ST.JOHNS MAGAZINE

Dear Reader, As we celebrate six years in business, I feel grateful for the chance to wake up each day and pour my heart into something I love - making little magazines for our amazing community. I never expected to be a publisher. I discovered the business of magazine publishing thirteen years ago when I was searching for something creative and flexible I could do from home when my kids were little. I came upon a magazine franchise called “the Kids Directory”, which seemed to fit with my goals. At the time my triplets were about 3 and my older son was 6 years old. I had a master’s degree in history, I had been a teacher and then a stay-at-home Mom, a Journalist, a Communications Director for a State Politician in NY but I had never owned my own business or done sales or graphic design. The two things I had going for me was that I was enthusiastic about the concept of owning a local resource magazine for Moms and I was an artist and writer in my spare time. In the beginning I relied on others to do the design work for my magazine but as time went on I dabbled in layout, and soon discovered it was something that truly made my heart sing. I will never forget the first ad I created and the thrill it gave me to use the colors and shape tools, the font tools - for me it was magic! I started with The Capital District Kids Directory in 2005, then Our Towne Rensco in 2010, and finally in 2012 St. Johns Magazine. SJM was the culmination of many ideas I had over the years and to finally see it in print in November 2012 was a truly rewarding experience. They say timing is everything and our mission of connecting the growing communities of northern St. Johns coincided perfectly with the growth in our community. The winding trajectory of my career taught me to always expect the unexpected, to follow dreams, with patience and they will become reality. Over the years I have worked with hundreds of local businesses, creating ads, writing articles, designing websites, basically telling their story to the community. I am grateful for the opportunity to have known them and call many of them friends.

T

his month we are getting to know Dr. Jimmy Glenos and Dr. Craig Hadgis of SMILES BY GLENOS. In business since the mid 1980s, this well respected St. Augustine Orthodontic practice has a new second office in northern St. Johns off Race Track Road in Doctor’s Village, beside Memorial Emergency Center. These board certified orthodontists focus on creating beautiful, healthy smiles using the most state-of-the-art cost efficient approaches. Their mission is simple: “Our primary goal is to provide the best possible orthodontic care and experience for all ages.”

SMILES BY GLENOS!

Continuing 25 Years of Excellence with a new office in Northern St. Johns!

Where are you from? DR. JIMMY GLENOS: I was born and raised in Orlando, attended the University of Florida for my undergraduate studies, earning a Bachelor of Science in Zoology with Honors, and then attended the University of Florida School of Dentistry, receiving a Doctor of Dental Medicine. I fell in love with St. Augustine when I moved here from Gainesville to practice family dentistry for a year while I awaited the start of my orthodontic residency specialty training at The University of Louisville. DR. CRAIG HADGIS: I started off as a Michigander, born and raised in Grosse Pointe, Michigan. In the 1970s, my grandparents moved to Flagler Beach. Northeast Florida became a frequent vacation destination during my childhood. I was excited to move to northern Florida, when I was accepted into Jacksonville University School of Orthodontics. My wife Anne and I are St. Augustine residents and have enjoyed making this area our home. When did you begin practicing orthodontics? DR. GLENOS: I began providing specialized orthodontic treatment in St. Augustine area in 1984. After about ten years in St. Johns Medical Park, along US1, we built our "dream office" in the same medical park. About two years ago, we opened a second state-of-the-art location in Doctors Village, along Race Track Road. DR. HADGIS: After graduating from Jacksonville University School of Orthodontics in 2010, I have been fortunate to have a variety of clinical experiences and have focused on keeping up to date with the latest technologies in the orthodontic field. Dr. Glenos and I have been colleagues for several years. Now that we are in practice together, our goal is to provide exceptional care to patients throughout St. Johns County and many surrounding areas. Why did you choose this profession? (How did you get your start)? DR. GLENOS: Sometimes, I believe it may have been preordained. When I was fifteen years old, I fell in love with a girl who's first job was as an orthodontic technician. Understandably, at such a young age, it was a relatively brief but passionate relationship. My junior year in college, I decided to pursue a career in dentistry. Lo and behold, Karen and I reconnected and started dating again. We were mar-

6

ried my senior year of dental school. I enjoyed practicing family dentistry, but orthodontics was especially appealing because of the important impact one’s smile has on their everyday life. I truly believe that by straightening crowded and rotated teeth and improving the bite and smile, we are, in many cases, changing people's lives. It has to be one of the best jobs in the world! The only downside is that since Karen has been active in orthodontics longer than I, she sometimes thinks she is "the boss." But that's ok and probably true for most marriages..right? DR. HADGIS: My family comes from a dental background. My grandfather was a dental lab technician and my father is a practicing dentist in Michigan. My father is passionate about practicing dentistry and raised my brothers and I to find our own passion in life, so our careers would not feel like “just a job.” Solving puzzles and mathematics came easily to me growing up, which is the reason I initially chose to become an engineer. While earning my bachelor’s and master’s degrees in engineering from the University of Michigan, I learned about the connections between medicine, biomedical engineering, biomechanics, and orthopedics. Inspired by these connections and building on my engineering degrees, I chose to specialize in orthodontics in order to help people by making a positive impact in their lives in a visible way. I find that having a master’s degree in biomedical engineering provides me with a unique perspective in evaluating, planning, and carrying out treatment plans in both simple and complex cases.

I believe the most valuable attributes are our outstanding team who treat everyone like family, and the fact that every proposed treatment is carefully planned and executed by Board Certified orthodontic specialists.

What is the most common misunderstanding about orthodontics? DR. GLENOS: A common misconception has been to consider orthodontic treatment as an expensive luxury. Today, orthodontic treatment is a relatively modest investment compared to other things - including dental expenses for crowns, implants or cosmetic dentistry and the benefits of orthodontic corrections are outstanding. Not only in one's appearance but in the health of the dentition as one ages. Most recently, a new misconception is being promoted by companies offering DIY "do it yourself" orthodontic treatment. Unsupervised tooth movement is dangerous with a high potential risk of damage to the teeth, the bone support (tooth loss), jaw joint issues and failure of any improvement due to relapse. Reports are surfacing that this is happening often and, unfortunately, the patient or parents, end up paying for treatment twice. If they have orthodontic insurance and the benefits were used during the DIY treatment, the patient is stuck with depleted benefits.

DR. HADGIS: Both Dr. Glenos and I are diplomates of the American Board of Orthodontics. Only 1 in 3 orthodontists take the extra time and effort necessary to achieve this distinction. We are one of the few orthodontic practices in the country offering Insignia which is individualized custom brackets and wires made specifically for each patient from digital 3D oral scans which replace goopy impressions, and from 3D digital x-rays replacing higher radiation film x-rays. We also pride ourselves on offering exceptional customer service from our entire team. What technology is used to determine treatment plans for your patients? DR. GLENOS: Complete orthodontic records consist of properly taken digital photos, a 3D digital scan, a digital cephalometric film (enabling us to measure the relationship of the upper and lower jaws to one another and the angulations of the teeth to the jaws) and a digital panoramic x-ray. In some cases where custom designed appliances may be desired, the final occlusion can be planned

DR. HADGIS: Many people are not aware that to become an orthodontic specialist requires acceptance into an accredited full-time residency program which involves 2-3 additional years of dedicated orthodontic training after dental school. Further, each case requires a thorough analysis by the orthodontic specialist to achieve the best outcome for the patient in terms of a healthy, functional, and beautiful smile. What are some of the greatest successes you have had for patients? DR. GLENOS: We see amazing new smiles completed every day. Personally, the most rewarding ones are when the patient first looks in the mirror and the tears of joy begin to flow. Clinically, I am most proud of the cases that have been planned since age 6-7 where we have timed simple procedures that result in the teeth growing in so nice that very little time in appliances is required to make them perfect.

Dr. Jimmy Glenos & Dr. Craig Hadgis with their extraordinary team in the St. Johns office along Race Track Rd. digitally and viewed on the computer. DR. HADGIS: We stay at the leading edge as technology in the orthodontic field advances rapidly. We offer digital treatment planning with technologies such as Invisalign (custom 3D planned clear aligners) and Insignia (custom braces and wires) to properly align teeth.

DR. HADGIS: I’m very pleased that I’ve had the opportunity to help improve so many patients’ health and self-esteem. Further, many patients, both children and adults alike, have reported improved sleep as a result of orthodontic treatment.

What do you like to do in your spare time? DR. GLENOS: I'm an outdoorsman. I enjoy sportfishing, diving, kiteboarding, water skiing, hunting, and many other outdoor activities. I also enjoy traveling and shopping with "the boss."

What sets your offices apart from other orthodontic offices? DR. GLENOS: Besides offering the latest orthodontic equipment like digital scanning and ultra-low dose 3D radiography, and the finest office environments,

DR. HADGIS: I most enjoy spending time with family and friends. I also enjoy exercising, biking, golfing, snow skiing, and following professional and college sports.

The Perfect Bite by Lori Allen Local Foodie Blog

Its that time of year again! Shopping for the holidays and enjoying some good food and wine! Here are a few places to check out.

Coastal Wine Market & Tasting Room (Nocatee) 641 Crosswater Parkway b,

Nocatee, FL 32081 . (904) 395-3520 www.coastalwinemarket.com So when you open the door to this ornate yet not pretentious, quaint Tasting Room you are greeted right away with warm friendly smiles and hellos. You can see all the wonderful wines displayed and a chalkboard listing all the specials. Because it was the holidays my friends and I decided to go with a little sparkling Rose seeing how it was the special of the evening. It was light and somewhat fruity with lots of bubbles, a perfect pairing for some cheese and crackers. We went with just one cheese, a nice sharp Manchego that was served with toasted bread and herbed Pecans. This set the tone right away with every bite complimenting the sparkling wine. Our next wine was a Pinot Noir and we choose some Coastal Wine Potato Wedges or as others would refer to them as loaded potato skins. They were filled with wild boar, Karst Cave Aged Cheddar and were served with a side of Lemon Chive Aioli for dipping. They were not huge, hence the name “small plates” but they were packed with flavor! You could taste the meatiness of the boar and sharpness of the cheese cooled down with the Aioli. Really good. We also tried the Rustic Stuffed Mushrooms and had to fight over who got the last one! These are filled with Italian cheese and crispy prosciutto and of course a nice tangy cabernet reduction. Swipe those thru the reduction and pop them in your mouth for a bite of rich creamy mushroom flavor with just a tad bit of “zing” from the wine. YUM! Our last bite of flavor was their market meatballs. You can order as many as you want because they are priced per piece. They come with what they call “Homemade Jersey Gravy” which is essentially a wonderful garlicky red sauce that the meatballs are simmered in and then they top it off with some fresh Basil Ricotta Cheese. You can’t stop dipping your meatball in that soft creamy cheese!

The Cellar upstairs at San Sebastian Winery

157 King St, St Augustine, FL 32084. (904) 826-1594. www.sansebastianwinery.com The cellar upstairs at San Sebastion Winery is another great place to stop by in St. Augustine. Their food menu has grown and they have choices such as a cheese platter, meat and cheese platter, Beef Carpaccio- my favorite which is espresso rubbed shaved beef tenderloin served with a 3 pepper sauce, topped with shaved parmesan. This dish is meaty and savory but yet light because of the thinly shaved beef. It pairs well with a nice Cabernet Sauvignon. Baguettes, pretzels, sandwiches are also on the menu as well as some local craft beers. Live music can be heard most weekend afternoons and Saturday nite from the roof top bar which also boasts of a great view of the city and sunsets.

Cooper's Hawk Winery & Restaurant 4850 Big Island Drive Jacksonville, FL 32246. (904) 559-4999. www..chwinery.com

For a fun place to take a break at while shopping at the town center hit the bar at Cooper's Hawk Winery & Restaurant where there is always something going on. Most evenings they offer wine tastings and sometimes if you are lucky free samples as you walk in the door! There is a full service restaurant but the bar area is lively and offers lots of great deals. They have what they call Dana’s Pineappletini which tastes as good as it sounds, tart and sweet all rolled into one. I like to get the Ahi Tuna Tacos blackened and Seared Rare and then topped with citrus Slaw, Pico de Gallo, Avocado, and Cilantro Wasabi Cream. The blackened tuna is so tender and the cilantro Wasabi cream adds the tang and heat. Flatbreads are on the menu and there are several choices. My favorite is the one with Italian Sausage& whipped Ricotta, Pesto, Mozzarella and grated Parmesan which goes excellent with their house red.

Cheddars Scratch Kitchen.

4954 Town Center Pkwy, Jacksonville, FL 32246 www.cheddars.com If you are thirsty and need an extra pick me up to continue on shopping at the town center stop on by Cheddars Scratch Kitchen. They have this insanely good watermelon margarita that is served with a huge slice of watermelon, so cool and refreshing. It goes great with their Spicy buffalo Cauliflower bites, just enough heat to go along with the cooling margarita. I love that they have a Spiked Cherry Limeade which brings back some old time memories. If you really want to quench your thirst try their Texas Sweet Tea made with Firefly Sweet Tea vodka, amaretto, lemonade, and more vodka. Limit 2 per guest! So don’t be trying to shop afterwards because who knows what your Visa will say in the morning!?

Palm Valley Outdoors Bar & Grill

377 South Roscoe Blvd Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida When you are done with shopping Palm Valley Outdoors is right under the bridge heading out or coming back from Micklers. Not to be confused with another similar named restaurant (although both are good) this one is more casual and you can rent water sporting equipment from them. They have a large selection of some great wines and crafted drinks but at this place I’m all about the buckets! Anchor Bucket, Treasure Chest and my favorite Totally Crushing it! Stoli Crush Grapefruit, Pineapple, Champagne and more! It goes great with their blackened fish tacos or one of their specials of the month. I was lucky enough to get the lobster special and it was cooked to perfection along with a little Ol’bay seasoned button and beautiful sunset. Definitely a place to go and “chill”.

South Kitchen & Spirits Ponte Vedra (Nocatee)

150 Pine Lake Drive, Suite A Ponte Vedra www.south.kitchen

Another good stop before or after the beach is South Kitchen & Spirits. You can have dinner or just a snack and drinks. The menu is seasonal so you never know what inventive and exciting new entrees or snacks will appear. They make everything in house so no matter what you try it’s gonna be good. I love their crispy chicken legs with molasses buffalo wing sauce. Sweet and heat can’t be beat! And of course their homemade blue cheese cools everything off. This goes great with a drink called the Ice Pick which is Citrus Vodka, Double Strength Tea, Lemonade served in their Mason jars. It kind of reminds you of the Long Island tea but Southern style. They also have plenty of good wine choices and serve half bottles of wine which you don’t see often. Their Happy hour is every day! And you get half off any drink (no matter what it is) and half of appetizes as well served in the bar or out on the Patio. Now that that weather is cooling off this is a great deal and a fun way to relieve the shopping stress!

Carrera Wine Cellar 35 San Marco Ave.St. Augustine

If you are heading down to Saint Augustine to find that unique gift and need a break give Carrera Wine Cellar a try. They are close to all the antique shops on San Marco so they are great spot to take in a nice glass of wine and figure out your next stop. There is a small outdoors area as well which is nice when the weather is good. They have an extensive choice of wines as well as a small snack menu. I love that they offer all kinds of fun classes and events throughout the months but what is really cool is their Enomatic. It is apparently America’s favorite Wine Sampling Machine which is a fun and interactive way to taste a

variety of wines, so give it a try! While you are in the Nocatee area don’t forget to stop by Coastal Wine Market and Tasting room. You can pick up that last minute gift (who doesn’t like a nice bottle of wine or a basket) and have a glass for yourself while you are there. Happy Shopping and Happy Holidays! www.stjohnsmag.com

Helping Your Children Through The Holidays After Divorce

I

f you are divorced with children, then you are never completely separated from your ex. This is because you and your ex are connected through your children and will be throughout life. And, irrespective of what you think about your former partner, you have a job to do, which is to do the best job you can in raising your children. Thanksgiving is almost here, and the Christmas and New Year holiday season is right around the corner. These holidays are very special for many people and their families, and dealing with them during and after divorce can be challenging. Here are my top tips for helping your children have the best holiday season possible despite your divorce:

1. GET IN THE SPIRIT OF THE SEASON - The holiday season is a time for being thankful, for giving, and for new beginnings. Teach your children to truly appreciate Thanksgiving and be grateful for the love you share with them. You can show them how to appreciate the Christmas season by being giving to others and each other. And, through your example, you can show them how the New Year can be one of healthy, fresh starts.

months of frustration and anger (not to mention attorney’s fees) down the road.

3. TIME & ATTENTION ARE THE GREATEST GIFTS: Being able to lavish gifts upon our children can feel great. But always remember that love means far more than money and material things. Your love, time, attention, and emotional support are much more important to your children than any material possessions.

4. PLAN IN ADVANCE FOR NEXT YEAR: Avoid last-minute juggling of schedules and the agony of 11th-hour negotiations in years to come and set up a plan for next year now if possible. Even if you simply begin the dialogue with your ex now, starting the conversation now can save you a lot of stress later. And, begin planning now with your own extended family to help make this process even easier. Everyone will be happier knowing what is coming, and you can avoid conflict for next year’s holidays.

5. ESTABLISH AND MAINTAIN TRADITIONS WITH YOUR CHILDREN: Holiday traditions are an important way in which we build memories that can last a lifetime.

2. COMMUNICATE & COORDINATE: Communicate Whether it is the continuation of past rituals, or creating and coordinate with your children's other parent. Look, it is understandable if you find this to be a challenge. But a brief email, text message, or conversation can help make certain that everyone’s plans for the holidays work out well. Work out exactly where and with whom your children will be during what times, and when, where, and how exchanges will occur. Timely and properly detailed communications in advance can help to avoid frustration and confusion for you, your children’s other parent, and your children. A few minutes now can spare you days, weeks or

20

new ones, these traditions can give your children something to look forward to as they spend time with you during the upcoming holiday season.

6. ENCOURAGE YOUR CHILDREN TO ENJOY TIME WITH YOUR EX: Encourage your children to enjoy their time with their other parent – no matter your feelings about your ex, put your children first. Your children will enjoy the greatest stability when they can feel free to enjoy enriching relationships with each of their parents.
