Frank & Bonnie
The Spirit of Giving Bonnie & Frank give the gift of hope this holiday season!
F
rank and Bonnie Dvoravic of Rivertown Fine Wine & Spirits are wonderful people. They truly walk the talk with their passion for helping the community through continuous support of PanCan (The Pancreatic Cancer Action Network). Bonnie is a 13 year survivor of pancreatic cancer. After Bonnie’s personal triumph over this devastating disease they decided to take action and make a difference in the lives of others by raising awareness and providing funding for important research. Each year they hold fund raising events in their store and participate in the PanCan run. The holidays are a time of giving and this year Frank and Bonnie will offer exclusive Rivertown Fine Wine & Spirits barrel bourbon, giving a portion of the proceeds to PanCan.
Q: This holiday season Rivertown is continuing to support PANCAN with unique Barrel Bourbons made specifically for Rivertown. Could you tell us a little about these special barrels? Each barrel was sampled by our staff in a blind tasting of 4 to 5 samples. Once the staff made their selection, the barrel was held in the distiller's warehouse and then bottled & labeled exclusively for RFWS. All the bourbon is bottled from that barrel for us, and we even get the empty barrel! We currently have in stock - Manifest Rye, made here locally in Jacksonville, Widow Jane 12 year old bourbon and 1792 Full Proof Bourbon that was just awarded #1 Whiskey for 2020 by Jim Murray in his latest Whiskey Bible edition. These very special selections sell out quite rapidly because of the limited supply. Coming in the next 90 - 120 days, we have a barrel of Elijah Craig 11 year old bourbon, a barrel of Barrel Bourbon - Barrel Proof and a barrel of Larceny 6 year old. And, there are more throughout 2020 that have not been finalized yet.
8
Q: How will you help PANCAN through sales of Bourbon? All of our exclusive RFWS Single Barrel selected bourbons are sold at regular retail price with a small additional donation attached for our charity. These contributions are put to good use by PANCAN in a number of ways - providing much needed awareness of pancreatic cancer, patient & caregiver support and funds for research to help find early detection testing of this terrible disease. We also sell the empty barrels for $300 $500, for which 100% goes to the charity.
Q: What makes a bourbon special? Bourbon popularity has been on the rise for the past 7-8 years. There is a new "culture" for mixed cocktails and social media has a lot to do with spreading the word. Bourbon flavor is a matter of personal preference & taste. Supply has not been meeting the demand, so the value of bourbons is increasing and so is the price.
“We would like to thank our customers - family, friends and the community for such love & support the last 13 years at RFWS, we could not have accomplished such great success without you.
Q: The company you are collaborating with is a local company. Could you tell us a little about them? Manifest Distilling is located in downtown Jax and bottles vodka, gin and rye whiskey. The barrel of Manifest Rye we have in the store was bottled, sealed, labeled & numbered by Frank and Brian, the store manager at RFWS. It was a great experience for them. The public can take tours of this distillery and learn first hand about distilled spirits from their very knowledgeable staff. It is a unique experience. Be sure to mention that RFWS sent you when you go!
Q: How has Rivertown helped PANCAN in the past? We have raised $56,000 in four years through our efforts at the store. In addition to our single barrel selections that we offer, we have also acquired rare & hard to find bottles that we sell with an added donation to PANCAN. Our annual Rare Bourbon Auction, which takes place every February, is done by sealed bid auction by item and awarded to the highest bidder. Each bidder is given the opportunity to bid on any of the listed items during the month of February. That bid is sealed in an envelope until March 1, when the envelopes are opened and the winners are announced. This is our 5th year, and will feature 15-25 extremely rare whiskeys.
The barrel of Manifest Rye we have in the store was bottled, sealed, labeled & numbered by Frank and Brian, the store manager at RFWS. Go to Manifestdistilling.com for details on the tour.
To learn more about PanCan viisit www.pancan.org
Q: What are your goals for the future? This coming year in 2020, our goal will be $25,000 to be raised by October 15th. Our fundraising achievements are culminated at Purple Stride, a 5K/Family friendly walk that is supported nationally by PANCAN in over 25 major cities. Purple Stride-Jacksonville takes place at the end of October each year at UNF. We would like to thank our customers - family, friends and the community for such love & support the last 13 years at RFWS, we could not have accomplished such great success without you. We look forward to a great year in 2020! www.stjohnsmag.com

Making Lemonade Calendar 2020 Local photographer Mindy Kerr of Nature's Child Photography has a big heart and a creative mind. She came up with an idea to support a group of parents she works with to create an amazine new calendar showing the beautiful humanity of young people and their families fighting cancer. Here is the story: So you are selling a calendar to benefit Alex's Lemonade Stand- What inspired you to do it? I've been volunteering to photograph a group retreat for moms of children with cancer for the past few years. This year, I said to myself, "self? DO SOMETHING TO HELP." So I did. Who & What does the purchase of the calendar support? Why is it important? (besides the obvious) It supports Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation,a non profit organization that changes lives through impactful research, raising awareness and supporting families to help cure pediatric cancer. (for more information on that group, please visit alexslemonade.org) Why is it important? Well, there are SEVERAL places you can help by donating to (many are listed on my fb page on the kiddo's sneak peeks, AND in the calendar)...I think the main point is HELP. 4% of government aide goes towards childhood cancer, and it's running haywire. They need more. Simple. What is the concept for each photo? What are you trying to show with the photos?
12
Awareness, empathy, human condition? I wanted to show KIDS. Kids being kids, kids sparkling from the inside out. I want people to fall in love with each kiddo the way I have, and say "HEY. I want to help this kid"...and do it. Can you also tell a little about the Mom's group that you work with? Momcology. EXCELLENT retreat for moms that have lost themselves a little bit in this journey they've had to go on with their children. It offers them a weekend of hope, of "you're not alone in your feelings", and relaxation from the stresses their under EVERY DAY. (for more information on THAT, please visit momcology.org. They also do MUCH more...go take a look! What are the details about the calendar you would like people to know? Calendars are only $20, plus shipping and tax. All proceeds will go towards Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation, and full of some of the most absolutely cutest local childhood cancer warriors around. To purchase a calendar for yourself, please visit www.natureschildpho-
tography.com/product-page/charity-calendar. Mom Kaitlin Flynn offers the details about why research funding is so important. When Mindy came up with the idea to create a Childhood Cancer Calendar, my heart soared! It's been a personal mission to raise awareness after my daughter, Evie's Retinoblastoma Diagnosis. We want our kids to not only survive but thrive after everything they've been through, and right now, that's not happening. Kids in the pediatric cancer community are at risk for Secondary Cancers, Heart Disease, Neuropathy, Hearing loss, Learning Disabilities, the list goes on and on from side effects of the very drugs that helped saved their lives. My daughter had allergic reactions during each of her chemo treatments, her entire body would swell, turn bright read and she'd scream in pain but it was our only option. The current funding rate is 4% for pediatric cancer research and as a community we can come together to raise awareness and change that! It's our job to be the voice for these kiddos. Our children deserve newer and less harsh treatment options, they deserve the world and they are worth #morethan4.

Three Steps to Youthful Skin by Kristy Robinson Manager & Esthetician BodyBrite – St. Johns Skin care is a commitment and the best results are integrated. A combination of professional treatments and a dedicated homecare regimen is the ideal combination for healthy, youthful-looking skin. There are three fundamental elements to an effective skincare regimen – Prevent, Correct, Protect.
PREVENT Atmospheric aggressors like UVA/UVB, infrared radiation, pollution, and visible light can lead to visible signs of accelerated skin aging. Fortunately there are treatments and products that can neutralize oxidative damage. • Cleanse and tone daily with products that lift impurities and oils and address the key needs of your specific skin concerns. • Clinical Facial Treatments help to exfoliate, clear clogged pores, and remove dead skin cells. Microdermabrasion facials and Chemical Peels will remove dead skin cells, stimulate collagen production for tighter younger-looking skin and improve blood circulation. • Pure Vitamin C Antioxidant Serums penetrate the skin, protects against damage and enhances self-repair to reduce signs of aging and prevent future skin damage.
CORRECT Time, lifestyle, and genetics can all affect the behavior and appearance of your skin. Signs of aging such as fine lines, discoloration, and loss of elasticity become more visible due to collagen breakdown, slower cell turnover, and decreased moisture within skin. Special skin concerns such as acne, rosacea, hyperpigmentation, spider veins and stretch marks can be treated with corrective products and procedures designed to help improve visible skin concerns and restore a healthier, balanced, more youthful complexion. • Minimally invasive treatments such as Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) therapy, Microneedling and Dermaplaning all promote smoother skin and healthy skin tone. • IPL Skin Rejuvenation sends pulses of light to your skin,
14
which stimulates collagen production to keep your skin youthfully firm and elastic. • Microneedling uses a device to make tiny punctures in the top layer of skin. These channels allow your skin to more deeply absorb restorative serums to turbocharge collagen and elastin production. With such noticeable, long-lasting results, no wonder Microneedling has become a favorite of celebrity A-listers! • Dermaplaning is controlled, gentle scraping of the facial skin to carefully remove the outermost layer of dead skin cells and vellus hair, aka peach fuzz. This service is highly effective in minimizing the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles and acne scars, while leaving the skin smooth, supple and vibrant. • A licensed esthetician will help you develop a personalized treatment plan to address your goals and concerns. Clinicalgrade skin care products are available for daily home care and will complement aesthetic procedures.
PROTECT After committing to a consistent skin care routine you will want help preserve the results with moisturizers and sunscreens that are formulated with ingredients designed to optimize the health and appearance of the skin. • Professional grade moisturizers provide nourishment, replenish hydration, and protect the skin’s barrier. • Sunscreens are the first line of defense against damaging UVA/UVB rays and help preserve the results achieved with professional treatments and at-home skin care regimes. Healthy, youthful skin goes far beyond simple soap and water. Although, cleansing and toning are an important start the three principles of prevent, correct and protect are fundamental to an effective, integrated skin care regime. Kristy Robinson is a Licensed Aesthetician with BodyBrite St. Johns. Holiday Fun for Kids with Sensory Issues
by Jennifer Jones, LMHC, BCBA Invo Behavior & therapy Services
Parties and family gatherings, special treats and twinkling lights – what’s not to like about the holidays? Plenty, for kids with autism and other sensory challenges. Many are easily overwhelmed by new sights and sounds. Try these tips to make the holidays more fun for kids with autism and sensory issues.
Get Ready • Get Ready. Talk about the holidays well in advance so they’re more familiar. Spend some time looking at pictures of people you’ll see at events. Extended family and friends aren’t strangers to you, but your son may not remember them from last year.
Detours • Detour Around Food Fights. Special foods are a big part of holidays, but it’s not unusual for children on the spectrum to have specific eating habits or be on a restricted diet. If your daughter is open to trying new foods, make some in advance and see how it goes. If not, bring meals, snacks and treats you know she’ll enjoy.
Quiet Spaces • Find a Quiet Space. The energy of holiday gatherings is exciting, but the noise and activity can be too much for kids with autism.
18
Comfort • Scope out a den or space away from the action where you can take your son if you see signs of distress. Having favorite toys and comfort items on hand can help soothe him.
Plan Ahead • Plan for Presents. Many kids get over-stimulated by lots of presents and waiting to open their gifts. One idea is to give your child an especially desirable present right away so she’s occupied with something fun and doesn’t have to wait.
Sensory Friendly • Make it Sensory-Friendly. Visiting Santa is a special tradition, but waiting in line with lots of noisy kids can be very difficult. Some organizations offer sensory-friendly Santa experiences. For example, Invo’s Lake Gray Therapy Center is hosting a sensory friendly Santa on December 7. See invotherapies.com/holidayfestival for information.

Ireland by
When I was told that our European vacation had to start in Dublin because of a soccer game, I was not a happy camper. I have booked many clients and students to Dublin in the past and no one sounded very excited about it. So when I made our travel plans, I made sure that the Ireland portion of the trip was short. I found very inexpensive round trip consolidator (bulk fare) flights from Orlando to Dublin and booked an AirBnB in the city center. I discovered that Dublin was actually a very nice, beautiful, cosmopolitan city. We stayed for 2 ½ days and visited the main tourist attractions - Trinity college, the Guinness Storehouse, etc. (buy your tickets ahead of time so you don’t have to stand in line). I don’t think you need to stay longer than 2 or 3 days in Dublin – because almost everything can be seen/done within that time frame. Since we wanted to visit other locations outside of Dublin, we decided to rent a car. A
train would have definitely been more relaxing, but we wanted to see Clonmacnoise (a beautiful historic monastery with a wealth of historic interest) on our way to the Cliffs of Moher. Driving in Ireland is not for the faint of heart, especially if you’re not used to driving on the left hand side of the road, which we weren’t. Since I was the passenger, I saw old stone walls flying by within inches of my window because the roads were so narrow. We had to stop a few times because a sheep or a cow decided to cross the road. My advice is to rent a car if you’re planning on stopping on your way to take pictures or going to another point of interest. If you don’t plan on stopping anywhere on the way to the Cliff’s of Moher, by all means – take a train or a bus! You’ll still see the beautiful scenery and you’ll arrive at your destination completely relaxed. I had to have two glasses of wine after I got out of the car. We took a ferry ride to see the Cliffs of Moher and captured some fantastic photographs

but then the clouds started rolling in. If I ever get a chance to go back, I will spend more time there – so I can wait for the clouds to leave and see more of the majestic views. After the Cliffs of Moher, we drove to Galway and stayed in the Abbeyglen Castle hotel for the night. I highly recommend this place. The price was approximately $100.00 per person and it included a fantastic breakfast. The price for the castle was a bit higher than what we usually like to spend - but we’ll definitely remember our stay. We toured Galway during the day and in the evening we returned to the castle, had a fantastic dinner, drank beer and sang Irish songs in the bar with the other guests. In hind-sight, I realize my opinion about Ireland was misguided. We fell in love with the beautiful countryside, the culture and the people with their sense of humor, generosity and kindness. We can’t wait to return. I tell all my clients to visit Ireland – it’s magnificent!

EARTH FARE Our Local Foodie Visits a New Market in Town with Holiday Party Time in Mind. by Lori Allen
I
ts holiday party time and you are working on those ugly sweaters or searching for that sparkly red dress or both! Those last minute invites are rolling in and the panic of getting everything ready for the holiday is setting in. Well I did some fun foodie research and found a quick easy solution, Earthfare! They are known for their artificially free/no gmo foods but what I found was some really scrumptious quick pickups for the holidays. Take the stress out of the holiday preparation and let Earthfare do the work!
Let’s start with the hot platters that are so popular at all the parties. Earthfare offers a ton of options for example you can get bacon wrapped scallops, bacon wrapped shrimp, shrimp stuffed peppers, oysters Rockefeller, coconut curry crab cakes, sweet potatoes tornado shrimp, hatch chili crab cakes all for $1each. In 30minutes you will have a feast to serve to your guests or to put on a nice Christmas platter and off you go. You will be the hit of the party! If you are in a hurry you can grab one of their self-serve trays and create an amazing olive platter. From feta stuffed olives to olives from all around the world these would not be a disappointment on any party table. How about a cheese tray? There are so many varieties of cheese and crackers all in one spot that it would only take a few minutes to create a masterpiece. What I found that was really cool is that they offer some really nice Jams of all different varieties, what a great way to step up that cheese tray a notch! Maria one of their managers told me you can order these cheese platters and others ahead of time but even if you are last minute they can help you quickly create

a beautiful charcuterie board and amaze the host. If you are like me and need a quick girls Nite munchie dish there are some premade antipasto packages that include wonderful things like 4 different kinds of salami (my fav) and even ones that have cheese, meats and olives in them! So easy and convenient. For the sweet tooth in ya, they have macaroons which are beautiful, elegant and taste so good. As wells as a big variety of specialty small bite size cookies by the pound. You could almost pass them off as homemade! (Shhhhhhh) Last but not least but you know me I have to throw this in….they have a very nice wine and beer selection to go with any of your goodies. But best of all they have this really cool machine that is filled with fresh oranges and makes fresh squeezed juice right then and there. It’s cool because of the way it’s designed none of the bitterness from the rinds ever get into the juice…now if that doesn’t say the best Mimosas in town I don’t know what does! Cheers and have a wonderful holiday season!
Happy Holidays!

The Community Nutcracker Giving back to the community through the art of dance By Mikalya Lindenfeld
I
magine: an elegant party, a battle with rats, and a dance of the Sugar Plum Family. Sound familiar? Now, visualize all of that paired with a service-based organization that supports the Jacksonville area. Sounds like a dream come true, right? You’re in luck, because that dream becomes a reality with the annual performance of The Community Nutcracker Jacksonville. This December 13th and 14th, the dancers of the 28th performance of The Community Nutcracker will take the stage during their public performances at The Florida Theatre. Dancers, volunteers, and audience members in all walks of life will be able to enjoy the magic of the Nutcracker season. The Community Nutcracker is unique as it is the only nonprofit performance of the Nutcracker in the Jacksonville and surrounding areas. Its mission is to give back to the community, using the art of dance as a tool to fund donations to many local organizations. Before the public performances, the particular nighttime performance on December 12th is called “Community Service Night”, and all tickets to see the show are donated. These donations go to retirement homes and representatives from the organizations supported by The Community Nutcracker. Morning shows on the 12th and 13th are school shows, where local schools can purchase tickets at reduced prices to educate students on the art of ballet. Dancers, directors, and supporting people that help run the show are all volunteers, but while they give their time and commitment to the organization, they also gain from the experience. I spoke with a few people involved in the production to find out just how it affects them. Morgan Beyer is the lead in this year’s production, dancing the role of Clara. She is 14 years old and remarks on the magic of performing. She said, “While I’m on stage performing in the Nutcracker, I feel so happy. We work months and months before the show, and you feel like you finally get to bring joy to others. You feel like you’re really giving back to the community.”
28
Morgan Beyer is the lead in this year’s production, dancing the role of Clara
Morgan is also thrilled that, as Clara, she is beginning to become more involved in the service side of the organization. Kit Rossi is a volunteer who has recently become more involved. When explaining to me why she has chosen to dedicate so much of her time to the organization, she said, “It’s why I like The Community Nutcracker the best. It gives back to the community, so I feel like I am part of something bigger than myself, part of something bigger than my own studio, and I want my daughters to be involved in something like that.” Debbie Rankin is one of the founding artistic directors and choreographers of the production. She has dedicated almost thirty years of her life to the service and art that The Community Nutcracker brings to the Jacksonville community. Since 2005, the Community Nutcracker has sponsored 67 “dreams” of children suffering from life-threatening illnesses through donations to the local nonprofit Dreams Come True of Jacksonville. This could be a trip, new technology, or even a service project that a child has their heart set on. One Dreamer was a young girl named Savannah Goodman. I asked Mrs. Rankin to describe an impactful memory she has experienced with the production, and her response brought us both to the verge of tears. “I think because we are community-based, and we are a nonprofit, one of my most outstanding memories is having Savannah Goodman as Clara. She was a Dream Child, and what we do benefited her. That’s something I’ll never forget.” The Community Nutcracker has touched the hearts of many Jacksonville residents for almost thirty years. The beauty of the dancing, the magic of performing, and the giving nature of this particular production is one that makes the Nutcracker season the most wonderful time of the year.

Decorating For The Holidays by Kelly Wissinger
This time of year is either coming quicker, or I’m less prepared each year! Whatever the case, I do love to decorate for the Holidays. How do you decorate for the Holidays? Do you go all out with glitz and glam, or do you prefer to keep it simple? Here’s a few ideas to maybe try something new this year: ♥♥ Play with color - you don’t have to stick to the traditional red & green. If you’re usually afraid of color, go bold, and add sparkle - it’s only temporary right? If your style is eclectic, make a statement by keeping to neutrals. ♥♥ Make some home-made decorations with wood slats & cheerful signage filling that empty wall space; place little ferns, dried berries etc inside clear baubles; use presents as decoration or use empty boxes and match the wrapping paper to your decor. ♥♥ Try a new decoration at the bottom of your tree; maybe wrap a big burlap sack around the base or put it in an oversized bucket, planter or crate. ♥♥ Match your decorations to your design style. If you have a coastal theme, put starfish and sand-dollars on the tree; maybe stick to sea glass ornaments; keep your table/mantel decorations in hues of blues. For a modern theme, stick to two colors; maybe black & white or metallics, and use ornaments with clean lines & geometric shapes; keep table decorations to a minimum. If your style is farmhouse, keep it simple on the tree with one color but add some burlap, or go all out with plaid; maybe add some lanterns throughout the house and up the stairs; and of course some undressed garland on the table and around the chandelier. Whatever style or design you choose, have fun with it! Mix up store bought decorations with home-made organic ones making it unique and personal to you, plus you don’t want to look like you just went on a shopping spree in Target or Pottery Barn! And if you don’t celebrate the Holidays, have fun decorating for the season by adding texture and layers with blankets and pillows in winter colors, pinecones in baskets, and lots of candles and fairy lights to welcome the shorter days.

Local St. Johns Mom Starts Online Clothing shop
Happy Bug Boutique!
Local Mom Rachel Ford recently decided to open an online clothing shop, Happy Bug Boutique, to share her love of unique children's fashions. Rachel is the Mom of 3, two teenagers and a 4 year old.
How did you come up with the idea for Happy Bug? My youngest daughter was my inspiration for this whole thing. I have always liked buying her clothes online because you can find such cute things that are different from what you get in stores.
Kamryn & Rachel Kamryn & Rachel
Earlier this year I just got the idea one day to start my own online boutique. My husband was on board and fully supported this idea so I started doing a LOT of research and we decided to make it happen.
What makes Happy Bug unique? I have styles of clothing that you can't find in most stores. I'm able to work with my suppliers and customize outfits, patterns and mix different materials to come up with different unique designs.
What do you enjoy most about owning your own business? Being able to work on my own schedule is definitely a perk of owning a business out of my home. I always like to get creative with everything that I do so just being able to be creative and make it my own is fun.
What is your background? I am a Florida native, born in Jacksonville and moved to St. Johns county when I was 3 years old. I worked for a local builder in the interior design department until I had my first child. I stayed home with my first two until they were both in school and then decided to go back to work.
Do you have another job? Doe it help you when creating new ideas for Happy Bug? I am in my 9th year as a teacher at a preschool here in St. Johns county. I do think that being around young kids every day and seeing the style of clothes that they are wearing definitely helps me with ideas.
What do you love about St. Johns? I love that I get to raise my kids in the same area that I grew up in, although it has grown so much since then. We love being close to so many nice beaches. The schools here are great and we have the best neighbors.

A Message From The Vet by Dr. Deckard, DVM Pets R Family Pet's R Family
Back Pain & Intervertebral Disc Disease Intervertebral Disc Disease (IVDD) is a fairly common spinal problem for dogs, but many pet parents may not be aware of the disease or the symptoms. While many dogs will experience back or neck pain at some time during their lives, some cases are more serious than others. Intervertebral discs are located between the vertebrae along the entire spine, and they act as shock absorbers. If the discs are injured – whether from arthritis, wear and tear, trauma, or breed predisposition- there can be symptoms ranging from mild to severe pain, neurologic deficits, and in some cases, paralysis can occur. Often the first sign of back or neck pain in a dog is that they don’t want to eat (neck bending or chewing can hurt); they may not want to go for a walk, or may have trouble or hesitation getting up and down stairs or on furniture. Sometimes their abdomen is tense, and they cry out when touched or picked up, or they tremble for what seems like no reason. More extreme cases owners may notice their paws may drag slightly when walking, they have a wobbly gait, or they drag their hind limbs and cannot stand up. The latter symptoms are always an emergency, and pets should be taken to an emergency veterinarian if your regular veterinarian is not available. Diagnosing the problem is often based first on physical and neurological exam; x-rays can help show some spinal abnormalities such as fractures, dislocations, and calcifications, but most of the time for a definitive diagnosis an MRI or CT scan must be performed. If a dog can walk, non-surgical treatment is a reasonable choice. Often strict rest, confinement, pain medication, and steroids OR non-steroidal anti-inflammatories are given to help ease symptoms. It’s extremely important to remember that as the medications work, the pet may feel better and want to
38
do things like walk, run, and play. Please follow your vet’s recommendation for how long to rest and what it entails; it can cause a significant setback if proper rest or confinement is cut short and the pet is allowed to do too much too soon. In cases where there are neurologic deficits or loss of function, immediate surgery must be considered for the pet to have the best chance at regaining function again. Spinal surgery is very specialized and should be done by a boardcertified neurologist. There are multiple procedures that can be performed based on the dog’s exact problem, but in almost all surgical cases recovery is a long road, often requiring physical therapy, and taking 4 weeks or better before they walking, urinating, and defecating on their own once again. There are some pets who do not regain function after surgery; there are a number of resources and products available to assist in caring for an immobile pet. It’s not something everyone is able to take on, but with the right pet and the right owner, caring for an immobile pet can be a rewarding experience and still can provide good quality of life for the pet. Although disc disease can affect a dog of any breed, sex, or age, there are some breeds that are prone to disc problems and may have recurrences throughout their lives. Breeds such as dachshunds, shih-tzus, French bulldogs, basset hounds, beagles, cocker spaniels, and German shepherds seem to be pre-disposed to hereditary and disc problems. It is rare in cats. If you think your pet is having back pain, or having any kind of neurologic problem, please see your veterinarian right away. Earlier treatments generally result in better outcomes!
