Yurt Dining
The District 2026 Walnut St. Jacksonville, FL 32206 (904)240-6539 www.thedistrictspr.com
by Lori Allen *My Wandering Fork
Located in Historic Springfield, The District is a newly opened Wine Bar & Beer Lounge with a modern Art Deco inspired space. Head outside to the Peacock Garden, which features our popular Boho Yurt Lounges & plenty of outdoor seating options. Voted Jacksonville Magazine Top 50 Restaurants for our Charcuterie Board and Spinach & Artichoke Dip! Looking for something unique or something out of the ordinary? Give a Boho Yurt a try! The District located downtown in Springfield has come up with the unique concept of dining in a Yurt. I gave it a try and had a blast! Because you make your reservation online the moment you arrive you are escorted to the back of this eclectic restaurant to your private tent. As I peered inside I felt like I was transported to a scene in the Arabian Desert, from the brightly colored pillows, funny low chairs and perfectly set table you totally felt like you had stepped out of this world and into a new one. The food is top notch. I highly recommend the beef wellington or the filet and crab cake both were cooked to perfection. The Tower as they named it is an interesting shaped tower filled with your choice of Sangria, Mimosas, or wine and of course there is plenty to share. So step out of the box this season and wander downtown and give this place a try.

Family Fun in the Kitchen this Holiday Season
T
he holidays are a delightful time to share family traditions or create new ones, especially in the kitchen. This year, encourage your whole family to join in as a team on all the kitchen fun! Preparing and cooking your family holiday meal together is a great way to bond and foster teamwork in your kitchen. Depending on the age group and abilities of the family, there are several things in the kitchen that every member of the family can help do to assist with meal prepping and cooking. Turn dinner time into more quality time by finding ways for everyone to be involved. Cooking together can not only be fun and teach the whole family new skills, but also build confidence, responsibility, practice following directions, improve listening, reading, math—the benefits can go on and on. Following a recipe allows for every member in the family to be involved in one way or another. Here are a few ideas to get the whole family involved in planning, preparing and cooking your next holiday meal:
Plan the menu together ●Make a collaborative list of options for what sides to cook and serve. Ask your kids if they would rather have green bean casserole or a corn souffle if you’re determining which dishes to prepare. ●Look through recipes and make a shopping list together. Try categorizing the list by sections of the grocery store to make it easier come shopping time.
Discuss nutrition in a fun way ●Teach your family about the powers of vegetables and allow room for creativity by giving dishes superhero names such as
12
“Brainiac Beans.” By actively engaging in cooking activities, children learn about food and nutrition. ●Growing a garden is a great way to get your family excited about cooking while taking pride in something they were involved in creating. ●This is also a great opportunity to teach children proper serving sizes and the MyPlate method by allowing them to build their own plates. Check out www.choosemyplate. gov for more information and family fun nutrition activities.
Get creative ●Split up in teams and have a cooking competition or set up a race to see who can finish a certain task first- such as washing and peeling carrots, or peeling and washing shrimp.
●Let the kids choose or add the toppings to one of your dishes, like the final touch of marshmallows on the sweet potato pie, or helping to crush candy canes and pecans if that is part of the recipe. Kids will enjoy taking ownership of a dish they helped create and may even get them to try new foods. Always ensure kitchen safety by giving everyone age-appropriate tasks: little ones can do the mixing and pouring, while teenagers and adults can handle anything heavy, sharp or hot. The holidays are a great time to get the kids involved in the kitchen. Instead of stressing about preparing your next family meal, find ways to engage your kids and turn it into a fun family memory.

For Book Lovers
St. Johns Magazine
Review of Books 2021 By The Avid Reader
The Book of Magic
By Alice Hoffman
If you can get past the first few chapters which review the well known characters made famous by Hoffman’s earlier books in the series (including the film Practical Magic), and you like magical realism this book is an enjoyable read with an excellent mystery tied in. Will the Owens Family be able to remove the curse of love once and for all?
The Night She Disappeared By Lisa Jewell
Set in a quaint English town this mystery will keep you engaged and guessing from the beginning. 19 year old Tallulah goes missing leaving her young son in her mother Kim’s care. Everyone thinks she has run off or is dead but her mother knows this can't be the case. Then a newcomer to town who aslo happens to be a mystery writer starts snooping around following the story and discovers a web of conections.
The Golden Girl By Elin Hilderbrand
If you enjoy a light mystery you will love The Golden Girl. The story centers on a famous author and her family on Nantucket. After Vivi is hit by a car the local police chief investigates the murder while Vivi watches from the great beyond as her three young adult children struggle with life. The story is unique and engaging.
16
The Last Thing He Told Me
by Laura Dave
When her newish husband Owen goes missing, Hannah must put together the mystery of where he went and why he left her alone with his teenage daughter. As Hannah discovers a hidden past, she also forges a relationship with Baily that changes both their lives forever. The story is suspenseful and engaging. *This was a Reese Witherspoon Book Club pick.
Rock Paper Scissors By Alice Feeney
Adam and Amelia, a married couple whose marriage is on the rocks, travel to a converted chapel at Blackwater Loch in the Scottish Highlands. There is the spooky, abandoned place they are staying, the stranger in the cottage, the snowstorm that traps them there, the psychological tug of war between husband and wife, and years of tension about to burst. Plus the amazing plot twists will completely blindside you. This is one of the best mysteries of the year.
A Slow Fire Burning By Paula Hawkins
When a young man is found gruesomely murdered in a London houseboat, it triggers questions about three women who knew him. Laura is the troubled one-
night-stand last seen in the victim’s home. Carla is his grief-stricken aunt, already mourning the recent death of yet another family member. And Miriam is the nosy neighbor clearly keeping secrets from the police. Three women with separate connections to the victim. Three women who are – for different reasons – simmering with resentment. Expertly written and suspenseful, you will be engrossed in the lives of these odd characters and their motivations.
Malibu Rising
by Taylor Jenkins Reed
Malibu: August, 1983. It’s the day of Nina Riva’s annual end-of-summer party, and anticipation is at a fever pitch. Everyone wants to be around the famous Rivas: Nina, the talented surfer and supermodel; brothers Jay and Hud, one a championship surfer, the other a renowned photographer; and their adored baby sister, Kit. Together, the siblings are a source of fascination in Malibu and the world over—especially as the offspring of the legendary singer, Mick Riva. If you want to be transported to the Malibu of another era, and learn the backstory of an iconic family, this book is for you. It is unlike any other book as it shifts from varying perspectives and keeps your interest from beginning to end.

The Night Swim By Megan Goldin
After the first season of her true crime podcast became an overnight sensation and set an innocent man free, Rachel Krall is now a household name―and the last hope for thousands of people seeking justice. But she’s used to being recognized for her voice, not her face. Which makes it all the more unsettling when she finds a note on her car windshield, addressed to her, begging for help. As Rachel delves into the mystery of what happened to Jenny twenty years ago, she is also covering a modern rape trial, and a small town’s inability to find justice. If you love true crime podcasts, this is your next read.

The Push
By Ashley Audrain
Motherhood is not as simple as one would think in this psychological drama. Blythe Connor is determined that she will be the warm, comforting mother to her new baby Violet that she herself never had. But in the thick of motherhood’s exhausting early days, Blythe becomes convinced that something is wrong with her daughter–she doesn’t behave like most children do. Or is it all in Blythe’s head? Her husband, Fox, says she’s imagining things. The more Fox dismisses her fears, the more Blythe begins to question her own sanity, and the more we begin to question what Blythe is telling us about her life as well. Then Sam is born and everything changes. The Push will have you asking yourself, what would you do?

( 1 sugar cube, saturate with bitters, add a dash of plain water. Muddle until dissolved. Fill the glass with ice cubes and add bourbon whiskey. Top with marichino cherries and orange zest especially around the rim, then throw the orange right in to soak up the goodness, add a giant round ice cube for style and you can sip one drink for hours. (thanks Keri!)
CHRISTMAS MARTINIS
There is something festive and fun about a martini especially at Chistmas. Maybe its the glass but try these classic vodka martinis with a few holiday twists.

Dental Health

Not Your Grandma’s Dentist…
D
entistry has come a long way in the last 10 years with advancements focused on patient comfort and convenience. Today, going to the dental office is anxiety-free and quite pleasant. Let’s explore some of the ways going to the dentist has changed for the better.
COMPLETE HEALTH DENTISTRY
The role of the dentist has evolved from a “tooth-fixer” to the quarterback of his patients’ overall health. Many patients do not have much of a relationship with a primary care physician if any. Instead, they seek care from urgent care facilities. As dentists, we are fortunate to see our patients multiple times a year. A patient’s oral health is a direct indicator of his/her overall health. We get to know our patients and their medical histories. When we see changes, we can work with the patient and our medical community to address any concerns.
THE PATIENT EXPERIENCE
When you visit a dental office today, the environment is focused on patient comfort. The dental chairs themselves are more ergonomically designed, but that is just the beginning. The entire experience has
22
evolved. Specific team members are designated to getting to know each patient’s specific needs, concerns, and challenges, and then treatment can be uniquely planned. For example, perhaps the traditional smell of a dental office creates anxiety. Now, fragrant towels, or even the smell of freshly baked cookies fill the office.
TREATMENT AND TECHNOLOGY ADVANCES
The traditional approach of dentistry was to wait until the patient was in pain to do treatment. The mindset was, “If it doesn’t hurt, I must be OK.” We now understand that taking a preventive approach to dentistry keeps patients’ overall health better, procedures to a minimum, and dental costs down. Dentists often recommend “smart” toothbrushes that can help determine if a patient is brushing properly. Cavityfinding lasers are often used to find decay at the smallest level. But even with those advances, more advanced treatment may be required. Do not worry. This aspect of dentistry has exponentially changed. Did you know that patients can get a filling without a needle? There are lasers that “trick” the body into thinking it is numb. 3D imaging is also available to assist dentists with the most complex procedures to
ensure accuracy and efficiency making the procedure faster and less invasive. Want another example of efficiency? How about that a patient can get a permanent crown, bridge, etc in just one day? Dentists now have the technology to design these restorations right in their own offices. No more temporary teeth to wear (that usually and inconveniently fall out) while a far-off laboratory makes your teeth. In most cases, patients can have treatment without the need for a temporary tooth. If you or a loved one has been postponing going to the dentist because of a bad experience from years ago, please consider giving it another try. You will be pleasantly surprised. A new year is about to be upon us. Make this the year to get healthy.
