Bernard Diggs New Year New Diggs New Dreams

Photos by Mindy Kerr Nature’s Child Photography

Learn how Bernard’s new endeavors changed his life and helped him create The R.A.W EDGE EVENT

T

he original term “New Digs” came from the old English jargon which means, a new place or new house to stay and reside in. With a name like Diggs, it seems Bernard Diggs,

founder and CEO of The New Diggs Team and New Diggs Coaching, was destined to help people in real estate and in life. “I feel like I truly was born and called to motivate and inspire individuals to be the best versions of themselves.” Bernard started New Diggs Coaching International with the idea of helping others at its core. In February 2020, New Diggs Coaching will host the R.A.W. Edge event in Jacksonville for real estate and business professionals seeking to discover their best selves and transform their lives. The coaching company was inspired by the Bernard Diggs real estate team (New Diggs Team) which helped hundreds of families buy and sell homes throughout the local area under Florida Homes Realty & Mortgage in Jacksonville, FL. In 2017 Bernard was voted the number one real estate agent to work with military and veterans on the Naval Air Station - Jacksonville. Bernard later decided to move to California to continue to reach his full potential and move into an expansion that would later catapult his career and knowledge in business, sales, relationships and real estate. He became one of the TOP Real Estate Agents with 2 expansion teams selling over $67.8 million in sales volume in the year 2018. St. Johns Magazine originally met Bernard Diggs a few years ago but so much has changed as his business grew and he reached a new level of excellence. Today Bernard is not only a real estate agent but is also helping others grow their businesses with the valuable life lessons and philosophies he has learned along the way.

an option. We then teach them how to break through barriers and utilize all the resources in their journey to becoming successful.

For more information about New Diggs Coaching and the R.A.W Edge Event, visit www.newdiggscoaching.com

I love to watch someone come into the program, start to get motivated, implement their belief, use the coaching tools and then see the results they never thought they would be able to reach. It never gets old to see the excitement that someone experiences when they finally let go of their barriers and truly reach their full potential in being the BEST version of themselves. What have you learned from the challenges and changes in your life? I have learned that the twin brother of fear of failure is the fear of success. I have come across obstacles many times in my life, business and relationships. However, the fear that I allowed to hold me back was not the fear of failing, but rather the fear of success. The program was created over 3 years ago, but I was afraid that everything we put into this program would actually become a success and work to be greater than I thought it ever could be. I learned to let go of my fears and allowed myself to

embrace the best version of myself, which in turn, allowed for breaking down my own barriers and reaching my full potential. www.stjohnsmag.com

Med Spa vs. Day Spa

M

edical spas, also known as med-spas have become more popular in recent years for not only women, but for men as well. Med spas are a fusion between a day spa and a medical clinic.

Med-spas such as BodyBrite St. Johns strive to provide the best of both worlds - a relaxing atmosphere with the skincare expertise from an aesthetician or nurse practitioner, which you would typically find at a dermatologist’s office. Med-spas work similarly to a gym membership, but instead it is for skincare maintenance. High-end procedures are offered at an affordable price and the entire experience from beginning to end tends to be a very welcoming and personable one. Wondering if a medical spa is the right place for you to get your treatments done? Here are answers to some common questions about medical spas.

The Difference Between Med Spa and Day Spa The biggest differences between a day spa and a med-spa are the type of services offered. While day spas provide luxury yet superficial services, med-spas offer this and additionally more result driven treatments that may require on-going sessions. Treatments such as corrective skincare procedures or permanent laser hair removal are what you will encounter at a medical spa.

While the menu will vary depending on which medical spa you visit, in general, you can expect to find treatments for acne, aging skin, hair removal, and more. Like at a traditional day spa, med-spas also have the option of luxurious treatments such as massage, body treatments, and facials. Medical spas also offer more specialized treatments that are typically only found at a dermatology or plastic surgery clinic. Some of the more common services include light and laser treatments, injectables like Juvederm, Restalyne, and Botox, as well as chemical peels and microneedling. These services are great as a maintenance to skincare in correcting, preventing, protecting, and perfecting the skin. As for acne treatment, you can find these at the medical spa too. Medical spas offer procedures to treat breakouts, lighten post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, reduce scarring, and improve the overall appearance of the skin. In addition, high-end medical grade products such as retinols and corrective serums can be purchased through medical spas.

Who Performs the Treatments The person who actually does your treatment depends on the treatment itself. The physician that oversees the medical spa is in charge of all procedures that fall under the medical realm. Estheticians handle the more routine day spa therapies.

Unlike day spas, medical spas are typically affiliated with, overseen, or run by a medical doctor. While not every procedure is done by a doctor, they are performed under the supervision of the doctor, most often a dermatologist, plastic surgeon, or aprn/nurse practitioner.

Expect that an esthetician, also known as a skin care therapist, will do all non-medical procedures. An esthetician will do all cosmetic procedures, like massage, body scrubs, wraps, and the like. Estheticians can also do certain non-invasive treatments like acne treatment facials, microdermabrasion, and superficial chemical peels.

Although medical spas are clinical and result driven, they may provide a relaxing environment you would seek at a traditional day spa, therefore, enhancing the pampering experience of self-care. Type of Services Offered

Although each state has its own regulations concerning medical spas, in general, all medical procedures must be performed by a physician. This means all injectables, chemical peels that target deeper layers of the skin, and light and laser treatments will be done by the physician.

Make 2020 your best year yet by Diana Brummer MSW, LCSW Owner, Good Mental Health LLC

N

ot only are we on the cusp of a new year, we are also on the cusp of a new decade. This season is always an opportunity to re-evaluate our priorities, focus on our goals, and assert better boundaries. But this year it is also an opportunity to create a more intentional future. Using that nice round number-2020-we can ask: Where do I want to be in 2025? What are my five-year goals? Or, 2030? What are my ten-year goals? Or, (gulp) 2040? What are my twenty-year goals? And then we can ask the even bigger question: how will we accomplish our goals? What will we do differently in the future to achieve better results than we have in the past? Accomplishing the things that are most important to us often is not a matter of working harder or even working smarter. Instead, it depends on our ability to prioritize what really matters to us, focus our energy on only those things, and release feelings of guilt for not being able to do it all.

1 2

Determining our priorities: because the first step in getting what you want out of life is knowing what you want! Saying no first: don't immediately commit to every request. Instead, give yourself time to assess whether it aligns with your personal priorities. If not, stick with your "no" so that you may focus your energy on the things and people that matter most to you.

3

Living in alignment with our deeper why: when we are clear about what motivates us, we can consciously and intentionally focus our energy on living our deeper purpose. This is where the confidence to defend our personal boundaries resides! In the spirit of celebrating, supporting, and manifesting an intentional new year (and new decade!), Good Mental Health will be hosting the Better Boundaries in 6 Weeks workshop beginning in early 2020. Visit GoodMentalHealthLLC.com for more information. Wishing all our friends and neighbors a wonderful New Year!

If we say "no" more often to the non-essentials, we have the energy to say "yes" to what is essential. In short, accomplishing our goals is largely determined by our ability to say No. Because, if we say no more often to what doesn't matter, then we will say yes more often to what matters most. Saying no doesn't have to be unkind, uncaring, or selfish. It is simply a means of defending our personal boundaries so that we can focus our time and energy on the things that really matter to us. With practice, those kind but direct "No's" become easier, less awkward, less apologetic, more confident. Now with a second location on CR 210: As we become better acquainted with our deeper why- why did I choose those priorities? Why those particular goals?- it becomes easier to defend the time and energy required to achieve them. This new year, this new decade, let's become more intentional by:

ummer Beaches is an actively engaged affinity group of the Cummer Museum of Arts and Gardens. Each year Cummer Beaches supports and funds museum school tours for Beaches area students and teachers that include gallery and garden tours, studio time, art supplies and transportation. These experiences plant seeds for lifelong appreciation of the arts and gardens and their relationship with history, literature, science and everyday life. The Cummer Museum’s Director and CEO, Adam Levine, Ph.D., believes, “the information we take in from the world is through our senses. What makes us human is our ability to use those senses to understand our world and communicate to others. The arts teach us to harness our senses, and when we do that effectively, we perceive the world more richly and our lives are happier.” Cummer Beaches also promotes Museum accessibility and activity with events and programs throughout the year. Our Kick-Off event in October is always a fun gathering that unveils the Cummer’s new exhibition schedule. Each January, our annual Gala offers exciting entertainment with elegant dining, dancing and music provided by the Jacksonville University Jazz orchestra. This year’s theme is the “Roaring Twenties”and occurs on January 26th at the TPC Sawgrass. In addition, Cummer Beaches presents a Fall lecture series in collaboration with the Beaches Museum in Jacksonville Beach, covering relevant topics in the arts with ties to the Cummer Museum’s exhibits. These lectures are well-attended and free to the public. In-depth explorations of current exhibition themes are offered by the Cummer Beaches Book Club. This group meets quarterly and is free of charge to Cummer Beaches members. The next reading and discussion will focus on the Louis Comfort Tiffany: Treasures from the Driehaus Collection exhibition in order to familiarize members with the beauty of nature as perceived

and replicated by Louis Comfort Tiffany. Future exciting topics will cover the upcoming 2020 exhibitions Striking Power: Iconoclasm in Ancient Egypt and Buddha and Shiva, Lotus and Dragon: Masterworks from the Mr. and Mrs. John D. Rockefeller 3rd Collection at Asia Society. For more information about our scheduled activities, reservations for our Gala on January 26th, and for membership, please contact the Cummer Museum at 904.356.6857. To register for events and programs online, go to CUMMERMUSEUM.ORG/EVENT/BEACHESGALA. We welcome your support so that we may continue to provide educational opportunities and bring awareness of the Cummer Museum to the Beaches Communities.

A Message From The Vet by Dr. Deckard, DVM Pets R Family

New Year’s Resolutions:

Tackling Pet Obesity It’s no secret that obesity is an epidemic for people in the US, but did you know that our pets can also suffer from obesity? It’s approximated that over 50% of our pet cats and dogs are overweight or obese, and most owners are not even aware of it. Obesity can lead to several conditions that can result in poor quality of life, or even shorten your pet’s life span. It is important to recognize when your pet is overweight and take measures to work toward an ideal body weight. With everyone making New Year’s Resolutions right now, January is a great time to make a commitment to a healthy lifestyle for your pet! Like us, obesity in pets can cause or exacerbate arthritis, respiratory issues, overheating, and even cause diabetes (usually in cats). To determine if you pet is of ideal weight, you should be able to feel your pet’s ribs without pressing and see a noticeable waist when viewing your pet from above. From the side view, your pet’s belly should be tucked, and not sagging. If they have extra padding and a saggy belly, likely they are overweight. Your veterinarian can help determine if your pet is overweight and teach you how to recognize the visual signs of obesity. Battling obesity in our pets can be achieved in several ways. First, check

the portion of their food and calculate the calories. Guidelines on the bag of food are just a reference; every pet’s calorie requirements are different based on their activity level, and can even be affected by the breed of the pet, as there are some breeds that are genetically predisposed to obesity, such as Golden retrievers, cocker spaniels, Dachshunds, Beagles, and Labrador retrievers. Most foods list how many calories are in one cup; keep in mind this is a measured cup! Using any other kind of cup may surprisingly yield much more food than you would expect! Your veterinarian can help calculate your pet’s calorie requirements for weight loss vs. maintenance and help determine if the food you are feeding is appropriate. Typical healthy weight loss is 1-2% of body weight per week. There are some commercial diets that are calorie restricted that may be necessary to achieve weight loss. Don’t forget to consider the type and amount of treats you are giving too, as those calories can add up quickly! Second, increasing exercise for your pet is also very beneficial. Something as simple as a walk around the block is a great start for a sedentary pet; you can gradually increase the duration or distance if your pet is up for it. Exercising cats can be a little bit of a challenge but getting some new toys, tunnels, and cat trees can certainly increase their activity level. Be patient; weight loss is not usually quickly achieved. Frequent checkins with your vet, weight checks, and food adjustments may be needed along the way. Don’t give up! Celebrate the small victories and stick with the program. Your pet will thank you for helping him live a longer and happier life!
