Live the St. Johns Lifestyle

Make the Move to Shearwater

F

inding the perfect home comes with plenty of exciting decisions for your family to make. Shearwater, a master-planned community, was meticulously designed for today’s way of life with every family in mind. As one of the fastest-growing communities in St. Johns County, Shearwater continues to meet the needs of current and future residents, while remaining true to its vision of fostering healthy living, community engagement and a connection to the outdoors. So, why make the move? Premium Location Just 20 minutes from Florida’s Histor-

8

ic Coast, Shearwater is located in the heart of St. Johns County within close proximity to everyday conveniences such as grocery stores and schools, as well as a variety of cultural, sport and entertainment opportunities in two major cities: Jacksonville and St. Augustine. Shearwater is just down the road from Johns Creek Center and another growing retail shopping center, the Pavilion at Durbin Park. Shearwater residents can easily access these commercial retail centers which includes numerous well-known stores such as Walmart, Home Depot and Publix. The area continues to grow even more

with lifestyle retailers, restaurants and entertainment options. Jacksonville is a metropolis where you can cheer on sports teams like the Jaguars and the Icemen or enjoy world-class entertainment at venues like the Florida Theatre, Daily’s Place, Jacksonville Veteran’s Memorial Area or the Jacksonville Symphony Hall. And experience the arts at the Cummer Museum or the Museum of Contemporary Art. It’s a dynamic city with major employment hubs, international transportation and logistics, 22 miles of beaches and a burgeoning culinary scene.

St. Augustine is a seaside community that blends historic ambiance with thoroughly modern shops, restaurants and more. At this staycation destination, just down the road from Shearwater, residents are able to visit iconic monuments and museums while experiencing recreation at some of Northeast Florida’s favorite culinary spots, attractions and world-class golf courses.

Better Schools, Better Future School is back in session and Shearwater’s students will continue to access excellent schools. St. Johns County was recently rated by Niche as the #1 Best School District in Florida according to Niche’s 2020 Best School Districts. Shearwater’s youngest residents are zoned for the following schools: Timberlin Creek Elementary, Switzerland Point Middle School, and Bartram Trail High School. Timberlin Creek Elementary, is located within the Shearwater community – just a short walk away for residents and their children. Switzerland Point Middle School serves grades 6-8 and seeks to empower all students with a passion for

learning and deep empathy for others. Bartram Trail High School offers students the choice between a curriculum or specialized training tailored to each student’s interests and aptitudes. Resort-Style Amenities Shearwater is committed to providing its residents with the very best in world-class amenities. The Kayak Club, Shearwater’s amenities epicenter, includes a large clubhouse, an expansive Fitness Lodge, lap pool, resort-style pool, the longest lazy river in Northeast Florida, “The Perch” 3-story waterslide tower, playground, sports fields and four illuminated HarTru tennis courts. Residents can begin their days running or jogging the 15 miles of trails throughout Shearwater before heading over to The Hub, a Wi-Fi café within the Kayak Club. The Hub serves grab-n-go food items as well as provides a gathering space for residents to spend time with neighbors. The Falls neighborhood recently debuted several new amenities, including Falls Park; the Falls loop trail that enhances the community’s already robust trail network; Shearwater’s first dog park, which includes one

fenced park for large dogs and one for smaller dogs; and a community garden for residents to plant flowers, herbs and vegetables year-round. Falls Park, Shearwater’s newest and most expansive park, is centrally located in the heart of Shearwater and offers four-acres worth of outdoor opportunities including a lake overlook pavilion, shaded picnic pavilion, a tot lot, an event lawn and multi-purpose paved pathways. Total Lifestyle Experience The Shearwater lifestyle is more than just great amenities, it’s about bringing those amenities to life by integrating them with a variety of activities that bring neighbors closer together. As the full-time Lifestyle Director for Shearwater, Dylan Read leads the community’s unique approach to lifestyle programming and activities. From day one, Read works with Shearwater families directly to develop events and activities that fit their interests, ranging from casual coffee dates and specific fitness classes to community concerts and holiday events.

NEW WOLFSON CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL EMERGENCY CENTER COMING TO BAPTIST MEDICAL CENTER SOUTH

The 8,100-square-foot Wolfson Children’s ER

Designed to serve the fast-growing area of Jacksonville with top-ranked care just for children Families in the fast-growing area of south Jacksonville that includes northern St. Johns County will soon have convenient access to specialized pediatric emergency care from Wolfson Children’s Hospital. Integrated into the state-of-the-art Baptist Medical Center South campus, the full-service Wolfson Children’s ER will bring the expertise of the top-ranked children’s hospital close to home for area families with children of all ages. The 8,100-square-foot Wolfson Children’s ER will be a separate facility, with its own parking area, entrance, check-in and triage area, family restrooms and 12room unit dedicated entirely to children and families. Construction is expected to be completed later this year. “Everything about our new Wolfson Children’s Emergency Center at Baptist South will be designed to provide worldclass pediatric emergency care close to home,” said Michael D. Aubin, president of Wolfson Children’s Hospital. Wolfson Children’s Emergency Center at Baptist South will be staffed by a

team comprised of double-board-certified pediatric emergency physicians, emergency nurses, respiratory therapists and radiologic technologists, all connected with the larger team of pediatric specialists at the downtown Wolfson Children’s Hospital, 24/7. The ER will be outfitted with equipment specially designed for children. “With our new Children’s Emergency Center, we are combining the exceptional care Baptist South already provides to local families with the implementation of specialized pediatric protocols available at Wolfson Children’s Hospital. Bringing our strengths together will further enhance our services and provide an even better patient and family experience,” said Nicole Thomas, president of Baptist Medical Center South. Darin Roark, vice president of ambulatory campuses and Baptist Health system emergency departments, said construction of the Wolfson Children’s Emergency Center is the culmination of years of planning and listening to the voices of parents.

Wolfson Children’s Hospital is one of only 13 children’s hospitals ranked in the nation as a Leapfrog Top Hospital and is the only state-designated Pediatric Trauma Center in Northeast Florida. There are five emergency centers located throughout the greater Jacksonville area, The parking lot on the south side of Baptist South will be closed during construction. Patients and visitors to the Baptist South Emergency Center should continue to park in Lot A, directly in front of the ER entrance. The visitor garage is also available for patients and visitors.

Roark said, “Parents told us they wanted the specialized emergency care from Wolfson Children's to be close by. They asked for a dedicated space with its own parking, and most of all, a kid-friendly environment to take the fear out of going to the ER. We listened, and we are thrilled to bring all this and more to the Baptist South campus.”

HOME DECOR

New Build Design Trends

by Kelly Wissinger local interior Designer & owner of Changing Spaces Jax

A

s a designer I have to keep up with trends and so do a lot of research which includes trips to the model homes (I know - how awful!) There are so many new homes in our area (St Johns County being one of the fastest growing counties in the US) with builders competing in providing the best finishes and the latest technology. I personally like to keep design classic as trends are always changing, especially if it is not your ‘forever’ home as not everyone has the same taste as you. Also, changing your mind often can get expensive. Here are some styles that I am continuing to see in my research of new builds:

14

Quartz countertops - Yes it’s man-made, but the choices are endless and the maintenance free qualities are very appealing even though it is on the more expensive side. Accent walls - Some designers say they have had their time, but I saw a lot of ‘feature walls’ with shelves, brick, tile and panelling from bedroom and bathroom walls to TV walls and everywhere in between.

Open floor plans - They are more popular than ever; it keeps spaces light and airy, and people are focusing on spending time together making the most out of this tech-driven society.

Wood floors - A lot of people are opting for vinyl (wood look) floors for their value and comfort, but you can’t beat the real thing, especially for resale, and depending on the vinyl it can sometimes cost just as much! The tones of wood are more on the lighter side, which look great and airy, but who knows how long this trend will last? So if it’s not your forever home I advise to stick with medium tones again, it’s classic.

Bringing the outdoors in and vice-versa - Using multiple sliders/ bifold patio doors and lots of windows allowing for more natural light and expansion of the living area.

Master bathrooms - Builders are replacing shower/tub combos with separate walk-in showers, and free-standing tubs, making it the focal point.

Smart technology - Installation of Smart home technology is becoming more popular with added safety/ security cameras and energy efficient features such as lights turning off when you leave, and sprinkler systems and thermostats being accessed while away at the touch of a button. There also seems to be a lot of mudrooms off the garage, large walkin pantries, and lots of little nooks, window seats, and under the stairs hide aways. Whether you are building a custom home or renovating an existing one, I hope you have fun with your selections!

Upgrade Your Builder Grade Lighting by Josh Longino, Showroom Manager, Stewart Lighting It’s your dream home. It’s gorgeous. You love everything about it... except the lighting. Maybe you’re not satisfied with the quality of your new home’s builder grade lighting, or perhaps the style and design of your light fixtures does not match your taste. Stewart Lighting in Jacksonville has been helping local families find the perfect lighting for their homes since 1975.

less integration with home automation. Ceiling fans, like lighting, range in style from contemporary to farmhouse and are available in indoor and outdoor models. Exterior fans are UL rated for damp or wet locations. With the harsh Florida climate, a wet-rated fan is going to perform better and last longer.

"We know that lighting can set the tone for a space with one quick glance, and we upgrade lighting and fans for homeowners each and every day," says our owner, Greg Stewart. "One of the greatest benefits we offer is our ALA certified design consultants who are trained and experienced in creating stylish spaces with an appropriate lighting scale.”

LED -

Listed below is a guide to help you decide on the perfect interior and exterior lighting to allow your personality to shine through and transform your space.

Lighting Fixtures -

Lighting has become an integral part of designing a home. Whether your home’s design is coastal, rustic or modern, it’s important to select a fixture that fits into your design. Choosing the right size fixture for your home can be challenging, so be sure to consider the room size and ceiling height when making your selection. The function of a room will determine the amount of light you need. Some rooms require task lighting and others need ambient lighting so think about how you will be using the light in each space. Selecting fixtures that flow and coordinate throughout each room will result in a truly personalized dream space.

Ceiling Fans - Living in Florida, quality fans are a must have in

our homes. Technology in fans has improved drastically in recent years. Using the latest in DC motor technology, fans are running quieter and more efficiently than ever. These motors allow fans to move more air and use less energy than previous models. Manufacturers have begun to incorporate WiFi technology to allow seam-

18

Using LED technology is a great way to cut down on your energy bill and reduce your carbon footprint. LED bulbs last up to 50 times longer than an incandescent bulb and consume a quarter of the energy. And unlike compact fluorescents, LEDs do not contain harmful mercury. All LED fixtures are not created equally. Check the warranty and rated life to ensure that you’re getting the best product available. The color scheme in your home should also be considered when selecting the color temperature and lumens of your LED recessed cans and under-cabinet lighting.

Outdoor Lighting - Choosing correctly sized outdoor lanterns can seem difficult. Homeowners tend to worry about lanterns being too big, but actually slightly over scaling is better. It’s also important to consider quality of materials when selecting outdoor lighting. Aluminum and resin are great affordable options, but copper and brass are the most sustainable as they will age naturally and weather well in our climate. Whether you prefer in-home or in-store consultation, Stewart Lighting will provide assistance in fixture selection, placement, sizing and performance. Our experts can help you determine the right products for your home and we pride ourselves on quality customer service. We look forward to helping you light a space you’ll love. Remember, it’s your dream home and it’s gorgeous. You should love everything about it, including the lighting. For more information visit www.stewartlighting.com

Going Dutch: By Eric Rakov ST. JOHNS COUNTY STUDENTS PARTICIPATE IN INTERNATIONAL EXCHANGE WITH THE NETHERLANDS

I

nstead of the traditional summer camp, 11 middle schoolers from St. John’s and Duval Counties got to spend two weeks in the Netherlands with host families as part of Children’s Summer International Village (CISV) Interchange Program. While in the Netherlands, each US delegate was paired up with an Interchange partner of the same age and interests who they lived with and were basically treated like a member of the family. Each delegation was also accompanied by a team of CISV youth leaders from their home country to help organize activities and liaison with the parents overseas (the youth did not bring cell phones on their trip).

striking difference between the US and the Netherlands was the prolific use of bicycles and public transportation. “It’s easy for kids there to travel and walk around; here, we have to have our parents drive everywhere because there is not really any public transportation”.

At the conclusion of the two weeks, the US delegates returned home and in turn welcomed their 11 Dutch Interchange counterparts to stay with their family in Northeast Florida. Throughout the Interchange program, kids alternated between facilitated group activities facilitated by their delegations’ youth leaders, and also had “family time” to enjoy typical summer activities with their host families such as hiking, touring, visiting amusement parks, attending sports events, shopping, the beach or other everyday activities.

When asked what else surprised him about his visit overseas, Drew remarked, “I was surprised about how nice and open they were… after a couple of days, I felt like I knew them for years and could tell them anything”.

Drew Bak, an 8th-grader at Fruit Cove Middle School who spent 2 weeks with his Interchange partner’s family in Bussum (just outside of Amsterdam) noted that a

22

Drew’s Dutch counterpart, Floris (who is bilingual) also remarked on the differences he noticed when experiencing life as an American teen for two weeks. “They can’t bike to places… they have to rely more on their parents to get from place to place.” As for the Florida attire? “They wear different clothes… shorts and tee shirts because of the weather.”.

The Dutch CISV Interchange delegation said their farewells and headed back to the Netherlands on August 7th. Thanks to modern technology, these students will remain friends and continue to be a part

of each others’ lives for years to come, and will always have a “home away from home” when they travel abroad again. CISV is a non-profit group that relies 100% on volunteers, with a mission to educate and inspire action for a more just and peaceful world. The Jacksonville Chapter of CISV is one of the most active, and hosts Interchange as well as facilitates many other youth camps and programs which all have the common goal to promote world peace through international friendships. Camps and programs are designed for youth ages 11 - 18. More information about CISV Jacksonville can be found at http://jacksonville.cisvusa.org.

any people might be interested to learn more about a popular new way to enhance their beauty known by buzzwords including, microblading, permanent makeup, ombré brows, hair strokes or tattooed eyebrows. But most people don’t know the difference between them or how dramatic the results can be. Terri Rampone, Owner of Nouveau Image Permanent Makeup in Palencia says clients consider permanent makeup for many reasons. “Lack of eyebrow hair, over tweezing, unsteady hands that can no longer apply eyeliner evenly, visual impairment, and even time can be an important factor. If you cannot draw your eyebrows on every morning, permanent makeup is a solution. Even color loss in lips can be restored that no longer have a visible vermillion border. Some clients who suffer from trichotillomania (the unconscious pulling of hair), alopecia or hair loss due to chemotherapy can benefit greatly from permanent makeup”. Terri’s main goal is to help her clients look and feel wonderful about themselves by finding permanent make-up solutions. The end result can be years of amazing, maintenance-free beauty. Is Microblading Permanent Makeup and is Permanent Makeup a Tattoo? The answer is Yes and Yes! Once pigment is placed in the skin it is considered a tattoo. Microblading is a technique that

26

uses a blade to penetrate the skin while pulling across the surface to deposit pigment creating a single hairstroke. The name is given because of the devise used. Hairstrokes are very popular and microblading has become the new buzzword. Traditional tattooing using a rotary or digital machine can give you the same hairstroke effect as it has been for the past several decades. It’s the size of the needle used by the experienced technician.

to consider is artist training and abilities. There are many different techniques, tools and devises used with a high skill level as well. Artists who have extensive training in permanent makeup using machine devises, can offer options such as Permanent Eyeliner, Lips, 3D Areola and even Scar Camouflage. All these procedures are advanced procedures. Some technicians are trained in a single method and can only give you one look. The desired look should always be based on your skin type, age, texture and more. The shape should first accent then complement your facial features. It’s advised to research your technician to determine if their training is suitable for your desired outcome.

School Culture

Kickin’ it with Northern St. Johns School Sports by Mikayla Lindenfeld

With the kick-off of the school year comes another very exciting beginning: school sports! Student athletes all over the county are looking forward to getting back into the swing of things. A few St. Johns county students are excited to share about the upcoming season with their sports team.

Sean Flaherty is a swimmer at Creekside

High School. He has practice for two hours every morning before school preparing for the upcoming meets. He is beyond excited for the Creekside vs. Bartram meet, mostly because he is ready to “kick their butt this year!” Sean and his teammates at Creekside have been working very hard and are enthusiastic about the upcoming season.

Jacob Kauzlarich is on the Cross

Country team at Bartram Trail. This year, the team moved from the 3A to 4A division, along with a few other schools, including their toughest competitors: Nease and Creekside. The team builds off their successes throughout the season until they eventually compete at the state meet in November. Jacob and his teammates are a family, and he is very optimistic about the team’s performance this year.

Alexa Machols is the captain of the

Bartram Trail High School Dance Team. Football season has finally begun and she is pumped to be able to perform on the sidelines. She will also take her team to \ New York for a competition in the Spring. The dance team practices constantly, before school, after school, and they even go home and practice some more! Alexa loves her role of captain, and claims, “I love be-

ing able to work with such a talented and dedicated group of young ladies as we have on BTDT.”

Tyler Leonard is a varsity cheerleader at Ponte Vedra High School. She is looking forward to cheering under the Friday Night Lights, especially homecoming week. She is confident that this year her team can make it to UCA Nationals for the first time in PVHS cheer history! The team practices very often, but fortunately, Tyler explains, “…my teammates are my sisters and I am so thankful that I spend so much time with them in and outside of the gym.” Tommy Zitiello plays strong safety and wide receiver for Ponte Vedra High School. He is excited for football games to begin against seasoned rivals, such as Nease. At Ponte Vedra, the standard on the football team is “we not me,” which shows how invested the team is in each other as a whole. Tommy says he enjoys being a senior on the team and making a difference as a leader. It is a very exciting time for school sports, and it is only just the beginning! These student athletes have a lot of work ahead of them, but they are all confident that they are going into a season they will never forget.

How Safe is Your Water? by Tom Casey, America’s Most Awarded Contractor

70% of Earth is covered with water, but only 1% is fresh and usable. You shower in it. You cook with it. You chug it after a workout. Everybody knows you need water for life itself.

FREE WATER TEST

Water that's safe to drink should ideally be clear with no odor or funny taste. One sign that water is potentially contaminated is to look for cloudiness. While cloudy water doesn't necessarily mean it’s dangerous to your health, but it could signal the presence of unsafe contaminants. Water with any type of discoloration is generally not good; different colors indicate different potential issues. The best way to know is to test, not guess, typically two tests; Ph and TDS (total dissolved solids).

A Message From The Vet by Dr. Deckard, DVM

Pet Insurance

With Dr. Kathleen Deckard, DVM, Pets R Family Veterinary Hospital

A

s the cost of quality healthcare increases for people, so it does for quality veterinary care as well. Veterinary medicine increasingly employs more modern techniques, equipment, and preventative drugs that help keep the quality of living high for our pets. Pet insurance is a tool to potentially help with unexpected costs of illnesses or accidents with our pets and can give pet owners the means to make better decisions for veterinary care, without having to worry as much about the costs. Over the last decade or so, the pet insurance market has changed so that coverage for your pet can be as simple or as comprehensive as you would like it to be. Like our own healthcare, pet insurance companies charge a monthly premium based on the coverage type you choose. Many companies offer a variety of premiums and deductibles that are tailored to the procedures and diagnoses covered. Basic policies generally cover treatment for accidents, injuries and illnesses. Other policies are available that offer coverage for basic medical care and vaccinations, along with other routine preventative care. The good news is, the insurance company does not dictate what your veterinarian can and can’t do to

treat your pet. This gives you the ability to follow your veterinarian’s recommended course of treatment knowing that your pet health insurance will help provide you with financial peace of mind. But like many human healthcare policies, some insurance companies do have exclusions for pre-existing conditions, so it’s a great idea to get your pet enrolled in the pet insurance while they are young and healthy. When choosing a pet policy, you certainly want to evaluate the premium and the deductible and choose something affordable to you. Keep in mind, most of the deductibles must be met for every new chief complaint; in other words, you pay a deductible for a broken bone, and then you pay another deductible for an upset stomach, or an ear infection- and many deductibles are reset annually. Be sure to understand what your policy covers, and if the premiums and deductibles will change as your pet ages. Once you understand the details of your pet insurance, the most common question pet owners have is whether or not they really need it. This is a highly personal question that has to do with your financial abilities, and how you would handle a sudden expense for your dog, cat or other pet.

$50 off

Your veterinarian can help you decide if pet insurance would be a good investment. In general, it is. For purebred dogs that can have a host of hereditary problems and chronic diseases such as English bulldogs, there is no question that it’s worth it. There are many insurance companies out there, and they all have different benefits. All but one require you to pay the veterinary costs in full up front and reimburse you; Trupanion Insurance is the only company currently that can work with your veterinarian and pay directly to them upon check out, greatly reducing your immediate out-of-pocket expense. Check with your veterinarian to see what companies they would recommend, and if they have experience with any of them. Investing in pet insurance can certainly benefit pet owners and veterinarians alike, but the real winner is our pets, as insurance may help provide the best possible care for them should an unexpected illness or accident occur.
