storage also offers one of the most high-tech cleaning and detailing services available in Northeast Florida. Owners Joe and Nancy Melville say that when they first developed the idea for their top-of-the-line storage facility, they also wanted to offer cleaning and detailing services to their customers – not only for those who stored their boat and RVs with them, but for other owners in the region, too. “Rain or Shine, whether your RV needs a complete reconditioning or just a wash, we have the indoor facilities to accommodate any size RV and to make it happen,” Melville said. “We feature the most advanced cleaning and detailing services available in Northeast Florida.” Premier uses a Wash-Bot, one of the most high-tech, portable and fully self-contained RV wash systems on the market, which features a commercial grade reverse osmosis (R.O) water that takes many impurities out of the water and, in turn, dries spotfree. “We’re one of only a handful that have it available in the State,” Melville said. In addition to several washing and detailing packages available, starting at $125, other services include waxing, roof protectant applications, headlight restoration, wheel restoration, and the original windshield Rain-X treatments for both boats and RVs. “Depending on the size of your rig, cleaning it and getting it ready for its first outing of the season can be pretty challenging and exhausting,” Melville said. “It’s a great option for owners who would like to spend their time doing something else and take Don’t stress about keeping one of your most enjoyable investments looking good and in a safe location!

Rain or Shine!! We have the facilities to get it done.

the hassle out of ensuring their investment looks it’s best.” Joe and Nancy Melville opened Premier Boat and RV Storage a little over two years ago just off Interstate 95 near the St. Augustine Outlet Mall to provide indoor, outdoor and covered storage spaces for boats and RVs. Premier operates under the protection of a state-of-the-art security system, very well defined and numbered all-concrete storage spaces with asphalt travel ways, and is also conveniently located close to several nearby RV dealerships that can provide maintenance and repairs. Optional metered electricity is also available at most spaces. Premier opened at an opportune time, with the couple doing a great job anticipating the need for boat and RV storage with the improving economy, the growing popularity in outdoor adventures and the increasing number of younger boat and RV owners. The first phase of the storage facility was completely booked almost immediately after it opened, and Premier recently completed its first expansion – now offering more than 200 storage units over 10 acres. “With all the baby-boomers and the younger crowd now buying RVs, we thought there would be a real need for a first-class, user-friendly storage facility – and the best washing and detailing services available,” Melville said. “People who invest this much money typically want to keep their units looking their best, and we can get them shined up for their next big adventure.” For more information on Premier’s washing and detailing services and pricing, visit www.premiercoachindoorstorage.com. Healthy Grilling for Your 4th of July Celebration! by Nancy Cohen RDN LDN Nutritionist, Feeding The Body Feeding The Soul, LLC St. Augustine, St. Johns, Jacksonville 904-687-0720

Grilling is part of summer, sports and the often the main event of backyard celebrations for Independence Day! Why not bring the joy of grilling and good health to the whole family this Independence Day and all year through. Heart health, weight management and cancer prevention are three important topics when it comes to grilling. Overconsumption of high-fat meats, calorie-laden side dishes and charred foods are all flag wavers when it comes to Nutrition. Consider Fourth of July menu to be full of a brighter palette of colors, choices and tastes. Use the cooking principles of Reduce, Replace and Substitute of healthier items to your 4th of July extravaganza.

Here is a favorite recipe for kabobs for you and family on the 4th of July.

BEEF KABOBS RECIPE

(adapted from Cooking Light Magazine)

APPETIZER IDEAS

Stick with salsas, veggies and dips, and small bites that are crispy and light. If it is greasy- then it is fatty. Make a crudité for the crowd that is sure to please and lighter for the tummy. Use cheeses sparingly and create delicious dips using light mayonnaise or yogurt as a base.

ENTREES FOR GOOD HEALTH

Here on the First Coast we have seafood galore. Turn your grilling memories into ones full of health, satisfying palates and slim waists. Incorporate more fish, shellfish and lean items to your grilling menu. Baste with juices, vinegar and lower fat condiments. Avoid breaded and deep-fried sides. Choose lower fat cuts of meats such as those that contain the word “loin” in them. Pork loin, tenderloin, sirloin…. Rather than traditional sausages and high-fat meats- choose turkey and chicken sausage products that are equally delicious, flavorful and often 1/3 to ½ the fat calories. Avoid burning or “charring” meats for these hold risks for health if overconsumed.

HEALTHFUL BARBECUE SIDES:

Veggie slaw, grilled potato salads, fruit kabobs, baked beans or bean dishes without the salt pork or vinegar based potato salads and other sides rather than their high fat counterparts.

18

INGREDIENTS: ½ cup reduced fat plain Greek yogurt;2 Tbsp chopped fresh dill, 1 Tbsp grated lemon rind; 1 Tbsp lemon juice;1 tsp kosher salt; 1 pound sirloin steak trimmed; 2 Tbsp olive oil; 1 tsp. ground coriander;1 tsp black pepper; 8- 8inch skewers; cooking spray; chopped green onions optional. Step 1- Preheat grill to high. Combine yogurt, dill lemon rind, lemon juice and ¼ teaspoon salt in bowl, stir well. Step 2 - Cut steak into 16 4 by 1 inch strips. Toss with 2 Tbsp olive oil. Adult Acne Myths.... Busted! By Kim McNickle, Center Coordinator at Skin & Body Center

Myth: Acne is a teenager problem.

A survey in the Journal of American Academy of Dermatology found that up to 50% of women between the ages of 10-49 reported having acne. Adult acne is more common in women than men. The prevalence in women both in their teens and adulthood can likely be attributed to hormonal fluctuations.

Myth: Makeup makes acne worse.

It is true, some products can clog pores and ultimately cause pimples. However, the right makeup can improve acne. For acne prone individuals, a powder based mineral foundations with ingredients like silica, titanium dioxide and zine oxide are recommended.

Myth: Stronger products are better products.

If you spent any amount of time reading labels, you know that benzoyl peroxide and salicylic acid predominate. The best acne treatments do two things: unclog pores and kill bacteria. There is no need to go overboard in the concentration of these products…a higher percentage concentration does not mean more effective. In addition, less astringent products with green tea and other natural ingredients may work just as well.

Myth: Facials only make acne worse.

Facials are excellent options to help combat acne. The trained estheticians can help determine the potential cause of the acne and most have a wide range of solutions. Those solutions may include LED light therapy, professional grade salicylic masks and a wide variety of serums and products to clear up the skin. Skin care can be complicated. The number of choices in products is extremely overwhelming. The side effects of some of the commonly prescribed acne treatments can also be downright scary. Scheduling a consultation with a trained esthetician can help you navigate the world of acne products and potential solutions and they can steer you in the right direction for your skin condition. Dermatologists are the experts at skin disease and should always be consulted when the acne may be atypical or not responding.

Myth: Breakouts mean you don’t wash your face enough.

When you wash your face too much, you strip your skin of its natural oils and leaves your skin dehydrated. The skin will then overcompensate by producing more oil, which clogs pores and makes acne worse. A daily wash with an appropriate cleanser followed by a salicylic acid toner and lightweight moisturizer is best.

Myth: Stress can’t cause acne.

Stress can create a hormonal imbalance in the body which can definitely lead to breakouts. This can affect men and women of all ages.

Myth: Moisturizers cause acne.

It may seem counterintuitive to slap moisturizer over oily pores, but this goes back to the over-washing principle. Dehydrated skin produces more pore-clogging oil than hydrated skin. So, applying a lightweight moisturizer daily will prevent your skin from taking hydration into it’s own hands.

I know I know a lot of people are like “How can you even eat that??” So I thought how are they going to make my prime rib rare in a smoker? It was not rare but was served medium rare (which still shocked me because I thought all meat was well done when smoked.. Who knew? ) But the flavor was just smoky enough that made you feel like you are at a BBQ place but not so smoky that it overpowered the juicy, fatty Prime Rib beef flavor. I was not the least bit disappointed that it wasn’t rare. I think it had something to do with the way it was smoked that made medium rare work out perfectly. The beef also came with a side of Au Jus

Summertime invokes images of lazy days, family vacations, and freedom from the normal stresses that accompany the school year. For many of us, we look forward to the lack of schedule which allows us to unwind, de-stress, and recharge before the commitments and activities of fall begin again. However, summertime brings with it a unique set of challenges. The consistency of a routine offers a level of comfort which our unstructured summer days tend to lack. For some, this lack of structure can cause stress and anxiety that would not otherwise be present. Whether it's arranging child care, budgeting for a family vacation, or feeling guilty about not "doing more" while the kids are out of school, parents have the compounded pressure of meeting their own obligations while enriching and managing children who are lacking a schedule of their own. For many of our children who deal with mental health issues, a break from school might mean more than just a break from their routine; it might also mean a break from their medications. While there may not be a need for intense focus outside of the classroom, reducing or discontinuing ADHD medication over the summer can lead to hyperactivitity, irritability, and behavioral issues. For others, children have been known to experience depression as a result of social isolation during the summer while being away from their peers. So, as we enter the month of July, what steps can we take to minimize our discomfort and enjoy our footloose summer days more? Adequate sleep, good nutrition, and intentionally adding routine to our days will increase comfort and consistency for the

entire family. Regular mealtimes, regular bedtimes, limiting time online, encouraging activity outdoors, interacting with peers, and scheduling family outings will all help to reduce stress and keep parents and children connected both socially and emotionally. Staying on a schedule even when there is no schedule creates the structure we all crave. This issue of St. Johns Magazine is packed full of ideas to keep your family entertained and engaged while staying close to home. I encourage you to utilize the abundance of activities, resources, and natural beauty in our area. Make a summer bucket list of all the things you want to do, see, and experience together before the school bell rings again. Then, enjoy all this beautiful community has to offer. Summer is for family...and for fun!

A Message From The Vet Hidden Summer Dangers for Your Pets Summer has several dangers for pets that people may not think about. Like humans, dogs and cats get dehydrated and overheated. Providing adequate water and shade are a given, but what about the hidden dangers that summer poses for pets? 1 – HEAT STROKE. It is actually quite common for animals to suffer heat stroke, and there are several types of dogs that have an increased risk for this. Breeds with shorter noses like Bulldogs, Boston terriers, and Boxers aren’t able to cool themselves as efficiently as other breeds so they are more prone. Active breeds get so focused on their rigorous activities that they don’t stop long enough to cool off. Heat stroke can happen during a normal walk on a hot day, during activity and rapidly if left in a vehicle without air conditioning. Heat stroke can happen before your very eyes without you knowing it and it is an emergency! Dogs have a normal body temperature that is already slightly higher than that of humans and during heat stroke, can approach 109 degrees F. When this happens, dogs develop multiple organ dysfunctions and it can be fatal. Signs of heat stroke include panting, excessive drooling, lack of urine, and rapid heart rate. If your pet shows signs of a heat stroke, cool them down by putting them in a shaded area and offer cool water. Don’t force them to drink, but offer it. Place a fan directly on your pet and put water or wet towels over their neck, back, underarm area, and groin area. Don’t put ice or ice water on your pet because it can cause more harm. Seek help from the closest veterinarian as soon as you have started your cooling meaures. 2 – OTHER ANIMALS OR INSECTS. Bee stings, spider bites, and venomous snakebites aren’t unusual this time of year. Insect bites can be minor or more serious, just like in humans. Monitor your pet closely for signs of a severe reaction. Bites to the mouth, face or neck can result in difficulty breathing. It is best to seek veterinary help if your pet has been bitten by an insect that results in pain and swelling. Snake bites are usually identifiable by the lesions they leave on the skin. If the snake is venomous, the bite is usually 2 puncture wounds a cm or more apart that has associated swelling, pain and

bleeding. It is best to seek emergency veterinary care immediately. The number of fleas and ticks greatly increase during the summer months. Be sure that your pet is receiving effective flea and tick prevention treatment. Also make sure that what you are using is appropriate for the size and species you are treating. 3 – SUNBURN. Even though pets are covered with fur, pets aren’t immune to sunburn. For dogs, there are specific types of sunscreen made for them. Human sunscreen can be dangerous since it contains zinc, which is toxic if it’s swallowed. 4 – BURNED PAW PADS. Cats and dogs have a hard time handling extreme temperatures. Dogs and cats are walking right on the heated surfaces with no protection. Try keeping your dog or cat on the cooler grass instead of hot surfaces like asphalt and cement. 5 – GIARDIA & LEPTOSPIROSIS IN STILL WATER AND PUDDLES. Giardia is a parasite that causes an intestinal illness with symptoms of diarrhea, dehydration, and upset stomach. It is contracted from water that has been exposed to the feces of an infected animal or human. Leptospirosis is another danger to pets as well as humans. It’s a bacterial infection that can affect many animals, including dogs, that causes kidney and liver damage. The occurrence of Leptospirosis is more commons in pets than it has been in the past. Leptospirosis is spread through the urine of infected animals (usually wildlife), that gets into water or soil and can survive there for weeks to months. It is preventable with a vaccine in dogs. 6 – DRINKING TOO MUCH POOL WATER OR OCEAN WATER – This can lead to electrolyte imbalances that can lead to vomiting, diarrhea, dehydration, incoordination and even seizures. It’s best to provide plenty of plain drinking water for your pet at all times during the summer and discourage drinking from these sources. While you’re out having a good time this summer, keep an eye out for these hidden dangers, and keep your pet safe!
