Woman: Strength, Power, Beauty, Vulnerability... Oh so many Gifts

Photos & Essay by Jen Shannon of Jen Shannon Photography {Studio located in Palencia}

Women can be their own toughest critic. Between the pressures of society to look, act, dress, and be a certain way

and the all of the time we spend taking care of everyone else, we wind up neglecting the person we should be loving the most. Ourselves. We constantly compare ourselves to each other and pick apart what we feel doesn’t match up to this “standard” that we’ve set for ourselves, which is impossibly, by the way, and as a result, our self esteem dwindles. We choose to always be behind a camera so as not to be seen in photographs. We don’t want to see and remember the “imperfections” we’ve deemed not worthy of being in photographs. It’s time that women stop holding themselves to an impossible standard. It’s time that women choose to exist in portraits.

I have the incredible opportunity to photograph every day women and tell their story through portraits. Women re-

ally are resilient and we never give ourselves the credit we deserve. Each and every woman I’ve photographed has a story to tell and it is my job to capture the essence of the person they’ve become through it all. I have clients who have gone through divorce from the person that they thought was their everything, clients that were diagnosed with breast cancer and became survivors, women who started businesses and have reached a point where they can finally say they’ve arrived.

Women feel good when they feel like they look good. When a client comes to my studio, they usually bring someone

with them; their mother, sister, daughter, best friend, etc. Together, they get pampered. They get to come in, have their hair and makeup professionally done while sipping on their favorite beverage and eating a light lunch, and then they get photographed by me. Afterwards, since they already have their hair and makeup done, usually, they go out for a night on the town. About a week later, they come back to the studio to see their beautiful portraits.

If you don’t risk anything, you risk even more -Erica Jong

A girl should be two things: Classy & Fabulous -Coco Chanel

A portrait is more than just a photograph of you. When I see a woman, young girl, even a small child, I am reminded of the struggles we go through during our transition to being a woman, even after. When I put my camera up, your inner soul comes forward. I see everything you don’t like about yourself from your confidence, to how you feel about your body.

Spread love everywhere you go. Let no one ever come to you without leaving happier.” - Mother Teresa

My purpose is that if I can show you how beautiful you are, not on the outside, but the inside, that you would finally connect with the woman you feel you are and not the woman you see in the mirror; the one you pick apart. The moment you finally see yourself, that moment is priceless. We need to take care of ourselves. If we learn to love ourselves, that will change our entire world. Not only is that powerful, but it is the greatest gift we could give to ourselves. The question isn’t who is going to let me; it’s who is going to stop me. -Ayn Rand

100 Years

One Day at a Time The day begins for Marie Lund with her morning walk, a mile each day. She walks slowly around the block with friendly neighbors keeping an eye on her. Ever since her eyesight began to wane her walks have become shorter but walk she must, she’s been walking daily since she could stand. Starting somewhere around 99 years ago. Born on March 27, 1916 as Marie Zalinsky, she was raised on a farm in Sagamore, PA, a small coal mining town. Unbeknownst to Marie at the time, she would live to see sixteen presidents sworn in, the Great Depression, WWI and WWII, airplanes advanced into commercial flights and the seemingly impossible became possible when man landed on the moon. Marie was a good student, practical and adept at math, she was advanced from 6th to 8th grade. Her Eastern European heritage (Poland) had a strong influence throughout her years. When she was 14 years old, just out of 8th grade Marie went to work in Philadelphia at the DuPont Mansion as a live-in maid. A self-taught seamstress, Marie became sought after for her work and sewed outfits for the clergy. After awhile, she tried to keep her seamstress abilities a secret so “people wouldn’t keep asking me to make things!” Her time at the DuPont’s ended after she married Charles Lund. She introduced Charles to the DuPonts’, he became their butler and they began a family. Her seamstress and cooking skills came in handy while she raised 7 children. Walking everywhere, she never had a license, never owned a car; there were days when Marie would walk for hours.

“Home Smelled like a Bakery”

Coming home from school the Lund children were greeted with the smell of fresh baked goods. Marie’s seven children each had their personal favorites. From chocolate chip cookies to orange chiffon cake, the list of goodies that she made throughout the years was long. When asked if there is a type of food Marie enjoys the most, a simple, “Food is food” was her answer with the added comment “some things are better than others.”

Unsure what to expect on this year’s birthday celebration, it’s doubtful that 100 candles will be put on the cake. On her 95th birthday Marie wanted to see what 95 candles looked like on a cake, apparently it was impressive enough to set off the smoke detectors.

Tai Chi for Marie Marie began taking Tai Chi a few years ago at The Players Senior Center in Ponte Verde. Tai Chi is an ancient Chinese tradition that is practiced as a graceful form of exercise. It involves a series of movements performed in a slow, focused manner and accompanied by deep breathing. Tai Chi has helped Marie, “Stand firmly on my feet, it steadies you and does the trick.” Her teacher, Dennis Sheils, had many pleasant thoughts about Marie; her tenacity, her faith and strength. “Marie goes with the flow,” he says with a smile. Though her movements are slower due to her eyesight she is an inspiration to her classmates.

Marie’s Advice on Living 100 years

Diminutive in stature and brief with her words, Marie had a few things to say about life and if she has a magic pill or secret to living 100 years. “Be truthful about everything you say. Then you won’t have to worry about what you’ve said. It’s always the truth”. Even though her eyes are clouded from macular degeneration, you can still see the hazel they once were. She never spoke of her aches or her diminishing eyesight and continues to read daily on a machine for the blind. When asked how it feels to be 100 years old Marie said, you just “imagine each day at a time”. It also seems that walking, and now Tai Chi has played a big part in keeping Marie healthy and grounded. Is there a magic pill or secret? “No secret” is Marie’s succinct reply. A true “Salt of the Earth”, Marie has lived her life with a steady hand, a strong heart and feet that are planted firmly on the ground.

Dear Minorcan Mama, I have three children, one in pre-school, one in 7th Grade and one in 9th Grade and I am looking for new, inexpensive ideas for end of the school year teacher gifts. What do you suggest? Thank You, Thankful Parent Dear Thankful, Teachers work hard all year to help our children learn and grow, so if you are able to, it is a thoughtful gesture to give them a token of your appreciation. I surveyed teachers and found that all of them appreciated hand-written notes from your child, the most. My suggestion to you would be to have your child create a card that expresses in words and in pictures, for younger children, what they have learned this year and what they appreciate about the teacher. Use the supplies you have on hand or purchase some nice paper and other art supplies and let your kids have free reign! Teachers also appreciate handmade gifts. Local mom, Whitney, told us via Social Media that she has her children make bookmarks for their teachers that she then laminates. What an inexpensive and easy gift! She also suggests letting your kids decorate pots and giving a potted plant. If you would like to purchase a gift, teachers appreciate gift cards. Another local mom, Bethany, likes to give gift cards to places where teachers can treat themselves because, as she says, “they spend so much time raising our children, I want them to be able to go get something or do something for themselves.” All of the teachers asked loved gifts cards, with ones to nail salons and to places where they can buy classroom supplies, at the top of their list. While they all said any and all gestures are appreciated, I would suggest staying away from perfumes, soaps, or lotions, as some might be allergic. And my bottom line to you would be to let your children lead the way. No matter the gift, the thoughtful, kind, gesture will mean so much to the teacher! Warm Regards, MM

Over the past six months political debates have been front and center in the United States. Just like other professions veterinarians have our debates as well. Declawing has been debated for at least as long as I have been a veterinarian. In discussing this debate, I would like to begin by saying no one wants to declaw their cat. All veterinarians know this. It goes without saying that all cats are born with claws. No veterinarian who really cares about his or her patients promotes declawing cats. It is a necessary evil for some cats to be retained in their home. I discuss how to train kittens to use a scratching post with every new kitten owner. I try my level best to not have to declaw any cats. Humane Societies, pet shelters and other groups maintain that declawing is cruel. I understand that this is an emotional issue. I understand that there are pet owners who have seen declawing done badly, resulting in their cat suffering pain. It is all over the internet. Those internet sites and the people who get angry about anyone declawing their cat are breeders of guilt. There is already enough of that in this world without laying it unnecessarily on other people who are only trying to live with their cats. But… Some cats, in spite of training to use a scratching post, do damage to their owners’ furniture. Furniture is expensive. The owner of every cat that is declawed properly, once they see that their cat is not in pain and walks normally after the procedure, is glad that they had it done. I am a bottom line type of person. I love my cats. I love my furniture. I love my cats more. Don’t get me wrong. If I want to own a cat, which I enjoy, I want my furniture in good condition. So, if a cat is ripping up furniture, how should a cat be declawed? There are three methods. The worst is using a nail trimmer. A recent study in the state of Washington showed that over 60% of veterinarians still use this method. It is awful and should be considered malpractice. It is the reason there are horror stories about declawing. The other two methods involve either a scalpel blade or a laser. Michigan State’s veterinary school did a study. On several cats they did a declaw with a scalpel on one paw and a laser on the other paw. Then they measured how much weight the cat put on each paw. The laser paws had more weight every time. I just did two cats in one family because their child developed cancer and would be immune-suppressed by chemo. They stayed one night. The clients said they were walking normally the same day they went home. I believe less cats are being adopted because of this debate. Sometimes declawing is necessary.

PILATES

Celebrate Pilates Day this month! Working with her client who is also a stroke victim

by Theresa Scully, PT, CPI., Arch Pilates & Physical Therapy

Many people still don’t know what Pilates is, and that’s okay. It is the responsibility of those like myself and Pilates students to spread the word and continue to boast about the amazing body transformations that occur with this innovative exercise program. But, to call it an exercise program, is giving it a disservice. The Pilates method has aided me to help so many patients. Sixteen years ago, as an orthopedic physical therapist, I began researching treatment programs that were successful in treating chronic low back pain and neck pain. I was just not satisfied with the treatment programs I learned from traditional physical therapy programs. I knew something was missing. So, somehow I came across the Pilates Method while researching exercises for low back pain and a small article on Pilates popped up. I wanted to learn more, so I purchased a Pilates DVD and the book, “Pilates for Dummies.” This book taught me the basic Pilates principles and exercises to apply to therapeutic exercise and activities in the clinic. I started to see results! My patients were reporting decreased pain and increased function. And, so my interest and commitment for Pilates began!

Josef Pilates’ History Josef H. Pilate was born in Germany in 1883. He suffered many childhood ailments and healed himself by studying anatomy and normal movement. He studied both Eastern and Western forms of exercise and movement philosophies including yoga, Zen, and ancient Greek and Roman programs. His physique was perfectly defined that by the age of 14 he was asked to model for anatomy diagrams. He moved on to become a skier, diver, boxer, and in 1914 a circus performer in a Roman gladiator act. Working as a “nurse-physiotherapist”, he rehabilitating wounded soldiers in WWI. He was then imprisoned as a German Nationalist in Lancaster, England. As a POW he developed his philosophy of “Contrology.” He was allowed to work with injured internists. He used the spring parts of the hospital bed to develop the first of many Pilates apparatus, Trapeze table and the Reformer. It is boasted that because his fellow internees followed his exercise regime, his camp on the Isle of Man survived the flu epidemic of 1918 that killed many others. When released from the camp, Josef spent time training boxers and the Hamburg Police. When he was asked to train German soldiers in 1923, he refused and quickly moved to America with the advice of his family. Josef opened his New York studio in a boxing gym that also housed many dance studios. Josef’s passion was working with boxers, but dancers flocked to his studio to treat stress injuries. Pilates pioneered a philosophy of exercise training that integrated the mind/body connection. He died at the age of 83 due to complications with emphysema due to smoking too many cigars! He was a health guru, but he loved cigars and whisky!

The Therapeutic Benefits The basis of the Pilates Method is core strengthening, utilizing nine principles that connect the mind, body, and spirit. The principles are: Breathing, Concentration, Control, Centering, Precision, Balanced Muscle Movement, Rhythm and Flow, Whole Body Movement, and Relaxation. Exercises are dynamic and performed in all body positions. Specific muscles are targeted and performed in 8-10 repetitions. Pilates exercises will strengthen your abdominals and back, improve balance, increase coordination, and decrease stress mentally and physically. Strength and stability along with body awareness and mental focus enables the body to move with efficient neuromuscular control. This optimal neuromuscular control carries over to all movements in life. Thus, treating and preventing painful movements as well as improving strength and coordination at all stages of life. As

a physical therapist, I can appreciate the emphasis on postural alignment and movement from the center of the body outward. As I continue to enhance my education in the physical therapy realm, I have discovered many concepts that anchor my dedication to Pilates. Mr. Pilates was an ultimate body observer, spending hours watching animals and humans move. He spoke of concepts and movement patterns that we know today as proprioceptive neuro-muscular facilitation, anatomy trains, myofascial planes, integrated functional movement, kinesthetic awareness, and much more. He didn’t have the medical training, he just observed and worked with so many bodies that he instinctively knew how to stimulate symmetrical and beautiful movement. As a therapist, beautiful movement is not about the aesthetic of dancing, as many people attribute to Pilates. It is the beauty of being able to perform hours of sitting at a desk with good posture. It is also the beauty of performing repetitive lifting, pulling, pushing, and twisting as a construction worker. It’s the ability to endure hours of cycling, running, golfing, and toddler chasing! It’s also very beautiful to see an NFL player increasing strength and flexibility on a Pilates reformer! What can I say, I’m a huge football fan!

Research Supports Pilates as Therapeutic Research is now marking the medical arena, giving Pilates substantial backing of its therapeutic effects. I have treated many chronic conditions such as fibromyalgia, migraines, myofascial pain syndrome, osteoporosis, aneurism, stroke, Parkinson’s, Familial Dysautonomia, and Autism. I have earned these clients respect and dedication to Pilates. I have changed their function so much. Of that, I attribute to the Pilates method and the drive and commitment my clients put towards every session they attend. Please reference the library of research articles available online at www.Polestarpilates.com and www.Pilates.com.

Pilates for the Modern Day Person In its development in the New York City studios, Pilates exercises naturally evolved through dance influence. But, now, many fitness and wellness professionals have brought it to the mainstream and has made it more accessible to everybody wanting and willing to work out their core and improve their bodies. Athletes can improve their game and performance. Individuals seeking weight loss, strength, and improved physical appearance partake in Pilates. Chronic pain sufferers and older adults enjoy Pilates because of its low stress on the joints. Medically complex populations can exercise in a safe and ultimately therapeutic environment. And, ultimately, Pilates is NOT just for women! A man invented it originally for men! So, as you grow wiser in your lifetime and want to remain healthy, active, and nonpainful, give Pilates a try. There is a program for every body type. It could be 10 minutes of mat exercises every other day or a rigorous twice a week reformer program. I guarantee you will see a difference in your body. In honor of Pilates Day, I have gathered testimonials. Please take a quick look at them on www.facebook.com/archpilates. Dress Up Those Bare Walls! HOME DECOR by Crystal Spencer Room by Room Interiors

A

dding artwork is a great way to dress up a room, whether it is at the beginning of a design project as inspiration or at the end to enhance or complete the look of a space. There are so many types and ways to display artwork: large-scaled canvas or framed artwork, metal wall décor, mirrors, groupings of framed prints, groupings that combine art, text/quotes, and three dimensional objects, artwork displayed on a wall ledge or propped against the wall. Use your creativity. There are scores of items you can hang on the wall that can work as ‘art’ that won’t break your budget. As long as it’s something that fits in with your decor style and makes you smile, dress your walls with it! Before picking up the hammer, follow these guidelines to make sure your artwork displays look their best. ֍֍ The focal wall deserves the spotlight, so attend to that wall first and dress it with the your best art piece. This should be the main wow-factor in the room. Don’t do the same thing on every wall. Mix it up. For example, use a grouping on one wall, a large mirror or metal piece on another wall, and an oversized canvas on the focal wall. Always leave visual white space to give the eye a place to rest. Not every wall needs to be a ‘wow’ wall. ֍֍ Want to know the two biggest art hanging snafu’s I see most frequently? It’s artwork that is hung too high and artwork that is too small for the wall space. To avoid these mistakes use my art mottos: ֍֍ When purchasing art: go big! ֍֍ When mounting art: hang it low!

34

Generally, artwork or grouping hung over furniture should be roughly 75% the length of the furniture piece (sofa, bed, table, etc.). The art should not be the same length as the furniture. Artwork often looks larger in the store than it will look in your house. So do the math ahead of time before you shop. (Sofa length x .75 = art piece length) Height wise, artwork should be mounted just 6” to 8” above the furniture piece or mantle. This keeps the artwork connected visually to the seating area. When hanging art on an open wall, the center of the artwork should be roughly 61” to 65” up from the floor. If the art will be mainly viewed while standing, like in a hall or entryway, hang it a little higher. When grouping multiple pieces, it’s all about creating visual balance on each side. Make a few sketches on paper and/or arrange the pieces on the floor. Take

some measurements and use blue painters tape on the wall to outline the arrangement. Always start with the biggest or most favored piece and build the grouping around it. Visualize an imaginary cross through the middle and make sure each quadrant is balanced visually. Spacing between pieces should be 2” to 4”, depending on the look you are going for. When tackling groupings, clients frequently ask, ‘do the frames need to match?’ The answer depends on the look you desire. If you are going for a coastal, farmhouse chic or eclectic look, then you absolutely do not want the frames to match. But don’t go crazy; pieces should still be coordinated. For traditional, high-end, glam and/or contemporary look, use either matching frames or frames in the same color. Last but not least: sometimes you have to break the rules. Do what looks best to your eye. It might take a few tries and you’ll probably make a few extra holes in the wall, but your art-hanging project will look great when you get it right.

Tools, hardware and hanging tips:

There are so many useful options available for wall hangers. It’s important to use the right hanger for the job. The size and weight of the art piece and the wall material are the determining factors. Drywall picture hooks are most common. They help distribute the weight around the nail to prevent wall damage. Purchase the appropriate hook for the weight of your piece. Heavy pieces, over 50 lbs., will require the use of drywall anchors. Put self-stick rubber bumpers on the bottom corners of the art piece to keep it in place. Laser levels are very handy when hanging multiple art pieces in a straight line. If you are a novice using tools and/or hanging artwork, just remember that Google is your friend; do some research, get some tips, and learn as you hang.
