Leagues of Their Own

First Coast YMCA Youth Sports Give Children a Chance to Create Memories

T

here’s something special about joining a team for the first time when you’re a kid. Getting a jersey, putting on the gear, and hanging out with your friends to enjoy a little friendly competition are all memories that you hold onto for the rest of your life. Youth Sports at the Y can help create those long-lasting moments in a supportive and welcoming environment. Our wide range of activities helps kids develop important life skills such as discipline, teamwork, sportsmanship, and gaining confidence in addition to promoting healthy living through exercise. As the school year begins, now is an ideal time to get your child back into a routine with fall registration open, giving children the chance to have fun and make connections outside of the classroom! Part of what sets the Y apart from other youth sports programs is that our leagues are open to children of any skill level and background. We offer financial assistance to families to make sure every child has an opportunity to enjoy in-person, peer-topeer interaction. Plus, we’re a faith-based, non-profit organization that prides itself on serving the community. Youth Sports across First Coast YMCA branches are now available for kids ages 2-17. Below is a list of fall and winter sports registrations you can sign your child up for today:

Fall Soccer

• Registration Deadline: July 9 • Season: August 12 – October 1

Fall Volleyball

• Registration Deadline: September 3 • Season: October 7 – December 3 • Interested in competitive volleyball? Club Volleyball tryouts for the U12, U14, and U17 teams will be on August 8 at the Williams YMCA

Winter Basketball

• Registration Deadline: November 19 • Season: January 6 – February 5, 2023

The Y also offers competitive volleyball and basketball leagues. Last year, the U14 First Coast Elite Volleyball team took first place in their division during a tournament in Savannah! Registration for that team and the U17 First Coast Elite team is now open at the Williams YMCA on San Jose Boulevard. Our third grade Junior Pro boys’ basketball team took home the state championship last year and is once again ranked #1 in the state. We offer Junior Pro leagues for boys in grades 3-10 and will hold tryouts for those teams in mid-November. Please contact the Ponte Vedra YMCA at

904.543.9622 for more information. Youth Sports programs at the Y wouldn’t be possible without our volunteer coaches, who give their time generously to instill valuable lessons into children and make a difference in their experiences. Alex Minardi has been coaching youth soccer since he was 15 years old, including the last three years with the Y here on the First Coast. “The more volunteers come, the more teams we get to have and the more our programs get to grow. That’s something I’ve always wanted to see since I’ve been here,” said Alex. “When you put it into perspective, it's really only a couple hours of your week that you can put in towards kids to make a lasting impact on their lives. It’s always such a rewarding experience getting to see them thrive and gain self-confidence.” Looking for ways to strengthen your community? Sign-up as a volunteer coach for your local YMCA Youth Sports programs by visiting https://fcymca.org/give/ volunteer. Dental Health BARTRAM DENTAL CENTER (BARTRAMDENTAL.COM)

What’s Next? By Jason Lewis, DDS, FAGD

T

his is the time of year that we get to experience ourselves, or that we love, moving on to next steps in life. Summer is full of weddings, graduations, and children leaving the nest to go off to college. And while I choose the path of college, that isn’t always the best option for the students of today. Often graduates are left with uncertainty after high school. More and more, recent graduates are electing to attend trade schools and begin their careers right away. I realize I may be just a bit partial… but, if you or someone you know has considered a career in dentistry, there has never been a better time to enter the field. Here are 5 reasons why becoming a dental assistant might be the answer to…. What’s next?

1. Fast, Low Risk Training

Today’s dental assisting programs can range anywhere from 10 weeks to over a year and are quite reasonably priced. If you are working during the week, the 10-week programs are typically offered on Saturdays and move at an accelerated pace to jump start your new career. Others prefer a slower, more traditional pace, and prefer to be in a classroom during the week. There isn’t a wrong choice, it just depends on what’s right for you and your current phase of life.

2. Job Outlook

The US Bureau of Labor Statistics reports an expected growth of 20% through 2026 for dental assistants. That’s nationally. We live in one of the fastest growing areas of the country, so you can only imagine what that means for our area. With such a high

20

demand and need for dental assistants, newly trained assistants are getting better pay, more benefits, and more respect on the job.

3. Work Environment

With an Expanded Functions Dental Assisting Certification, you can work in any type of dental office (Ex: general dentistry, pediatrics, oral surgery, endodontics, etc.). I have found that so much of my daily happiness comes from the people I work with. I truly love my team. So, whether it’s team, or the clinical aspect that gets you excited about going to work each day - finding a dental home for a great career is just around the corner. A lot of offices have varying hours too. So, depending on how much or how little you want to work each week, there is an office for you.

4. Connecting with Patients

Almost everyone that goes into any form of healthcare does so because they genuinely want to help people. We are so fortunate in dentistry. We get to see our patients more frequently than other medical fields, and we really get to know them. I have watched kids grow up and start their own families. It is very special.

5. Additional Career Opportunities

Some dental assistants love sitting chairside with patients their whole career. However, once someone has experience in assisting, they now hold the knowledge to explore

additional opportunities. Some assistants go on to further their education and become hygienists. Others move to the front office and transition to treatment coordinators or office managers. Others partner with dental supply companies and become sales representatives, while still others master a piece of technology and get hired by that company to travel the country and train dentists how to use it. The list goes on and on. The time is now to enter the dental field, and I have been so fortunate to be able to have a dental assisting school right in our office. If you would like a tour, or more information about the dentistry, give us a call or schedule a meeting and we would be happy to answer all your questions. It’s time to find out ‘What’s next!’

A Message From The Vet

IBD & Tucker Y

ou know how you meet those really fun dogs, who just seem to get along with everyone, and make the day a happier place? Well that is our buddy Tucker, a patient here at Pets R Family. Tucker is a 3 year old Goldendoodle, who like many other young dogs, has had a history of a sensitive stomach for most of his life. Many times his vomiting was associated with having an empty stomach, since he didn’t always eat so great, or it was directly associated with eating something that he wasn’t supposed to eat. His diet was changed several times with variable success and he was put on an acid blocker off and on which seemed to mostly work for him. At times his vomit had some blood in it and other times, it was associated with some diarrhea as well. Mom and Dad weren’t too worried early on since it seemed to be something that always resolved and it never became worse….at least not for his first 3 years of life.

bloodwork and also completed a barium study which ruled out a motility disorder or foreign body. We also performed fecal tests to rule out parasites. Tucker’s parents have always been very involved owners and were very understanding of how most complicated problems like this require multiple tests to get to a resolution with or without a definitive diagnosis. They had also done a very good job in monitoring Tucker and kept a journal to help us best make next recommendations. After the most recent tests, we decided that inflammatory bowel disease was the

Mom made an appointment for Tucker when she noticed that his vomiting had become more frequent and he was no longer responding to the acid blocker. We had even changed his diet to a prescription gastrointestinal diet, but his appetite was decreasing as well. Due to the unknown cause for Tucker’s problem, I discussed with his parents that we needed to run some tests. We started with some x-rays of his abdomen, which were unremarkable. We also ruled out pancreatitis and Addison’s disease with

Tucker & his parents most likely diagnosis. He was treated with a steroid, an antibiotic and started a hypoallergenic diet. It’s still early in the

treatment, but Tucker is eating better than he has ever eaten and he has not vomited at all since starting this treatment! Great results! Inflammatory bowel disease is a disease of the stomach and/or intestines that is caused by inflammation and can be influenced by many factors. Dogs and cats affected by IBD show signs such as vomiting, diarrhea, blood in stool or vomit, weight loss and anorexia. A definitive diagnosis of IBD is only made by doing biopsies of the affected intestines/stomach, although other tests such as ultrasound can also show some abnormalities. This disease is treated by a hypoallergenic diet, antibiotics, steroids or other immunosuppressants +/- probiotics. Once patients have been controlled with their clinical signs, they generally have a favorable long-term prognosis. Tucker is doing well with the current treatment. We also identified stress as playing a role in his flare-ups so we’ve been addressing that as well. Mom and Dad are very pleased with his progress and Tucker is happy to be enjoying his food and wonderful play time again.
