Dear Reader, True story. I am adopted and recently met my birth father - who is 100% Irish American - for the first time! It explained a lot about my penchant for a great story, guinness beer and good pub food. This past summer I had the pleasure of meeting his entire family. We met at a place up in New York where we listened to my father sing and play the guitar (he is a musician). There was a lot of laughter, dancing and a joy for life that night. I am truly grateful for my Irish heritage. When I heard Fionn MacCool’s was coming to St. Johns in December, I was over the moon! I knew exactly where I would want to bring my father for dinner when he visits here in the Spring. Please enjoy our feature story about the people behind Fionn MacCool’s and look forward to next month when Lori Allen gives us the scoop on the food. When you pass through the giant medieval-esque doors of Fionn MacCool’s you enter another world. Dark ambiance, a finely crafted wooden bar (from Ireland), and the smell of comfort foods like shepherd's pie and fish and chips defines the Fionn MacCool experience. It is the quintessential Irish pub and restaurant with delicious food made from scratch and a warm welcoming atmosphere where Guinness flows freely. The good news is Fionn MacCool’s will open a new 150-seat Nocatee Location in December at the Shoppes of St. Johns Oaks (145 Hilden Road). St. Johns magazine wanted to learn more about the people behind Fionn MacCool’s so we spoke with owner Amy McNulty, who runs the business with her brother Joe Moye and General Manager Paul McMullan. Amy had always wanted to open an authentic Irish pub. A place that would reflect her love for Irish culture and her Irish ancestry. “Our great grandparents were from County Cork. As natives of Jacksonville we wanted a genuine and authentic
Irish experience at home”. They chose to expand in St. Johns county because of the tremendous growth in the area. After visiting Ireland numerous times, even running in the Dublin Marathon, she had experienced a variety of pubs and done her research. She was ready to make the dream a reality and opened Fionn MacCool’s in 2005. She says, “Fionn’s is a genuine Irish Pub. The word pub is derived from “Public House”, originally a place for everyone to meet and relax after a long day’s work. We have great food, great service, live music, and plenty of pints and whiskey! We want everyone to feel welcome and comfortable, as if you were coming into our home” Another part of what gives Fionn MacCool’s is authenticity may be the fact that furnishings, bar and cabinetry are built in Ireland. “We want people in St. Johns to know that Fionn MacCool’s is great for Everybody. “Its a family place, a pub and a restaurant where any age is welcome from little kids to retirees and everyone in between," Joe added,
General Manager Paul McMullen has been in the restaurant business his entire adult life, joining Fionn MacCool’s twelve years ago. “I treat each day like I am throwing a party at my house and I want every guest to be happy they came and had an exceptional time”. A feeling of hospitality definitely permeates the atmosphere. They strive to make people feel special and happy. Paul recalled once when a young navy guy asked them to help him with his marriage proposal. “He came to me the week before and wanted to propose on our river patio and wanted to film it but the camera had to be hidden so she wouldn't get tipped off. So we had a decoy table set up with people hiding behind menus with the camera a few tables away. He wanted a special song to be played so we had a portable radio for the ready too. He got up went inside like he was going to the restroom and we set everything in motion. He knocked on the window from inside. When he walked back out on the patio we started the song and camera he got down on one knee and proposed it was very romantic for a young guy. His girl said yes and we had it all on film. We popped open a bottle of champagne for them. As far as we know they are happily married to this day.” What would an Irish pub be without a good ancient tale behind it? The restaurant is named for Fionn mac Cumhaill or “Finn McCool” who is known for being a great warrior in Irish myths. He was the greatest leader of the Fianna, an elite military clan responsible for the protection of the High King of Ireland. Fionn implemented a code of honor into the Fianna; which had a reputation for being somewhat unruly. Another legend includes Fionn as a giant, creating the Giant’s Causeway, a peculiar series of volcanic rock formations along the coast of Ireland. He did this to challenge a Scottish giant to a fight and allow passage from Scotland to Ireland. Holiday Season Dining Ideas from our Local Foodie by Lori Allen
It’s that time of year and everyone likes to go out to dinner or drinks with family and friends. Here’s a small list of some interesting but always good for the holiday places to try. Copelands New Orleans style restaurant that has been around for years and there is a reason. The food! This is not your average rice and bean kind of place. You can get etouffée, gumbo and crawfish along with a tons of other dishes, steaks, fish, chicken the menu is endless. Try the brunch filled with all kinds of New Orleans inspired specialties. The specialty drinks are so fun and the atmosphere is cozy and friendly. Maggianos Enjoy the hustle and bustle of the Christmas shoppers while you sit back and relax to some creamy pasta or some light bruschetta with a martini or Peroni. The Christmas tree is always so pretty and it’s so festive around the holidays. It’s a fun place to rest and hang out in between dashing thru the stores looking for those last minute deals. Caps on the water If you are looking for a Florida Christmas night out this is the place to go. Aunt Kates is a great place to take your out of town guests for something a little more casual but with that great Florida Flair. Steaming hot shrimp and oysters are a favorite as well as their fresh fried or grilled seafood. They also have some unique sandwiches and lots of dishes with the south in mind, fried green tomatoes, famous Menorcan Clam Chowder and a soft-shelled crab sandwiches to name a few. A great place to visit after a nice walk on the beach. The reef This restaurant is known for its fantastic view and awesome Sunday Brunch. From their sweet juicy buttery crab legs to their endless mimosas and countless of other buffet items if that doesn’t scream it’s the holiday season I know what does? They also have a great selection of entrees for lunch and dinner and even small plates if you want to try several of their menu items to share. Community Nutcracker
Time honored tradition impacts Northeast Florida and charities for more than 25 years by Ali Lindenfeld
Since 1992, The Community Nutcracker has been delighting audiences of all ages with its annual holiday production of the Nutcracker Ballet. Performed by more than 4,300 local and 36 professionals in 95 live, full-length performances, the Community Nutcracker brings out the whimsical culture of Christmas through childlike imagination and artistry, but it is the impact to the community that many may be unfamiliar with. In the past 25 years, more than $600,000 has been donated to various nonprofits in Northeast Florida, including its main beneficiary for the past twelve years, Dreams Come True of Jacksonville. Through their partnership, more than 50 local children have seen their dreams fulfilled from the proceeds raised during the annual production. Dreams have ranged from weeklong trips to Walt Disney World to tropical getaways to shopping adventures and even sailing the high seas. “For more than 33 years we have been able to bring hope and joy to local children and their families because of our community partners,” stated Andrea Siracusa, Senior Manager for Dreams Come True. “It is through the generosity and talents of volunteers with the Community Nutcracker that Jacksonville is given the opportunity to enjoy a beautiful, artistic production, while knowing that an investment is being made back into the community.” As part of their dedication to Northeast Florida, over 2,000 free tickets are issued city-wide each year through the Community Nutcracker. More than 4,000 school children from
area schools are also provided the opportunity to see the performance during one of two school productions. to Benefit Epilepsy Foundation of Florida
Event will raise epilepsy awareness, funds during National Epilepsy Awareness Month by Jennifer Dunn
The 4th Annual St. Johns Professional Alliance (SJPA) Chili Cook-Off to benefit the Epilepsy Foundation of Florida will take place Saturday, November 18, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., at Faith Community Church (3450 County Road 210, St. Johns, FL 32259). It will take place during National Epilepsy Awareness Month, a period dedicated to educating individuals and communities about epilepsy. For the past four years, the St. Johns Professional Alliance has hosted this event to raise epilepsy awareness and funds to support those affected by epilepsy and other seizure disorders. Spearheaded by Jeff Sedlitz, president of the SJPA, and his wife Dawn, the event is inspired by their grandson, Steven, who had his first seizure when he was one-dayold. He has undergone five brain surgeries in an attempt to eliminate his seizures; at one point, he was having more than 200 seizures a day. Now seven-years-old, Steven is still on medication and continues to have seizures daily. Although his seizures have not been eliminated, yet, his seizures have been minimized to roughly 10 to 20 a day. “Since the birth and diagnosis of my grandson, Steven, I have learned so much and wanted to do something to educate people about epilepsy,” said Jeff Sedlitz. “I want people to understand that it is not something to be ashamed of and hidden from society. I want to connect people so that those affected have a resource and a community that understands what they are going through. And, I want to raise money to allow the Epilepsy Foundation of Florida to continue to support those individuals and families dealing with epilepsy on a daily basis.” Epilepsy is a common neurological condition that one in 26 people will
be diagnosed with at some point in their lives. The diagnosis is given when a person experiences two or more seizures that cannot be attributed to another cause. It is a disorder more people live with than autism, Parkinson’s disease, multiple sclerosis and cerebral palsy – combined. During this year’s event, Chili Cook-Off participants will bring their best recipes and ingredients, and their mild to scorching creations will be available to attendees for sampling and judging. Chili Cook-Off winners will be named in three categories: Best 5-Alarm Chili, Most Unique Chili, and Best All Around Chili. Additionally, a prize will be awarded to the individual or family who is best dressed in a contest the SJPA calls “Show off Your Purple.” Purple is the designated color for epilepsy awareness and everyone is encouraged to wear it as a show of support. The popular, fun-filled family event will also feature live music, food trucks, a silent auction, raffles, and a ‘kid zone’ with activities for children. About 42,000 people die each year in the U.S. due to seizures from epilepsy and related causes. The EFOF provides numerous services to individuals and families, such as advocacy and counseling, education and prevention, direct medical and neuropsychological services, as well as research and other programs regardless of financial situation or socioeconomic status. Jaw, head, and neck pain is so intruding on a busy family life. The dentist may be the first visit to treat jaw pain, but a better alternative may be a visit to a chiropractor, physical therapist, and a Pilates reformer! According to Dr. Alan of Axiom Wellness in Mandarin, TMJ dysfunction has become an all-too-common syndrome. Unfortunately when trying to correct this the spine is commonly overlooked. The upper cervical complex which is made up of the occiput atlas and axis need to be addressed in order to truly correct TMJ dysfunction. A skilled chiropractor can determine whether or not the TMJ is the root cause of the dysfunction or if the upper cervical complex is causing the TMJ to be dysfunctional. However true correction is never achieved with just one adjustment. Our body has learned responses and muscle memory that needs to be overcome. Which is why multiple adjustments are needed to correct an issue. As a movement professional, I agree with him when he states, “a duo of Chiropractic, physical therapy with a focus on correctional exercise can help one achieve true correction in a fraction of the time.” I like to use massage of the offending tight jaw muscles to allow for a release of muscular trigger point referral into the jaw, side of the head, cheek and the base of the neck. This manual therapy is performed inside the mouth and is very effective in relaxing over active jaw muscles. Ultimately, the main drive of correction is postural alignment. Often, those who are at the desk for hours at a time suffer a tremendous amount of stress on the TMJ. The jaw is uncomfortably “jammed” into its joint socket. The upper neck is also put at a place of compromise causing alignment issues in the spine and referring pain into the jaw, ear, or skull. Usually there will be a loss of neck rotation and complimentary overall neck and shoulder tension. Clenching secondary to stress at work or at home, causes these small muscles to cause undue wearing of the joint and poor jaw opening and closing. Headaches also participate in the jaw and/or neck dysfunction and can be a result of the alignment issue. These headaches are located at the base of the skull, the side of the head, and the top of the head. Resolution of headaches can also be difficult if the whole head, neck, jaw, and shoulders aren’t taken into account. Overall, alignment correction will be successful if you

at Creekside Kicks off Homecoming Week by Vanessa Kromer & Diane Grant of the PTSO at CHS.
Homecoming Week at Creekside High School began with an extremely important message for the Junior and Senior student body on October, 17th from special guest speaker Cara Filler who spoke on her program called The Drive To Save Lives Tour. In addition to the speaker, the school hosted a Safety Fair for all students during the lunch periods put on by the Florida Coalition. In attendance were representatives from Florida S.A.D.D, Teen Safe Driving Coalition, SJC Tax Collector Driver’s Education office, SJC Sheriff’s department and the Florida Highway Patrol. The event was sponsored by the PTSO and funded by State Farm with special thanks to the Florida S.A.D.D for assisting in organizing the event and the CHS administration for their support. Cara Filler is one of the top youth motivational speakers in North America and speaks to over 150 schools each year. The Drive To Save Lives Tour is the one school event students will never forget. Cara and her fellow speakers are driven to put the brakes on teen deaths due to destructive decisions. Cara’s story begins with the day before their 18th birthday, Cara’s twin sister Mairin, was killed in a car crash because she made a bad choice to ride with her boyfriend who liked to speed. Mairin died at the scene of the crash with Cara being the first to arrive at the scene of the accident. They were going 100+ mph in a 30 mph zone. Cara stressed to the students that they indeed have choices….and sometimes the choices they make could mean life or death. She provided the students with a buffet of choices they may not have even realize they had. What a great reminder and eye-opener for the students as they headed into Homecoming Weekend. 1. Don’t put yourself at risk, walk away from bad choices. 2. Get out of the car if you are already inside, speak up

After our first issue announcing our monthly makeover project, I received the following email: Hi Nikki, I'm a 55 year-old grandmother who has recently become the primary caregiver for my 5 year-old grandson. I'm open to suggestions as well as new routines to stay young in order to give my grandson all that he deserves! Billie Garcia At a time of year when we are reminded to reflect back and appreciate who and what we have in our lives, I could think of no better model to feature, than Ms. Billie Garcia. Life happens, and often in very unpredictable ways, though when it does... plans B's are essential. Billie was a necessary blessing, called to raise her sweet 5 year old grandson in a season where the traditional family unit was not accessible to him. The irony is, as thankful as she feels that she "gets" to take care of Braedon, he will one day look back and realize his greatest blessing was how selfless his "Gigi" was, to step up and lean into a parental role again. Billie and Braedon live in Nocatee, and this sweet young man she is raising is a polite, adorable boy. I had the pleasure of meeting him and was quite impressed with his manners.

We first met at the Pink Nickel. Billie was pleasantly surprised at a few items we found to compliment her taller framed curves. With our fashion recommendations, she picked up a pair of Agnes and Dora leggings. We completed her look by adding in a Dreamin' of Lace Tank Top with black laced trim. The featured floral cardigan kimono really made her look and confidence pop! Though Billie typically wears flat sandals, we encouraged her to "step" out of her comfort zone, and into a pair of "In Style" open-toed "booties" with a platform heel. We decorated our model in golden colorful accents. Wearing all Premier Designs accessories, Billie's earrings are called Zoey. Light weight, with cut crystal accents. They are 2 inches long on french wires. Her neckline is adorned with a removable strand necklace called Glam Girl. A sparkling look for the upcoming holiday season. Finally, sporting another favorite piece, called Pop of Posh, which is a soft, gold and light colored wrap bracelet. After Billie's transformation, we had to ask....what was her favorite part of this makeover? She loved the end result of her hair color and cut. Wearing leggings and lashes was most "out of .her comfort zone!" We all enjoyed making Billie over from head to toe, though in truth? More people can stand to have a heart like Billie's. Loving others above ourselves. We were thankful to make her day, as much as she is thankful to make her grandson's life a better one. Every day!

What Pet Owners Should Know about Common Plants Toxic to Dogs, Cats Sago palms, also known as King palms, are common plants found around homes throughout Northeast Florida. As a specialist in internal medicine for the clinic, Dr. Bertalan has treated several dogs after ingesting parts of the Sago palm. “If your pet does eat on the bark or seeds of a Sago palm, its best to get to a veterinarian immediately,” she said. “The sooner the exposure is handled and treatment begins, the less risk of long-term complications and the better chance of survival.” While Sago palms are extremely toxic to dogs, many flowers in the lily family – especially Easter Lilies – are extremely poisonous to cats. “Cats are more common lily-poisoning victims, but they are toxic to both,” said Dr. Krysta Deitz, a new internal medicine specialist at the beaches clinic. “All lilies, which are extremely popular bouquet items, are toxic to animals to some degree…including Tiger Lilies, Tulips and Calla Lilies, but Easter Lilies are the most dangerous. Even a sniff of the pollen can be fatal to a kitten or cat.” Deitz suggests that if you have a bouquet or lilies in the house and own an animal, just make sure they’re placed in a location that can’t be reached by a pet. Other popular bouquet items that can be hazardous to animals include Baby's breath, Bird of Paradise, Carnations, Daffodils, Dahlias, Daisies, Irises and Peonies. While not as life-threatening the others, there are other plants both doctors say you

should avoid inside and outside your home if you have pets. Popular garden items that are poisonous include Azalea, Buttercups, Chrysanthemums, Gardenias, Gladiolas, Hibiscus, Hyacinth, Hydrangeas, Mums, Primroses, Rhododendrons and Sweet Peas. Climbing plants like Ivy and Wisteria should be off limits to your dog. Even medicinal and recreational plants are unsafe for dogs and cats, including St. John's Wort, Aloe, Tobacco and Rhubarb plants. “Since the holidays are around the corner, we want to remind people that Mistletoe is also poisonous, and Poinsettias can be extremely irritating to the mouth and stomach if ingested,” Dr. Deitz said. “Fortunately, the unpleasant taste keeps animals from eating a lot of the plant, but its best if you keep pets away from them.” The doctors stress that pet owners should keep their favorite flowers where they can appreciate their beauty, but lock them away when they’re not at home and keep a close watch when pets are near them. Likewise, with outdoor plants, just keep a close eye on pets when they are playing in the yard. “It's not advisable to let pets out unsupervised, and you can’t watch them every second, but you can help keep your pet healthy by knowing which plants and trees are toxic in your area,” Dr. Bertalan said. “Just by being aware of the danger and by taking proper precautions, you can keep your favorite plants and pets safe.” A complete list of plants toxic to pets can be found at www.sevo-med.com under ‘resources.’

Corneal Ulcers in Dogs & Cats There are several causes of acutely red and painful eyes and one of the most common causes is a scrape to the surface of the eye. The clear surface of the eye is called the cornea; because it is the outermost layer of the eye, it is prone to scrapes and tears. Causes of Ulcers • Rough contact with plants or bushes • Scratches from another animal • Self-trauma (rubbing at a painful ear or eye) • Chemical irritation (shampoo or stick bug spray) • Foreign body injury • Dry eye (not making enough tears) • Distichiasis (eyelashes growing downward) • In cats, herpes virus A fluorescent stain is used to confirm if there is an ulcer. Normally, the stain will run smoothly off the surface of the cornea. If the cornea is damaged, the stain will stick to the damaged area and look bright green under a fluorescent lamp. Treatment • Antibiotic drops or ointments 5-6 times a day to prevent infection • Atropine Sulfate – this is to provide pain
relief by dilating the pupil. • Treatment of underlying cause (dry eye, distichiasis, etc) • Elizabethan collar should be worn at all times to prevent self trauma. (Not using a collar is the number one reason that a superficial ulcer won’t heal). Re-Check is Important It is important that the eye be stained again after one week of therapy or sooner depending on the ulcer. Most ulcers will have healed in this time but some will require additional time. Your veterinarian will inform you if referral to an ophthalmologist is recommended. Some Special Ulcer Conditions Indolent Ulcer Some ulcers form with a small lip on the edge of it which interferes and prevents healing. Several techniques can be used to remedy this situation: the lip can be rubbed away, medicated eye drops can be added to strengthen the cornea, or surgery can be performed. Melting Ulcers When the cornea is infected, it will develop a tan gooey appearance because the bacteria or fungi causing the
infection induce enzymes that actually dissolve corneal collagen fibers. In addition to antibiotic drops, the eye will need medication to inactivate the collagen dissolving enzymes. Descemetocele Descemet’s membrane is the last thin membrane of the cornea. A descemetocoele presents a high risk for rupture and measures must be taken to protect the eye. Usually surgery is needed. Corneal sequestrum A cat-specific consequence of chronic ulceration is a corneal sequestrum. This condition is a dead piece of cornea that appears as an amber colored spot with ulceration surrounding it. The preferred method of treatment for a sequestrum is surgery. Again, corneal ulcers and erosions usually heal routinely but pay close attention for any changes that could indicate a more serious turn of events. Be sure self-trauma (rubbing the eye) is prevented and go to your rechecks at the proper time. If anything seems not to be proceeding properly, be sure to contact your veterinarian.
