Shearwater offers Tips to Take Your Workout

OUTDOORS by Gabriella Doyle, Personal Trainer

Shearwater was expertly designed to provide residents a unique lifestyle experience with world-class amenities, connection to neighbors and close proximity to the outdoors.

Meet Gabriella Doyle, Shearwater’s new on-site personal trainer

W

ith the holidays in the rearview mirror and temperatures slowly climbing, it’s time to take advantage of Florida’s “winter” and opt outside. At Shearwater, one of the fast-growing master-planned communities in St. Johns County, residents choose from a variety of amenities and activities centered around healthy living and outdoor opportunities. From its more than 15 miles of nature trails to the resort-style pool, lap pool and lazy river to playgrounds, illuminated Har-Tru tennis courts and a yoga lawn, Shearwater has an outdoor activity to suit everyone’s needs. To further provide the best in active lifestyle programming, Shearwater recently welcomed Gabriella Doyle as a fitness manager and head personal trainer to the community. Gabriella brings a wealth of knowledge and experience in the health and wellness industry to this new position and is excited to guide residents in their own wellness journeys. As a certified personal trainer, Gabriella recommends the following tips and tricks to take your workout outdoors:

6

Blaze the trails

Instead of grinding out a run on the treadmill, mix it up by taking your run outdoors. Shearwater residents have access to over 15 miles of trails along more than 600 acres of natural, preserved habitat with various routes to choose from. A map of the trails can be found on shearwaterliving.com, along with key picnic areas that double as great rest stops. Furthermore, the entire St. Johns County community is invited to try Shearwater’s trail system at its annual 5K on the Trails and Fun Run every April. This annual event is a great way to experience Shearwater, while raising money for local charities.

Back to Basics

When you can’t make the gym or a workout class, create an easy 30-minute exercise regimen to complete outdoors. At Shearwater, Gabriella helps residents put together simple yet effective exercise plans using their own body weight. Think squats, push-ups, sit-ups and mountain climbers. Residents can easily complete this routine on the yoga lawn or while their child plays on the playground. Another pro tip is to invest in resistance bands. These bands are a great alternative to weights, and they quickly mobilize arm workouts with enhanced bicep curls, shoulder presses and more.

Beyond the Gym

Working out doesn’t have to be another trip to the gym. Take advantage of the mild temperatures by trying an outdoor sport such as tennis or swimming. The Kayak Club features four Har-Tru clay tennis courts, sports fields and a multi-lane lap pool for family-friendly activities that also count as cardio.

An extensive 15-mile trail system weaves throughout the neighborhoods and over 600 acres of nature preserve.

Shearwater’s free-range Kompan playgrounds fuse early childhood development psychology into the design and function of the equipment.

Instead of hitting the gym, try playing doubles with your friends and family on one of Shearwater’s four Har-Tru clay tennis courts

In a community so focused on active living, proximity to nature and a connection to neighbors, taking your fitness routine outdoors this year has never been easier. With resort-style amenities, a fulltime personal trainer and an on-site lifestyle director, Shearwater offers activities and programing to fit every lifestyle. To learn more about Shearwater, visit the Kayak Club, located at 100 Kayak Way, St. Augustine, FL 32092 or visit www.shearwaterliving.com. Shearwater offers home designs from Toll Brothers, David Weekley Homes, Lennar, Drees Homes, MasterCraft Builder Group and Dream Finders Homes.

Staying Mentally Healthy When we think about staying healthy, certain things appear on our short list of must-do’s: healthy diet, regular exercise, adequate sleep, medical check ups, dental cleanings. What often doesn’t register as an integral piece of our well-being, requiring regular maintenance and care, is our mental and emotional health. Often, it isn’t until we reach our breaking point that we begin to understand how vitally important our mental health is to our overall well being. Our thoughts govern our feelings, and our feelings govern our behavior. When our feelings are not being cared for, our behavior shows it and our overall performance suffers. In addition to our physical health, it is our duty to also take good care of ourselves mentally and emotionally so that we can be the best versions of ourselves we are capable of being. I often describe my practice as serving two ends of the spectrum. As a counselor, I serve clients who are struggling with issues that can make it difficult some days to engage with life. On the other end of the spectrum, as a coach, I work with clients who are already successful and high functioning, but willing to learn new skills, adopt new mindsets, and integrate new tools that can help them become even more of what they desire to be. At both ends of this spectrum, we are human beings who require nurture, compassion, and care in order to thrive. The only difference is the point at which our journey begins. By giving ourselves the space and permission to take care of all facets of us- mentally, physically, and spiritually- we set the stage to perform at our highest levels, to serve others with our greatest ability, and to love those we care about with the maximum capacity of our hearts. Our power and effectiveness is a direct result of our own self care.

The following are a few ways to maintain Good Mental Health: • Follow therapists online for daily ideas, affirmations, and encouragement (you can find us on instagram @goodmental_health) • Read self help books • Journal or engage in some time of self reflection or self study • Practice mindfulness in some capacity (meditation, yoga, prayer) • Take care of your physical body (movement, sleep, sunlight, rest, nutrition) • Create a support network • Learn to set and maintain boundaries • Build trust with yourself by keeping your word to yourself • Practice self compassion when you slip and mess up on this journey

Nocatee… Promises Made… Promises Kept!

hen my Jamie and I moved to Nocatee over 10+ years ago we moved into the 55+ age restricted Del Webb Ponte Vedra community. The move to Nocatee seemed like a leap of faith in many ways. As midwest transplants, Florida always conjured up images of broken promises made by builders and developers.

Discovery Center which was also the sales office.

For those of you unfamiliar with Nocatee let me give you the big picture; over 13,000 acres less than 10+ minutes to the ocean and PVBeach shopping and clubs with 65% of the total land mass dedicated to preserve and protected areas! We are between I-95 and A1A and are serviced by the Nocatee Parkway which is also a primary evacuation route during severe storms…we are not in the hurricane zone!

There are now 44 different “neighborhoods” in Nocatee of which 18 are already totally built out…only resales in those areas. Total occupied homes now approaches 8,500 with a population estimated to be over 25,000. We now have one of the largest Publix in NE Florida which is currently opening their 25,000 sft Greenwise store just across the road. Ben & Jerry’s is opening this summer, Panera Bread just opened, we have banks, gas stations, numerous restaurants like Dick’s Wings, South Kitchen, MShack, the Loop, Coastal Wine, Starbucks, Dunkin Donuts, Wendy’s and many more coming.

Going back to our arrival in 2009, Nocatee as well as the rest of the country was in the beginning stages of the recession. There were no grocery stores, banks or gas stations and the iconic Splash Water Park was barely off the drawing board. I believe there were only about 500 homes in Nocatee at that time spread out between 5 different develo ments. Del Webb which was slated to have 1900+ homes when finished only had 117 homes at that point with no owner’s club…we all just hung out in the

26

Today we look back at what has happened since those days and it is shockingly impressive! Promises made turned out to be promises kept! The Parc Group who are the master developers of Nocatee have made sure that our community is constantly evolving.

Other enhancements to the Nocatee LifeStyle are two gorgeous K-8 schools as well as pre-school facilities like Primrose, the Starling Assisted Living and Independent Living facilities, apartments like the Reserve, new and fun amenities called the Spray Park, our own Amphitheatre, athletic facilities for soccer, tennis and

pickleball, fenced dog park with their own pond, a swim club, storage facilities, a county kayak launch into the intracoastal waterway and bike and golf cart trails throughout Nocatee! We have fitness centers and major commitments to Nocatee’s medical services by Baptist and Flagler Medical Centers including a YMCA, as well as urgent care and emergency response facilities keeping us healthy, active and happy! If Nocatee sounds exciting, come take a look! Stop by the Nocatee Welcome Center located at the Splash Water Park and Town Center Offices…tell them George sent you! If you have any questions or you need a Realtor who knows Nocatee new construction, resales or rentals please feel free to give me a call.

YMCA at Flagler Health+ Jackie Carrino

Jackie Carrino has been part of the First Coast YMCA Youth Development team for more than 4 years. As Program Coordinator in St Johns County, her focus is on nurturing the potential of all kids in YMCA Summer Camp and Teen programs. Jackie’s favorite activities at Summer Camp are Assembly and Arts & Crafts. Assembly is a gathering of all the campers in the morning and Jackie loves it because she says it’s a great way to challenge campers to be their best all day long. Jackie also enjoys STEM (Science, Technology, Engineer and Math) activities at camp because it is fun to watch the campers use their imaginations to figure out how to solve problems together. When Jackie is not at the Y, she volunteers with Girl Scouts. She’s been a Troop Leader for her daughters, 10-year-old Allison and 7-year old Kaitlyn. Jackie also works with Vision is Priceless, a nonprofit that helps improve the visual health of children in Northeast Florida through education, vision screenings, treatment and referrals. Working at the Y gives Jackie the satisfaction of knowing her contributions are helping to strengthen the First Coast community by having a positive impact on young lives. She’s looking forward to camp this summer at multiple locations in St. Johns County: Galimore Center, Heritage Landing, Ponte Vedra YMCA, River of Life United Methodist and Swiss Cove Christian Church. Want to join Jackie and the Y summer staff team? The Y is looking for caring, fun-loving and enthusiastic site directors, camp counselors and more! You can also join the Y’s new Future Leaders Summer Training Program for ages 13-15. Participants will receive leadership skill development, mentoring, project management training and more! No-CDD Communities in St. Johns County

Matt Redmer, Broker/Owner We Give Realty

A

re you looking for a new home in St. Johns county in a community with No CDDs? CDD fees typically can be over a couple hundred a month (over $2,000 per year), so many people that need to keep their monthly mortgage payment lower opt for No-CDD communities. Usually, communities with CDDs have lots of amenities – resort-style pools, fitness centers, tennis courts, and some even have water park-like amenities – waterslides, lazy rivers (Nocatee and Shearwater), and a 14-acre Crystal Lagoon (Beachwalk). But there are some No CDD communities that still have great amenities. Did you know that SilverLeaf – the new master-planned community that will be one of the largest developments in Northeast Florida, close in size to Nocatee, has no CDD fees? But even though it has no CDDs, it still will have lots of amenities – resort-style pools, spray park water park, tennis and pickleball courts, clubhouse, dog park, and more. There also are No-CDD communities with not many or no amenities, and lower HOA fees. Some homebuyers may not be interested in amenities – maybe they don’t have time to use them, or don’t need a community pool because they are getting their own pool. So the No CDD communities can be a great option for them and can save them some money.

Our real estate company just finished setting up a new website – NoCDDs.com that features all 28 new home communities in St. Johns county with No CDDs. We have all the communities pinned on Google Maps, so you can easily see where the communities are located. Just click on the “Communities” menu at the top and select an area. You’ll get a map of where the 8 communities in this area are and a list you can sort by price or community name. If you’re looking for a new construction home or a resale (used/existing) home with No CDD fees, just call or text us at (904) NEW-HOME and we'll send you a list of all the available homes in the areas you're interested in. We are happy to get any information that you need on any home you are looking for. Plus, when you use us as your buyer's agent to help you find and purchase any new or resale home, you will get Thousands EXTRA cash back from us at closing, usually paid towards your closing costs. We give 2% cash back on the purchase price of any new construction home, and 1% cash back on the purchase price of any resale home just for using us as your Realtor®!

CURIOUS ABOUT HOME STAGING? A professional home stager’s job is to help the homeowner prepare their home for sale, to accentuate the positives, and make any necessary recommendations. The goal is to also work with realtors in getting the home sold fast and for list price. A buyer is more likely to look at photos online before going to view the property, so making a good first impression is important. A professional stager helps make it easier to market and sell listings by showcasing the home’s qualities, which produces better photos, therefore attracting more potential buyers.

Skincare to the Rescue

We know it is important to take care of our vital organs; the heart, stomach, and brain - your skin is an organ. In fact, it’s the largest organ in your body, but it’s still easy to take skin for granted. Unless there’s a problem, you may not think about your skin very much. But skin has an important job to do. Your skin is constantly protecting you. Your skin keeps infections out of your body and keeps you from getting sick. When you take care of your skin, you’re helping your skin do its job. And taking care of your skin today will help prevent future problems, like wrinkles and even skin cancer. Good skin care also has tremendous social and mental benefits. Healthy looking skin makes a great first impression on others in an interview, a date, or even just making new friends. The mental benefits may even be greater – it keeps you feeling good about yourself. Nothing gives you more self-confidence and an extra bounce in your step more than knowing you look good. Proper skin care, being that skin is the most noticeable part of a person’s body is the #1 way to get that feeling. There are many different types of skin problems – cosmetic and health and many types of solutions. We will focus on skin problems/ treatments for cosmetic purposes. Some of the more common issues are acne scars, dull skin, age spots, wrinkles, and sagging skin. Some of the more common skin treatments are: Microdermabrasion, laser treatments for laser rejuvenation and laser resurfacing, chemical peels, thermage, among others.

Microdermabrasion

Microderm treatments minimize the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, crow’s feet, stretch marks, age spots, uneven skin texture, acne and trauma scars and blemishes, blackheads, hyperpigmentation and scar tissue. The procedure is one of the favorite wrinkle treatments because it is performed quickly in a facial esthetics office. The Aesthetics professional uses a handheld instrument to uses the most advanced technology is diamond-peel microdermabrasion. It is a safe, non-invasive skin resurfacing procedure that deeply polishes and stimulates the skin using densely packed laser-cut diamonds to remove dead skin cells while a gentle suction feature stimulates the production of collagen and elastin and improves blood circulation. The end result promotes the growth of healthy, new cells for a smoother, more radiant and flawless complexion.

Chemical Peels

Chemical peels, also called chemexfoliation or derma-peeling treatments, are cosmetic treatments performed on the face, typically used as an anti-aging solution to rejuvenate the skin. Chemical peels are used to treat wrinkles, skin discoloration and scars — typically on the face. A chemical peel can be done alone or in combination with other cosmetic procedures. Chemical peels can be done at different depths — light, medium or deep — depending on your desired results. Each type of chemical peel uses a different chemical solution. Deeper chemical peels produce moredramatic results, but also involve longer recovery times.

Laser Resurfacing

Laser skin resurfacing removes the outer layers of the skin that are damaged. The laser resurfacing procedure stimulates the production of collagen and new skin cells in the underlying layers of the skin. The precision with which lasers remove the layers of the skin gives the doctor the ability to adjust the treatment depth for each patient. Make sure you go to a doctor with many years of laser resurfacing experience.

Skin Rejuvenation IPL

Intense Pulsed Light (IPL™) is a facial rejuvenation treatment that can be used to address the effects of sun damage, heredity, and aging on facial skin. Skin imperfections such as wrinkles, uneven pigmentation, freckles, rosacea, facial veins, brown spots, and enlarged pores can be eliminated or greatly improved with IPL™ Photofacial treatments. Unlike other light therapies, particularly those done with lasers, IPL causes minimal damage to the skin and recovery takes just a few days. This method of skin rejuvenation is safe, with minimal downtime. The laser light delivers heat to layers beneath the skin’s surface, stimulating collagen production and making the skin look tighter. Many patients consider the procedure a good alternative to the traditional face lift, as it requires no anesthesia, no scalpel, and no downtime. Benefits include improved smoothness, reduced sun damage and discoloration, and improved appearance of wrinkles, spots or scars.

Thermage

Thermage is a non-exfoliating facial rejuvenation technique designed to tighten and improve the contours of the face and neck. These aesthetic improvements are achieved with a radio frequency device that is passed over face, with the tip in contact with the skin’s surface. Controlled radio waves from the device heat the deeper layers of the skin, stimulating new collagen development. The result is tighter and often smoother skin. Thermage can treat all skin types and requires no downtime. The benefits of the procedure are often immediately apparent and long-lasting.

Apex Theatre Studio The Apex Theatre Studio will offer theatre camps and intensives for students ages 7-18 this summer with a variety of programs including their seventh annual musical theatre production (Godspell), the Bard Bus (traveling Shakespeare company), a daily camp (Ready! Set! Go!) for students interested in all aspects of theatre and the Northeast Florida stage premiere of a Disney contemporary classic (Moana Jr.). “This will be our first summer in our newly expanded location which allows us to increase our program offerings. We think of it as adding an extra table at a summer gathering so we can offer more things for students to feast upon,” stated Ian Mairs, managing director. The summer will get off to a rowdy start with Ready! Set! Go!-a daily (Monday-Friday) camp experience which explores all aspects of theatre making and acknowledges the need for young artists to get up on their feet. Students will take workshops in Improvisation, Musical Theatre, Stage Combat, and Acting for the Camera. Families will be invited to the studio every Friday for a sharing time. The camp will present the Palm Valley Follies-a variety show on Thursday, June 18th featuring musical numbers, theater games, stage combat sequences, and scenes and monologues featuring camp participants. Students can elect to attend camp on a weekly basis or for the full session. Camp session is June 1st-19th. The seventh annual musical theater intensive will produce the feel-good Broadway classic, Godspell, an entertaining and thoughtful telling of the Gospel according to St. Matthew. The production will feature musical arrangements from the 2011 Broadway revival. “The revival features orchestrations with a more contemporary sound, geared for today’s musical theatre performers,” commented Matt Morgan, musical director for the production. Auditions are Sunday, March 8th at 3:00 p.m. (Students need to sign up at the Apex website under auditions.) Performances are June 26th and 27th at the Ponte Vedra Concert Hall and July 2nd and 3rd at St. John’s Cathedral (Jacksonville). The Bard Bus, the studio’s traveling Shakespeare company, will bring its fast paced and hilarious production of Twelfth Night to a host of venues around the region (June 11th-19th) with stops in Atlantic Beach (Johansen Park), Springfield (Klutho Park) and closing out the production at the Backyard Stage at the St. Augustine Amphitheatre. “This is the third year we have been able to bring Shakespeare to the community and it feels less like a play and more like a party,” remarked Raines Carr, artistic director for the production. Auditions are Sunday, April 5th.

A Message From The Vet by Dr. Deckard, DVM Pets R Family

COMPASSIONATE CARE: EUTHANASIA FOR OUR PETS

There are very few relationships in our lives that are as rewarding and emotionally fulfilling as the ones with our pets, and they are considered a member of the family now more than ever before. When our beloved pets are challenged with things like aging changes, terminal illness, or chronic pain, quality of life comes into question, and often a conversation with your vet about euthanasia will occur. Euthanasia means, “easy death,” in Greek, and in veterinary medicine, it refers to the process that ends an animal’s life in a compassionate manner. Many pet owners have told us that their wish is for their pet to pass away peacefully in their sleep; unfortunately, this rarely happens, and euthanasia is often the only way for them to go peacefully. Veterinary medicine is currently the only profession where compassionate euthanasia is embraced; it is the greatest responsibility entrusted to us, and our professional oath dictates that our ultimate goal is to relieve suffering for those under our care.

Losing a pet can be as emotional as losing a family member, and as pet owners ourselves, we know that when you are faced with making a decision to end your pet’s life it can be an agonizing one. You should see a veterinarian that you trust, and ask them to talk frankly with you about your pet’s quality of life. Getting a second opinion is always within your right as a pet owner if you have any doubts. There are times when there can be medications and treatment options that may help your pet live out its final days comfortably; your veterinarian will help guide you through your decision-making process and ensure that all decisions are in the best interest of the pet. If you and your vet decide it’s time to euthanize, the process of euthanasia should be a very peaceful one. Typically, it is done at your veterinary hospital; many facilities have a special room that is quiet, away from the sights and sounds of the busy hospital. Some will have a separate entrance, so the entire process is very private. Some pet owners come alone with their pets; others choose to bring other family members to say good-bye. You can choose to be in the room when the euthanasia occurs, or not – it is completely up to you. There are many veterinarians who will also provide euthanasia services at your home. Check with your veterinarian to

see if that is a service that they offer. Doing it at home can be a great comfort to some pets who are very fearful coming to the vet, or pets who are non-ambulatory, or in great pain. When you are ready, the first thing that usually happens during a euthanasia is a sedative is given, to calm your pet and ease them to sleep. This can take up to 10-15 minutes in some cases, and if it’s not occurring at your home, many facilities will have bedding, couches, blankets, and other comforts of home so everyone can feel as comfortable as possible. Once your pet is adequately sedated, when you are ready, the euthanasia solution is given. This is a drug that causes your pet’s heart to stop. It is very fast acting, only taking seconds from when it’s administered. Aftercare options range from cremation services to home burial, and is a very personal choice. Your veterinarian will make sure that you are given all of the options available to make the best decision for you and your family. The decision to end your pets life is very difficult and emotional, but it is often the most selfless thing that you can do, and it should be seen as a last act of love we can give to a companion who has provided us with years of unconditional love and affection.
