GENEROSITY OF SPIRIT: Frank & Bonnie's Road Trip for PanCan by Debbie Gaylord

Photos by Mindy Kerr, Nature's Child Phtotography What is the secret to a long life? Well, some would say happy memories, connections, gratitude and the beautiful, strong fighting spirit of survivors who never give up but instead turn around and use their experience to help others. Bonnie and Frank Dvoravic, Owners of Rivertown Fine Wine & Spirits know first hand that life is precious. Bonnie is a 12-year survivor of pancreatic cancer, and she and Frank are passionate about increasing awareness and raising money to help others beat this terrible disease. For the past two years, Frank and Bonnie have raised funds for PANCAN through auctions at their store on County Road 210 West in St. Johns, (near Publix). To date, they have raised over $34,000 for research. They are often blown away and truly grateful to our community for their support. In October, they will feature an auction of special items with one-hundred percent of proceeds going to PANCAN. Some of the items include a Fireball ice chest, Jagermeister ice chest, a Titos cooler and more. Plus, just arrived, a 12-year-old Elijah Craig barrel of bourbon created exclusively for Rivertown (part of the sale of each bottle will go to PANCAN).

6

This summer Frank and Bonnie took a journey that led them to Washington DC to advocate for PANCAN, The Pancreatic Cancer Action Network. Along the way, they visited family and friends from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, including Frank’s 96-year-old “Uncle Frank” whom he had not seen in fifty years. His advice for a long life was to take vitamins, baby aspirin, chocolate kisses and two Coca-Colas a day. The experience reminded them how blessed they are to be here enjoying the life they have built, a life that includes a beautiful riverfront home, time spent with their children and grandchildren, and a successful family business.

Uncle Frank!

PURPLE STRIDE WALK/ RUN 2018!

In Washington DC over 600 survivors and family members from PANCAN visited US Representative John Rutherford & representatives of Senator Bill Nelson, and Senator Marco Rubio. Meeting with legislators was empowering. Survivors were able to share their stories so legislators really understand what families experience when they are faced with a disease that according to PANCAN statistics takes 91 percent of its victims within five years and kills more people than breast cancer in the United States. The goal of advocacy at the national level is to double the survival rate by 2020. One of the main challenges for pancreatic cancer is lack of early detection. There are few symptoms and no test exists to warn people they may be genetically inclined to get the disease. Although it is the second most common cancer it does not have funding earmarked for research to find a cure. Increased funding would help researchers develop a test so that early detection would be possible. Efforts like Frank & Bonnie’s in-store Auctions and larger events such as the PurpleStride walks and runs held across the country continue to help researchers find answers to this devastating disease.

The five-year survival rate has increased by three percentage points since 2014 and is now 9 percent. PANCAN has inspired more than 1 million people across the country to take action in the fight against pancreatic cancer. PurpleStride walks are among the largest sources of funding for the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network. When you Wage Hope at PurpleStride, you join a vibrant community of survivors, impacted families, loved ones, researchers and advocates committed to rewriting the future of this deadly disease. WHEN: Saturday, November 3, 2018 8:00 a.m. Opening Ceremonies 8:30 a.m. 5K Run/Walk Begins WHERE: University of North Florida 1 University of North FL Dr. Jacksonville, FL 32224 INFORMATION: events@pancan.org

FACTS ABOUT PANCREATIC CANCER (statistics from the PANCAN website www.pancan.org) Pancreatic cancer takes 91 percent of its victims within five years and kills more people than breast cancer in the United States. The disease is the third leading cause of cancer-related death, and it is projected to become the second around 2020.

Pancan Florida group meets with U.S. Representative John Rutherford in Washington, D.C. this summer

More than 55,000 Americans will be diagnosed with the disease this year. That’s more than 152 mothers, daughters, fathers, sons, sisters, brothers, colleagues or friends who will hear the dreaded news every single day. www.stjohnsmag.com

FINANCIAL FOCUS

You Can Work to Become a Better Investor

by Craig Kluka, Financial Advisor with Edward Jones

Next week, we observe Labor Day, a holiday to honor all the hard-working people in this country. As one of them, keep in mind that your efforts can have positive results. Famed film producer Samuel Goldwyn once said: “The harder I work, the luckier I get.” And this same philosophy can apply to your investing, too – because you can indeed work to become a better investor.

Consider these steps: • Work to understand your goals and risk tolerance. Selfknowledge is important in all phases of life – and it’s certainly essential to you when you invest. For one thing, you need to know your goals. How long do you plan to work? What would you like to do when you retire? If you have children, do you expect to help pay for their college educations? You'll also need to know your risk tolerance to help determine your investment choices. Investors with a high tolerance for risk typically can overlook the day-today fluctuations in the financial markets, and may be comfortable investing more aggressively. But those with a low risk tolerance may be more inclined to focus on investments that offer greater preservation of principal, even if this means sacrificing some growth potential.

• Work to develop good investment habits. Developing good habits often pays off. For example, if you exercise regularly, don’t smoke and follow a sensible diet, you will likely help your long-term health. And you can follow good investment habits, too, such as contributing regularly to your 401(k) or other employer-sponsored retirement plan. You’ll also want to avoid bad habits, such as overreacting to a sharp drop in the financial markets. In an effort to cut your losses, you might respond to this downturn by immediately selling investments whose fundamentals are still strong and whose prospects still may be positive. • Work to get the assistance you need. Investing can be complex, so you may want to work with a financial professional. But investing is just one part of your overall financial picture, so working with an attorney can help with your estate plans. And a tax professional can advise you on the tax-related consequences of various financial moves. There aren’t many guarantees in the investment world – but the harder you work at becoming a good investor, the better your chances of reaching your ultimate objectives.

• Work to learn all you can about your investments. Here’s a bit of advice that will always be valid: Don’t invest in what you don’t understand. The more you know about your investments and what you can expect from them, the less likely that you will be surprised at their performance and their impact on your financial strategy. When you invest in stocks, you hope their value will appreciate over time, but you shouldn’t be shocked over short-term price fluctuations. Conversely, when you purchase a fixed-rate vehicle, such as a Certificate of Deposit (CD), you expect regular interest payments and a return of your principal when the CD matures. But do not anticipate much, if any, growth in the value of your investment. *This article was written by Edward Jones for use by your local Edward Jones Financial Advisor. www.stjohnsmag.com

Take a Tasty Tour of Local Cuisine During St. Augustine’s Restaurant Week by Bridget L. Van Landingham

St. Augustine Independent Restaurant Association (SAiRA) once again invites residents and visitors to tour the local cuisine scene during St. Augustine Restaurant Week from October 15 to 21, 2018. Over a dozen independently-owned restaurants throughout St. Augustine will present special lunch and dinner menu experiences for Restaurant Week. 2018 marks the third year of this weeklong dining event when diners can try a variety of cuisines and flavors prepared by local chefs. “Restaurant Week is a culinary celebration of St. Augustine’s best independently-owned restaurants,” said Jeremy Ticehurst, President of SAiRA. “Every restaurant is excited to showcase their most creative, delicious, and flavorful dishes to Restaurant Week participants.” Lunch menu experiences are $20.00 per person and dinner menu experiences are $35.00 per person. Participants can pick up a Restaurant Week Passport at any SAiRA member establishment listed at StAugustineRestaurants.com/RestaurantWeek. Diners who order from a SAiRA member Restaurant Week menu will receive a Passport sticker. Passports with five stickers can then be redeemed at the sixth SAiRA member restaurant visit for $25 off through November 16, 2018. SAiRA membership is made up of independently-owned restaurants located in St. Augustine, from Vilano Beach to downtown and throughout St. Augustine Beach. The association’s mission includes building relationships through the sharing of information and supporting local independent restaurants.

14

Member restaurants work side by side to help each other exceed the expectations of their guests and advance St. Augustine's unique culinary and cultural diversity. Together, they leverage resources and hospitality to financially and physically support organizations throughout the St. Augustine community. Additionally, members support the SAiRA Foundation, a non-profit organization committed to helping workers within the hospitality industry in times of extreme need and to promote hospitality-based education. For more information about St. Augustine’s 2018 Restaurant Week, visit StAugustineRestaurants. com/RestaurantWeek, send an email to info@StAugustineRestaurants.com or call (904) 540-3129.

EXCEPTIONAL SENIOR!

Creekside Senior & Varsity Cheer Leader

Emily Kromer Meet Creekside High School Varsity Cheer Leader and senior, Emily Kromer. Emily was recently chosen to represent CHS athletes as one of their Exceptional Seniors for the year. Being part of the cheer team at CHS the past two years has been such a wonderful experience for Emily. When Emily is not cheering for Creekside you can find her dancing at Switzerland Dance School, studying for the many advanced courses she takes or participating in one of the many clubs at CHS that she belongs to. She was accepted into the Chick-Fil-A leadership program last year, as well as serves on FCA (Fellowship of Christian Athletes), FBLA (Future Business Leaders of America), Best Buddies, and SWAT (Students Working Against Tobacco) clubs at school. As one of the commissioners for the Link Crew at Creekside, she also enjoys mentoring and helping the freshmen through their first year of high school. As the oldest of five daughters, Emily will be the first to leave home for college next fall. She has

a passion for working with and helping people, especially children. She desires to become an ER Nurse or possibly a Nurse Practitioner where she can work with patients as young as infants up to the elderly. She was accepted into the Teen Volunteer Program at Baptist Hospital- Beaches this summer working in the Emergency Room. She is hoping to attend UCF next fall with a major in Nursing.

Fun Facts:

Emily is obsessed with all things HARRY POTTER and has spent over 2 weeks in Peru on a mission trip throughout the country.

The Perfect Bite... by Local Foodie, Lori Allen

COUSINS Maine Lobster Cousins Maine Lobster (Neptune Beach, FL) 630-14 Atlantic Blvd, Neptune Beach, Florida 32266

So I ventured out of our 210 area to see what all the rave was about down at Atlantic Beach. That’s right, a new place in town that boasts of the best lobster rolls. So you know this New England Girl had to give them a try! Cousins Maine Lobster food truck has set up a permanent shop (and Yes these are the people that won on Shark tank!). Their menu consists of several New England favorites but I got right to the point…Lobster. They have the Maine – with mayo and the Connecticut - with butter so of course I had to give both of them a try! The Maine- is not overpowering with mayo it is just lightly tossed in it which makes the lobster taste cool and creamy. The Connecticut- is not dressed with anything that I could taste but possibly lightly poached in butter. This roll is served with melted butter for either pouring over or dipping in so the lobster is warm and buttery. Both of these lobster rolls are served in butter toasted New England style hotdog roll. This roll is a must for us New Englanders. It is crispy on the outside and soft in the middle which makes it a perfect vessel to hold the succulent tender lobster. These rolls had nice large chunks of tender lobster meat that were perfectly cooked, fresh tasting and full of flavor. I did indulge and got the “extra meat” on the Connecticut and it was worth every bite! I have tried a few lobster rolls around town (but not all, I’m working on it) and so far this one most replicates the Lobster rolls that I’m familiar with from the North. Nothing overly fru fru just down to the lobster and the roll. I also had to try their whole belly clams. I understand that these are an acquired taste because you are eating the entire clam, belly and all not just cut up strips. These were definitely some of the best I’ve had in Florida. They had the light flour batter (not the cornmeal that they use in the south) and were cooked to a

golden brown, so crispy and briny, a true taste of the sea. Served with a house made tartar ("tada") sauce you really did feel like you were at a clam shop in Cape Cod. My friends gave the Lobster tots a try so of course my wandering fork made it over to their plate. These tots were amazingly crunchy with all the stuff they had piled on top of them. From the Pico de gallo (tomatoes and onions) to the cilantro lime sauce and of course the tender lobster meat one forkful of these and your mouth just had a flavor explosion. So if you are tater tot fan these are definitely worth a try. My friends were also a huge fan of the lobster bisque. So creamy with a hint of Sherry and tons of lobster flavor! For the sweet tooth in y’all give the whoopee pie a try. I grew up on this chocolate cake-like cream stuffed delightful treat. It’s not too sweet but the perfect bite after your lobster meal. I see that I may need to go back to try their Haddock (not often found here in the south), Lobster grilled cheese and possibly their Lobster tail and tots. And of course another Lobster roll..or two. So if anyone is heading that way, give me a shout so I can tag along! YUM!

Dr. Christopher Henry

Henry Advanced Orthodontics

A healthy, attractive smile is an important part of our lives, regardless of age. It impacts our self-esteem, confidence, and overall well-being, as well as our personal, social, and professional relationships. Dr. Christopher Henry, of Henry Advanced Orthodontics believes that giving someone confidence in their smile is the most rewarding part of his job. Dr. Henry says “No one can take that away from them and they have one less obstacle standing in the way to achieve their life’s dreams. To me that is powerful...it’s the gift that keeps giving and priceless when compared to the investment”. In 2017, Dr. Henry, relocated to St. Johns County, and took over the Orthodontist practice of Braces by Dr. Liz. He moved here after 12 years of building a successful orthodontist practice in Alaska. He chose St. Johns County to be closer to his family and quite honestly, to thaw out a little from the cold. When you meet him it’s easy to see that his laid-back style is a perfect fit for the way we live and play in St. Augustine. His practice specializes in superior care and is known for being able to handle the toughest cases. The American Association of Orthodontists recommends that all children have a check-up with an orthodontic specialist no later than 7 years old. Why age 7? At this stage of development, it’s an ideal time to evaluate many possible dental concerns. Their growth pattern can be altered to provide a balanced bite, resolve crowding, expand the upper jaw, and diagnosis congenially missing teeth. The majority of patients

seen at this age will not require any treatment, however early treatment can be in a patient’s best interests if their problem is one that could become more serious over time if left untreated. For parents, it’s not always easy to know if your child needs orthodontic treatment. Dr. Henry’s goal is that you have a clear understanding of your specific needs, what your treatment will consist of and how long it will take. While it is ideal to see an Orthodontist at an early age, healthy teeth can be moved successfully at any age. Orthodontic treatment creates a better bite, making teeth fit better, and decreases the risk of future dental problems regardless of age. And thanks to the variety of options used by orthodontists, teens and adults may be able to inconspicuously achieve the great smile they want. New patient exams are always free and Dr. Henry and his staff are looking forward to discussing all of your treatment options to provide you with your Trademark Smile.

A Message From The Vet Why is Bloodwork for Your Pet Important? Chances are if you have been taking your pet routinely to a veterinarian, doing bloodwork has been mentioned as an option to screen your pet for disease. Physical exams can give us a lot of information about your pet’s health, but there are many things that cannot be seen on exam that bloodwork can discover.

When is bloodwork recommended? 1. Bloodwork is a general screening tool for young pets with no symptoms to serve as a baseline for your pet when they are healthy. 2. Pre-anesthetic bloodwork is a screening tool for your pet’s health prior to doing anesthesia. Specific tests such as clotting times and testing for organ dysfunction helps know what type of medications can be prescribed, see if your pet can tolerate anesthesia and make sure that your pet does not have a bleeding disorder that might present complications during surgery. 3. Bloodwork is one of the first tools used when your pet is sick to determine the cause for illness.

flammation and anemia. •A blood chemistry profile checks electrolytes, provides information about your pet’s liver, kidneys and pancreas as well as other functions of the body such as blood sugar and hydration. Unfortunately there are no cancer markers that can be tested in our pets so other tests need to be done to identify cancer specifically. •Other tests that may be recommended are a urinalysis, thyroid function testing, heartworm testing, tick borne disease testing or other infectious disease or endocrine testing. 4. Bloodwork is recommend as a screening for pets when they become geriatric. For most breeds, we consider starting this screening around the age of 7. If we identify any problems, this allows us to do some preemptive treatment such as a special diet or supplements. We will also want to monitor the abnormal values with followup bloodwork in the future to look for changes. Animals are masters at disguising illness until it gets to the point where it can no longer remain hidden. Early detection is the key in promoting a long, healthy and happy life for your best friend.
