Heavy backpacks cause back and neck pain in kids by Theresa Scully Arch Pilates

According to the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA) 2012 survey, low back pain affects the daily function of 69% of Americans. Furthermore, in a survey conducted in 1999, 60% of orthopedists reported back and shoulder pain in children due to heavy backpacks. Overall, non-traumatic low back pain develops due to poor posture and muscle strain. Wearing heavy backpacks and wearing them improperly can lead to back pain, shoulder and neck pain. There are no studies yet that address the long term affect of back pain from backpacks, but in my 14 years as an orthopedic physical therapist, I have seen postural faults and low back pain beginning in youth manifesting into chronicity in adult life. Why risk long term muscular imbalances and spinal degeneration if prevention is a choice? The way a heavy backpack affects a young developing spine is simple. Weight is distributed unevenly on one shoulder, causing the child to compensate and shift the hips and upper back over center line to counterbalance the load. This causes improper muscle activation and non-activation on one side of the spine and the other, causing a “scoliotic-like” spine that can cause stress and pain in the joints and muscles. Posture is severely affected not only with this sideways shift as in one shoulder backpack carrying, but also with carrying a heavy backpack on both shoulders with rounded shoulders, forward head, severe front lean, and a flattened low back. Growing tweens and teens already have a battle with holding themselves in proper posture. The last thing they need is a heavy back pack worsening things. The APTA recommends limiting backpack weight to 10-15% of the body weight of the child. The

American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommends a lightweight backpack such as canvas with two wide, padded shoulder straps because narrow straps can dig into shoulders. A safe backpack should also have a padded back, which is comfortable and protects kids from being injured by sharp objects such as scissors, pens, wire notebooks. A waist belt and multiple compartments can also help distribute the weight more evenly. Overall, be an advocate for your child and look for signs and symptoms of back stress. Ask your child if his/her back is sore or achy. Perform a visual inspection before you send your child off to school and see if your child’s posture is affected by the backpack. Conference with the teacher to ensure that there is enough time in between classes to return to lockers and exchange books. If pain in the back, neck and shoulders persist even after proper measurements have been taken. Seek the medical help of a physical therapist. Chances are pain can be reversed with proper muscular strengthening, stretching, and manual therapy. Your therapist will include home exercises to treat muscle and postural imbalances. Such as the cat/cow stretch, hamstring stretch, mid-back stretch and upper trapezius stretch. Strengthening will include rows, scapular stabilization, and core strengthening. Manual therapy will reduce abnormal tissue tightness relieve stress on the spine bones. Apply ice for 10 minutes for new onset, intense pain because the cause is most likely inflammation. Use heat sparingly as heat can increase inflammation and therefore increase pain. Only use heat as a contrast to treat the inflammation. The contrast is applied with 10 minutes heat and 10 minutes ice immediately afterwards. This contrast technique will help “pump” the swelling out of the tissue. I am a firm believer that if you keep adding micro stress on a joint or muscle over time, the muscle and joint complex will break down. Just as a butter knife cutting away at a 6 inch thick climbing rope will eventually cause the fibers to fray and fracture.

Backpack Carrying Tips:

•• Use both straps on the shoulders, symmetrically cinched comfortably •• Wear the backpack distributed evenly on the center of the midback, 2 inches above the low back and just below the skull •• Pack heaviest objects into the backpack first so they are carried closest to the body •• Distribute the weight evenly into multiple compartments, placing sharp items in smaller pockets •• Use proper lifting mechanics by squatting with the leg muscles and keeping it close to the body •• Put only the books needed in the backpack •• Schedule a one a week backpack cleanout day •• Make frequent trips to the locker. •• Keep 2 sets of text books, one for home and one for school •• Share a “home” text book with friends or neighbors. •• Make copies of homework assignments instead of bringing the whole book home •• Pack lightly, only the necessary items •• Use an alternate bag for heavy electronics •• Remove one or 2 text books and carry in the arms supportively clutched to the chest with both arms

Backpack no-no’s:

•• Wearing a loaded backpack that causes severe forward lean •• Carrying all books in the backpack •• Bending from the waist with straight legs to pick up the backpack •• Twisting and bending to pick up the backpack •• Slinging one shoulder strap onto the shoulder •• Wearing the backpack so it is hanging over the rear-end •• Placing non-important school items in the backpack

Keeping Allergy & Asthma Out of the Classroom by Dr. Raquel Watkins, Allergist Watkins Allergy & Asthma Clinic

18

The common cold and chickenpox aren’t the only ailments parents should worry about this back-to-school season. Allergy and asthma are the most chronic illnesses in children, and are a leading cause of missed school days in the United States. Asthma accounts for 10.5 million missed school days annually. Symptoms of these conditions can also interfere with nightly sleep, concentration in the classroom and cause learning disruptions. According to the American College of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology (ACAAI), 28 million American children have allergies and 7.1 million suffer from asthma. There can often be many more allergy and asthma triggers in the classroom than in the home environment, causing children’s immune systems to over respond. With schools commonly known as being a petri dish of germs and viruses that get passed around from child to child, parents shouldn’t just chalk up breathing difficulties and runny noses to yet another cold. Both can be signs of something more serious, such as allergies and asthma. To help parents understand if their child is at risk for missing school days due to allergy and asthma, Dr. Raquel Watkins, Jacksonville’s board certified allergist and the ACAAI offer the following tips. KNOW WHAT TRIGGERS SYMPTOMS – There are a number of inhalants in schools that can trigger allergy and asthma symptoms, such as the classroom pet, pollen and dust that has settled in the school which can contain mouse allergens. Peers with a pet at home can also trigger an allergic reaction in your little one, since these allergens can be transferred to school via clothing and backpacks. If a child says they are coughing, having difficulty breathing, have a rash, runny nose, or are sneezing, these

could all be signs they are allergic to something in school. KNOW THE DIFFERENCE – It is easy to mistake a cough and a runny nose as signs of a common cold or respiratory infection. If symptoms are persistent, lasting more than two weeks, it’s likely due to allergies. Colds evolve, usually starting with a stuffy nose, throat irritation and low grade fever. Next comes the sneezing and a runny nose, with thickening mucus that often turns yellow or green. Trouble breathing, wheezing, chest tightening and often a cough that won’t stop are signs of asthma. FIND RELIEF – Parents should make an appointment with a board- certified allergist to have their child tested, diagnosed and treated for allergies and asthma. An allergist can also help a child understand what is causing their symptoms and how to avoid triggers. For children with particularly bothersome allergies, an allergist may prescribe immunotherapy (allergy shots) which can modify and prevent allergy development. Patients under the care of an allergist also have a 77 percent reduction in lost time from school. INFORM, EDUCATE AND CARRY – A child’s school, teachers and coaches should all be informed of any allergy and asthma conditions and have medications available. But the education shouldn’t stop there. Children should understand what triggers their symptoms and any warning signs to watch out for. If they are prescribed life-saving treatments, such as a rescue inhaler and epinephrine, they should know how to use their medication. Many schools allow students to carry medication, making communication between parents and the school the key to a healthier child. Dr. Raquel Watkins is a Board-Certified Allergist who treats infants, children and adults with asthma and allergies to pollen, pets, and insects as well as skin allergies. Her office is centrally located in Bartram Office Park, 13241 Bartram Park Blvd, Suite 2601 Jacksonville Fl 32258

Home Inspections by Darin Magee Owner of Florida Property Detectives Home Inspections

20

I’m always amazed when a perspective client calls our office shopping prices for their home inspection. Of course I understand why people want to save money, it’s ingrained in most us. But when you’re about to spend hundreds of thousands of dollars on a home purchase does it make sense to go cheap on the inspection? There is a saying that we're all familiar with: you get what you pay for. Now, I’m not saying that you should automatically pick the most expensive inspection company, far from it. I’m suggesting that you make your decision based on the quality of the service that you want. And you cannot expect to get the quality service that your home purchase deserves for a cheap price. How do you determine what quality is when you’re not familiar with the industry? Your first advisor should be your real estate agent. Home inspectors work in the same realm as real estate agents so agents often know what to look for in a quality inspection company. Next look at the inspection companies web site, does it look professional? The attention to detail that the company pays to it’s website may be indicative of the attention to detail that they pay to their Inspections. Lastly, call them, ask if they have full time office staff and secure payment systems. Ask them if they use the latest technology available on all their Inspections to include thermal infrared cameras. Ask them if there reports include digital and infrared photos that are electronically delivered. If they don’t offer these, don’t bother to ask for their prices, continue searching for the quality inspection company that your home purchase warrants. When you’re shopping for any service provider make sure to do your homework; look for reviews and get references. It may not always payoff to pick the most expensive but it’s never smart to pick the cheapest. The memory of the expense of a well done job will fade much faster than the annoyance of a poorly done one.

My Wife Is 20 Years Younger and Sparkling Happy Again From: John in Fruit Cove, FL

A note of praise, and thanks, for the SCULPTAFIT coaches… Nikki, please share this email with the coaches and Joey as well. Two months ago, when Alice first started her fitness and wellness sessions at your studio, I was actually very surprised. She was very reluctant in the past to try something because she was scared or insecure, and maybe rightfully so. But the more she heard about your unique and safe method, the private studio and the stories about the other women like her who were having great success there, the more interested she became in trying it. When she asked me, I was fully supportive of her to go try your free sessions, because I could see her health deteriorating, her energy dropping and her overall mood getting worse over time. On top of that, her mental clarity and her simple willingness to do fun things and travel was decreasing as these last few years have gone by. I think the last visit to her doctor for her annual physical was the extra push she needed to come start with you guys. 3 of her vitals were worse than last year and she became pre-diabetic on top of that. The doctor said “you need to do some form of exercise”.

"She Is Like a New Woman" Private parties, classes and tastings available.

So fast forward to now and I have to say, she is like a new woman; the woman I knew from years ago. She’s sharp again, can do so many things, her body is changing, her posture is beautiful, her energy is incredible (during the day or nighttime, lol) and she has this happy sparkle in her eyes that reminds me why I fell for her years ago.

Our kids are ecstatic about her rejuvenation because we have grandkids and we plan to spend more time with them, especially as they grow and become more active. We want to be around for them and be able to do things with them. What’s great is that she now knows she is in control of her health and longevity, and your team has made this all possible. I don’t know what else she could have tried that would have worked for her like this. Even better is that all our friends are noticing the changes and 2 of her friends have already gotten started with you as well. You really have something special going on there and we are forever grateful that you are local. We are so excited about the present and very enthusiastic about the future. Many blessings to the whole team and all the lives you touch. With many thanks, John in Fruit Cove

Creekside Cross Country Reigning State Champions Set to Do it Again!

On a beautiful August morning recently St. Johns Magazine stopped by the Creekside High school track to talk to the number one boys cross country team in Florida! The team has been State Champions for two years in a row, an amazing accomplishment. Every morning the team gets up to practice at 6:15am before school starts. They work hard but that is only one aspect of how they have achieved champion status. When it comes to winning, the boys said their team is like a family. At the center of this sense of cohesion is Coach Eric Frank, who keeps them on target, with inspiring speeches and an attitude of connection. Seniors and varsity team members Nick Marescot and Ethan Hammett spoke highly of Coach Frank. “He is the most dedicated coach I have ever known”, they said. One of Coach Frank's mottos is "R2R" or "ready to race" . It is written on their team t-shirt but also embedded in their minds, building a solid mental foundation for their future. He says it means, "each day at practice we are striving to be ready to meet the day, ready to race to our fullest potential." Coach Frank is a St. Johns native, having been a distance runner on the Nease team back in the day. He is entering his 10th year as the Cross Country coach at Creekside. The team also creates camaraderie by attending events together including a yearly one-week running camp in Brevard, North Carolina. After winning two consecutive State Championships the boys say Coach Eric Frank & winning this year is less of a goal and more of an expectation. Even though Assistant Coach Nate Perez, Aslo, Coach Chris Navarro the team dynamics have changed with many of last year’s star seniors (Assistant Coach, not presgone, they say maintaining their championship status is still attainable. ent) Coach Frank agrees: "This year’s team has a lot of potential and its built on Trust, Relentless Effort, and brotherhood. I believe if you can get everyone on the team to buy into those three core values then the possibility of success are endless." Upcoming local meets Bartram Trail September 2nd & Ponte Vedra September 16th

The Perfect Bite

Unique Reviews By Lori Allen A Local Foodie

Enza's Italian Restaurant So us Northerners like to discuss (ie argue LOL) who has the best Italian restaurants, Little Italy or Boston’s Northend. There has never been an agreement on which one prevails but we are always looking for places that mimic those great Italian places. Well Enza’s Italian Restaurant I think is one of those that is close as it gets in our area. From the quaint piano in the corner to the long winding inviting bar you feel like you have just been transported back up North. You are greeted by warm friendly faces and if you are lucky you will even get a special welcome from this wonderful man in a pin striped suit that makes you feel just like family! If this isn’t typical Boston Northend I don’t know what is! So tonite for us was family/framily nite and we brought the kids and decided to try whatever sounded good on the menu. For Apps we started off with some of their calamari, fried ravioli and meatball (this was a special for the evening). Normally when you think of fried ravioli you think of some crunchy pasta filled with a filling that’s kinda bland and then some kind of red sauce to dip it in. But I was so impressed with these tidbits of flavor. Our waitress (Edna-she was awesome!) suggested that we try both the cheese and the meat ones and get them cut in half which was a great idea for sharing. The meat ones were stuff with what tasted like ground veal and lots of seasonings and the cheese ones had some nice fresh ricotta in them. The breading wasn’t that heavy kind it was light and they were soft to bite into not crunchy and stiff. To dip them you got some super fresh marinara that was so vibrant with fresh tomatoes, basil and garlic flavors you wanted to dip more and more. So on to the meat ta ball (think like..Now that’s’ ah meat ta ball in your best Italian impression) because this thing really calls for it. It is huge! The meat mixed with all those Italian herbs is so tender you can cut it with a fork. It comes with this rich creamy ricotta oozing down the sides of it sitting in a plate of some of that fresh marinara sauce that makes you just wants to lick the plate! The Enza salad is a meal in itself! It is filled with roasted red peppers, tons of olives; green, Kalamata, black you name it they are in there! Then they cover the fresh greens with this slightly sweet garlicky homemade vinaigrette along with the fresh

crumbled feta. Your mouth is just is filled with garlicky, roasted red pepper, olive and so much more flavor. For those that don’t like vinaigrette they make their own Blue cheese dressing. It’s well worth a try and of course I had to get side just so I could dip some of my salad in there for total mouth bomb of flavor! For the main dish my son went for their homemade Alfredo. I have just recently introduced him to the creamy goodness a change from the usual mac n cheese. Well this one I fear has spoiled him from many others. Once you’ve had the best ..just sayin…. The heavy cream, tons of parmesan and creaminess of the sauce had him protecting his bowl so that Mama could barely get her fork in there! But once I did oh man the creaminess and cheesiness of it was so good! My hubby gets the same thing every time we go to an Italian restaurant and Enzas didn’t disappoint him. As a matter of fact they far exceeded his expectations. He said it was the best lasagna he has had in a very long time. You could taste their tangy homemade sauce mixed in with fresh ricotta, beef and mozzarella – mozzarel is how the Italians say it..layers upon layers of gooiness goodness. Our framily had the Shrimp Francesca, and after all the appetizers this was the perfect meal. Big tender shrimp light battered in an egg type batter deep fried and then served with a lemony tarty sauce. YUM. I of course had to have a sampling of pastas. I had their carbonara which is my personal favorite and theirs was awesome. Fun Fact: This dish forms part of a family of dishes involving pasta with bacon, cheese, and pepper, such as spaghetti alla gricia. And it is very similar to the southern Italian pasta cacio e uova, dressed with melted lard and mixed eggs and cheese. The pasta is cooked and the pork is fried in fat. Then a mixture of raw eggs, grated hard cheese, and ground black pepper is combined with the hot pasta away from direct heat to avoid curdling the egg. Then the fried pork is added, and the mixture is tossed which creates a creamy sauce. Guanciale is the most commonly used meat for the dish in Italy, but pancetta, prosciutto and bacon is used as well. For the cheese Romano, or occasionally Parmesan is used. I am not sure what version Enza’s uses but their pasta is so luscious from the egg, salty from prosciutto and

very creamy. Yes its decadent but OH so worth it! On the lighter side I also had some Spaghetti aglio e olio (garlic and olive oil) which is a traditional Italian pasta coming from Naples. Enza’s tossed in some sun dried tomatoes and some marinated artichoke hearts which really gave it an earthier flavor. I always ask for angel hair pasta for this because its keeps it nice and light for me. For those that want a lighter option get a side of this along with Enzas salad and call it a day. You won’t be disappointed! There are so many homemade dinner options on the menu I am sure you will have a tough time choosing. For the grand finale we got a tasting of a cannoli and tiramisu which was my favorite desert here at Enza’s. Tiramisu which typically is mascarpone custard layered with whipped cream and rum and coffee soaked ladyfingers. It was so light but just enough of the sweet that you are craving. There was not a drop left at our table that’s for sure. Mangiare!

PetCure Oncology, SEVO-Med Have New Life-Changing Cancer Care for Local Pets

Caption: Southeast Veterinary Oncology and Internal Medicine (SEVO-Med), is now the first private clinic in northeast Florida to offer stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) in the treatment of pet cancers. SEVO-Med, in conjunction with PetCure Oncology, recently installed the SRS treatment machine at its clinic in Orange Park. SRS dramatically reduces the number of cancer treatments necessary compared to traditional radiation – and allows SEVO-Med to treat some cancers that were untreatable before in pets.

Southeast Veterinary Oncology and Internal Medicine (SEVO-Med), which specializes in treating cancer and other serious internal diseases in pets, has become the first private clinic in northeast Florida to offer a new, life-changing cancer treatment for pets. Known as stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS), this leading-edge technology dramatically reduces the cancer treatments necessary compared to traditional radiation – and allows SEVO-Med to treat some cancers that were untreatable before in pets. In partnership with national cancer care provider PetCure Oncology, the industry leader in radiation oncology for pets and the leading provider of veterinary SRS, SEVO-Med’s clinic in Orange Park is now providing SRS in addition to the wide range of cancer care options previously available. SRS has emerged as a standard of care in human oncology over the last few decades, but has only recently become available in veterinary med¬icine. Less than 20 specialty centers across the country possess the technology and clinical expertise to provide SRS for pets. Dr. Tracy LaDue, a double-board certified veterinary specialist in radiation oncology and medical oncology, is well-regarded for her high level of veterinary care and compassionate support for pet families. She has been a practicing radiation oncologist for nearly two decades, and she has been treating Jacksonville-area pets with cancer since founding SEVO-Med in 2004. “I’m so proud that SEVO-Med and PetCure are working together to bring this amazing cancer treatment to pets in Florida,” Dr. LaDue said. “SRS is a game-changer that will have a tangible impact on the lives of pets and their families. We will be able to treat a wider variety of tumors, and offer more encouraging prognoses. We’ll also be able to do so with fewer treatment sessions, fewer side effects, and with a greater impact on the pet’s

quality of life.” With SRS, pets will only have to undergo one-to-three treatments compared to perhaps 20 or more cancer treatments that were required with traditional radiation. In addition to reducing treatment sessions and anesthetic events by 80 to 95 percent, SRS also means minimal side effects, and typically immediate improvement to quality of life for the pet being treated. The progressive cancer care offered by PetCure Oncology at SEVO-Med is already making a difference in the lives of pets and their families across the country. PetCure Oncology centers have treated nearly 1,000 pets with cancer in just over two years of operation. Two-thirds of all PetCure clients have elected to pursue SRS as their preferred treatment option, taking advantage of its unprecedented precision. SRS has also emerged as a viable treatment option for some cancers previously considered “untreatable” based on its ability to target tumors embedded in complex locations. “PetCure Oncology is committed to providing pets with access to the same innovative cancer treatment options available in human medicine,” said Scott Milligan, CEO of PetCure Oncology. “We are also committed to collaborating with like-minded care providers that share our philosophy of exceptional care, empathetic support, and clinical research. We couldn’t ask for a better partner than SEVO-Med to help us connect with pet owners in the southeastern United States.” Visit www.sevomed.com under the treatment tab to find out more about SRS and the other services provided by SEVO-Med – with clinics in Orange Park and Jacksonville.

Thanks to a new partnership with PetCure Oncology, our ability to care for pets with cancer is greater than ever before. We now offer stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS), the latest in advanced radiation therapy.

A Message From The Vet With Dr. Kathleen Deckard, DVM Pets R Family Veterinary Hospital

Does My Pet Need

Pet Insurance? Pet insurance is a tool to help pet parents pay unexpected veterinary bills during times of accident or illness, so you have help covering the costs and can get the best care for your pet. Like the health care market for people, the cost of providing quality care for dogs, cats and other pets has gone up. In many ways, this is a good thing. Veterinary medicine increasingly employs more modern techniques, preventative drugs and medicines that help keep the standard of living high for our pets. Insurance allows you to make better decisions on the care for your pet without having to worry as much about the costs. The insurance company does not dictate what your veterinarian can and can’t do to treat your pet. This gives you the ability to follow your veterinarian’s recommended course of treatment knowing that your pet health insurance will help provide you with financial peace of mind. Pet health insurers provide several basic types of pet insurance policies and upgrades. Many companies offer a variety of deductibles which affects the cost of the premiums. Basic policies gener-

ally cover treatment for accidents, injuries and illnesses. Other policies are available that offer coverage for basic medical care, vaccinations and wellness care along with other routine preventative care. The cost of the policy is dependent on the age of the pet, the breed of the pet and what deductible and plan you are choosing. Carefully evaluate when looking at the various types of insurance at the following details: • What exactly does my policy cover? Exams, medications, surgeries, supplements, chemotherapy, etc. • What are the pre-existing conditions that it won’t cover? (Keep in mind that the earlier in life you get the policy, the less of a chance that your pet will have any pre-existing conditions). • Can your coverage work at both your regular vet and a specialist? Does your deductible only work for one and then start over when you go to a specialist? • Is there a maximum allowed for an individual condition? Does it ever start over or is

it a lifetime maximum? • What hereditary or congenital conditions does the policy exclude (some based on the breed of your pet)? • How are you reimbursed? Do you have to pay the veterinarian up front and wait for payment from the insurance company? Does the insurance company pay the vet at checkout and you pay the your portion? Once pet insurance is explained, the most common question pet owners have is whether or not they need it. This is a highly personal question that has to do with your financial abilities, and how you would handle a sudden expense for your dog, cat or other pet. In general, I find that people who have pet insurance feel that it is a good investment. I recommend that you talk to your veterinarian about which insurance company they recommend to help you choose wisely. Dr. Kathleen Deckard, owner of Pets R Family Veterinary Hospital (904-452-PETS)
