Could it be a hernia? 8 silent signs

The signs of a hernia are not always obvious. Most common is a bulge in the abdomen, but here are some other symptoms that you may be more likely to ignore: • Pain in the pelvic area

• Constipation

• Feeling full and bloated

• Nausea and vomiting

• Weakness and muscle fatigue

• Heartburn

• Fever

in the upper leg or groin

• Pain when lifting or coughing

If left untreated, your hernia could grow, get more painful, or even become dangerous at some point. And a hernia won’t go away on its own. The good news is, today’s minimally invasive hernia treatment options, including robotic-assisted surgery, can offer you fast recovery.

YMCA

Rebuilding, Repurposing, & Reimagining Possibility

By Connie Smith, First Coast YMCA Director of Community Integrated Health Programs

Learn how the LIVESTRONG® Program at the YMCA leads adult cancer survivors to a stronger self and recovery

A

major concern for cancer survivors is returning to physical activity after treatment, which can significantly weaken them physically and emotionally. Recovery looks different for every survivor, so it’s important they have resources to get connected with others who have been through similar experiences and professionals who know how to help. LIVESTRONG® at the YMCA is a free, evidence-based program dedicated to helping cancer survivors get back on track and reach their full recovery potential. Through the combination of fitness routine and emotional support, the First Coast Y team is prepared to lead survivors through their journeys by rebuilding their spirits, minds and bodies in a safe and supportive environment. “When we first started the program, people came in and were a little shy in the gym and were worried about what they could do and how they would fit in,” said trainer Mary Airheart. “In a very, very short time, they built a great community together.” Mark Ferry was one of those participants who was apprehensive at first but quickly embraced the program. “I would say to anybody who wants to get back into working out, this is a great introductory program because these instructors know their stuff and they move

you right along and you feel confident,” Mark said. LIVESTRONG® at the YMCA works with certified fitness instructors trained in cancer survivorship, post-rehabilitation exercise and supportive cancer care. They create personalized exercise plans for each cancer survivor. Those regimens help survivors regain their strength and endurance, increase flexibility, utilize their ability to overcome challenges, expand their support network and decrease cancer-related fatigue. “My goal was to feel normal,” said participant Sharon Cockrell. “The cancer journey is not only physical; it's very emotional and it's very important to get back to the point where you feel like you're normal and that you can actually live a normal life. That's been the greatest impact for me.”

Vedra YMCA, YMCA at Nocatee, YMCA at Flagler Health+ Village, and Brooks Family YMCA will have openings to join its upcoming cohorts, which start on September 13th. The 12-week program consists of two 90-minute sessions each week and includes: • Exercise plans that help individuals establish a set fitness routine • Small group discussions that develop and cultivate close community connections • Ongoing evaluations before and after every session to record progress • A complimentary family membership To learn more about LIVESTRONG® at the YMCA or to support it, please contact staff at myhealth@fcmyca.org.

Plus it connects you with fellow survivors who know what you’re going through. “Mentally, you don't know what it's like to have cancer if you haven't had cancer,” said participant Julie Tugya. “So to have someone who's working out beside you who has also experienced that, it just feels kind of like we're in this really cool club.” LIVESTRONG® at the YMCA is available for all survivors, regardless of Y membership status. Why You Should File a Tax Return Although the original filing due date has passed, you may still want to file a tax return. The law provides most taxpayers with a three-year window of opportunity to claim a tax refund. If you do not file a tax return within three years, the refund becomes the property of the U.S Treasury! We have seen several cases where a taxpayer would have received a refund of $1k or more if they had filed a return within the 3-year window. First, you are required to file a tax return if your income is above a certain threshold. The 2021 filing requirements are as follows:

Even if your income is below the filing requirement, you may want to file a return. There are several refundable tax credits available to taxpayers, but you must file a return to claim them. The IRS has several online tools you can use to see if you qualify. Here are some examples why you may want to file a return:

✓If you had withholding taken from your W2 or Social Security, or paid estimated tax payments, you will only receive a refund if you file.

✓If you have not received a stimulus check, you may be able recover the stimulus on your return

✓Tax Credits! There are numerous tax credits that you may qualify for if you file a return.

Here is a listing of tax credits: a.Earned Income Tax Credit if your income is below certain thresholds. To see if you qualify, you can go to the website: .irs.gov/credits-deductions/ individuals/earned-income-tax-credit/ use-the-eitc-assistant b.Child tax credit To see if you qualify, go to irs.gov/help/ita/does-mychilddependent-qualify-for-the-child-taxcredit-or-the-credit-for-other-dependents c.Childcare expenses for children under the age of 13, you may qualify for a credit.

d. Education related tax credits. To see if you are eligible use the IRS tool here: .irs.gov/help/ita/am-i-eligible-to-claiman-education-credit e. If you purchased health insurance outside of the workplace (i.e., Obamacare), you may qualify for a tax credit. f. Tax credits are available to reimburse self-employed people couldn’t work due to COVID-related circumstances g. Tax credits are available to household employers if they paid wages related to sick and family leave h .Farmers and Fisherman can claim fuel credits for fuel purchases related to farming and commercial fishing

Feline Asthma

A Message From The Vet by Dr. Deckard, DVM, Pets R Family

asthma attacks can happen spontaneously or from an allergy and can be lifethreatening if not treated immediately.

T

heodosia, a 2 year old female spayed domestic shorthaired cat, presented last week for some symptoms of occasional coughing that has occurred over the last few months. She was also acting lethargic. Theo is owned by Faith, one of our experienced veterinary technicians. Faith had noticed some very vague symptoms that had progressed gradually. She became worried when she noticed that Theo was breathing heavy at rest. On presentation, Theo did have an increased respiratory rate and some mild wheezing which could be heard with the stethoscope. She was immediately taken to get an x-ray of her chest which showed the classic appearance of feline asthma. She was given some antibiotics and steroids and was sent home since she was stable and Faith was instructed to monitor her closely for signs of improvement. Even after just a few days, Theo was showing marked signs of improvement. Asthma is defined as an inflammatory process that causes recurring respiratory compromise that features the constriction of the airways. Physiologically, anatomically, and clinically, feline asthma and human asthma are very similar, and they can occur at any age. Acute

In cats, sometimes symptoms are mild, and it may go unnoticed for some time. Cats may have a low-grade chronic cough or exercise intolerance that may not cause immediate alarm. But when they are having a crisis, it’s usually very distinctive. Cats will breathe through an open mouth, have a rapid respiratory rate, and usually have a strong abdominal component to their breathing, as the abdomen has to work really hard to push air out. Cats who are demonstrating any of these acute signs should always be considered an emergency and taken to your vet or an after-hours emergency clinic right away. It’s important to know that acute asthma symptoms can also mimic a cardiac crisis, so heart disease is always something veterinarians are thinking about when making a diagnosis. Chest x-rays are very helpful in sorting it out, because they help us see the anatomical changes that can occur with both diseases. Occasionally, cats with asthma will have normal x-rays, so diagnosis can be a challenge. Sometimes the only way to know for sure if it is asthma is to treat for it; cats will almost always quickly respond to the treatments.

If you suspect your cat has asthma, please see your veterinarian as soon as possible to get a definitive diagnosis. At home, try to minimize the irritants in the air that can cause asthma symptoms: don’t smoke in the house or around your cat, use dust-free kitty litter, replace air filters frequently, minimize the usage of scented candles, air fresheners, heavily scented detergents, and don’t use chemical insecticides in the home. Although dogs can also have some chronic respiratory issues, asthma does not seem to be a natural clinical entity that occurs in them, but please see your veterinarian if you have concerns!

Just like in people, cats with asthma are treated with bronchodilators to help expand the airways, antihistamines, and steroids to help calm the inflammation. They can be given in pill form, injection form, or from an inhaler. Typically, these medications can reverse a crisis within 15 minutes. Because the underlying problem with asthma is inflammation, often long-term steroids are used in either oral or inhaled form, with rescue medications kept on hand for times of flare ups. There are several brands of catfriendly inhaler chambers that make it easy to give the medication.
