Perspective is everything. Sometimes life challenges us and it is at that moment we have a choice to make - perceive ourselves as victims or warriors. Of course we all want to be warriors but sometimes it is a struggle to maintain the higher ground. As you celebrate Mother’s Day 2019, honor the complexity of the relationship you share with the woman who gave you birth or raised you or both. Like a tree’s roots and its highest branch, it is in life's complexity that you will find the depth that makes us human. Salute to all the Mom warriors who make our lives interesting. This month’s featured business is Coastal Wine Market & tasting room, in Nocatee. Co-Owners Shaun and Steve Lourie are the real deal, combining warmth, positivity and entrepreneurial spirit to give our community one of the coolest places around to celebrate the good life! This month Mikayla Lindenfeld shares her experience as a contestant in the Miss Bartram Pageant. Also, just in time for beach season, we get a sneak peek of some of the swim fashions trending for Summer 2019 (for every age group, btw) courtesy of St. Augustine Fashion Week, with photos by Dawn Wallace of Daybreak Photo - Daybreakphoto.co Plus our regular valued contributors Diana Brummer, Dr. Kathleen Deckard and Lori Allen share their wisdom. And, wow! That cover by Mindy Kerr of Nature’s Child Photography! Remember to vote for your favorites for 2019 (pg 39) .As always, thank you for reading St. Johns Magazine! And, thank you to the local businesses that sponsor this magazine and make it possible!

S

haun and Steve Lourie, Co-Owners, welcome everyone to Coastal Wine Market & tasting room in Nocatee with a hug and a smile. The couple’s warmth reflects who they are and their vision within the community. As Shaun puts it, “our guests are part of the family”. “We want CWM to be a place to gather together for a good time, relaxed conversation and personal connection”. “It’s a haven for the adults of northern St. Johns,” adds Steve with a smile. The couple moved to Nocatee from New Jersey in 2013 to be closer to family. They loved the community and saw an opportunity to create a gathering place for residents in northern St. Johns. Thus, the concept of a wine market was envisioned and came to fruition. From function to form, the well-traveled pair borrowed business and design elements from favorite places they had visited and enjoyed. Whether a guest stops in for a quick beer, glass of wine or a bite of tapas the experience is always warm and comfortable. That feeling was translated to the interior design and detailed in handmade wooden tables, flight boards and a barn door all designed by local artisans, as well as 120-year-old reclaimed bricks procured from New York City. Steve, who is originally from Boston, is a Sommelier and has an extensive background in hospitality. “He has a way with people,” says Shaun. He is the “face” of CWM while she is the wizard behind the scenes, taking care of operations. Together they make the perfect hosts. At 4:30 on a Thursday afternoon the place is hopping with activity as neighbors drop by for a glass of wine, a light meal and conversation. Steve says it is not uncommon for guests to strike up a friendship as they sit near each other enjoying fine wine and food. The next time he sees them, they come in together. The wine selection, which covers an entire wall, ranges from high end selections to table wines, with each wine displaying a rustic tag with detailed tasting notes. If guests are not sure what to order they just ask Steve for advice or try a flight board to test out a variety and determine their palate. For craft beer lovers, CWM offers the chance to try unique craft beer from local and national breweries. Their esteemed Wine Club is a hit with patrons and offers free membership and three participation levels.

Coastal Wine Market & Tasting Room

Steve & Shaun Lourie Owners of Nocatee’s Best Night Out!

“The couple’s warmth reflects who they are and their vision within the community” Shaun and Steve have built relationships with winemakers all over the world and host scheduled CWM’s Meet the Winemaker Series where Vintners present their wines and engage guests in casual discussion, complimentary tasting and special discounts. In April they will host Linda Trotta from Jamieson Ranch Vineyards in Napa Valley, California. Originally offering cheese boards and meats, the menu has expanded to include light fare. Shaun says they listened to guest requests for more dining options, and Chef Jody delivered with inventive dishes, such as a divine, from scratch pizza with Braised Duck, Prosciutto di Parma, Fig and Local Honey with Spanish Goat Cheese. The tapas menu also features paninis, spinach dip and a signature cheesesteak sandwich as well as other popular favorites all of which pair seamlessly with a craft beer or fine wine. When Steve and Shaun talk about Coastal Wine Market & tasting room, its all about love, and they are so gracious and thankful to the community for their support. It was a risk to start a business in a new community but they have been blessed to grow CWM with Nocatee. They will mark their 3 year anniversary with a complimentary tasting on Saturday, June 15th from 6pm to 9pm when they celebrate with patrons and enjoy the opportunity to give-back to the community. The next time you need a little respite from life, stop by the place where sooner or later everybody will know your name, Coastal Wine Market & tasting room.

Chef Jody Petronella

was destined to enter the culinary world in the footsteps of his family. Chef Jody’s Uncle, a restaurateur himself, started instructing him on creating the family’s favorite Italian dishes. He paid his dues by working at their family restaurant at first by becoming a dishwasher, working the restaurant’s sauté line and eventually taking over the restaurant. After working in other various restaurants, Jody became a Firefighter/Paramedic. However, the lure of the kitchen beckoned him back to becoming a Personal Chef and ultimately to enroll in Culinary School. Next, Chef operated a Food Truck under the name of Jody Cannoli which enabled him to hone his culinary skills and interact directly with his audience. He was on the right path and eager to uncover his next culinary adventure. And, then a fateful meeting with Steven Lourie, Co-Owner of Coastal Wine Market & tasting room, set him in his present position. Chef Jody states, “CWM is totally on the mark with what I want to do – a shop that showcases great wines paired with small plates and entrees to offer a complete guest experience.”

CELEBRATE THE EFFORT NOT THE ACHEIVEMENT

A

s another school year draws to a close, end of year exams loom on the horizon. Final grades, class rankings, scholarship opportunities, and college admissions may all hang in the balance. As parents, we want the very best for our children; the best possible futures, the best opportunities, the abililty to live up to their unlimited potential. We encourage, we push, we champion, and sometimes, we punish for performances that don't meet our expectations. We do this to our children because we want what is best for them. As the older generation, we intend to be good stewards of these young people who may not yet understand the consequences of their present day actions. We teach them to work harder, achieve more, don't settle for less... all good advice. Until it goes too far. Anxiety and depression often lie beneath a relentless drive to succeed. When we believe that we must strive for perfection in all things in order to be successful, we deny ourselves the experience of being human; the experience of feeling valued, cherished, and loved because we exist, not because of what we accomplish. Underneath it all, anxiety and depression are fueled by the fear that we are not enough. In our achievement oriented society, we learn to feel only as valuable as our last pay raise, or our most recent promotion, or our social status. Our children watch us incorporate these erroneous beliefs into our own lives and then they apply them to themselves. Our students feel only as valuable as their last "A" on an assignment, or their last invitation to a party, or the number of likes on their social media feed.

16

As the adults in their lives, we can model a different way for our children to approach the world. A calmer, more fulfilling, more purposeful way of life. It begins by knowing these three things:

1 2

. We are human beings, not human doings. We are valuable because we exist regardless of our latest accomplishment.

. Grades have never been a measure of self-worth nor are they an indication of intelligence. Grades are an indication of a knowledge gap which can always be remedied. Earning a "C" indicates that, of the total amount of information presented, there was 30% of that information the student did not retain. Grades indicate no more, and no less.

3

. We must release the false idea that perfection exisits. Perfection is a set of arbitrary rules we imprison ourselves with so that we can continuously strive to feel good enough, and justify ourselves when we feel we are not. (Spoiler alert: you are already enough. You always were. And so are your kids!) During this busy time of year for our students and families, let’s spend time celebrating effort instead of achievement. Let's intentionally value our children for the amazing human beings they are regardless of performance, and in turn, offer the same compassion to ourselves. The anxiety and sadness that may seek to invade our minds and hearts at times is no match for the grace that comes from feeling truly valued, cherished, and understood by those we love and who love us.

Milltop Tavern off the beaten trail

I

love finding off the beaten trail hidden away restaurants. Whats even more of a find is one that has been refurbished revamped and has come alive again. Milltop Tavern is just that restaurant. If you blink an eye you will pass its entrance which is right off of St. George Street in St. Augustine. Upon entering you will find a cool bar area, a place for a band and seating overlooking several courtyards. You can enjoy drinking, dining and dancing al fresco! A group of us girls tried several of their specialty drinks, the PICK ME UP was just that! Made with Baileys, Amaretto, half n half, coffee and all topped with whipped cream. So cool and creamy it gave you that “pick me up” to continue going the rest of the day. The other favorite was the PURPLE LOLLIPOP, made with grape vodka, grenadine, blue curacao and lemonade and came with a purple sucker. So refreshing and so fun! The food has been revamped as well. The peel and eat shrimp was plump and juicy. The pretzel bites were tossed in just enough garlic and parmesan that kept you reaching for more. We were just snacking that day but my mom and I went back for dinner to give the fried shrimp a try. It had a nice light seasoned floured batter and tasted very fresh. I opted for the potato salad instead of fries and it had just the right amount of mayo, not too overpowering that you couldn’t taste the potatoes. Yum! They had a limited menu during spring break but they will have their full menu up and running in April. So if you are in the mood for some great drinks, fun, food and entertainment and want to take a break from all of the hubbub downstairs…search for the Milltop sign and head on up!

Fun facts: The Milltop was originally a gristmill, built in the 1880s. It

first became a bar in the 1950s. The building was expanded in the 1970s and became known as Milltop Tavern and Listening Room. They were well known for their live music, the unique treehouse feel, and wonderful location on St. George Street. In 2016, this building required a complete renovation. Because of the historic site, the city of Saint Augustine performed an archaeological dig, and unearthed interesting items like pottery shards, a well, and even a two foot diameter gopher tortoise shell! After Hurricanes Matthew and Irma they are finally rebuilt. They were even able to salvage their Pecky Cypress paneling and reused it on the stage and bar!

Miss Bartram

A contestant's perspective on an time-honored St. Jons tradition

by Mikayla Lindenfeld

T

he word “pageant” has earned itself an unfortunate reputation. Most people tend to think of a “Toddlers and Tiaras” situation, or a bunch of grown women in ball gowns clawing for the crown. However, over the last few months, the Miss Bartram Trail Scholarship Pageant has taught me and the 27 other girls that participated in it exactly what a “pageant” means to us.

Top 5 of the pageant with the Miss Bartram of last year. Left to right: Maegan Ocampo 4th Runner Up, Alexandria Clemons 1st Runner Up, Caroline Balcita Miss Bartram Trail 2020, Karuna Doshi Miss Bartram Trail 2019, Mikayla Lindenfeld 2nd Runner Up, Alexa Machols 3rd Runner Up.

When we first started practices in October, there was a clear division among the 28 girls. We stuck to our own little groups, with some girls sitting all on their own, and we didn’t even know each other’s names. Speaking up during meetings felt forced and judged. As the date neared, more pageant-related activities came up. One of the activities included a dinner and a sleepover, which the majority of us were nervous for and a few of us were even dreading. The reality? Memories and friendships were formed that could never be broken. Between karaoke at midnight and waking up to see the sunrise on the river in the morning, these girls were finally starting to feel like sisters.

award named after herexcitement due to her unmatched at Timberlin The of the ATBservice Designers was Creek Elementary school over the of the past few months. contangious andcourse had everyone at the show in awe. Overall, the Miss Bartram Trail Scholarship Pageant instilled confidence in all 28 girls and helped them form real friendships with real incredible young women. Personally, the pageant has led me to the realization that, when given the tools, I can empower myself and help other women to follow the pageant’s theme and “bee” the best version of ourselves possible.

The next month was spent as living proof of the pageant’s theme: “‘Bee’ your best self!” Girls supported other girls, hyped them up, helped them pick their outfits for the pageant, prepare for the interview, and get ready for the big day: April 13th. We learned so much about each other that we never would have known otherwise, from philanthropic work to the reasons behind our favorite animals. Before we knew it, the big night had arrived! We practiced every day after school until late at night during the week leading up to it. Girls cheered for each other at the practices and helped each other through any difficulties that might have put them on edge. When the final night came, we knew exactly what to expect. During the show, there was an excitement in the air, and everyone cheered on the other contestants. According to Julia Perry, a contestant in the pageant, “I’ve never felt more confidence or more like myself than I did on stage that night.” Carolina Balcita was crowned Miss Bartram 2020, and the support she received from the other contestants after receiving her title was unreal. She says that she “...truly felt the bond between everyone standing up on stage hand-in-hand, and I think that’s what the pageant was truly all about.” Everyone was thankful for the experience and excited for the ladies who received awards. The most touching must have been the tears that were shed after Rebecca Kerr had an

Sea Turtle Nesting Season Begins May 1st by Kara Pound SJC Parks & Recreation

T

he beaches of St. Johns County are home to several species of endangered or threatened sea turtles. Residents and visitors have a special opportunity and responsibility to protect these magnificent creatures and their vulnerable nesting sites as they return each season to nest along the beaches. Sea turtle nesting season begins May 1, and St. Johns County officials are asking residents, visitors, and businesses to help protect natural habitat by observing all nesting season laws and regulations. Between May 1 and October 31, vehicular traffic on the beach is allowed between the hours of 8 a.m. and 7:30 p.m. In addition, all beachfront properties are required to reduce their impact by eliminating interior and exterior lights which may disrupt nesting sea turtles. Volleyball court lights at St. Johns County Pier Park will turn on at sunset and turn off at 9 p.m. during this time. Beach visitors can also have a positive impact on nesting sea turtles by taking the following actions while enjoying the beach:

♥Refrain ♥ from using fireworks and open fires. ♥Remove ♥ ruts and fill in holes left by vehicles and sandcastle building. ♥Please ♥ remove all chairs, umbrellas, or canopies from the beach before dark. These items are subject to removal by County staff. ♥♥ Flashlights are strongly discouraged as they can harm sea turtles. ♥Avoid ♥ entering sand dunes and conservation zones (15 feet seaward of the dune line). ♥Refrain ♥ from using balloons, as they can fall into the ocean and harm marine life. ♥Never ♥ approach sea turtles emerging from, or returning to the sea. Nesting sea turtles are vulnerable, timid, and can be easily frightened away.

Never push an injured animal back into the ocean. If an injured, sick, or deceased sea turtle is encountered, please call the St. Johns County Sheriff’s Office non-emergency dispatch line at 904.824.8304. Leave only your footprints, providing the turtles with a safe and clean habitat in which to nest and hatch. St. Johns County is grateful to volunteers, residents, visitors, and businesses for supporting habitat conservation efforts and keeping our beaches beautiful. For more information, please contact St. Johns County Habitat Conservation and Beach Management at 904.209.3740 or visit www.sjcfl.us/hcp.

A Message From The Vet With Dr. Kathleen Deckard, DVM, Pets R Family Veterinary Hospital

D

Canine & Feline Diabetes

iabetes is widely known as a common disease in human medicine, but did you know that it is also common in veterinary medicine as well? Just like in people, diabetes in our pets is caused by a deficiency of insulin, which is a hormone that is made by the pancreas. In some cases, it can also be caused by the body’s inability to utilize the insulin made by the pancreas. Cells use either glucose (sugar) or fat to conduct their daily activities, and insulin is what allows our cells to absorb glucose and use it for fuel. When there is not enough insulin to do that, the body uses other tissues like fat stores and muscle tissue to feed the cells. Glucose that cannot be used as fuel accumulates in the body, and eventually overflows into the urine, where it draws large volumes of water with it. Pets who are diabetic will often exhibit excessive thirst, excessive urination, excessive appetite, weight loss, and urinary tract infections. In uncontrolled diabetes, the body produces ketones, which are used as an energy source for the brain while glucose is not available. Ketone bodies present in the bloodstream eventually cause imbalances of electrolytes

and pH, resulting in a life-threatening situation called ketoacidosis, and they must be hospitalized to have the best chance at recovery. In both cats and dogs, insulin must be supplemented in order to treat the diabetes; this is usually done in the form of injections. There are several different types of insulin, and your vet will choose one that they feel will be most helpful in your pet’s case, and they will start with a low dose of insulin that will be changed frequently in the beginning of treatment. It can take months of trial and error to find out what will work best. Insulin works to drop the blood sugar to normal levels, but if the dose is too much, it can cause hypoglycemia (low-blood sugar), seizures, coma, and death. It is always better to start with a low dose and follow your vet’s advice about the frequency of testing so that we can find the appropriate dose of insulin without overdosing and creating a potential life-threatening emergency. Dogs will need insulin supplementation for the rest of their lives. Some cats may go into a diabetic remission, where their pancreas can improve its ability to secrete insulin, and they may not need long-term insulin supplementation.

Once your pet is diagnosed and insulin has been started, your vet will recommend a diet that will be helpful. For dogs, highfiber diets are preferred to help maintain regulation, whereas in cats, a high protein/ low carbohydrate diet is typically the best for regulation. There are commercial prescription diets formulated to help treat diabetes that your vet can prescribe. Diabetes can occur in pets of any age, but most often affects pets between 6-8 years old. Obesity is a risk factor, especially for cats, but other factors such as using steroids long term can also increase risk. Certain dog breeds, such as schnauzers, labs, and poodles seem to show a higher incidence of diabetes than others. Dogs will almost always develop cataracts due to excessive glucose feeding their ocular lenscausing blindness, whereas cats will not. Because older pets are more likely to develop age-related diseases or conditions, regular examinations by your veterinarian can detect problems before they become severe, so please reach out to your vet if your pet is not acting right. It takes some effort, but both dogs and cats can live long, healthy lives with proper management of diabetes

ocatee is still the hottest area for growth in St. Johns County. A coastal community, with a variety of neighborhoods, shopping, restaurants, and parks; it is truly one of the most coveted masterplanned communities. By the end of the 1st quarter we have seen an increase of new listings by almost 15%. Spring has officially sprung. The Median sales price dropped by 1.3 %, which is currently $419,500. Interest rates are back down, which is excellent news for buyers and sellers. The buyer can afford more house, and the seller has a better opportunity to sell, when the buyers are financially empowered. The 30 year fixed rate is 4.43 % and the 15 year fixed rate is 3.92%. Homes in Nocatee are sitting on the market for an

average of 108 days. When people select this area, they are choosing more than a community, it really is a lifestyle. Close to the beaches, nestled in Ponte Vedra, and surrounded by resort style amenities. Top schools, plenty of pet-centric parks, and neighborhoods to fit the needs of all. Move to Nocatee, and you might just need to invest in a golf cart. All the cool kids have one! Did you know the Publix located in Town Center even has special golf cart parking spaces? It’s true. Very fun. The hottest market growth currently can be seen in these three communities: Twenty Mile, Crosswater, and Del Webb. As Nocatee continues to blossom, more shops and restaurants are ready to make the move as well. Coming soon: Panera Bread, First Watch, Clean Juice, and Sherwin Williams.

Baptist South’s Newest ENT Physician

Mary Czerny, MD

M

ary Czerny, MD, an ear, nose and throat (ENT) surgeon, joined Baptist South in April. While ENTs are well known for treating earaches and sinus infections, there’s a lot more they do to help patients. ENTs treat a wide variety of conditions affecting the ears, nose, throat and neck. Dr. Czerny (pronounced “Churnee”) shares her thoughts about her profession and her personal approach to caring for her patients.

What made you want to become an ENT? Right away, I was fascinated with the complex anatomy of the head and neck. When I was doing my rotations in medical school, I felt a real personality connection with the ENTs I met – they were such a friendly, outgoing, nerdy group. I felt like I fit right in! Beyond that, I have suffered from seasonal allergies my entire life, so I wanted to learn how to relieve these symptoms. I can really relate to my allergy and sinus patients since I know what a big impact ENT problems can have on their quality of life. Finding a solution together is a great feeling. What’s your patient care philosophy? I value having an open dialogue that allows me to understand my patients’ main concern. My job is not only to understand the main complaint, but also to understand why it’s bothering them. One patient with a sore throat may be seeking relief from the pain, but another may be really anxious because they have a family member with throat cancer. I like to educate my patients so they leave with more than just a treatment plan -- they also have knowledge about their condition. What’s something that most people don’t know about ENTs? Every ENT is a trained surgeon – I completed a five-year surgical residency. I knew early on that I wanted to be a surgeon because it’s a hands-on opportunity to improve a patient’s quality of life, often in a rapid manner. Some of the most common procedures I do are tonsillectomies, sinus surgeries, and removing growths in the neck. I love having a balance of office time with patients and performing surgery when conservative measures don’t provide relief. It’s very gratifying to see a patient’s symptoms vanish after a procedure. What made you want to live in Jacksonville? After years of experiencing cold winters in Missouri, my family and I were ready for a warmer climate. We’ve always loved the ocean, so being close to the beach was a big draw for us. My husband and I are looking forward to many warm, sunny days with our two children.

It Isn’t So Much The HEAT… As The HUMIDITY! Humidity is an invisible force, that’s easy to overlook. Yet, it’s essential to our comfort and health at home and at work. As humans, we’re designed to live within a certain range of environmental conditions. Too HOT, too COLD, too WET, too DRY… our bodies can’t handle it and don’t like it. Too hot or too cold are easy to recognize, because you can literally feel extreme temperatures. Too hot or too cold are also relatively easy to resolve with a simple adjustment of your thermostat.

We Thrive Within a Certain Humidity Range

Too dry (not a Florida problem), and our bodies get dehydrated. Too wet/ humid (definitely a Florida problem), and we encounter risks like bacteria growth and getting overheated. Too much humidity is UNCOMFORTABLE and our bodies are less efficient getting through our daily tasks.

Hot & Humid

Living in Florida, which is technically defined as a “hot, humid” climate zone from an engineering perspective, we face the daily challenge of battling the environment. Florida suffers from excess indoor humidity year-round. In fact, it may even spike in winter months when it’s too cool for our thermostat to call for AC. Our central air conditioning technically is a dehumidifier of sorts… BUT, only when it’s actually running. Unfortunately, many systems are actually OVERSIZED (too big), so they end up running less, and as a result dehumidifying less too. Then, there’s mild days when the temperature is great, but the humidity is higher, like rainy days when the AC won’t turn on at all. If the AC does not run, it cannot dehumidify!

The Impacts

Short term, high humidity is purely a DISCOMFORT issue. You can feel it in the form of “sweat” or “stickiness”. Like the title says, “It’s not so much the heat, as the humidity”. Too much humidity makes you “feel” warmer, with that sticky, clammy sensation. You know the one! Long term, high humidity can lead to infections, disease, and compromise the integrity of your home or facility. It’s often harder for us to realize that humidity can be harmful too, not just uncomfortable. The impact of humidity – and the mold & mildew that thrives in a high humidity environment – will affect your health and wallet. Dust mites love high humidity, and are widely known to aggravate our al-

lergies and asthma. Even worse, humidity is a breeding ground for microbials like mold, mildew, and other nasty things. Microbials can be dangerous, making you sick and reducing your immune system, increasing your susceptibility to sicknesses. Certain nasties can be especially dangerous and even deadly if they enter our bodies.

More Extreme = More Problems

Mold and other microbial contaminants can penetrate porous surfaces and materials like dry wall, wood, HVAC insulation, duct board, etc. This level of contamination not only looks unsightly, it can also compromise the strength and integrity of our homes. Living in a hot, humid climate, many of us have mold or mildew growing; we don’t have to see it to have it. However, if we can see it, it’s most likely at a dangerous point, and needs to be addressed ASAP. In most situations, we recommend Relative Humidity at 50% or lower. For a lot of us Floridians, that means investing in DEHUMIDIFICATION.

Common Problems

•Condensation on cool surfaces like ductwork, HVAC vents, air handler cabinets, water lines, etc. •Microbial growth from “standing water” that collects from condensation, which helps the nasties thrive •Water staining around “cool junctures” that penetrate ceilings, etc like around HVAC supply vents •Allergy & asthma aggravation from system airflow circulating inside air handler and ductwork every time your AC turns on, that are contaminated with microbials •Warping, rotting building assemblies that can be costly to repair Lowering the thermostat to a lower setpoint so that the AC runs longer is known as “overcooling”. While this may seem like a potential solution, it is both costly and ineffective. In some cases, it can actually make the problem worse!

The Solution

A whole-home DEHUMIDIFIER can be installed either by itself or attached to your HVAC system to resolve high humidity problems. A central system will protect your furnishings and belongings from warpage, rot, mold, mildew, etc. It will also reduce growth of allergens like mold, mildew, and dust mites. Additionally, a dehumidifier can help eliminate musty smells too.
